tony's given up saying don't do that in the same way he's given up saying thanks for that. instead he drops the lotion beside steve's limp, dirty blonde hair and maneuvers himself on his front side. his head protests the change in position, but that's fine, it protests most stuff nowadays. there's a noise from behind him at his wince though, so tony wafts his non-iv hand through the air.

"'s fine," he mumbles into the pillows.

"s'not fine," steve whispers, almost too low for tony to catch.

he's worn, threadbare as an old quilt over tony's body. tony knows the shape of him, the dips of frustration in between his strong brows, the tremor of his breaths.

last week, steve got a call in the middle of dinner, another mission gone south in a stream of missions gone south, another loss of life, jan no where to be found and left the room, shoulders rigid and tears safely hidden until the hallway, like tony couldn't identify the hitch in his voice and the tremble in his chest. only tony softly calling him back to ask for a handful of pills he could well have gotten on his own made the horror in steve's eyes shift to something warmer, something human. steve's easy to manage, tony thinks, when you understand the way to cultivate his self care is by letting him care for you.

your heart's on the outside of your body, isn't it, tony thinks. you need armor more than i do.

in bed, he leans back and lets steve sigh quietly as the lotion soothes the cracks in his own chapped and abused skin, lets steve soothe the cracks out of tony in the same motion, with his soft murmuring and gentle, firm touch. under the lotion, his skin is rough and textured and an intrinsic, unchangeable fact of life.

I know you were asking for a list of the Top Five Multiversal Tony Stark’s Who Would Sexually Dog Walk Rob Liefield’s Captain America, but instead i'm gonna give you a list of Rob Liefield's Captain America's Top Five Kinks That Have Him White-Knuckling The Bathroom Sink While He Glares At Himself In The Mirror And Tries To Ignore The Taste Of Come In The Back Of His Throat (number 4 will have you--& Captain America--gagging!) bc it's been on my mind lately

Essentially, I feel like all of the more gruff iterations of Steve (including Rob Liefield v2 Cap, Ults Cap, and arguably EMH Cap) just need to be totally and completely objectified in order to get out of their heads for a bit. His body, his identity, and his duty are all intertwined so intimately, it's hard to unravel what still remains of just Steve Rogers underneath the mantel of Captain America. Furthermore, even when he does take issue with the ideals of the country that he's supposed to both protect & represent when he wakes to the 21st century, I think these versions of Steve may struggle with these emerging feelings of dissent towards America because he chose to embody this heroic persona in the first place. So, by renouncing the jingoistic values that Captain America has come to symbolize in the interim while Steve was in the ice, he's not only betraying his duty, but also himself.

And it's not like Steve can ever truly undo his decision to become Captain America. The evidence of that is clear in the fact that his body was bestowed upon him just as much as the shield was. I imagine that Steve struggles to articulate this tension that he feels about being someone who was granted superhuman ability solely because he was trusted to be able to carry out his duty who is now questioning the justness of the very institutions he was originally created to serve. A weapon who is beginning to question the hand that wields it.

I think that for Steve, release from this turmoil feels like being able to exist redirect his body for a purpose that he doesn't have to morally interrogate, or even reflect upon at all past the pleasure that it brings him. He just wants to be temporarily untethered from questions of loyalty vs. righteousness, Steve Rogers vs. Captain America, and he wants not to dwell on when those two sides of himself started to stand in opposition to each other.

The objectification is a familiar burden: after all, being Captain America involves its fair share of objectification. Steve has lost count of the number of military galas and political ceremonies he's been to where he suspects his gracious and grating hosts would have much preferred to parade a red, white, and blue statue around instead. Sometimes he wonders if the army regrets unfreezing him at all, if they wish they had left him stiff and compliant, imprisoning him back in cold storage in the time between annual dinners to honor WW2 vets.

And it's not that Steve doesn't want to let himself go trusting and defenseless in compliance, and he sure wouldn't mind if that lent itself to a stiffness of a more heated nature, either. It's just that his conscious runs even deeper than the serum, and sometimes if he wants to capture that ever more elusive feeling of accomplishment, of conviction, of obedience, than he has to submit to a more extracurricular set of duties.

“C'mon man, what was that?” Sam huffs under his breath as the noisy sticks on our controllers fill the silence of the apartment.

Keeping my eyes locked on the brightly-lit screen before us as I sit up a bit against the white faux-leather couch, I grit my teeth, scoffing as I’m dealt another fatal blow by the game’s ruthless ‘lobster-shark mutant zombie’ boss. “What the hell even is this game?” I groan as I wait for my character to respawn beside Sam’s, glancing over at the disc’s case before rolling my eyes. “Leave it to Steve to have the lamest gaming library in the history of mankind.”

“I still have no clue what the fuck this console even is,” Sam admits as he smashes the buttons with the palm of his hand, wincing as he’s knocked further and further down in health points. “Someone’s gotta collect the funds to get this man an Xbox or something.”

“Peter was talking to me about getting Willa a Switch for her birthday; I think him and Thor are in on it together,” I tell him as I’m thrown back into the round, adding, “maybe he’ll find some better shit on there to play.”

“Oh god- here comes his ult-” Sam warns as we both brace for the wrath of the 'acid tidal wave’, but despite our best efforts, for the fifth time in a row, we’re killed immediately on impact, a giant frown popping up on the screen accompanying the 'retry’ button.

“Jesus christ,” I toss the controller to the side, burying my face in my hands as my elbows fall onto my knees.

“No way anyone’s killed this thing, level’s unbeatable,” Sam shakes his head, switching the console off using his controller. “Stupid crab-ass-looking, slimy motherfucker-”

“Mo-ther-fuck-er,” a little voice calls from behind us, causing us to both shoot up in surprise, turning our heads to see Willa standing behind the couch, rubbing her eyes sleepily.

“Oh, no, no, no,” Sam shakes his head, reaching out a hand before saying, “now you just forget about anything you just heard, alright? We did not say that. That is not what we said.”

Tilting her head in slight confusion, Willa raises an eyebrow. Biting my lip, I do my best to keep from bursting out in laughter. “Yeah, you didn’t say that,” she agrees as she motions to the both of us, “you did,” she continues, her gaze locking on Sam.

“Woah, woah, take it easy,” he shakes his head, his hands coming up in defense. “That’s not- we did not- I-I didn’t-”

“Bucky,” Willa’s innocent voice asks as she turns to me, wide bambi-eyes blinking cluelessly as she asks, “what’s mo-ther-fuck-er mean?”

Chuckling, I click my tongue, musing, “Well sweetheart, that is a very big word, isn’t it? I think it’d be best for you to ask your daddy tonight when he calls to check in on you; make sure you tell him it was Uncle Sam who said it, okay?”

“Hey, now that’s just not fair,” Sam disputes, turning to me with an unimpressed look, “you were throwing out just as much shit as I was before little missy here showed up and-”

“Shit,” Willa repeats; at the deadpan expression on the little girl’s face, I can’t help but burst into a fit of laughter, earning a surprised look from Willa and a groan from Sam as he shakes his head, pulling out his phone.

“Alright, time to do some damage control. Better now than him finding out about it later. What the hell am I even supposed to say? 'Hey Steve, sorry for corrupting your precious little angel- Bucky and I kept getting our asseskicked in your horrible Godzilla knock-off…” As the man reads his typing aloud, Willa’s face scrunches in confusion once more as she mouths the words 'hell’ and 'asses’ to herself questioningly, only fueling my laughter more.

“Alright, alright, that’s enough,” I cut Sam off, opening my arms up for the child as I hum, “while Uncle Sammy figures that how, how’s about you and I pick something off my phone for dinner?” I suggest. Feet padding over happily, Willa climbs right up in my lap, watching with wide eyes as I open up my delivery app. “Anything you want, doll,” I hum softly into her hair as I let her scroll, glancing over at Sam as I ask carefully, “How’s he taking it?”

Looking up at me with defeat in his eyes, Sam shakes his head, replying, “All I know is: we’re in deep shit now.
