« I wasn’t afraid of dying. I was afraid of being fired! I decided: 'This is not something that’s going to define me'. I never gave into any feeling of 'Why me? This sucks'. I was just like – gotta get back on it. »
— Emilia Clarke at Harper's Bazaar on how she felt when suffering a subarachnoid haemorrhage, a type of stroke, during filming for Season 2 of Game of Thrones.
She suffered an aneurysm on the other side of her brain two years later during a stay in New York for a stage acting gig.
In 2019 the BBC reported...
This surgery was far more intrusive, meaning her skull had to be opened up. "I looked as though I had been through a war more gruesome than any Daenerys experienced," said Clarke.

A Fable By Aesop

The Hare was once boasting of his speed before the other animals. “I have never yet been beaten,” said he, “when I put forth my full speed. I challenge anyone here to race with me.”
Qintir lykirī vestretas, "Aōhon āhinnon jiōrza."
The Tortoise said quietly, “I accept your challenge.”
"Kesy sȳz pirtiapos issa," Hunes vestretas; "Va mōriot aō vamiot lilagon koston."
“That is a good joke,” said the Hare; “I could dance round you all the way.”
"Aōhon āeksākonon keliemās vapār ērintā," Qintir udlitas. "Dakonī īlos dakogon?"
“Keep your boasting till you’ve beaten,” answered the Tortoise. “Shall we race?”
Sepār geron prānōn vēttaksi.
So a course was fixed and a start was made.

The Hare darted almost out of sight at once, but soon stopped and, believing that the Tortoise could never catch him, lay down by the wayside to have a nap.
Qintir ōñapo syt dōrī kelitas, yn gero mōriot paeros yn dokimaros adervose ilī istas.
The Tortoise never for a moment stopped, but went on with a slow but steady pace straight to the end of the course.
Skorī Hunes kirtas, ērinno qīzo vamiot qintir ūndas.
When the Hare awoke from his nap, he saw the Tortoise just near the winning-post.
Hunes tolvios zȳhos adervose dakotas, yn jaelaro toliot issa. Qintir qīzi rēptes ūndetas.
The Hare ran as fast as he could, but it was too late. He saw the Tortoise had reached the goal.
Pār Qintir vestretas, "Paerves dokimarvēs dakoneri ērinisi."
Then said the Tortoise, “Slow and steady wins the race.”

This took me absolutely forever, but my God is it satisfying when each paragraph completes. I'm not super happy with some of the sentences here, construction-wise, some of these are translated a little more literally than I would like, but I did the best I could lol.
Some words I had to derive for this (in order of appearance):
kyrstun (3lun.) - gown - reanalysed paucal of 'kyrsto'
jūrnenon (3ter.) - inspection, examination - jūrnegon (to regard, to examine) + -non
jopamagon (C-fin) - to caress - jo- + pamagon 'to rub'
izugikagon - to frighten [somebody] - izugagon + -ikagon
glaesarion (3ter.) - mood - substantive of participle form of glaesagon 'to fare'
kisikībagon - to indulge, to pamper - kisikagon 'to feed' + -ībagon
hakota (adj.1) - nervous - perfect passive participle of hakogon 'to pull' (literally 'pulled, stretched')
resikta (adj.1) - gaunt - perfect passive participle of resikagon > resagon 'to lean, to list' + -ikagon (literally 'caused to lean')
amazemagon - to regain - ā- + mazemagon (to gain, to obtain)
ēngoqitta - tasteless, figuratively in the sense of inappropriate, 'less savory' - ēngos 'taste' + qitta
rhakiapos - web - rhakigon 'to weave' + -iapos
sīmonikagon - to rouse, to wake - sīmonagon 'to rise' + -ikagon
kōdruragon - to bathe, to give a bath (➡️obj. DAT) - kōdrion + -uragon
annurlion - stables - anne 'horse' + urlion
ykynazma (1lun) - stink, stench - ykynnon 'a smell' (from ykynagon 'to smell') + azma
kipvos (3sol) - mount, anything that is ridden - kipagon 'to ride' + -vos
iderēbenka (adj.1) - critical, exacting, judging - iderēbagon 'to select' + -enka

Skorī dēmalȳti tymptir tymis, ērinis iā morghūlis. // Battle of the OC's
~Title translation: "When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die." ***the title is in high valyrian, and completely accurate as it was translated by the dude that actually made the language for the show, which I do not watch for the obvious messed-up-everything reason. But I can't fault the effort that's gone into it, nor the amazing music.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Round 01 // Introductions :: REQUIREMENTS :: ~ The Set ~ (X) A picture of your OC (X) A magazine article (X) A colour block (X) A featured item (X) A picture of the city where they are from and tell me what it is (well, she's from the fictional and book island of Driftmark, located in Blackwater Bay, so I included blackwater way and a real-life image for what I think Driftmark Castle on Driftmark would look like, also Dragonstone, because they're quite close by and both driftmark and dragonstone are the ancestral seats of dragonriders from Old Valyria.) (X) The fandom title card (well, since my OC is for the books and not the stupid show, it doesn't have a title card, but included the sigil of her House, House Velaryon, as well as the book for "The World of Ice and Fire," which contains all the histories of Westeros, as well as some lands beyond prior to the events of the first book, A Game of Thrones.) 30//30
~ The Description ~ (X) What is your OC’s name? Shiera Velaryon
(X) What fandom is your OC from? A Song of Ice and Fire (created and written by George R.R. Martin)
(X) Five random facts about your OC 1. Has typical traits common of those of the old blood of valyria, namely, silver-gold hair, violet eyes, she also inheirted the dragonrider resistence of heat and the potential to bond with a dragon. 2. only one of her eyes is violet, the other a sea-green, having the rare trait of mismatched eyes (aka heterochromia, little too scientific a word for westeros), for her mismatched eyes, she was named for Shiera Seastar, one of the Great Bas.tards of Aegon the Unworthy, who also had mismatches eyes (though neither were a shade of purple) and was a reknowned beauty, courted by two of her Great Bas.tard half-brothers.     3. She is a skilled Cyvasse player, boasting a record of only 10 losses against hundreds. She favours the Dragon and spearmen pieces.   4. Has an extreme fascination with the histories of the world, particularly that of Old Valyria and Westeros, but has some light interest in the Old Empire of Ghis. She herself admits she'd be more interested in Volantis if her mother hadn't always tried to shove it down her throat.   5. For her 7th Name Day (aka birthday), her father gifted her a Little Valyrian, a species of Lemur with silver-white fur and purple eyes found in the Forest of Qohor. She named it Symeon, after Symeon Star-eyes a legendary knight from the Age of Heroes. When she left Westeros at the outbreak of war, she left Symeon with her younger brother, (now) Lord Monterys Velaryon.
(X) Think of this as the epic origin round…tell me the story of your OC and how they got to where they are at this point in life. At least three paragraphs.
Shiera is the eldest born child of Lord Monford Velaryon (now deceased). She was born 281 AC, known as the Year of the False King, the year Prince Rhaegar Targaryen crowned Lyanna Stark the Queen of Love and Beauty and eventually sparked Robert's Rebellion. Like the rest of the Kingdom, House Velaryon bent the knee when Robert Baratheon took the throne, though Monford kept Shiera from court, feeling she looked too much like a Targaryen, whom Robert despised and may have attempted to kill her.
When she was 5, it was discovered her mother, Lady Saera of Volantis had committed adultery, Shiera never learned his name, though he seems to have been high-born, she did, however, end up with a younger half-brother, Lothor Driftwaters. Lady Saera returned to Volantis, alone, whilst Lothor was trained to eventually become Shiera's sworn shield. They received word her mother died a few years later, and Lord Monford remarried, to a Westerosi high-born lady, who went on to give birth to his son and heir, Monterys (now Lord Velaryon as their father is dead).
Her father tried to betrothed her to Eddard Karstark and even sent her to stay at Karhold for some time as they tried to complete the marriage pact. There she became friends with Lady Alys Karstark (her potential betrotheds younger sister), and took to calling him "Edd," just as Alys, seeing him more as an older brother rather than a future husband. The betrothal eventually fell through, as Lady Saera. Although the marriage pact came to nothing, relations remained friendly enough, and Shiera continued to visit the North. She was eventually bethrothed to Ser Lucion Lannister, but it was considered broken when her father supported the claim of Stannis Baratheon, in direct opposition to the claim of Joffrey Baratheon (in truth the bas.tard of twins; Cersei and Jamie Lannister), grandson of the Lord of House Lannister, Tywin Lannister.
Following Stannis Baratheon's declaration and call to arms, Shiera was sent across the narrowsea, with her brother Lothor amongst her protectors, to remain with her mother's family as war raged in Westeros. Her youngest brother, Monterys, was kept at Driftmark as her father's heir. Once in Essos, and hearing stories of the Mother of Dragons, Breaker of Chains, etc, etc, Shiera eventually convinced her brother to set out with her beyond the black walls and find the dragon queen, which they eventually did and Shiera switched her personal alliegence from Stannis Baratheon to her (distant) cousin, Daenerys Stormborn Targaryen. She tries to explain to her Queen the various laws and ways of Westeros, succeeding in explaining the difference between a Lannister and a Stark (where Ser Barriston had failed), as well as the histories and claims of the people there that predate their arrival. This occasionally lands her in arguments with the young Queen, but Shiera comes to believe Dany is the Conqueror reborn or the Prince that was promised, but that she will reconqueror westeros regardless.
When Victatrion Greyjoy came marching for the Dragon Queen as a bride for his brother (and secretly for himself), she easily managed to convince him that she was Daenerys (still gone with Drogon), and sailed back to Westeros with him, Rhaegal flying along in secret, with whom she had bonded during her time with Daenerys. Euron Greyjoy, however, notices instantly that she was not a Targaryen, and they begin their own complicated dance, though Shiera further infuriates Victarion, and continues to deem him an oaf. If a violent one.
The realm strikes back! (sort of)
Actor John Bradley portrayed Samwell Tarly who was one of the lucky characters who made it through all eight seasons of Game of Thrones.
He joins Peter Dinklage in commenting on the hyperbolic reaction of some fans to Season 8.
Bradley — who portrayed Samwell Tarly in the series — said some fans were so attached to the fantasy series that they would never be satisfied with the outcome of a finale.
"It was highly unlikely that we were ever going to please everybody," Bradley told the "Just For Variety" podcast. "Chances are we were going to please a fraction of people. There are so many different permutations to it and if we'd have gone with any one of these then everyone would have been unhappy about that one."
He added: "We almost couldn't win. It almost meant too much to people for them to really ever be satisfied."
Bradley continued to say that he hoped fans would "re-evaluate" the show's ending once the "wounds have healed a little bit."
He was a bit more gentle than Peter Dinklage a few weeks ago.
My own view is that after the finale the narrative about the episode was hijacked by loudmouths on Twitter (where else?) and by certain entertainment writers. As a result, there is now a cult of Season 8 haters who have turned disdain for the last season into a litmus test for being considered socially acceptable.
In fact, in a poll taken by the Hollywood Reporter soon after the finale, 2.5 times as many respondents rated S08E06 a 10, 9, or 8 than those who rated it a 1, 2, or 3. We wrote about that in May 2019.
Outrage tweeters seldom represent a credible cross-section of public opinion. If anything, the bigmouths on Twitter routinely swarm the platform in order to give the impression that they speak for everybody — (spoiler: they don’t).
John and Peter are right. It’s time for the more reasonable Season 8 disdainers to take another look. FYI: It was no accident that the first chapter in Volume I of ASoIaF was a Bran chapter. 😉
Nathalie Emmanuel talks about what it was like when she first had to deal with her role as translator Missandei of Naath.
During her first look at the script, Emmanuel recalled seeing whole paragraphs of Valyrian and wondering how she’d ever be able to pronounce and memorize the fictional language.
“I remember just freaking out for a minute,” she recalled. “It was just written in the script and I had no other materials that taught me how it was pronounced, how to say it, what it sounded like. Like I had nothing [at first].” Fortunately, the creator of the language, “conlanger” David J. Peterson, had her covered. Peterson had prepared a bunch of resources for the actress to utilize. “I used to get these pages of it written down phonetically and in English,” said Emmanuel. “And then I’d also have recordings of him saying it phonetically, saying it up to speed, saying it just slightly slower, and then saying it in English also. So I had a lot of support, and we also had dialect coaches that were really wonderful.”
