Ethedis for the LOTRO ask game?
(for this ask game where you send in one of my OCs, and I give you a synopsis of what it would look like if they were the main NPC in a tutorial quest)
o hmm, I think there's a way I could be a little mean about this heheh
so I think that I mentioned at some point that before the elf intro, Ethedis had actually befriended Amdir. I haven't fleshed out all that much of it up until now, but I'm thinking this could be a short adventure with Ethedis and Amdir where you could see them being besties (before The Horrors)
this will probably just have to be one instance, as it would flow best into the Elf or Human starting zones and we don't need to stack two entire intro questlines on top of each other lol
(under the cut bc How Did This Get So Long??)
I think it actually starts in Rivendell, with the Player Character (probably an elf/human only intro) preparing to leave on the expedition to Ered Luin, at which point you are introduced to Elrond's excited young apprentice Ethedis, and the Ranger Amdir who is going to tag along for part of the trip but plans to part ways in Bree.
Fast travel to somewhere in the wilderness of the Trollshaws, you Ethedis and Amdir are a little ways ahead of the group to make sure the road is clear. Surprise! wood-trolls! combat tutorial! After the fight Ethedis will remark that it was the first time she's actually had to put her combat training to the test against a real foe, which surprises Amdir, who says that he wouldn't have guessed it was her first real fight. One of them might ask the player character about their combat experience, which would allow you to pick from a few different responses (always a fun roleplay option and tbh I wish they would use it in more quests). I think if the PC says they're also inexperienced Amdir will mention that he's very glad you're both catching on quickly and didn't get hurt (bc he would not have fun explaining how he let two newbies get injured on his watch, and would feel very bad. classic protective Ranger moment)
Fast travel again to somewhere in the Lone Lands, you all are camped near Weathertop. Ethedis is talking about the history of the area (it sounds like she's been talking about this for a while now), and overall seems very excited to be here and see this historical site in person. Amdir smiles and says he's glad that she's interested in Dunedain history, as it brings him comfort to know that others still wish to keep his people's history alive. Your character might be prompted to give an opinion on Ethedis' loredump, either saying they found it boring (which Ethedis will simply laugh off and say that's probably why she's not a minstrel, but Amdir will just glare at you) or say it was interesting (which will prompt both her and Amdir to loredump even more)
Once you make it to Breeland, somewhere in South Chetwood, Amdir says that he must part ways here. Ethedis says she's sad to see him go but hopes to meet him again once the expedition to Ered Luin is done, and Amdir will tell her that he looks forward to it if such a meeting can be arranged, but tells you both to be careful in your travels (vaguely alluding to a growing danger in Breeland.
Then you can have two different outcomes depending on your race:
If you're a human, you part ways with the Ered Luin expedition at the same time as Amdir. He will bid you farewell and safe travels, and says that he has urgent business to attend to before disappearing into the woods without further explanation (as Rangers are wont to do). Your quest objective tells you to head to Bree-Town, but after you've been heading in that direction for a while you run into a large group of Brigands and get knocked on the head. Wake up in the Blackwold jail, human intro progresses mostly as normal from that point onward (but without the combat tutorial) although Amdir's quest dialogue would be different. If we want to get really mean, maybe one of the last things he says to you as himself is something along the lines of "I fear... I will not make it to see our friend again... tell... tell her that I tried"
If you're an elf, shortly after Amdir departs Ethedis will offer to explain to you the history of Edhelion as it was told to her by her mother before she left for the Havens. Then you get the old elf intro instance but cut down a bit and framed as a flashback, there will also be an elf woman there with a vaguely familiar face holding a baby in her arms (it's never explicitly stated, but that's Ethedis' mom and baby Ethedis), she will be there when Ethedis' dad Talagan brings down the library and she collapse to her knees in a sobbing heap when it happens. No one draws attention to her but she's still There. Anyway after that you arrive in Ered Luin, quests progress as normal but Ethedis is along for the ride. Like when you go to talk to the survivors of Edhelion, Ethedis will be in the ruins with some quest comments ("Even after all this time, I can sense the sorrow in this place..." "The land remembers it like it was yesterday, and I understand now why we still leave it abandoned" and "I think this may have been my parent's house. And to think, we all could have lived here together..."), she's also going to have Opinions about the Dourhand's borderline-worship of Skorgrim lol
After everything in Thorin's Hall is over with, she will disappear for a little bit but rejoin the story during the united elf/dwarf assault on Rath Tarag. When she hears that you're planning to go to Bree next, she will ask you to try to find Amdir and see how he's doing (surely you'll only have good news! surely!)
Later on you might run into Ethedis in Rivendell, and she'll have a short quest for you, talking about missing your fallen friend but finding comfort in your shared memories of him (very similar in tone to Gorwen's quest in Thornhad after finishing Before the Shadow) Amdir was the first mortal friend she knew, and she didn't realize how much this loss would sting. Overall it's a bittersweet reunion.
(man I really saw Ethedis and was like "the elf into didn't give her enough trauma. she's connected to the human one too!" someone please make me Give Her A Break)

any character + outlandish quest reward(s)?
"I don't want this," you say flatly.
Eywind pauses in his merriment to give you a quizzical look. "What's wrong with it?" he asks. "It's nice enough. Good resale value, if you don't want it. But I thought you would. It's old, and you seem the type to like that kind of thing."
"It says 'Túrin' on it," you point out.
"Yes, well," he says. "Isn't that just its name? What does it mean, anyway?"
You take a deep breath and pinch your nose, closing your fist over the ring in your hand. "It's an engarn," you say. "An owner's inscription. Túrin is, or was, the name of its owner. And yes, it is very old. How it came here I know not, but I want nothing to do with it."
Eywind blinks, no understanding on his face, and you take a deep breath. Dwarves are long-lived, by the reckoning of mortals, but not so long-lived that they recall the Elder Days with any sort of clarity. It's not polite to speak of such things directly, not in casual conversation, but the Dwarf ought to have some explanation -- if for no other reason than to warn him off picking up old strange rings. You wonder where he got it.
"A great deal of malice was bent on the owner of this ring on a time," you say. "I cannot say whether any of it has clung to the ring, but it's not a risk I wish to take."
Eywind still looks confused. You lean on your staff, pulling your cloak tighter around you against the cold of the Misty Mountains in October, and honestly try very hard not to heave a sigh, to limited success. "It's cursed," you say. It's not, or rather, you don't know whether or not it is, but perhaps saying it bluntly will drive the idea into his skull.
"Oh!" he says. "Well, if you don't want it, then I'll take it back."
"Excuse me?" you say.
"The goblin I took it off of walked straight off the edge of the cliff back there," Eywind says. "I thought it must have had a sight too much to drink, but perhaps --"
"No, it's of scholarly interest to some," you say, and you quickly pocket the ring and walk away, without looking back.
~*~*~*~
Túrin is such a completely bizarre and out of nowhere quest reward, attached to a totally random sidequest that seems to have nothing to do with the events the item evokes -- except that I think Eywind just might be the sort of crazy who would witness Túrin's decision-making process and wonder if he could weaponize it.
At first I thought it was unlikely the ring was directly connected with The Túrin, and then I remembered that this game is always trying to pawn Barahir's underwear or whatever off on its players, so no, I think it's pretty plausible, actually, that this is an actual item he may have owned. As to whether or not it's cursed... well has anyone actually kept it long enough to find out?
The POV character for this is my helf LM Pegweneth, who is honestly a bit of an ass when it comes to what she expects other people to know about, at least at this point in her story. Maybe I'll have her keep the ring. Might be something there.

ask game -- I'm gonna guess....... trip??
WIP Word Guessing Game (WIP said NO. But it DID have strip, so here!)
Once BJ strips his cap and top off, his gaze wanders over to Hawk and Sidney. They're chatting quietly amongst themselves, neither exhausted from the easy session, but Sidney with a line of blood on his throat from a spurt that had painted its way over his scrubs and the edge of his mask. While the new nurse, Thompson, had sponged off any that had gotten on his face, it seemed she'd missed that.

7, 15 and 25 for the fic ask game c:
7. How many ideas for fics do you have right now?
I would say "just one" because all my ideas and motivation end up going to LK, but I do have a couple ideas for a series of one-shots afterward. Then if you count the hurt/no comfort ficlet I started, two secret collab fics with two different people, the semi-canon side oneshot for LK, and the several requests still in my ask box... around ten? Some of those will be extensions of LK though, and some of them will be very short, like the Seer oneshot, so I don't consider them full fics, really.
15. How do you come up with titles for your fics/chapters?
oh I'm excited for this one, because I do have a system that I'm proud of for naming chapters. Each title comes from the chapter text, is usually three words long (but occasionally four) and has something to do with the content of the chapter itself. Sometimes this works better than others, but my writing style naturally contains a lot of three-word phrases, some of them quite memorable, so the scavenger hunt for chapter titles has been fun so far.
Fic names are more difficult. Thorns of Steel and A Sunless Age came about in the same way the chapter titles did, but Lost Kin was my first fic so I didn't have any better ideas than naming it after a canon character who wasn't even meant to appear in the fic. (I've since fixed that oversight, but you won't like it.) ¬_¬;

*flame* is the US really that political aggiatated or does the media exaggarate.
It’s hard for me to answer because I’ve never been outside the US so I do t have anything culturally to compare it to. But yes the US is pretty seriously politically divided in my opinion!
It seems pretty bad when just about every issue is controversial & both sides feel passionate & won’t sway.

Okokok, since I got into spy x family thanks to you and it was the best decision I gotta ask:
Is Vanitas good? I saw a few clips some time ago and I got really curious about it 👀
Hi Mape! @mapesandoval
I’m only on episode 5, but here are my thoughts so far:
I like the dynamic set up between Noe and Vanitas—both their powers too, one with the ability to see memories through blood, the other has the book of Vanitas with the power to heal the cursed.
Tumblr media
I’m not sure of the overall story arc yet, but it’s interesting enough that I want to keep watching!
The art and setting are gorgeous though!! I love the steampunk alternate history Paris setting and the vibes are immaculate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All the vampire feeding scenes so far are quite sensual, so I recommend only watching on your own or with other adults you’re extremely comfortable with 😳👍

Also the OP and ED are so good:

12.............. with Corunir?
So you have chosen... Tur-Morva. *evil laughter* wherein the rescue instance goes horribly awry in a canon-compliant way
“Eth… Help me” Ethedis hears a weak but familiar voice behind her, one that she would be overjoyed to hear in any other circumstances and speaking any other words. She was a split moment from sprinting down the tunnel, where she had heard Bregadir frantically calling for a healer mere seconds ago.
Instead, she stops and pivots around to see Corunir collapsed on one knee, breathing heavily and bleeding more so, a deep shadow of crimson growing beneath him. Horror sets in the pit of her stomach.
She stoops to steady him just in time as he falls forward into her arms. “I think… wounds reopened…” he mutters faintly as Ethedis struggles to reposition him to asses his injury.
“Corunir…?” No response “…Corunir!” She calls frantically, still to no avail. He’s fading fast. She fights to bury the panic welling up in her heart. She has to stay calm if she is to have any hope of saving him. She prays someone else heard Bregadir’s call for a healer, she cannot help both of them.
There is a long cut on his stomach, that seems to be the primary source of the blood. The wound is not fresh, seeming days old yet healing very poorly. No doubt an injury sustained during the Grey Company’s capture and left to fester after he was thrown into that dark cell, just beyond the reach of his kin. It seems to have reopened in the battle. His strength has already been long spent, and this rapid loss of blood would be enough to push him over the edge. His face is pale and his breath slows with each moment, he is minutes away from death.
She puts her hand to the wound, applying as much pressure as she can in her already weakened state. “Please… just hang on. Just a little longer…” she pleads, blinking away tears. He cannot hear her.
She takes a deep breath and turns her mind outwards, beyond herself and this small corridor. She does not know how deep below the earth they are, but deep enough that she cannot hear the slumbering trees or even reach their roots, but she doubts they would be willing to lend her their power anyway, not while it’s still winter. She keeps searching. She finds some moss, it wants to help, but it is too small for this task.
After a search that, in reality, barely lasted a moment yet it felt like hours, she finally finds something. An underground river, flowing swift and strong beneath the earth, unaffected and uncaring of all else, yet holding great power. She begs the dark cold waters for aid, to lend her its strength and grant this dying man in her arms new life.
‘Please. Please just buy him a little more time. Let me save him. It isn’t his time yet. Not here. Please.’
There is nothing. The river has no reason to care. She fears it will give her nothing.
Nothing, and then the sound of rushing water thundering in Ethedis’ ears alone, the shock of cold water in her veins, and an unfamiliar power flowing through her hands. Flowing like a torrent of water too powerful for her to tread in such a weakened state, yet tread it she must. She sends it into Corunir’s near-lifeless body. Close the wound, stop the bleeding, give him the strength to survive.
There is water now, but not from the river, it flows from Ethedis’ eyes. Her hands tremble and her arms burn as though she has been swimming against the current of an ocean. Acting as a conduit of power such as this would test her limits even on a good day, and this was anything but ‘a good day’.
She cannot do this. She cannot hold onto this river. Corunir is still bleeding. If she stops now it will not be enough to save him, but she cannot hold on. More water escapes her eyes, a sob from her throat.
Suddenly she feels another set of hands atop her own, calloused, worn, and strong. A familiar voice beside her, it belongs to Golodir.
“Easy, Ethedis, easy. You’re doing well. It will be alright.” If he is afraid, his voice will not betray it, and that is all the better for Ethedis.
With the practiced confidence only an experienced captain could possess, he manages to steady her. She can hold on a little longer, she is not fighting alone, Golodir found them. He says it’s going to be ok, and she believes him.
She keeps it up just long enough, but not a moment more. She cracks open one eye and sees Corunir's bleeding has finally slowed, if not stopped altogether. Some color has returned to his face as well. She thinks it is safe to stop now. She looks over to Golodir and sees worry in his eyes, but no fear. He simply nods at her, she thinks she hears him say something, but she cannot make out the words. She lets go and collapses. She thinks Golodir caught her, but her body is numb with cold and she can’t feel much of anything. He calls out to her, but she lacks the strength to respond and consciousness quickly abandons her. Corunir is alright at least. Golodir found them, everything will be alright.
(Yaaay Golodad to the rescue! there was meant to be another part to this, where Corunir comes to later and actually has the chance to talk to Ethedis, but it wasn't coming together fast enough so I'll probably just add that part *gestures vaguely* "later". I DO like what I had so far, but it was my first time actually properly writing dialog between those two and I wanted to make sure I did a good job, ya can't rush it. you'll see it later.)

4, 15, 35?
4. Do you have a favorite side quest?
There's a sidequest in Lothlorien, Circles of Silence, where after you help someone, she invites you to participate in an ancient custom in Lothlorien, to travel around and find various ancient circles and meditate in them. She says they were built so long ago that no one really remembers it, and part of the tradition is to reflect on their origins and past.
Near one of these circles, two Elves sit, and one of them objects to the idea of a stranger participating in the custom. The other one tells him that under the Shadow, everything must change -- but there's a certain shadow hanging over many of the Elves during the war. Their time has grown short, and regardless of the outcome of the war, many of them will be leaving soon, or soon to them at any rate. And looking to the future, they know that they are leaving Middle-earth to the race of Men, who have, to them, quite short memories. They will be forgotten, and although it's the natural way of things, it's still such a tragedy for them. This is their home, where they've lived for literal Ages, and many of them were born here.
Perhaps part of the sharing of this tradition is the idea that maybe, for one short lifetime, in one mind, they'll be remembered. They'll leave someone behind who will have known them, and their customs, and reflected on their origins just as they themselves once did. Maybe for one mortal's lifespan they will still live on, in some manner, in a land they've lived in so long that they can't even remember building their ancient circles.
15. Do you have a favorite class to play? A favorite specialization?
I've already answered this, but adding on to say I'm having So Much fun with my new Rune-keeper, who is blue-line specced as a healer.
35. Are there any quotes you like?
So it is, so it is! I cannot even have a word with these fine men before the enemy would see me slain? (This is the point at which I abandon setup and make for the catapult when soloing Defense of Minas Tirith.)
