"The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph." Elizabeth Walker knows her place in the world, but that doesn’t mean she is happy with it. That doesn’t mean she is happy to be staying- to be sheltered- at her father’s estate while he deals with congress in York, and her older brother, Joseph, deals with the parties and games of Philadelphia, while she makes sure her house stays put- and out of British hands. And that doesn’t mean she is happy to be dragged into the war itself, after months of defeats outside Philadelphia, when finally on a cold December night, a dying soldier shows up at her door, and his commanding officer follows. But, deep down, a part of her is happy when it means change- change in the war, change in her life- when she is recruited by the young, passionate, and downright angry Major Benjamin Tallmadge to help revive the army’s dying supply system and keep the men staying at Valley Forge alive. By whatever means possible.

Chapter 31: His and mine are the same
Tumblr media
(the crossover of all time move over every superhero franchise... ever /hj)
Audrey had gone to bed, until the next night, and the next, and so it continued. When she heard cannon fire she assumed the worst– she could not help it. Fate, or maybe, the backhand of God was seldom kind. She’d lost it all before, she was a liar, a killer and a public ledger, after all, and he a spy, why should either of them live after all they’ve done. If justice existed– but then, it didn’t. The world was bleak and cruel, and yet Audrey still found some light in it, just please– live. I love you- I need you, just… please. She did not spare him for him to become a tragedy of war against empire… just, please.  October 20th, 1781.  Clip–clop-clip–clop–clip-clop.  Yankee Doodle keep it up, Yankee Doodle dandy, Mind the music and the step, And with the girls be handy. --------------------------------------------------------- “You’re alive,” Audrey repeated astonished.  “Of course I am,” Tallmadge said blue eyes looking at her with some new renewed astonishment.  Now, Audrey did not know anything of military strategy, one of the few things she didn’t know.  “We won,” Benjamin added with a boyish grin, a weight seeming to have left him, finally. “Cornwallis trapped himself, he couldn’t even show up to formally surrender,” Tallmadge added a bit smugly.  All at once a flood of other fears and questions, so many questions, crossed Benjamin’s well informed mind. Then he looks rather aghast, as though he was recalling something he would rather not.  “Help me,” Tallmadge managed weakly, but it was desperate and earnest, after all he had seen. It sounded rather more like a distract me to Madam Audrey. So, that she would do.

Chapter 34- Luck be a Lady (TURN AMC)
Remember how I used to post a chapter update weekly? Yeah. Happy chapter 34 after almost a year! It was already kinda written, so. Unfortunately, it doesn't show where I am with my writing abilities now; bear with me. The upcoming chapters are kinda a lot of the drabbles already written, so at least it should be faster (if I am peer pressured)! If you like it, please like, comment, and/or reblog!
It should have been her first kiss, Thaddeus knew that, but he also knew it was far from it.  She had been kissed well beyond a short peck on the lips, he would know.  Thaddeus also knew that a kiss from her was intoxicating.  It haunted you in your sleep. You woke up with the feeling of her soft lips on yours for months after they touched.  Thaddeus would know.  He had kissed her in his dreams—hell, he had done more than just kiss her in his dreams—and he knew the soft and sweet feeling of her lips was inescapable. He could not say that now. Had she wanted to kiss John?  Invited him to the most perfect pair of lips he’d ever seen with a smile?  Or had John stolen the kiss?  Grabbing her by her silks and pressing her lips to his?   If kissing her once upon the lips was enough to make John no better than a common scoundrel, what did that make Thaddeus who knew what the soft creamy skin of her bosom felt like on his lips?  He should not think of such things at the moment lest his body ache and give him away to the man before him.
Shout out @tallmadgeandtea, for distracting me so heavily in thee ye ol' group chat that I didn't realize my fic hadn't been updated for about a year love you, bestie like fr

Turn Week 2023: Day 2 — Content Creator Appreciation Day
In honor of today's prompt, I've put together a rec list of some of the Annlett fics I've enjoyed over the past few years. Leave a kudo and comment if you enjoy them, too!
And Now I Must Quit You by SheWasXena (NR, 23k, in progress):
Edmund Hewlett finds himself adrift after his broken engagement with Anna Strong. But when Anna seemingly pulls him back into her life, the two realize that their romance may be far from concluded.
fade into you by @viola-ophelia (G, ~600 words):
"No one had looked at Anna like that since– well, ever. She got the sense he saw something in her she’d never seen in herself..." anna jumps out of a boat and finds her way back to a different purpose than the one she'd thought she had.
Homecoming by violetdelights (G, 1.2k):
Major Edmund Hewlett has returned to Setauket, but he doesn't feel as if he has reached home until the night Anna finds him alone beneath a starless sky.
i look for love, i find a stone by @viola-ophelia (T, 1.9K):
would you help me rise up touch my face and watch me try to breathe again would you let me do this burn down the final wall Anna's feelings for Hewlett cause her to struggle with her personal loyalties.
Inklings and Overflowings by @lucyemers (G, ~700 words):
On the night Hewlett is kidnapped Anna thinks back over several moments and what they meant to her.
On This Cold Night by slushiepuff (G, 2.4k):
Her singular presence and no other meant fewer rules. They could be Anna and Edmund. They could sit a little too close. They could speak freely.
shattered ring by @viola-ophelia (G, 200 words):
"In the morning she’d wake up raw with the loss of him and keep on living." A set of two drabbles written for the ValenTURNs Day 2023 ship bingo. Hewlett sinks. Anna rises.
Sheet Bends and Sunscreen by @tortoisesshells (T, 1k):
A few moments in which Anna Smith Strong snoops on Edmund Hewlett's life via his reading choices - though, really, he's happy enough to talk that it truly isn't snooping?
yet Man is not consum’d by @tortoisesshells (G, 1.1k):
AU for 2x05: Smallpox arrives on the tails of the Rangers, and much of Setauket scrambles for quarantine or for variolation. In the midst of this, Anna Strong finds herself erstwhile nurse to the denizens of Whitehall - an occupation that gives her time to reflect on the help Major Hewlett has offered her.

This is the endgame of the chess game played by Hamilton and Tallmadge in the newest chapter of my spin on the redcoat hamilton madness that’s overtaken amrev rn, called “Murder, Lying, Glory, & Other Sins” in which a spy named Mr. Malcolm uses Lt. Col. John Laurens to get close with the rebels from the inside.
Do you know how to win as white in this position?  White to move, and black just moved pawn to g3.

Benjamin & Elizabeth Anniversary Snippet!
Hi, everyone! In honor of today's special SS&SP occasion, I wrote a little snippet from a random (but one of my favorites) early 1778 scene to celebrate Benjamin and Elizabeth and get back into the swing of writing them. This summer is hectic, and I know I have to heavily rework the next chapter, but I wanted to have some fun, so here we are! Thanks for sticking around, and for loving Benliz as much as I do! I hope you enjoy!
“Are you nervous?” Benjamin asked.
He stood beside her, his gaze intensely focused on the general’s quarters, searching through the windows as if he was looking for an invisible threat in the stone house. After spending the past several hours walking in and out of them, the houses faded into one another, blurs of brown, grays, and tans, the monotony occasionally broken by weathered white stucco and green shutters. Melted snow ran down the roofs, darkening the colors, but the windows caught the sunlight. Thank god, it was a beautiful day for her parade through camp.
The last thing the generals need to see is you soaking wet with dirt on your hem, she thought. How impossible would it be for them to take you seriously?
Hamilton knocked on the door. He turned over his shoulder. “Should just be a moment, Miss Walker! He surely must be home.”
“You know I am always a little nervous,” she told Benjamin, but she tried to smile, “it’s always a given, unfortunately.”
But it- it wasn’t a shame with him. It wasn’t a secret sin, tied around her heart with strong ropes. Something her father tried to restrain and keep in the shadows, unspoken and abandoned like every problem besides his Congress and his money and her brother’s behavior. She told him when she was nervous, and he fixed it-- with his voice, his words, a change in his presence. Not always-- no, you can never be that optimistic, Elizabeth- but enough.
Enough to keep her standing here.
“Are you tired, then?”
She laughed, “Tired? I’m accustomed to the schedule here-” she leaned in, whispered, “Benjamin.”
There, the classic head tilt, the sheepiness and shock in his eyes, a loosening of the rope.
“I am simply inquiring after your health-”
“Go ahead,” she pressed.
He briefly glanced at the door, the rest of the group.
“Elizabeth.”
God, it was risky.
But she loved hearing him say her name.
Only for a moment.
She found the straight to lean backward on her heels, running her hands along her skirts, but she laughed again. “I’m nervous, but I am not tired, and I’d like to meet the rest of the generals.”
“Of course,” he nodded, and followed her, transforming himself back into a professional officer. “A pity though.”
Oh, she couldn’t let that go. “Why? Will the general not like me? Surely his men have told him about me-” she held up a hand, “and I know we told them to keep my presence a security, but they like to chatter amongst themselves, and I hear the general is quite the talker-” Her nerves rose, her voice a pitch higher.”
“No,” he said solemnly.
“Then what is it? Oh, Major, tell me-”
She wanted him to tell her, and for a slight second, she wished they were alone. She wished they were alone, and that he could take her in his arms, and tell her gently. Let her down softly, as if he were helping her off her horse, a brush of tenderness, what had kept her stable half of her sleepless nights.
But all she could do was lean towards him, take a small step closer.
“A pity,” he said, his voice slow, “because I would love to do something about your hair.”
“My hair?”
She reached up. Mary had styled it differently today, into a plait, letting it cascade down her back, a delicate mess of curls. She smiled as she pinned the cocked hat into place, “Will the Generals approve, Miss Lizzie?”
But she didn’t care what they thought.
“Do you like it?” She whispered.
“A little too much. I want to rearrange it." Full of unnecessary conviction.
God, she almost rolled down the hill.
“That is not allowed, Major Tallmadge.”
Her mind was suddenly ambushed with the thought, the tantalizing vision of him running his hands through her hair, his fingers brushing against the skin behind her ear, her neck. Her heart raced, damn the nerves.
“Don’t laugh,” she ordered.
“I will not.”
In the distance, Hamilton knocked on the door again. “Damn the big man,” she heard him mutter to the marquis.
“We can compromise,” she said after inhaling a deep breath.
“How so?”
“The ground is a bit unsteady.” She lied.
“Yes,” he agreed.
“You can help.”
“I can.”
She looked down, and saw his hand leave the hilt of his sword, lingering in the air between them. Oh, if only she could take it.
The door opened.
And Benjamin’s hand was on the small of her back.
A quick stroke.
And it was better than any of her fleeting fantasies.
She was doing what she loved, and she wasn’t alone.
“Let’s go meet General Knox.”
Was keeping the secret fun?
She didn’t know, yet.
At least he was allowed to have his hand on her back.

turnsgiving week day four: “what if?”
Tumblr media
“i didn’t do it for the king. i did it for a woman.”
a while back, i tried to write a john andre turns AU that i never ended up finishing, but doing something ahistorical with his character is always on the back of my mind... i can count on one hand the number of times a movie or TV show has made me cry, and s3 episode 10 of TURN had me SOBBING lol. there’s something about a character death that just feels so... extraneous and preventable, that really gets me. arnold had already escaped, and he was the guilty one; why did andre have to die just for the patriots to ‘prove a point’? so for “what if” day, i tried something slightly different!
read it on ao3:  john andre survives, but at what cost?

Since I've been watching TURN, I've been thinking about Lydia Woodhull.
Since I created her years ago, other OCs have popped up with the same faceclaim. Now, I don't care that others use her. I don't have a monopoly on faceclaims. I'm just debating using someone new since there are a few more resources available since Lydia's creation.
*Suggestions don't have to be redheads. Any hair color is fine.

Benjamin held the door like a gentleman and stepped through, as Audrey followed behind him.
Though really, given the circumstances, she was by far the more dominating presence here.
It all seemed gaudy to him, the velvet chaise couches, the red, and the symbols of swords and roses painted flashily across the back wall. Ahead of them sat a blonde woman, small, blonde hair like some Greek classical painting.
Benjamin found himself at a loss for words, taken aback a bit. He’d seldom imagine a woman in such power, and yet, there the vampire prince sat, looking most dignified. Audrey gave him a gentle tugging glance and he spoke.
“Major Benjamin Tallmadge, I come in peace, I’d ask to be of service, given my standing, but I doubt you’d require it,” he said, as Audrey had instructed. Magdalena glanced between Tallmadge and Audrey, as though calculating pieces in chess. “Audrey, dearest,” Magdalena said sweetly. “We’ve explored much together in our friendship, haven’t we?” She asked rhetorically.
“Spare me a kiss before you leave, won’t you?” She asked, genuinely this time. “In any case, even if I wished to aid you financially, I couldn’t, that would breach the code of the masquerade… perhaps your de Lioncourt would be more appropriate to your assistance,” she suggested, it was truthful but there was something of a disheartening lack of warmth in the words.
An air of nervousness suddenly overcame Audrey, nevertheless, eyes briefly gazing at Ben, half desperately, either for assistance or something else, she isn’t sure. Audrey stepped forward kissing Magdalena on the cheek twice and once hard on the lips.
Magdalena wanted Audrey selfishly in the way many individuals seem to. Mouth to mouth, between her thighs, and in her bed. But she would simply have to bide her time for that, one night perhaps, law and order was always the first priority, Magdalena’s wishes could wait.
An odd grudging feeling suddenly took hold of Ben. He had no right to that, he knew, Audrey was to bargain their way out. He simply couldn’t imagine just what was being bargained for.
Leave all your love and your longing behind, you can't carry it with you if you want to survive…

Day 5 - Rewrite History!: TURN OC, Lydia Barnett
Lydia Barnett is a codebreaker for the Culper Spy Ring that has a fiery spirit. She hails from Philadelphia. After her husband, Laurence, suddenly died, the nature of his death was enough of a motivation to put all her effort into the war. Perhaps a few friends along the way can strengthen her motivation.
