in classic /derogatory) tumblr fashion the boop-o-meter isn't accessible. For screen reader users it just says the numbers, not what they represent. I'll just say in case anyone here uses a screen reader that the thing on top of your feed is the boop-o-meter, the first number is boops given by you, the second is boops received by you and the third is total boops on the platform

PSA: THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT BLACKLIST TAGGING
About Tumblr's Filtering Options:
Tumblr's tag filtering can only filter out the exact tag as is actually on the post.
Wildcards (*) do not work with tumblr's tag filtering system. As such, blacklisting #*example* to catch as many possible different tags as possible doesn't work. Even if it did, it would also then pose the same false positive issue as content filtering. Exact wording is important!
Correct spelling is necessary for tag filtering to work. Do not censor your tags.
Symbols and fancy copypaste fonts do not usually work in the tag filtering system.
Neither do they tend to work in URLs, meaning your tags might not work for navigation on your own blog.
Tumblr's post content filtering searches for exactly what the user asks to be filtered.
This may lead to false positives if the filtered word is part of another, unrelated word (example: posts about "writers" will be filtered for people who block "rite").
Tumblr's post content filtering is limited to 200 filtered words and/or phrases.
Both systems only support adding filters one at a time, and only to one system at a time. This can be both time-consuming and/or exhausting for some people to do, whereas it takes less time and energy for you to tag in a simplified manner.
for more information: Tag and Post Content Filtering [Tumblr Help Center]
----------
How Many, Many People Wish Content Warnings To Be Tagged:
______ tw
______ cw
______
Nothing more, and nothing less. If your posts even mention a thing, simply tag it as that thing, because each extra word you add to your tags is another tag that has to be filtered.
It is more helpful to have it tagged as the full content itself for filtering, and you state in the body of the post and/or in additional tags that it is only a mention, vaguely referenced, etc. rather than explicit descriptions and/or details.

for any other non-screen reader users who have been unknowingly using alt text thinking its accessible:
the images on this site that have alt text are totally inaccessible to screen readers if opened or viewed in a different tab.
if it's opened in the dash, all you hear is "close image" (because it's wrapped in a button and buttons make children presentational). i'm guessing tumblr already knows this, though, or they'd have fixed the fact that the alt is automatically changed to "Image". just "Image".
if you open it in a new tab, the alt is the url of the image. again, this is for images that users have added alt text to. the description exists.
the only reason to use the alt text feature instead of the post body, despite the lack of visibility and tininess of the button, is so that the description would still be associated with the image when opened or viewed in a new tab. which is not an unusual use case because not all SR users are blind.
so, i guess don't use the alt text feature if you don't want the ID to disappear whenever a user tries to swipe through a photoset or open the image.
@staff please fix this. if we've taken the time to add alt text, we're expecting that our followers & others will be able to use it. this is really disappointing.

hey tumblr, what's the point in letting me report an ad as containing flashing images when doing so a) does not hide the ad and i still have to scroll by it b) does not even temporarily block the ad from being shown to me and i end up seeing it dozens more times that week?

When will tumblr recognise it's a blogging platform with social elements, NOT a social media platform and THAT THAT IS A GOOD THING?!
I'm sick of 'influencers' instead of people being their genuine selves. I'm sick of 'content creation' rather than sharing passions and creativity.
Have you ever watched some of the vids of youtubers after they've burned themselves out? Where they were so desperate to meet their daily schedules that they often broke down because they felt they couldn't even take a fucking break without losing followers?! It's depressing as hell, and I feel for them, because while my work was different, I burned out so bad it destroyed my health and left me permanently and irreversibly disabled.
So no, I don't want my blogging platform to be a fucking twitter clone. I left twitter after they switched to the very UI tumblr's now copying because it's severely overstimulating to even just attempt to read the timeline, much less navigate to see any of the replies and everything else that twitter was actively hostile towards in making things actually social.
As it is, I'm now having to run multiple stylesheets, two userscripts, and a browser extension to even make tumblr remotely usable. I rarely need any of that on other sites! Hell, on most sites, I don't need any of that at all, and I shouldn't have to!

Hello! Does anyone know how to make the iPhone read content on tumblr? I use the accessibility “read screen” feature *constantly* for executive function reasons, but I tried to get it to read a fic on tumblr tonight and it wouldn’t work. Do I need an external app? I can always use the iPhone screen reader for ao3 so I’m curious…
Thanks if you know!

Tumblr alt text
Genuine Tumblr question: I noticed people include image descriptions in the body of a post (which, as an advocate for making the internet more accessible, I love!). Is there a reason people do that rather than adding the description into the alt text? (Which is pretty common practice for accessibility) is it just from not knowing how to? Or do people prefer that method more? Is it something I just don't know because I've only been on Tumblr since last June?
On the off chance it's from not knowing, you can add alt text to an image itself!
Add alt text to an image
I'll use this photo of my dog Yoshi as an example. This is for mobile, but the process is the same for desktop.
Upload the photo as normal.
Tumblr media
Then, click the three dots in the bottom right corner. And click "add alt text."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Enter your alt text!
Tumblr media
There are best practices with how to write alt text (see this article for some) but basically, include any text that shows up in the image and then a description of the focal points of the image. How would you describe this photo if you were telling someone about it over the phone?
If your screenshot has lots of text, you can copy/paste the text from where you originally took the screenshot. Or, you can use an app like Google Lens to pull the words out to paste.
If you want to check it worked, publish the post and look for the ALT icon at the bottom left of the photo. You can even read it by clicking it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hope that helps! Adding alt text is one easy way to be more inclusive with what you post online. Make it a habit and let more people enjoy your shitposts!

tumblr said they fixed the animated pfp's, but they're... still animating on web?
i'm seeing animated avatars on this account, which doesn't have the shitty UI update, and on my main account which does. i thought it was just because i was on mobile browser which i doubt is exactly staff's top priority, but i'm on desktop and animated avatars are still happening. wtf

Y'all, is anybody else experiencing not having DMs on your main account all of the sudden? I saw @blorbopoll and @thecompetitionshowdowntournament have this problem (the latter now on both their main and this one, if I'm correct) and at first I thought it was just a simple glitch that could be fixed (when I saw the second one, I got extremely concerned but thought it was just a glitch yet again. Rooky mistake), but when I saw @specialshinytrinkets have this exact same problem and they told me on her other account that they have tried everything and it still didn't work, I then realised that

(Derogatory)
So I am making this post on Tumblr to address this situation to pass this around. Maybe Staff will see this, maybe not. Who knows, but at least other users will realise that they are not alone on this problem.
Also, I have a question for a lot of you,
Please boost this around and tell me if I have made a mistake, I can correct this post in no time ^^

MOBILE APP FRIENDLY PAGE LINKS
Adding https://href.li/? to the start of your urls to pages will force the tumblr app to treat the link like an offsite url, which will open the page inside the mobile browser.
This is best paired with responsive themes and/or page coding, which utilises modern HTML and other coding languages to enable a page to adapt to various screen resolutions, making the pages easier to view on a wider range of devices.
For those not versed in web development: What this prefix does is hides the referrer, which tells websites where the link you clicked to access their site is located.

ALT TEXT NOW SHOWS UP ON THE TUMBLR MOBILE APP!
ALT TEXT NOW SHOWS UP ON THE TUMBLR MOBILE APP!
Woohoo! Fucking finally.
They could still do make many changes to make it easier to write (like not having the text box cover the image you're trying to describe 🙄) and I'm sure many things to make it more accessible, but this is a step in the right direction.

Why does Tumblr suddenly stop adding what I've typed? I look up and I see that it's stopped and missed so much and I have to retype and it's missed again and ...?
I have coordination issues so touch-typing will never be an option.

tumblr blackout proposal
tumblr mobile has steadily become near unusable these past few updates. not just from a user experience perspective (which is important enough in itself) but also from an accessibility perspective.
examples include the new way the image viewer works (if you can call it "working"), the tumblr live button replacing the profile button, and that newly created blogs will be forced to have their main dashboard tab be the 'for you' page.
the demands of the protest would be along the lines of:
reverse the recent image viewer update
scrap the new users 'for you' page default setting
let us turn off tumblr live indefinitely
increase efforts against spam / porn bots
make reporting abuse and hate speech as easy as reporting as reporting spam
let us go nuts show nuts again... for real this time
remove flashing ads, including not accepting blaze campaigns for posts with flashing in them
commit to improving usability and accessibility, and listening to users!
(suggestions welcome!)
to protest against these usability issues, and inspired by the recent reddit blackout, i propose a 48 hour blackout (where you don't use tumblr at all). preferably of both mobile and web (since web has problems too) but mobile is the focus here.
[edit: a 'blackout' is when you don't log in, or interact with the site at all, for [x] amount of time.]
I suggest from the 30th of June.
this marks the end of pride month (for the "queerest place on the internet") and the start of disability month (since accessibility is a massive issue here).
tumblr office is in San Francisco, USA, so the times and dates will be calculated using their time zone (PDT).
you can find out the times and dates for your timezone here.
i can't afford to blaze this post so please spread it around as much as possible! protests only work if significant numbers show up!
edit: tumblr rejected the blaze campaigns for this post because they know it would hurt them. let's make this an indefinite blackout - it's the best way to get results.
edit 2: plain text version of this post
