if you have "original characters do not interact" or some form of anti-original character language in your rules... you are weak and will not survive the winter. you're missing out on unbelievably inventive characters created by your deeply passionate peers. you're missing out on so many types of interactions and unique perspectives not found in current mainstream media and the content it produces. there are so many talented people in the rpc with amazing original characters, and you're just writing them off for no reason. what a shame.

how to fix broken notifications
i see @rpschtuff made a post explaining the glitch, and @shinsources posted a work around by subscribing to threads. this does get the job done, but it can be tedious and it doesn't work all posts. i actually had this no-notifications glitch some weeks ago and emailed tumblr about it, and staff walked me through an actual solution.
anyways. here's how you fix it:
open the tumblr app on your phone
go to account settings
then click notifications
enable conversational notes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and that's it. now you should get notifications on your activity page both on mobile and desktop.
EDIT: as of may 2nd staff has fixed the notifications bug

You know what I think?? I think we need to stop apologizing for not being so active on here constantly — especially in the RPC. People often forget that roleplaying isn't a job. Roleplaying is a hobby. I know I've been bad about this in the past but ... like ... shit happens. Our health comes first. How are we supposed to be at our best and help people if we're at an all time low?? So if going onto your roleplaying blog to post OOC stuff makes you feel better then so be it. Not only that but we're not obligated to explain every little detail about our everyday lives. So you do you and focus on your health first even if it means taking 5 whole ass months (or years, even) off of roleplaying and Tumblr. Because ... let's be real ... as much as we all love and cherish Tumblr it's also a hellhole and extremely stressful at times.
So repeat after me: ROLEPLAYING IS A HOBBY AND NOT A JOB.

Gentle reminder that in an RPC;
Things don't have to happen on the tumblr dash to be considered "canon" for your OCs/Muses--DMs/alternative social media interactions can also be valid
Introductory threads aren't MANDATORY
Timelines who??? More like who CARES, jump around if you want to
You can reclaim depictions of "Canon" characters that you don't like/agree with and make them your own
Headcanon whatever the hell you want
Embellish whatever you want
You are allowed to soft block/block people on your dash that just don't vibe with your style--it's YOUR dash, curate it how YOU want it to be
On the other side of that, don't take offense/take it personally if someone blocks you. That's their right just as much as it is yours.
Feel free to reblog/add any other points you'd like

PSA: THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT BLACKLIST TAGGING
About Tumblr's Filtering Options:
Tumblr's tag filtering can only filter out the exact tag as is actually on the post.
Wildcards (*) do not work with tumblr's tag filtering system. As such, blacklisting #*example* to catch as many possible different tags as possible doesn't work. Even if it did, it would also then pose the same false positive issue as content filtering. Exact wording is important!
Correct spelling is necessary for tag filtering to work. Do not censor your tags.
Symbols and fancy copypaste fonts do not usually work in the tag filtering system.
Neither do they tend to work in URLs, meaning your tags might not work for navigation on your own blog.
Tumblr's post content filtering searches for exactly what the user asks to be filtered.
This may lead to false positives if the filtered word is part of another, unrelated word (example: posts about "writers" will be filtered for people who block "rite").
Tumblr's post content filtering is limited to 200 filtered words and/or phrases.
Both systems only support adding filters one at a time, and only to one system at a time. This can be both time-consuming and/or exhausting for some people to do, whereas it takes less time and energy for you to tag in a simplified manner.
for more information: Tag and Post Content Filtering [Tumblr Help Center]
----------
How Many, Many People Wish Content Warnings To Be Tagged:
______ tw
______ cw
______
Nothing more, and nothing less. If your posts even mention a thing, simply tag it as that thing, because each extra word you add to your tags is another tag that has to be filtered.
It is more helpful to have it tagged as the full content itself for filtering, and you state in the body of the post and/or in additional tags that it is only a mention, vaguely referenced, etc. rather than explicit descriptions and/or details.

Please, for the millionth time, RPC:
STOP with the: "You're so quality I feel dumb around you, so I can't reply to your stuff, and I just can't come up with anything because I can't match your XYZ"
Listen. If I am writing with you, shipping with you, messaging you, and we share our ideas together, that means I like you, your characterizations, and your muse/s, and there's literally no need to withhold your responses because you think I write "better" than you. I do NOT think you're less than me, but I do feel like crap, because you are using your own feelings of inadequacy to put a barrier between us and our characters, so then nobody gets anything, and all our stuff is put into a forever stasis, never going anywhere. And now, we're both stuck with nothing going on our blogs. How's that fun for either of us? Isn't that counterintuitive? This is not about writer's block, btw. I understand writer's block. But this tumblr rpc method of telling your partners: "I can't measure up to you," makes both parties feel bad about themselves, so why do it?
Being told you're "too quality" doesn't compliment us, it makes us feel the opposite. It makes us feel like we suck as a partner, actually. It makes us feel like no one wants to write with us because we write a "certain way" and dare to try and write our characters a bit deeper than some of the more casual writers here. So somehow, we hurt our partners everytime we put words to our screen. It makes all of us slapped with this so-called "compliment" feel like undesirables, and that somehow we aren't fun and exciting, we're just here to look at through a plexiglass box, then pass by when you're done. It makes us feel like you're saying: "Please water yourself down and take away all the cool stuff I like about you so I don't feel bad writing with you."
I know that's not always the case, but that's how it makes us feel. This is the other side of the story.
Being put on a pedestal is utter crap.

Can’t paste a meme into an askbox? Any of these quick methods work for pasting a bullet pointed meme on desktop:
Right click -> paste as plain text
Ctrl+shift+v to paste as plain text (or shift+command+v on mac)
Go to the askbox via the blog’s actual theme instead of the dashboard theme (url.tumblr.com/ask, not tumblr.com/new/ask/url)
Copy everything in the sentence except the first or last quotation mark, then paste and manually add the missing quotation mark back in
Paste into a notepad/google doc/url bar/etc, then copy again from there before pasting into the askbox

a gentle reminder for those who may be struggling...
you being here and having fun writing with others is enough to be in the rpc. you are enough just by virtue of being present. you are loved, you will find your crowd, and you have so many stories to write. don't compare yourself with others - instead focus on doing what brings you happiness and fulfillment.
i'm so glad you're here. i'm so glad you're alive. 💕

PSA that you can still reblog from the original post if you click the negative space NEXT to the URL on desktop.
Is this intuitive? No, not in the slightest. Hopefully they walk it back. But reblogging from your moots isn't the only option.

FIVE TIPS FOR WRITING BETTER ROLEPLAY REPLIES struggling to get interactions? try incorporating these tips into your replies!
use the five senses. sight, smell, touch, hearing, taste. where are your muses currently standing? what does the air smell like? are there birds chirping or people walking by? is there a battle in the distance? does the wooden floor beneath them creak when they walk? is the other muse wearing cologne or perfume? describe the world around them in vivid detail and paint a picture of their environment. this will help your writing partner envision the space.
don't keep everything internal. your muse's internal commentary is important, of course, but when an entire reply is only their inner thoughts, it doesn't give your writing partner anything to go on (unless their character can read minds). make sure you add action, story progression, or character movement in a reply, or provide enough dialogue for the other muse to respond to.
end your reply with a question. at the very end of your reply, have your muse ask the other character a question, or pepper a few questions throughout the reply. this gives the other writer a perfect jumping off point for their response.
incorporate npcs and other things happening nearby. maybe your muses are in a library, and the librarian won't stop shushing them. maybe your muse gets a call from their best friend in the middle of the conversation with horrible news. maybe your muses are in a hotel room, and they hear a noisy party in the room next door. your muses aren't the only two people in the universe - expand upon it with details and breathe further life into this world. it makes things so much more fun.
don't forget the other muse. i think we all struggle with this one the most. we get so caught up describing our own muse and their own thoughts and actions that we forget they're interacting with someone else. try describing the other character's stance or facial expression, the way they cross their arms. maybe their makeup is really beautiful. maybe their hair is nice. maybe they smell really bad. maybe the last time your muses interacted, they had a big fight. don't take up your entire reply talking about your muse only; talk about the other character. give the other writer something to smile about and comment on - "i loved what your muse noticed about mine! i loved their observations! they were so right!" make the other writer feel seen. this is a great way to show them you're reading their replies, loving their writing, and noticing little details about their muse.

friendly reminder to actually socialize and follow fellow roleplayers you're genuinely interested in interacting with / like seeing on your dash. you can't expect every little thing to be handed to you for free just because you're "shy". that's not how the roleplaying community works. not only that but i personally feel like that's a genuine insult to those who actually suffer from social anxiety / agoraphobia / neurodivergent disorders. sometimes you just have break out of your comfort zone and be the bigger person.
now i'm not saying that being shy isn't valid but you have to keep in mind that there are people who are just like you out there in the rpc. you know that feeling you get when someone tells you "hey, i love love love your portrayal! i'd love to interact with you sometime!" it's the greatest feeling in the world. so do your moots a solid and return the favor by telling them how you love their portrayals and the next thing you know the two of you might end up being best friends and permanent rping buddies.
so make sure to reblog your mutuals' promos and ramble about why you love them in the tags. also make sure to look at the blogs your mutuals just promo'ed and see why people follow / interact with them. and, whatever you do, don't forget to read their rules! you need to make sure that the two of you mesh well before interacting!

THE TERM "DRABBLE"
So I can almost guarantee that a vast majority of us in the RPC have all written drabbles at one point or another, right? I know I definitely have way back when I first started RPing here on Tumblr back in 2014. But here's the thing ... most of the time the drabbles we're writing aren't actually drabbles ... they're more in-line with the term oneshots.
By definition, a drabble is a short fiction that consists of exactly 100 words as explained on Wikipedia. No more, no less. And, as said on Wikipedia, the reason for this is to, and I quote, "test the author's ability to express interesting and meaningful ideas in a confined space."
Then we have the term oneshot which means, by definition, "being the only one; not part of a series" according to Collins Dictionary and "a magazine, brochure, or the like that is published only one time, with no subsequent issues intended, usually containing articles and photographs devoted to one topical subject." according to Dictionary.com.
Now why did we all start calling them drabbles in the RPC instead of oneshots? IDK. I really don't. I have some hypotheses and theories on why but no actual confirmations or proof. All I know is that I think we ought to start using the term oneshot instead of drabble if it's more or less than 100 words but that's just me.

long have i seen folks in the writing community write and create DNIs on their rules for folks to abide from. which, in itself, is okay! however, people often mistake a DNI as being a boundary when the reality is that they are not.
DNIs are not boundaries, they are requests.
Please understand that what i am referring to here are DNIs that are more PERSONAL to an individual.
General DNIs that most people have the same or similar names for extremely valid and warranted reasons due to their obviously hostile, toxic, and harmful behaviors are NOT what i am talking about here.
While the reasons for personal DNIs are indeed VALID for individuals, what is discomforting for me about many that i have seen are the 'make or break' attitudes that often come with them.
i do truly believe that people should normalize making boundaries for themselves without forcing it upon others and creating ultimatums or asking for requests.
People are allowed to block folks who they do not vibe with. people are allowed to set up said boundaries. But, please DO NOT gatekeep people. i simply do not believe anybody is within their right to force people's hands without being toxic.
Remember, making a boundary is allowed but there is a difference between healthy boundaries and controlling behavior. By definition, a boundary is about YOUR own actions, not somebody else's. There is also a difference between setting a boundary, asking a request, and creating an ultimatum.
setting boundaries is fine. asking for a request is okay, sometimes. creating an ultimatum is not healthy.
A request is: i do not like this person, do not follow them. A boundary is: i do not like this person, if you follow them, then I will not follow you.
a DNI, which stands for 'Do Not Interact' is an explicit request for folks to NOT INTERACT with them if they write X or follow Y. DNIs are not always bad by themselves as they do often come with boundaries:
'dni if xyz because i will not engage in those subjects or want to be close to this person' (notice how the boundary given here is in bold.)
Please remember that DNIs alone are not boundaries though, they are requests. which, i cannot stress this enough, are not always bad. you are allowed to do whatever it is to create a safe place for yourself and curate your dashboard to your own liking.
you are allowed to have a personal DNI. it’s always okay to have them, and i am not saying that anybody shouldn't have them. ultimately, it is how you want to curate your space for yourself. folks are allowed to have their own social circles where they feel safe and comfortable and welcomed.
I also do believe that folks should be allowed to make decisions for themselves as well when it comes to personal relationships outside of social groups.
while you may not get along with a certain individual, that does not necessarily mean that it is the same for others.  forcing another to 'pick' between you or another person is a very harmful mentality to have.
yes, you are allowed and you are so valid in whatever feelings you may have towards/about somebody, but that is YOUR relationship/opinion about that person alone, not anybody else's.
Folks really need to normalize that it is okay if their friends talk to somebody that they don't like on a personal level. its okay if your friend wants to remain a neutral party because they would rather not get involved. its something that shouldn't be and isn't going to be a subject of discussion for the two of you, and it should be respected by both parties.
you can have healthy relationships with boundaries without making ultimatums or requests from others that may put them in an awkward position, especially since personal DNIs are often just personal for yourself. at the end of the day, it is still up to you on what YOU want to do to curate your internet safe space, but please don't do it in a matter where it forces folks into a 'its me or them' decision. that is not fair and it can be controlling and uncomfortable.
i do believe people are allowed to feel safe, but they should not do it with a forced decision of another or make them feel like they have to make a choice between you or another.

HEADS UP FELLOW MEME MAKERS:
Do not use bullet points and numbers to format your memes. You can't copy/paste into people's ask boxes now. Whether it's a glitch from the latest updates, or tumblr coders' idiot choice, sending memes just got harder.
The only way to copy/paste a meme into someone's askbox when it's formatted with bullet/numbers, is to copy the WHOLE meme set into a separate text box and reformat it as "regular".
THEN you, the sender can copy and paste it as a simple text line into the receiver's box.
This is not doable for mobile users at ALL.
SO unless they fix this, for the time being, please create memes simply with no bullets or numbers.
