More Antony Facts:

Antony is the second eldest of four siblings (two brothers and a sister.)  They’re all a chaotic bunch who would kill god for each other - if only to kill their sibling first.

The Aiello farm is huge, well-established, and functions almost like it’s own clan, with multiple families living in various separate buildings on the property, including aunts, uncles, cousins, and unrelated folks who have integrated into the group.  Antony’s immediate family is considered the head family of the group, and they serve as arbiters when there are disputes.

All of these people mean that kids who stick around the farm (all of Antony’s siblings have) can specialize into what they like for the most part.  Antony has learned orchard care from his grandparents, and as they have been tending the land so long, it is a sympathetic growing pattern which is carefully maintained all round.

Antony is highly skilled in grafting, transplanting, tree maintenance, propagation, land and water use, coppicing, etc.  The land they are on primarily is suitable for citrus, olive, cork, almond, pomegranate, loquat (original specimens imported by Antony’s great-grandparents), quince, mulberry, carob, and fig trees, all of which are represented on the property in varying amounts (some simply for family use - others for sale and export.)

The Plague was hard on the family, after the deaths of some of Antony’s extended relations, his great-grand father and then his grandparents took to being the ones to take care of in-town business in the hope of sparing the younger generations of whatever was happening in Vesuvia.

Antony lost his great-grandfather (last remaining of that generation) as well as three of his grandparents to the plague.  His mother’s father survived owing to being primarily home-bound by an old injury (he did want to go, but the family decided against it), and he has tremendous survivor’s guilt for it.  Antony’s mother is considered head of the house these days.

Antony is quite close to his remaining grandfather, as he formerly tended the orchards as well.

The extensive grounds of the Aiello farm are close to bordering with those of Valerius’ estate, and the Aiello family have an ongoing friendly prank war with the working families of their neighbors.  While sabotaging crops is strictly off-limits, moving scarecrows, building terrifying edifices overnight, haunting, spooking, and otherwise harassing each other has been going on for generations.  It’s generally friendly in nature even if it’s terrifying in execution.

Antony is always eager to participate, although he and his cousins have given up on using homemade fireworks for it after they nearly DID cause an incident (he still sometimes makes them for family celebrations though - he’s a little too good at chemistry for his own good sometimes.)

While not particularly outgoing, he’s still an energetic and clever sort, and can and will get into whatever mischief he and his buddies can manage.  He has never wanted for idiots his age to do dumb shit with given the number of people on his family’s farm.

On his own, when not dutifully attending his work, he likes to sunbathe and swim naked, go for runs/rides/hikes, and generally keep his body busy (and yes this absolutely means ‘I’m trying to prune trees in the west field but the clap of my ass cheeks keeps alerting the forest spirits to my location - hope they don’t wreck me...’)

He has been an eager participant in Vesuvia’s kink scene since stumbling on it years ago, and enjoys being played with an passed around.

He did not transition until puberty, which upon hitting it went ‘NOPE THIS IS WRONG’ and took steps to sort himself (as with Liliana, this has been fine with his family as per social norms of the area.)

His carefree approach to life and general penchant for chaos helped to bring Liliana out of her shell a bit when they were new friends.  She thinks he’s overly brash, but his rather cavalier approach to safety did help nudge her away from being overly cautious.

A deeply romantic soul, he’s been in and out of love multiple times, and tends to fall hard and fast then realize he’s being a bit of a fool over someone he barely knows.  The consistency of the kink scene and his friends therein have kept him from having any major emotional meltdowns over his romantic life, and as of the present he wouldn’t mind a partner but is also happy where he is.

As of the events of ‘The Arcana’ he is in his early 40s.

Look at my pretty girl. I seldom get photos of her this good because she’s, true to her name (Skit) rather skittish. She’s a Five Keeled or Oaxacan Spiny Tailed Iguana, one of the smallest species in the world, second only to the Yucatan species. She is fully grown at 14 inches long (total length, her snout to vent length is about 6 inches).

I would love to use her as an educational resource. You see, Skit was wild caught. We know she was wild caught because 1, her species basically doesn’t exist in captivity at all, and therefore finding a captive bred one would be close to impossible, and 2, because she was tested for parasites as all iguana species should be, and found to have a specific parasite found mostly in her native range. (Oaxaca, Mexico)

I got Skit from a stranger online who posted her in a facebook group asking for help. No one knew what species she was, not even me until I got ahold of some Ctenosauria experts After I took her home. She was very malnourished, because the previous owner couldn’t get her to eat anything at all, and since that person had never had an iguana, never mind a delicate semi-arid species, she didn’t house her correctly either.

Skit did not recognise food in a dish as food. That was problem number one. She’d grown up in the wild, where food was on branches, or growing from the ground. So I had to feed her selectively pruned mulberry and hibiscus leaves still on the branch from my yard. (Which there’s no pesticides in; our neighbours don’t use them either due to borough ordinances). And slowly but surely train her to understand that the leaves in her bowl were the same as was on the branches.

She was also completely batshit crazy scared of me. More than once this terrified lizard tried to bite me and ran up my arm in pure terror, desperate to escape my hands. To this day hands are bad. She hates hands. She will bite hands, but not before bolting so hard she will injure herself trying to get away from them. I’ve tried all manner of things to ease her fears, and over the last three or so years I’ve had her we’ve made immense progress — she will patiently wait on her station under her lamp in the second picture(she taught herself to do this) while I place the food in her enclosure, without bolting, and rarely, if I’m very quiet and don’t stare directly at her, she will let me watch her eat.

She will selectively take food from tongs, but they must be long enough to keep my hands away. She is still terrified of being touched by fingers, so if I need to touch her to help with shedding skin or something I use a soft paintbrush with some aloe on it.

If for any reason I need to remove her from the enclosure I have to trap her. It’s way too stressful to grab her and she can bite through a goatskin leather glove. (I learned this the hard way while transferring her to this enclosure from her old one). The trap needs to be different every time, because iguanas are very clever and she will not fall for the same trap twice.

But the hardest part of all was figuring out what habitat to create for her. Five Keels are so rare in the hobby as to be practically unheard of. There are no care sheets for this species. I had to figure it out all by my lonesome.

And I’ve had great success, considering I’ve kept her alive and healthy so far. The reason this species is so rare is because they don’t often adapt to captivity very easily, and are super delicate. They also have a small geographical range and are critically endangered in that range, so she either came here as an incidental on a plant (possible since she was a juvenile the size of an anole when I got her) or was smuggled. But either way I had no recourse whatsoever with how to take care of her.

I wound up looking up meticulously the average humidity, temperature, UV exposure and species of tree found in Oaxaca, on the pacific side where these animals are native. I’ve since done all I can to replicate that environment using cork rounds to replace tree hollows, as many plants as she will allow (she still prefers to eat them so I can only plant edible or non toxic ones; thus far she doesn’t like the taste of spider plants, chlorophytum sp. So that’s what’s thriving in there).

I constantly wonder if there’s something better I could be doing. I’m forever trying to add height to her enclosure and plan to get an even bigger one for her to explore since she’s much calmer when she knows she has places to get away. I hate to say it but I’ve grown rather attached to her despite knowing that she’s not an especially hardy species and could theoretically perish for any reason or none at all.

But she’s a little survivor.

I’m not sure why I’m making this post to be honest. Maybe because I want people to know that if all else fails replicating an animals native environment is almost always a good idea (unless it’s a tarantula or other species that for some reason actually does not appreciate a “wild” environment, but one that caters to them very specifically even if it’s quite far from looking like their native habitat, OR if it’s a domestic species whose native habitat is Our habitat or one we make for them, like button quail or house mice) especially if it’s not an animal that’s common.

Maybe I just wanted to share because it’s a pretty incredible experience to even have the opportunity. And maybe I want to caveat against people trying to get “cool” pets on the off hand she was smuggled, because not to toot my own horn but I am pretty sure if she’d ended up in anyone else’s hands she’d probably of died. If I didn’t have the experience I do with not only iguanas but other exotic species, and hadn’t of thought to meticulously do the research, she might’ve died. She almost certainly would have starved if I didn’t happen to have a mulberry tree in my back yard and have the sense to think to offer her fresh foliages, and if she was a less smart iguana she’d of never put two and two together to eat out of a bowl.

A combination of story, chance and warning. I think that’s why I’m putting this here.

Finally got this done and it’s just smut, y’all, dark and dirty smut.

For weeks you’d been coming to the large house hidden away behind the winding driveway, trees carefully lined its borders. Weeks and you had yet to met its owner. On your first day, instructions had been left in a letter beside a bottle of water. The list was typed out and terse. A roster of duties.

Every Sunday you drove up the carefully laid mosaic drive and lugged your bag with you, returning to your beat-up truck only to fetch the electric trimmers. Weeds, pruning, hedges, flowers… It was your typical work, the only difference was your still anonymous and unseen employer.

The same water bottle sat on the front step, the same list. You didn’t need to read it at this point. You began your work, your jeans soon filthy with soil and grass stains as you made your way around the exterior of the house. Then there were the bushes along the perimeter. That always took much longer.

You opted for a break before you went about the last half of the list. You sat on the step and drank from the glass bottle. You replaced the attached cork and stood, stretching as the sun reached its peak above you.

“The sunflowers are starting to droop,” The voice scared you and you spun in surprise to face the man who stood on the other side of the screen door. You hadn’t even heard it open. “My mother chose them, you see? I find them tacky. They stick out like a sore thumb.”

“Oh,” You blinked. He watched you dully as you set down the glass bottle. “I could… re-home them. As long as I can dig out the roots.”

“Burn ‘em for all I care,” He scoffed. His blue eyes looked you up and down. “You’re a lot more diligent than the last gardener.”

“Thank… you,” You said awkwardly. 

He leaned his elbow against the door frame as he peered through the screen. His dark blond hair was combed back neatly, his broad shoulders stretched the cotton henley. He looked like any trust funder you’d met. “I should get back to work.”

“Mmhmm,” He nodded and disappeared.

You turned slowly and grabbed your bag of tools. You wanted to look back but didn’t as you crossed to the hedges along the walkway. You knelt and began your careful pruning. You inched down the bushes, snip, snip, snip. The sun beat down as you reached the end and stood.

“She stole,” You winced as you were once more frightened by the man. “Can’t help but wonder why considering how much I’m paying to have leaves cut.”

“I’m sorry she did that,” You squinted as the sun seared your eyes. “Um…”

“Ransom Drysdale,” He introduced himself. “I have your card. I know your name.”

“Well, I was just about to do the back. I just need to… um, get there.” You bent and tucked your shears into your bag and lifted it.

“Looks good, so far,” He said as he followed you from the other side of the hedge. “I can get you some more water.”

“I’m almost done,” You assured him. “But thank you.”

“Alright,” He stopped and you carried on. 

You felt him watched you as you disappeared around the back of the house. As you set up, you fought to focus on the work. The rose bushes were always the most obstinate. You took out your pruners and set to detaching the dying buds and stray branches.

As you moved from the white petals to the reds, you sensed something. You glanced over. The man, Ransom, was sat in one of the lawn chairs on the patio outside the tall glass doors. He was far but not so far away that you couldn’t tell he watched you. Well, if his last gardener had sticky fingers, how could you blame him?

You finished up and looked around one last time. You buckled up your large bag and slid the folded paper out of the side pocket, running down the list just to make sure. As you stood, bag slung over your shoulder, you found that your employer had gone as swiftly as he’d appeared.

You hauled it back around the house. The water bottle was gone. You went to your truck and dumped your bag in the bed. You climbed in the front and turned the engine. It kicked up but as you shifted into reverse, then puttered and died. You tried again. Odd. You’d just had it in for an oil change and they said it was in good shape.

You got out and walked around the pick-up. You checked out every inch then opened the hood. You didn’t really know what you were looking for. A shadow came up behind you and two large hands settled on the truck’s nose, a pair of thick arms blocking you in.

“Problem?” Ransom’s warm breath tickled your scalp. You went rigid, unsure of what to do. You didn’t know what to do.

 “No.” You said. “Probably just overheated.”

You pushed against his arm but he didn’t move. You grabbed the other which proved just as immovable. You turned around in the tight space between him and the truck.

“What are you doing?”

“Just having a look,” He said coolly. “You think it’s the battery?”

“I don’t know.” You tried to sidestep him again but he still wouldn’t move. “Let me go.”

“You know, at first, I watched you because I was bored. Then it became almost a hobby. Something to look forward to.” He leaned in and you could smell his cologne. “Then I thought about you. After. And you just kept popping up in my head.”

“I don’t know you.” You said firmly. “Get away from me so I can call a tow.”

“It’ll take them at least an hour to get out here.” He said. “What are you supposed to do while you wait?”

“Stop.” You grabbed his arm and pushed. He chuckled at your pathetic attempt to move him. “What do you want?”

“I’m sure you can guess.” 

He reached up and grabbed the lip of the hood. His other hand went to your throat as he backed up just a little and drew you with him. He closed the hood with a bang and you flinched. You grasped his wrist and twisted. He barely seemed to notice as his fingers tightened. 

He leaned in and his chiseled features turned malicious. He grabbed your shoulder and spun you to face the truck. He pushed you against the hood and you caught yourself on the hot metal. He crushed you with his body and his hot breath glossed over your head.

“I lied.” He nuzzled your head. “The last gardener quit. He hated the commute.”

“Get off.” You tried to elbow him and he grabbed the back of your head. He slammed it down onto the truck and held you there. “Ow, stop!”

“And on top of finding a new gardener, the bitch I called a girlfriend decided she needed to follow her dreams or whatever shallow shit those spoiled princesses believe these days.” He growled and pushed his crotch into your ass. “And then you show up. Sweet little flower girl. Hard worker… and for what? A beat up Ford and dirt under your nails.”

“Let me go!”

“You know I pay well to have the flowers watered, how much do you think I’d pay for… personal services?”

“You’re disgusting.” You hissed.

“Well,” He laughed. “I guess I don’t have to pay.”

He pulled on the back of your jeans as you wriggled against the hood, the metal seared your cheek. His arm snaked around you as he picked your fly open and pushed his hand down the front of your panties. You gasped as he kicked your feet apart and force his fingers between your legs.

“You like to get dirty, flower girl?” He muttered in your ear. “Hmm.” He rubbed his fingers along your folds. “I think that’s my answer.”

You closed your eyes. You were wet. Sweat, mostly, from the day in the sun, but more. Adrenaline, fear… He shoved a finger inside you and you squeaked. Your feet slipped on the stone work below.

“Please… stop,” You begged and he pushed another finger in.

“Weird how you don’t sound like you mean it,” He drew his fingers in and out as he pressed the heel of his hand to your clit. “How it feels…” He paused as you trembled. “Like you want it.”

“Ransom, Ransom…” You said his name. “Please. This isn’t--”

He filled you to his knuckles and you whimpered.

“Shhh,” He breathed. “This is a respectable neighbourhood… not that anyone can hear you.”

He slid his fingers out of you and left a slick trail along your pelvis as he pulled back. He ripped down your jeans from behind. His hand moved to your neck and he squeezed painfully. He wrenched your panties down and pinched your bare ass. You whined and kicked helplessly.

You pushed on the hood, trying to force him off. You only ended up with your ass pressed against him.

“Oh, I like that,” He stepped back and slapped your ass. “You really think you can win.”

“Please--”

He slapped you again. You swallowed your protests and he shifted behind you. The smooth whisper of a zipper followed and had you tensed against the truck. Your sweaty hands slipped over the metal.

He prodded you with his tip as he stepped closer. He bent his knees against your legs. He guided his dick along your cunt, poking around until he found your entrance. You inhaled sharply as he inched inside. Your walls clenched around him as he sank into. You were taken off your feet as he rammed into you entirely. You cried out and slapped the hood.

“Ow, stop, stop.” You exclaimed.

His hand left your neck as he grabbed your hips instead. He slammed you into the truck as he thrust into you harshly. You lifted your head as your back arched. Your toes fought to find traction on the ground as you whimpered and reached to try to pull yourself away from him. He easily rocked you back into him as he rutted into you.

Your nerves buzzed as he fucked you harder, the hem of his shirt brushed against your ass each time. You panted as the heat gathered along your spine and stormed through your core. You were so close and the thought repulsed you. Your disgust quickly flitted away as his grunts permeated the air around you.

Your eyes rolled back and you dropped your head back to the hood. You smothered your moans in your arm but your body betrayed you with a violent spasm. You came and he barely seemed to notice as he sped up. 

He bent over you and pushed your legs together. Your walls grew even snugger around him and he groaned. He swore as he twitched and pulled out of you suddenly. He tugged on your jeans as he climaxed in a series of primal snarls. He released you and his shoes scraped against the stonework. He sighed over the metallic zip and you found your feet below you.

You turned, slowly. You looked down at your jeans, rolled below your thighs. Your panties were shiny with his cum as you stared at them dumbly. Your legs shook as your stomach turned.

“Pull those up, flower girl,” Ransom sneered. “It’s not professional to walk around with your ass out.”

     The winter waned in a sloppy miserable way, kicking out with a few snowstorms like the flailing of a dying animal. Despite not really being bothered by the cold, D.N. practically hibernated, most often found in a window seat in the library, going through Rowan’s Mother’s books and being snarky about bad information about fairies. Rowan was fairly sure it was just a way to safely lash out. She dug out an old laptop and gave him access to the Netflix account. If nothing else it kept him distracted. Something Rowan had learned was that the fair folk did, as legend said, love stories. 

And apparently, soap operas and romcoms.

Like herself, Remus seemed out of sorts in the late winter, though more in the way of someone who had woken up long before they wanted to. He’d gone into the woods and returned dressed in his more normal attire, also having brought back a few changes of clothing that was closer to D.N.’s size, and of a finer make than anything in the Baker house, despite Rowan’s sister’s cautious attempt to find a fabric the fae child would like. For the most part, the rest of Rowan’s family treated D.N. with cautious courtesy, and a certain level of ‘not be alone in a room with him’. Remus, by contrast, was treated more as a benign nuisance, though not without kindness.  Frankly, that was more understandable than Rowan’s blase attitude. That didn’t stop a certain level of speculation as to why ‘Leif’ and his friend were staying with them.

     “I’ve figured it out!” 

Rowan balled a pair of socks and tossed it in her sister’s basket across the table. They were sorting the laundry by owner, and Rowan had made it her mission to find as many pairs of socks as she could. 

“Figured what out?” 

“What’s going on with Leif and the kid!” 

“Have you now?” Rowan said dryly and a little nervously. Her sister nodded. 

“It’s pretty obvious if you think about it. The kid is the spawn of the last fairy king.”

“What.” 

“Look, it’s obvious that Leif served him, right? And we know he’s dead. So then Leif disappears for months and reappears with a kid? With scales? We know that Leif’s traveled outside Wickhills before- so clearly he knew where the kid was, maybe he was even the one who took him away, probably more of a Cronos eating his kids thing than a Arthur sent into hiding thing, and now he brought him back.” She pursed her lips. “You know, I bet Leif can change genders like a frog.”

Rowan started laughing. 

“Leif might even be the mother-” she went on. 

“Definitely not.” Rowan choked. 

“But he is related. I’ve connected the dots.” she said smugly.

“You haven’t connected shit.” Rowan retorted throwing a pair of pants at her.

“I’ve connected them.”

     As spring burgeoned forth, Remus agitated with the need to leave the house. It was clear he wasn’t used to staying in one place, even for a few weeks like this. Rowan could always tell when Remus had gone wandering in the night, because D.N. didn’t come down from the attic until he’d come back. It wasn’t as if D.N. was avoiding his so-called hosts, so much as he was totally avoiding the humans in the house as much as possible as if by pretending they weren’t there he could pretend none of this was happening. 

When spring officially arrived Rowan made them clothing, a shirt of heavy green broadcloth for Remus, and a more delicate shirt of the finest white linen she had for D.N. The shirt he generally wore was made of undyed silk, and Rowan feared that the substance had come from the shroud- or rather bag- she’d sewn for the bones of the Serpent King. It was tricky to give them, as D.N. certainly wanted no gifts from her, and Remus wanted to gift her in return. But it was simply tradition, that for the first day of spring everyone had a new garment. So her green brother and erstwhile guest needed something new too, for luck. Honestly, Rowan thought he could probably use all the luck he could get.

     It was a fine warm day in mid April, when leaves were finally starting to show, and only the most stubborn bits of snow were sticking around in the darkest shadows, when Rowan was working in her garden.

“Little tree! You’re wearing pants!” 

The whippy rose vine Rowan had been arguing with slipped out of her hand as the twist tie sprang from her other, and she took the momentary break to glare at Remus, who had appeared in her personal bubble with no warning whatsoever.

“I wear pants all the time.” she retorted, giving him a half hearted shove. 

“Yeah, but usually you have dresses over ‘em.” theatrically, he collapsed to the scrubby grass outside the garden and sprawled in the sun. 

“Well, I learned that arguing with rose bushes in a dress doesn’t end well for the dress.” She grabbed hold again with her gloved hand, and pulled a fresh tie out of her apron pocket, lashing the thorny vine to the wrought iron trellis that kept most fae out of her garden. They could, in theory, pass under the iron arbor that faced the wood, wreathed as it was in plants, but until Remus it hadn’t been much of a problem. “How are you doing?” she asked quietly. He was looking better. He’d been kind of wan, a sickly sort of green rather than his normal healthy hue like a ripening acorn. 

“Starting to feel my oats.” He responded, tipping his face into the sun. “It’s a good spring. I’d say that spring was happy about something.” in the distance, a door opened and closed.

“Seasons do seem to have emotions.” She agreed, and had to step delicately over him to get to the next bush, pulling clippers from her pocket and studying the bush thoughtfully, before pruning a few branches, and returning to tucking them in safely so they wouldn’t grab passers by too badly.  That done she carried the trimmed branches away. D.N. emerged from the widdershins side of the house, having exited the front door and walked so he didn’t have to pass the rowan tree, even if he could do so under the protection of the porch. He glared down at Remus with frustration. 

“What are you doing?” he demanded.

“Having a kip?” Remus suggested, as Rowan stepped over him again to get back to the rose bushes. 

“You should tell me as soon as you come back from the forest.” he said grouchily, not making eye contact. 

“Well, not much is going on, so there’s nothing to tell you.” Remus shrugged. 

“That’s good right?” Rowan asked. 

“A secret unsaid is a secret kept.” D.N. muttered, not addressing Rowan at all. “What are you doing out there anyway?” 

“Favors.” Remus sighed. “So many favors. I’m not exactly a favorite right now. People don’t want me to do favors for them, but I need the currency. Also fixing up my house.” he rubbed his hands over his face. “It’s kind of out of the way, so it might be safe enough. It’s nice enough to visit with my little tree, but…”

“We can’t stay here forever.” D.N. agreed. “It buzzes.” 

“Yeah.” Remus nodded. “So I’ve got some improvements to make, and gotta reassert my territory. No one got near the tree, but I don’t have much around it.” he clicked his tongue “Fun and all, but I’m in a hurry.”  he made a kissy face at them both. “But I’ll always hurry back to you.” 

Rowan snorted, and D.N. rolled his eyes. He crossed his arms and cocked his hip, glaring down at the green-clad fae. 

“I’m sure whatever you stay in is better than this.”

“Hey, owch. It’s a good house. We finally got the roof fixed last year.” Rowan glared, waving her clippers at him. D.N. leaned away. 

“Well it’s hardly the hovel I’ve seen other witches live in,” he sneered at the Victorian style house. “But it isn’t anywhere I would choose to stay.” 

“Sorry for not being a magical house.”

“Oh it’s full of magic alright. Human magic, thick and inelegant, like mud on the bottom of a pond.”

“I like mud.” Remus commented, popping up and bracing himself upright on his hands. Rowan noticed that his knuckles were reddened and split. Putting her clippers away again, she dug into her other pocket, coming up with a small, shallow clay pot, closed with a wide cork. She crouched down and grabbed one hand, dabbing the ointment onto the wounds. Remus obligingly offered his other hand when she was done. 

“Why was this in your pocket?”

“It’s better to get the ointment on big jabs right away, and I’m doing lawn work.” she shrugged, and went back to her work. 

After a while, Rowan finished her discussion with the rosebushes, and headed back inside without saying anything. Shortly after that, a car drove up hidden by the bulk of the house. Another short while later, it drove away again. Rowan returned to her garden, hooking her apron over her head again.

“Bloody busy-body is what she is.” Rowan grumbled to herself. “No need to come by every time, her tea hasn’t changed in over a year, if I wanted everyone coming by and bothering me all the time I’d start up a tea room in town and read palms and cards. It’s what I get for being helpful and offering to do a unique blend.” 

“Can you tell the future?” Remus asked, popping up on the other side of the hedge wall of rose bushes, making Rowan yelp and clutch her rake. 

“Like the weather.” She retorted. “Which is to say, not really worth anything.” 

“You’re a useless kind of witch, aren’t you?” sniffed D.N. who had taken up a seat in an Adirondack style chair they had acquired somewhere, and everyone in the Baker family hated, which is why it wasn’t on the porch.

“Yeah, kind of.” she didn’t rise to the bait, and watched him stare at the woods. “You could go, you know.”

“What?”

“Nothing’s keeping you here if you wanted to leave.”

“Little tree-” Remus said, sounding hurt. 

“Not you, you’re welcome any time. And for that matter, if he wants to go for a bit and come back, that’s fine.”

“I can’t actually. I have to ‘stay here’ until further notice.” 

“Oh right. Fairy parole officer.” Rowan sighed. “Well you could probably get as far as the property line, or where our ‘official’ lot meets up with the woods.”

“It isn’t as if I’m desperate to wander in the woodlands, Witch, I just don’t want to be here. At all.”

“Boy, do I hear that.”  she sighed deeply, pausing to look into the woods herself. The small leaves were misting the tips of the trees with color, and there was a smell of wet and rot in the air. It looked like a storm was building in the west.  It would probably hit the before nightfall, gathering the dark in the clouds and making the night come that much faster in the growing spring day. Better to get her gardening done before it hit, so she’d only have to repair the damage it did, not do that and the maintenance. The plants were being especially springy this year, and she was tempted to put this down to Remus’s presence. 

D.N. continued to watch her, as though she was some sort of reality TV show, while Remus sprawled in the scrubby grass next to his chair. 

When the first cold wet gust hit, all three of them headed inside.

     The storm was really having fun, so they were in Rowan’s room instead of the loft. Remus liked to hang out with both of them, so Rowan coming to work on whatever she was doing -some sort of project involving embroidery floss at the moment- and sit with Remus while Remus would root through her work basket, or bring out a pouch and do something himself- embroidery, or sharpening knives, occasionally woodcarving. Sometimes he’d sit behind Rowan and brush or play with her hair, braiding it into elaborate arrangements that she’d have to ask for help to undo.

Sometimes Danger Noodle would use Remus as a cushion or a backrest as if he was staking his claim. That night however, he’d pulled the beat up floral armchair Rowan kept next to one of her windows to a different window (further away from the dancing limbs of the rowan tree) and settled down with a book.

Rowan noticed that he would raise his hand and rub the back of his neck occasionally as if it were hurting. She nudged Remus’s leg and inclined her head at D.N. He shrugged.

“Are you in pain somehow?” Rowan asked, startling him into dropping his book.

“Kindly mind your own business.” Danger Noodle sneered. 

“Are you cold?” Remus asked. “You do-” he rubbed the back of his neck “lots.” 

D.N. growled under his breath, picking the book up. 

“It isn’t important.” He told them. 

“But it is a thing.”

“You never used to.”

He sighed, explosively. “Are you two going to leave me alone about this?”

“Well now I’m curious.” Rowan admitted tipping her head with a smile on her face that reminded D.N. far too much of Remus’s mischievous expression. If it weren’t for her obvious humanity, he would think they were siblings. “If you’re cold, I could get you a blanket, is all.” 

“I’m not cold.” he rolled his eyes. “I’m a winter.”

She looked unimpressed. “So what’s with the lounging in sunbeams?” 

Danger Noodle sneered at her, scales glinting in the lamplight. 

“It's just a feeling.  It’s like a cold hand on the back of my neck, it’s not squeezing but it’s there.” D.N. spread his fingers over the back of his neck.  “Like something’s watching me, constantly.” 

“Huh.” Remus and Rowan said in unison, heads tipping to the side. Danger Noodle glared, there was no way they weren’t doing that on purpose. 

“Might be something?” Remus asked thoughtfully, looking at the corners of the room. 

“I’d want to keep an eye on him, if it were me.” Rowan admitted. 

D.N. sighed again, exasperated, then Remus perked up digging in one of the many pockets inside his vest.  After a search he came up with a bag, tied firmly shut with cord. He climbed off the bed and went to kneel next to the armchair instead. 

“I made this for you.” Remus opened the intricately tied knot, and from inside the bag, produced a scarf. It looked like heavy silk of some sort, dyed a beautiful saffron yellow, covered in single-thread embroidery. Vines twisted and twined along it, with a snake hidden among them.  D.N. stared at it for a long moment, then recoiled. 

“Are you out of your mind? Wait, never mind I retract the question.” 

“I made it for you a while ago but…” Remus admitted. “You wouldn’t have taken it.”

“I’m not taking it now.” He stood up, tossing the book on the chair. “What makes you think I would even want it?” 

“You’re not as strong now-” 

Danger Noodle hissed, flashing sharp teeth, pupils narrow. 

“-so I’m going to protect you until you’re stronger.” Remus finished as if  he hadn’t just been threatened. 

“I am still stronger than you.” the young fae said disdainfully, drawing himself up to his full, unimpressive height.

“Are you though?” Rowan asked, setting her project down and watching them. 

“I am certainly more powerful than you.” 

“Oh, that’s not even a question.” 

“So what this looks like is Remus is offering you his favor to wear, showing that you’re his...  I’m going to say ‘ward’, because you’re a kid.”

“I am not a kid!” D.N. retorted, stamping his foot like a child. 

“And therefore under his protection. Displaying a connection.” 

“It’s a little more complicated than that, but yeah.” Remus agreed. 

“Which is why I’m not interested.” 

“I don’t have to give you an oath to give you my favor.” Remus pointed out, he just stared up at Danger Noodle entreatingly.  The room was silent except for the storm outside, and the faint sound of someone watching a movie elsewhere in the house. D.N. rubbed the back of his neck again, and Rowan shivered, like a gust of cold air had made it through the window. Her eyes shut and she saw dead branches against a milky sky. Blinking the vision away, she got to see D.N. throw his hands in the air. 

“Uugh enough with the eyes. Fine. I’ll take it, but it doesn’t mean anything.” He accepted the scarf and looped it around his neck, spreading the folds upward to the base of his hair. 

“It means you’re wearing something I made you.” Remus pointed out and rose up, gathering Danger Noodle into a hug, to which he submitted, to Rowan’s surprise. “Which makes me happy.” 

“Mmgnh. Fuck off.” D.N. mumbled, face pressed to Remus’s bicep. 

Rowan decided not to comment on how cute it was.

Some European agricultural systems

Jamón ibérico is the world's most expensive meat- running a heafty price of up to 5k for a leg. While the breed of pig is important, what makes the meat so delicious is it's diet; their last feeding is almost exclusively acorns. It wasn't uncommon for people in Europe to gather sweet acorns for themselves (usually for bread, like pan'ispeli), and feed the bitter acorns to their pigs. Cork trees are the preferred oak, because their bark can be harvested to make cork products (namely cork tops for wine bottles).

Vite maritata requires frequent pruning of trees, which is why stakes are often prefered to this ancient method. However, I think the use of tropical deciduous trees (aka, trees that drop their leaves during the hot/ dry seasons) would work well in this kind of system. Along with giving the grapes adequate sun exposure, the dropped leaves would protect the ground from excessive heat.

Odds Short Stacked Against

So, this was my very first commission!! for a user who wishes to remain anonymous.

The commission was for a short stack story about their OC named Gabe who’s a non-binary living doll. It was fun writing NB weight gain (and something I’ll do some for considering I need to write something for best NB Chinese emperor from fgo)

The commissioner asked for the work to be based off of another commission they got.

Grumbling, Gabe slams their door close as they trudge back inside. Usually pristine clothes are instead tattered, holes and scratches littering their light pink shirt and teal shorts. Orange hair in a ponytail when they left the house, the style had come undone earlier from running for their life. Closing their eyes, they inhale deeply through their nose before breathing out of their mouth. Shoulders relaxed, Gabe immediately tenses up as they reach for the wooden charm placed at their hip. Yanking it off, the fabric keeping it tied tears, Gabe throwing it to the floor. They bare their teeth as they smile down at it, their right foot pressing firmly down on it. Crunching it under their heel, the wood audibly splinters apart. The awful purchase better off broken, Gabe dusts their hands with the deed done. Taking a confident step with their left, the broken wood offers the perfect opportunity for them to lose their balance, Gabe groaning as their ass hits the floor.

“Damn thing,” Teeth clenched, Gabe lets out a sigh. Dismissing the charm with their hand, they drag their feet. Worn out, they pay zero attention as they grab a broom. Sweeping the broken chunks of wood, Gabe discards them in the trash can. The charm’s parting gift revealed, Gabe stubs their right foot as they turn around.

“Ughhh!” Broom tossed against the wall before it ultimately clunks to the floor, Gabe stomps their foot. Their right foot. Pain still tender from stubbing it, Gabe purses their lips. Mentally counting to ten, Gabe adds another ten numbers. At twenty, they count to fifty instead. Unpursing their lips with a sigh, they push their matted bangs out of their face. Visibly recoiling from the gross foreign texture, the day’s grime becomes apparent.

Deciding a break to be the best course of action, they take a seat on a chair. A wooden one, dirtying a perfectly pretty chair on their already awful day would serve only to upset them even more. Hands on their bony thighs, they stretch out their legs. Leaning forward, their spine thanks them, the stretch appreciated by the sound of the resulting cracks. Sitting straight, they stretch their left arm, placing it behind their head before doing the same with their right.

“Okay,” Gabe mutters to themself. “I at least destroyed that stupid fake good luck charm,” Crossing their arms, they puff out their chest from the meager accomplishment.

Starting the day with a whim, a usual occurrence when it came to Gabe, they had decided upon waking up to visit Victor’s store. Victor an alchemist, Gabe’s intended window shopping quickly turned into real shopping once Victor had captivated them with his simple magic tricks. A puff of smoke popping up from mixing two round-bottom flasks, vibrant liquids bubbling despite a lack of heat, strange insignias never before seen, foreign body parts from even more foreign animals, they had all enticed Gabe. Yet Victor’s relaxed disposition had been the enticing nail in the coffin. Calm level voice hiding all sense of achievement and prowess, the nonchalant behavior as Victor confidently explained each item Gabe pointed to only added to Victor’s cool charm.  An alarming amount of said items allegedly dangerous when congested, Gabe’s proud proclamation of being a living doll only earned a simple raise of his brow from Victor.

The most fascinating of all was a small wooden carving of a Lily of the Valley, Gabe finding the small trinket adorable. Small runes carved into the back, the curves yet rigidity behind said runes had enchanted Gabe, the item already a certain purchase to them. Victor’s offered explanation of the item served their purpose, Gabe not bothering to haggle Victor upon the price, a serious overcharge. The item a good luck charm, Victor told Gabe of its mysterious properties, the item not offering a specific branch of good luck, but instead offering varying good luck depending on the day. Gabe a lover of the unexpected and brand new, an effective roulette of good luck seemed like the best invention ever.

Gabe’s pocket lighter than it was in the morning, Victor’s had ended heavier, Victor smiling to himself at the good luck being offered to all but the charm’s wearer.

No further than twenty feet away after their purchase, Gabe had the misfortune of stepping in mud, their shoes ruined. Growling sounding behind him, a wild dog had promptly chased after Gabe. Lithe figure adept in physical activities, not getting mauled further motivated him to run. Rushing through branches and shrubbery, their long silky hair kept getting snagged. Wasting time to unsnag it left them with the sole viable option of climbing a tree. Forced to wait an hour for the dog to leave, their slow trek back home ended with Gabe realizing they dropped their keys. Backtracking to find them taking an extra hour, the day was a horrid experience.

The charm obviously a fake, that led to Gabe’s current situation; tired and stewing in anger. Hauling themselves out of their chair, the chair left out, Gabe goes to complete their first objective, the act necessary to them.

A nice hot steaming shower.

Plush towel ready, they quickly discard their current scraps for clothing and toss them to the floor, the clothes too unsalvageable to even be placed in the hamper. Warm water ready, the fresh cleansing cascades down Gabe, Gabe leaning towards it. Standing still, they remain still for a couple of minutes, the rushing water hitting the floor the only sound. Having enough, Gabe reaches for the shampoo. Gently lathering their hair, they scrub their body of the day’s sweat and grime. The gross coating washing away, Gabe takes their time, the reminders of today disappearing. The last remnants gone, they step out of the tub. Clogging the drain, they wrap their towel as they rummage around. Bottles of varying scents and fragrances, Gabe pushes each one out of the way. Face lighting up, they snatch the bottles in the back.

Reserved for more trying times, Gabe generously pours epsom salt and lavender into the bath as it fills. The chilly air nipping at their wet skin, they dip a finger into the warm waiting bath, contentedly swirling the water as they bob their head. The tub generously full, they turn off the faucet. They place their towel on the counter. Stepping in, they slowly bring themselves down. Gabe sighs, their neck below submerged. Crossing their arms, they shuffle a bit, the water sloshing around them.

Sinking in, the cool porcelain tub barely feels there, their tub spacious. Eyes closed, they hum, their tired state aiding in appreciating the tepid water and the sweet subtle scent, the room also completely silent. Relaxing further, their shoulders sag, weight let go; their breath evening out, Gabe’s mind begins to wander as they drift asleep.

Cool air nipping at them, their revealing crop top leaves them bare to the chill of the night; Gabe rubs their arm as they survey the room. Wooden shelves, wooden floors, wooden desks, everything in the room is wooden with the exception of the corked bottles of various liquids housed inside. Some containing labels with descriptions, others contain labels with a single word while the rest offer no such thing, the container completely barren. No potion the exact same hue, the collection entrances Gabe as they reach for the nearest one. A puff of gray smoke appearing in front of them, Gabe recoils as Victor appears. Shorter than Gabe, his scowl still sends shivers down Gabe’s spine, Gabe keeping their hand to their chest. Swallowing the lump in their throat, Gabe shoves Victor to the side, a small “oof’ let out as his bum hits the floor. Uncorking the violet potion, Gabe shoves it in the disoriented Victor’s mouth. Grabbing the thrashing Victor’s arms, Gabe keeps him in place as the liquid drains down his throat. Grinning and laughing, Gabe smirks down at Victor as he lets out a small burp, Victor’s face flushed as he lets out a moan.

Gabe’s laugh slowly dies down as Victor suddenly appears closer to them. Victor still sitting on the floor, Gabe takes slow steps back as Victor rises. Victor standing up, his thigh reaches Gabe’s head; he leans down as he grins maniacally at Gabe. Another step taken, Gabe’s back hits the wall as their brain hits the unfortunate conclusion of being trapped with a giant Victor. Victor’s head reaching the ceiling, the wood splinters off as he outgrows that as well. Gabe gulping, clouds thunder above as a streak of lightning strikes somewhere off in the distance. Rain suddenly pouring, the water pools up to their shins, Gabe flailing as the water continues to rise. Shivering, the cold water soon reaches their chest, Gabe’s hair flat and sticky against their neck and back. The water quickly reaching their mouth, Gabe finds themself not rising with the water level. Spreading their arms, their attempts at swimming to the surface leave them stuck at the bottom, the water continuing to rise as they remain at the bottom. Choking, more water forces its way down their throat, Gabe’s eyes closing as the last of the air in their body escapes in bubbles.

Water falling out and hitting the floor, Gabe clenches the sides of the tub, water spat out of their mouth as they cough. Throat uncomfortable after several painful coughs, Gabe heaves, hands caressing their neck. Sharply turning their head, Gabe relaxes back into their tub as they realize they’re still in their bathroom. Turning their arm as they inspect it, skin barely beginning to prune from being submerged for so long prompts Gabe to uncork the tub, the water draining down as Gabe dries themself off. Furiously scrubbing their skin with the soft plush towel, Gabe storms off to their room. Opening the closet, Gabe cowers and ducks as an army of moths fly out and head for the window, all of them leaving. Raiding their own drawers, several of their clothes appear torn with holes. Blaming almost drowning and now this to the stupid charm, Gabe tosses and discards the fabric in their search for something wearable. Coming up with only one option, Gabe glowers at the innocent fabric. The outfit actually appealing to Gabe, the wardrobe doesn’t scream espionage to them. Sucking it up, they hurriedly dress themself.

Inspecting themself, they grin at being ready for some proper revenge. Perhaps with such a getup, Victor will feel even more stupid for getting what he deserves. A cyan button up crop top, the top is one of Gabe’s favorites. The four buttons each a suit of a deck, the little detail had caught their attention. The crop top also going up to their neck, the upper portion is composed of purple to help break up the solid one note collar, the purple and cyan broken up by a black line. The top form-fitting, the fabric neither wrinkles nor compresses their body, Gabe’s petite chest finely caressed in the fabric as his bare lithe stomach is shown for all to see. Low cut purple shorts on, the end of the fabric barely reaches past the underside of their ass, the fabric perfectly encircling the defined yet not overly filled cheeks. A garter belt underneath that, the black fabric holds up their tights; the tights filled with black and white diamonds, the very top of the tights lined with pink frills. Their hair styled, Gabe had gone with a less free look, putting their hair into double buns, the rest of their hair framing the sides of their face. Grinning to themself, they race out of their door, the crescent moon offering the perfect blend of cover and light. The cursed charm still on their mind, Gabe carefully watched their steps for anything that appears suspicious. Gabe eventually navigates back to Victor’s house with nothing but their own memory to guide them.

Walking around the perimeter, no light is visible, the sole inhabitant seemingly away or asleep. Back at the front, the first trial appears. A locked door. Gabe smiles as they pick the lock with ease, numerous escapades similar to this making them an expert when it comes to snooping. Carefully opening the door, they lift it up to ensure it doesn’t creak. Peaking, the living area is barren of Victor or any real sign of inhabitants really, only a few of victor’s materials lining the table. Gently closing the door, Gabe rubs their hands with a wide grin. Padding across the floor, they constantly turn their head to and fro, on the lookout for anything out of the ordinary. Nothing turning up, they slither against the walls as they make their way into the hallway. A few doors lining the hallway, light snoring comes from their right. Hunched over, they tiptoe towards the source. Door open, Victor lies in the bed, his black hair splayed out as he sleeps. Forcing themself to not approach Victor and giving him a nice throttle, Gabe turns on their heel, carefully marching down the hallway. Coast clear, they peak their head into the other doors, pursing their lips as they come across mundane rooms such as a closet and a guest bedroom. The very last door at the opposite end of the hallway, Gabe slowly opens it, taking a glance inside. The goldmine found, Gabe holds back their snicker, hands thrown wildly in the air. Their brow furrows as the room appears near identical to their little dream turned nightmare. Potions once again a myriad of colors not used to seeing, each different in some aspect, Gabe hesitantly reaches out for the nearest potion once more. The potion the exact shade of vibrant violet as their dream, Gabe recalls the effect. Victor turning into a giant from the potion in their dream, Gabe shudders, imagining the real consequences of angering a giant alchemist. Scanning the other potions, Gabe lightly taps their right foot on the floor, the expansive options before them daunting. Hand on their hip, the potion, still in their hand, resting on their hip catches their attention. Idea forming, Gabe kisses the bottle.

If it turned Victor into a giant, then it should turn them into a giant as well! Patting themself on the back, Gabe uncorks the potion, swirling the contents in the flask. Ignoring any notion of strangeness from somehow perfectly envisioning Victor’s hoard of potions in their dream, Gabe chugs the potion. Surprisingly sweet, yet not overwhelmingly so, the watery liquid goes down smoothly, Gabe smacking their lips at the end. Burping, they blush as they bring a hand to their mouth. The flask let go of, it thunks against the floor, glassware absolutely fine.

Warmth filling the pit of their flat stomach, Gabe happily stares at the floor, expectantly waiting for it to appear more distant. Instead, they gasp as it feels closer. Neck uncomfortably rubbing against something, they bring their hands to their chest. Soft plush skin met, they pull back. Slowly bringing their hands back, the task a tad bit harder than it should be, the sensation remains the same. Two sizeable mounds for breasts fitting in their hands, Gabe gulps. Eyes widening, Gabe feels the heavy weight of their breasts increasing, their arms faltering. Their crop top filling out with breast, Gabe grimaces as the fabric cuts into their skin, the growing rolls of fat seeming more in number with more divots. The fabric slowly spreads apart where it buttons up, more of their fair skin becoming exposed. Their arms thickening slightly, the added adipose hanging off is insignificant to the jugs they sport. Chest welling up, the inner portions of flesh begin to press against each other, Gabe’s back straining to keep a straight posture. Slightly hunched over, Gabe huffs. Glancing down, they let out a whimper, their eyes making contact with only their billowing breasts as they continue to grow out further. Buttons digging into them, Gabe lets out a gasp as the cool air hits their nipples, the expansive areola now free from the crop top as their breasts splay out the side. Hands clinging to their breasts, Gabe’s fingers sink into them; their arms quiver under the crushing weight, their breasts surpassing the size of their head.

Too concerned over the heavy growth of their breasts, Gabe’s mind forgets about the rest of their body. Fingers widening a bit, the slim digits appear fatter, more akin to sausages. Their flat stomach also slowly fills out with fat, a small sliver of pudge protruding. The bit of pudge grows to a small overhang, the effect barely discernible with Gabe’s breasts sagging low enough to cover their stomach. Gabe’s thighs experience the second greatest effect of the potion, the deft flexible limbs widening and thickening. Bits of flab folding on itself and creating divots, the colossal thighs rub up against each other, Gabe unwittingly widening their stance every couple of seconds only for the extra space to be occupied soon after. Gabe’s shorts stretch to accommodate the needed room, the waistband utterly digging into them. Shorts rising up, the clinging fabric exposes more of Gabe’s meaty thighs, accentuating their size. Their fat pad presses against the front of their shorts, the bump noticeable. Gabe’s ass also growing, the once flat butt fills out as they also strain their shorts. Already having been slightly exposed, the lower portions of flab sag down as the shorts cut into them, Gabe’s ass also exposed at the top. Their shorts are akin to a headband for their ass, the middle portion of fat squeezed tight as the upper and lower portions ooze out.

As Gabe’s growth continues, they also begin to shrink. An impressive 6’2 unfitting for Gabe’s impish nature, their height diminishes, limbs contracting and shortening. Shrinking inch by inch, their overall area decreases, Gabe’s newfound weight becoming more compact and wider in return. Reaching a decent 5’7, Gabe’s height declines further, every piece of furniture becoming comically sized for Gabe. Shrunken more than a whole foot at an even five feet tall, Gabe’s proportions seem comical, their billowing fat overtaking their short frame. Shrinking down further, Gabe soon becomes nearly the same width as they are tall. Their breasts spread out wider than that, all of Gabe is overwhelmingly large at their new miniature four-foot stature.

Heavily breathing, Gabe’s breaths come out strained. Leaning over, their oversized breasts sag; Gabe digs their heels into the ground to avoid toppling over. Concentrating, Gabe struggles to stand up straight, Gabe groaning and panting to do so. Arms buckling, they take a tentative step forward.

Nearly falling again, their thighs chafing where a thigh gap once was, Gabe looks down. Unable to see anything but their breasts, they sigh. Unable to see, but able to feel, their thighs squish against each other. Ass offering somewhat of a counterweight, the amount is negligible to their breasts, Gabe desperately trying to push them up with their arms.

Looking up, Gabe groans as they realize their other predicament. Incredibly short, even the doorway feels far taller than it should. Looking behind them, the shelves lining the room feel impossibly tall, the task of grabbing them alone at this height difficult, with jugs the size of theirs, it feels downright impossible.  Warmth bubbling again, Gabe closes their eyes, whimpering. Bracing for another growth, the warm sensation travels up their body.

Instead, they let out another burp; Gabe unable to control the volume, it lasts for a couple seconds, Gabe positively red.

“So that’s what that potion does,” Victor thinks to himself as he stands in the doorway, his loud intruder having woken him up. Having to look up at Gabe this morning, Victor instead strains his neck to look down, Gabe’s head barely coming up to his chest. Examining Gabe, Victor keeps a straight face as Gabe appears more tits and thighs than anything, their tiny exaggerated hefty frame and hourglass figure hidden by their recent growth and pudge.

A shadow over them, Gabe trembles. Eyes wide, they look up. Caught in the act, they stumble to make a getaway. Thick thighs chafing, Gabe widely swings one to take a step. A hand on their shoulder, Gabe lets out an oof, wheezing.  Glaring at Victor, Gabe lets out a shriek as he pushes them back, Gabe’s hefty rump softening the impact. Their eyes widen as the floor noticeably shakes.

His captor distracted, Gabe forces themself to stand. Breasts in the way, they press down into their thighs. Unable to stand up normally, Gabe places a hand on the floor. Jiggling back and forth for momentum, their body shakes, rolls of fat hitting against each other. A hand placed on their shoulder again, Gabe pauses. Victor looming over them, Victor has to kneel to even place a hand on their shoulder. He has another potion in hand.

Flipping the page, Victor titles it potion # 2, uncorking the bottle.

Gabe shifting uncomfortably, their massive mammaries wobble back and forth, slapping their gelatin-like thighs. Their shorts shift around their ass, loosening and tightening. Their awful luck from the charm catching up to them still, Gabe whimpers as the second bottle gets placed against their lips, Victor ready to write the effects for the first experiment of many.

Tree Bark Facts, Problems, and Solutions

What Is Tree Bark

Often referred to as the “skin of a tree,” tree bark, when you look just below the surface, you’ll see a layer of living tissue. This tissue is like a bundle of straws packed together, serving as conductive ‘pipes’ for transporting fluids. This tissue comes in two principal forms.

The first layer is the phloem. Phloem is right below the surface bark throughout the tree and carries sugars from the leaves to the rest of the tree. Deeper in is a layer called the xylem or sapwood. These tubes carry water, nutrients, and minerals the opposite way to the leaves.

Found between these layers is the cambium. The cambium produces cells. On the inside, it creates more xylem, and on the outside, it creates more phloem.

Xylem cells die quickly. This is necessary for them to play their role as pipes. They eventually become blocked and are replaced by newer xylem. This process surrounds the old layer, which is why a tree’s girth expands each year (adding to the number of growth rings). The blocked tubes become the heartwood of the tree. Heartwood gives the tree strength and is efficient at resisting disease and insect attack.

As phloem dies, it is pressed outward and becomes part of the bark. Many tree species have a cork cambium layer outside the first one. Its job is to produce cork, which also forms a significant portion of bark.

In short, everything outside the main cambium layer is considered the bark.

What Does Tree Bark Do?

Bark minimizes water loss from the trunk, branches, and stems, deters insect and fungal attack, and is a very effective shield against fire damage, as demonstrated by the incredible fire resistance of redwood and giant sequoia trees, which have massive bark.

The cork cambium provides a highly efficient barrier against many types and species of invaders. Being so resilient, it also isolates the outer secondary phloem and tissues from the rest of the wood, ultimately killing it. Thus, the outer bark is composed entirely of dead tissue.

Tree Bark Damage

Trees are subject to multiple types of injury that are usually unintentional, like automobiles, construction equipment, lawnmowers wounding the tree trunk or surface roots, or improper pruning. Naturally occurring events, like storms, fires, or damage by wildlife grazing/nesting may also cause severe wounds.

Wounds that severely damage and penetrate the bark damage the cambium layer (the thin layer of vascular tissue vital to water and nutrient movement). Such wounds expose the tree to successful insect infestation and disease attacks.

If less than 25% of the bark around the trunk has been damaged, the tree will likely recover. When such trunk wounds occur, any injured or detached bark should be carefully removed, leaving healthy bark that is firm and tight to the wood.

Through a process called compartmentalization, a wounded tree will attempt to save itself by sealing off damaged areas.

Note: Wound dressings (tree paint) are not necessary. In fact, You can observe the wound(s) closing from the edges inward each year - as the tree grows.

Tip: Storm-damaged branches should be correctly and immediately pruned away from the tree to expedite the healing process. Avoid pruning directly against or flush to the trunk since these cuts can result in extensive decay.

Tree Bark Protection

Damage prevention is far more effective and less costly than attempts at repairing the damage. You can protect a tree from equipment and mechanical injury by planting ground-cover plants or by spreading mulch around the tree. This protection method keeps a lawnmower and trimmer far from the tree's trunk.

Another element of tree bark damage occurs in the winter with sunscald. Light-colored tree wraps reflect sunlight and help prevent sunscald injury by keeping bark temperatures lower. The wraps should be in place by late fall and must be removed in early spring after the potential of hard frost has passed.
