Lunchtime - Matsuda x Reader (gender neutral)

synopsis_ after matsuda has a rough day, you try your best to comfort him during a lunch together

note_ this is the first fanfic i've written so yeah, i know it's really, really bad. but i love matsuda soo :)

Quickly going through your notes, you make sure to double-check all the names. Despite it being tedious work, you were interested in the new turns this case was bringing. Just a few months ago you joined as a member of the task force, looking to find and put an end to Kira, and now you were investigating the renowned insurance company, Yotsuba Cooperation.

Standing up, you made your way towards L, carrying the sizable stack of papers in your hands.

“Ryuzaki, Here's a list of domestic employees in the Yotsuba Group.”

“Thank you very much”, L said as you handed it to him. He started looking through the papers, and you being unsure of what to do next, awkwardly stood there watching him. While doing so, you felt someone's gaze fixed on you. Looking up, you saw who it was. Matsuda.

You smiled at him, and he smiled back.

Despite trying to keep up your enthusiasm, you couldn’t lie, this was all really draining on you. It had only been a handful of people in the police force who joined the Kira investigation, and your decision to do so didn’t come without its consequences. In the past few days, ever since your parents found out about the ultimatum given by the police force, they've been calling you nonstop and pressuring you to leave the investigation behind, saying that it wasn't worth losing your job over. At times, you agreed with them. All this pressure and putting your life at risk... made you wonder if your contributions to the team even made it worth the cost.

But Matsuda... made things a bit better. He was the only person in the task force you felt like you could really talk to. Everyone else was too serious, understandably so, but it didn’t help put your mind at ease.

For the past few weeks, you and Matsuda have been eating lunch together, discussing just about anything. Talking about the investigation, your otherwise somewhat mundane lives, your futures, and other things you found interesting. Whether that be senseless conspiracy theories on Kira or about how you thought L was leading the case.

You found a lot of comfort in these lunchtimes together. It was much more than just a lunch with a friendly colleague. It was a bit of normalcy and positivity in your otherwise gloomy and stressful life. And it wasn't just the upbeat conversations that helped. Whenever the feeling of worthlessness started to grow on you, when you felt like you might be nothing more than dead weight to the task force, he would hurriedly try to convince you otherwise, with one of his hands covering his mouth, still stuffed with food, leading to more than one occasion of him choking.

Now, as you were smiling at him, you recognized what he was feeling. You'd seen that look in his eyes many times before. Just like you did from time to time, he was also feeling quite useless to the task force.

His smile quickly dropped as he put on a more serious face.

"Ryuzaki! Is there anything I can do, besides being Misa's manager?"

"You want to be useful?" L asked, not sparing Matsuda a glance.

"Yes!" Matsuda answered eagerly. He seemed ready to do just about anything to prove himself.

"Then could you get me another cup of coffee?"

You cringed at L's reply and felt upset about how Matsuda seemed so defeated by L's request. It wasn't just L who made comments like that. Unfortunately, Matsuda was a frequent recipient of criticism from most of the task force.

Even so, he walked away to fulfill L's request, looking back at you for a moment. You tried to give him a sympathetic smile, and again, he smiled back, just like he always did. But this time, the smile seemed forced.

time skip to lunch time

You waited anxiously at the place where you and Matsuda usually had lunch. He was never this late, in fact, you two would usually walk here together. But you haven't seen him since he went to fetch L's coffee, and it was beginning to worry you. Matsuda was relatively good at not letting all of the stress and criticism get to him. He was always quick to bounce back and have a smile on his face. It was one of the reasons you liked him so much, and in a 'more than friendly colleagues' kind of way. But today might have been his breaking point.

After a few more minutes, you finally saw him coming your way. His hair was slightly disheveled, lunch in one hand and papers in another. You quickly straightened your back and put on a smile to try and brighten the mood that you knew wouldn't be all that great. However, the second he sat down, your face dropped.

His eyes were slightly red, and even though he had a smile on his face, it was obvious that he had just cried.

He quickly looked at his watch, "I'm sorry I was so late y/n! I seem to have lost track of time." he said letting out a laugh.

You looked at him as he quickly opened his lunch and started to eat. His eyes looking everywhere but at yours. You figured he didn't want to talk about what was going on. But you wanted to try your best to help him, so you decided to, albeit hesitantly, ask "Hey... Matsuda, are you feeling okay?".

"Of course I'm okay!" He replied almost too quickly, giving you a smile but still not looking directly at your eyes.

You leave it at that and let the silence take over, not wanting to push any further and make him uncomfortable. You also couldn't find it in yourself to continue normal conversations like you always did. Talking about how Kira might be a police officer or even a politician, or complaining yet again about how exhausting the security measures were for getting into the taskforce headquarters.

10 minutes passed by without another word exchanged and it only got increasingly unbearable for you. Lunches with Matsuda are never like this.

"I'm pretty useless aren't I?" he asked suddenly, though in a light-hearted way. The hurt in his voice was more than obvious. He leaned his head back, staring at the ceiling in an attempt to not cry again.

"What? Why would you even say that? Of course not." you say, putting your chopsticks down and looking at him. "I know how you must feel. I feel that way too a lot, but trust me, you're not useless."

"You don't need to lie to me, I'm not that stupid." He silently remarked, eyes finally meeting yours."

Your heart sank as you looked at his eyes, you finally realized just how much everyone's comments affected him.

"Matsuda... please don't say that. Just think about it. There were well over a hundred police officers in the Kira investigation before, and out of the seven who decided to continue, even when things seemed dangerous, you were one of them. You may not be L or Light, but you're you, and your contributions may be different from theirs, but that doesn't make them worthless."

"Y/n, I..."

"Also, I know that no one applauded or even recognized you for it, but you're the one who helped Light figure out the connection between Kira and the Yotsuba Group, right? That's such a huge lead! How could you ever think you're useless?"

"That was just one small thing. And like you said, only seven people continued. Only seven and yet, I'm still the most incapable and useless. It's not just me who thinks that, everyone does, and I can't even blame them. Everybody else is so serious and I feel like a stupid kid trying to fit in or be of help to someone. "

"No Matsuda." you interrupted while getting up from your seat. "You may think the way you act is "childish" or "stupid", but to me, your ability to stay positive even in such grim circumstances makes everything more... bearable, and I might not be able to speak for everybody else, but I know for a fact that you're the reason I keep on coming here every day, the reason I try my best to work towards finding Kira. I look forward to lunch together, not just because of our fun conversations, but because you give me so much energy and motivation to work harder. I just..."

Knowing the last thing you wanted to say to him, you embraced him in a hug, hoping he could feel all your thoughts and emotions through it. After a few seconds, he returned the hug, burying his face in the crook of your neck.

"Matsuda... I love you"

There was a long pause before his hug tightened.

He replied, "I love you too y/n."

Now I'm really thinking how L really did like Matsuda, his sense of idealism, his tendency to accept being the idiot and speak whatever controversial idea because you never know when that might spark an actual breakthrough.... He sort of found him funny and almost endearing to a point, how he doesn't really have such a big fear of ridicule, how he's the most trusting and willing to go through with whatever crazy idea L comes up with...

L just likes to really pester, belittle and poke fun at the poor guy, just like you'd be a total jerk to a younger sibling who admires you....

I feel like pre-Kira Light would actually be a super sweet and caring boyfriend

If his s/o is shy they can be assured he’s going to leave absolutely no chance to tease them about it

He finds it absolutely adorable how shy they are, and would probably tease them about it even before they got together

If someone, however, made fun of his s/o’s shyness (other than him ofc) man would be ready to throw hands

But of course, he doesn’t, instead choosing to let his mouth curl into a painfully scary smile as he asks them to repeat their jab at his s/o’s shyness, which seems enough for them to stutter out an apology and run away

Though pre-Kira Light would always respect his s/o’s boundaries and never force them into anything, their shyness would awaken a slightly sadistic side to Kira-Light

He enjoyed immensely watching his s/o squirm and struggle to find words even in simple everyday occasions

Often in the bedroom, he’d play dumb and get his s/o to tell him exactly what it was they wanted, their stuttering and blushing being a huge turn on for him

L has had his fair share of quietness and keeping to himself, so he understands if his s/o might be a little shy around people

He finds it quite cute, actually

Most people thought his s/o was arrogant and stuck up when they refused to speak in public, but L knew better than that.

He knew they just struggled a little and were shy when it came to social interactions

L is known to be extremely curious and experimental in nature, which is why it’s a guilty pleasure of his to rile his s/o up in public

When the investigation of the Kira case was underway, every single time his s/o had a report to announce verbally, L would discreetly place his hands on their waist/ thigh and watch in amusement as they stuttered and stumbled over words

He quite enjoyed watching their face grow red from the contact

Although he can be a little shit at times, L would definitely never force his s/o into anything he knew they were uncomfortable with

That doesn’t mean he won’t tease them about it, though (just a little ;))

Death note au based on that one tumblr post about a necromancer who brings back a serial killer’s victims where L discovers that Matsuda is a necromancer and has him bring back some of Kira’s victims just to see Light freak out.

Included in the people brought back is Naomi Misora. She confirms that Light is Kira but they can’t just say they brought her back to life, so she joins the task force and pretends she never died in order to get more concrete evidence on Light. Light is freaking out and trying to figure out a way to convince everyone that she’s a fake because he knows she has to be a fake, but he can’t explain why without admitting that he was the one that killed her.

This probably culminates in Light having Rem kill Watari and L, and Matsuda bringing them back the next day, which shatters the last piece of sanity Light had.

Gah still thinking about that cute Lawtsuda drawing by fh-999 I reblogged yesterday

Just imagining Matsu wants to take a break so he takes a quick little power nap on the couch and L just can’t help but notice how cozy he looks, so he joins him, sitting next to him at first.

They start to frequent just having these little naps together. One day, Matsu asks why L always sleeps next to him during his break and he just flatly says in that monotone voice of his, “I feel safe sleeping next to you.” and cue Matsuda turning into a blushing mesh but then so boldly says, “I can make you feel even safer.” L would be intrigued a little by what he could possibly have in mind so he lets him continue that thought.

SO THEN, Matsu pulls L into his lap and wraps his arms around him and just a singular “oh” is all L can utter at the sheer closeness. Matsu feeling warm against him. He rests his head against his chest, but it doesn’t feel close enough. He tells Matsu to take off his jacket, leaving Matsu thoroughly confused but complies, allowing L what he truly desired and just rests his head on Matsu’s chest, enjoying listening to his heartbeat.

Being the on the spot guy, Matsu thinks he can make L even safer feeling, so he wraps his jacket loosely around L. Man is gonna be sleepin’ like a baby now. Pure bliss. Matsu better be in a comfortable position cause L won’t be budging for the next hour dgdhhdjddkk

Suffice to say, future breaks are going to have lots of cuddles.

Matsuda x Reader - Sketches of Love

Synopsis: You've had a crush on Matsuda for quite some time now. After he accidentally catches you drawing him in your sketchbook, things change between you.

If you just smoothed the edges here, maybe added some shading there… Ugh! It was no use; the sketch wasn’t good no matter how many times you went over it. You had really tried your best, too. And spent way too long trying to perfect it, even though it was just a sketch. You thumbed over the sketches you had already done - they were all of your longtime friend and crush Matsuda. He took up most of your sketchbook. You couldn’t help that his face was the perfect thing to help you practice sketching people. You looked back at your first sketch of him. It was undoubtedly a rough draft - you hadn’t even finished the right side of his face! But after comparing it to today’s… Maybe you had gotten better. 

Before you could start a new sketch, the door to task force headquarters swung open. You hurriedly slammed your sketchbook closed. It was just Light returning from his ‘date’ with Misa. Honestly, you felt sorry for her. She deserved better than him. Light ignored you and went to check the updated information on the Kira case. Thankfully, what you did for the Kira investigation didn’t need to be monitored too closely: all you did was thoroughly sift through evidence after it had been looked after by each of the task force members. And if you found anything of note that the others hadn’t, you were to report it. Since your duties didn’t take that long, you had plenty of time to expand your artistic abilities. You hesitantly opened your sketchbook and kept an eye on Light, but he showed no interest in what you were doing. You decided it was safe to start a new sketch, with Matsuda as your subject, of course. 

You were so engrossed with your sketch that you hadn’t even noticed someone else enter headquarters. They took a seat next to you on the couch and you felt the space next to you sink down. You turned your head sharply to see Matsuda peering at your sketchbook, mouth slightly agape. You didn’t have time to close your sketchbook before he caught what you were drawing, but even if you had, you realized he had seen you sketching him. It was obvious - no one else in the task force looked quite like Matsuda did, so you couldn’t pass it off as someone else. As you were contemplating what to do, Matsuda let out a small chuckle.

“What?” You asked, confused. 

“I never knew you were an artist, Y/N! I’m flattered that you’re drawing me.” Matsuda chuckled again as he ran his hand through his hair. You turned away from him, mostly to stop him from seeing that you were blushing. He was flattered?

“Oh, I’m sorry. Geez, I really do mess everything up… You didn’t mean for me to see that, right?” Matsuda seemed apologetic. He was too sweet for his own good; it was part of the reason you liked him so much. That, and the fact that he was super cute. 

“Uh, yeah.” You said, staring down at the sketch you had drawn of him. Your heart was pounding and you couldn’t tell whether you were excited, scared, or a combination of both. It felt like Matsuda had just looked at something private. 

“I can just forget I saw it, I swear!” Matsuda held his hands together in front of his face. You shook your head.

“There’s no use in pretending.” 

“O-Oh, alright! Well, since you’re an artist, I assume you’ve drawn lots of other things! If it’s okay with you, can I take a peek?” Matsuda’s eyes were locked on yours. It seemed there was no getting out of this. If he saw the rest of your sketchbook, your crush on him would be glaringly apparent. Truthfully, telling Matsuda that you liked him to his face seemed hard to do. But maybe, just maybe, he’d understand your feelings without you having to speak a word. 

You took a deep breath, and flipped back to the beginning of your sketchbook, back to that half-sketch of Matsuda’s face. You angled the sketchbook in a way that Matsuda could see your sketch clearly. He took it in, his eyes going over every line. He didn’t speak for a while, so you flipped to the next sketch: a more finished sketch of his face, but still a rough draft. You continued flipping until you got to today’s sketch. You looked at Matsuda, heart now in your throat. A million thoughts were swirling through your mind. Did he not like it? Was he creeped out? Did he… like it? Was he impressed? Would this change things between you? And if it did, would it be for what you’d been hoping for?

“You’re really talented, Y/N!” Matsuda beamed, a smile growing across his face. You breathed a sigh of relief. At least he didn’t seem creeped out.

“Thank you.”

“But, uh, why are all of the sketches of me? N–Not that I mind or anything!” Matsuda’s question was innocent, curious. You looked back down at the sketchbook, gripping it tighter. You prayed he’d get the hint.

“Oh…” Matsuda trailed off before he gently placed his hand on your arm. You looked at him, fear starting to set in, but he was smiling.

“Are you trying to tell me that… you like me?” He asked. You nodded, and you were sure he could see your blush by now. Thankfully, Matsuda got the hint. You honestly weren’t sure if he would.

“You know, Y/N, I’ve felt the same way for a while now.”

“What?! Really? Why didn’t you say anything?!” You hit his arm lightly with the sketchbook. 

“Ow…” Matsuda pretended to wince in pain. “I didn’t want it to affect our work. And I didn’t want to lose you as a friend, either.” 

“Gosh… you’re unbelievable.” You giggled. You couldn’t believe that all this time he had liked you back! You looked at Matsuda and smiled before resting your head on his shoulder. He awkwardly wrapped his arm around you before kissing the top of your head. You were sure you were bright red by now. 

“So, I guess this means we need to go on a date as an official couple!” Matsuda declared.

“Couple?! At least ask me to be your partner first…”

“I will, I will! After our date~” Matsuda grinned. 

“And when is this date?”

“How about tomorrow at 7:00pm?”

“Works for me.”

“Then I’ll pick you up promptly at seven!”

“You goofball, we can just go together from headquarters.” You rolled your eyes.

“Oh, right! Then let’s do just that!” Matsuda kissed the top of your head again and you melted into him. Out of all the things that could’ve happened, you didn’t expect this to happen. You were so happy that Matsuda had seen your sketchbook, even though it had been an accident.

🍪anon here! I’m kinda realizing a lot of my thoughts pop out at night for me… and they are usually about “would L do this?” And I think yes, yes he would.

I think L would find people doing trick shots with paper and a trash can stupid (marauds would try this and get reprimanded) but if it’s marshmallow trick shots he would find it entertaining(reader and L are pretty good with these tricks since it passes time)

late night christmas headcanons with (some) the death note cast!

this post will include: light, l lawliet, misa, matsuda, near, mello, matt & sayu.

LIGHT YAGAMI ★ [pre/no-kira!]

unsurprisingly, light is a very considerate gift giver. on one hand he tries to get gifts that will be more beneficial in the long run! at the same time he attempts to get something that he knows the person will like.

i can imagine light would be the kind of person to end up scouring the store for something affordable, useful and still likable. (spoiler! he fails to find items that fall into all three categories)

his gift-wrapping is neat. his mother, sachiko, taught him how to wrap gifts at the ripe age of 7. ever since then, he helps her every christmas :)

most items on wish list are stationary, up until little specific things — like a certain keychain or an expensive book.

one of his favourite things about christmas is the cookies that his mom makes. his favourites are (of course) the classic chocolate chip and simple vanilla biscuits.

he used to believe in santa when he was younger until the illusion and magic was ruined for him. as a result, while sayu was still young, he made sure that she'd continue to believe and have something to look forward to every christmas.

one time, he got L for a secret santa activity. he was fully aware that L was already rich. he could have anything he wanted! and so, he decided to make his own gift (with misa's assistance).

L LAWLIET ★

when he was younger, christmas was quite bleak at wammy's. other kids seemed to have fun but he just found himself incredibly uninterested in the holiday.

still, watari would get him gifts — and secretly? he felt appreciated.

years later, the kira task force would somehow find themselves discussing their holiday plans. L had decided to allow everyone to take a few days off (as pushed by his mentor, watari) to celebrate christmas with their families.

matsuda (bless his soul) decides to go ahead and suggest an office christmas party! at first, L is hesitant..

but he accepts. obviously.

with their basically infinite budget, the food is to die for. cakes, ice cream, meats, a few traditional meals from across the world..

secretly, this was L's quiet way of showing his own appreciation to everyone.

now you're probably wondering, 'what are his gifts like?' ... honestly lame. it depends; but for the most part, his gifts rely on practicality.

misa gave him shampoo for christmas once. and deodorant. and slippers. she wasn't trying to be mean, she just thought L didn't know those things existed and she wanted to guide him..

if you aren't upfront on what you want for christmas, he'll give you stationary, socks, utensils, etc.

MISA AMANE ★

misa is serving absolute cunt in that outfit she's wearing. she went all out - went shopping just for this. she's the type to wear little cute scarves, arm warmers, beanies.. and she looks good in them.

her gift giving abilities are god-like for the most part. she shops in advance and asks people for their wish lists

cute gift wrappers!! candy print, little cats, reindeer, hearts, etc. definitely for lights gift: she'd wrap it in hearts! (he did not reciprocate..)

at times, she worries she won't be able to spend christmas with her family (mostly just the task force) due to her modelling and acting career. she has to constantly do photoshoots, film commercials, and it stresses her out.

to make up for it: she drinks hot chocolate. and her hot chocolate is always the cutest. cute mugs, cute marshmallows, etc. but it still tastes good.

she taught sayu how to do her hot chocolate recipe! (it was barely her own recipe, she just adds alot of cute little etuff)

she's the type of gift wrapper to put ribbons on her gifts.

when asked about what she wanted for christmas, she said something cheesy like; 'anything as long as lights there'

TOUTA MATSUDA ★

draws/doodles on the gift tags! (taught by misa)

he nagged watari to teach him to make cookies. he wanted to make some christmas cookies for L, in hopes that he'd win his apprpval.

wears ugly christmas sweaters a few days before christmas.

and so, this conversation ensued;

L: 'that sweater looks rather old.' Matsu: 'what? no, its barely been used' L: 'ah. it mustve been rotting in your closet.'

loves the concept of santa claus. has tried to make watari dress up as santa.

when he was younger, his parents brought him to talk to santa! by this time, matsuda already new santa claus wasnt real.

and so, he had an existential crisis the moment he realized that there was infact a white haired-white bearded man, clad in red.. and may be his childhood hero.

he liked rudolph alot and for one Halloween, he dressed up as him

NEAR ★

christmas at wammys was especially tiring for him. the children screaming, the sound of wrapping paper ripping being heard throughout the entire orphanage.. wasn't for him!

he didn't have many friends so he never really received any gifts.

his first ever gift was from linda — it meant alot to him. it was a little paper origami doll of him. it was taped horribly.

his family before the orphanage? he couldn't really remember, so along with that, he couldn't remember the christmases they had.

near gives gifts when he can.. by that, when or if he remembers.

his gifts range from socks to an entire mansion. he's not very responsible with his money.

HATES the mistletoe. one time he was under it the same time as mello. did they kiss? no, but mello did chase him around.

now sorta looks forward to christmas because of eggnog and all the toys he gets out of it. he gets ALOT of toys.

he dislikes carollers. he thinks they're too noisy. one time, he and a few other kids were forced to perform a sonf infront of everyone as part of the wammy's christmas party..

he was stood still and stayed quiet the entire time.

MELLO ★

he had alot of items on his wish list. most predominantly; accessories, clothes and of course.. chocolate.

mello is given a LOT of chocolate every christmas — with the exception of near who gave him a toothbrush out of mild concern.

his gifts are the best. by that, he just gets whatever the person wants (but at times gets everything)

mello just wants to be better than everyone when it comes to the gifts. and everything. there's a reasoning behind it, being; from a young age he always thought that if he gave the most and got the most, it would mean that everyone would like him.

there's a secret mostly one sided competition between near, matt and mello every year over who gives and receives the most gifts.

he gets into multiple fights with near, which results in him dumping a glass of eggnog down near's back.

near was not happy with the disgusting feel of wet clothes stuck to his skin. insert him literally SCREAMING

the closest person of authority in the area was giving mello a look of, 'make him stop or so help me'

wears all black to a christmas party with the exception of a red christmas hat

MATT ★

his wishlist is a little expensive, mostly 'cause it's all video game related — and clothes. did he list the clothes? no, mello did, 'cause matt's clothes are starting to fall apart at the seams.

he and mello think the christmas games are lame but they participate anyway. matts always helping mello win.

matt absolutely half asses his gifts! unless you're someone he likes or has a crush on.

lowkey pigs out during the christmas feast. he has fast metabolism so it doesn't really affect his body, but he does receive these wide-eyed looks from mello like 'holy shit you're gonna eat ALL of that?'

sings christmas songs to annoy everyone. definitely.

when he was younger, he wasn't really able to celebrate christmas properly with his family. i headcanon that he got into wammy's at a really young age and that he was there when near first arrived too.

he might not seem like it but he was one of the people (like linda) to try and make christmas a little more happy and sweet for the newcomers/the younger kids in the orphanage. he didn't want them to experience the same dissappointment and upset he felt every christmas when he was still with his family.

matt plays holiday pranks on everyone.

this is contradictory to the headcanon i made before the last, but he once told a random kid on the street santa claus wasn't real and it started crying.

SAYU YAGAMI ★

when she was younger, she'd save up all her allowance so she could buy her family gifts. admittedly — sayu's gifts never really aligned much with whatever was on their christmas lists. but she was so sweet, how could they reject?

sayu once got her and light matching slippers. hers were bunny slippers and his was dog slippers. (based off of this)

she believed santa was real up until the age of 15. she got a little angsty around those years..

her wishlist is mostly things like nail polish, certain percume, journaling books, clothes — but one year she wanted a pet mouse.. so she wrote down mouse.

well, sachiko wasn't a big fan of rodents. so instead she got her a computer mouse. and a new PC to go along with it. sayu liked it! she did want a computer too, yes..

she was salty about the pet mouse thing for the next 2 weeks though.

can't wrap gifts to save her life. she's the gift giver who puts her gifts into those paperbags and puts a ribbon sticker.

sayu loves to bake cookies with her mom. even after the events (yes, when she was traumatized to all hell by mello and the mafia) of death note, she continued to bake with her every christmas.

Hi anon! Thanks for the ask. Re:dn is my succinctly named WIP and it lives permanently in my head, peeking it's not-so-little head out every once in a while. Not-so-little because every time I remember, I keep adding to it. And the fic, intended to be a short 5k one-shot, just.doesn't.end. It's at 17k now, more than thrice it's expected length. I've given up on ending this monster. I love it, so alas, it'll keep being written and written and written in my drafts. Maybe I will post it, maybe I won't.

Re:dn is about Light getting reincarnated in a peaceful world. He is pretty happy with his new life. Unfortunately for him, he isn't the only one reincarnated. The rest of the main death note characters are reincarnated as well. And they aren't very happy with Kira.

Starring Light "what is Kira? Is it tasty?" Yagami, L "I will get you to confess. Your feelings <3" Lawliet, Misa "date me, senpai!" Amane, Mikami "this life is a reward for my service to God" Teru, Matsuda "I'll make sure you stay on the right path this time" Touta. Plus several others, who aren't here because it would clutter the paragraph.

Light was born on the 28th of February, year unknown. His parents weren’t Soichiro and Sachiko Yagami. They were utterly ordinary people in ordinary jobs. He was not an only child either. Light had a father, a mother, a younger sister, grandparents on both sides of the family and a lot of cousins. It was a large, extended family.

His parents worried when Light woke up screaming in the middle of the night. They worried even more when Light froze at sight of the plastic water-guns his cousins pointed at him and refused to come out of the closet till they were all gone. His parents, unlike his parents Before, got him the professional help he had never had. After-all, how was Light to explain he had been imprisoned under the suspicion of being Kira and his own father had fired an air gun at him at close range? Despite being his father? Despite understanding the danger of even blank shots at close range?

And in this new life, Light couldn’t explain it either. They could ask questions all they wanted, but Light had no answers for them. But something had to be done, something had to change. His parents couldn’t take the suffering of their child anymore, and Light couldn’t either. As an adult, he could pop pills for sleep as and when needed and needed to give no one any explanation – except occasionally his doctor for a prescription. As a child? This was dangerous for his health and sanity.

So, Light took advantage of being a child. Slowly, he opened up to the doctor his parents had arranged and talked about things from his past life as if they were dreams. 

Things could have gone wrong. They could have gone so, so wrong. The doctor could have labeled Light as a psychopath of some sort. He could have had Light been declared insane, his parents would then abandon him and this new life would be over even before it had begun.

Instead, his leap of faith was successful. His words were taken as the overactive imagination of a child. Of a genius child, who took in more of the world at a young age than his parents would have expected, and that had resulted in unintentionally traumatizing him.

Talking about it… helped. In ways more than Light had thought. Things he had never realized were wrong, feelings he had never realized he had buried, insecurities, fears, dreams, ideals…

It also helped that Light had realized his new world was more peaceful than Before. Crime was low, corruption was low, wars were few. Not non-existent, never that. But significantly lower than… than Before.

In this new world, Kira was not needed.

“You Make Me Feel Special!” - Various Death Note Characters

Headcanons: What type of dates would Death Note characters take their s/o on? No specific pronouns used for reader.

Characters Mentioned: Light Yagami, L Lawliet, Touta Matsuda, Misa Amane, Mihael Keehl

Category: Straight up, rot your teeth fluff.

Light:

•Fancy restaurants, very traditional, movie-like. The type to pull the move of leaving you an outfit and a note to be ready by X time. He wants it to be flashy and won’t settle for anything less. Would have an arm around you whenever you’re walking to or from the car, into the restaurant, etc.

•The other type I can see him doing are study dates, considering how academic he is himself. Will help you with anything that confuses you, asking each other questions, etc. Very chilled, imagine it with like warm ambient lighting and hot drinks in the evening. It would most likely be at his place, but he would make sure you’re comfortable and feel at home of course. If you need anything at all, he’s got it.

L:

•L has to be very private in his personal life, so there would probably be a lot of home dates. Movie nights or binge watching TV shows with mountains of snacks are far from uncommon. You could probably persuade him to play video games with you, and he’d probably be very competitive, just quietly so.

•A lot of the time he just works near you, since it’s better company than being alone. Try and force him to take breaks, if you can. He needs it.

•You could probably just sit there talking about anything and everything into the early hours of the morning, which he appreciates seeing as there aren’t many people he’s close enough to to do this, but equally, the relationship is built quite a bit on comfortable silence.

Matsuda:

•CEO OF FUN DATES!! You will NEVER be bored with this man I swear to you. I can see him being a fan of arcade dates and camping dates especially. Wherever you are or whatever you’re doing, he throws himself into it! I can see him totally getting carried away for time and you guys wouldn’t even realise how long you’d been out for.

•No matter how casual the date, he tends to come with some sort of gift. Flowers, chocolates, something along those lines, just to see you smile that little bit extra.

•We know Matsuda loves to be on trend, and so with that said, would totally take you shopping all the time with an excuse that you have to keep up with these things, and that what’s popular is constantly changing. He’ll totally spoil you with whatever you want. You look at something for even a second too long without a word and he’s offering to buy it for you and telling you how much it would suit you, where you could wear it, etc. He would literally never be the type to get bored standing around on these dates, he thrives on them, so take however long you want.

Misa:

•Another one for shopping dates, naturally. She loves this kind of thing! She’s running round, pulling outfits together for both of you, holding clothes up to you to try and visualise how you’d look, etc.

•Concert dates! You guys would be totally in touch with each other’s likes and talk about them all of the time, and this includes music taste. Thus, it’s quite often you end up surprising each other with concert tickets.

•Not really a proper date, but she would let you on the set of anything she was filming or taking pictures for, so long as she was allowed. She’ll tell you everything that’s going on and introduce you to everyone, and they always tell you that they’ve heard so many good things already from Misa herself.

Mello:

•Say it with me; LATE 👏 NIGHT 👏 DRIVES 👏 He will literally wake you up in the middle of the night and just ask if you wanna go for a drive because he’s bored. Just your average night with him. You’re asleep? That’s stupid. He needs your company.

•Blasting music, possibly speeding, all good vibes.

•You might end up stopping for food or just straight up trespassing somewhere like in those overnight challenges. (The non staged ones, anyway, which are few and far between.)

•Riding on the back of his motorcycle, send tweet. I am a simple woman, you lot.

Relationships, Lore So Far, Personality, Strengths, Weaknesses, Trivia

Relationships

She's aligned with Team L!! of course dnsjhd

Rie and L have a funny relationship because they've worked together for a while and seem close but aren't together (as far as the TF know at least. I'm not sure yet to what degree her relationship with L has progressed at the time the anime is set). but everyone who meets them goes: "a girl in love and a man who's apathetic"

She actually likes Light a lot, because he's a nice guy, when he's not Kira. would be friends with him in another life.

When it comes to 「Kira」 whoever they may be, she dislikes but understands them. She knows that there are problems in the world and a lot of them stem from "evil people", but she doesn't really believe in purely evil people, and also realises that Kira's methods are counterproductive.

Rie does NOT get along with Misa. she can tolerate her but only in small doses. She's always kind to her, though this is mostly so she can try to get information out of her.

As for the rest of the Task Force: Likes them all. She never met Ukita though cause she introduces herself a while after L does in my current plan. Thinks Matsuda is a little naïve and Chief Yagami is blinded by his love for his son.

At the moment I'm thinking Rie isn't an orphan but lived somewhere near Wammy's House when she was little. She loooves annoying Near, Matt and Mello.

Lore So Far

there's a lot of unrefined stuff, what I have here is likely to change

I mentioned beforehand she works with L for a few years before the Kira case. she actually spent a lot of her life tracking him down, basically just to play with him/annoy him because... she's just an ass like that. So eventually she was able to contact him and they played a Game of cat and mouse, detective vs detective (I have a minific written for this that I might share. also Rie's not quite a detective... kinda a vigilante? not sure how to explain)

my current plan is she ends up getting stuck in a situation like Light was, where L suspects her for a case (she hacked into his database and deleted all his files) and has to work with her and keep an eye on her. I'm considering that she purposely got caught bc she was in trouble with more dangerous people, but maybe L catches her because, well, he's the world's greatest detective and the dangerous people just encounter Rie later

she's eventually cleared of suspicion because she wasn't involved in the cases she wiped, she just deleted them to be annoying and win the Game. Rie sticks around to annoy L for a while but then in come the dangerous people!!

the reason for this isn't fully fleshed out yet, but she gets herself kidnapped and once they realise she worked with L they try to get information on him out of her (through torture pretty much). this bit is the bit I'm probably least happy with, I want to work on it more. but in the end her stomach gets cut open, she escapes and collapses/gets rescued, and L realises he can trust her.

Rie goes to various countries and does her own thing for a few years, occasionally assisting L on cases, before she comes to Japan for the Kira case

there's so much Kira related stuff that I think I'll make another post sometime haha.

but that is the simplified and unrefined version of her backstory!

Personality

a proud feminist!! because come on death note needs one. (I know I said earlier she likes Light and dislikes Misa but the way he treats her ticks Rie off)

honestly can be very annoying on purpose, like a sibling

that said she's a good person overall, has done suspicious contract work and whatever, but she loves people and she really cares for everyone in her life

she's the smartest woman in the world!! because honestly it is a crime that all the smart people in death note are men and hey, it's kind of cool to make an oc who's the anything-est in the world. (I wouldn't say she's REALLY the smartest, she just has a fairly wide skill set and is intelligent. maybe the highest-achieving)

Her major in uni was psychology! Criminal and maybe abnormal psych, that is. also has dabbled in sociology and neurology. Rie knows a lot of languages.

I know I just said she's optimistic, but this is because she makes a conscious effort to be. Rie's got a lot of anxiety and worries, and struggles with several mental health issues.

Her pride is as bad as L's ego. Actually, she'd claim it's worse.

Rie is actually just an alias. I'm debating on, if she lived near Wammy's, she might have met L and this would be a nickname derived from her middle name. but then I have to explain the "woah memory loss!!" in the whole database/suspicion incident. so, it's probably just a name that she likes. or maybe she shortened her own middle name.

The full alias is Rie Takamura. She also goes by Hina Suzuki (Japanese equivalent of Jane Doe) and 1429 (fourteen twenty-nine).

SHE LOVES CASINOS. her theme song would probably be "Joker and the Thief" (or maybe not, but it's in my playlist for her). Rie's very careful not to let herself get addicted to gambling but gosh she loves going to a casino, pretending to be a dumb girl, and counting cards until she can sweep the table off its legs.
