national poetry month, day 25
Reading Cavafy How many pages did the poet turn before dozing off, knowing he would never find what had been lost? Those roses on the table cast a shadow in the shape of a darker rose, flattened there beside the book. He sleeps alone where the scent remains. —Timothy Liu

Rereading &Change vol 2
also check out &Change, it's a journal of poetry by gay men and it's only like $3 to get a copy
This is how you do good short poetry, people! That's 24 syllables, 26 if you include the title.
My literally breakdown:
Starting with the title by focusing on the relationship "bromance" when the body of the poem is such concrete details about things that are happening in one moment, it primes us to interpret them in this context. This description of what would be a two second interaction irl is synecdoche for the bromance relationship if you want to use your ap lit terms. The first few lines could evoke cultural dissonance between narrator and subject. Like why point out it's playing from the smart fridge unless that's somehow significant to you. And it's new technology so it's interesting and a little absurd when there are usually so many other options available, it shows a certain degree of wealth. The extra break before the last line creates tension to the reader. As an incomplete sentence that reads like a full sentence that stanza alone "when he asked me if I wanted him." Since there's no punctuation you can continue the sentence into the last line but that break forces you to consider the question first. Do "I" want him? Did he pause when he was asking the narrator? Is that wishful thinking? This is in a journal of poetry by gay men, in that demographic like who hasn't had that moment with a bro? There's also a different ambiguity/double entendre to that last line. Thermostat or hookup? But it's delivered casually even from narrator to reader. Like this is So Good.

Timothy Liu - Thoreau
"Thoreau", um poema de Timothy Liu
Meu pai e eu não temos para onde ir.Sua esposa não nos deixa entrar em casa —medo de contrair AIDS. Ela acredita quedormir com homens é pior do que um pecado, meu pai diz, enquanto nos sentamos no meio-fioem frente à casa dos vizinhos.Sessenta e quatro anos tornaram meu paiimpotente. Raízes grisalhas e tinta pretadesbotada manchando seus cabelos o fazem parecerquase cômico, como se sua…

Love Poem
What a poem
wants is not what I want
necessarily
though it can be difficult
to explain
why what I want is not
what fastens
these words to the page
when it’s clear
I’m willing to give up
what I want—

Timothy Liu - The Lovers
I was always afraid of the next card
the psychic would turn over for us—                              Forgive me for not knowing how we were
every card in the deck.
