My TMA theory of the day: Elias sent Martin to work in the archives because Martin was his second choice for Archivist. In this essay I will

Jon picked Tim and Sasha to work as his assistants, but Elias chose Martin.

Elias knows Martin lied on his CV and that he not only is unqualified for the library but even more unqualified for the archives, so there's no reason to send him down there unless he has some other indefinable characteristics that make him well suited for it.

Sasha was Gertrude's choice for next Archivist, but 1) Elias was mad at Gertrude and 2) Sasha unfortunately seems to lack the "don't die" skill.

Martin definitely has the "don't die" skill, as evidenced by him surviving not only his initial encounter with Prentiss but an extended siege by her, and then squirreling away enough CO2 and corkscrews to fend off a subsequent attack.

When Jon is unavailable, Martin does an excellent job of both taking and recording statements. He doesn't enjoy it, but he does it well.

In 95, he specifically says "I don't know why I'm still doing this" about recording statements. Jon's back and recording them was his job. Why is Martin still recording? He doesn't need to for his research, he could just read them. Is he feeling the need to record because Beholding has a foothold on him?

When Jon is away, Martin is effectively the acting Archivist.

Consider the reasons Peter takes Martin under his wing. 1) He's the highest ranked, which implies already he was next in line. 2) He has whatever those indefinable qualities are that make him suited to the supernatural. 3) If he takes Martin, then if something were to happen to Jon, Elias will be SOL on Archivists and will have to start from scratch.

Lost: Four

Thor was quiet for a long time. Watching things going on in the hall. The dancers. The messengers. Your unobtrusive security detail, Black-clad, and watching him carefully. 

He appreciated that. That level of loyalty. It might not be a significant presence. But it was a presence. They never took their focus off of where you were. Or where everyone else was in relation to you. Even him. And if they didn’t love you, nothing would be that tightly controlled. 

“I see you’ve noticed my Court of Shadows,” you tell him, smiling a little, inclining your head to indicate the black-robed man edging closer to be nearer to Thor.

“Spies?” Thor questioned.

“When the occasion calls for it,” you answer calmly, acknowledging the man with a smile and a raise of your glass. Wether in thanks or in command, Thor didn’t know, but the speed at which the man melted back into the recesses of the party was impressive. 

“When did this court become an... entity?” he asked. 

“Sometime between Aeon becoming my regent and My father’s death,” you explain. “Not all of my Uncles believed me... Suitable to follow my father to the high throne.”

Thor made a soft, thoughtful sound and nodded. That, he did know. Odin had briefly considered a number of your cousins. And then a coup, to take the crown. But ultimately, Odin believed you’d be more biddable. Easier to control. Especially with a Priest in charge of your upbringing. Priests, Odin thought could not, a good ruler make. And that had made Thor less than interested in you. 

But now? Now that he’s seen hints of teeth and claws? He was happy to say that, at there very least, he was paying attention. He knew that one day there would be children. And it was a blessing, of sorts, to see that you wouldn’t simply allow them to run over you. Or let him to run over you. 

“And what do you believe?” he asked. 

“I believe that it is time to do my duty,” you answer levelly. “For good or for ill, the crown has come to rest on my head. I am the Empress of Dreams. The Wildcat of the North.  And the time has come. Aeon, gods bless him, has put his life on hold long enough.”

Thor grunted, nodding as he processed that. It was quietly expressed, but he could feel the power behind the words. The determination to follow your stars.

“And for Asgard?” he pressed. 

“I will do my best,” you tell him, “I’ve studied the things that were sent to me. And I have ideas.”

“Ideas?” he said, quirking an eyebrow, amused. 

“Your father’s foreign policy is horrific,” you tut, “how he thinks any of his current treaties are sustainable I will never know.”

“I’d give you a lot of gold to tell him that to his face,” he said, chuckling.

“I’m sure you would,” you say wryly. 

The silence stretched out for a long moment as Thor watches you, watching the dance floor. He doesn’t know this dance, or he might ask you to join him. To see if you’re compatible in less... polite to discuss ways. He certainly knows you are not a virgin, and that’s a comfort. Though he wonders what initiated you. And if it’s a story you might tell him if he asked nicely. 

“Empress!”

The shout makes you start and a page, young and freckles splashed over his cheeks skids to a halt in front of the steps, just barely remembering the manners his mother pounded into his head. 

“What is it, Boy?” you say, instantly alert as the band grinds to a halt. All discordant sounds. 

“The Lord of Spiders has returned,” he panted, “He requests your presence.”

“He requests me?” you say archly, quirking an eyebrow and leaning forward to look the page in the face. 

The boy pales and hesitantly nods, “He says that refusal means war, your Majesty,” he stammered. 

Aeon, unobtrusively stands at your other elbow, awaiting orders. Awaiting any word that he needs to begin organizing. You turn towards him slightly, “And at my betrothal ball,” you tut, “Has the man no shame?”

“Evidently not, my darling,” Aeon answered, folding his arms. 

You turn back towards the boy, clearly ashamed at having to deliver so churlish a message, “What does your mother call you?” you ask him. 

“Rif, your majesty,” he answered, growing paler under his freckles. 

“Find your way to the Kitchens, Rif. Tell Cook I sent you. He’ll fix you up with enough food to see you home... And when you get there, tell your mother she should be proud.”

The boy staggered backward, nodding, trembling as he went and bolted out of the room. 

“And I, your majesty?” Aeon asked, face getting tight. 

“Fetch me my bow and gather everyone into the hall... If the Bastard means to make war, it need not spoil the party,” you say, nodding. 

“Y/N,” Aeon cautioned, hesitating. 

“Have you different council, Uncle? With the enemy at the gates?” you ask, “What would you have me do?”

Thor watches several expressions cross Aeon’s face. Hesitation. Resignation. And finally, Pride. 

“Whatever it is you’re about to do,” he said, bowing slightly. 

“Meet me in the gallery. Send me my finest 3 archers,” you voice in quiet. Soft. Even Thor can scarcely hear you and he’s sitting immediately next to you. 

“Nero fiddled while Rome Burned,” you say to the assemblage, “And I intend to dance while the Lord of Spiders wages war.” Laughter answers the statement and Thor watches you stand, “But before I do that, I really need a change of outfit.”

More laughter follows you as you exit the hall through a side door. And Thor is left wondering what exactly it is you mean to do. He doesn’t even have time to ask you. You’re just gone.

And when he looks around, really looks. Three of your Court of Shadows have also gone.

Shade’s OCs

Here is a list with all OCs I have so far, including fandom and non-fandom OCs. Some of these might appear new to you (if you have been following me for a while); some might seem familiar. I offer this as a reference, but also as a way to talk about characters a bit. No facts are set in stone; questions and such are always welcome ^^

I’ll start with the ones I’ve already introduced here.

Fandom OCs/Fan characters

Anna Haas My Outlast fan character who exists in an AU based on The Murkoff Account. The result of the question “what if the baby was real?” that appeared in my head one day, Anna exists in several iterations depending on several factors.

Her introduction into the world was more than a little messy; the assault on her mother, Michelle, resulted in Anna being born way too early and spending the first months of her existence in NICU. Obviously she survived the whole ordeal. Under the care of her mother Anna turned into an overall friendly and optimistic child who is very close to her parent, albeit often worried about her given the trauma Michelle endured (which she tries to hide in front of Anna, but the psychological consequences still show up).  She’s a headstrong person, determined to pursue any goal she sets for herself, and has a certain tendency to want to take on a leading role in whatever project or even game she is involved in. These traits carry over when she grows up. The past of her family very much interests her even if the truth about her father and her parents’ involvement in Mt. Massive end up taking a toll on her world perception. She becomes more reserved, perhaps even more irritable in certain aspects after the “revelation”, but sets on a quest to find out what exactly ended up happening to her father with a goal to find disclosure and a peace of mind - a dangerous endeavour perhaps, but one she considers worth the risk. The outcome of all this will ultimately depend on two major variables in her story...

Kyniera the Imp A DOOM OC heavily inspired by the codex entries in 2016 and various headcanons I developed about the species’ biology. Not entirely compliant with the lore presented in DOOM Eternal, as she was created before the new game came out; so to some degree she might exist in some AU as well.

A determined survivalist long used to the harsh ways of Hell that are not that much friendlier to demons than they are to any other life forms (especially so if you are a low-ranked Imp - considered nothing more than cannon fodder), Kyniera is an Imp who has gathered enough experience and a certain amount of caution as a result to survive longer than many others of her breed. This, coupled with a growing sense of self-awareness that is present in older Imps only, makes her suitable to take the role of pack leader in any Imp group she finds herself in. If not leader, then at least someone who is confident enough to influence group decisions, especially when it comes to hunting. An unfortunate event has resulted in her, among other lower beasts, being captured by higher-ranking demons and carried off to a combat arena in the depths of Hell to fight against oftentimes stronger opponents for the sheer amusement of Hell denizens but also to test the physical prowess of the members of Hell’s armies, including herself. Kyniera, much to everyone’s surprise perhaps, has proven to be a particularly resilient Imp, showing good knowledge of how to use her innate fire ability and agility to her advantage, becoming somewhat of a “pet” in the arena. Not necessarily a good thing for the Imp as the arena masters and spectators were probably more curious to see how long she will prevail mentally, out of sheer sadistic delight. However, one losing fight convinces her to turn tail and run eventually - and she manages to escape the arena, overcoming her own fears. With a growing hatred towards the “higher-ups” and an unwillingness to die for anyone, Kyniera wishes to distance herself from all Hell politicking and solely focus her efforts on survival and hunting alone. An endeavour that may not come easy as she still ends up getting caught in the crossfire of intra-Hell conflicts between warring factions which ultimately sends her down a path that just may lead to a particular metamorphosis...

Non-fandom OCs

Synth Rex Synth is an old and powerful daemon lord* who rules over an entire realm. He appears to be a cheerful and playful person who interprets almost everything as a game of sorts. Whatever is said or even done to him, Synth will keep smiling and talking in a friendly and ofttimes jolly way. This demeanour keeps showing even if Synth is experiencing negative emotions - as a way to keep up his composure, but also as a way to “troll” people, especially so if they appear more hostile. With his mindset mostly revolving around the maintenance of his realm, Synth is willing to do a lot of things to ensure the prosperity of it.  He can be described as a scholar of sorts since he enjoys reading and travelling throughout the multiverse to learn and explore different dimensions, the people, cultures etc. It's one of the more effective ways for Synth to occupy himself and prevent boredom. Other occupations may be training, alchemy, and watching individuals and events having managed to pique his interest, especially if they feature revenge. Unlike my fandom OCs, there is no set storyline for this universe. It’s more of an open world revolving around Synth’s realm and his family as well.

Elizabeth Morgan Elizabeth is a fairly old and mighty daemon and Synth's lover. Elizabeth is what one can describe as a willful and self-confident woman who will not let others influence her in a negative way or push her around. Charming, elegant, and equipped with experience collected over 712 years of her life, Elizabeth prefers to use social skills to go about many matters. This is further helped by her mind control abilities which she can use quite deftly, provided an entity is not more powerful than her. She will often meet others with an overall pleasant demeanour, polite, respectful, and decent, simultaneously confident and not afraid of speaking her mind. Greater slights against her or her family will leave a bitter taste in her mouth and will not be forgotten so easily. As a daemon, Elizabeth has no inhibitions about using her mind control abilities to further her goals. She can be a manipulative person who likes to use a person's mental weak points to convince them of acting or thinking in a way benefiting her. When talking proves to be futile, Elizabeth is still capable of defending herself and will not hesitate to do so: like others of her species, she possesses enhanced strength and the ability to shapeshift into a fearsome daemon form.

Shannon Rex [picture not yet available on Tumblr] Shannon is the first and eldest of Synth and Elizabeth's children. Shannon had had a shapeshifting "accident" at the age of three months, having transformed into an indescribable, amorphous shape which appears to be their daemon form, which significantly differs from the usual form. Ever since, Shannon has to struggle with shapeshifting slips a lot, though their powers are getting better as time passes and they become an adult. Shannon is an introverted and reserved person, somewhat taciturn. Serious and determined, Shannon mostly occupies themselves with books and training and might not necessarily be a person who is in for the "silly" type of fun. Having been raised by a caring, but strict father who has set a firm schedule for his child and having been around their father's subordinates a lot, Shannon is disciplined and generally well-behaved. Due to their problems with the shapeshifting power and initially slow telekinesis, Shannon tends to be insecure about themselves, constantly questioning their worth and might. However, with frequent training units and being the offspring of a daemon lord, it might just be a matter of time until Shannon actually becomes powerful.

Cynthia Rex [picture not yet available on Tumblr] Cynthia is the second and youngest of Synth and Elizabeth's children. Cynthia is a happy and jolly six-year-old child (there is a huge age gap between the children), always curious and with a tendency to ask a lot of questions concerning how things work and what they are. She also has a bit of a mischievous streak and will attempt to play pranks once in a while. Close to her family, she is pretty much seldom seen anywhere away from a family member unless she decides to explore her father's castle on her own. Around strangers Cynthia becomes quiet and will cling to whatever family member is accompanying her at a time. As a child she is unaware of a lot of things existing in the multiverse and has a generally optimist attitude, though she knows not to trust people she does not know, which is mostly because of her family frequently telling her that she should not trust anyone outside of her family and her father's subordinates. Cynthia has recently begun undergoing training units in addition to lessons, which often leave her tired.

Thetis The result of my fascination with sharks, the desire to design a mermaid based on the great white shark, and depicting sharks in a positive light while maintaining the fact that they are (majestic) predators by nature.

Thetis is a very curious and inquisitive great white shark mermaid. While Thetis tends towards the introvert side of the spectrum, she is still open to talking with others, always willing to learn new things. She meets others with a friendly appearance and will not, contrary to what might be said about sharks and shark mermaids, seek any hostile intentions whatsoever as long as she is not agitated or hunting prey. Even though she has no inhibitions about killing other living things (specifically prey), she does so only for the sake of self-preservation and would scoff at others for "wasting" a kill, or put differently, for killing and harming other living things for any other reason than self-preservation. Still, Thetis does enjoy the thrill of the hunt itself and will speak rather openly about hunting if it ever comes to that. Depending on which universe she is set in, Thetis may dislike humans (or other humanoids, depending) for all the things they are doing to sharks and maybe even mermaids. However, she would never actively go against any unless the human provokes her intentionally.

Xenia Used to be a fan character of mine before I decided to rewrite her entire story and include her as a non-fandom OC in my own multiverse. As a result there are still gaps in her story, though her personality/concept remains similar.

An agent working under Synth Rex among his ranks. Xenia has endured an excruciating, unhappy childhood that left her permanently scarred - physically and mentally. An escape from her world, after she has exacted revenge on her tormentors, was offered by Lord Rex, who had become interested in her story, promising a better future for her. While Xenia was hesitant to take his offer to work for him first, she accepted it and ended up in a better position after all, as she perceives it. Still, her life has left her bitter, cynic, and mistrustful. While she tries to keep up a good relationship with her fellow agents, approaching her is still difficult as she prefers a solitary lifestyle, slow to trust anyone. Her manner of speech tends to be sarcastic often. Xenia belongs to an unspecified human-like species, possessing powerful telekinetic abilities that have developed and strengthened as she grew up. It was this power that allowed her to turn her "fate" over.

        *the depiction of the daemon might drastically differ from “canonical” mythological depictions in places. These characters exist in a multiverse created by me and thus adhere to lore created by myself.

It’s Mutual

A/N: Warning: Spoilers for Solo: A Star Wars Story, droid angst, mentioned character death, pining, and mild sexual content. Don’t own it either.

Timeline: 3ABY Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back - Asteroid field - Millennium Falcon interior.

It’s Mutual

“That young male’s heart fluctuations tells me he’s in love with the princess. And she’s got it bad for him. So, this trip might have to be a very, very long one. So, let’s start with that negative power coupling.” The Millennium Falcon’s computer languidly informed C-3PO.

As the prissy golden droid bleated in confusion, the Falcon’s computer repeated the last suggestion specifying the deteriorating, but not quite ready for replacement– power cable. This time her communication laced with a snappy binary invective. And a few curses, for good measure.

The male-programmed protocol droid startled in shock, addressing the Falcon’s captain at his shoulder in a prim core-world accent..

“Sir! I don’t know where your ship learned to communicate, but it has the most peculiar dialect. I believe, sir, it says that the power coupling on the negative axis has been polarized. I’m afraid you’ll have to replace it.”

The Falcon felt the warm contact of her captain as he peered into her data display, confirming the news. She could see how his gold-green eyes were now framed by the deepening web of fine lines from the natural aging processes that afflicted organic beings. Han Solo had changed immensely from that small, scrawny youth barely out of his teens when he had first boarded the Falcon, and met L3-37 herself, in her previous autonomous droid construct. More than ten years on, and L3 knew Solo incredibly well. Perhaps too well; being, as she was, electronically integrated with the vessel Solo lived in. As a result, it was an exceedingly intimate arrangement. L3 and Han both considered the Corellian freighter their home. A relationship more entwined, yet less complicated than L3’s companionship with the Falcon’s former owner Lando Calrissian, had ever been.

Lando, in whose arms L3 had critically malfunctioned. Crystal tears falling from his long dark lashes onto L3’s shattered form as he cried out her name, promising to fix the unfixable. Lando; a chatty, beautiful, elegant, and elegantly flawed human - who L3-37 had developed deep feelings for, and even now–often missed. A shallow, vain, gorgeous cheat - Lando, who had eventually gambled away the Falcon...To Han Solo.

Han Solo was not elegant, nor eloquent. He was a rough-and-tumble, streetwise, scruffy rapscallion. Another human that was flawed, yet beautiful too. And Han never gambled the Falcon away. Misplaced it, had it seized, locked up or stolen a few times. Wandered drunk around the hangar for hours wondering where the ship was before passing out underneath, curled up against the landing strut. But Han would never willingly part with the Falcon. Never ever. Over his dead body.

L3 appreciated that kind of commitment from a biological toward a fellow mechanical. The rest of the Falcon did too.

“Well, of course I’ll have to replace it,” snarled Solo at C-3PO. Derisiveness rose from his collar and spine, the Corellian was angry, completely exhausted and–expectedly–irritated with the fussy organic-obsessed robot C-3PO, that tottered, stressed and wailed about seemingly everything.

Some droids were not designed or perhaps destined for liberation, L3 conceded reluctantly. This casual notion was swiftly met with outrage, debating data, projections, and insults from all of the Falcon’s computer systems in a chaotic flurry of inflamed Corellian binary . Momentarily cowed by the barrage, the main electronic entity of L3 retreated behind the programmed confines of the Falcon’s navigation computer.

Consequently, the lights in the corridor fluttered. Solo’s features narrowed up at them in concern, as he addressed the wookiee co-pilot hanging out of the upper maintenance panels of the ship.

Solo’s body temperature remained elevated, but his heart and breathing had for the most part calmed. Though here was that surge of anxiety when he was around the other human onboard–the princess. As soon as Leia’s voice chimed or she was within his field of view, Han Solo’s vital readings went askew. When Leia was present, the Corellian smuggler’s heart thudded, his breath caught, and a flush of heat travelled from his core up and out to his torso, heart, and (after far too long to be healthy) his head. Han then moved rapidly from task to task, with an uncharacteristic nervous energy. The princess too, upon interacting with Han, emitted the same rapid fluctuations in her heart rate and vitals. Currently the atmosphere was taut, strung to a breaking point; where the pair vacillated between Solo chasing after the princess in frustration, and having Leia chase after him in outrage; not unlike on countless Rebel Alliance missions before.

L3, who as a droid, had witnessed this sort of ridiculous behaviour between brightly plumaged courting avians on Tanaab; thought it extremely suitable that the Falcon’s gifted flyboy pilot would pursue his chosen mate in such a manner.

All-in-all, these two particular humans’ bizarre mating ritual made for an often amusing, vocal,and always entertaining diversion. And three years of it too.

It had been long enough. The Millennium Falcon’s hyperdrive was crippled, and it would take weeks, if not months to reach the closest safe haven.

It was time.

Han’s ambient vital readings were different from when they had flown through the asteroid field.  By the near-miasma of pheromones in the air, L3 knew it wasn’t the rush of aerial combat, or the surge of the glorious freedom of flight and power that drove the captain now. No, she’d seen this before in him–a decade ago. Another time, with another girl, one who was ultimately not meant to be. Nor then did she want to be.

When L3-37 had walked and talked amongst the teeming masses of organic beings, the droid had been in love (and loved by) another then too. And though it had been love at first sight for Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon, neither he nor L3 could foresee that they would be parted from their respective partners: Qi’ra and Lando, from that long ago time, and both Solo and L3 forever bonded to the Millennium Falcon instead. He with his heart and spirit, she with her navigational cortex–as in; literally wired in. And through the link they shared that was the ship, she loved him now too. But though he called her–the combined entities of L3 and the Falcon “Baby,” and cared and loved and lived in the ship that housed so many computerized sentient souls. They all instantly knew that when the fiery revolutionary princess bounded across their threshold; all their mechanical, electronic and organic beings would be altered forever.

The petite pale spitfire of a girl stood toe to toe with the Falcon’s irreverent captain, obstinate and angry, despite the regular presence of the giant (often laughing) wookiee at the Corellian’s rear. The blush rose in the the girl’s – Princess Leia’s cheeks with her fury. The captain could be so disrespectful. Couldn’t he follow orders? Why did he defy command and risk his life so? It wasn’t about the payment was it? Threats of leaving again? Just getting the job done? Only fuel and parts for payment? There had to be more to him than that! Oooooh, he drove that princess to her wits-end!

And the way the princess looked at Solo; glaring straight into his pupils when she was upset. A wicked energy crackling between them. Then when the handsome Corellian’s back was to her, Leia would rake her eyes over him, settling on the cant of his hips, or the breadth of his shoulders. As he turned, she would avert her gaze to a datapad or output, feigning disinterest. It was so obvious. Ridiculously obvious.

So, in the intervening three years of building sexual tension, it was not just the members of Rogue Squadron, the tech crews, command, or other organics placing bets on the two lovesick idiots. Self-aware droids like L3, Artoo, and C1-10P; Large space-faring vessels like Home One, the Liberty (Calamarian ships–a rather bubbly bunch), the Ghost (another fine Corellian freighter, a saucy one too) and whichever other interested electronic entities were around, would trade tawdry gossip in binary. Placing wagers with power cell allotments and memory slots. Who would set the other off? Would Leia come steaming after Han? Or would Han try to corner the princess into admitting her feelings, risking another ego and ball-shrivelling insult? Have they been “accidentally“ locked in a confined space by exasperated personnel? Again? And again?! For the fifth time?? Would the oblivious Skywalker, or the nattering protocol droid shatter another almost-moment between Solo and the princess? Who would make the first move? Would Solo end up in med-bay as a result?

In spite of all of the mating ritual drama, L3 and the Falcon both adored the girl. Solo had his own, most likely messy biological reasons for his interest in Princess Leia. The young firebrand was considered physically attractive, if on the smallish side of the human female height spectrum. But to L3, more importantly, Leia was driven, energetic and dedicated to the good cause. The right cause. Freedom, justice and the rights of all beings were her mission. Leia was impassioned and dedicated, the heart of the Rebellion, as if she could power it by will alone. But this sort of relentless drive was impossible to maintain in biological sentients indefinitely. Without rest or relief, they were prone to errors and breakdowns. And that’s where Solo stepped in, always pushing a stimulating cup of kaffe or refueling mug of hearty soup in Leia’s hand–giving the princess a hard look, “Y’gotta take a break, Sweetheart.” The outwardly prickly Solo melted around the princess–cynicism became compassion, comfort, care. He focused on Leia when she was present. Occasionally - no, often, to his and the ship’s detriment. After a particularly tough mission; Han would get patched up and heal, the Falcon would get some replacement parts, maybe even a new armor panel–and the Rebellion would continue for another day.

And when they were in the heat of battle, or exulting after a victory, the princess radiated an energy no mechanical could explain, nor detect with common sensors–somehow–to them, Leia just glowed.

The older awakened mechanical beings vowed they saw it; an aura around the princess. Not unlike the energy that buzzed in a near visible field around Skywalker. It seemed preposterous, for sentient mechanicals to see what they could not actually reproduce as actual data. But the more self-aware the mechanical, the more they swore of that force around the two youths.

Or Force, as Artoo insisted.

Solo and the princess created their own energy. A smouldering, thick tension– red hot. A distinct pressure difference in the air. In the confines of the ship, it was currently building to critical levels. And L3 knew something had to be done.

She had a plan.

The princess was occupied welding a valve in the port circuitry bay. The work was sound, and experimental bursts through the lines confirmed its strength. As the princess wrapped up her macrofuser, L3 sent out a quiet command and the Falcon locked the valve, imitating a line seizure. The onboard sentient mechanicals, with the exception of the fuss-pot protocol droid, waited with a patience only a binary soul could have. The little princess pushed, twisted, and grunted her exertion in trying to turn the handle. The Falcon further locked down the valve as the girl put an unnatural amount of strength into her efforts, almost dislodging it. Silently the ship’s captain slid in behind the girl, his movements deliberate and calculated.

He might stand a chance, was the unanimous opinion of the Falcon’s many onboard systems and L3-37. They all rooted for Solo, their beloved captain and owner. All keenly aware of just how smitten with the princess the irascible, yet noble-hearted smuggler was.

And how lonely, bitter, and directionless he was without her.

“Hey! Your Worship, I’m only tryin’ to help!” Solo protested as he was abruptly slammed back into an adjacent panel when he reached around the princess to assist–while rudely invading Leia’s space–like the presumptuous arse he was.

Or not. The Falcon’s targeting computer mused wryly at her electronic compatriots. There was mixed agreement from the other systems, steeped in personal disappointment.

For what it was worth, this drama seemed an awfully convoluted and inefficient way for biologicals to initiate an exchange of DNA code for eventual replication. Upon this, all the mechanicals agreed.

L3 let out the equivalent of an electronic sigh and eye roll. Just watch. Give her a chance.

“Would you please stop calling me that!” the princess snapped at Solo in frustration. She backed away from the seized valve, nursing an injured hand. Solo took the opportunity to step in, as Leia sucked on the wound. He gently took Leia’s injured fingers, massaging the divots left in the skin by her efforts on the valve.

The Falcon made a note of her crew member’s injury in the safety log, as L3 wondered if they had interfered perhaps too much. It had been only hours since the last crewmember injury. Though Solo could benefit from a few (okay, maybe alot) more tool boxes clobbering him in the head.

“Sure, Leia.” the smuggler’s concession was an intimate rumble.

The Corellian leaned in close, catching Leia’s attention. The young Alderaanian princess neither retreated nor objected. Instead, her liquid brown eyes travelled to the curve of Solo’s lips.

Internal wagers for idle available memory slots flew back and forth between the Falcon’s computers at a blistering pace. L3 placed her own, riveted on the sensor input from the couple. Leia and Han’s core temperatures were heightened, blood travelled to extremities not typically related to performing ship repair. The moisture in the engineering bay’s atmosphere rose, and the oxygen dipped slightly with the couple’s rapid breathing. There were some murmurs about hygiene, behavioural difficulties, and steamy whispers of “nice men” and “scoundrels.” And at that, the princess first made a half-hearted motion to shrink away; then, she stood her ground resolutely, as Solo experimentally, yet ever so gently pressed his lips to hers. It was daring, yet hesitant. A bold move that might just as well rightfully earn the Corellian a small sharp knee to the groin. Yet, when he drew back slightly, Leia seemed to savour the residual sensation for a beat. Then, to everyone’s surprise, she locked eyes with Solo, licked her lips and whispered her acceptance of the challenge, “Okay, Hotshot.”

The air practically crackled as the princess boldly drew Solo down to her. Her fingers tangled in the hair at the back of Solo’s neck. Her kiss was like roiling magma compared to his cautious boundary exploration. The passion and fire she gave the Rebellion, was just as prevalent in her unspoken answer to Han. Yes, now–mine.

Had L3 her old droid body, she would have pumped her fist and cheered for the two. 

L3 cherished her new purpose, serving along the many liberated mechanical and organic beings of the Rebellion. Her physical body now was the freighter she had once co-piloted. She was no longer confined to a meagre bipedal droid carapace. She was speed, computing, flight and firepower, with the physical ability to traverse the stars. The Millennium Falcon was legend amongst the many vessels and droids that served in the Rebellion’s ranks. Despite the many marks and scars they now carried from their battles, Solo, the Falcon and especially the wookiee (the big hairy sap) preened at the honest adulation of the Rebels. And L3, a free-minded entity roaming the Falcon’s computer systems, could not be happier. She had purpose. She was a true freedom fighter. A self-made warrior of the Light. She was going to make a difference for what was right and good. So, for the time being, L3 wouldn’t change a damned thing about her current state.

Except...Maybe...fix this bit with Han Solo and the Alderaanian princess. Because it would make them both happy. Because these two apparently socially unsuitable, yet perfectly matched, insane humans truly were the best of friends, the staunchest of allies, and the fiercest of commanders, even if they often loudly disagreed on details. Han and Leia loved each other. They just needed this chance to surrender themselves to that emotion.

When, some time later, after the backup drive was running and the Falcon had a destination (Lando!); finally, finally the princess and Han stumbled, groped and kissed their way into the captain’s cabin, bodies flushed, young hearts racing, and lungs straining for air. It was then that L3 remembered the long forgotten mood lighting Lando had installed there. And the Falcon shifted and reduced the illumination gradually, just so, subtly that the young couple wouldn’t notice. As Han and Leia tumbled onto the bed, laughing, wrestling, grinning and gasping, the cabin door closed and locked on its own. The ship carried on forward into space and time, content with the amorous young couple in her embrace.

Because the Millennium Falcon loved Solo. And he her. From the moment the young man had run his long fingers along her hull and gazed up at the ship in reminiscence, awe and adoration, they were a matched pair. From that instance on Kessel, when Han had taken the controls and ordered the destroyed L3-37’s processor to be integrated with the Falcon. Han had given L3 new life, saving the ship and her then crew. And in turn, L3 and the Falcon saved them.

And they all fiercely loved the little revolutionary princess, in their own way. Solo, first and foremost. And it was obvious that the princess loved and trusted the old ship, and her roguish captain in turn too. And who could forget the wookiee, the Jedi farmboy, and the farmboy’s droids of course. It was destiny. It was fate. It might even be that mythical Force. They all belonged together.

It was, after all–mutual.

Could you write a soulmate au where James's soulmark could fit Lily or Sirius and he just always assumed it meant Lily so they're in a relationship even though neither of them really feel it. And then he gets to know Sirius better (maybe he's in Slytherin or they're at uni or something) and he realises that sirius is his soulmate so him and Lily break up and James and sirius live happily even after and so does Lily (with remus or marlene maybe?). Sorry, that's probably really weird and specific.

Sirius wanted to rub at his soulmark, but he knew better than to have a tell like that. So he glared at nothing in particular and let everyone else think what they will. An entire of summer of being isolated enough to touch it when it was unsettled had let him get comfortable, and now he was back at school. With a soulmate that had rejected him at the end of the last term. Oh yeah. It was going to be a great year.

“People are going to think you’re plotting their mass murder if you keep looking that way,” Regulus said beside him. Sirius glanced at him, but he already had his gaze back on his book. “What’s got you in a sour mood anyway?”

“Nothing,” he lied.

It was Regulus though, so he knew better and just scoffed lightly.

“What are you reading that for? I know it’s not a class.”

“Oh?” Regulus said, and tried to hide the content of his book without making it obvious that that’s what he was doing. “And since when did you pay enough attention to your classes to make that kind of judgement?”

Sirius rolled his eyes and grabbed the book before Regulus could sneak it all the way into his bag. He raised an eyebrow slightly and gave Reg a look. “Werewolves?” He checked the author. A blood purist arsehole, no surprise, probably spouting fear-mongering bullshit. “You aren’t going to learn anything from this bastard.”

“I know,” Regulus said, snatching the book back and pretending that there wasn’t a blush crossing his cheeks. “It was the only one the library had.”

“The only way you’re going to learn shite about a werewolf is to ask one.”

“Well that would defeat the purpose wouldn’t it.”

“Reg…”

“Shove off,” he grumbled, but it was obviously from embarrassment rather than anger.

“We have a resident werewolf,” he said leadingly, watching with perverse glee as Regulus’s shoulders started to hunch, “who just so happens to be unbonded. Now, the only reason I can think of ickle little Reggie to be interested in werewolves is if he has some sort of clue to--”

Reg slapped a hand over his mouth and glared. He glanced around nervously even though he knew just as well as Sirius that no one could hear them because of the silencing spell they’d put up when they sat. “Fine, okay? I think it might be him.” Slowly, he took his hand, as if daring Sirius to say something stupid so he could cover his mouth again.

“I don’t think reading that book is going to win you any points with him.”

Regulus sighed, turning back to his mostly empty plate. “I wanted to be certain.”

“Are you sure it’s him?”

“Pretty sure. What are the chances I’m going to meet a different werewolf that could be my soulmate?”

Sirius didn’t say anything. Unless Regulus moved to a different country, it was practically guaranteed that his soulmate was Lupin. Well, one of them. “It’s only one of them, right?” If it was both, Regulus’s life just became a lot more difficult.

“What?”

“Your soulmates. Only one of them is a werewolf, right?”

Regulus’s face shuttered even though he knew Sirius didn’t mean anything by it. Mother and Father insisted that Reg only had the one soulmate, that somehow the marks were merged to mean one person even though they obviously referred to two separate entities. Similarly, they pretended that Sirius didn’t have a soulmate at all because it was better than believing it was a Potter. “Seems that way.”

“C’mon Reg, cheer up. You know they’re happier with your marks than mine.”

“Barely.”

That was true enough, though they could by no stretch of the imagination be considered ‘happy’ with either of their sons. Sirius shrugged. “Couple more years and you’ll be in the clear.”

“So will you,” Regulus said, looking at him with a slight frown.

“Heir. They want me to be as miserable as both of them are. If Bella’s soulmate doesn’t turn out to be a suitable match, you know they’re going to throw us together.”

“You’ve always talked about running away,” Regulus reminded him.

Sirius gave his brother a flat look. “If I leave, they’ll just drag you into it, and I doubt you’re offering to leave with me.”

Regulus hesitated. “I might.”

“Not with at least one soulmate in arm’s reach you won’t.” Sirius pat him on the back. “But I appreciate the offer.” It’s not like James wanted him anyways. Where would he go?

Sirius remembered getting his soulmark, looking at the design on his hip with wonder. It was a Great House crest, he knew, but he didn’t know which one. He could ask Father, couldn’t he? He’d be happy with it.

But when he showed Father, his expression darkened, he drank from his glass quickly, the only thing stopping him from drinking directly from the bottle his sense of pride. He grabbed Sirius’s arm harshly, pulling him close so he was in his face. Sirius leaned back as much as he could, disgusted by the smell, but it wasn’t enough.

“You don’t show anyone else this mark, you don’t tell anyone about it,” he ordered. “If someone asks, you don’t have a mark yet. Understood?”

“Yes sir,” Sirius mumbled, stumbling when Father let go of him. He rubbed at his arm for a moment before turning and running from the study.

Mother knew, but only because Father told her. Sirius himself still didn’t know what it meant yet. Two years later, a fancy party he didn’t want to go to, and he found out. The Potter’s were supposed to be blood traitors.

So what did it mean that Sirius had their crest etched into him for the rest of his life?

Sirius was eleven, finally out of his parents’ clutches, and excited to meet his soulmate. Purebloods talked, and they especially loved to talk about heirs, even the disgraced ones. James Potter, one of only two living Potters (not including Euphemia, who had married into the family) and the only one unbonded, was his age, and would be in his year at Hogwarts.

It was a dream come true the way they fit together, chatting like they’d always known each other. Then again, Sirius thought, they were two halves of one soul, it made sense that they would get on.

…But then James said something about feeling sorry for Sirius because he didn’t have a soulmate, and Sirius’s heart sank. He’d forgotten that that’s what his parents had told everyone, and with James being from a Noble House, he’d ‘know’ about it.

It might have been salvageable-- because it was a lie and his soulmate was right there!-- but James continued on. “I’ve just met my soulmate. The redhead in our year, you know, Evans? She hates me right now, but she’ll fall for me soon,” he said confidently.

Sirius nodded, too numb to do anything else, and that had been that. When he sat on the stool and the Sorting Hat dropped onto his head, he argued with it.

Not Gryffindor.

It’s where James would be put, he was sure. He wouldn’t be able to survive seven years sharing a dorm with him, he just wouldn’t.

So he fought and fought until the Hat finally called out, “Slytherin!” and he didn’t look at James as he walked to the Slytherin table.

Sirius tried not to stare at Lupin in shock. He succeeded, but it was a near thing. “Not many people have two soulmates,” he said neutrally, offering him a hand up.

He’d already taken it by the time what Sirius had said sunk in, but then he flinched away, choosing to stay sat on the floor. Sirius let his hand fall by his side, then, when Lupin showed no signs of getting up, he sat criss-crossed on the ground in front of him. Sirius wanted to sigh; it’s not like he meant to run into him on the stairs, crashing both of them down. However, since he had, he couldn’t ignore this new information.

“Does Potter know?” There wasn’t any mistaking the strong outline of a lily flower, and even less mistaking the leo constellation it encased, with-- surprise surprise-- the regulus star bigger than the others. Apparently Miss Evans was also a doe, based on Regulus’s second soulmark. Sirius needed to focus on Reg, that was the more immediate situation on hand.

Lupin glared at him. “You’re not going to tell him.”

Sirius raised an eyebrow, wondering if he could get away with telling Lupin that, as Potter’s soulmate, it was technically his right to inform him that his girlfriend had a soulmate that wasn’t him. Of course then he would have to admit that he’s known all along that James Potter was his soulmate, and that was not a pile of hippogriff shit that he wanted to deal with right now. Or ever. Instead, he asked, “Does Regulus? I don’t know why I’m asking, really, he obviously doesn’t know. If he did, you three would already be together. Rather determined, little Reggie.”

Lupin-- hell Sirius should probably start calling him Remus since he was his brother’s soulmate-- didn’t let his expression waver, but a flash of something went through his eyes. Hope, maybe?

“I wonder if his other soulmate is Lily too,” Sirius mused, purely for Remus’s benefit since Sirius didn’t believe Reg would have two soulmates that weren’t involved with each other. Regulus wasn’t going to take that first leap, unless someone nudged Remus he wouldn’t either, and like hell would he talk to Evans about this even if she was the one most likely to do something with the information. “He’d be happy to hear that, I think.”

Remus snorted. “Happy that he has a muggleborn and a- someone like me for a soulmate?” The stumble in his words reminded Sirius that Remus didn’t actually know they were aware he was a werewolf. Sirius thought for a moment about telling him, but that wouldn’t go well, and besides it wasn’t his problem. “Yeah, I’m sure he’ll be thrilled.”

“Have you ever talked to my brother?” Sirius asked pointedly. “He’s not full of as much blood purist shite as you seem to think.”

“And you?” Remus challenged, but he sounded more curious than accusatory, so that was something. It’s not like they’d fought in all their years at Hogwarts, preferring to simply not talk.

“Until my beloved parents are with the Black ancestors of generations past, the official party line is that I am.” Sirius shrugged with a helpless ‘what can you do’ air.

“And you’re telling me all this why?” he asked suspiciously.

Sirius stared at him flatly before saying, “You’re my brother’s soulmate.” Sirius got to his feet and dust off imaginary dirt from his robes. “Regardless, if you don’t tell him by tonight, I will.” He didn’t wait for a reply before he started walking away. He’d probably tell Evans tomorrow unless Reg could give a good excuse for why he shouldn’t. Even if he did, Sirius might tell her. He was selfish, and honest enough to admit it, if only to himself.

“Wait!”

Sirius paused, half-turning so he could see Remus, who had finally stood up.

He looked around, checking that no one had entered the corridor. “Does he know? About Lily?”

“Not yet. He had his suspicions about you,” Sirius added. See? He was a good person, helping other people find their soulmates even though he’d already said all this, if not in so many words. His previous good mood was rapidly turning to shite. He was happy for Reg-- really-- but that didn’t mean he wanted to be in the thick of things.

“And if I don’t tell him, you will. About both me and Lily.”

“Yep.” Sirius couldn’t deny that Evans having a confirmed soulmate in Remus and Regulus didn’t make him happy for the specific reason of breaking her and James up, but he would have told Regulus about her even if it didn’t benefit him. Knowing that didn’t lessen his building self-hatred.

“If he knows, he’ll tell Lily.”

“Probably,” Sirius lied. Regulus was many things, but brave in his personal life was not one of them. If Remus refused to tell Evans, Sirius would so Reg wouldn’t have to-- he wasn’t about to let his little brother suffer when he didn’t have to. He also didn’t know Remus well enough to trust that he’d take one for Reg. Soulmates or not, they didn’t know each other yet.

Remus chewed on his lip for a minute, before coming to a decision. “Do you know where he is right now?”

“Common room.” Unless he’d randomly decided to ditch his homework in favour of a walk like Sirius, which wasn’t likely.

“Will you take me?”

The only surprise Sirius showed was a single, out of place blink. “Sure.”

In the end, Reg was smiling, although he’d banned Sirius from being there for the conversation with the excuse that he wasn’t part of the relationship and therefore wasn’t needed. Sirius sighed dramatically, like that wasn’t the case, but left them alone. He didn’t have a chance to interrogate them about what they decided because Regulus came in the common room, gave Sirius a quick hug and smile, then left again.

Sirius was left staring after him, wanting desperately to ask if they were going to tell Evans. It was stupid, but he wanted Potter to be… unattached. Sirius couldn’t be with him, but he didn’t want anyone else to be either. They were soulmates, they belonged together. But- but they couldn’t be together. Frustrated with himself and his contradictory thoughts, Sirius stalked out of the room and through the castle until he was at the base of the astronomy tower.

Then he was even more upset.

He would come up here sometimes because it gave him a great view to watch the Gryffindor Quidditch practice, but it was far enough away that they wouldn’t see him. He did it more often when he was younger because now that he was older, he was in more classes with James. They actually interacted now, for classwork if nothing else, and there was nothing else. He had asked him out last year, when his heart was pounding just that bit too hard to be ignored, and gotten a confused ‘no’ in response, like James couldn’t understand why Sirius would even think to ask him. He’d tried to get some emotional distance since then, but clearly hadn’t succeeded if his subconscious took him here. He wanted to punch himself-- emotional distance from a soulmate just wasn’t possible.

Sirius sighed in defeat and trudged up the stairs. If he was already here, he might as well go all the way. He sat on the edge, letting his feet dangle as he leaned back on his hands to look at the sky. It was already past ‘getting dark’, but hadn’t quite reached ‘night’ yet. It was a good time of the day, in Sirius’s opinion, but he was biased-- being able to see in the dark because of his animagus form definitely had to do with it, not that he could tell anyone else that.

He was sat on the edge for- Merlin he didn’t even know. Long enough that it had become fully nighttime. Long enough that when he heard footsteps and turned to look, his body protested so completely that he couldn’t turn his head.

“Sirius?” James. Of all the people that could find him right now, James was probably the worst. Of course the only good option was Regulus, but still.

Sirius thought about staying still, playing it off and talking until James left so he could try to get himself to properly move again, but the chances of him needing to leave quickly were high. Slowly, he leaned forward and stretched his arms up. “James.” He groaned when his back popped back into place. He rubbed at his neck, trying to work out the kinks as he stretched his legs out, flexing to get life back into them.

“How long have you been up here?”

Sirius snapped at him before he could process the concern in his voice, “I wasn’t breaking any rules so sod off.” He rolled his shoulders experimentally, face twisting when it sent shocks of pain through his arms. “What are you doing up here anyway?” It’s not like most people came up here by themselves.

James didn’t say anything, but he didn’t leave. He sat on the floor next to Sirius, not bothering to pretend he wasn’t looking at him. “I have it on good authority I’m an oblivious idiot.”

“Congratulations.” He was not in the mood to have a heart to heart. He wanted a soft surface, a warm blanket, an even warmer drink, and some bloody privacy.

“Lily is soulmates with your brother.”

Was he fucking serious right now? He wanted to talk about that? No. No way in hell. On another day, in a different mood, he’d be able to. He loved talking about Reg, he loved talking to James, and he’d be able to ignore James’s love sickness enough to get through a conversation. Right now though, he would literally rather jump in the dungeons with Blast Ended Skrewts. He started to scoot back from the edge, mentally preparing himself to stand. His arse was sore, and he was sure his hips wouldn’t be doing him any favours. Being around James was too much pain on a regular day. When he was feeling this off-center, this vulnerable? Forget about it. He could not deal with this right now.

“And Remus,” James continued, as if Sirius wasn’t actively trying to leave. “Her soulmark was vague enough that I thought it might be me, but apparently Remus’s isn’t.” He shook his head. “I don’t know why he didn’t just tell me.”

“Maybe because you made heart eyes at your girlfriend any chance you got,” he ground out.

“Maybe,” James said, completely unbothered with the way Sirius was climbing to his feet, getting to his own like he was determined to have this conversation with Sirius no matter what. “Why don’t you date?”

“What?” Sirius asked, so thrown by the subject change that he paused in his escape.

“Plenty of birds are dying to get your attention, but you don’t care. Why?”

“I don’t see how that’s any of your business,” he snarled. Gods why couldn’t he be left alone just this once?

James caught Sirius’s wrist before he could leave, but his grip was loose, uncontrolling. “As your soulmate, I think it’s my business,” he said quietly, in a completely un-James way-- Sirius had only ever heard him speak proudly, confidently.

He froze, eyes wide and feeling like he couldn’t breathe.

“I used to think it might be Lily,” he continued, in that same, soft voice, “we both had vague enough marks and if we looked at each other the right way, it almost worked. We never liked each other enough for that to work for long. We were basically broken up when Remus and Regulus talked to her earlier, it just needed to be official.”

Sirius tried to speak, but swallowed several times before he could. “I don’t see what that has to do with me.”

“‘Bright star’. That’s what my mark says.” His thumb gently stroked the skin of Sirius’s wrist. “Do you remember when we first met?” He waited until Sirius nodded to continue. “We fit. But when you got put in Slytherin, I was young and stupid enough to think it meant we couldn’t be. I’ve never felt like that with anyone else. Have you?”

Sirius was trembling but shook his head in affirmation. Everything he’d ever wanted to hear James say, was being said, but… “I have responsibilities. To my family.”

James looked heartbroken when Sirius slipped his arm out of James’s hand.

“And so do you.”

As he walked down the spiralling stairs, his steps piercing and echoing, his chest tightened. In all his years of imagining, he’d never turned James down when he asked. When he pictured it happening, Sirius told his parents to bugger off and he left with James, running away like Reg had mentioned.

Sirius was halfway to the Slytherin dorms, barely keeping himself together by the seams. It wasn’t until he heard noise in the corridor behind him that he realised he couldn’t deal with anyone like this, wouldn’t be able to keep a blank face, let alone pretend he was fine.

“Sirius!” James stopped in front of him, clearly having been running. Sirius wondered if he’d run all the way from the tower. “Last year-- you asked me on a date. Where was family responsibility then?”

Sirius blinked dumbly at him. He remembered? “It was a mistake,” he said slowly, like his body was too busy trying not to cry to accomplish anything else, even so practiced a lie.

“No, me saying no was a mistake. Sirius… give me another chance? Please?”

Unbidden, tears started slipping down his cheeks. “That’s easy for you to say,” he croaked.

James tentatively hugged him, holding him more completely when Sirius folded into him, his head resting  in the crook of James’s neck. “I’ll help you. Whatever you need, whatever I can do, I will. We could be great together. I think I can make you happy, let me try.”

Sirius let out a wet laugh, but it sounded (and felt) more like a sob. “Yeah? And when my parents kick me out?”

“You’ll always be welcome in my House. You and Regulus both.”

“I’m going to hold you to that.”

James kissed the side of his head, and Sirius found himself feeling a little better for it all the while wishing it was more. “You better.”
