“propaganda me” is probably that best phrasing of anything ever. and this is also my favorite topic of propaganda. so yes. ofc.

probably the #1 reason to read the dreamer trilogy is to get More of the raven cycle universe. if you love ronan lynch and you want to see him grow (and fuck up) and change (and fuck up) this is THE book series. adam parrish in all his glory is also heavily featured. because who is ronan without adam (that’s a question that will be answered in these books!). and my beautiful, baby boy declan (i’m biased it’s okay) is Given A Voice finally. plus you meet some new Killer character. cough cough hennessy. cough cough jordan. cough cough carmen. cough cough lilliana. (so many showstopping female characters)

my caveat to all of this, is yes, it is different than the raven cycle. in like the most beautiful, necessary way. (i love trc with my whole heart so i’m not saying this will any malice). i’ve said this before and i’ll say it again (propaganda at its finest) the dreamer trilogy is an embodiment of what young adulthood is — what moving away from childhood Feels Like. trc is very teenage, it’s very big and grand and everything is So important (but it’s also silly because they’re 16/17 year olds), the dreamer trilogy has a tone shift but it’s So Necessary. because there is a tone shift from childhood to the early years of adulthood. things feel smaller, and more difficult, and somehow more confusing, but it’s THE PAY OFF that matters the most (because yes, we’re building Healthy, strong relationships on this dysfunctional family).

personally i LOVE the exploration of dreaming in the series and all the various metaphors that can be applied to the concept. i’ve talked Extensively about dreaming as a metaphor for chronic illness and i think going into the series with that lens would make for a really cool and interesting experience.

the dreamer trilogy at its core is this baller, action packed (but also sad) series that’s going to explode your brain and cause you to question your sanity. and i think the true testament to this series is that despite Sobbing upon finishing it (ending was not even sad, it was just the end of an era), i Immediately wanted to reread. because there’s so much Content, so much Intrigue, so Much To Unpack.

tl;dr ronan lynch is a gay icon throughout, read it read it read it.

yeah fuck it i'm making this its own post. basically very long winded (but still not as extensively detailed as i'd like) thoughts on adam & ronan (sort of) & whelk & noah

i remember reading the raven boys back in 2014 (ten years of rot in my brain!) and being sooo disappointed that there was basically zero fandom interest in whelk & noah beyond "omg whelk is evil and awful and terrible, poor baby noah!" when that is not the narrative surrounding them, not really. i feel it's a disservice to both of their characters to do that, especially noah's:

there is nuance there. there are implications. like... it's ALL about the implications!!! we basically see nothing of whelk and noah beyond what's left after the carnage. and it's a theme in trc for characters to have irreparably changed before we ever meet them (gansey, ronan, whelk, noah). we don't know what they were actually like when noah was alive, when they were best friends. when they were tight as ticks.

what we do know is this: whelk was noah's gansey. whelk was cheating on his own girlfriend with noah's, which is a shitty thing to do for sure, but something we also have zero context for. we also don't know how true it is, because whelk has such a self-inflicted warped view of his past. he keeps rewriting his own memories to think lesser of noah, because his absence hurts that much! we know they were best friends, the same way adam & ronan are best friends with gansey. we know they did everything together

okay, changing gears a little.

i'll paste the part where adam is possessed, sorry for the amount of screenshots:

compare this to whelk's recollection of killing noah, and the effects it had on him:

"red lines streaked in the corners of his vision" "in whelk's head, unearthly voices hissed and whispered, words blurred and stretched together" "dictated by something larger and more powerful than himself" "somehow invited into his body through czerny's death" yes i am going there, yes i am making that point. i think, to some extent, barrington was possessed when he murdered his best friend. neither noah nor adam get their own pov while possessed, so...

i mean, time is a circle. noah needed to die so that gansey would live. noah had already died, gansey had already lived. it needed to happen, and so it would.

where the difference lies, i think, is in barrington's reaction to being possessed, versus adam/noah. for all that i'm arguing possession, i don't think barry's a stand up guy, he's a kid who's never had good role models (need i pull out the quotes about his shit parents) and who was raised by money and objects and reputation, which is why i think the possession worked. the idea to kill noah might've seemed like his own in the moment, an escalation of the situation he was already in, but unlike adam/noah there was no one to hold him back (not to mention barrington isn't as familiar with magic things(?) as they are). in that moment, whelk did truly lost it. he did the unforgivable. but there is no universe in which he doesn't.

for every time we see noah reenacting his death, we also need to imagine barrington whelk, seventeen and shivering. realizing as he's committing the act that he can't go back. perhaps realizing too that he couldn't stop his hands from gripping onto that skateboard, no matter how much he wanted to after that first hit. ("But instead, he remembered the sound Czerny made the first time he hit him.")

there's also adam in this. both him as a parallel to barrington, and as a strange sort of part of noah in a way. adam and noah interact the least out of the main group, arguably, but they too are a two-headed creature; they started out as one singular character and you can sort of tell. something something hands and eyes, something something sacrifice. ronan sort of parallels noah, in that he is not the same lively person we hear about, and he never will be that person again. both are cabeswater personified (although in different ways).

some more things:

"he once had been tight as ticks with his roommate czerny" "only whelk and czerny, treasure hunters and troublemakers" "it was possible that czerny's death wasn't for nothing after all" "[...] his days a ribbon floating aimlessly in water" (in relation to: "he had been a swimmer himself, once") "czerny, you're in a better place than me, i think" "whelk, standing in the wreckage of his life, didn't laugh this time" "the dry, half-eaten burger on the passenger seat / the first fast-food burger he'd had in seven years" "these days, when whelk was trying to comfort himself, he told himself that czerny was a sheep, but sometimes he slipped and remembered him as loyal instead" "[...] took him back to that moment, the skateboard in his hands, the sad question gasped in czerny's dying sounds "we were friends like —"

also, whelk dying in the same place noah did. these lines:

both noah and barrington look the same in the end. broken, rumpled, forgotten. noah's family will never know his bones were reburied outside of their family plot. whelk's mother, however distant she is, will never be notified that her son has died. i think in a way barrington died at the exact same time noah did; something something invited into his body through czerny's death.

basically what i'm getting at is, noah and barry could've been ronan and adam i think, had the circumstances been different. they never will be, but i think about it sometimes.

and there's so many more things i'm not even gonna TRY going into, like noah and whelk both being parallels to gansey (the three of them kings in their own right), or the disparity between whelk talking about czerny vs adele talking about noah, or whatever the fuck is going on with whelk's backstory in general (what's the deal with his mother? how the hell did he get the aglionby job? a random headcanon of mine is that his and noah's search for the ley line lead them to fox way, seven years before the events of the book, and that's partly why whelk refuses to give out his name to maura, because barrington is hard to forget, and easy to trace back)

there is so much to talk about here and i'm so peeved no one is doing it properly... why are we still talking about declan bringing his weekly girlfriend over to monmouth for no reason when we could be talking about whatever the fuck kinda soul-fate-destiny bullshit noah and whelk have!

1. Actually a personal fave because you know I love sad and this one is actually sad af. Jacobi attempts to build a life after the Hephaestus and everything he does keeps coming back to his lost team (particularly Kepler, he’s got a very fucked up messy relationship with Warren Kepler that he still doesn’t understand even after Kepler is dead)

2. The premise of this one was mostly Soap works for Shepherd before Price and is ordered to kill Graves and take his place as Shadow Company’s leader and take out the 141 so that there’s no loose ends. Don’t worry he doesn’t like doing it and I would say this one actually isn’t too bad on my angst scale

3. What can I say, I think about them way too much. I’ve literally created full lore for these funky little guys we saw in the books like twice and essentially it follows them from just before the timeline of The Raven Boys to after The Dream Thieves (I can’t say how far because it’s not done but I have little snippets of things they’re up to up until the fall after the Fourth of July). Anyway I love them and I think my little made up lore is cool

4. Idk bro, make a suggestion I guess, you all know what I do at this point I think or if you don’t you could probably make an educated guess based off the other three - I’ve been thinking of starting something either AFTG (again..) or maybe doing a marauders fic

What's the most tolerable clamp series in your opinion?

Hmm, I have only read Cardcaptor Sakura, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, and xxxHolic (and part of its sequel but, at the time, couldn't find a scanalation that didn't look liek ass and wasn't missing large swaths of chapters).

Of those three, I think... xxxHolic might have the least amount of Weird Shit BUUUUUUUUT then the finale shits the bed. Just fucking shits and smears it. While looking you in the eyes. So like... idk if I'd call xxxHolic tolerable.

While xxxHolic ruins it at literally the last second it COULD ruin it, TRC is... probably less weird but like... it has a thread of pseudo or not pseudo oedipal complex going on. But I don't know if they knew they were doing that but they did. But it's like... alternate universe (maybe?) oedipal complex.

And if you're like "STephanie, how cna you be confused about that?" well if you read TRC you would know you get confused about a lot of things. Because CLAMP got lost in the fucking sauce, gave up on the manga, randomly finished it because they were over it, and then years later did a sequel and idk what they did in the sequel but liek.. it probably wasn't good.

IN CONCLUSION

There probably are no "tolerable" CLAMP series. I am a person being held hostage by nostalgia and an extreme fondness for their charcater work (when they don't fuck it up) and can't let them go.

I should be held accountable for that personal failure. No one else should read CLAMP manga. Just look at the art and go "You know, for such anatomical failures, this is still som ereally compelling design work" and move on. Go "It's crazy that so much of their gaybait is based off a Jojo ship and what's even crazier is they did a manga about that jojo ship having eggpreg." And then you move on.

Tsubasa Seven Seas Chronicle

The bulk of the story would be about the early Straw Hats and pre-Acid Tokyo tsubasa gang with an epilogue after both series are over.

Early because you Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle never hit the high-powered fighting levels that One Piece did, but One Piece never had the insane time travel and universe-cracking magical paradoxes of late TRC; keeping it low lets both settings play on an even board. Obviously the TRC gang drop into the OP world for a Feather, which has caused rumours of amazing treasures and Devil Fruit related nonsense amongst the locals. Hence how the Straw Hat Pirates get involved.

Zoro and Kurogane fight; I reckon Zoro will win, but he’ll find a lot to emulate from his elder samurai here. Sanji thinks Fai is creepy but between their shared fighting style, Fai’s tendency to absolutely brutalise people who hurt Princess Sakura, and the fact that he’s a half decent cook, he ultimately learns to respect him. Luffy doesn’t give a fuck about Sakura or the feather quest but he likes Syaoran. Sakura gets adopted by Nami and Robin.

In the epilogue ‘real’ Syaoran, vampire! Fai and Newly Armed Kurogane return to the One Piece world, as they’re implied to return to all the sites of their early adventures, and find that Luffy now reigns as the Pirate King. They get a royal welcome from their old friends, and it’s through One Piece devil fruit soul shenanigans that they finally re-embody the Sakura and Syaoran who travelled there before. Franky messes with Kuro’s arm. Sanji and Fai share a cigarette. C-Sakura and C-Syaoran melt into one another’s arms. An obligatory One Piece Post Arc Party is held.

Happy Endings all round, baby.

Okay I put this in the tags if another post last night but deleted it bc it wasn't actually the place and I'm gonna share my thoughts but might not even tag this idk.

Re: that post abt the trc fandom disappearing post greywaren

First: I like a lot of the dreamer trilogy. I pretty well liked greywaren. I'm not as attached to either as I am to trc, but I did genuinely enjoy them.

Second: I am a trc fandom baby. I am a fandom INFANT. I got into these books about 3 weeks before Greywaren came out, and got to Greywaren about 3 weeks after it came out.

Third: They ate my brain for 3 months. I read TRC twice in the space of two weeks, then TDT, with greywaren specifically twice in a row. I then followed with Scorpio Races and All the Crooked Saints. I genuinely coukdnt read anything not Stiefvater for THREE MONTHS bc my brain was like "this is where the dopamine lives, nowhere else".

Third: I also read a fair amount of Maggie's blog and her thoughts about the series, including the notes that came out right after Greywaren was published. I've read 11 of her books. I own the writing seminar she put together and have watched about half of it just to listen to her talk. I like her art a lot and think her music is neat. I am Not Normal about Maggie Stiefvater.

So. Given the givens, my thoughts. The post I saw was the one going around about how the fandom died after Greywaren came out. I can't really speak to this bc I couldnt look at the tags until I finished Greywaren. So I only really know the fandom post-Greywaren. TRC is what brought me back to tumblr tho, after probably 4 years of only casually being interested in what was happening over here. I needed people to yell with and I found them here.

What I can speak to and apparently cannot prevent myself from speaking to is a lot of the notes on that post. There was a lot of talk of her being bored with the series, of wishing she had taken more time, of feeling betrayed by it not being the series she wanted/she had promised.

I am in many ways a Stiefvater apologist. I am. Yeah, she was probably kind of bored with the series. She was overwhelmed. It was 7 books and 10 years, and she was tired. She's stated that she's never going to write a series again. She's over the whole concept. Series are hard, the final book in a series is especially hard. I think we can look at George RR Martin and Patrick Rothfuss for truth there.

And maybe it feels as tho she should have gone the way of those 2. Not finishing the story, or putting it odd for longer to get it right. But a- I feel like that actually would have sucked more and gotten her more shit, and b- I have a feeling it wasn't an option given her contracts. And taking more time was probably not an option given her contracts. She had signed on for 3 books, possibly within a timespan, and three books she had to give them.

As go "this wasn't the Ronan series she promised" and "I hated the universe/big pieces of thr plot", we go back to the scholastic contracts. They didn't let her write the story she wanted. She had different titles she wanted, there was a whole different plot and vibe. The fucking Moderators weren't her idea. And yeah this comes directly from her statement post greywaren publishing, where she still had to be careful and still needed to sell books, but personally I believe her. If you've ever listened to her talk about writing, you know she has specific stories she wants to tell. Stories that matter to her and feel important. She'll make concessions based on marketability or what she believes the audience would like more, but she wants to tell a specific story. And she didn't get to do that with TDT and I think it pissed her off more than she let on.

I also think it's pretty fucking clear she isn't super happy with Greywaren. She literally nailed a copy of it to the wall. Like pounded a handmade wrought iron nail through a hardback copy of the book and then put it on the wall in her study. She was soooo fucking done. And it might feel like a betrayal of her readers and the series to be tired of the series and to give us a book that feels tired of and annoyed with the series, but she's a person as well as an author. She has opinions and desires and things she does and doesn't want to be doing. And for the sake on contracts, commitments, and not disappointing readers, she kept writing books she maybe didn't care about anymore. There's enough neurodivergence in the fandom that the difficult nature of that should make sense, right?

I saw at least one person say they aren't going to get any more of her books, and like obviously that's a choice you get to make, it feels like a shitty one. Personally I'm pretty excited to see what she does next. She's apparently working on a fairly long adult novel that's got her excited again. I love reading stuff written by people who are excited to be writing it, so I think this none is gonna be a good time. But idk, her writing style just makes my brain go brrrr.

Also i don't know how relevant is to the point I'm making but I still need to say it:

Idk how many people know/remember/consider that 2 of these seven books were written and published while she was like. Actively dying. Or suffering from a condition that was pretty damn close to killing her. TRK and CDTH were written in the fucking height of her symptoms while no one was paying attention and getting a dx was really fucking hard. She talked about putting a lot of her experience with illness into Ronan, and Addison's is a disease of lack of energy and sleeping too much and missing a lot of your own life because of it. And maybe thats why Greywaren felt right to her, and maybe that's why TRK and CDTH feel different to the books before and after them. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it all and my hyperempathy is getting the better of me.

Dirty (How they dirty talk) - Outside sexual activities it's mostly suggestive teasing and innuendos. Fuuma teases Kamui with all nastiness they've did before, but subtly so noone who hears them knows what it is about (they do.... Sorata and Karen make bets with how many bite marks and scratches will Fuuma return to base this time). Kamui would hiss and attack with those vampire nails, all until battle is occurring somewhere private and they're on one another.

During sex Fuuma keeps some of dirty talk but he's not going overboard with it. Mostly praises ('you're taking me in so well', 'keep on sucking', 'you feel so tight, it's fucking amazing' etc.) or praises that sound like degradation ('little slut', teasing about insatiable sexual appetite, how lewd Kamui can get etc.). As for Kamui, he tends to moan and beg for more/harder/etc. during sex, dirty talking isn't something he'd do unprompted. If Fuuma provokes him or lets Kamui take a lead, he might get drunk on sense of power; hence he goes loose, lets dirty mouth go wild and starts dirty talking about every single thing he loves about their sex life and Fuuma himself; all while riding him. From dusk till dawn pretty much, they had slow passionate love-making few times, then fucked brutally like animals as well; couldn’t settle on just once pace for night. Fuuma managed to stay quiet most of time but Kamui couldn’t; eventually they got caught. Subaru was searching for his twin after he noticed Kamui was missing for 2 hours now; he saw them, but only Fuuma noticed Subaru (who blushed and left immediately, understood the message). Subaru kept that as secret, Kamui doesn’t know he knows, so to say.

Sexy (how they turn each other on) – does Kamui even need to do anything? No? Fuuma is horny for him whenever he sees him. Still, beside generally existing, Kamui subtly turns Fuuma on by being coy or sexy. Do you think about him giving up on reviving his brother for the chance to protect these people he was never supposed to care about, that he was supposed to kill when the time came?

Do you think about kurogane, no family left in the world, no context for the centuries of hurt built up in fai, seeing this as fai giving up on them? Kurogane who learned love from his parents as guardians of a country, who didn't stop fighting until they were forced to by death?

Do you think about these two men, so intensely products of the hurt children they once were? One unable to tolerate the others desire to die, one unable to forgive the other for forcing him to live?

Hey what do you think the c!emeraldduo equivalent of "Good morning, kurogane" would be?

see this for me is where the comparisons begin to fall apart a bit because while this is all true of fai and i Am extremely fucked up about it thank you very much trc anon you're the WORST, cphil's flaws have never particularly been about self-destruction or sacrifice imo? he's always been quite conscious of survival, and while i don't think he would ever hesitate in throwing himself on the blade for the sake of his loved ones, i don't think he would ever seek it so desperately the way fai does, even in his worst moments. cphil's flaws, at least to me, are instead about like. this contradiction between responsibility and separation? responsibility because he has to be the one to fix things, to see things through, to teach the lesson and repair the damage, but separation because he also has to exist Apart from people, whether that's because of his regrets over the pain he's caused them, or because he believes the best way to respect them is to give them distance, or just because of the ever-present knowledge that everyone he knows and loves he will one day lose.

in this au, where he's been conditioned to believe that his mere presence in people's lives has the power to doom them, i think that tendency toward separation becomes even more pronounced. he exists among the group and will do what he can to help because he has a job to do, a responsibility to fulfill, but he Will Not push, he will back off at the slightest show of resistance, even if he knows that he should interfere he just. can't. because what if he just makes things worse?

and like. in canon, c!emeralds have years and years of camraderie and shared experience and understanding backing their relationship, but in this situation where they don't have any of that and all ctechno knows is that he Has to fight for everything until his dying breath (because ctechno in any universe is all about loyalty and duty) whereas this guy backs off the second things get hard? yeah, kurogane's vicious callouts of fai's flaws would definitely still exist, even if the flaws in question are different.

in this scenario, the thing that causes the acid tokyo fallout would probably not be ctechno forcing cphil to stay alive, but instead putting him in a situation where he is forced to take action against his will, and in doing so cphil's fears are proven right; something goes wrong, someone fails to be saved, and once again it's all his fault.

also, this is completely derailing but you did get me thinking: cphil does not have fai's flaw of self-sacrifice, but um well do you ever think about "keep the discs i've done enough with my life" or like uhhhh

trc is interesting to me because i don't know that it's a secret that i wish the author was not who she was, but i stand by loving these books because they fascinate me.

i love how realistic adam is. i love how absolutely not realistic gansey is. i love that blue describes their relationship as being "a little bit in love with all of them" including ronan, who she famously doesn't get along with. because it's true! they are all a little bit in love with each other. they're her raven boys. i love that ronan, beneath his snarling facade, is just a scared, sad boy who wants to be loved, and i love that adam (ADAM!!!) shows him that love.

and i love that they have their own secret catchphrase to tell each other they love each other? and it's so PRETENTIOUS? and i love that i would absolutely most likely dislike all of them if i met them in real life, because that's what makes them so interesting as characters.

i hate that noah doesn't get remembered, but i love that they loved him so much that he felt that love so completely, so as to sacrifice himself for gansey a second time. that first time, the choice was taken away from him, and the second time, he chose it because he loved gansey so much. i love that blue practiced kissing with noah because he was dead (very clever workaround lol)!! i love that noah got to be remembered by them. and i hate that he slipped from time. but at least for a little while, he was remembered.

i love love love that all ronan wants to do is be a farmer. i love that adam went to harvard! i LOVE that gansey said fuck college, and i love that he and blue (and henry) went on a cross-country roadtrip. and (into the next trilogy) i love that adam is swindling rich college students out of money?? i love that ronan is dreaming him gifts, that look insane because they're pulled from his dreams! i love that gansey and blue are chaining themselves to trees in protest. i love the fox way women. i love the gray man (surprise?!), and i love how eerie and strange the universe is while simultaneously feeling lived in and warm.

mostly, i love that adam (can you tell i love adam? me? tumblr user adamsparirh? lmao) gets to be happy. i love that he ends the series happy!! i love that he's in love with ronan and he has a satyr/goat daughter and that he's going to harvard. i love adam and i love that he gets to thrive and that he's not perfect, and he can be a bitch and i love him so much UGH thank you

I had an experience where I was realizing for the first time that, in ccs, trc, and xxxholic, it's All The Same Guy. It's Clow All The Way Down. Like!!! It's just one guy!!! Initially, I think, I had assumed that the trc/xxxholic guy was an alternate universe version of the ccs guy because there were LOTS of those floating around, which would have been one thing I guess, but no!!! It's just the one guy!!!! Just one stupid wizard who died before the story started and haunts all the pages!!!! We know him only by the space around his absence and the fingerprints he left on Everything!!! It's insane and he's insane and I can't imagine what the inside of his head would have been like. No wonder he got along with Yuuko who the fuck else could keep up with him like she could. "hey babe you wanna create some sentient life forms today? maybe color-code em symbolically? maybe give them a bunch of weird magic abilities so that we can have them when we serendipitously need them years down the road and also maybe in a different universe?" like FUCK OFF I love the mythos of these universes. I think the entirety of these three stories could have been avoided if Clow had seen a therapist. one who specialized in OP magicians.

so, where exactly is ccs time-line wise in the crossover? are sakura and co the same age as the ml kids or are they younger, has clear card happened yet? is just the main series canon or is xxxholic and all that canon as well? in ccs the cards are considered extremely powerful, are they still so powerful in this universe where so much more magic exists? do you think kero would get along with plagg?

Okay so answers:

1.) Css has happened by the time ML happens. Canon has them at like 10, so that would be a few years before ML since everyone in The Crossover is roughly the same age.

2.) I am debating on Clear Card because I am behind on that so it's just not Canon to me rn.

3.) Technically through the power of TRC, I can make every CLAMP series Canon. I need to brush up on xxxHolic tho.

4.) The Clow Cards are extremely fucking powerful. They are on par with some other very powerful items. But the thing that makes them unique? The Cards were entirely created by one Witch. Usually to get the kind of power they have, you would have to have multiple Witches working together or call on powers of the Gods. Clow Reed was the only person directly involved in making the Clow Cards.
