For your reading pleasure
My response to Google's survey. I thought I should share it with more than just Big Tech
Tumblr media
I am concerned about privacy, and the fact that new integrated products such as Google Labs may lead to theft of intellectual property. I love Google Drive - it's what I know, what I grew up using. But new policies and AI are killing many of the things I love, so what's one more drop in the barrel, right? If everyone else is screwing over their users, why not us, too? Why would I be the change I want to see in the world when I could just make money instead?
I just wish we had the tools to do what we love without constantly looking over our shoulders. I thought I had that with Google Drive. I thought I had the best. So I don't dislike anything about Google Drive this week. I'm just disappointed that my favourite productivity software isn't as great as I thought. Much as I hate to say it, I might be leaving Google behind altogether. I've already made the browser switch to Firefox and the search engine switch to DuckDuckGo. Now my last holdout, the amazing processing power of Google Drive, I'm finally leaving behind. And it feels like leaving a childhood home.
If you're reading this, random Google employee whose desktop this crossed, I love you. You're an amazing person, not just because you read all of this, but because you're a person. And that's the most amazing thing you could possibly be. Not an algorithmically generated voice, or a face complied from millions of faces across the globe.
A person.
Enjoy the little things. Like a perfect polygon drawn with the Google Drawings line tool. The clean text editing of a fresh Google Doc. The beautiful simplicity of Google Slides that can create so much more than just slideshows. The unlocked creativity of a child like me who's just been given a blank canvas and a world of limitless potential.
Or something even more real, something beyond the boundaries of this digital world. Anything. Something that brings you joy. Because life's too short for anything else.
So, this is goodbye. Chances are I'll never meet you. But you've met me now. At least, this little piece of me. And if you think you know something about me, just know that you've only scratched the surface. And if I can be a complex person beyond this essay text of a Google Drive review, imagine what you can be.
Goodbye. I love you.

This blog is pro unions and pro strikes. Support the Writers' Guild! (Not that I know a way to do that)

Just FYI, this blog supports unions. All unions*. I will be blocking anyone I see spouting nonsense about the WGA strike. Screenwriting is real work, and I have seen some ice cold "hot takes" about this strike in the last day or so. Get off your bullshit just because you don’t want your favorite show to be delayed or canceled. I don't want that for mine either, but writers deserve fair working conditions and fair compensation. Asking them to "shut up about it" is equivalent to asking someone to donate their art to you for the exposure. Exposure don't pay that rent, darlins.
Part of a quality show is the writing.
*labor unions, not the police

Writers strike support letter
@neil-gaiman
Heard today on Neil’s blog that letters to company’s in support of the writers strike help, this is what I wrote to Netflix and will likely put something similar on letters to other company’s before I put them in the mail tomorrow, I hope I did it right 😂
So yeah, if I got anything wrong or if my handwritings illegible let me know :)

There's lots of stuff happening at once so have a round up:
Warner Bros and Cartoon Network animation production (various) roles are working to join The Animation Guild. [edited to clarify] “Although many might not think it, production is a specialized skill,” said Warner Bros. Animation production manager, Hannah Ferenc in an official statement. “We might not be artists or writers, but what we bring to the table goes beyond traditional creativity and gets content on the air.”
Further edit for clarity: the unionization effort is for animation production roles (not animators, who are already unionized), to bring production staff into The Animation Guild at WB and CN.
Also I'm going to point out Animation is often an under-appreciated form of media, often looked down on as lesser, or less worthy, or less high quality than live action and I'm a fan of Animation. So I extra want to voice my support for the WB and CN production staff + animators, and everyone who works in animation for all the beautiful work they do in every facet.
UPS agreed to go back and negotiate with the Teamsters union, prepared to increase pay/benefits. Tentatively...I hope this is a hopeful sign for the labor movement, and for the Hollywood strikes as well. If UPS saw the way the wind was blowing, could that make Hollywood companies feel more pressure. UPS is a massive corporation. Granted, Hollywood studios are multiple big corporations, but maybe this doesn't bode well for them stonewalling the SAG and WGA.
IATSE Local 798--Broadway makeup and hair stylists union--is voting whether or not to authorize a strike, after talks with Broadway League (the producers association) and Disney Theatrical Productions stalled. There's a very informative video embedded in the blog post from Kevin Thomas Garica, who worked on Hadestown and Anastasia. Yes, Broadway could shut down.

I just got an anon who was purportedly at a comic conference and tried to share some unreleased information about certain characters in a certain movie. Whether it's true or not, I can't verify nor am I interested in doing so.
In support of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, this blog will not be posting or answering anything related to upcoming DC content.
(Yes, I know comic and screenwriting are different. But there's a lot of overlap and non-union folks are supporting the strike too.)
If you're wondering what comic fans can do, here are some suggestions:
Do not cancel your orders or subscriptions. Neither union has called for a consumer boycott. The point is to keep up demand to show companies like DC and Warner Bros. that they need writers and actors to keep their audience (From what I understand, finished content like the Blue Beetle movie are okay to consume.)
Donate to funds that support striking workers like the Entertainment Community Fund and the Snacklist.
If you can, join the picket line. Otherwise, social media is a good place to voice your support. You can also send letters or emails directly to the studios themselves.
If you are suddenly offered a gig, as shiny of an opportunity it may seem, do not take it. It might look good now but you will be barred from union membership and it'll jeopardize your future career prospects.
Do not harass writers or actors about production delays. The point of a strike is to disrupt the release of content. We can do without the new Superman movie if it means the people behind it get what they deserve. If you want to direct your frustration at anyone, direct it toward the studio execs.
This is also a good time to show support for indie comics and fan works!
Don't worry, I will still engage with old DC content and headcanons as usual.

In light of the recent announcement of the Harry Potter TV Show and the fact that this is primarily a Harry Potter fan fiction blog, the below needs to be said.
I am not excited about this show.
If you told my past self 5 years ago this, I’d be shocked.  Five years ago, if they announced a Harry Potter TV show I’d be doing everything in my power to be involved some way or another.  However, in the last five years JKR has shown her true colors and spent her free time and money attacking the trans community.  There are many reasons why I’m not excited about the show or looking forward to it in any regard, but to me the most important is that this show gives JKR more money and cultural capital to further her anti-trans agenda.  This is unacceptable.
I think a lot of us raised on Harry Potter really wanted to separate the art from the artist, dive further into fanfic and fandom and just ignore that the woman who created a world in which we’ve spent most of our lives escaping into.  However, we can’t do that.  It’s come to my attention over the past few days that a lot of people aren’t even aware of the active harm JKR is doing to the trans community.  Most people just say, ‘oh she said some weird stuff on twitter’ right?
Well, yeah.  But, did you also know she launched an active campaign against a reform bill that made it easier for trans people to legally change gender?  You know what happened?  The UK blocked that Bill and Scotland now has to launch a legal challenge to the government block.  She’s also funding a Sex Abuse Crisis Center that excludes trans women.  Yeah, that’s right.  She’s using her money from a book about love and acceptance to actively exclude a marginalized group from a crisis center.  She’s also publicly admitted via twitter that she funds anti-LGBTQ political activity in the UK.
So yeah, there’s a direct line of fans supporting official trademarked Harry Potter anything and that money directly harming transpeople.  Sorry for that rude awakening, but some of y’all are doing backflips to avoid seeing this.
Now, is there a way to prevent Warner Brothers (and Max, lol) from making this show?  Probably not?  After mergers and at a point when the tv and film industry isn’t booming, they need money.  You know what makes money?  Harry Potter.  Which is why they’re rebooting it.  Another question that’s been raised, will the looming writer’s strike affect this?  I would guess probably not?  Most UK writers (and International writers at large) are not in the WGA.  JKR has always wanted the most amount of British people involved in Harry Potter adaptations, so they’ll use the strike to find a UK writer and get them to work.
So what can we do?
Don’t watch the show.  Or, if you do.  Pirate it. In fact, cancel your Max subscription before the show launches.
They’re going to spend A LOT of money on this.  If the numbers aren’t there for them they will do what every other streamer does with an unsuccessful show and cancel it.  They announced 5 Fantastic Beast movies, and yet...where’s that last one?
Anyway, thanks for reading this whole thing if you’ve gotten this far.  Please share with friends who are excited about the show.  Please engage in meaningful discussions with other Potter fans.  Please support our trans friends and strangers.
Once again, this blog says FUCK JKR.

Do you know/think the Earthspark writers are participating in the strike? I know it's actors and writers but I don't know if voice actors and animated tv show writers are included
My apologies for answering this ask late, I had written an answer last night and then for some reason it deleted itself before I could post it.
I'm not sure about the writers, but I do know that several of the Earthspark VAs are currently on strike with SAG-AFTRA, including Steve Blum and Nolan North.
Remember it is extremely important right now to support the actors' and writers' strike. And if anything in Earthspark-- writers, voice actors, etc. --is replaced by AI in the future, I will quit watching and shut down this blog.
