Armina Dalmar Ghedi: Night Raid

Beautiful Armina, she is the one who asked me to silence the night watch.

I cross yards at a time, gleeful as I am bounding. Full clear, she demanded - Not a soul standing in the estate. I stalked even the shadows themselves, though I only had until full moon’s midnight to complete my order. The guards who patrol these walls are few, and I am a studied archer. I miss the way Aadila used to congratulate me on my work, but the young master is so estranged from zirs delightful sister.The Ghedi family is complicated, and relationships are muddied by political issues. Shadows swallow the corpses as they fall, a silver glint is the only mark that is left Something of a token, the magic cannot consume the silver, but it is boiled to a lump like some kind of forge slag.. I return to the rooftops and my heart shreds my voice through anxiety. She is so beautiful, but keeping her distance from the estate. Her enemies are clever, and no so clever as this duke. The last patrol is removed by my final arrow, the shadow explodes from the glass charm at the broad tip, and, though he screams, i cannot hear him. The other he was courting, a fellow guard, stout and wide as a handsome hammer, is easily doomed from proximity. I turned to her, all the lovely gifts she gave me have been dispatched to the guards, and i raise my bow with a candle to alert Armina that I have completed the route. She is a fire-branded beauty, even as she collects the folds of her hood to hide her face. Several others approached with her, though surely one is rival for her heart, I expect I am soon her favorite acolyte. While we are gathered together, the call to arms for the second phase is made. our teams are set. Armina stared into my eyes before she spoke: “When you find the rooftop weakened, exploit that and take us through the great manor. I trust you won’t lead me to harm, but my preparations are complete. All here play a roll. This strike will announce my distaste for the Duke’s poor judgement.” Of course, Armina’s eyes are hidden behind her veil, but the auburn lips of rapturous beauty, glistening in the candle-light, entice the very essence of each dying ember of justice left in this world. When she spoke to us, my heart held each breath like a bouquet on my wedding day. This obsession often drives me to wish i had the willpower to fully embrace the fairer side of my genes.. Armina leads us through each hall, and we burst through each door until we have become guests in the ball room. Almost none of the service is awake so late at night, and those that stir, Armina’s blades rush from her side and treat the interloper to a silent, peaceful embrace. Though i know not if they die in this process, i know there is no blood. Armina is armed, but she does not raise her hands to combat. It is beneath her. She is of higher purpose, and greater feats. In the ball room she brandishes her sword, a silver saber to rival her sibling’s rapier. She begins her ritual, writing in black and red dust upon the floor in a spiral, before setting it blazed with some solution. Like a mystic legend, the trail of dust consumed the floor and spat such smoke that we all though surely she was endangered, but when the short flames settled, and the spiral was cut into the dance floor, Armina gestured to me. Finally was my part to play, certainly a pivot in my career among these radicals. Armina, in such grace and swift motion, drew her blade across my chest, and I fell to the warm embers of the floor. She removed the pendant and my eyes were so .. dark now. I could feel pain, finally. Armina’s magic spells bound to my mind, drew back like great tendrils of a deadly vine. Her vile works enraptured me, and i followed every word to the final breath until this moment. “Do not fret, child.” Armina whispered to me, her voice as gentle and soft as ever, but my ears now suffer as she speaks, my captor, my warden of a prison within my mind. I suffer here because of the witchery of a vile corruptor. I tried to speak, but my tongue flapped not at all, and a blank nub ground against my teeth, barely i was able to even utter a curse upon her. Pitiful as it would be, and without affect upon the fated witch of the Ghedi family. Armina put a finger to my lips, and i could not bite her because my teeth were so far gone. Now seemingly removed, but when? She stood over me, and quickly drove a sword to my chest.

That is what came of me, as i lay here now. Nothing but anger and deceit - the embers below me will have me by the morrow, and she will leave me. My blood is so corrupted by her ways that it faintly sizzled into glittering dust around me, following the spiral along the floor. they left me, and my hands are changing. My blood is stiffening. I have lost my perspective and now i am looking out from within a glass bottle inside a writhing corpse. Does she even know my name? Armina Dalmar Ghedi, a banshee like no other, enchantress of the northern seas and sister to a blood starved lunatic. Why would anyone trust her, if not for the jewel of her love? A love so deep that it’s wrath still shivers my soul from within this prison that will no doubt haunt my resting-place long after her departure into the guiltless night.

mars in aries

at home in its own sign, you’re very sure about its desires. passions burn brightly, and you know exactly who and what you want. being cardinal, mars in aries likes to take the initiative, and does tend to rush at people in a way that can be quite intimidating to those who like to make decisions more slowly. the person with mars in Aries is excited by the pursuit, however, so rejections and evasions only serve to fuel the fire. finding it hard to admit defeat, they cannot believe that they won't get what they want, and will see the slightest ambiguity as grounds for optimism. the mars in aries does have a tendency to enjoy the chase more than the end result, so that they often lose interest in people once they have have them. they are then likely to run away just as fast as they were pursuing before :/ someone who wants to retain the interest of this person will need to remain always a little elusive.

honest, open and direct, mars in aries likes to let their potential lovers know exactly how they feel. it’s important to them that things are straight-forward and that there is no confusion. they in turn like to know exactly where they stand, and cannot bear any form of deception. they have romantic ideals about sex, and need to be true to themselves, so that the pretence involved in having sex with someone that they do not really want or when they do not want it can be very disturbing to them. mars in aries is not really looking for physical sensation, but rather for some kind of spiritual fulfillment through sex. these people seek spiritually unity, a fusing and oneness with their lover which transcends the physical act. through it, they hope to experience a moment of bliss in which they have abandoned separateness and become one with their lover.

mars in taurus

someone with this placement will have a good connection to their instinctual, physical needs. this will be a strong, no-nonsense person with a matter of fact attitude towards sex; someone who gets enormous enjoyment from their sexual relationships, and with wide tastes. these people could be into sex for its own sake, as pure physical pleasure, with no trimmings. they are comfortable with their own bodies and physical desires. more gentle types could find them too careless and direct.

with mars in any of the earth signs, there is the propensity to split love and sex; but someone with mars in taurus is most prone to this, simply because their desire nature is so strong. these are not people who can easily be celibate, so if there is no-one in their lives who really matters to them, they are still going to look for sexual partners. they may have a pragmatic view of these liaisons, unaware of their own double standards, as when they are deeply involved with someone on a feeling level their values change dramatically.

taurus is arguably the most possessive sign of the zodiac, and someone with mars in it may claim total ownership rights over their sexual partner. this differs from the emotional possessiveness of someone with mars in scorpio, as with taurus the partner becomes a prized object (trophy wife) in which they invest a part of themselves. infidelity is so completely threatening to these people that it is intolerable (though they may be cheaters themselves lol). they will value their partners highly, treat them as a possession, as an extension of themselves, and expect and demand absolute faithfulness. to say that they are jealous and possessive of loved ones is an understatement.

~While I don’t think he’d go out of his way to have a baby, he definitely wouldn’t take any steps to avoid it, either. That is, he wouldn’t really stray into breeding kink territory or anything of that kind but he’s not gonna pull out either.

~But, yeah, if you were to get pregnant, Ferdinand wouldn’t be displeased by any means. He’d legitimately think it was the best way to “fix” things and out of a misguided attempt to ignore any negative aspects of the relationship and cling to the idealism of a happy marriage.

~Just a side note, but I def see him with a body worship kink and I can only begin to imagine how that would intensify with his weakness for the softness and so-called beauty of motherhood. Whatever that’s supposed to mean.

~Honestly, I don’t see him overtly leveraging as a manipulation tactic. No, he’s good enough that his genuine feelings could do the job for him. Like, it’s not just you anymore. You’re responsible for another life so don’t you think you just trust him and let him take care of you? Oh, sure, he’d humor you (on account of the hormones) and say that he understands why you’re upset, but please just calm down. Everything will be all right, he’ll take care of you.

~I think that Ferdinand would want a family even without the whole dark personality aspect. The way he’d see it is that children are a natural result of a union and love. He’d absolutely cherish your children if for no other reason than the fact that they’d be half you, although you can’t tell me that he wouldn’t have a horrible weakness for kids.

~You’d be barely showing and he’d be picking out baby names and getting opinions on how to decorate the nursery and occasionally freaking out due to anticipation and nerves. He’d be really, disastrously, over-the-top protective, too. I just assume white magic would greatly lessen the infant and mother mortality rate but that doesn’t entirely remove the risk of complications so he’d be cloyingly careful about everything you ate, keeping tabs on any possible oddity going on with you. And, you know, I think he would enjoy emotionally taking care of you. Like if you were scared or sad or anything, I think he’d enjoy comforting you in a way that’s definitely not healthy. He’d enjoy being needed, I suppose.

~Yeah, so overall I view any sort of darker personality take on Ferdinand to be him, but with his sweet and noble and protective traits dialed up to an eleven without any sort of self awareness to make him pause and consider that maybe you don’t feel the same so having a child like this, as an intentional act of manipulation to make you stay or not, would be within the realm of possibilities.

Sylvain Jose Gautier (Bastard Man)

~Sylvain is pretty easy to imagine with a dark personality. I mean, assuming you have no pity in your heart and are willing to write him in a way that he never was able to get over his myriad issues, self hatred, severe distrust of people’s true intentions, and familial trauma.

~Assuming all that, and entertaining the idea that he could never find a good balance of repression and escapism, I think Sylvain would create an unhealthy emotional bond to a single person he believed to be exempt from his overall dismal regard for people and do this fun little thing where he’d chaotically flip flop between extreme emotions of distrust, blame, and anger and adoration, need, and a desperation to be seen as he was and still loved.

~But it’d be a brutal cycle because he’s not the delusional type. Sometimes he could be, both with the good and the bad, but those would be kind of episodic. There’d be bad days where he’d be utterly convinced that you were just like the rest and he’d pick little fights and generally just be pretty pissy. But then sometimes he’d be blinded by love and so caught up in it that even if you told him no, he’d take it with a cheeky wink because of course you loved him and everything was so good. But, mostly, it’d just be a lot of dysfunction and Sylvain trying to lure you into a nice, good relationship with him by being mostly normal and decently charming and even, occasionally, being vulnerable (and tricking you into being vulnerable with him).

~Anyway, back to the point. With all that context, why not bring a baby into the mix, right?

~How many times does Sylvain bring up crest babies. Please, someone do a hard count and get back to me because damn son. So, may I just say, if anyone of these three were to have a breeding kink it’d be him. Is that controversial? Just think about it. Every girl ever wants him mystical crest cum, right? So, mentally, the whole thing would have a lot of weight and significance. Also Sylvain just strikes me as the type who’d be self aware enough of his dark and unhealthy needs that staking as intimate of a claim as that would be erotic. Unlike the other two, the act of forcing an irreversible and tangible change in your body and mind would be interesting. Not that he’d tell you any of that, or even dwell on it himself.

~I’m torn between Sylvain saying it was an accident and him using the argument that since the two of you were in love, it was only natural that you’d start a family together. How could you not want to have his children? Better yet, how was he supposed to know that you wanted to wait.

~But if you continued to be unreasonable, he’d go on the defensive. Like, what are you going to do? Leave him? For what? To raise his baby on your own? Or, worse, abandon your child? If you thought he’d voiced unfairly negative opinions about women before, the way he’d talk about a mother who abandoned her child and such a good, happy life with a loving husband would be infinitely worse. After all, he wanted to make a change in your relationship and be happy together. He wanted to be a good, loving father. He wanted a family with you. After everything, what kind of person would you be to throw that all away?

~So that’s... a lot.

~But Sylvain’s the type to be awful in the moment then regret it after the heat dies down. Knowing he’d hurt you would genuinely tear him up inside. All of that adoration and desperation to keep you with him because he’d feel like he needed you to be happy would kick in and he’d break down under the guilt and tell you how much he loved you, how happy it made him to think that the two of you could have a family, that he knew you would be a great mother, that he knew he’d messed up but he would make it up to you, that you really could be a happy family.

~Just saying, I can see him taking a perverse sort of pleasure in the physical effects of pregnancy. Also, he’d definitely be a lot softer with you. Guilty conscience, anyone?

Dimitri (Dimi) (Jimmy)

~You, dear anon, said it better than I could have myself. I agree SO HARD that Dimitri would be terrified of being a parent, but at the same time I think, if it were to happen, he’d be utterly enamored with the idea. There’s a lot more that I think about how he’d regard fatherhood, but that’s the gist.

~Funny thing is, darker Dimitri is just like... More needy... unbearably protective... Paranoid... less stable... bad at managing his emotions when it comes to you... But, like, the same general emotions about fatherhood would apply because that’s already pretty complex. Only, this time, with an obvious emphasis on how it would effect you and your relationship.

~I was going to say that I can’t see Dimitri purposefully impregnating you, but that’s not entirely true. In a fit where he’s feeling especially raw and paranoid, I think he would do it very purposefully and even almost-kinda-sorta relish in the idea.

~I view his obsessive feelings to be like an itch he can’t quite scratch because he knows better than anybody how easy it would be to lose you and doesn’t know how to manage both his own instability with the unpredictable world because at any moment it could all spiral apart.

~So, this in mind, he could believe that having a baby would make things different. More than just vows or words or rings or anything, it would be a concrete and absolute tie between the two of you. He would have an unquestionable claim over you that would go beyond the scope of just your relationship, you’d be carrying the royal heir which would give Dimitri even further valid excuses to be suffocatingly overprotective.

~It would be... So messy... On the one hand, I think the concept of fatherhood, of being given another chance, of being needed that much more by both you and the child, would really appeal to him. It could even sand off some of the rougher edges of his darker traits, now that he had this assured security in keeping you with him. Sure, the itch wouldn’t be scratched entirely, but it would be easier to ignore, there would be a solid way to reassure himself that you were his.

~But Dimitri’s got this awful middle ground of self awareness. Anything that would come off delusion would be a result of his endless attempts at rationalizing his unhealthy feelings and trying to make sense of it all without having to actually confront the issues. But that wouldn’t mean he wouldn’t know, on some level, that what he was doing wasn’t healthy and how bad it was for you. The guilt would be intense, which would be apart of the reason he needed to keep you so close all the time because then he could pretend that you needed him just as badly, that everything was all right because he could take care of you better than anyone else.

~Dimitri’s self aware guilt would allow a part of himself to understand that he should let you go. He could even, on the bad days, convince himself that maybe, one day, he would allow you to leave him because he loved you, because what he was doing was wrong. As long as you were near him, he wouldn’t be able to stop himself, he would always hurt you.

~But using pregnancy to force you to stay with him would, perhaps even in an intentional subconscious way, cut off that last-ditch contingency to ease his own guilt and pain of what he was doing by keeping you with him. Now that you were going to be having his child, the royal heir, would mean that you could never leave. He’d know it. You would probably know it, too.

~After that point, Dimitri would double down with proving his affection, proving that he was capable of taking care of you and his child and that you could be a family and everything would be okay.

wuxia/xianxia: a loose and somewhat second-hand introduction to the genre, pt1

Sorry for the unconventional q, but i keep seeing Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation everywhere and I kinda want to get into it but a) don't know where to start (web series? live action adaptation?? wait how many are there!) and b) i don't really "get" wuxia / xianxia, that sorta stuff, i find it really hard to cross that cultural barrier and chinese mentality seems very alien. (it's not that i have no experience w different mentalities but chinese in particular is v hard to grasp w/o sources).

So if you have the time and patience, I'd love to hear a summary of it (like, a coherent summary bc all i get on the wikis is a shower of names and concepts that don't make sense to me) and perhaps some "intro for dummies" abt the relevant parts of chinese history and mentality tied to it? not just the cultivation / buddhist part but also re: familial relationships, philosophy and all that. (v brief and low effort of course) Thank you and sorry for bothering you!

("brief and low effort" referring to what I'm asking from you, not to what I need for me - as in i asked for it so i'm more than ready for a complicated essay, but you can write with as much detail as you like, I don't want to ask for some sort of comprehensive tome)

Okay first, you do realize that if you want “brief and low” for anything, you’re asking the wrong person? I was a philosophy major. brief got drilled out of me a long time ago.

Second... well, explaining what makes The Untamed / Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (mdzs for short, from the chinese title, Mo Dao Zu Shi) such a standout story does require understanding some of the wuxia conventions it subverts -- as well as some that it plays straight (so to speak) very, very well.

I figure the best approach (again, sadly not brief) is to first get a handle on the genre of wuxia. Gonna break this post into two, so you’re not reading in a single three-hour stretch or something. I’ll do a follow-up about mdzs, to hopefully make it a bit more accessible for you.

before I do that, let me first say: I didn’t grow up with this genre, so there’s going to be parts that I may miscast unintentionally. for an insider’s view, my go-to voices are @guzhuangheaven, @atthewaterside, @dramatic-gwynne, @the50-person and @drunkensword. if any of them are reading this and can point to more/other/better voices, please do.

I have three analogies -- like cultural doorways -- and like all analogies, they break down when you get into the finer details. In the broad strokes, though, they mostly work, and if nothing else, hopefully they’ll demonstrate that wuxia may be a chinese-specific version, but part of a storytelling tradition that’s nearly universal.

The three doorways are: the american wild west, the samurai era, and the british arthurian romances. And, in a tangential way, the regency period in the romance genre.

The term ‘wuxia’ can be translated several ways, but I prefer ‘martial chivalry’. Most wuxia takes place in the jianghu, a harder term to unpack. Generally, though, ‘the jianghu’ has connotations not all that different from what americans mean when they reference the wild west.

More of a concept than a physical place, the jianghu (like the ‘wild’ west) exists beyond the reach of the law and/or civilization. It’s occupied by a diverse cast of farmers, merchants, beggars, and so on, but also by outlaws, gangs, hermits, pretty much all those who don’t like the suffocating nature of the civilized world, for whatever reason. It’s not a lawless place (except to outsiders); it does have laws, but those are only unto itself.

So, jianghu is a world to itself, for the most part -- which also makes it kind of timeless. Tang dynasty, Song dynasty, Ming dynasty, it could be any of them and all of them and none of them. Just as the heyday of the cowboys and the cattle drives was barely a decade long, a culture’s romanticized history stretches into lifetimes that exist separate from any date you could pin down on a calendar.

The average wuxia protagonist would fit in reasonably well as knight errants in an arthurian romance, with one important detail in difference: they’re rarely aristocrats. Wuxia protagonists are just as likely (if not more so) to be lower-born, whether the child of farmers, or servants, some common caste.

This is where wuxia diverges from the british and japanese traditions, which have a bit more noblesse oblige going on (knights and samurai both being upper-class types). Even ‘aristocratic’ characters tend to be so only within the jianghu -- sort of like the way a territory’s elected leader in the wild west would’ve had no pull in Washington, given they weren’t from a fully-recognized state.

Wuxia does often have politics, between competing sects (think schools of learning), but that political infighting is independent of the capital’s rules or wishes. A lot of stories -- in the rare cases the topic even comes up -- tends to speak of ‘the capital’ in disparaging terms.

That’s not to say wuxia is all about the flat social systems (it’s definitely not), but most commonly a rank implies some level of competence/study. The title of sect leader isn’t granted, it's earned. Children inherit, but it’s also a common storyline to have an heir with no skills (who then goes through all the trials and tribulations to finally level up and earn that position in turn).

What makes wuxia hard to grasp is its vernacular: the conventions that form the backbone that make something recognizably ‘wuxia’ and not just ‘historical drama set on a frontier in a loosely-defined time period’.

Frex: in a Wild West story, convention is two gunfighters at opposite ends of the street, and at least one of them is wearing a holster tied to his leg with string in a way that no real gunfighter wore, ever, but Hollywood came up with the idea and now it’s a permanent part of our imagination. In the arthurian romances, convention is carrying the token of one’s lady love (a distant, untouchable figure who rarely appears on-page), or meeting the unnamed knight in black on the jousting field. Convention are the samurai who’ll die for their lord’s honor, always touchy and prickly at the first sign of disrespect.

These are things granted the most remarkable gravity, that to an outsider might seem ridiculous. (Why is there always tumbleweed?)

Now, wuxia is the latest evolution in a long-lived literary tradition (and by ‘long’ I mean like 2000+ years) -- but like any living tradition, each subsequent generation reinvents it for their time. Part of that reinvention comes from particularly influential writers, who put their own spin on things, and their interpretation becomes the next generation’s standard for the genre -- “of course wuxia must have X” or “a protagonist never does Y”. (Like how Tolkien almost single-handedly changed western concepts of elves, in fiction.)

And here’s where I explain what regency romance has to do with it. Another short-lived period, in real history, but along came Georgette Heyer, who took bits and pieces of actual research, blended them with her reactionary politics, exaggerating some things and ignoring other things completely. The result is a time-that-never-was, but she cast (and still casts) a shadow so vast that I’ve seen multiple romance writers complain that readers will see a footnoted-and-researched version as wrong, if it contradicts one of Heyer’s made-up conventions.

Modern wuxia has its own Heyer-sized influencers -- like Jin Yong (the Condor trilogy, Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils), Wen Rui'an (The Four), Gu Long (The Legend of Flying Daggers, The Proud Twins), to name a few of the biggest. If you have a chance or are inclined, the big names get remade on a pretty regular basis, and catching one will at least let you see some ur-tropes in action.

But it also means that you can’t really extrapolate, in the sense of saying, “in wuxia, people do X, ergo, X is also a factor in Chinese culture.” It’s like... take any western made in the 50s, and the vernacular is simple. The bad guys wear black hats, the good guys wear white hats, the prostitutes wear bright-colored dresses with frills and the good women wear subdued colors buttoned up to their neck. It told an audience exactly what character filled what role, but that’d tell you zero about real people you might meet in Nebraska or Utah, let alone New York City.

Almost forgot: xianxia is basically wuxia but with ‘immortal heroes’ -- so there’s gods, divine influences, non-human beings as characters (main or NPC), etc. (Btw, by ‘immortal’ I mean exactly that, like this character is six hundred years old, that one’s a thousand years old, etc.) You can think of xianxia as wuxia, but amped way up on the mystical scale.

Xianxia will sometimes take place on earth (jianghu) but sometimes in the celestial realm (heaven). Or a mix of both, like stories where a character falls (or is banished, or defects) from heaven and has to go through various trials and tribulations as a mortal human in order to regain a power, rise in rank, fall in love, or whatever their goal is.

A number of wuxia stories are driven by some sort of mcguffin, but in xianxia, the mcguffin is more likely to be a powerful spiritual weapon. But I can also think of a number of wuxia in which the mcguffin would fit right in, in xianxia (some near-mystical thing with significant positive, or negative, power independent of the wielder, which often amplifies or boosts the wielder to an inhuman degree, etc).

Thing is, the mcguffin being divine/infernal supernatural isn’t enough alone to make the story xianxia. I’m pretty sure you need non-human or super-human immortals and/or creatures to be considered in the xianxia genre.

You said a while back that while Supergiant games (Bastion, Transistor, Hades) was mostly okay, you had some words about them. I was curious as to what those words were, since Hades' full release is soon.

okay. alright. ive been playing hades lately so i definitely want to give my two cents (or dollars by the size this is gonna get). but let’s go Step by Step

the good: i want to throw a whole Endorsement over supergiant games with the art direction and its characters, which is what keeps me coming back again and again, and what i can assume is that most people are attracted to.

gameplaywise, they have a Format they stick to which has become their staple, not to their detriment but to their advantage, like... gameplay tropes, so to speak, that they stick to (such as the addition of special conditions that give a disadvantage in exchange for more long-term rewards)

i fucking adore that they take one concept per game, go for it, and when they’re done they are Done; they don’t bother with sequels, they don’t want to run things to the ground and i fucking respect that. They have their themes, and they stick to them (to various degrees of success).

that said, like every piece of media, they are not perfect and this has to be analysed and spoken about

CONTENT WARNINGS: genocide and ethnic cleansing, antisemitism, misogyny, homophobia, suicide, and mentions of incest, and a general Spoilers warning

bastion: touches on ethnic cleansing, and not in a way i’d say is satisfactory. our narrator and one of our Sympathetic characters is one of the men who worked on a world-ending weapon meant to use against the Ura (a group of people coded as East Asian) which after a bit of googling is literally called “the final solution” if there was ever a war between the Ura and the Cael (who feel like rly tan white people to me). jesus fucking CHRIST.

we also meet more Ura other than our two named characters and we have to kill most of them. so that fucking blows.

the game tries for “being a genocidal monster will get you fucked up and blown up” which duh, but i feel we shouldn’t have had a person responsible for war crimes be one of our friends no matter how bad he feels about the whole thing, or the people victim of war crimes become villains in the latter half of the game. zia’s father could’ve taken ruck’s role ez pz.

transistor: the weakest of their games, imo; the lore and writing are fairly flimsy and i did not come out feeling Satisfied, especially because it had this rly good build-up that did not pay off. not to mention... their villains? 3/4 were gay people. lol. two married guys (not even explicit, you only realize by their shared last names) and the ps*cho lesbian trope (iirc she wanted to kill the protagonist’s lover or something). the female protagonist also ends up killing herself to live forever in a digital paradise with her dead lover. it’s. god.

very Aesthetic, GORGEOUS music, interesting gameplay; had potential, i do not feel like it lived up to it at least as far as the story goes.

pyre: now this one. this one’s BEEFY. where transistor felt flimsy, pyre is rich; lots to sink your teeth into, rich in lore and loveable characters, again w the beautiful music, themes of cooperation and togetherness. my favorite of the cast is volfred sandalwood, the only Black (or, well, Black-coded) revolutionary i’ve ever seen portrayed with this amount of sympathy.

onto the bad: they literally have a Class of character named “Savage”; there’s the “mystical mentally ill person” trope; there is an overwhelming amount of explicit m/f pairs (one of them being. a romance that formed in a single day and then both of the characters were somehow willing to risk it all for each other? PLEASE) while the only hints of gayness are... hints. especially when Jodariel (another of my favs) is teased to have feelings for the player regardless of gender then only gets an ending with a male character with whom she has nothing in common 🙃

hades: and now. this one. music: gorgeous. character designs: spectacular (aphrodite is straight up naked but it’s so... natural and casual, it doesn’t feel sexualized at all). voice acting amazing. character interactions charming and endearing. as a greek mythology nerd, it was nice to see them go for the obscure shit like Zagreus at all, NOT portray Persephone and Hades as a loving couple, AND portrayed the gods as the bunch of petty assholes (some more benevolent than others) that they are. imo they’re too generous with their portrayal of achilles but i’ll allow it.

and finally... it seems all those criticisms about having all the gay characters hidden in the shadows paid off, cuz we got (aside of patroclus and achilles) a bisexual polyamorous protag. Holy Shit! and it’s not even playersexual, romance whomever you want shit without the routes recognizing each other: he explicitly talks about how he’s thinking abt them both (though it’s like “yeah usually mortals take one lover but gods love many huh” polyamory is a human thing too bro!!!!!)

and this is where it all goes, well, at least vaguely downhill lol. ok so the incest warning i gave up there? well. it’s not... outright incestuous. but it has some ugly implications. i want to emphasize: the characters never refer to each other as siblings, nor do they treat each other as such (thanatos, in fact, only recognizes hypnos as his brother, and megaera only sees the other furies as her sisters), but they were all raised by the same woman, Nyx... zagreus and thanatos even grew up together (im assuming megaera didnt meet zagreus until he was fully grown).

this is complicated even worse by the fact that they tried to trick zagreus into believing Nyx was his mother. he realized pretty early on this was not true but like... adoptive mothers, anyone? granted i can believe that bc of the attempt at deception that probably ruptured any attempt at actual familial closeness, and it’s not like hypnos and thanatos saw zagreus as their brother at any point, so they were p much aware of the truth too. with the fact that thanatos even looks like goth miles edgeworth (im not kidding you can google him up right now its literally edgeworth in a cowl) i rly feel they were aiming for Childhood Friend Anime Rival Man than the “surprise kiss bc ur not actually related <3″ shit. zagreus never once refers to nyx as his mother in-game, and also refers to thanatos and hypnos as her sons, never his brothers.

so yeah, like. if one’s feeling generous, zagreus and thanatos are more of a “my father is emotionally closed off and neglects me so my best friend’s mother basically raised me” kind of situation... just pulled off in, perhaps, the worst way possible (why didnt they just say Zagreus was told Hekate was his mom, that’s such an easy fix? or that he was born of nobody other than Hades??? [gestures at athena])

but then, the gods. aaaaaaaahhhhahahahh the gods. demeter shows up! and she calls zeus, hades and poseidon... her foster-brothers. which somehow would make the persephone thing less fucking awful, apparently. they really. really really did not need to do that. she could’ve just said “my fellow gods” or whatever. or my “god-brothers” or something, to pretend it was just a weird god alliance thing??? i dont know but implying that foster family isn’t family is just... bro, the dynamics still exist.

Don’t Like That.

i even contacted supergiant games over this. they reassured me they were even trying to avoid the incest of the original myths bc they didn’t want to mess with such a heavy theme. i believe them... but i really think they didn’t think this through. compared to something like fire emblem fates this is nearly benign, but the implications don’t look good :/

tl;dr of the tl;drs: i admire their artistic philosophy and the heavy emphasis on fresh gameplay, characters and their relationships; i appreciate that it seems that they listen to criticism?; i don’t appreciate that they didn’t think to at LEAST talk to adoptees when making a game about family.

okay okay okay i Love to talk about crop so i’m going to Try to give the shortest summary i can that’ll help make any of my other posts make sense 🥺🥰

plot: we’re plant people! we’re at war! things are Bad! simplest summary is that the original party is from agricola (food plants, monarchy w a king devoted to peace) and is kind-of allies with floaroma (flowers, obsessed with beauty). we’re also allied with the desert clans (succulents, cacti, and tumbleweeds). we’re at war with arborea (trees, a theocracy based around a god queen, just know they’re Terrible), who seems to be controlling myconia (mushrooms, we have No Idea what their deal is). and that’s the basics!!

characters: everyone is lvl 5! and everyone has Issues

camille: my girl 🥺😌🥰 shes a chamomile unity cleric, and currently trying very hard to get people in the party to Talk To Each Other. she’s an orphan, in love with agricola’s princess, and was best friends with Franto. now, she’s sworn herself to his knightly order and is devoted to serving the people and brining a better peace that works for Everyone.

franto: agricola’s former crown prince! that is, he was the prince, then renounced that to be a knight, went back to being prince, then died 😔 he was an olive paladin, kind and devoted to peace and helping his people, and fun fact: he died without ever having drawn his weapon! he was assasinated, and died bc he chose to heal the castle ward there with him instead of getting out

auberon: a blackberry monk/druid multiclass, auberon has A Lot Going On. ve can see and talk to spirits, seems to be the chosen or smth of this mystical spirit of the forest/nature. what’s the deal with that? who knows! not me, not the other players, and certainly not auberon. ve’s dealing with truly so much, and is doing ver best to cope, but can get pretty lonely :((( the player is committed to trama (teen drama), as we all should be, but our dm keeps making things serious instead 🙄 /j

fásach: the dad of the party, fásach is a saguaro cactus barbarian who recently won a duel to become the leader of the desert clans! previously, they were the head of the guard back at agricola’s palace. he has a tulip wife and has basically adopted cami and we’re taking franto’s oaths together once we’re Eventually able to have the official ceremony 🥺🥰

sparrow: a 20int asparagus wizard who was the archmage!! she was like,,, ur really cool and smart lesbian aunt, and she especially mentored franto. she sacrificed herself to bring down a very strategic bridge to keep back the enemy army for a bit, then got revivified by arborea for info. she was the other real Adult of the party, and left behind a spymaster tangerine wife, and auberon was the only person that survived the battle she died in

sico: oh, sico. franto’s player’s second character, he’s an amarayllis eloquence bard and the (former?) prince of floaroma. he’s bitchy and truly so repressed, but he’s also a brilliant political strategist and, as much as i hate to admit it, very very cool 😔 the one (1) piece of personal info he’s revealed to us is that he loves his sister, and his sister got killed last week, so. there’s That to unpack. however, we’re planning to do a coup and make him king of floaroma :D

cerise: sparrow’s players second character!! she’s a cherry tree divine soul sorc who escapes from arborea after they experimented on her. we just finished up an arc about saving the other sorcerers from the same facility she was held at. she’s an Older Sister™️, and has a Complicated relationship with divinity. she’s also my ally in forcing sico and auberon to talk about their emotions/problems and i love her so much for that 😌

I think your writing is so versatile. I have yet to read your other fics but I’m still processing the emptions Paris gave me. Maybe bc you took the same actor playing the lead role but you gave him a different breath of life; you reinvented him and I’m here for that! 😭💖 You wrote the same Chan but his soul is different in a very good way. An epithet also born by Aphrodite in the Orphic Hymns. And in the Iliad, it is said of Helen and of Tyro.

In the Archaic period, the nobility of Athens called themselves the Eupatridai, the ‘Sons of Good Fathers.’ As applied to Helen and to the aristocracy, the term emphasizes the concept of inherited excellence, which thankfully, isn’t as prominent in our own society. Particularly for the daughters of the nobility, where it implies a certain level of ownership, as well as suggesting that the daughters are valued not based upon their own actions, but upon their inherited qualities via their paternal line.

As such an epithet, it should be little shock to know that several Goddesses and no few Gods are referred by it. In particular, the children of Zeus carry the name.

Hekate is sometimes known as the child of Zeus and Asteria, though more commonly Her father is Perses. In other literature her father is Aristaios. Zeus is often referred to by his noble characteristics, deservedly so as the King of the Gods.

Perses, being a Titan, and one for whom we have little enough lore, is a bit more complicated. His name means ‘Destroyer,’ or ‘Ravager’ and his purview is as that of a destructive force. And yet, Hesiod says he was renown for his wisdom. The child of Krios, a Titan associated with the Heavens and the constellations, and Eurybia, a Titaness of the Sea, the constellations, seasons, and the winds, constitute the parents of Perses. So as the child of Titans associated with the stars in the sky, it is interesting that Perses married Asteria, Goddess of the Stars, and father of Hekate, who also carries powers over both Heaven and the Seas (as well as the Underworld.)

Aristaios’ portfolio is somewhat less dramatic, as a pastoral God of shepherds, cheesemakers, beekeeping, and half a dozen other skills. His name means ‘most excellent’ or ‘most useful.’ Considering his range includes various foods, medicines, hunting, as well as the breezes that soothe during the worst of the summer. Aristaios is the child of Apollo in most of the surviving stories, though he is sometimes a child of Ouranos.

Each of these connections suggest a different aspect of Hekate’s nature. As the daughter of Zeus, I sense the Hesiodic imagery of Hekate offering wisdom to Kings, and the honors She receives from both Gods and Humanity. With Perses, Hekate takes on a more mystical and dark aspect. She bears a bond with divination and destruction with His paternity, as well as a connection to the realms over which Hesiod describes Her powers. Lastly, Aristaios also reflects Hekate’s role over the fields and wilds as described by Hesiod.

A lot can be gained from examining the relationships between the Gods. Hekate’s parents contribute aspects to Her, and Her company reflects some aspects of Her nature. In learning about those relationships, and the character of Her family and friends, we gain new insight into Her nature, Her history, and how the ancient world understood Her.

Hey … My name is Alexiane. I imagine you are there to know my story …

In a small village in France, lived Alexiane Ruireau, a young woman aged 17 surrounded by her family and her little brother with whom she was 7 years apart.

Despite the peace and tranquility in her home, outside her home, everything is not so rosy. Some people regard it as a potential painkiller that can be easily influenced. They harassed her, humiliated her and made her all “filthy” to display it even more than enough.

Studies, community life and all kinds of extravagant interaction, all seem to complicate things for her, who is an introvert and suffering from dysphasia.

Every day, she predicted the worst as it was her daily life. She planned at least more than 3 spare cases following her last humiliation.

Victimize outside, Adored by her little brother and banal relationship with her parents.

And of course, she kept everything in silence and behaved like everyone was normal. Maybe this is all normal now? Maybe his life will always be like that after all …

One day, she took the road as usual to go to high school, lost in thought while walking straight ahead … that she did not realize that she was no longer on the sidewalks but in the middle of the road until hearing the sound of a car horn that makes it sound to the ears.

And it was at that moment, Alexiane froze in front of the vehicle which arrived at full speed and closed her eyes so as to no longer feel the suffering.

“It’s the end, huh … So goodbye”

And suddenly … she felt jostled to the side and dropped to the ground.

Suddenly … no more noise and she was still lying on the ground.

“You should take care of yourself, my dear. You might injure everyone you love.” says a voice that could be an inner voice

She opened her eyes gently and saw that nothing had happened on her way and that there was nobody. She got up and left in the direction of the school in the innocence of this event.

Arriving at school, everything was calm. Not a single person took Alexiane’s attention so she set off for the locker room to prepare for the sports class. But as soon as she was finished preparing, she turned around to face a group of people so some had something in hand.

“Why? … why are you doing this to me?” she said frightened.

“Why ?! HAHAHAHA! Why? You are such a miserable being, a junk on your feet. You deserve to suffer like a beast that you are!” he said one of the stalkers.

One of the people lifted a kind of fairly solid object and struck her on the back while another threw her a product spell which burned her on one of her eyes.

Alexiane cried out in pain from the blows and fell with a loss of balance which knocked her behind the head and succumbed in shock.

A few days later, Alexiane opened her eyes gently but everything was blurred, she felt excruciating pain in the back, a headache and one of her eyes was blindfolded. She was on a hospital bed, with a blood drip and a machine that controlled her heartbeat.

As soon as she regained consciousness, she saw her little brother lying down beside her, sleeping. Seeing him so reassured her made him forget his pain until his parents and the doctor entered the room.

Her parents had died of uneasiness and so relieved that she was waking up. But as soon as one of them squeezed her tight at the level of the back, she screamed in pain, which makes her little brother wake up with a start of fear.

“Ouch! But what happened !? Why am I having back pain ?! Why am I so ?! And why am I here ?!”

The doctor spoke:

“Miss, you were the victim of a head trauma during your fall and many bruises on your body and mainly, at the level of the back, where the pain comes from. And someone has bleached you on a part where is your right eye. ”

“… can I see …” she said in a monotonous tone

“Better not, it would risk you …”

“I WANT TO SEE IT NOW!”

Her little brother was frightened by the tone of her sweet sister’s voice. The doctor sighed and demanded that she asked.

Alex got up from her bed to face the mirror and she removed the bandage where her faulty eye was. After a few rounds of bandaging remove, she faced her reflection.

His eye was clearer, almost transparent and the iris which was more defective off-white

Alexiane couldn’t believe what she saw. She who adored her magnificent pure blue eyes has become a massacre.

But it was hearing his brother’s sobbing that made him realize what was behind it.

Everything was silent … One of her parents tried to reassure her by her new appearance but it was that the knife returned to the wound.

“GO AWAY! LEAVE ME ALONE! and she burst into tears on the floor facing the mirror.

They leave the room, leaving her alone in this room. And she got up and stared at the mirror and turned to examine the condition of her back.

His back was destroyed. Covered with large cuts hide by the seams. Alexiane remained silent at this vision of horror but instead of still crying or even remaining sad, she was … empty like this all her sense of her life was suddenly gone and her humanity erased.

"Ooooh ~ My dear Alex ~ It hurts me so much to see you like this. So damaged, destroyed. But rest assured, my cute ~, you will take revenge, you will pay them all the suffering it caused you.”

“I recognize that voice! It is the same one that saved me from the car accident! Who are you ?! Why are you following me ?!”

“What do I want? My dear, I am only your guardian angel. The one who watches over you and who doubtless saves you in delicate situations”

“If that’s the case, why not have saved me when I faced death under his blows!”

“I saved you, my sweet. If I hadn’t intervened, you will be more of this world where even there again.”

Alexiane had a hard time believing what she heard. She was starting to lose her mind.

“So may I know the name of the one who saved me?” she ask.

She obeys his request as he obeys hers.

“You see that you …” she said this, opening her eyes and stopped short at what she saw.

She saw a man in his twenties, brown hair and tie, eyes a lighter blue than hers with a scar on one of his eyes which must not be dated today. And clothes a little damage especially the jeans with holes (Maybe a fashion)

“Hey! I’m here!” he said, spanking her regain consciousness. “You wanted to see me … There you go! So … Satisfied?”

“I … I never thought of it as an apparition”

“Oh? You expected a big misty cloud that blinds you and a mystical appearance like … The devil coming out of the ground like this” and he sneered at his words.

“No! I mean … No! Drop it. But how did you find out there? I don’t remember seeing you enter this school?”

“I heard the noise and I found you so so I dismiss the savages and call an ambulance (and a teacher too). And it’s true, I’m not in this school, let’s say I have escaped the control of the school. ”

“Hmm. Good whatever. Now I’m awful. My back with huge disgusting marks and my eye … I can’t face myself anymore. Leave as much as you can and leave me in my solitude , I’m used to being let loose like common waste. ”

… but he did not move.

“Alexiane ~ Precious Alexiane ~. Do you think I came here and to have saved you twice in the same day to abandon you?

He raised his long strand of hair that covered his defective eye. Alexiane blushed at his tender gesture.

Oh no no! I’m here, sure to be your guardian angel but I’m here because I also expect something from you ”

“I see that you are destroyed for what is happening in your miserable human life and I have a request to make and that will give you good profit”

“What?”

“Destroy your stalkers”

“What?!”

“Kill them, disintegrate them, make them disappear, Ka-boom!”

“You want to hurt them, don’t you? Hmm?”

“Think well, my dear! Not everyone escapes death”

“I know!” she took out a class photo which she kept in her bag.

“He is Simon. He is a boxing fighter. He is the one who hit me repeatedly when I was on the ground. And I have an idea to get rid of him”

A few minutes later, it’s time for a sports lesson (Alexiane had to change in the bathroom so as not to reproduce what happened). Until hearing a screeching howl that attracted everyone and saw the lifeless body of Simon, completely disfigured. It is a huge shock from this event,

A few days later, it was that of Petunia, Broken in two following numerous violent trampling until the column was broken. Then that of Elliot, who was found hanging with his arms tied in the air and beaten up again and again with a containing object leaving marks entirely visible.

And finally, on the last day of revenge, it is now time for Delphine’s. But this was very noticeable and difficult to reach so great help from Edwin was required to lure him into the trap. Alex gave her the sensitive points of it.

“I didn’t know you could do this!”she said

“There are things you don’t know, my dear ~.But stay impressed. ;) ”

Alexiane let out a small sneer of joy at her words.

“Hey, beautiful kid ~ I need help with something, could you come and help me ~? Said Delphine

"Yes, of course”

He leaves with her, out of Alexiane to prepare for the final plan.

“A piece of advice my pretty one, don’t come near her! She’s just useless waste.”

“Oh ~? And why so?”

“She is weak and vulnerable, so much less than nothing. She should die for her unnecessary existence.”

Edwin refrained from annihilating him right away for Alex’s plan and he came up with an idea to get him trapped.

“Come with me, baby ~ I have something for you that will make you happy ~”

“Oh ~ I would like to see that”

They leave the interior of the school to put it in a dead end wall and no way out. And they kissed for a long time until Alexiane found herself behind her and struck her on the neck.

She fell into the apples and took her to the equipment room while waiting for the night.

The night is there, Delphine woke up under the light close to her face and noticed that she was tied to a chair with rope.

“What is that? Untie me right away!”

“No no no, my pretty ~”

She turned around and saw him sitting next to her (He still has his transformation).

“You sick fellow! You did that! Untie me right away!”

“No … it’s me” and Alexiane appeared with a sharp, heavy object in her hand. “Did you sleep well, princess ~”

“YOU … I suspected that it is you who is behind all of this! You are disgusting and horrible! Psychopathic waste!”

“No. Delphine. You are the psychopath in history and the creator of your masterpiece. Look at me! You changed me …! You are the one who is at the origin of all this! Hahahaha!”

“You’re crazy, CRAZY! You and your bastard next door who …”

“HAHAHAHAHAH!” Edwin laughed at his words. “Hah! A bastard, let me show something my little one”

“So…? Scared?”

“Now that you’ve seen this, look at this!” She showed her back full of scars.

“I am going to throw up

"It’s not over, and that’s it!” She showed her defective eye. “It’s all your fault, you rotten my life, you destroyed everything I was and you destroyed me physically. And you’re going to suffer for that.” and she glared at him in front of her.

“… ha … HA … HAHAHAHAHHA! You! You are going to do nothing to me! You are so useless! Unable to act alone! You are weak, rotten and helpless. HAHAHAHHA!”

“Alex, give me the tool …”

“Yeah Alex, give him the tool ~. Him, he will be what to do. Compare to you who is nothing at all! HAHAHAHHAHA!

Alexiane trembled, clutching the sharp object firmly.

"So loser! You’re losing your temper! You don’t know how to use this object!”

“SHUT UP!” And she lifted it over her head and hit it over and over again, repeating the same words until it looked like nothing.

Alexiane stopped dead and saw what she did, she turned to Ed who was very surprised by his act. The truth, he didn’t know how to react. If he were to be praised or frightened. She trembled strongly until she fell to her knees and wept hot tears. Ed aggenouya towards her to calm her down but her tears were not tears of fear or sadness, but tears of joy. She finally felt free from her chain which made her consume slowly.

“Yes, my dear. Well done to you. Now we have to leave before someone sees us”

They fled with the object in their hands and quickly left school. They hid the tool away in the forest and he took it home (through the window of her room)

“Woah … What a delight, darling ~”

She sneered at his words and suddenly thought of something crazy.

“Do you have something in mind, dear?”

“What if … and if I go. With you.”

“Hmm?”

“I want to leave this world that destroyed me and live a life … exciting with you. And I believe that …” Killing “is so stimulating …” “Yes Ed! I want us to go far away from here ”

“Is this your dearest wish, My little angel?”

“Let me prepare something and we will leave”

After a few minutes of preparation, they left the house in silence.

“Where are we going now?” She says

“I know a place that will welcome destroyed souls. Don’t worry, you’re going to enjoy it there with me.”

And they disappeared in the dark smoke of the forest fog.

Small end bonus:

The little brother went to Alexiane’s room and saw that she was not there. The window was open and a letter was placed on the bed. He took it and read what was written:

“To the person who will read this letter”

I left the house without warning you, I’m sorry but I decided to leave for good this hell that I lived for a long time. I blame myself for never having told you, even behind my smile, I could not exorcise my pain. I suffered from harassment for a long time and decided to change my life differently. I left everything behind to start a new life elsewhere. I don’t want you to suffer from my pain for making such a change. But be sure, I’m fine, I’m going to get by on my own and I will never forget you.

Just for my last request, do not look for me, do not try to look for me or contact the police, they will not be of any help and utility. All I have is stay here.

Living your life every moment is very precious and I wish it to you too.

born michal אביבה glickman (pronounced michal aviva glickman) at 6:00am on april 22nd, 1998 to two loving parents; rabbi adam עקבא (akiva) glickman and deborah ברכה (bracha) glickman nee goldstein esq

name meanings time !

michal: biblical michal was king saul's daughter and first wife of david. in the biblical narrative, michal chooses the welfare of david over the wishes of her father. when saul's messengers search for david in order to kill him, michal sends them away while pretending she is ill and laid up in bed. she lets david down through a window and hides teraphim in his bed as a ruse. although she risked her life in helping him, after he leaves the court, he makes no attempt to contact her. after michal was returned to david, she criticized him for dancing in an undignified manner, as he brought the ark of the covenant to the newly captured jerusalem in a religious procession. for this she is punished, according to samuel, with not having children until the day she dies.

אביבה (aviva): a modern hebrew name meaning "springtime". it is related to the name of the israeli city tel aviv, as well as to the jewish holiday passover which occurs in the month of nisan, previously called aviv.

glickman: the name glickman is a proud symbol of ancient jewish culture. it is taken from the yiddish word glik, which means luck.

michal’s dad works as hemlock’s one and only resident conservative rabbi at temple shir shalom, located about a fifteen minute walk from the glickman family home. (i define conservative judaism as a happy medium between reform ~laid back judaism~ and orthodox StRiCt judaism, a conservative jew would probably punch me for saying that).

michal’s mom works as a corporate lawyer at some ugly mean bank that hates the environment and we don’t stan at all

they didn’t meet on j date but they met via j date’s predecessor, their grandmothers being best friends

the past !

the glickmans have been a member of high society in hemlock since their matriarch, michal’s great grandmother hadassah, came over during the holocaust. she immigrated easily, fitting right in with the crowd. an avid follower of practical kabbalah, a jewish mystic tradition concerning the use of magic, her uniqueness made her quite the popular person, and people began to pay large sums of money for her to interpret their dreams and read their palms.

hadassah was the last follower of kabbalah in her line, and her son cut off ties to the mystic tradition as soon as he was able to choose his own religious practices.

still the past but less far in the past !

michal’s upbringing was pretty standard for a white rich kid in a white rich town. she was brought to parties and events she didn’t want to go to, forced to wear cute dresses and shoes and things that she felt weird wearing. she wanted to run around outside, she didn’t want to eat gross appetizers at boring events and pretend like she wanted to be there.

as the years she spent on this earth grew, so did the amount of donor events and fundraising efforts and pairs of fancy shoes she owned. despite her expressing to her parents multiple times that this was not who she was, that these were not things she wanted to go to, they refused to listen to her and continued to drag her to the events against her will.

while they took care of her financially, they didn’t take care of her spiritually. she has a weird complicated relationship with her childhood, as it could have been so much worse, and in the grand scheme of things she was so lucky, but there were so many things she wished she could have done like go hiking and play basketball and be allowed to be herself, and missing out on that has really stopped her from letting her true self shine through, even now.

now, you may be asking yourself, “reed, how on earth does michal fit this label?” well, let me tell you!

when i hear high heels, i think of an old pair of dress shoes that you probably should’ve gotten rid of a while ago. they’re scuffed, a bit too small for you, and have lost the majority of their shine. michal is trapped in this idea of what her parents want her to be, and while she still squeezes into those high heels for important holidays and events that she is still forced to go to, it’s something that she does begrudgingly, and because she doesn’t want to start conflict.

on a retreat to charles mound, the highest point in illinois, during her sophomore year of high school, michal experienced what it was like to feel the presence of god. she took her shoes off, laid down in the grass, and closed her eyes. it was the first moment she was certain of anything

ever since then, michal’s point of view on spirituality and religion has changed drastically, and she has become much more in touch with the world around her. she practices her judaism through gardening, leading environmental protests (sometimes against her mother’s company, she’s got no clue how she’s managed to avoid getting caught for that), and going on lots of hikes and adventures

it was a moment of clarity for her, her first opportunity to really be who she wanted to and needed to be

he’s worked with some dwarven mechanisms in his day, but i’m going to usurp the “technical” part of this and make it “magical skills” instead. he’s quite the master, hence, archmage. knows a wide variety of spells from all schools, but is a legend in destruction, conjuration, and especially mysticism, which he took a five year sabbatical of sorts to study with the psijics on artaeum. he showed to have a knack for the kind of “paradoxical experimentation” which fueled mystical research and spellcrafting. he’s not got the greatest of magicka reserves, like the altmer or breton masters, but he knows how to utilize it to greatest effect by utilizing his full repertoire of spells to conserve and efficiently expend it. he’s also done a fair bit of research into alchemy and enchanting: he worked with sinderion to further research the nirnroot and its uses in potions (and poisons), and he studied several of the daedric artifacts he acquired during his adventuring years to discover more about how such powerful enchanted objects were made. in short, he’s archmage for good reason.

Peace

My roommate and I were nothing but opposite poles; we never agreed on anything. Remember the law of attraction? No, it is not what you think. It is a fact that the opposite poles attract, and that is true only in magnets. But with people and relationships, that gets complicated, like those twisted and tangled earphones which pisses you off. With those twisted and complicated relationships, we were still going strong because we were clear on couple of things – Respect each other, zero judgements and never sleep on a fight. Now that when I go back and think these three qualities can take you a long way in any relations and friendship was no exception. As we had different perspectives towards life, we fought for everything until she gives up on me or vice versa. Later, we would go out on date nights to sustain the balance or in a gromance style – to rekindle our relationship. One such date nights, she tricked me into agreeing to a trip to Switzerland as she promised me that we would visit Rome, one of my dream destinations. One month later, I was on a flight traveling to Swiss to fulfill my friend’s dream of going to the DDLJ (for those who don’t know, DDLJ is a blockbuster Bollywood movie) shooting spot. We had a last-minute travel companion who wished to join us for the trip, and we were happy to let her join us… More the people, the less I need to tolerate with my roommate. So, three girls traveling from London to Switzerland in the coldest month. To be honest, I had trekked towards the mighty Himalayas just few months before that and I wasn’t ready to believe that any other mountain ranges will be mightier than our very own gigantic desi mountains. Not able to hear my continuous glorification of Himalayan rages, she shunned me and turned the earphones and acted as if she didn’t care about me. I was silently gazing outside the flight, humming the famous song of DDLJ ‘Tujhe dekha to yeh jaana sanam’ until we landed there. By the way, for exotic experience, we booked a home-stay far away from the main city and it nearly takes 2 hours for us to travel from airport to our home-stay. After speaking with the personnel at information center, we got a map of the city and of bus routes. Briefly glancing at the maps for few minutes, we identified our bus route and took the bus to reach our home stay. After the tedious travel in bus for hours, suddenly, only three of us were there in the bus then and few minutes later the driver claimed that it was our stop. We stared at each other’s face and slowly got down from the bus as if it was a slo-mo video. It was extremely dark over there and the bus stop was deserted. Being a girl gang of three in unknown foreign location, we were petrified and went to our mobile for rescue to reach the owner of AirBnB. Guess what? There was no signal over there. After ranting out at each other for a minute, we realized we had to calm down and try to find out our home-stay. We saw a house in a distance and we quickly crossed the small bridge to reach that house and we rang the doorbell for very first house we saw and after all, one of us was lucky, or maybe all of us were. Hooray, that was our home stay. After all, we had reached the correct destination. As soon as we entered the place, an old couple welcomed us, and I must say they were very hospitable. It was felt like those warm sunny mornings after those shivering nights. Finally, we went upstairs to our rooms and was talking about how great adventure was today and things turned up to be more than ‘just fine’! (But, for the records, if that hadn’t gone well, I would have totally blamed her). Also, I was little skeptical about the trip even then as I didn’t see anything which amazed me. I was sure that night, if the next morning didn’t turn out as expected, I would pack my bags and start to Italy. The next morning, I got up around 7ish, opened the door and walked towards the restroom. There was a narrow passage that lead to the restroom from our room. That passage had a window on the other side. Instead of going to the restroom, I walked towards the window on the other side and I opened the window. My jaws dropped for a whole minute and I couldn’t believe my eyes. Like an ostrich, I swiftly ran back to the room and woke my roommate up like a maniac. After few seconds of torments from me, she got up from the bed and stretched her body. I utilized those stretches and took the nearest scarf to blind-folded her. She tried to untie her blind fold, but I wouldn’t let that happened, would I? :D To ensure that she doesn’t remove her blindfolds, I held her hands and carefully took her towards the window in the narrow passage and then, I started narrating a small story to her. “Growing as a kid watching Morgan Freeman disguised as The God with the white background area, I always imagined that He lives in the place which symbolizes the color of peace. After couple of years, with true devotion I started admiring Lord Shiv as I was able to relate with him as a commoner – A short tempered handsome chunk who lives on a hill station covered with snow, dancing to let out his anger and also his romance, I was totally able to relate to him. Morgan Freeman's 'Bruce Almighty' and Lord Shiva's Kailash had one thing in common" Until then she was silently listening my story (also she has no choice), but when I poked her with questions, she was furious and yelled about hijacking her and giving her puzzles. As and when I reached near the window, I asked the question again, Morgan Freeman's 'Bruce Almighty' and Lord Shiva's Kailash had one thing in common. And then I unwrapped the scarf from her. And then, I said, Morgan Freeman's 'Bruce Almighty', Lord Shiva's Kailash and the present moment had one thing in common. She was astonished by what she saw and slowly uttered , W-H-I-T-E Yes, the solid colour WHITE. White is the colour of peace. White is the colour of plain innocence. White is the colour of purity. White is the colour of safety. White is the colour of heaven. (May be that’s why Angels wear white colours) 😊” We were surrounded by those snow filled mystically beautiful mountains. We spent our entire day in stating at these mountains and cancelled all the touristy thing we were supposed to do. This is Lucren city in Switzerland. The thing which I learnt that day nature can surprise you the most, of course, after life. There is nothing more beautiful that the nature itself and no two mountains are same, And similarly, no two men are same neither their life nor their skills/capabilities. Give yourself a chance, no compare yourself with others. You are unique just like those tall beautiful mountains of Swiss. The Home-stay

you don’t know how much i love gushing about otome games and my harem of husbandos (also lmao i’ve outed my terrible tastes here)

pc games

steam prison // so so good, definitely recommend! my only complaint is that you can’t romance Good Boi finn (by proxy depriving us of that wonderful cyrus/sachsen banter), but i guess i can settle for adage lmao. hits a very good balance between humour and seriousness, but it’s a really long game to complete

nightshade // honestly, one of my absolute favourites ever. ost is kickass, sprites are gorgeous, and the plot is pretty good. they’re literally all such good beans ugh i love them all. depending on the play order you do, and whether you do the bad ends or not, it can be not-too-painful sad to wow-just-rip-my-heart-out-and-stomp-on-it sad. goemon is honestly the best though, just saying

hakuouki // i’d recommend both games, but if you can’t afford it, then get edo blossoms, since that’s where most of the romance is. also, they get their western uniforms in that one!!! hachiro is still my best boi (sorry okita, heisuke, harada, and everyone else). suuuuuper long to play through, i think it took me ~60 hrs to complete everything, but it’s a labour of love

amnesia // okay, i trashtalk this a lot, but it’s a solid game except for when they did my boi toma dirty >:c ikki is definitely best boi though. some routes are better than others (read: toma’s route is pretty meh while everyone else has pretty great ones), but ukyo arguably has the best and saddest one. i feel like this is almost an otome staple at this point lmao

nameless // another classic and favourite of mine! yandere galore, more than a little heartbreaking, and wow just wow overall. they’re all such sweet guys (yes, tei and ??? included), and the side characters are all fantastic and very memorable. it’s kinda long though, i think 50+ hrs to finish everything, but oh my god is it worth it. i teared up quite a few times

ozmafia!! // a controversial choice, but i loved all the characters in it, and in the end, the plot did pay off. it just feels like a very cramped and rushed game at times, but the characters make up for it, honestly. i’m just mad over how they did my boi hamelin so fricking dirty #JusticeForHamelin #HamelinDidNothingWrong yes i’m still salty about it

cinderella phenomenon // highly recommend this one since it’s free! it’s probably my favourite oelvn to date -- beautiful art, great storyline, and wonderful characters except when they did my boi varg so so dirty :c the last 2 routes are definitely more painful than the first 3, and way more important to the plot.

the rose of segunda //another oelvn i highly recommend! pretty, a great read, and lovable characters. there’s a secret romance too, and holy god it was so good! frederique and mc are so great together, and i honestly fell so hard for leopold because w o w i love me an ambitious man like him

monochrome heaven* // i have so many feelings about this one, but i’ll still recommend it lol. it’s very...depressing and can get difficult to read at times. honestly, it says a lot when the worst boi turns out to be the best boi. i remember just feeling so hollow after finishing the game, but it was worth the hours i invested

‘till death do us part* // a very questionable addition to this list, but i really liked it. marcus and jack are probably the most ‘romantic’ of the bunch, but i guess it’s not really an otome game

boyfriend to death 1 & 2* // 2 more questionable choices a la the above, but i enjoyed them both. lawrence, damien, and strade were my favourite guys

mobile games

ikemen sengoku // l o o k, i’m a sucker for the sengoku era, beautiful art, and great casting choices for voices okay??? i like playing softer and more light-hearted games sometimes, and this is the perfect game for that. honestly, every single guy is likable and none of them treat mc terribly (yes, including the yandere, the snek, and the playboy).

ikemen revolution // honestly, the same as the above. a great light read, lovable cast, and beautiful art. also, super stoked for mousse atlas to get over here because i’ve already decided that i’m completely in love with him

ikemen vampire // yeah, i know this isn’t out yet in english, but from what i played of jpn and what i’ve read of translations, i love it already. kinda feels like fate meets otome, and i love all the character designs, voices, and concepts

samurai love ballad party // like ikemen sengoku, but angstier lmao. i don’t really like the art and the sprites, but the story and characters are great, so i don’t really mind. i just wish my faves would stop being such disasters (ieyasu, sakuya, nobuyuki, kotaro)

love and producer/mr love queen’s choice // HAVE I TOLD YOU ABOUT MY LORD AND SAVIOUR BAI QI/GAVIN???? if you’ve played love nikki, it’s the same kind of grind, but i don’t even care??? the cards are beautiful??? the bois are all so wonderful and cute and perfect (yes, even shady af scientist)???? have i told you how wonderful and perfect my husband bai gege is??? also, download the japanese voice pack, the eng dub is kinda crappy

mystic messenger // so time-consuming, but so addicting lol. very fun, surprisingly dark, and all the characters are great (except for rika, we all hate rika). 707 is my home boi, but saeran is fantastic and i demand a proper unknown route because i want to get terrified by this lovely edgy angsty kid

my last first kiss // i can sell this in 3 words -- childhood friend romance. like, that’s my jam right there. i love the guys and their relationships with mc (fussy ayato is so cute, and mako and taka are so so sweet with mc). super fun and sweet read

lust in terror manor* // an elusive horror otome! it’s too bad it never got properly completed, but i guess there’s some kind of closure? translation’s kinda crappy, but good enough to read. rui and naoto were kinda meh, but hayato was the best boi, sorry i don’t make the rules.

several shades of sadism* // okay i can explain -- i love trashmen, i love guys with serious emotional baggage, and i love guys with flaws that make them oh so very real. minato is my favourite trashbag and i actually almost cried during his route because even though he’s an asshole, he’s really trying his best

cinderella contract* // this is where you realize i have no taste/standards whatsoever. trashy, i know, but goddamn i’m so invested in this. yuri is the trashiest of them all, and therefore he’s my husband sorry i don’t make the rules

princess of the moon* // ah yes, the trashiest of the trashy and i’m so ashamed i read this, let alone enjoy it as much as i do. very very smutty but i’m disappointed my boi dean didn’t get released on the og app
