OAK GALL INK
I decided to finally make some myrrh oak gall ink. Gall ink is made by combining oak galls and ferrous sulfide (an iron extract of sorts). Gall ink has historically been a popular ink due to its rich black color compared to soot, however the iron content can dissolve fragile parchment. I added myrrh resin (as per the PGM) and gum arabic (to thicken). I also added a little alcohol and some essential oil for scent.
Here is the reaction that occurs when you mix the gall powder and iron solution. The black is striking!

The Sun Reborn: A Devotional Rite
Below is a ritual I have devised, whose words are taken from The Azoetia: A Grimoire of the Sabbatic Craft. Although the rite is intended to be performed during the winter’s solstice, it could also be adapted to be used whenever one feels like the fire of their spirit needs a rekindling.
1. The Winter’s Eve
During the sunset of the eve of the winter’s solstice, recite the Proclamation of the Living Temple whilst facing west. Then, whilst bathing yourself in the light of the setting sun, recite the Adoration of the Setting Sun. Imagine the light of the setting sun becoming one with the light of your soul.
PROCLAMATION OF THE LIVING TEMPLE
I go forth in mine own Chosen Body, the Temple of all Gods. Crown’d am I with the Stellar Fire entwined about the Horns of the Ancient One. There is no part of me that is not I. My Hair is of the Cords that bind, scourge and bless: the Sheaves of the Harvest and the Serpents of Fear; the Crown of the Fields, of Flower and Leaf; the Crown of the Sky, the Threads that join the Stars, fair as the silk of the Moth and fine as the Spider’s strand. My Face is the Sun and the Fullness of the Moon, the Circle of the Horizons and the Black Mirror of the Depths: Masks beyond Number concealing the Face of I. My Skull is the Conclave of the One Spirit; mine is the Blessing, mine is the Curse. For I am the Voice of the Oracle. My Eyes are the Twin Shewstones of Twilight, the Dawn and the Dusk. Bright as the Star of Morning, bright as the Star of Evening. Their Gaze, sharp as that of any Bird, pierceth all things. Unto I is the Offering: the Sight of Virgin Beauty never-fading. My Ears are Witness to Truth, attentive to them that speak it. Unto I is the Offering: the Rhythms of Power and the Words of Calling, the Voice of the Ancestors, the Oracle of the Mighty Ones. May the Musick Celestial be heard and Inspiration given. My Nose is the Guide of the Great Hunt, Keen as that of the Stag and the Dog. Unto I is the Offering: all Scents that please and rouse the Heart. My Mouth is the Temple of the Serpent’s Tongue, a Devourer of Souls and a Receiving Chalice. May I drink of the Muses’ Fount and taste of the Feast Divine; may I partake of the first-fruits sacrificed unto the Gods. My Hands are the Shrines of Creation and Destruction. My Skin is the Vestment of Priest and Priestess. My Blood is the Ink of the Book. My Shadow is the Twin. Goddess and God am I, conjoined in their Shadows: the Double Twin Image of the Quintessential and Primeval I.
ADORATION OF THE SETTING SUN
Hail to Thee, O’ Mighty Sun at Thy Setting! Aged art Thou and grown in wisdom. Joyous is Thy twilight hour in the Palace of the Day. Joyous is Thy Heart at the Gates of Death and Sleep. stick, Joyous is Thy descent into the Palace of the Night. Thus am I grown in age and in wisdom. Joyous is this twilight hour in the Palace of the Day. Joyous is my heart at the Gates of Death and Sleep. Enduring is my strength, Joyous is my descent into the Palace of the Night. Hail to Thee! Ancient Father and Ancient King.Crowned art Thou with the Splendour of the Dusk. Adorned art Thou with the bountiful riches of Autumn. Guardian art Thou to the Gate of the Oracle. Blessed art Thou that Thy Light sustaineth the Life of the Earth. Hail to Thee, O’ Mighty Sun at Thy Setting! By the Power of all Thine Ancient Names.
2. The Winter’s Solstice
On the night of the winter’s solstice (ideally at midnight), recite the Proclamation of the Living Temple whilst facing north. Then, under the shadows of the night sky, light a candle and recite the Adoration of the Sun of the Deep. Imagine the light of the candle being akin to the light of your soul, enduring and bright in spite of the darkness around you.
ADORATION OF THE SUN OF THE DEEP
Hail to Thee, O’ Mighty Sun of the Deep! Most Holy art Thou in Death: A Mighty God in the Company of the Ancestors; A Concealed God in the Palace of the Night. Enduring is the Light of Thy Spirit. Thus I am strong in Death. Mighty am I in the Company of the Ancestors. Concealed is my Spirit in the Palace of the Night. Enduring is the Light of my Soul. Hail to Thee, Heart of the Earth, Kindred of the Imperishable Stars! Crowned art Thou with the Splendour of the Midnight Hour. Adorned art Thou with the nakedness of Winter. Robed art Thou with the mantle of the Night-sky, Blessed art Thou, that Thy Light hath strength in the midst of Darkness. Hail to Thee in the Congregation of the Holy Stars! By the Power of all Thy Secret and Unknown Names.
3. The Dawn After
At the first light of dawn — the first break of daylight after the winter’s solstice — stand outside and face east. Recite the Proclamation of the Living Temple whilst greeting the rising sun. Take a jar of honey with you and catch the sunlight in the jar of honey. Recite the Adoration of the Rising Sun and then swallow the honey, imbued with the properties of the sun reborn.
ADORATION OF THE RISING SUN
Hail to Thee, O’ Mighty Sun at Thy rising! Newborn art Thou into the Palace of the Day. Replenished is Thy Strength as Thou risest from Death and the Palace of the Night. Thus newborn am I into the Palace of the Day. Replenished is my Strength as I arise from sleep and the Palace of the Night. Hail to Thee! Child Eternal in Thy Beauty! Crowned art Thou with the Splendour of Dawn, Adorned art Thou with the Blossoms of Spring, Holy art Thou in Divine Innocence. Blessed art Thou that Thy Light sustaineth the Life of Earth. Hail to Thee, O’ Mighty Sun at Thy rising! By the Power of all Thine Ancient Names.
This ritual is inspired by PGM I. 1-42 which tells the practitioner to “take the milk with the honey and drink it before the rising of the sun, and there will be something divine in your heart.” The purpose of the Proclamation of the Living Temple is to remind the body that it comes from the same dust as the stars, that everything from its hair to its skin to even its shadow is sacred. In essence, the Proclamation of the Living Temple serves as a way to sanctify the body. The Adorations of the Sun, consequently, act as a way to sanctify the soul by drawing parallels between the sun and our very soul.
This ritual is quite experimental and I confess that I was unable to perform the ritual in full during this year’s winter solstice due to physical exhaustion and work obligations. Nevertheless, I am confident that the ritual will bring rejuvenation to all who perform it. Regardless, please do perform some divination on whether you should perform the ritual or not, just in case there may be some unforeseen side effects.

"In summary therefore, the main conclusions of this thesis are:
i) There is a considerable amount of commonality between the methods and equipment of magic in the PGM, Hygromanteia and Clavicula Salomonis.
ii) There is a clear line of transmission from the Hygromanteia to the Clavicula Salomonis which is identifiable down to the very detailed level of Solomonic method and specific pieces of equipment. Therefore there can be no doubt that the Hygromanteia is the forefather of the Clavicula Salomonis.
iii) There are two main exceptions to the above point:
a) The skrying chapters in the Hygromanteia, have not been passed on to the Clavicula Salomonis. These skrying methods are however found almost word-forword in an 11th century Jewish source. Accordingly, either Jewish sources supplied these chapters to the Hygromanteia, or were derived from it.
b) The pentacles chapters in the Clavicula Salomonis do not derive from the Hygromanteia, but probably come from the manuscript Sepher ha-Otot, or from a related source.
iv) There is no clear line of transmission between the PGM and the Hygromanteia, but the high degree of commonality makes it certain that the PGM was a major contributor to the contents of the Hygromanteia. The Testament of Solomon was also shown to be an important contributor to the Hygromanteia.
v) A number of magical techniques were identified, such as precise timing of rites by day, hour and Moon phase, strict purification, fasting, use of specific incenses, use of shared nomina magica, and techniques such as threatening spirits with the names of their superiors, or the impersonation of a god to ensure compliance from the spirit.
vi) Equipment used for protection of the magician including the protective floor circle and the phylactery/ourania/lamen, are common to all three texts.
vii) There is a definite sequence to the procedures of ‘Solomonic magic’, foreshadowed in the PGM, but precisely defined in the Hygromanteia and the Clavicula Salomonis, and identified as the ‘Solomonic method.’
viii) The pentacle section of the Clavicula Salomonis was derived from the Sepher ha-Otot, or a cognate Hebrew source. A crude cut-down version of these pentacles was used in the Hygromanteia to construct the ourania/lamen, and the pentacles found in versions of the Clavicula Salomonis are less detailed, and with less complete Hebrew. Therefore either the Sepher ha-Otot is contributory to both the Hygromanteia and the Clavicula Salomonis, or a common ancestor informed all three texts.
ix) The meaning of -µαντεια as used in chapters 47-58 of the Hygromanteia embraces evocation and skrying as well as just divination.
x) Although Hebraic god names like Adonai, Iaō and Sabaoth are frequently found in the PGM, the Hygromanteia and Clavicula Salomonis, they were divorced from the methods of Jewish magic.
xi) The Sepher Maphteah Shelomoh manuscript of 1700, instead of being evidence of the Jewish roots of Solomonic magic, was in fact a translation of a Latin/Italian manuscript of the Clavicula Salomonis, and therefore not its source.
xii) A full set of correspondences of stones, herbs and beasts, has become split off from the Hygromanteia, prior to 1440, leaving just a few zodiacal and planetary herbal correspondences. These correspondences reappear in other grimoires, such as the Sepher Raziel, or in separate lapidaria, herbaria or bestiaries, but are not carried forward into the Clavicula Salomonis.
xiii) The so-called Mithrasliturgie, is neither a Mithraic text nor the liturgy of any religion, nor is it a magical text, but a procedure for a solitary Mystery rite, designed to confer immortality upon just one initiate.
xiv) A new translation for the Ephesia Grammata has been proposed, as an example of how knowledge of the techniques can sometimes help to decipher the meaning of nomina magica.
Speculative Conclusions about the origins of the Hygromanteia:
xv) The date of composition of the Hygromanteia was probably late 6th/early 7th century, with a major redaction occurring in the early 13th century.
xvi) The place of composition of the Hygromanteia was probably Alexandria, with the text being subsequently taken to Constantinople. The author was Greek educated and not a Christian.
xvii) The Hygromanteia may have been written or compiled by Stephanos of Alexandria (and Athens) in the late 6th century, and brought by him to Constantinople.
xviii) The title Hygromanteia was originally only applied to the last chapters 47-59.
ix) The most likely title of the Hygromanteia is The Magical Treatise of Gathering and Directing the Spirits, or the Magical Treatise, although it was probably originally called the Ἀποτελεσµατικὴ πραγµατεία."

Appendix: A Note on Gnostic Cheese.
The question of the depths of François Lenormant’s knowledge of the papyri he described in his catalogue has already been raised, and a further instructive instance of a possible error in his interpretation of the Theban Library texts can be found in his description of the beginning of PGM IV, specifically an Old Coptic invocation to Osiris contained in ll. 11-25:
En tête sont trois pages de copte, qui débutent par l’histoire d’un fromage mystique, pour la composition duquel s’associent Osiris, Sabaoth, Iao, Jésus et tous les autres éons. Ce fromage n’est autre que la gnose.
trans: ‘At the beginning are three pages of Coptic, which begin with the story of a mystical cheese, for whose creation Osiris, Sabaoth, Iao, Jesus, and all the other aeons come together. This cheese is no other than gnosis.’
Lenormant’s “mystic cheese” (“fromage mystique”), more often cited as “gnostic cheese” (“fromage gnostique”), has become proverbial as an example of the dismissive attitude of scholars of the mid-nineteenth century towards magical material, cited by Preisendanz and Brashear, among others. Examples of such an attitude towards the magical papyri are not difficult to find, even among the later authors who made a career out of their study: Dieterich called PGMIV an “abschreckenden Schutthaufen” (trans: ‘terrifying rubbish heap’), while Eitrem referred to them as “relics of degenerate religions and of the human mind gone astray.” However, “fromage” in French refers only to the food made from cultured milk curd, and lacks the derogatory sense of “nonsense” which is present in the German “Käse,” and, to a lesser extent, in the English “cheese.” In fact, it seems that Lenormant believed he really had discovered a story in which Osiris, Jesus, and the other aeons create a Gnostic cheese.
(Dosoo, K. 2016. ‘A History of the Theban Magical Library’ in The Bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists Vol. 53. Pp. 251-274).

Magical Gemstones: An Abridged Guide
Magical gemstones are a type of talisman made of semiprecious stones —such as hematite, carnelian or amethyst— that were worn set in rings or as pendants and their size ranges from 1.5 cm to 3 cm.These gemstones haven't magical, protective characteristics because of the nature of the gem itself but because the representations of Gods and holy names carved conceded them virtues through holy dynamis: This is, among other things, the inherent power of divine names and/or their representations.
These depictions are normally inverted (negative) This, together with the fact that some of the gems show a certain degree of worn indicates that they were manipulated in some way—probably rubbed or even licked, in order to increase their efficacy—proves that they were not conceived as seals but as amulets or talismans.
A magical gemstone, to be considered as such, should have one or more of the following elements:
An iconographic language generally belonging to syncretic Gods or that combines Gods from different origins.
Charakteres (magical signs. They can be planetary, protective, etc.)
Voces magicae (Words of power and phrases whose formulation and structure may hide secret, sacred names of Gods as well as prayers or incantations dedicated to them, sometimes with the intention of controlling their emanations and daimonēs) and logoi (magical names, permutation of magical names and vocals).
Tumblr media
The practice and use of magical voices was transmitted orally across the eastern Mediterranean, but it wasn't until the early 1st century b.c.e. the practice began to be included in written form. The abundance of amulets and gems with magical names and signs are evidence of this change of paradigm.
In addition, elements are usually complemented by two structural features:
The gemstone is engraved on both the obverse and the reverse, sometimes even on the edge.
The inscription appears directly and not in mirror writing.
These magic gemstones, in addition, can be magical gemstones stricto sensu and amuletic gems. The latter differ from the former in:
That the iconographic patterns they contain are explicitly described as belonging to amulets in textual sources such as Posidippus's Lithika
They bear a prophylactic inscription, usually "diaphylasse" (protect me!), "sōzon" (save me!) or "Heis Theos" (One God).
Its production began during the late Hellenistic period, but it was not until the 2nd and 4th centuries c.e. that it reached its apogee. Magical gemstones' imagery demonstrates the diversity and plurality of Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Egyptian, Christian, Gnostic and Jewish representations and ideas from the Mediterranean from the Roman period, as well as the popularity and diversity of magical activities and practices.
Tumblr media
These magic gemstones were rarely used for evil purposes, such as harming someone. Their most common use was to offer protection or solve personal health problems: those showing an ibis tied by an altar and including the command "pésse!" (digest) were used to heal indigestion and other stomach problems; others, depicting a uterus, offered represented a womb, offered protection during childbirth and guaranteed fertility.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although most of these magic gemstones were used as jewelry, it is possible that they also had other uses, as part of a ritual to heal a patient or as a physical component for an incantation, such as those with depictions of Harpocrates seated on a lotus the nomina magica Bainchōōōch (Bainchōōōch, Ba of the Shadow, isn't only a vox magica/nomina magica but a God on their own right. PGM aside, Bainchōōōch appears in Pistis Sophia as a triple powered deity that descends onto Jesus, giving him his powers)
Tumblr media
An interesting fact is that of the production of magical gemstones during the 17th and 18th centuries of our era. Although the production of these gems continued during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance —irregularly, of course— they reflected the magical and religious reflected the magical and religious practices of their historical context.
This, however, was not the case during the 17th and 18th centuries, where magical gemstones of great quality and sophistication were produced, which not only reproduced the iconographic motifs and logoi of the pre-existing graeco-egyptian magic gemstones, but also introduced new ones. An example of these gems are those with representations of Christ-Osiris or Jesus-Khepri

Because my brain is enormous and I already have the Pierce spinoff show outlined and casted, meet the PGM executives:
Callista Vaughn, CFO (FC Susan Sarandon)
Tumblr media
She's a cutthroat and aggressive businesswoman who is always looking out for number one, followed by the company. She thinks Rhea is too weak and too trusting (she's right) but is protective of her. She's also very interested in fucking Cyd Peach (in business) and fucking Cyd Peach (in bed). Of the board members, she gets along best with Marnie. Follows Karl's foodstagram without realizing it's him.
Laura Blackwell, General Counsel (FC Kathy Bates)
Tumblr media
Laura is a straight shooter who has worked at PGM for decades, since before Nan was chairwoman. As such, she's a close confidante to her who doesn't hesitate to call her out on her bullshit. When Rhea was hired, she immediately clocked Nan's interest in her, and her first question was "You two fuck yet?" People are lowkey afraid of her, but she doesn't know why. Her drink of choice is gin and tonic.
Abigail Marin, Head of PGN (FC Claire Danes)
Tumblr media
Abigail genuinely believes in doing good journalism and values integrity above all else. She's always positive and optimistic, and consistently receives the best feedback from her staff during performance appraisal season (she's a little smug about this). She runs election night like the navy, however, and always delivers a flawless broadcast. Her guilty pleasure is fast food.
Clara Walters, Nan's Personal Assistant (FC Jessica Brown Findlay)
Tumblr media
Like Rhea, she doesn't come from money, which creates a sense of camaraderie between them. She could be trusted with the nuclear codes, and makes the impossible happen for her ridiculous billionaire of choice on a daily basis. She cares for Nan, but keeps personal involvement to a minimum (they both prefer this). Of all the execs, she gets along best with Laura. Strawberry is her favorite flavor of sweets.
Bob Murphy, COO (FC Stanley Tucci)
Tumblr media
As the token man on the team, he is just happy to be included. He drinks his respect women juice and generally does what the others tell him. Mild mannered and exceedingly normal, he enjoys spending time with his grandkids, his dog, and building miniatures. He doesn't drink, and immediately noticed that Rhea doesn't either. He can make conversation with almost anyone.

Chaldean Oracle Verse 147, Gate of Man and Gate of Immortals, Cancer/Capricorn, and Daniel.
Tumblr media
If you speak to me often, you will perceive everything in lion-form. For neither does the curved mass of heaven appear then nor do the stars shine. The light of the moon is hidden, and the earth is not firmly secured, but everything is seen by flashes of lightning.
If you often invoke me all things will appear to you to be a lion. For neither will the convex bulk of heaven then be visible; the stars will not shine; the light of the moon will be concealed; the earth will not stand firm; but all things will be seen in thunder.
Disclaimer: This post is part of my original line of posts of my own blog where I...you guessed I ramble about stuff even if I am wrong because why not. Take it with a grain of salt AND if you actually know what the verse actually mean and want to correct me please go ahead.
In the sixth hour you have the form of a lion; your name is ΒΑΙ ΣΟΛΒΑΙ (BAI SOLBAI), the ruler of time.
"the light of the moon is hidden" reference to Cancer.
Summer tropic is in Cancer, and the winter tropic in Capricorn. And since Cancer is nearest to us, it is very properly attributed to the Moon, which is the nearest of all the heavenly bodies to the earth. But as the southern pole, by its great distance, is invisible to us, hence Capricorn is attributed to Kronos (Saturn)
in On the Cave of the Nymphs by Porphyry:
Homer was not satisfied with saying that it had two gates, but adds that one of the gates was turned towards the north, but the other which was more divine, to the south. He also says that the northern gate was pervious to descent, but does not indicate whether this was also the case with the southern gate. For of this, he only says, "It is inaccessible to men, but it is the path of the immortals
You can kinda see the similar gnosis/insight people have to associate Helios with Hecate in that sense if you attribute this oracle line to Hecate like Psellus did.
Porphyry clearly states that the signs from Cancer to Capricorn, which constitute the descent of a soul into a body, are situated in the following order: and the first of these is Leo, which is the house of Helios (the Sun); afterwards Virgo, which is the house of Hermes (Mercury); Libra, the house of Aphrodite (Venus); Scorpius, of Ares (Mars); Sagittarius, of Zeus (Jupiter); and Capricornus, of Kronos (Saturn). “But from Capricorn,” he adds, the ascent is naturally “in an inverse order.” That is, in an inverse order on the opposing curve of the wheel of the zodiac. Aquarius is attributed to Kronos; Pisces, to Zeus; Aries, to Ares; Taurus, to Aphrodite; Gemini, to Hermes; and in the last place Cancer to the Selene (the Moon), only upon the soul’s descent into a body is the sun’s sign (Leo) encountered. This is basically the whole dichotomy of Metatron and Sandalphon, because you get that similar connection between Malkuth/Kether and Enoch/Elijah, what I see personally is this hinting toward merkavah and Hekhalot literature where you descened to the chariot/merkavah. In a way I can definitely say the hints are astrologically coded but the practice itself isn't astrological strictly.
the whole descent into mysteries is in that verse, the curved mass of heaven nor do star shine IS THE LITERAL HEAVEN if you scry them or work through the gates of merkavah. The light of the moon is hidden and earth is not secured because you're reaching a place that's not "here" in the objective sense of the world, everything is seen by flashes of lighting is very apt way to describe how you actually see stuff there! almost very reminiscent of dreamy visions where everything is remembered haphazardly !
In summary the astrological hints are just symbolic not practically invalid but not restrictive into it, since the sun/lion-form is the first thing that come after Saturn in descent and last thing before Moon then you can see the hint THERE. It's not lion, but the sun which when it shine so brightly it will hide the rays of the moon, you can see that the sun is both what we can fall into and we can rise through.
I definitely felt very excited to share my hot take about this oracle line, because it is rather very related to some other blogs that I did work with. Now...dare I say that these lion forms is what Daniel saw in the pit when he got thrown? notice how Daniel immediately start having visions after the lion pits from Daniel 6 to 7, it is an immediate jump.
