*chuckles* I’m insane
Anyway, here are all the settlements/important locations in the world of Horizon from both games. I tried to get them as close to the real world locations as possible although there was a lot of guesswork involved. The game maps are definitely distorted or scaled differently from the real world so stuff didn’t always fit exactly where it should.
Plainsong and Scalding Spear were both frustrating too because they’re based on real-world places but those places are nowhere close to where they appear in the game map. So I went with the approximate location of where they would be because having them stuck way off somewhere didn’t feel right.
I made this for my own fanfiction purposes because it was bothering me to read how Aloy could spend a day traveling between Vegas and San Francisco in other fics and I am too hung up on realism lmao. So I will be trying to stick to real world distances and travel time estimates in mine I think. But if you see anything that looks incorrect or know something more about real-world places, let me know and I will update it! Anyone is welcome to use this as a reference if they’d like, and I’d actually like to find a way to share the real Google Earth map to interact with it.

That face you make when you restart Horizon Zero Dawn (again..again) as research for your fic, but it means you have to watch Rost die (again...again)

🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
ROST.
He couldn't tell her that even though leaving her hurt her terribly, it affected him in a way she couldn't understand.
He couldn't tell her the reason she wouldn't understand was because she didn't know he once had a family.
He couldn't tell her she gave him life after the loss of his wife, daughter and tribe.
He couldn't tell her that raising Aloy brought him peace.
He couldn't tell Aloy the necklace was his daughter's.
He couldn't even tell Aloy that he viewed her AS his daughter.
He couldn't tell her any of these because he wanted her to be with the tribe. To embrace the tribe and way of life that he respected. He wanted her to find the peace she had brought him.
He couldn't tell her he loved her so he told her to SURVIVE.
😭😭😭😭😭
PLUS SIDE
you get to hear Aloy say
"oh this is the Hunter's cabin? With you guarding I assumed it was the latrine"
And
"oh are you going to shut your mouth? Because THAT would be a surprise"

"before each of you lies a prayer lantern crafted by your mother"
so here's the question: when was it crafted? while she was pregnant? in the leadup to the proving? after the child's birth?
We know Teersa crafted a lantern for Aloy, which could indicate that if for some reason the mother cannot do it a matriarch will take on the task. Which, I can see that. They're supposed to be the mothers of the tribe and all.
And as a High Matriarch, permitted inside the sacred cave, Teersa might have felt as though she was crafting the lantern for the sake of All-Mother, who of course has no mortal hands with which to craft.
I really am curious, though, since we already know of at least one character with a dead mother. What happens when it's Arana's turn to run the Proving? Will it be Thok who crafts the lantern, or one of Arana's grandmothers, should they still be alive? What about kids orphaned by the red raids?
--huh. maybe the art books have something to say on that--
alas, they do not.
guess it's up to conjecture, headcanons, and fanfic to address this.

A brief analysis of the tribes of Horizon and their equivalent DnD counterpart races. Pt.1
The Horizon games Zero Dawn and Forbidden West introduce us to a variety of tribes with a variety of different cultures, styles, weapons, and customs. As I have explored the fandom I have begun comparing each tribe to classic fantasy races. Initially I used the Tolkien races but switched to Dungeons and Dragons for more variety. So without further ado, lets begin. I had intended to do all of this in one post but it's getting a little longer than expected. So this is going to be a series of shorter posts doing a single tribe at a time. I hope anyone reading finds this at least a little interesting.
The Nora, or Horizon's Wood Elves: The Nora are a very isolationist tribe with deep spiritual beliefs and ties to the land. Like Wood Elves they use mostly brown and green in their clothing to blend into the forests of their homeland. Also like wood elves the Nora are very isolationist and typically keep to themselves, they only leave their territory for extreme reasons and are very distrustful of outsiders. They live off the land and try to live alongside nature instead of trying to tame it like other tribes or races. Also, like wood elves the Nora have a bad habit of assuming their superiority of other tribes due to their beliefs and practices. Both are focused, dangerous, and more than willing to protect their home.
Hope that was at least a little interesting, let me know what you all think. This is just something that's been rattling around in my head in increasing complexity for weeks now.
