Saint Bartholomew the Apostle

1st C. Feast Day: August 24 Patronage: against neurological disease, bookbinders, butchers, shoemakers, leather workers and tanners, plasterers, Florentine cheese and salt merchants, Armenia

Saint Bartholomew, one of the twelve Apostles, was introduced by St. Philip to Jesus, who said “Behold, an Israelite in whom there is no guile.” (John1:43-51) His name means “son of Tolomai” and he preached the Gospel in India, Mesopotamia, and Armenia. St. Bartholomew was martyred by being flayed and beheaded. His relics are in Rome, Sicily, and Benevento, Italy, Frankfurt, Germany and Canterbury, England.

In today's homily, the priest was pointing out that when Jesus is risen, and he walks into the room where the disciples were hiding - he opened the closed doors to get in.

"On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, 'Peace be with you.'" (Jn. 20:19)

My priest was using this as an analogy - where in our lives do we have a closed door that we could open up, with the help of Jesus? What is a closed door we are afraid of opening, that could be healed if we just let God in? I'm still meditating on it, I need to spend the week thinking about what my closed door is.

I will be tagging things that don’t relate with this post because I feel this needs to be talked about. If you dont want to read it; you dont like it? Dont read. Don’t complain.

The New Testament may be being banned.

Keep calling us crazy, saying we believe in fairy tales, but most of Jesus’s Prophesies are coming true.

Christians will be mocked, hated, killed, this is the sign of the end times coming. Keep your faith, and if you don’t believe in Jesus, I urge you to turn to him. No matter your race, gender, sexuality, etc, you will always be loved by him. You’re never too bad or too sinful to be a Christian , or to be loved by God.

“If the World hates you, know that it hated me first.”

“Watch out that no one deceives you. 6 Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 8 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains”

“Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. 13 Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

10Then He told them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11There will be great earthquakes, famines, and pestilences in various places, along with fearful sights and great signs from heaven.”

Theres so many things as signs of the end times, i cant put them all.

and finally, one that i feel isnt talked about enough. We talked about this in school, how a few hundred years after this, i think Rome it was invaded Jews and Jerusalem, and they started destroyibg everything but when they got there all the jews were already dead. I don’t quite remember the whole story, so correct me if im wrong.

But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, you will know that her desolation is near. 21Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country stay out of the city. 22For these are the days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written.

23How miserable those days will be for pregnant and nursing mothers! For there will be great distress upon the land and wrath against this people. 24They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive into all the nations. And Jerusalem will be trodden down by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

ach to be fair i may be Judaism Georg here. i tend to wildly overestimate how much the average christian or even secular jew would know because i am a massive fucking nerd about judaism. but still, i thought 'jews do not believe in jesus' was well known, at least. it's literally the only thing you learn about our theology in public education.

#i have been told by many a goy that i should convert because the torah says so. so i do see where this may be stemming from #prefiguration is uniquely Catholic i think but it does seem to show up in other sects #where they sort of assume jews read the torah as a prologue to the new testament #and thus see jewish figures in a wildly different light than we do #moses being the worst probably but all of it is pretty bad. just a very different reading #most of it seems to be predicated on the idea that like. god used to be Really Mean and then jesus made him nice. or something.#most like ahhhh Reformed Christians (?) seem to really emphasize jesus and see him as a sort of counterpoint to the ' abrahamic god '#while in Judaism that's just god. we don't have a second nicer version of god. we grapple with the fact that god does shit we don't like.#and generally seem to see god in a much less uhhh black and white view #so if you see our god as being cruel and don't understand that we Know That i can see why it would be confusing #that we don't have any other figures to worship
