⚣ Idiots In Love 🤦‍♂️

⚣🤦‍♂️ A/N → This is a request that I got from my previous account. It's not a re-post though. This is freshly written and done. Here you are @alexanderstarhero! I hope you like it! Not one of my best, but I did get a similar request to this one, and I wanted to get it out. It was so sweet, yet also so painful to watch. How could you two be that affectionate and cute with each other, and still have no clue of the feelings you both held? It had to be a screw loose in the brain or something because this was just getting ridiculous.

Shortly after Zatara became the new Dr. Fate, Zatanna, his daughter, reached out to his son and her adoptive brother, Y/N Zatara to come join her at Mount Justice and join the Team. He was more than thrilled at the offer and immediately packed up his things from his boarding school and joined his sister in Happy Harbor.

Y/N had always wanted to join the Justice League’s newest stealth and covert team when it was first formed, but Zatara would not allow it. He didn’t want either of his children to join the Team for various reasons. Specifically, he didn’t want to create any chance or risk of losing Zatanna, his only connection to his deceased wife, Sindella.

For Y/N, he knew the life of a superhero and its sometimes cruel and unfair conditions. The magician knew the already hard life the young omega was given early on and didn’t want to add to it.

When Y/N was very young, he’d become an orphan, his parents disappearing under mysterious circumstances. So, he was placed in foster care and moved between many different foster homes. As the story typically goes, he felt out of place and never really accepted in any of the homes his CPS agent would place him in.

Not just for his magical abilities, but sometimes also for his daily obvious submissive nature. Even if he hadn’t presented yet, Y/N always showed early traits of an Omega dynamic. And, just as many places in the world that had yet to move forward in modern times, there was an inherent bias in the foster care system that favored Alpha or Beta children over Omegas.

It wasn’t until his 5th or 6th foster home that he ran away, and happened to come across a battle between Zatara and Wotan. The magician’s curiosity had been piqued when this random child helped him in taking down the sorcerer. After hearing a bit of the young child’s story, he decided to take him under his wing and adopt him as his son.

Many jokes were made by different leaguers about how he needed to be careful or he’d turn into Batman 2.0.

The Dark Knight did not find the joke amusing.

When Zatara had brought Zatanna to the Team’s new base shortly after their creation as a stealth unit for the Justice League, Y/N wanted to join along, but Zatara insisted he stay at his school and focus on his studies. That’s why he was absent for the first adventures his sister got to join in.

Things changed though when Zatanna decided to use the Helmet of Fate in the battle against Klarion after he split the world into two dimensions with one only full of adults and the other only full of children. As fate would have it (pun unintended), Nabu, the spirit possessing the helmet refused to give up her body as he felt it necessary he establish himself permanently on Earth to prevent the world from falling into chaos.

A deal was made between Zatara and Nabu that he would trade places with his daughter, becoming the new Dr. Fate.

After that, Zatanna’s life was moved from New York to Mount Justice where she lived alongside Miss Martian and Superboy. M’Gann did her best to help her new comrade and roommate feel welcomed, excited at having another girl living at Mount Justice and being able to do all sorts of Earth girly stuff as she saw on TV, but it wasn’t enough.

Zatanna craved familiarity. She missed her home and her dad, and though nothing would ever be able to replace those feelings, she figured having her brother around would help her feel less alone after just a few months of living at the Cave

Yes, was it a bit selfish? Kind of, but, in her defense, Y/N had already wanted to join the Team the second he found out about it. It was their dad who wouldn’t let him, so of course, when he got the call from his sister, he wanted to immediately pack up his things and move himself to Happy Harbor.

But, of course, adults had to intervene. Their leaders suggested Y/N wait till he finished the semester at his current school and then transfer over in the new year after winter break was over. Not what they initially wanted, but knowing they would eventually be together in a few months was enough to hold them over.

After the entire mess with Vandal Savage and his scheme of taking the Justice League was over, Batman and Black Canary began the official process of transferring Y/N over to Happy Harbor. They handled all of the paperwork and administrative details on Zatara’s behalf, and soon, both the Zatara siblings became full-time members of the Team.

The day Y/N arrived was one to be remembered. His future teammates couldn’t think of a time they had seen Zatanna so anxious and excited. When the Zeta Tube machines began whirring up and the automated voice announced his arrival, she almost left skid marks on the floor from how fast she sprinted to the opening.

The very first moment Y/N came through, she immediately ran forward and tackled him into a hug with him returning the gesture as well, happy to see his sister. The other team members watched in silent awe, some a bit emotional than others (*cough* Wally *cough*).

After their tearful reunion, Zatanna introduced her brother to the rest of the team. Everything went smoothly until she got to Superboy, who Y/N immediately became nervous and flushed around the second he laid eyes on the Kryptonian.

Zatanna and Y/N always kept in contact through phone calls, emails, and letters while he was away, and that didn’t change when she met the Young Justice team. 

In her messages, she described the Team and its different members, the missions they went on, and all the different stuff about the Cave. She also went into very specific details about one particular member of the group, even going as far as to send pictures sometimes whenever the group took photos together.

Knowing her sweet, Omega brother, and his overly romantic way of thinking, she knew if he and Superboy had ever met, he’d more than likely fall head over heels. Zatanna herself was a Beta, so she wasn’t easily swooned by the sight and smell of Alphas and Omegas like her brother or other certain members of the team (*cough* Wally *cough*).

However, she didn’t expect the surprising (at least to her) relationship between Conner and M’Gann. That truthfully was the plot twist of the season. She was no relationship expert, but if you asked her, those two just didn’t make sense.

There was no chemistry, no connection or spark that even the strongest telescope could see between them. The most you could see was physical attraction if even that. So when it came down to their eventual split a few months later, Zatanta, out of everybody else on the team, was not even the slightest bit surprised.

M’Gann swore they were just on a small break and would be back together in no time, but the sorceress was almost positive it wasn’t happening. Conner showed no interest in wanting to get back with her, which was the entire reason she even started poking at the idea of him and Y/N together in the first place.

They would look so good together, and oh god, could you imagine their children? Cutest kids ever. She wasn’t biased at all, but seriously? Take one look at Y/N, then look at Conner who’s basically the standard of the attractive himbo– ahem, male. 

She could even remember her and her dad doing all the thinking of the world of who Y/N’s parents could be.

You didn’t get looks like those by wishing for it or casting a spell…

Nah.

Yet, the only issue getting in the way was their inability to confess their obvious feelings for each other. It was like that feeling you get when watching a Dora episode and the twitch but replacing it with a b kept asking for something that was literally RIGHT THERE.

Like, girl, ARE YOU BLIND?!

That had to be the case, considering both reactions from Y/N and Conner when they were introduced.

As mentioned before, Y/N became flustered and nervous, almost stuttering over his words when he went to shake hands with Superboy. He’d been smooth and charismatic with everyone else on the team, but, as Zatanna predicted, the Omega immediately grew a crush on the young superhero. And it definitely wasn’t one-sided.

You know in those cheesy romance novels and movies (Disney we’re looking at you), when the two lovebirds or soulmates first make contact, and there’s that ‘spark’ between them. Like long-lost lovers or some shit like that?

Let’s just say, this was a bit more, extra if you will.

Conner had only been out of his pod for a few months, and what he had yet to discover was that the human part of his DNA meant his genes were also subjected to Alpha/Beta/Omega biology, unlike M’Gann and her Uncle or even Clark. Not much study had been done yet on Kryptonian biology and if they were affected by a similar biological dynamic system like most homo-sapiens were. 

Martians were never known to have such a thing in their biology according to Martian Manhunter.

Therefore, it never occurred to anyone the possibility that Conner could very well end up presenting a dynamic at some point if he hadn’t already. When he met Y/N and shook hands with him, you could say his reaction was surprising, bordering on terrifying or hot. Your choice.

The Kryptonian’s nose had flared and he ended up yanking Y/N into his arms, aggressively sniffing at his neck. He also uttered the word ‘Mine’ while glaring and growling at anyone who dared take a step too close.

Hmm, does anyone else have the weirdest sense of Déjà Vu? Weird.

It became clear to everyone right there Conner’s biological dynamic; Alpha. And, considering meeting Y/N was his first time meeting an Omega ever, he reacted quite better than many before they’d seen, which was a bit shocking when you think about it.

The man literally came out of his pod swinging and punching, not to mention his less-than-tactical way of dealing with confrontational situations. Everyone chalked it up to his Kryptonian DNA and his isolation from society for his aggressive ways.

Nope, it was just regular Alpha-like temper tantrums. Typical.

Plus, most of the guys were either Alphas, except for Dick who had yet to present. Artemis and Zatanna were both betas, making Y/N the first and only Omega on the team.

The others managed to separate the two, and when Conner got himself back under control, he apologized embarrassingly before excusing himself. Everyone had brushed it off and wouldn’t hang it over his head, knowing from experience how bad those situations can get when you experience your first ‘hormonal instinct takeover’, or H.I.T. as most would call it.

Whoever thought of that must have considered themselves quite clever. Getting hit with H.I.T.? So corny.

That interaction all but confirmed Zatanna’s predictions that Conner and Y/N would end up together. Though, he didn’t score high in M’Gann’s favor at all.

She wasn’t pleased with that interaction at all and wanted to avoid the possibility of having any repeat mistakes in the future. Things would not go her way. In truth, they would go the opposite.

After they showed him the Cave, they let him get set up in his room which was conveniently right next to Conner’s room. Something else the Martian girl was 100% not happy about.

She tried to point out the fact that maybe if Conner was getting used to his new Alpha dynamic, having an Omega room right next to him wouldn’t be the best idea since it could be a trigger for the Kryptonian. It almost worked too, but once again, things did not go her way.

Surprisingly (not for Zatanna), it was Conner who shot down the idea, saying that he could control himself and didn’t think it necessary for Y/N to move rooms. Besides, the Omega had already started unpacking and getting comfortable, and he didn’t want to inconvenience him.

Which was half the truth…

Little did he or anyone else realize, Conner was already falling in sync with his natural Alpha instincts. And the most urgent of those at the moment was keeping the Omega he desired in a close enough place where he could protect and watch over him.

The thought of having Y/N in a room farther away where he couldn’t immediately get to him if something were to happen left a very sour feeling in the Alpha’s stomach. Thankfully, Batman and Black Canary agreed to let him keep the room. But, Conner would be working with the Dark Knight on controlling and understanding his new biological nature since that was something the G-Gnomes couldn’t telepathically teach him.

M’Gann was not happy.

Zatanna was ecstatic.

Y/N was nervous but also giddy. The Kryptonian was not alone in his feelings or instincts taking over as the second anyone suggested a room change, the Omega was prepared to fight (metaphorically speaking) to stay exactly where he was.

He wasn’t blind at all. Y/N caught on to M’Gann’s motives the second she opened her mouth, and he wasn’t going to let her win if he had anything to say about it. The more time Conner and Y/N spent around each other, the more protective and jealous each other became when it came to anyone else coming around them. Specifically, anyone they saw as a threat.

For Y/N, that was obviously M’Gann.

As time passed by and he got more acclimated into the team, he was not oblivious to the many attempts M’Gann would make to flirt and get back with Conner, even going as far as one day just blatantly asking him if he ever thought about her.

The Kryptonian was kind enough not to embarrass her in front of everyone and pulled her out of the room to explain his platonic feelings for her. Y/N heard everything though, thanks to a spying spell he secretly cast.

And Y/N is not shy about staking his claim on the Alpha, even though they’re only friends. He finds subtle ways to leave his scent on Conner, whether that’s giving him subtle touches where he knows his scent glands are, asking to wear his jacket when he pretends to get cold, or finding an excuse to hug or touch the boy.

Also, if the Alpha ever needs anything, Y/N is the first to grab and provide what it may be. Not only did it please his nature to know he was taking care of an Alpha, but it also satisfied his territorial side whenever M’Gann saw or heard Conner praising him for his assistance.

His biggest success though may have been after an incident where M’Gann tried to read his mind only to have her thoughts scattered by his defensive spell. Y/N was never a big fan of the telepathic link of communication they used on missions, giving M’Gann unlimited access to all of their thoughts.

He placed a protective spell over his and Zatanna’s minds with her permission that would only allow M’Gann access to communicating thoughts and nothing else. If she went searching for more, the spell would activate and deflect her signal right back to her mind, scrambling her head. Imagine a brain freeze or your worst headache, and then put it on steroids. Served her well.

He discreetly put one on Conner as well, but knew he would take it off eventually as he didn’t want to overstep boundaries.

Of course, this caught the attention of others when the Martian girl was more or less screaming in pain for a solid minute. The effect didn’t last long, so she wasn’t being tortured for an extended period, only long enough to teach her a lesson. 

When Aqualad asked what happened, Y/N simply explained his discomfort with having an open link into each of their minds and his protective measures in case someone decided to get a little nosy. M’Gann’s little reaction proved his concerns were justified.

The mage suggested that he could use the same spell which would allow them to communicate telepathically still, but just that. No reading one’s thoughts and mind.

Everyone readily agreed to this, of course, the only one protesting it was M’Gann, but considering she was outnumbered, she had no choice but to go along. Aqualad also requested he place that defensive spell on each one of their minds, just in case any of them were to have run-ins with a mind-reading villain like that time in Bialya.

When it came time for him to put the spell on Conner, Y/N decided to come clean and admitted he already placed a spell on him. He claimed it was because he heard how the G-Gnomes used to control him telepathically and figured he wanted to erase any chance of that, which was true, but not the only reason. 

Thankfully, the Kryptonian didn’t question him, finding comfort and admiration in the fact that he would go out of his way for him like that. His Alpha side was very happy.

Zatanna, of course, knew better and was very happy watching this entire thing unfold.

Now, on Superboy’s end, his threat was basically anyone who was not either a female, another Omega, or himself. Meaning he sees not just his enemies as a threat to claim over Y/N, but even some of his allies as well.

If he and Y/N were in the same room together and Kal, Wally, or Dick entered, Conner immediately would be on edge. He’d watch their every move like a hawk, especially if they came too close toward the mage for his liking. 

If any of them were to be talking to the Omega, they’d turn to find a very aggravated and tense Kryptonian glaring at them with a very clear message. One wrong move and their mentors would be looking for new mentees.

It was something he had to work hard on in his training with Batman and now Superman as well, taming his jealous and possessive instincts. He learned that while Kryptonians don’t share the same biological dynamics as humans do, they do still have stronger instincts and urges, which can amplify his already strong Alpha nature.

It proved easier said than done.

It was so easy for him to let his protective nature take over, even when Y/N was perfectly safe or in total control of a situation.

Many times on missions, Conner would all but demand that Y/N be paired with him if they were to split up. Even if it sometimes made sense for the mage to be paired off with a different person, he’d barely budge. With Artemis or Zatanna, he was lenient. M’Gann was just an automatic no. And any of the other guys, it’d be easier to ask Batman to not brood for one day.

That wasn’t even the worst part, though. Many times on missions or in battles, the Kryptonian would demand Y/N stay back and let him handle the fight, even if the mage was winning.

At one point, Wotan sought revenge against Zatara, Dr. Fate, and the Omega who defeated him so many years ago and had once again combined forces with Klarion to put many heroes in the Justice League under a spell. Similar to when that mind control thing happened with Vandal Savage, but this time, they were instructed to just destroy those three.

Of course, as Fate would have it (no pun intended), Superboy and Y/N ended up facing off against Superman. Now, given the last time the two Kryptonians faced off, you’d think Conner would have taken the back-pedal, considering they both shared a similar weakness to magic.

Nope.

Conner insisted that Y/N stay behind him and that he would take care of Superman himself. He held out for as long as he could, but, at some point, the mage just couldn’t continue to sit by and watch.

They won the battle, and Zatanna and Y/N were able to break the spell over the heroes, but Conner was not happy with the Omega at all. However, he couldn’t figure out if he was more upset about the fact he disobeyed him or that he put his life in danger for him. 

And, truthfully, he had to wonder if he was only upset and not also appreciative and grateful for the knowledge of knowing that if he truly was ever in trouble, he could count on Y/N to be there to help him when he couldn’t help himself.

Again, Zatanna was fully enjoying herself watching this play out.

Yet, the longer it went on, the more she and the others got tired of waiting. Even M’Gann was getting restless wondering when those two were going to man up and admit their feelings.

In the beginning, Y/N and Conner were both very awkward around each other, considering how they first met. The Kryptonian felt as if he didn’t know how to approach the Omega without humiliating himself again. And, the mage felt like he didn’t know how to talk to the Alpha without getting flustered and nervous and saying something embarrassing.

Truly, two peas in a pod.

But, their mutual affection and painfully obvious feelings for each other would bring them closer over time, and they soon became almost virtually inseparable. There weren’t many instances where anyone could say they saw one without the other. Especially Conner who always made it a point to be in the same vicinity as Y/N.

Zatanna and the others eventually got tired of waiting and cooked up a plan to get the two together so they could finally end this drawn-out torture. Since they were both so oblivious, they decided the best way to get them to admit their feelings was for lack of a better phrase, ‘forcing them in a corner.’

Some legitimate concerns did come up considering their plan consisted of Wally flirting with Y/N to irritate and make Conner jealous. The main one came from the speedster himself in how they would keep the Kryptonian from trying to essentially murder him.

Don’t get him wrong; Wally was no coward. But, he knew when he was outmatched in a fight, and considering how territorial and aggressive Alphas could get when they felt challenged since he was one himself, the possibilities were all too real in his mind.

Zatanna, Dick, and the others promised they wouldn’t let that happen, but it didn’t do much to alleviate the concerns in his mind. But, in a surprising twist of events, it turned out Conner wasn’t the one they had to worry about.

They put their plan into action early in the mornings, with Wally giving subtle one-liners and suggestive looks in Y/N’s direction. As predicted, Conner immediately became disgruntled, growing irritated and frustrated with every flirty line and look out of the speedster’s mouth toward his Omega (at least in his mind).

Y/N was surprised by this as well and did his best to ignore Wally’s advances, but not good enough in a certain Martain’s eye. 

M’Gann was not in on Zatanna’s plans for obvious reasons, and when she saw Wally’s attempts at flirting with the Omega took that as her golden opportunity to win Conner back. She found the Alpha in the training room by himself, a rare occurrence where Y/N was nowhere in sight.

He was busy sparring with the reinforced punching bag Batman created for him, doing his best to control and tame his anger like Superman and Batman taught him. But, his super hearing wouldn’t allow much of that since he could still hear every flirty line out of Wally’s mouth which just increased the intensity of his punches.

M’Gann took advantage of his angry state, trying to paint a false, negative image of Y/N that if he really cared about the Kryptonian, he wouldn’t entertain any of Wally’s behavior at all. She was laying hands on his hard, shirtless body doing her best to give her most alluring eyes while looking at his sweaty and angered face.

Conner was so in his head with his anger and frustration that he barely reacted or moved when M’Gann pushed herself closer, looking as if she was going in for a kiss. Of course, as fate would have it, that was the moment Y/N chose to walk in on them with Wally and the others in tow.

It was almost as if time had paused and then skipped a few seconds because before anyone could react, Y/N had cast a spell that blasted M’Gann to the other side of the room. No one had seen the Omega that angry before (besides Zatanna) didn’t know how to react when he stomped toward the Martian who was just getting herself off the floor.

When it looked like no one was going to do anything, Zatanna was about to step in until Conner intervened, grabbing Y/N, and holding him against his body while instructing the others to check on the Martian to make sure she was okay. He dragged the furious Omega out of the room, Zatanna subtly smirking as she watched before going to help M’Gann.

Conner marched them both toward his bedroom, shutting the door forcibly behind him before pushing Y/N against the surface, smashing his lips against him to silence the Omega’s angry shouts. Shocked, surprised, bewildered, all words you could use to describe Y/N's reaction to the sudden kiss, but resistant? Not in this universe or the next however many.

He immediately gave in to the Kryptonian’s demanding and rough lips, thoroughly enjoying the feeling of his hands squeezing and pulling his waist against his. They became a tangled mess of limbs as Conner moved them from the door over to his bed, carefully laying the Omega’s body onto the mattress while positioning himself on top.

Eventually, they broke their lips apart, but the Alpha wasn’t done yet. He greedily ran his lips up and down the Omega’s jaw and neck, giving into his possessive nature and leaving as many bites and hickeys as the eye could see. 

At that point, Y/N was begging for the Kryptonian to knot and mark him, seeing as how Conner wasn’t shy this time about letting the smaller male know who’s Omega he was. His Alpha nature and instincts were very satisfied seeing the mage so desperate and needy for him, wishing suddenly he could take a picture to capture this moment.

And while tempted to give in to the Omega’s cries and pleas, he opted to resist, wanting to save that moment for a more special occasion.

“Boo, you’re no fun,” Y/N pouted.

Conner grew a smug look at the bratty Omega before running his nose down his neck toward his scent gland. “That’s fine. Besides, why should I reward you after letting another Alpha flirt with you all day?” Conner asked, a crossed expression passing over his face.

“I wasn’t letting him flirt with me. I was trying to get him to stop and avoid him all day since I knew it would make you upset.” Y/N said in reply.

“How did you know I would be upset?”

“Dude, anytime one of the guys even breathed at me, you got angry. You were ready to break Dick’s arm that time he caught me falling from that stairway.” Y/N laughed.

“He shouldn’t have his hands that low on your waist. You can easily catch someone using their armpits.” Conner said, a childish ‘hmph’ leaving his lips.

“Yeah, okay Mr. I can lift a car with my pinky.”

Conner rolled his eyes, before using his hands to tickle the Omega’s sides, “You think you’re so funny.”

Y/N tried to fight against the laughs coming up his chest and push Conner away, but the Alpha was obviously stronger than him and easily held him down while continuing to tickle him mercilessly. Eventually, he released him and they both calmed down.

The Alpha continued to lay gently on top of the Omega, burying his face in the smaller male’s neck to breathe in his scent while Y/N rubbed his hands up and down the larger male’s back and through his dark hair. It was intimate and peaceful, the two lovebirds finally enjoying what they both had secretly been craving for so long.

Eventually, their friends came to check on them, interrupting the special moment. Wally apologized to Conner after he and Zatanna explained their plan, to which the Alpha and Omega gave unamused looks to their friends, though they both appreciated the gesture since it did help them finally get together.

Y/N also apologized to M’Gann for his behavior but did warn her that if ever tried something like that with his Alpha again, she’d realize just how creatively violent he could get with his magic. Surprisingly, she also apologized, but the Omega could tell that his friends probably forced her to do so.

Either way, he was happy.

He and his idiot Alpha were finally together.

Not like me at all to finish up my studying while eating lunch and in the car to and from ballet, right? Ha. That sounds exactly like me as of late. No wonder I've felt tired. I am not giving myself much of a break. But I tell myself that I only have a week left and Julien is going to be home soon, and it will be better to study extra now so I can spend more time with my brother when he gets back for the summer. It's only a few more days, and I'll get to see him again. I know I saw him over the winter holidays, but it was not long enough! Yet, I'm going to be gone for a lot of the summer too. It will be okay.

Mom is coming with us on one summer trip as a chaperone, partially because they needed more volunteers and we can afford to pay for a second trip (the cost for one person is pretty high). She wasn't going to at first, but I said it was okay and that it would give Dad and Julien time to be together and us time to be together, as long as she didn't umbrella (hover over) me during the trip, which she promised she wouldn't.

Tomorrow is my harmony exam! I can't believe it is here already! I've been studying during my piano practice times, but this exam is so difficult! Then again I didn't think I would score a distinction in my Advanced Foundation exam so maybe I'll get a higher mark on this than I'm expecting. Then again, I am more serious about ballet than I am piano, though I am still fairly serious about piano too. As long as I pass, that is all that matters. All I need is a 60, and I am good. Albeit, that is only a pass with no honors, but I am praying for a 60 minimum. Although, if I don't overthink like I sometimes do, I could manage at least a 70 I think.

All that being said, I may not get the chance to post tomorrow since my exam is at 9:30 and will take about 3 hours. I will be doing all of my school work of the afternoon before ballet and anything I don't finish on Saturday morning after breakfast if I need to.

I can do this! I am an amazing and awesome human being! I will not doubt myself. I will trust in my abilities because I have worked hard this entire year and I am as ready as I can be. I've got this!

I originally read A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows back in August of 2022 and have just finished rereading it two years later because I realized the sequel is out and I'm absolutely delighted that AS&SE is just as good as I remember it but I'm starting the second book (All The Hidden Paths) and from the prologue and book blurb alone it seems like it's a sequel that's romance plot is purely about the newly married couple not getting along/trying to be driven apart

And while I'm really really hoping I'm wrong, I'm TERRIFIED that this book is going to have one of the miscommunication tropes I absolutely cannot get over because miscommunication is only worth reading when it's done right, which is very hard to pull off

Like in Winter's Orbit, Everina Maxwell does a very good job of explaining why Kiem and Jainan don't talk about their feelings to one another, it's very in character for them to not explain their attraction to one another and it makes sense from a character perspective

Scum Villain does a very good job of explaining this miscommunication as well, Shen Qingqiu is absolutely horrible at talking about his feelings and Luo Binghe's words and actions are being interpreted with a clear bias and it does not help he's being mentally influenced by an evil sword

Hell, even in A Strange and Stubborn Endurance, it's easy to tell why Cae and Vel aren't talking to each other about their feelings (Cae because he doesn't want to overwhelm Vel, and Vel because he's recovering from the trauma that Kellic has inflicted upon him)

There are other books that I know I've read that I can't think of off the top of my head that handle miscommunication beautifully, because it's so very in character that if you do find yourself screaming at the characters to just talk to each other, it's quickly followed by a rational voice explaining why it's highly unlikely that these two characters actually will

The start of All The Hidden Paths however (and mind you, I'm only 26 pages in, just barely having started the second chapter) reads very much as conflict for the sake of conflict within the relationship and it's grating at my skin

Immediately from the prologue, we're introduced to this new guy, Asrien, who's whole purpose thusfar is to break up Cae and Vel, which... Leaves a sour taste in my mouth? Vel in the first book is EXTREMELY observant, he's very good at reading people, he's very intelligent and very good at overcoming his initial conclusions if he's quick to jump to them

Cae is much more focused on battle strategies and fighting, but he's also not stupid, and throughout the entire first book they've built up a huge amount of trust after everything they've been through together, and I really, seriously feel that if this Asrien guy at all succeeds in driving a wedge between them, it would be undoing an entire book's worth of building a relationship, because I don't see a way it can be done in a way that makes sense with the previous characterizations of the two

I really sincerely hope I'm wrong, and that this is just the set up, and I will be pleasantly surprised when Cae and Vel see through all the attempts to break them apart and become all the more united for it, and I understand that oftentimes in new relationships once you've gotten past the honeymoon phase things start to get more difficult, but I feel as though it's going to end up with me not liking how this goes in terms of miscommunication and I'm just aksofkdkdksk needed to vent about it

Seventeen: the more I have learned about him the more his personality just makes me love him; sweet, kind, gentle, and also the world's biggest heathen - what more could I want? Monsta X: very similar to the above; he had so much talent and charisma, but I saw that he was appreciated so little for it, so I took it upon myself to show him the love he deserves! Another cute, sweet, heathen (who makes d*ck jokes on national television) Ateez: he and I are very similar in a lot of ways, like with our nerdy interests and clean-freak tendencies, and that really endeared me to him a lot; he's also a sweetheart who will also find a way to create chaos when space permits (he's also super fucking hot have you seen him???) Stray Kids: I saw just how much he cared for the rest of the members so early on through the Stray Kids survival show; seeing how much time, effort, dedication, and passion he had for them and for music really made me fall for him (and, he is also a sweet cute heathen) NCT 127: Another case of a member going so deeply underappreciated that I decided that I will be their biggest cheerleader, and the more I learn about him and his devilishly charming personality the more I love him (and another cute, super hot heathen) KARD: literally just bisexual panic. that's the only explanation I have. Some of the stuff that FEH has put out makes me wish Trial Maps were a thing again. It'd let fans use enemy characters without breaking the story.

Eh,

As a concept, I loved the Larva (Epi?) paralogue in Nopes - you are basically playing as Larva, going to help his genocidal "allies" to run away from the Empire and the CoS, to the point where you fight against Cethleann, Cichol and Seiros.

And Larva in this map, is nothing but obnoxious, calling everyone beasts, mocking the Empire for not knowing why they fight, sprouting platitude about "fighting for his fwends" (the same ones he just dissed seconds ago) while deshumanising the Nabateans all along, calling them beasts and such -

Given the backstory between Agarthans and those specific Nabateans - the survivors of a massacre he knows of, hell he calls the main perpetrator an "ally" - there's little to no doubts that Larva here is being a big ball of, uh, prejudice and bias - ergo we're playing as the enemy!

However, because the Fodlan games are, the Fodlan games where only people belonging to factions from the latest feh banner are challenged and contested, there is no payback, no result from this paralogue. No Barney wondering why the eff was a Larva like fighting against Saint Seiros and people familiar but with a different hair color, no reason/justification behind this random battle, where lo, Larva fights/defeats survivors of a massacre he, uh, "didn't agree with" but totes supports given his views, mocks people for not knowing why they fight for but never reveals the audience or even Barney what this dream was about (I was helping Goneril run away from Cichol with Cichol's sister's knee plate, the one he obtained after vivisecting her and eating her liver!).

So, in a nutshell, I think you can make a game where you play as "the enemy" and call it a vilain route or a "bad ending" route and remembers Fates?

Everyone can be a hero in their own eyes, sure!

But with the Fodlan games, especially Nopes, given how hard the AG gang beats themselves for "maybe we're bad for invading the Empire to stop the war after it starts to hunt its randoms for funsies but trufax Randy is very nice and kind he let a random soldier escape while he was busying destroying a village" - you have the feeling that the "everyone" from the earlier maxim is just, the SB and GW and with that paralogue, the Slither gangs.

FE16 gave more "heroic tunnel vision" to each of its factions through each route, even if SS was a bit more nuanced - but you know who doesn't get any "heroic tunnel vision" or pov in those games?

And only gets an infodump at the end of the most superfluous route ?

Ultimately I'm not too keen on the Trial Maps designs (you're talking about the maps where if you finish the game 5 times you get a free unit right?) because I think that if you have a character you should write a plot that can accomodate for that character's presence without breaking it - but again, Trial Maps were the only ways KT found to give us playable Nabateans (Rhea'n'Sothis) and lines, since the main game refuses to do anything with them, like letting them talk in the microphone.

Short story, long story : a good story can fit "enemy characters" and have them follow their own plans (maybe in a gaiden) to give more insight on them, what they think and/or why they are thinking this, but it should be integrated in the game and shouldn't demolish it because "everyone's story is equally valid", or, and worse, shouldn't bank on the game not giving a voice to the last faction that is piled on by every other without even being able to reply.

But I’ve actually been wanting to talk about this for a couple of days. I recently saw a YouTube Short that listed the most hated trainees in survival shows. Seon represented for I-Land, but K and Ni-ki were mentioned in the comments. A LOT. And I saw one comment that didn’t have any replies, so I couldn’t fact check it quite well (it’s been so long since I watched I-Land and I didn’t know if what EJ said has been outside of I-Land so—), but it made the comparison of Ni-ki being the most hated because of what he did to Taki and EJ because of what he did to Daniel. I was very scared that this is going to be true but like I said, I could not fact check it exactly. But now that I know that it’s true, I have very complicated feelings.

I started to watch I-Land a long time ago, after I became a fan of ENHYPEN, and I’m honestly so fucking glad I did. I don’t know if I would be as big of an ENGENE if I watched the show first. Ik that a big contributor of that would’ve been M Snake’s evil editing and that they were just desperate kids fighting a life or death situation, but I still have so much trouble separating the two.

I didn’t even finish the show. I can’t remember exactly to what point I stopped watching. An episode or two after the second part started?

This is why I… strongly disliked (?) K for a very long time. I could not, for the life of me, get over the DNA unit and how he treated Ni-ki (it was especially bad since Ni-ki was pretty much my bias and I had grown to really love him). So even when &TEAM debuted, I could not look at him the same way (mind you, I didn’t watch &AUDITION at the time either. But I did start to watch it maybe a couple of months ago but then I stopped watching it🙃). But then I did end up giving him a second chance (and it was really strange).

But now finding out what Euijoo did is really messing with me and now I can’t look at HIM the same way😩 And it sucks because I loved him a lot— I LOVE him a lot… idk.

omg yeah :(( tbh riki had much different intentions and voted taki out because he felt like taki could improve first and then come back to iland, and he communicated that perfectly to taki too. so i don't get the riki hate for that reason because everyone had to vote four people out anyways and it's hard to gauge to be faced with something like that right off the bat 🥲 ej's intentions with voting daniel out were .. interesting LMFAOO but it was also a decision they were making as children who just were competing to debut so i guess he was looking out for himself :') sometimes u gotta put yourself first !! tbh the final 12 were all people who were very proactive about putting themselves out there and had the survival show mentality while still being able to bond and not see each other as threats, which is why i do think more trainees needed to be a lot more forward 😔

yeah im glad i watched the show after they debuted too !! mostly because of the voting stuff bc honestly i didn't know the members too well before i watched the show LOL so i was genuinely surprised when k didn't make it since he seemed to be a producer favorite for a while 😵‍💫 but yeah that whole thing between him and riki reeeeally put me off for dna and i think he got even worse for flicker unit :/ he redeemed himself a little later in that episode and from then on but im glad you like k now ! yeah it's probably way different seeing him in a fixed group where he's secure instead of on a survival show where he's fighting to debut 🥲 i think since he was oldest out of the final 12 it felt more bittersweet when he was eliminated 🚶‍♂️

i get why it bothers you !! but im sure for ej's case i don't think any of them took the voting to heart or anything :') daniel was still suuuper happy for ej once he got to go back to iland even though he was sent to ground !! and ej was hugging daniel when he made it into the final 12 so the voting is definitely dramatized to feel worse than it is

To add to the discussion on Johndo vs Taedo:

Anon, Do chose to watch SWF (with Tae as the judge) over his own brother’s drama, when both the timings clashed. I’m not saying he loves Tae more than Gongmyung, no. But I think it has to do more with how Tae is in such an environment, keeping up with people’s perception of Tae (considering the hate he received etc..). Do cares about such things when it comes to Tae, Jae and Hyuck ( Do hovering around Hyuck when he was feeling ill).

Tbh, about TY’s YouTube, I have a feeling Do would have watched the initial ones to see how Tae settled in. Do wants to be Tae’s support. And he takes things that Tae’s emotionally invested in seriously.

But it’s not the same with Johnny and JCC. Do gives Johnny company, but his emotinal investment is not as heightened as with Tae. Like I don’t think he will choose to come back early from a vacation at home, because Johnny feels lonely/scared. We know he did it for Tae…

Taejaehyuck as Do’s closest circle is something I have observed too, now even more crystal thanks to some pointers from the author. But I find it pretty adorable that Do formed this bond with Tae. Both Jae and Hyuck are pretty independent, Jae more than Hyuck. But Tae seems like someone for whom Do would need to work more than what he does for Jaehyuck (this is keeping Jaedo ’s relationship constant, I’m talking about each pair as friends). So him being bffs with Tae despite his neediness has always interested me? Like why Tae? Or was it more circumstantial? 

Also, how needy do you think Hyuck is? Generally and wrt Do? 

I would like to know the author’s pov regarding these Thank you!

The difference in emotional investment is apparent. 

It is difficult to discuss relationships and friendships in the unit. On one hand, it is interesting in regard to human nature and social dynamics, examples of help or achieving a working rapport despite differences in personalities, how different temperaments deal with similar hardships of the idol life, etc. Observing 127 is like watching a crew of a spaceship. A group of randomly unrelated by blood or other connections people who can’t escape each other and have to work together, whose survival depends on each other. 

On the other hand, everyone biases someone (and thus are biased and emotional on bias’ behalf), and everyone understands friendship differently. People project what they know and what they want to see.

TaeDo. Doyoung has an urge to take people under his wing and he likes when people listen to him. He said that about Jeno, Jeno became his favourite because he behaved as a kid. Doyoung likes to take care of others (he says he prefers to give love than to receive it). Taeyong was accused of bullying around his debut, he had the leader responsibilities, he openly asked for Do’s attention and help. I think the hard times when they both opened to each other (like the time Tae started to cry writing lyrics and Do came into the room and started crying with him) made them this close. 

Eventhough Johnny talked about JohnDo having talks in a closet and overcomeing difficult times together, it evidently wasn’t on the same emotional scale for Doyoung. Doyoung helped Johnny (and thus became so important), but not vise versa. Do always says that Johnny makes him laugh, that’s it. It always sounded to me as Do accepting Johnny’s character but not celebrating him. Johnny’s humour and teasing of Do is something Doyoung tolerates. Johnny often says he teases Do the most out of love. And why would he if it didn’t bother Do. 

Meanwhile, Tae is needy, but he yields not antagonises. In this way he is more comfortable and suitable for Doyoung. I remember Johnny tried to explain to Do that him being spontaneous and not planning a trip can match well with Do’s planning nature (while it should drive people like Do mad, actually). 

Both Taeyong and Johnny demand attention and investment in themselves. However, Taeyong does it with boba eyes and obedience, while Johnny pushes and presses. And he tries sometimes to not do it, but his nature wins out in the end. When Tae teases Do “beats” him, when Johnny teases Do bears through it. 

It’s not like Doyoung doesn’t like Johnny, Johnny’s character is just too much for him to be comfortable and relax. We see them when they are both in a mood to spend time together. And don’t see them when Doyoung doesn’t let Johnny into his room because he is tired of everyone and needs a break (but JN complains to us, fans, about it later) or don’t care to check on Johnny and tell him his ideas and future plans (again, Johnny complains about it later). 

And lastly. I told once that I think righteous Doyoung evaluates people. He keeps hardworkers in a higher regard. Taeyong in worth the effort because Taeyong gives everything to the group, to other people, he creates music. He is Do’s worthy champion. 

TaeDo manage to fall into the same wavelength, same pace well as evident from their trip vlogs. Johnny runs away from Doyoung to climb the stairs, hides from him in a store in a foreign country with Mark, drives away and leaves him on the streets in a foreign country... Taeyong goes where Doyoung goes.   

Haechan evidently needs both Doyoung and Taeyong looking at how often he thanks both and how he looks for Do’s approbation in small details (like the taste of soup) and small favours (make me fried rice). Hyuk always makes sure to let others know when Doyoung buys smth for Dreamies or does smth for 127 neos. 

Haechan needs company. He goes to eat with Taeil when Doyoung isn’t available. And he likes Taeil for being accepting with him. So I’d say he is needy. He is independant about his career, knowing what he wants, he doesn’t need to be mentored on things or encouraged much (in comparison to Woo). He is a smart, wise and ambitious man himself. However, Hyuk needs a family, the love, the gifts, the meals, the protection from antis. Doyoung gives him safety to crush. When Hyuk is tired he goes to sit near Doyoung or get a pat on the head from him.  

Jaehyun is a needy one as well. Half a day without Doyoung’s attention and he starts to pout and sulk. The difference is that he is OK to feel the bond, to know he is loved (knowing Doyoung, Jae is bombarded with text messages anyway). He is a working dog that can work in the field alone, but once he comes back he needs a treat and the rubs.

Random talks about the Arg NT 🇦🇷 : part 2 - Football & KPop, when my 2 fandoms collide

This is another random Argie talk, but before I get to write about them, first I want to mention my other fandom (outside football), which is KPop, as a prologue.

Yesung from the KPop group Super Junior is my first KPop bias, when I first fell into KPop hole circa 2013 (though I never call myself ‘ELF’, am just a ‘Cloud’, a Yesung-fan). It’s only after I became Shinhwa fan (4 years later, back in 2017) that I ended up 'left' football fandom.

Quick introduction about Shinhwa, they are the longest KPop group that ever exists, the one with no members changing, and never disbanding either. One of the reasons I love them badly is because the bond between members. The way they get closer with each fight (the members fought a lot, and I talk about real fistfight), at the same time use excessive skinship method (kissing, hugging, cuddling, getting naked together, having a bath/poop/pee together) to strengthen the chemistry, and it's been like that since their debut, back in 1997-98. The chemistry which makes the 6 of them a really good pairing, either in a form of a duo (15 OTPs) or a trio (10 pairings consisting of 3 members).

In 2018 this group celebrated their 20th anniversary with packed schedules, that's the major reason I skipped World Cup (other than all my faves played badly; The Dutch didn't even qualify, Germany's early exit and Argentina made you question the coach 'Why???').

After World Cup ended, obviously I still didn't bother to watch football (club-wise, I'm a fan of United and Juve since 2003/2004) because Shinhwa took away all my free time, considering so many stories they've had within that 20++ years and I was obsessed to learn everything about them.

But in the midst of busy fangirling over Shinhwa, somehow, I managed to watch Copa America 2021 semifinal, although I couldn't recall anything about the match, or the players, but my old tweet reminded me that I did watch La Scaloneta unconsciously.

Fast forward to this Qatar World Cup, tbh I only started to watch La Albiceleste until they played against the Netherlands (I need a good night's sleep more than football, so mostly just watched the highlights), and when they advanced to semis I watched their Prime “Camina a Qatar” docu-series, and just like that I am trapped.

It's like, initially I came to see Di Maria (my love since 2008) but ended up stuck with the rest of them. And just like years ago when I ditched football for KPop, now it's the other way around.

Call me crazy but I can't help to feel/think La Scaloneta bears several similarities with Shinhwa.

The way the Scalo boys bonded thru truco games ((jackstones, in Shinhwa's case)), barbecues, drinking mate ((for Shinhwa it's soju or beer)), and using profanities as a way to show affection, not to forget Scalo boys also give kisses and hugs, being playful/cheesy to one another (both IRL and on their SNS), every players is shippable (OTP material, I say), their brutal honesty and willingness to protect and defend the team, Scalo boys just remind me of all the things I love from Shinhwa.

And tbh I don't think I've seen a football team/group like this before ((maybe in the good ol' days of Barcelona. I read my old diary, and there I wrote 'this team is like family, no selfish/individualistic players at all)). But a good thing like this sometimes, unfortunately, doesn't last long, no matter how sure we are that these boys will stay solid like this forever.

This, I learned the hard way from Shinhwa. Even with the 6 of them spending 20++ years together, I used to be so confident their friendship will be eternal, that nothing can break the members' bond, turns out I was wrong cuz time and situation changed it little by little.

(Until today the group Shinhwa is still not disbanded yet, but they've been on hiatus since the pandemic, and only came together twice during the event of their members' weddings.)

Now let's go back with La Scaloneta. The way I see it, it all started with a good internal relationship between players, coaches, and AFA's long-time staff. That positivity, combined with Scalo's ability as their coach, helped them to play well on the field and won some games. The victories then generated public support in which boosted players' morale, till they had 36 unbeaten games, and earned 3 major trophies in just 17 months.

Post World Cup, now they are superstars. All eyes are on them. Enzo already stirred something between him, Benfica fans, and Chelsea fans with his transfer rumor. Lautaro scores a goal for Inter and toxic people won't stop talking shit about him because of his performance in WC, all the while praising La Arana Alvarez. Then there's this growing public opinion about Macca being too good to play for 'small team' Brighton, Dibu too good for Villa, Moli Rodri should leave Atletico, etc.

My question, when there’s a thin line between ‘supporters’ and ‘haters’ since people are so easy to judge, and so quick to switch sides, will that stuff affect them?

Today they all can say it's a healthy competition among players about who gets to play and who stays on the bench. But will tomorrow they say the same too? Especially now they are separated for a while, focusing on their club with each of them pursuing different goals, will they keep the chemistry intact once they back to Ezeiza, or will they start to act more individually as time go by?

That's why the more I fangirl over them, the more I actually feel anxious about the future of Scalo boys (especially if/once Leo no longer there), simply because I want to enjoy this happiness for a bit longer since it's only fair cuz we’ve suffered for a long long time.

Unconventional Game Design

Conventions are neither good nor bad. But when we bring conventions into the games we’re building without fully understanding the innerworkings of these clusters of ideas, we are effectively giving up on that whole portion of our own creation. We’re implicitly deciding, often without even realizing it, that there is nothing worth questioning inside this whole space within our game which the convention takes up.

To give an example of what I mean by “convention”, let’s look at a standard first person character controller. The conventional way of allowing the player to move around from a first person perspective is to have 2 axes of movement input — forward/back & left/right — and 2 axes of camera input - pitch & yaw. When a movement input is given, the player character will accelerate at some rate towards a maximum speed. This acceleration can be fast — reaching top speed quickly, which gives the player movement a snappy feel — or slow — giving the player a more floaty feeling as changing your movement vector is sluggish. Then we have the 2 axes of camera rotation. The camera is locked to the player character and rotates around this point, usually being able to rotate infinitely in yaw, but being locked to only 180° in pitch, so you cannot look beyond straight up or straight down. There are many ways to adjust these properties to give your game various different feelings in combination, but all the same, these are mere turns of the dials and ultimately all come from the same base system.

Some other properties of this convention are:

Step-up — which causes the player to automatically step up onto a bump in the level as long as the bump is shorter than some threshold.

Slope-bias — which is a maximum slope angle which the player is able to walk up. No matter what, any surface steeper than this value is not traversable, and the switch between these states is binary.

Jumping — which shoots the player upwards at some velocity.

Crouching — which decreases the players height and walk speed.

A high percentage of all first person games ever released follow this convention closely, and if they depart from it at any point it is usually in minor ways. Again, this is not necessarily bad. But when designing our own games, questioning convention is vital to exploring the system we’re building.

In an ideal world, with infinite time to design and perfect our game, we would use no conventions at all. We would meticulously decide every single piece which does or doesn’t belong in our game, considering all possibilities and weighing the tradeoffs of each. But we don’t have so much time, and our minds aren’t that analytical anyways. So then, using conventions in moderation can be acceptable, as long as you understand the properties that make up a convention, you’re sure those properties serve your game idea well and you are careful not to leap to conclusions or avoid answering hard questions.

What the fuck is an RTS?? I mean really, what are you talking about? You can do anything you want in the whole world, and what you want is to remake starcraft? Okay fine, you’re not making a clone, I get it. But you’re making a genre, for some reason, instead of making a video game. What about “RTS” do you actually like? Do you want to command a massive army? Do you want to manage the logistics of a war-time civilization? Do you want to outwit your opponents through superior tactics and strategy? Because none of those things require you to drag a box to select units and right click to make them move to a position. Why not start from the beginning and actually explore what YOU want, instead of starting out with a massively complex template? Then you can have a game that’s just for you, that you enjoy and that you personally built all on your own. And more than likely, other people will like it too, because we’re all desperate for fresh gaming experiences. People want so badly to play new games. Not old games with new graphics or minor tweaks to stale formulas. Even if your new game is a bit lop-sided, because making new things is hard, people will probably enjoy it and deeply appreciate that you gave them something they’ve never played before. If you really work hard to discover something new, you may even invent a genre yourself.

5. What is your favorite era?

This is tricky, but I think it will have to go to Luna/Blood Moon era. It's my favourite title track, as well as my favourite concept and styling - everything was just so perfect, and the members having been so involved in the entire process only makes it even more meaningful. And then it of course was also the era they finally got their first win. It was a truly special era.

7. What’s the first song you heard?

A Song Written Easily - It was recommended to me on YT while I was searching for a different song, but since it wasn't what I'd been looking for I was initially disappointed. Now it's my most listened song of all time on spotify.

13. Who would be your best friend and why?

Seoho is my bias, and I think we have a lot of things in common, but I honestly feel like it might actually be Keonhee. Not sure why, he just has that vibe that kinda reminds me of a close friend of mine.

16. A subunit you would like?

A Seoho and Leedo subunit; it would be so powerful. Both of them can sing, rap and dance, and I think their voices and personalities compliment each other really well. If we ever get a subunit, I really wouldn't be surprised if this is the one. I have absolutely no idea what name this unit could have though, I tried to think of one but couldn't.

Long Live the King/Louis era, I'd been interested in them since pre-debut, but this was what finally pushed me into stanning them. I love the song and the album and the styling is just so good. I love how hard they committed to the rokkokko fashion.

Excalibur, I'd seen the teasers and was quite excited for their debut.

13. Who would be your best friend and why?

I've only recently managed to finally learn all the members, so I'm afraid I can't really judge this properly - but just from the impression I have now I'll say Dann. He just seems really cool.

“Mixed Multitude” Exodus 12:33-42 and Acts 2:5-11, 41-42

I love our “We Cry Justice” reading today (#25 by Daniel Jones) and the hot take on “mixed multitudes.” I loved the MLK quote it started with too, including, Pharaoh '”kept the slaves fighting among themselves.” This “trick” of having most of the resources in a society “float” to the top while leaving the multitudes fighting for the crumbs is well known, and unfortunately still well used. Take a look at governmental budgets and then the people advocating for various just causes – who accidentally end up fighting each other to prove the imperative nature of their own concern AT THE cost of the others. (Fixable, it turns out, by fixing the regressive tax code so it doesn't magnify inequality.)

Mr. Jones points out that Ancient Egypt was “an empire based on violence and injustice that sacrificed lives to the accumulation of wealth and its paranoia, viewed the murder of children as a fair price for keeping control.”1 I can't decide if I should respond “OUCH” or “PREACH” to that one. He goes on to say that the mixed multitude – the Israelites and those who suffered along with them in the empire – built a new society based on God's laws. “This higher law proclaims the accumulation of individual wealth to be immoral and demands freedom for enslaved people, forgiveness of debts, care for the environment, and the responsibility of everyone to their neighbors.” And THAT's why we call it the Promised Land.

The holiness of this mixed multitude, seeking shared goodness for each other instead of competing with each other and creating community out of shared need is found in Acts 2 as well. We normally only focus on Acts 2 on Pentecost, but it is another example that when God's Spirit is at work, people are bonded together across boundaries that might otherwise seem too impossible to cross.

God seems particularly committed to mixed multitudes.

Now this is funny thing to say right now I think. This week I've watched the incredible power of God's spirit move in the intractable-until-now United Methodist Church and all of a sudden there is hope abundant! And, truthfully, that hope abundant comes BECAUSE of disaffiliation, it comes because we split. It comes because we BROKE bonds.

Part of me - ok, a really large part of me – wants to simply say that those who left identified with the oppressor and oppressed God's beloveds and we are better off without them. But God has said to love our enemies, and I'm pretty sure being that petty isn't appropriate for a preacher... while preaching at least ;)

We who value the wide diversity of God's creation may find it easy to hear about the mixed multitudes and the amazing ways God's work to overturn oppression pulls people together. But I also know that we who value the wide diversity of God's creation sometimes find it really hard to deal with those who... don't.

Right?

It's OK, I know I'm right.

It turns out to be easier to be in a mixed multitude where people agree mixed multitudes are awesome than it is to be in a mixed multitude where there is a diversity of opinions about the value of diversity.

Or, maybe there is a bigger truth here. God's amazing work to overcome oppression and pull people together is REAL. But it is hard to live in community – there are ALWAYS differences. I think often of the story a little later in Acts when the incredibly diverse Body of Christ in its infancy already had issues with food distribution being fairly managed. Humans come into community with differences. There is no community without conflict. There is no community without bias. There is no community in prefect agreement – except maybe those who all defer to a strong-man leader.

The truth is that God binds us together. And, I think sometimes we get to the point when the best choice is to let some bonds go. Because not everything is now as it should be. We know this about marriage itself – there are times when two people have hurt each other enough that the best, most loving way forward, is apart. This week showed very clearly that all the dreams I've ever heard God dreaming for The United Methodist Church are possible – now that we're broken. And, to be fair, I hear from those in the Global Methodist Church that they think all the dreams they ever heard God dreaming are now possible there. The issue has ALWAYS been that we hear God differently.

So I've been thinking about what the moral, Christ-like response is to those with whom we have fundamental-values-level-differences. And I hear the echos of Jesus on the cross, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do” and I think that's the actual start of it. I hear it in Martin Luther King teaching about the goal of his work being to bring everyone together, not to bring down the oppressor. Let's hear him:

Now there is a final reason I think that Jesus says, “Love your enemies.” It is this: that love has within it a redemptive power. And there is a power there that eventually transforms individuals. That’s why Jesus says, “Love your enemies.” Because if you hate your enemies, you have no way to redeem and to transform your enemies. But if you love your enemies, you will discover that at the very root of love is the power of redemption. You just keep loving people and keep loving them, even though they’re mistreating you. Here’s the person who is a neighbor, and this person is doing something wrong to you and all of that. Just keep being friendly to that person. Keep loving them. Don’t do anything to embarrass them. Just keep loving them, and they can’t stand it too long. Oh, they react in many ways in the beginning. They react with bitterness because they’re mad because you love them like that. They react with guilt feelings, and sometimes they’ll hate you a little more at that transition period, but just keep loving them. And by the power of your love they will break down under the load. That’s love, you see. It is redemptive, and this is why Jesus says love. There’s something about love that builds up and is creative. There is something about hate that tears down and is destructive. “love your enemies.”2

So, dear ones, I'm going to keep on loving the Global Methodist Church, because I deeply believe God asks me to. Further, I believe there are people in that church who need it, and others who will need it. And, apparently, we are supposed to love Christian Nationalists too – even when they misrepresent our tradition. (Pulling no punches today.)

I guess no one every said being a follower of Jesus was easy, huh? But, friends, it is the season of Easter and we are told over and over again that God is Love and Love wins and NOTHING, not even death, can stop God's power of love. So, dear mixed multitude, let's keep on loving on EVERYONE even when they don't seem to know how broad God's love is yet. Let's be accused of being naive with our love. Let's be radical, and a little too broad with it. Let's be like God. Amen

Im not someone who gets very interested in creators of the media I enjoy (idk what my fave band looks like or their names) and I was only a very casual watcher of tlou adaptation and gameplays. I only recently found out Neil Druckmann is a Zionist and that tlou2 was “inspired by the Israel-Palestine conflict.”

This is to say Im not the most informed and have no desire to watch the podcasts this Vice article gets quotes from, the article was more than enough information for me. There’s some reddit threads out there too but I digress.

Some excerpts that I think sum up the article, Druckmann’s bias, and explains the criticisms people have always had about tlou’s writing.

But "cycles of violence" are a poor way to understand a conflict in a meaningful way, especially if one is interested in finding a solution. The United States, for example, hasn't been at war in Afghanistan for almost 20 years because it's trapped in a "cycle of violence" with the Taliban. It is deliberately choosing to engage with a problem in a way that perpetuates a conflict. Just as the fantasy of escaping violence by simply walking away from it is one that only those with the means to do so can entertain, the myth of the "cycle of violence" is one that benefits the side that can survive the status quo

In The Last of Us Part II's Seattle, Scars and Wolves hurt each other terribly, and the same can be said about Israel and Palestine. The difference is that when flashes of violence abate and the smoke clears, one side continues to live freely and prosper, while the other goes back to a life of occupation and humiliation. One side continues to expand while the other continues to lose the land it needs to live. Imagining this process as some kind of symmetric cycle benefits one side more than the other, and allows it to continue.

As a result, The Last of Us Part II never quite justifies its fatalism.

This seems to be The Last of Us Part II's thesis: humans experience a kind of "intense hate that is universal," as Druckmann told The Post, which keep us trapped in these cycles.

But is intense hate really a universal feeling? It's certainly not one that I share. I, too, have seen the video of the 2000 mob killing of the Israeli soldiers in Ramallah, and it's horrific. Yet, my immediate response wasn't "Oh, man, if I could just push a button and kill all these people that committed this horrible act, I would make them feel the same pain that they inflicted on these people," as Druckmann said.

This is not a universal feeling as much as it's a learned way of seeing the world.
