First fic lines
I was tagged by @mxmollusca @ghostalservice @naranjapetrificada @spirker! (sorry if I missed someone) I've done something similar before I think but I've posted more since, so here we go!
Post the first line of your ten most recent fics, and see if there are any patterns.
1. like sugar to my heart (gift for @ghostalservice): There’s a vending machine in the private staff-only corridor of Blackbeard’s that Stedeth loves.
2. like a bird (collab with @ghostalservice): When Stedeth-Esgarrouth-Bonnetil was a very young Andalite, he thought that he’d like to be a dome ship when he grew up.
3. Stede’s Cursed Red Suit as a Metaphor for Grief and Moving On: “Oh, fuck off!” Stede wails.
4. Calypso's Dawn: Ed remembers Stede’s shocking strength from the night before, and it stokes the heat growing in his belly.
5. Life as a Series of Forward Rolls: Stede Bonnet is a forty-something years old man who owns Barbie dolls.
6. Did you mean to do that?: Stede pulls his hand away to find his palm slick with blood.
7. Perfectly Ordinary Tuesday (collab with @ferventrabbit): That morning Stede wakes up with Ed’s arm draped over his chest, Ed’s hair spilling in every possible direction across his skin.
8. Foundation Repairs (gift for @mossgroves): They’re in their innkeeper era.
9. Silky Smooth: Stede regretted almost nothing from giving up his old life, in favor of returning to the man he loved.
10. $20 Wedding Dress (collab with @veeagainsttheday and @ghostalservice): Ed puts on his scowly face just before he pushes through the front door of the dark bar he randomly chooses.
Mostly this tells me I've been writing more of Stede POV lately (several of these fics like #5, #7, and #8 switch POVs). I love Ed POV so much though. Many of these fics are modern AU (#5, #10) / Animorphs AU (#1 and #2). I've got missing scenes from s2 (#3, #4, #6, #9). And then there's innkeeper era (#7 and #8). Some start mid-action, most require some set-up prose to get us where we're headed. I like that they all start differently.
Also YAY for collabs and gifts; I love community. The collabs represent some of the most fun I've had in ages, maybe ever!
Tagging at random, feel free to post your own even if I don't tag!! @sweet-bazzle-bean @ferventrabbit @adhduck @darcylindbergh @robertaseaport @petrichorpirate @yerbamansa @chocolatepot

Writing Patterns (tag game)
Rules: list the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern!
I was tagged by @iwritesometimes Thank you this was so much fun!Ten fics is a good long way back, the oldest of these were posted in 2021.
It was little known, and hardly at all marked in the annals of Gondor, for all that it was etched with remarkable clarity in Aragorn’s memory, that for three short, yet terrifying, hours the hobbit Peregrin Took had held full sway of the seating chart for the King’s wedding (Lord of the rings, Gen)
2. Billy had been nursing his slug of whiskey in the saloon long enough that it had grown warm from his hands as he turned the glass round and round (The Magnificent Seven (2016), Billy/Goody)
3. ”But why do I have to come?” Johnny whines from the backseat like a five-year old, as if going to a Christmas party with free booze was some sort of unimaginable hardship just because it required a button down, but Amanda could ask herself the same question (unfinished Kobra Kai fic from Morgue files)
4. Barak’s quarters in the Rivan citadel were large and comfortable, they were close to Anheg’s as befitted the Earl of Trellheim and the king’s cousin (The Belgariad, NSFW, Silk/Barak)
5. “Do you have your hat, and your allergy pills? And hand sanitizer in those tiny little bottles?” (Glass Onion, NSFW, Benoit Blanc/Phillip Blanc)
6. “You are bringing Lan Wangji to Vulcan for Christmas?” Jiang Cheng said, pausing with his glass of juice halfway to his mouth. (The Untamed X Star Trek, Lan Zhan/Wei Ying NSFW)
7. After their midnight revelations Billy had optimistically imagined that as soon as Sam had closed the door behind him he and Goody fall on each other like those insufferable couples at airports, or possibly wolves at the zoo feeding time (The Magnificent Seven (2016) Billy/Goodnight).
8. Once the dust had settled and humanity had come to the conclusion that, by and large, it had survived there had been months of celebrations, galas and press tours (Pacific Rim, Herrman Gottleib/Newton Geiszler)
9. The first time it happens it's on the boat, in the confusion of the shark returning, the noise of the barrels thumbing against the hull and water rushing in and everyone running around (Jaws, Martin Brody/Matt Hooper).
10. Ward spends the fall holiday on New Penzance. (Moonrise Kingdom, Scoutmaster Ward/Sharp).
I dont really know if I can see a pattern, I would say that since I am pretty much a situational comedy writer I tend to start with the set up for the situation as soon as possible. In four the whole premise of the fic is in the first sentence so I guess I start with exposition and when I have the table set so to speak its easier to get off the ground.

(0.0) Aaaaand that's nine... Yeah, my productivity hit a wall this month. Otherwise I'd have more to show... Also noticing that I tend to start with short "jump right in" lines. ('0.0) Not sure if that's a good or bad thing lol.
Anywho! I shall gently burden @amaiguri, @moonfeatherblue, and @thetruearchmagos along with anyone else if you wish to do the thing. (^v^)

Ten first lines
Thanks to @lordfenric-writes for the tag!
I don't think I've ever done this tag for Project Darwin, so here goes with first lines of chapters...
Tumblr media
Prologue
The last stubborn leaves clung desperately to the trees against tearing November winds when Darwin Eaves arrived home for the first time in almost a decade.
01
The day the Eaveses moved in, Gran sent me out with a tin of warm shortbread wrapped in a tea towel.
02
Later that summer, Amber and I were lounging in her back garden on a scratchy blanket with satin edging that we’d stolen from one of the spare bedrooms, drinking cartons of sugary orange juice cold from the milkman’s truck and playing with the kitten.
03
The unusual aridity that summer was followed by more rain than I’d ever seen in my short life.
04
The following summer, Amber and Darwin went away for a whole month with their parents.
05
The day the Eaveses came home was oppressively humid.
06
The following summer, I was thirteen and hovering in the space between feeling almost like an adult and still being treated mostly like a child by everyone around me.
07
December arrived, carried on storms that rolled in over the mountains and washed autumn away with great oceans of rain.
08
The next two years passed in a gathering swell of academic pressure, punctuated by teenage growth spurts and the gently magnetic formation of friendship groups.
09
Another Christmas came and went with my time split between the gentle cosiness of my house and the tension hanging alongside pristine decorations in the Eaveses’.
Tumblr media
Tagging @zebee-nyx, @sunset-a-story and @romances-not-tragedies if you'd like to do it, with an open tag for anyone else who wants to join in 💜

Ten First Lines
@deanwax got me, thank you ^.-
I'm tagging @pb-dot @starbuds-and-rosedust @scifimagpie @stesierra and @sparrowcraft
Rules: Post the first line from 10 chapters of your current WIP.
Two
The boss was not at the drop.
Four (grabbin' two lines because the first is so short >.>)
He was warm. So warm against the chill that had chased Delmas all halfnight that, as the door slammed shut behind them, he found he could wait not a second more to taste that warmth.
Eight
“Pretty sure this counts as restraints, boss.”
Eleven
Lulusara Drenkal—mother of all wolves and recent recipient of the object of her greatest desire—was cackling.
Thirteen
Bellacara Pri, blood-starved and pacing in her glittering mansion—floating in the light-rich skies of Upper Dolor, shrouded in gold and the protections of well-paid witches—had enough of her board’s nonsense.
Fifteen
Minara curled, tighter into herself, aching for the power of age and the beast she had yet to unlock as all around her the world howled.
Seventeen
Fuck, the word snapped through his thoughts and not the lips he had intended and Bosch growled…through the thick cloth that gagged him.
Nineteen
Nash’s beast peeled open with the lids of Som’s eyes, sloughing off the matted black of its fur and sallow pinks of its fat to reveal the smooth, brown skin that itched beneath.
Twenty-one
Once again—I must insist—Bosch was fine.
Twenty-five
Som’s eyes were dipping, ever so slightly, signaling the waning noon and tinting all his brilliant yellows with orange and pink.

First Lines
Thank you, @spiced-wine-fic!
If I've understood the rules right, it's the first lines from my ten most recent fics, and see if there's any patterns. Here we go...
To Whatever End
“It…he says there are others like him, across the Sea.”
Dancing In the Dark
Curufinwë hated these visits.
Couldn't Drag Me Away
Elrond heard the music well before he entered his daughter’s library sanctuary.
Drunken Lullabies
It had been a terrible day.
Echoes By The Water
Círdan is too old to show that he is startled, but he had not expected that Elrond’s middle daughter could keep so still.
Busted
Elwing woke early, and wondered why she had.
Return
Anairë looked up in astonishment when the door burst open.
Looking Forward
Rilmë was surprised when Yúlon turned up first thing in the morning.
Patience Is A Virtue
Carnistir poured the tea with the same precision he would stitch a seam, Elenwë reflected.
Pure As the Driven Snow*
Finnick knew there was something about the District 12 girl from the second the cameras found her face.
Daddy's Girl
Elrond cast his mind about for his daughter.
*not Tolkien - this one's a Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes compliant Hunger Games fic.
Pattern... it looks like I tend to establish right out of the gate who we're dealing with?
I think I am one of the last tagged on this... tagging @cycas, @hhimring, @jane-ways, @elesianne, @idrilsscribe, @joyfullynervouscreator, @naryaflame, @cilil, @jaz-the-bard, and @starspray without any recollection whether or not you've already been tagged. Also, if there's anyone wanting in on this who hasn't been tagged yet - go for it! (If I tagged you, I don't think it's obligatory to link the works. I did because I've been particularly lousy at cross-posting of late.)

From AASOAF 3:
Axtapor - 25 Sun's Dawn: I steadied my blade in the direction of [REDACTED], or what I supposed was him, and the hellish creature who’d been speaking before.
Wilkes - 25 Sun's Dawn: “Tell me you’re certain about her.” I commanded, already knowing what their response would be.
Fay - 26 Sun's Dawn: “So this is what became of it…” I remarked as I looked at [REDACTED] from the sea.
Mariel - 26 Sun's Dawn: “Nay. She will no go anywhere with ye’s!” Axtapor hissed as my eyes slowly opened and adjusted to the darkness around me.
Mariel - 27 Sun's Dawn: “So then my father said that perhaps he should have brought the chickens inside instead of the ducks as he’d asked.” I said with a giggle.
Axtapor - 27 Sun's Dawn: “Where be she?! It be well past sundown and she nay been returned!” I roared at [REDACTED].
Mariel - 28 Sun's Dawn: I squinted into the early morning sun, finding myself comfortably tucked under a few blankets and the recognizable scratchy canvas of a pack resting beneath my cheek.
Axtapor - 28 Sun's Dawn: “Is she awake yet?” Wilkes asked.
Fay - 29 Sun's Dawn: “These will take time to get used to.”
Mariel - 29 Sun's Dawn: “Foodstuffs and…medical fixin’s?” Axtapor asked.

10 first lines challenge
tagged by @whimsyswastry and @quietborderline. Thanks for the tags lovelies. Tagging (with no pressure) @monsterrae1 @alyxmastershipper @tkwritesdumbassassins @outtoshatter @elisela @missanniewhimsy and anyone else who wants to play along.
Rules: Share the first line of your last ten published works or as many as you are able to and see if there are any patterns!
Afterthoughts (911 codas): He fucked up big time today.
An Andromeda Tale (Mass Effect Andromeda, MReyder) No one asked me what I wanted to do in life or if I wanted to do this.
Family, Familia, ‘Ohana (911/H50 Buddie, McDanno) The low brrrr noise of a phone on vibrate ringing was irritating as Steve had set his phone down unattended on the corner of Danny’s desk before leaving for a meeting with the governor about budgets and how 5-0 needed to at least make a show of pretending to have one.
Suspicions (Teen Wolf, Firefighter!Derek series) Noah had always had his suspicions.
The First Spectre (911/Mass Effect, eventual Buddie) Lieutenant Edmundo Diaz—known to his family as Eddie or everyone else as Lt Diaz or just Diaz—sat in the copilot’s chair on the bridge listening to Flight Lieutenant Han, aka Chimney, grumble about their newest mission orders.
Mana’olana (H50, McDanno) He doesn’t know what to do after Rachel dropped her bombs on him, obliterating any sense of purpose he had in his life.
Sleepless in LA (911, Buddie) They buried Shannon on a Tuesday—she’d died the previous Thursday.
Promise Me You Won’t Let Me (Wheel of Time, Cauthor) Doubt eats at him.
Death, Rebirth and the Jackal (Mass Effect/The Mummy (1999), MReyder) I am Anpu on the day of reckoning.
Fragments and Fractals (911, Buddie) Memory is a funny thing.
Pattern: run on sentences or short and sweet…. But i think i like to star with anchoring either an emotion or person immediately.

Ten Lines Tag
Tagged by @pandoras-comment-box here! Thank you :)
Gently tagging @zmwrites @rachaellawrites @violets-in-her-arms-writes and an open tag for anyone else! As always, no pressure :)
Rules: Share the first lines of the last ten things you’ve written.
(Some of these are first lines from each chapter of my WIPs and some are from random old pieces of writing!)
1. Adrin stared at the reflective glass that hung on his bedroom wall.
2. A sharp knock at the door interrupted Hettie as she coaxed the slumbering coals in the fireplace into lackluster flames.
3. Adrin wasn’t prepared for the chaos on the other side of the door.
4. The still of the silence revived her.
5. There was something dangerous about the Rameau name.
6. On his last day in his parent’s cellar, Aleksander summoned all the strength he possessed and freed the iron bolt that secured his shackles from the limestone.
7. Callie opened her eyes to a sky full of stars, a peculiar observation due to the fact that she was indoors.
8. Kiran stared into the eyes of a god.
9. When my sister picked me up from the hospital six months ago, the doctors told her that I was crippled by the prospect of being alone.
10. Aneira’s bare feet were cool against the hardwood floor as she carefully made her way down the hall, her movement hindered by the large object she dragged behind her.

First Ten Lines game
Rules: Share the first line of ten of your most recent fanfics (/one fanfic and original fiction) and then tag ten people. Don't have ten? Not to worry, just share what you have.
Thank you so much to @starkey for the tag and for supporting my need to yell about my own writing :’)
1. “Eddie’s pretty good at taking punches.” [There’s no sign of the morning coming, a Steddie fic that I wrote two chapters of, I’m so sorry everyone)
2. “ René swears the corridor has grown smaller since the last time he walked it.” [Wine-Dark, a very rough draft of a dark academia novel)
3. “ I must admit I barely noticed at first.” (Currently untitled story ft. paranormal mystery, haunted boarding school, and queer intimacy)
4. “ You kiss like a man about to be hanged, he was told once.” (Hanged Man, a novella I’m redrafting for Camp Nano! A historical romance between a doctor and a serial killer who donates bodies to the hospital to be dissected, takes place in a decaying dystopian city.)
5. “ The air tastes like autumn, like cinnamon and scarves wound tight around thin necks to keep them from snapping.” (October Story, a horror-adjacent, romance-adjacent flash fiction piece)
6. “He thought it had always been there, growing up from the ground in a flourish that begged attention, lush green moss mottled with grey-brown bark, roots protruding from the earth beneath the porch, and encroaching, year after year, on the foundations beneath.” (Currently untitled story born from my desire for the vibes of “When Marnie Was There” but for it to actually be the queer coming of age romance we all deserved)
7. “ The van belonged to Claudia’s mother and we spent the first week of summer fixing it up.” (Nowhere, New England, a novella about teenagers who road trip to a graduation beach party that turns out to be a yearly sacrifice to an eldritch sea god)
8. “Today, I open my eyes to yellow; it streams through the half-open curtains, curls in patches on the concrete walls, drips down to congeal in puddles with the dust on the floor.” (Colourfall, a short story about a strange world and finding connection in dark places)
9. “ God fucking dammit! Nothing. There’s nothing. You bougie assholes have three fucking kids and you’re telling me you deal with them all completely sober?” (Currently untitled script about three people hiding in a house during a zombie apocalypse - the first lines are technically stage directions, but this is the first spoken one)
10. ‘“They’ll be here soon,” he says.’ (Hot Season, a short story about sad gay post-apocalyptic farmers. I know it’s not a very interesting first line, but I had to include it because this story has recently consumed my soul!)
Tagging @orestesdreams-pyladesloves @adorablecrab @buildarocketboys @montparnassee and anyone else who wants to!

Ten first lines
@totallysilvergirl tagged me. (Thank you, this was fun!) I’ll go newest to oldest.
Rules: share the first lines of ten of your most recent fanfics and tag ten people. If you have written less than ten, don’t be shy and share anyway.
1. Stede never loved Mary, he knows that now; not as a husband should. (WIP, mostly complete: Some nights you are the sea)
2.  “… and huge – I mean really huuuuge knockers!” Calico Jack roared, to the cheers of the inebriated crew around them. (A Dark and Hollow Thing)
3.  To all profound thinkers in the realms of Science who may chance to read this tale, greetings! (A Martian Stole My Body!)
4. Suppose there is nothing but the hive: That there are drones and workers And queens, and nothing but storing honey— (Material things as well as knowledge and wisdom)— For the next generation, this generation never living, Except as it swarms in the sun-light of youth, Strengthening its wings on what has been gathered, And tasting, on the way to the hive From the clover field, the delicate spoil. (The Hive)
5.  I found him there not eight months after he died. (Lhasa)
6.  The late-afternoon winter sun filtered weakly through the great front window of the University of California’s medical library. (Opportunities We’ve Had Along the Way)
7.  Once a term during the school year, Mycroft Holmes came down from Oxford to visit his younger brother at Winchester College where the boy spent the greater part of his year, and had since he was five years old. (Into the Greenwood)
8.  Sherlock was tired: tired to the point of giddiness. (Retain for Future Analysis)
9.  She wakes to raucous laughter in the street, unsteady footsteps on the stair. (At once I blossom green and wither brown)
10.  Hiya, John. It’s Tom. (Drunk texts and questionable life choices)
Tag, friends! You’re it.

First lines
Well since I have no shame and am dying to show my work anyway time for me to do the tag that @thal-ent put on my dash here -
I don’t have 10 WIPS nor finished books but I can at least put in here five or six lines-
Let’s start in reverse chronological order of when I’ve written them and my opinions on them~
“Heeeeeeeeeeey.” Danganronpa, the Art of Creating Hope, first line of the Prologue. That was supposed to mark the tone of the story in a way, less metaphoric and more down-to-earth than the killing game I’ve written before, but I’m not a big fan anymore. I think I’ll try to change that in the rewrite incoming.
“I’ve never been a fan of school integration parties.” Danganronpa, Abyss of Despair, same as TAoCH. This kind of poses the context without going directly in the middle of the subject, and let people know how my protagonist is going to be, honestly not quite bad-
“Does that thing still work ?” Genius of the Lamp. This is from a recording, which in my way of storytelling begins every chapter, so I don’t really have a purpose for it.
“Azilis’s story is from it’s moment of birth tainted of blood. Azilis Chronicles, Advent of the Master book first. The prologue actually holds a much darker tone than the first chapter, to mark a discrepancy between what the first narrators think happens vs what really happens.
“In the great palace of white marble, ornated of gold and amber, all seemed well.” Lysara IbRu’Ael, Fire and Ashes. As you can guess later, all was not well.
This is actually interesting to see tbh, even though I’m not keen of making my first line really be remembered in my stories. They have to catch the readers interest, but aside from that...

Ten First Lines (Again)
So, I already went ahead and did my most recent ten first lines here, but as @moonlightandstarshimmer actually tagged me this time, I thought I'd share ten more first lines from fandoms other than Back to the Future that I've written for! All links lead to AO3!
FFHQ (M, multi-fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean, BBC Sherlock, Iron Man, Game of Thrones, Star Wars): “I thought we only needed one sub today?”
Principles of Compromise (T, Pirates of the Caribbean): A figure blew passed the window of the blacksmith's shop in the alley.
Unprecedented Youth (G, Pirates of the Caribbean): Jack stood idle amongst the drunks and wenches of Tortuga’s finest, the bunch that had claimed the Faithful Bride tavern as their own.
The Captain (G, Pirates of the Caribbean): The heavy door slammed off the wall, causing a fine stream of ink to steer across the paper recklessly, marring an excellent display of penmanship.
What to Expect When She's Expecting (T, Iron Man): "Vegas? I thought you were taking Pepper out?"
Perignon & Paleobotany (T, Jurassic World): "In the two years I've been with IBRIS, we've made phenomenal headway with this particular group of raptors."
Vibrations on the Air (G, Copying Beethoven): Eighteen months to the day, Anna Holtz was handed the letter that would change her life.
A Mercy, Tolerant (T, Star Wars Sequel Trilogy): He was the Master of the Knights of Ren.
Extra Dry, Extra Olive (T, Iron Man): It was unacceptable, the way she had just behaved.
Under the Weather (G, Mary Poppins): It was not a day of promise if you looked out the window of Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane.
Thanks again for the tag, my friend! Enjoy!

Ten first lines
So, I've been taggued by @uefb and @scamanderishredmayniac . Thank you, both.
Rules: Share the first lines of ten of your most fanfics and tag ten people. If you’ve written fewer than 10 fics, don’t be shy and share anyway. If you’re an artist or meta-writer, feel free to find a way to participate if you’d like. :)
I took off the French ones (they have their English counterpart, and there is a link in AO3). Also, a lot of my fic' have something supposed to be a Haïku in French (it's not really that, but, well, approximation), so I skip that line too as ... well, French.
Links are on each fic' title.
1. Caribbean Blue
The sun softly warmed her skin, as her tenuous muslin shirt flitted around her, following the rhythm of the slow breeze. Her bare feet were sinking in the hot
2. Happy Birthday Queenie
It was a dark and cold night, and the air was full of a gloomy atmosphere. In this icy twilight of early January, between the grim ashy walls with
3. We wish you a Ver(r)y Chaotic Christmas
In this glacial night at the end of December, the magic was already operating, and the snowflakes twirled in the breeze, before they ended their ballet against
4. First Times
On that Thursday morning, the sky was heavy as a couple was peacefully walking in the streets of New York.
5. My Dear Sister
New Orleans, November 11, 1928
6. A pub, a niffler and some Quidditch
The weather was warm in this afternoon of late August. The sun was still high in the sky and its rays reflected themselves on the windows of the
7. Happy ending, new beginning
When Queenie Goldstein woke up that morning, she felt disoriented. Everything was different. It was … warm around her. Before she even opened
8. History eternally repeats itself
This adventure had an air of déjà vu, it sounded too familiar to his ears. They were in Central Park Zoo, chasing a little loose cute beast. And it was
9. Early Days of Love
Tina woke up in the silent appartment, it was so early. She hated to be here now, she felt so alone for too many months. She didn't really sleep that night. She
10. London Calling
1933
And as I just translated them, I add two of my WIP , just as a motivation to keep writing and translating (same for Caribbean Blue and Early Days of Love)
Reflektor : The dust fell, powdering the teal Converses with the ocher cloud that he stirred up with every step. The thin young man
A blue woolen ocean : The humid air of the sea galloped in their direction, lashing their faces with its salty spray. The man adjusted his scarf
And I'll just tag @occamyeggshells @literary-creature and @forbiddengalaxy as all others I know have been tagged with me

I was tagged by @laurfilijamesl for this and it seemed like too much fun to pass up! I've seen a few mutuals do it over the last few days or so and seeing the patterns has been so interesting!
Rules: list the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern!
Sunny days were Nina’s favorite.
2. Kaia crept along the edge of the pathway, ready to dive into the foliage to her left if the need arose and with the way orcs seemed to have taken over practically all of the woodland areas of Middle Earth, the need was most likely going to arise and soon.
3. Kaia breathed a sigh of relief when with a gentle, airy sigh, Nora finally drifted off to sleep.
4. He watched her.
5. “Dr. Durin?”
6. Sophie Asharm held tightly to the little hand in hers.
7. “You can swing at me, you know."
