Why the Koopalings Were Gone For So Long:

After several failures, the Koopalings were grounded from ruling domains and trying to conquer the kingdom. When they begged and pleaded with their dad to let them try again, he finally conceded to giving them a chance— on a much smaller scale. They could each control one (1) hotel. (Except Iggy. A small detail I love about your fic is Bowser casually using his shell as storage (Whether that's a koopa thing or just Bowser being Bowser)

I imagine it depends on the koopa when it comes to preferences. Considering Kamek, for example, has his robes it isn't easy to reach back there, he would require other means. [Plus by his age, his rotator cuffs might not be the best.] But that's what magical sleeves are for! And you see that being used when he takes out his crystal ball and scepter from them.

But many koopas? Oh yeah, shell space is just free storage. Especially for the larger koopas that have the luxury of affording charms to be placed to make hammer spaces.

[Admittedly this inspiration, and the world having cell phones as a whole, was completely taken from the first Mario + Rabbids game. I was enamored by Junior pulling out a phone from behind his back, as Bowser checked in on him to make sure he was being good. I'm glad you like it though, because I also thought it as fun and inventive.]
