OC Deep Dive Questionnaire Tag
A set of 20 questions to get to know your OC!
I was tagged by @anamoon63 and I thought I'd do Anh!
Tumblr media
What uncommon/common fear do they have?
Public disgrace. She's very attached to her reputation and the way she's perceived. If people saw her as someone unreliable or worse, unethical, she would die of shame.
Do they have any pet peeves?
Self-entitlement and machismo.
What are 3 items you can find in their bedroom?
Figurines, video games and her bulky, wide frame glasses.
What do they notice first in a person?
The way they move and take up space.
On a scale of 1 to 10, how high is their pain tolerance?
Anh is quite sensitive but she's also determined not to show that she's in pain. I'd say it's a 7.
Do they go into fight or flight mode when under pressure?
Anh will FIGHT. Not to say that she's not scared, but if you pressurize her, her response will always be to defend herself.
Do they come from a big family/are they a family person?
She's not close to her mom (Fei is quite the opposite of whom Anh wants to be), and she's not particularly maternal or caring. But she's very close both to her dad and her sister, the first on an intellectual level and the second on an emotional level. The notion of 'family' is important to her, but she sees it more as a duty than as a support system.
What animal represents them best?
Anh is a hedgehog. Showing her spikes when teased, but actually cute and lovable once you get to know her.
What is a smell that they dislike?
She's disgusted by any body odor.
Have they broken any bones?
Nope. Hopefully that won't happen.
How would a stranger likely describe them?
Uptight and not accommodating. Seems smart but putting on airs.
Are they a night owl or a morning bird?
All members of the Wong family are early birds out of habit.
What is a flavor they hate and a flavor they love?
She's not a fan of acidic food and she's got a sweet tooth.
Do they have any hobbies?
She's a bit of a geek, so: video games, manga and anime. :) And birds. She loves birds and knows how to care for them.
Boom, surprise birthday party! How do they react to surprises?
No one would throw her a surprise birthday party. Seriously. She's not close enough to anyone besides her sister. Who would even be invited?
Do they like to wear jewelry?
She's got plain pearl earrings that she wears almost all the time. And cute, flower earrings for special occasions. She loves them but won't wear them too often because she doesn't want to be seen as girly.
Do they have neat or messy handwriting?
As expected, she's got a precise, clear handwriting. ;)
What are two emotions they feel the most?
Annoyance and determination.
Do they have a favorite fabric?
Not particularly, but it needs to be breathable.
What kind of accent do they have?
None.
I'm tagging @kimmiessimmies, @nekrophoria, @papermint-airplane, @heldhram and @danjaley!

Full Future Redeemed and Xeno series spoilers.
Interesting that A and Alpha’s conflict kind of mirrors that of Pneuma and Logos (Pyra/Mythra and Malos). A embodies Alvis’ humanity built through their journeys first with Shulk and now with Matthew. Those experiences embue them with a compassion for humanity that makes them fight in defence of it. Kind of like how Pyra and Mythra found something new to live for and used that as a drive to confront Malos.
Malos and Alpha act on a cold nihilistic sense of pragmatism inherited from their human masters, that makes them dismissive of humankind and wish to erase them. It even works in a naming sense as ‘Pneuma’ translates to ‘breath’ and in philosophical terms means ‘the breath of life’ or the concept of a soul or a spark of humanity. While ‘Logos’ literally means word or thought. One acts out of the compassion of their soul. The other acts out of the cold logic of their mind.
That’s without even getting into how Logos and Pneuma embody the animus/anima dichotomy that exists in every single Xeno game and has roots in both Jung and Plato (disclaimer I only have a layman’s knowledge of this philosophy so please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong) Every Xeno game has had characters who embody opposites, usually aligned as masculine and feminine respectively. Fei and Elly, the Contact and the Antitype both tied to the Zohar and to each other, and whose union finally freed it. KOS-MOS and chaos. embodying the order and unraveling of the universe respectively. Hell their powers are even explicitly called Animus and Anima, with chaos wielding the typically feminine Anima and KOS-MOS the more commonly masculine Animus, reflecting the concept of blurring the binary of these gendered concepts, that everyone has a little bit of both in them and that it’s proper and healthy to foster the two within you to become a more well rounded person. That’s why the harmony of Fei and Elly is important. The Animus and the Anima need each other, and if there is strife between them, all hell breaks loose.
It comes up in the Xenoblade games as well. The fraught conflict and lack of harmony between the god Zanza and the goddess Meyneth drives the Bionis and Mechonis to the brink of ruin, while the harmony between their vessels, Shulk and Fiora, is what paves the way for a new kinder world order. Come to think of it, Shulk and Fiora are themselves sort of a Logos and Pneuma respectively. Shulk is driven by thought and action. His defining trait is his intelligence and he showed the resolve and insight to take down god himself. Fiora is the soul, the breath of life, defined by her innocence and courageous spirit, who shared her soul with a god and learned to empathise with her, coming to understand the very nature of the universe as a result, and using that kindness to drive her forward. And as mentioned previously, Logos and Pneuma’s conflict in Xenoblade 2 also embodies this Animus/Anima divide. And that same sense of achieving unity and harmony with another person is embodied by the Ouroborous in Xenoblade 3. Humans need each other. We need people with different lives, different perspectives, different natures, in order to be whole. And the Ouroboros makes that literal.
Future Redeemed makes this divide explicit by pointing out that Logos is masculine, Pneuma is feminine, and Ontos exists between. Drawing attention to the gender motif just makes that more obvious. That being said, A and Alpha’s nonbinary swag kind of puts a neat new spin on a recurring motif of the series. Because they aren’t explicitly male or female even if they embody the same dichotomy. Even when these characters exist outside a gender binary, the philosophical concepts of discord or harmony between opposites still applies.
All this to say that Future Redeemed’s climax is deliberately evocative of the climaxes of Xenoblade 2 (by mirroring Pneuma and Logos this way), Xenoblade 1 (with Alpha styling themselves visually and musically after Zanza) and evokes motifs found throughout the wider Xeno series. I’ve said before that 3 does this to an extent with Z and Origin mirroring past antagonists, but Future Redeemed goes all in on it.
Why? Perhaps because it ties into Xenoblade 3’s theme of cycles, and making the same mistakes. The endless now is the embodiment of being arrested in a single a moment, a single mindset, the refusal to change, with N being the most hellish portrayal of what that can do to someone. Ultimately breaking those cycles is the only way to overcome Moebius and move forward. It’s literally a stagnant, ever looping circle (right down to its symbol). The same fight as in the previous games plays out in this prequel yet again in order to show that nothing has really changed. At least not yet. Aionios isn’t ready to make that step. They’re not ready to move beyond the same mistakes. Just look at Na’el and how close she came to repeating Klaus’ mistake: putting a faith in an unknowable entity, playing god and and discarding the old world in place of a new one. Like Malos once said, ‘they haven’t changed’. The people may not be ready right now. But by the time the main game starts, they will be.
So yeah, I guess Future Redeemed being the nostalgia fest it is makes it a perfect meta textual companion to Xenoblade 3. It wallows in the past in a way that is nostalgic, comforting but show us what needs to change while also warning us not to discard the past entirely. It’s a comforting reminder of your roots while still making it clear that eventually it will be time to move on. Xenoblade 3 then acts as a story about moving on, learning from the past, overcoming old traumas, and using that experience to move forward into new horizons. All while using the trappings of the old games not to be nostalgic, but as a springboard to tell a new story.
My word, I can’t express how much these games mean to me. Also yes, feel free to make a joke about how many of the games I’ve loved recently have been about people being trapped in cycles and metaphorically going round in circles.

Miles & Pearl + An Act of Kindness
Miles shifted in the stiff hospital seat as the girl sniffled beside him.
Wright had left her, frightened and alone, right there on the bench as he darted into the room to tend to Ms. Fey (she'd just been rescued, after all, and the hospital refused to allow more than one person in while she was still waking up).
All events conspired to leave one antsy Miles Edgeworth accompanying one weeping Pearl Fey.
He wasn't sure how to comfort her. How could he bring comfort to such a young person, who likely had no idea of object permanency and couldn't understand that her cousin was not gone, but simply recovering in the other room?
(It occurred to him that, perhaps, he did not understand children as well as he thought.)
The girl hiccuped again, silent tears trailing down her face, as her clumsy hands tangled in her shoelaces.
His fists automatically tightened their grip on one another as she scrubbed an arm across her face. "Everything alright, Ms. Fey?"
Pearl shivered through another batch of sniffles, still glancing to the side as she mumbled to herself. "M-Mister Nick always… ties my shoes for me."
He really should have asked. Miles couldn't explain what led him to act.
But he slipped to the floor in front of the girl anyway, kneeling on the rubber flooring in his suit pants while lifting her small foot to his thigh, taking her laces in hand. "I suppose he hasn't taught you, either. It's alright," he reassured her, looking up with sincere confidence. "The way shoe-tying is traditionally taught is really not as effective for little fingers."
Quitely, with patient words that his father used to whisper to him, he showed her how to tie her little sneakers, making small loops and twisting them up, double-knotted so they wouldn't fall loose. Then, she replicated his work on the opposite shoe, slowly and carefully working to follow his exact instruction.
When she was done, it was not neat or perfect. It likely wouldn't hold itself together for the hour.
"That's a wonderful job, Ms. Fey," he praised, smiling up at her. "It will take practice, but you won't need any help, soon enough. However, it's always alright to ask."
Miles worried he said something wrong when her lip wobbled, and he scrambled to pull out an apology that would stave off more of her sorrow.
Her tiny arms locked around his neck, and she buried her face into his jacket. "Thank you, Mr. Edgeworth."
-----
Phoenix shuffled out of the room, still agonized by Maya's condition and her lack of progress so far.
She would be alright, he urged himself. Everything would be alright.
His thoughts stalled completely when he caught sight of Pearl, snoring softly with her head resting against Miles' thigh.
He blinked a few times as the prosecutor met his gaze. "Wright! Is…" His voice dropped in volume as he startled awake, shifting his hand to cradle the girl's head for a mere breath. "How is she?"
Phoenix stammered his way through what the doctors shared while Miles nodded in silence. Then, still silent, he leaned forward and lifted a styrofoam cup from the ground.
"I got you… coffee. Well, Ms. Fey and I got you coffee, and I also got her a hot chocolate because she seemed rather… distraught, and I really hope that's alright-"
"Miles." The prosecutor's hand was almost frigid where Phoenix laid his own atop it, his knuckles bony and chilled, but somehow still warm underneath all those layers. "Of course it's alright. That's… It's wonderful. Thank you."
Miles blinked at him, stars shining below his brows, before his worry-tight lips shifted into something akin to a smile.
"Of course," he murmured, casting his eyes down to where their fingers curled together.

ranking the sparrows powers based on vibes
7. christopher - any cool thing about his powers is immediately negated by the fact that he is a CUBE, would suck to be him sorry chris ur still pretty cool i just like having opposable thumbs 3/10
6. marcus - sorry king we've seen it before 😔 5/10
5. jayme - funky concept! its just that the moment u dodge her spit venom thingy, shes kinda just 🧍‍♂️. the time it takes to get the venom, spit it out, and let it take effect makes her so vulnerable and unlike allisons rumors, which generally carry the same drawbacks as hers, it doesnt have much use outside of combat 6/10
4. alphonso - super fun! except it doesnt seem to always work? added negative of having to get hit first before u can do anything. still a really cool power to screw over ur enemies. would have been ranked higher if it was more like his comic counterpart. 6.5/10
3. ben - yes i know we've seen it before but the horror is still pretty dang neat when ben isnt terrified of his own power. also he gets a pass for it because unlike marcus, he IS biologically the same as our ben so there was no expectation that hed have different powers. ANYWAY having extra limbs that can grab shit from far away is extremely helpful both in and out of combat and the range it gives him gives him an edge over a lot of people. 8/10
2. sloane - very fun and cool and has many practical uses! she also uses it for telekinesis and its just a very very useful power for both kicking ass and daily life. added bonus of just ignoring a fundamental law that shackles most mortals. rip to yall but sloane is built different 10/10
1. fei - FIGHT ME ON THIS FEI HAS THE COOLEST POWER AMONG THE SPARROWS. SHE MAKES FREAKIN BIRDS AND THEY DO WHAT SHE NEEDS THEM TO DO AND ITS SO COOL. THE VISUALS THE VIBES THE POWER THIS WOMAN HAS IS TOO COOL 100000/10

Fic: Tales from Tianji Manor

Opening prompts for this series, if anyone is interested! feel free to leave a scenario prompt in my askbox ( ╹▽╹ ), just keep it sfw please!
Okay, she really should have thought this through.
He Xiaohui had been so carried away by the joy at seeing young love bloom in her Manor that she had forgotten all about how Di Feisheng had taken her sister hostage, once.
A fact that Guardian Zhan had not forgotten about, apparently.
“Guardian Zhan!” her worrywart husband was crying out, “lower your sword please! I'm sure there's an explanation for all of this!”
He looked frantically between the blade currently levelled at Di Feisheng's throat to Fang Xiaobao, urging him to say something in support.
Instead, all the instigator of her son said was “don't break any furniture, Lao-Di. You're in the wrong here,”
“Xiaobao!”
“With all due respect,” Fang Xiaobao says, unrepentant in the face of his father's disapproval, “he did use xiaoyi as a hostage, even if he didn't actually harm her,”
Her sister snorts, patting Guardian Zhan on the arm.
“That rascal Xiaobao has a point. Director Di took me as hostage, but there wasn't any real ill intent behind it,” He Xiaofeng says, quirking a grin at Di Feisheng, “I would've been fine if it weren't for Shan Gudao.”
“If you say so,” Guardian Zhan glowered, reluctantly sheathing his sword. Li Lianhua offers him a placid smile, as if watching Di Feisheng get held at swords point was a daily routine.
(Which, in all fairness, it probably was. It wasn't as if Di Feisheng was weak by any means, either. So, nothing to be alarmed about).
“Alright, no fighting at the dinner table,” He Xiaohui claps, with a tone that brooked no argument, “sit and eat. We're all family now, anyway.”
He Xiaohui had just seen her husband off, the man once again resuming the role of Minister Fang, busy as ever with palace affairs.
She had just turned back to her own pile of paperwork, resigning herself to burning the midnight oil- the burdens that came with being a sect leader- when a knock sounded at her door.
“Come in,” she called sharply, wondering if it was her sister, coming to discuss wedding arrangements.
A familiar mop of unruly hair popped in, uncharacteristically uncertain.
“What's there to be so cautious about in your own home?” He Xiaohui demanded, “get in.”
That got her Xiaobao to unfreeze, stumbling into her room gracelessly. Really! after all the training she had devised for him and he still walked as if he had two left feet!
“What is it? Did Xiao-Hua or A-Fei upset you?” she says drily, pushing aside her paperwork, “Surely you're old enough to resolve your own problems.”
Fang Xiaobao shook his head, taking a seat gingerly on the other side of her table, wrinkling his nose as he mulled over his words.
For all her jesting, He Xiaohui didn't actually think it was her son’s zhijis that upset him, he was past the age of running to her to whine about relationship problems already- it had to be something else bothering him.
So she waits for her son to parse out his thoughts, patiently waiting by reshuffling her paperwork, weeding out those she could pass off to her sister and separating them into two neat stacks.
It takes a while before he finally blurts out, “Is Father-no, does Father disapprove of A-Fei?”
Of all things, that was the last thing she expected to come out of Xiaobao’s mouth.
Unsure of how to approach the topic, she silently urges Xiaobao to elaborate.
“He seemed pretty uneasy around him during dinner.” he shrugs, trying for nonchalance, which would have worked if not for the downturn at the corners of his mouth.
He Xiaohui snorts, “Don't you know your father by now, Xiaobao? He's just nervous by nature.”
If she was being honest, yes, she could see how jittery her husband was throughout dinner, but she had attributed it to the way they had nearly come to blows before dinner, not because of Di Feisheng’s former title.
(For all that the man could sit through endless hours of courtroom politics, he was too easily scared by the slightest show of violence. Courtroom debates were far more terrifying than any deadly duel, in He Xiaohui's opinion).
In fact, most days she nearly forgot just who she was housing under her roof, too used to seeing them as merely Xiao-Hua and A-Fei. She'd forgotten how others who were not as accustomed to seeing them on the daily would view them.
“It's not just that,” Xiaobao frowns, “He was fine talking to Li Lianhua and Guardian Zhan, but he didn't even try to talk to A-Fei, even Xiao-yi noticed.”
Right. Of course her Xiaobao would take notice of details like that, given that it had been their first family dinner with her husband in attendance, and Xiaofeng had finally brought Guardian Zhan along as her fiance. He had been eager to introduce his own partners to his father, who had admittedly handled it less gracefully than a man of his social standing should have.
“Give him some time, not everyone is as accepting as this wonderful mother of yours” He Xiaohui says, “the fact that he did not object to your relationship with him is already half the battle won, no?”
At that, her Xiaobao brightens, if only a little.
“Right,” He says, puffing up once more with his usual determination, “he'll come around eventually.”
“There's my son,” He Xiaohui smiles encouragingly.
Thinking that was the end of the discussion, He Xiaohui makes for the stack of paperwork once more, only to stop at the sight of her son fidgeting with his jade tassel, seemingly lost in thought.
She pulls the papers towards her, resolved to wait again for her son to approach her.
“Mother, you…don't dislike A-Fei and Li Lianhua, right?” That causes her brush to pause, smearing the paper. She would have to draft out her response again later.
“Why, finally seeking my approval after housing them in my manor for two weeks?”
“No,” Xiaobao hastily denies, flushing, “did I not ask for your approval before that already?”
“And if I disapproved of them, what would you do? Run away with them again?” She is pretty sure that her son had forgotten all about parental approval in his haste to ensure Li Lianhua’s continued survival back then, but that was valid, so she would let it slide.
“No…” Xiaobao says hesitantly, playing his cards more carefully now. “I would always respect your judgement, of course!”
“Says the one who snuck out to take the Baichuan Court examination for five years in a row!” He Xiaohui scoffed, returning to her now ink-blotched, half-dried reply to Sect leader Jiang.
She startles when Xiaobao clasps his palms over hers, forcing her to look at her son’s earnest face.
“Mother, you do know that I value your opinion more than anyone else's, right?”
(If anyone asked, He Xiaohui would vehemently deny that this moment has her nearly in tears, her son asking for her approval in his choice of partners.
She would not admit it, but one of her worries had been that Xiaobao would soon grow up and out of her care, would no longer have any regard for them once he had his fill of the jianghu).
“Of course, you brat,” He Xiaohui says, sliding a hand free to ruffle his hair, “you've managed to pick good people to be with, must have learnt that from me.”

thanks for tagging me @astaldis !
i am, as of rereading the relevant part of blood of elves and spending literal hours doing rewrites because i finally managed to put my finger on what it wasn’t quite working, finally making forward progress on the yendelion fic! (just have to finish writing the sex. yes, this is where i thought i was when i set my writing goals for the week but i know what the sex is supposed to achieve now so i mean it this time.)
snippet:
“I’m in your debt and you’re responsible for me,” Dandelion said, easily looping back to earlier in their conversation. “I suppose that’s the purpose of the Law of Surprise—to tie this sort of mess up with a neat bow.”
“Perhaps. Should I claim it?”
“I don’t mind—being in your debt, that is—as much as I would have thought. I can’t imagine I have much you would want, surprise or otherwise. And,” Dandelion’s expression shifted from serious to impish in a blink, “if you used the traditional formalism, you might be left waiting a very long time for me to return home.”
“You shouldn’t show your hand like that.”
Dandelion shrugged. “You’ve always had the advantage, I don’t suspect it matters much.”
Yennefer studied him with a frown. “Regardless, I accept your earlier offer. You may repay me in song. It is what your life is worth.”
“Others might take that as an insult, my lady, but song is my life’s purpose.”
tagging: @whoslaurapalmer @gellavonhamster (i have your one piece fic open in a tab waiting for me to read the comics or be in the specific fey mood where one can read fic that they know basically nothing about the source material) and anyone else who wants to play :)

Imposter as Maya Fey, Ultimate Spirit Medium
I spent the past hour watching Maya's parts of the Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney playthroughs and taking notes about her back-and-forths with Mia and Phoenix.
(Danganronpa 2 spoilers, if you're coming here from the Ace Attorney fandom)
It's pretty funny that writing this character has me thinking about Twogami's character, how they act as Byakuya (but not really because Byakuya's a selfish prick lol), and then think about how Maya acts, and finally how Imposter would act as Maya but in the same situation. Maya is known for being jokey and silly, but that's usually in the investigation scenarios with hours of walking around or waiting for something. She has a fierce side to her when things get serious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's neat to rewatch this as an adult. I remembered more than I expected I would about it.
It's also neat to think about how Ibuki played this game too.

Made a new boy and I’m instantly soooooo normal about him 🥰
D&D wise he’s a barbarian bc I wanna get into playing one so badly 🥺 But he’s for the ultimate homebrew setting: established original content wow!!!!!! He’s a sweet, affable guy that’s always ready to lend a helping hand. He also smells a bit like dog, which is probably normal and fine!! (^_>^)
I did say I’d ramble more about my OCs here on this blog so… more details on this guy below the cut!!!
Faolàn is actually a Shifter!! He's a Werewolf Lite™. His grandfather, Tanner, was part of a hunting group that accidentally killed a fey guardian. Tanner took the guardian's place to make amends, taking the form of a stag.
In his time as a guardian, he met a Wistan soldier, Corina, that sought refuge in the woods. He offered her help and directions to civilization, but she returned to speak with him more. They struck up a friendship and quickly fell in love, staying in the woods together so Tanner could fulfill his duty.
Faolàn has since inherited the fey magic his grandfather carries, and the physique of his Wistan grandmother! He takes on the characteristics of a wolf when fighting or hunting, though he's not under the effects of full lycanthropy. Still susceptible to silver, though ;)
As a person, though, Faolàn is sweet by nature and eager to befriend everyone! He can be a bit of a pushover when it comes to himself, but he's protective of others and always happy to use his stature to chase off vultures. He tends to see the best in people and wants to live an easy-going life.
He's always a bit dusty but he carries lavender and chamomile on him to stay fresh and ward off bugs. Also makes good tea in a pinch :)
He's a bit of a himbo, for fun. Tall, strong, cute, kind, respects women. He does it all <3
In game, he's going to be traveling with Astra, a friend's character! She's an exiled princess of her clan, ousted for using necromancy in a way that folks were not fond of there!! But Faolàn thinks she's neat :) They're cute
Lastly, his name translates to "Little Wolf" "Wolf." This was not intentionally done, but intentionally kept because I think it's extremely funny. He's my little Moon Moon LOL

What is RSDS? I know Fei Ren Zai, is RSDS a related series?
It stands for Rénshēng Dàshì, or Lighting Up the Stars! It's a film about a little girl named Wu Xiaowen (who's heavily Li Nezha coded) who loses her beloved grandmother and, since the rest of her family don't care about her, eventually gets foisted onto the fresh-out-of-prison mortician Mo Sanmei (who's heavily Sun Wukong coded) and his friends. They clash a lot at first but spoiler alert do form a really lovely daughter-father bond that legit made me cry. For me it was particularly neat to see the "angry destructive child" aspect of Li Nezha being utilized for Wu Xiaowen to show how it's actually completely understandable for kids to throw tantrums and act out when no adult will give them the love they need or take the time to explain things, especially things like the death of a family member. And Mo Sanmei definitely stands no contest as the best cringefail loser Sun Wukong out there on account of the plot pulling no punches to show what a legitimately shitty and pretty pathetic guy he was BUT also showing his gradual and sincere change into a kind and caring man, including all the the hard work he put into making the lives of those he loves a little bit better.
You can watch it for free on Youtube here!

A couple months ago I decided to watch the whole HIStory series. I had already seen Trapped (more than once) and I watched Love in the Future as it aired, so I picked up the rest in order from series 1-4. Here's my teeny tiny review of each one, in order of least favorite to favorite.
A note: overall this series is drastically unconcerned with whether its relationships are "healthy" or "unproblematic." I'm not bothered by that, and in fact some of my favorites are... well, you'll see. Definitely recommend looking for content warnings before starting any of these - I'm also happy to answer questions about content as long as they're not "how could you enjoy media that features XYZ".
Onto the reviews! There will be a few spoilers, but only things I think viewers are genuinely better off knowing before they start.
HIStory 1: Stay Away From Me
Brief premise: after their parents' marriage, Feng He gets a new roommate in his stepbrother Cheng Qing, who's a big star. It's all too much for Feng He's fujoshi best friend to handle. I quite enjoy a good stepbrothers setup, but this one fell pretty flat, and I hated the fujoshi friend situation. Shipper characters are on thin ice for me in general, and this one was so intrusive that it ruined the other things I might have enjoyed. I did like the leads pretty well - I have a soft spot for bratty characters who are secretly under a lot of strain - but the relationship development was just so-so.
HIStory 5: Love in the Future
There were parts of this I really liked, mostly the side couple, but it was sooo tedious. It's this low on the list because the ratio of "minutes I enjoyed" to "minutes I resent giving away" is so abysmal... at least the H1 installments come in at barely over an hour each, so I don't feel like I wasted so much time on the ones I didn't like. This show is trying to do at least three different genres and doing none of them well. I don't even know how to sum up the premise... there's a guy who's gotten zapped 20 years into the future by mistake, but more of the show deals with business drama and eventual corporate espionage at the department store where the other main characters are centered. There's so much going on and none of it quite coheres. I'm too bored and annoyed to talk about it any more.
HIStory 1: Obsessed
This gets top out of the three I really didn't like, because it had the most id candy. And, again, because it's short. The setup is neat: a guy who's just gotten his heart broken gets zapped back into his younger self and tries, unsuccessfully, not to get with the same guy again. The love interest is just incredibly pushy and aggressive, sometimes in a way that's bad!hot and sometimes in a way that's just bad. I also hated the reveal at the end - there was no reason for him not to explain himself immediately instead of watching his lover's heart break, and I have no patience for that kind of thing.
Those were the three I didn't really like. Now we're going from liked to loved.
HIStory 1: My Hero
This one was a big surprise to me... I would have skipped it entirely if I wasn't on a completionist project, because the premise "girl dies, gets put into a boy's body, and has to try and win over her boyfriend" is incredibly unappealing to me. But they took it in a direction I wasn't expecting and I found myself having a great time. It couldn't have sustained itself for any longer, but with an under-90-minute runtime it's a fun little story.
HIStory 2: Right or Wrong
Enjoyed this one a lot - I love a nanny romance in theory, but I'm picky about kids in media. This kid is both charming and realistically childlike, and one of the leads does plenty of yelling about the kid's initial bad home situation, so I don't have to. The basic setup is that Fei Shengzhe discovers that his professor's 8 year old daughter is being neglected, gets hired to take care of her, shakes his professor/boss into being responsible, and of course eventually falls in love.
I liked most of the relationship dynamics - when there's a big structural power differential, I like to see it balanced in-story by their personalities or other factors, and this show did that well, but there were still moments where I wanted to yell not at school! or transfer out of his class ftlog! Overall, still positive, and I'll probably rewatch it when I'm in the mood for some nicely layered domestic romance.
HIStory 2: Crossing the Line
I am not a sports person but I loved these sports boys very much. A new transfer student gets strong-armed into joining the school's volleyball team, ends up pursuing the team's previous ace, who's permanently unable to play due to an injury.
Xia Yuhao thinks he's sooo bad until he discovers a burning need to be bossed around and I love that in a man. Qiu Zixuan won my heart immediately and kept it - he's so sensible and focused and stoic, and the moments where he struggles against the reality of his injury hit so hard in contrast. This one had me hooked from beginning to end. And the side couple is exactly what I mean when I say I enjoy a good stepbrothers setup - the established intimacy and tenderness juxtaposed with confusion and guilt makes a tasty tasty emotional cocktail.
The final three shows are why this post has been sitting in drafts for a couple weeks. I've been undecided on how to rank them, and I've been processing a ton of thoughts about the two new-to-me ones. I'll try to stay brief here, and keep my longer thoughts for possible future posts.
As for ranking - I simply can't. I love all three very much, so let's just say they sit together at the top spot.
HIStory 4: Close to You
I'm fascinated by stories that take some basic messy yaoi tropes and peel them back, really dig into the layers of what's going on and how they affect people, all while keeping it fun and horny. Love in the Air does that with consent (masterfully, as I will argue until I'm blue in the face), and Close to You does it with the boundaries of intimacy, the extent to which we're required to draw rigid lines around types of intimacy and what happens when those lines get smudged.
I do understand why a lot of people simply do not fuck with this show. There very much are multiple sexual assaults, including between one of the main pairs. And while the other stepbrother romances in this series do what they can to lean away from the incest angle, this one leans hard into it. A lot of the show operates on the level of farce - it's doing absolutely outrageous things with a straight face. If you can have a sense of humor about the things it's playing with, there are some sublimely funny moments. But I don't fault anyone for saying "nope, that's not for me."
Teng Muren and Xiao Licheng, the best-friends-to-lovers, are one of my favorite couples from the whole HIStory franchise, and the only thing better than their intricate and frenetic dance around each other was Ye Xingsi watching with his fond, weary, experienced-gay gaze. Also I am obsessed with the way people just come out and say shit in this story. Nobody keeps a secret for more than half an episode, even when they really probably should. Plots are so often driven by people not telling each other everything, and watching this one run instead on everyone telling each other way too much was fascinating.
HIStory 3: Trapped
I can't possibly rank this one in relation to the others because I watched it long ago and I've seen it several times. It's been high on my list of beloved BLs since I first watched. Meng Shaofei is one of my all-time favorites, he's so stubborn and loving and honest. I love how hard he and Tang Yi fight for each other once they get together. I love when guys get lost in the woods handcuffed together, I love Tang Yi's sexy bffs and weaponized makeouts, I love the angst and hurt/comfort and yelling crying fights between two people who love each other. I don't feel the need to say much more: it's the most popular of the series, and rightly so.
HIStory 3: Make Our Days Count
I think I watched MODC in the best possible way: knowing the ending, and in 2023 when there are so many good happy-ending BLs I can't possibly watch them all. Had I watched it when it aired and been hit with the ending out of the blue, I think I'd have been as devastated and lastingly bitter as a lot of people who did.
I really do think viewers are better going into this one spoiled, so in case you don't know: one of the leads dies abruptly at the end of the penultimate episode (not onscreen), and the final episode is the surviving partner processing grief many years later.
The presence of grief - past, future, or potential - grounds a love story for me like nothing else quite does. Without the ending, I would like MODC very very much but I wouldn't love it quite as fervently as I do. The final episode is complicated and difficult - we see Xiang Haoting at a moment when his grief over Yu Xigu is rearing up due to a time of transition in his life. We see him let go of some of the ways he's been coping in the past, we see him fall into a dangerously low state and then come back out of it, but we don't see him get over it and move on. That's because you don't get over some losses, you don't move on - they sit beside you for the rest of your life, and you learn how to be happy but never entirely how to not be sad.
The other thing I love most about MODC is how extremely Boys the boys are. The leads don't look the age they're supposed to be, but they act it. No other BL I've seen has done so well at capturing this type of teenage boy, bursting at the seams with hormones and the fiery need to DO things. They lose control and do the dumbest shit even though they know better, and they're also overwhelmingly thoughtful and caring just when you least expect it. The way Xiang Haoting sometimes just moves because his body can't be still; the way the whole friend group teases and derides but also rallies around each other with fierce devotion. Haoting's reaction when his friend comes out to him is perfect - a minute of teasing and incredulity, then an immediate pivot to "I've got your back."
The contrast between youthful, hopeful energy and adult experiences of pain and loss makes the key axis the whole show rotates around. The side couple has a big age gap, with high schooler Sun Boxiang pursuing Liu Zhigang, a wounded and weary gym hottie of about 30. Yu Xigu is the same age as Boxiang and Haoting, but he already knows grief. Haoting and Boxiang with their fearless optimism beat like waves against the walls of these sadder, warier love interests until they each decide to dare to try for happiness. In the one story, Haoting ends up inheriting his lover's sorrow, and it will take some other, future connection to get him to try for happiness again. In the other, Boxiang's persistence not only brings romantic happiness to Zhigang, but eventually heals another loss that Zhigang had given up on ever seeing restored.
There's a moment during his pursuit of Zhigang when Boxiang swears he'll love him forever, and Zhigang says no, you can't promise that, no one can. Which is always what I want to say to the BL schoolboys, because I too am older, wounded and weary. You can't promise forever, no matter how badly you want to. All you can do is love each other well for as long as you can, and know that life is long, and joy follows sorrow follows joy.

flash of light! were in the remains of a village, burnt down. abandoned. overgrown. teya's hometown. lovely. 1 house still standing but in poor shape. oh boy. wheatley takes teyas hand she needs support. following teya inside.
the inside is rotted and moldy eww. toys on the floor. teya says we should split up but cmon teya we dont wanna leave you alone xD wheatley is staying with her. senna sticks with parsley. looking around. need to find hints to the portal. senna follows parsley cause he decides to fuck off into the woods?
android just wanders into one of the rooms and theres a bunkbed all broken and rotted stuff. zen finds a photo of teya and tori. teya enters a room and begins tearing it up. wheatley just watches her. parsley is looking for the portal with senna. looking for specific signs like mushroom circles. dont see anything yet tho.
teya checks under the bed. lots of bugs under there eww. she sees a box! she grabs it and the sagging part of the bed is stuck on it ewww. its silver. its pretty locked. teya tries to slam the dagger through the lockhole. wheatley says theres better ways to do this. he starts lockpicking. he got it! teya says wheatley can keep the box. theres a rolled up scroll inside. she opens it and its all in sylvain and has her moms signature. she cant read it lol. wheatley puts the box in his token.
teya messages parsley she found the pact but cant read it lol. he starts heading back and lets senna know. android and zen finish so they go to another room. wheatley messages zen and says they found something neat, a weird paper! zen messages teya asking if shes ok cause mildew lol. androids in sunnies old room its boring lol. teya goes outside. bots follow.
zen gives teya the picture. he also shows senna lol. teya tosses parsley the pact. he blinks and rereads it lol. before he can speak he hears an etherial voice call out 'yes read that private thing outloud' its coming from behind teya! wheatley tries to punch it but it goes through. a wispy firbolg. teya looks pale. its her mom ewww. shes such a bitch why is she here. tori and sunnie didnt want the feywilds so she 'rushed'. teyas just like bye. parsley says shes stuck here cause of the pact. teya just keeps walking away so we follow. parsley says her plan was to bring her kids to the feywilds and get assigned roles but it doesnt say what roles. parsley threatens to kill us if any of us sign a fey pact.
ghost mom still following us, fuck off. teya tells her to fuck off lol. she just wants to see teya off, weirdo fuck off. now shes trying to justify herself to wheatley cuts her off and ignores her. parsley says its not specific in the pact which is the worst kind of deal. wow shes so stupid please make fun of her we want you guys too. wheatley keeps interrupting her based. teya teaches SP that shes a bitch lol. senna says wheatley could silver his weapon. he shows it to parsley but holds it away from him cause silver.
android says teya is fucked up cause of her mom, sigh thanks. teya says she didnt raise her lol. senna tries to ask her wtf she was protecting them even from its a small village. oh no shes trying something. she fucking possesses wheatley?! senna tells zen to call robotgod. zen cracks his knuckles and here comes god and they grab wheatley! oh hes mad forcibly connects. the bitch screams good! wheatley is ok! SP asks if bitch gone yes!
wheatley hugs robotgod, he dealt with her. teya asks where she went. shes contained in a soul jar lol. teya walks off to get something? oh. shes getting her families bones. ok then. gonna help her i suppose. just using your families and neighbors. senna holds onto any extra skeletons for teya. robotgod asks teya if she wants her mom in the jar lol. senna says teya should give her to spingledorf xD yippee! robotgod says teya could benefit from the jar tho. can use her as a source of power? wheatley takes her for a second and shakes the jar lol. god says the equipment might explode so i dunno.
back to pact talk. parsley says her soul cant move on until her deal is done so uh never. wheatley asks parsley to read the pact. in exchange to protecting the kids from any and all threats through the use of warlock spells they will be sent to the feywilds for unnamed roles. in the event of her death the kids must be collected by someone from the fey and taken care of until taken to the feywilds. bitch cant pass on since it wasnt fulfilled lol. jar is soundproof lol.
robotgod brings out a device to stick the jar in. dont overuse it, its a prototype. like a backpack. short rest time 2 hours! during the rest they come up with a plan. if we take teya shes gonna be stuck there together. parsley says we COULD leave her behind. wheatley says yeah we could kill the archfey like no? have teya become a warlock so her patron and the archfey duke it out? teya cmon dont go into the portal, stay HERE. please. maybe it doesnt count on teya cause she died? only in the feywilds fuck. no one collected them. maybe tori did something? they had wards on the house and parsley asks what kind. they disappeared after tori left. bizarre set of circumstances. android agrees with senna that teya should stay. shes just gonna be a hinderance. teya rolls her eyes and stands up. she walks away using hidden step, great.
following her rustling through the grass. she fucking flies away jesus. zen pulls out his token to follow her. senna throws her hands up "fine whatever" and walks away. parsley keeps re-reading the pact. senna watches him. teya asks if shes mad, senna says no shes just worried. teya wants to discuss her relationship with senna. she loved smierc. now senna. she didnt know him. not knowing her hurts too. omg she broke up with her. ladies, sennas single and depressed!
"If...that would make you happy, Teya." she finishes her drowning story. her brother tried to drown her at the age of 4. she survived cause her sister rescued her. he wound up dying somehow, she doesnt remember. she was then named heir and uh had to fight for her own survival every day after that. she chooses teya with every fiber of her being, having so much taken away from her at such a young age. one step at a time. (shes duuuuumped help her)
anyway on to parsley! he has no idea how to help fuck. uhh i made a joke in the chat so uh break up real not a break cool cool. putting her back in the box
parsley is so upset he cant figure out the contract cause its so shitty and open ended. he knows who the contractee is lol. ITS HIS MOM WTF. teya might actually be parsleys pet. anything ELSE we should know parsley? his moms an archfey so like what is he? crown prince?! parsley outranks senna this is hilarious. cant he just ask his mom to get rid of the contract? not a chance. what if parsley took teya's name? maybe. but he might count as a reprensentive but also teya was raised by her siblings. hmm. grasping at straws is what the fey do best! technically teya is a clone so ya know. we shouldnt bring the jar cause the bitch is in it but ya know.
first, find the portal. change teya's name. we trust you parsley. he got her name and can now transform into her xD Zedalia Wyntris is her new name cool. parsley can say teya's name tho xD push come to shove we have a silver box. parsley says take off that jewerly senna please. wheatley and SP have silver inside them. that should be fine. senna sighs and takes the jewerly off. shes trusting parsley. android comments about fey not liking silver oh no. just something to remember. in and out, super fast. might even take no time cause feywilds time is weird.
now to find the portal! teya ran the other direction of the portal when fleeing, so going that way. zen can find it i guess. teya might get to meet living relatives cool. senna says they might run into her friend ribbon, a pixie who was her friend and seamstress. found the portal! no idea how long parsley has been gone. hes been here 60 years but that means nothing in the feywilds. into the portal!

Mandela Catalog x Dungeons and Dragons AU
Why??? Because my brainrot never sleeps.
D&D I am still kiiinda hyperfixated on, and of course y’all know the same is very true for The Mandela Catalog.
Lemme know if y’all want any more of this. I’ve already started to sketch designs.
So I’ve been thinking: what if the story was set in a D&D universe?
The Alternates are actually an elite group of Changelings sent from the Feywild, by Gabriel, a high-ranking Fey (who sealed away and disguised himself as a high-ranking Celestial who oversaw it) that wants the main plane of the world to fall to its knees, and become basically a new Feywild. I switched up some races (as in human or something else, I mean) but kept them humanoid and roughly human-sized.
This all began when I started making classes for the main cast:
Mark: Fighter (Battlemaster, a more modern setting would be Gunslinger) / Barbarian (Zealot), Half-Elf. I think he comes from a tough family as far as all that training goes.
Cesar: Fighter (Psi Knight) / Cleric (Knowledge), Aasimar. Don’t wanna talk much about the alt one tbh, though I do have ideas for him. This dude is just clever, nice, and not to be trifled with.
Adam: Blood Hunter (Mutant) / Warlock (Celestial, but could also be fiend), Changeling (believes he is a Tiefling, and looks as such). I did not choose Tiefling to demonize here, we don’t do that around these parts. On the contrary, Tieflings are my favorite race, and I like their misunderstood history and feel it fits Adam wonderfully.
Jonah: Rogue (Arcane Trickster), high elf. Because hehe stoner but also just The Vibes. Was thinking of making him a Tiefling too, but decided not to.
Sarah: Monk (Long Death) / Paladin (Vengeance), Half-Elf. Let her be POWERFUL, dangit. Imo she already is in canon. Her and her brother tag team really well.
Evelin: Druid (Dreams), Eladrin Elf. I thought it would be interesting that her Druidic power is connected to the Feywild, referencing how she was influenced by Adam in-series. Idk why she gives me Druid vibes. I think she’d mostly take her autumn form, possibly winter.
Dave: Sorcerer (Divine Soul), Half-Elf. Going off the idea that he’s related to Mark and Sarah. Just because I think that it would be neat to upgrade him to have more of a metaphysical kind of skillset given that this horror ain’t so analog, but he’s also a Normal Dude caught up in bullcrap. …the audience for this AU, I’m pretty sure, consists mainly of me and my friend Bel. Wah.
Ruth: Paladin (Ancients) / Rogue (Swashbuckler), Air or Fire Genasi. Not sure what kind. I just know she’s neat, tbh. NO WAIT I FORGOR, AASIMAR! CUZ GUARDIAN ANGEL. And I know there isn’t much confirmed about her in-universe, but I think these classings fit her. Charismatic and crafty when she has to be, but doing all she does for the greater good.
Thatcher: Rogue (Phantom) / Paladin (Watchers), Shifter. I do think Thatcher is so entrenched in the stuff that he’s up against that he’d need to be a bit like it to stand tall as long as he has, and I feel like making him a shifter is perfect for that.
