If hiphop clubs in NYC didn't become extinct due to gentrification, they'd be dying a natural death now. Think about it, we don't listen to music the same way anymore, and no new artist has the same pull or reach as they would have twenty years ago. We're exposed to so many great artists now it's like none of them really get to be put on like that. Ever since 15 Minutes of Fame became 15 Seconds and the culture surrounding the music (hip-hop & RnB radio stations, hip-hop fashion, camping out for album releases, listening parties, hip-hop CLUBS, music video releases being a huge event, and hip-hop news being relegated to a handful of sources like magazines and dedicated shows and segments like Rap City, 108 and park, Yo MTV raps etc.) Was basically murdered due to a lethal combination of the internet spreading news much faster than print or even TV, the music becoming more and more easily accessible and thus leading to albums and EPs being treated like one-time listens forcing artists to crank out work at a breakneck pace (I remember not to long ago that 2 months was NOT a long wait for a new album), and music executives realizing that white suburban teenagers liked hiphop just as much as Black people and they were willing to pay through the nose for things like fave artist's brand of cell phones and stunna shades it was over. Think about it like this, 20 years ago 30 years ago, you could imagine Outkast playing the Super Bowl. But could you imagine Earthgang? Thundercat? How about grouptherapy.? Can you imagine a Rapsody concert that can pull Lauryn Hill numbers? These are all very talented artists but there's this shift in hip-hop now that it somewhat left its core base behind. I don't wanna call it a death, but I feel like it's def a rebirth. We're living through the age of the last hiphop stars I think. There are always gonna be rappers with pop or mainstream appeal, but I think we're done seeing Missy Elliot levels of hiphop's influence on the mainstream.
