Pairing: Poe Dameron x Finn

Word Count: 1.6k

Rating: Teen and up. Nothing explicit (BUT MY BLOG IS 18+)

Warnings: Mention that Poe has nightmares/bad dreams, implied burnout, other than that pretty fluffy. 🥰

Summary: The war is over, but the cleanup will take years. What's the next adventure for Finn and Poe?

A/N: This is the first time I've tried writing a non-reader-insert fic, but after a suggestion from the wonderful @arandomnerdsblog578 I just had to give this a try. I hope you like it, friend, since all the credit for this should absolutely go to you! 💖 Asks are always open for suggestions and whenever folks wanna drop in! 💖🥰

After years of war and conditioning for the fight, the still of peace made Poe antsy. He was constantly waking up in the middle of the night, covered in sweat and chest heaving from nightmares and dreams of battles that were long over. In those moments, Finn would gently soothe Poe’s fears with muted words and gentle kisses. It was always the reminder Poe needed that he was here, now, with someone who not only sympathized but understood what it was like in his head. It was hard to let the ghosts linger when Finn’s strong hands were there to shoo them away.

They weren’t the only ones scarred by the war that had ravaged the Galaxy. Everywhere they went, helping Rey rebuild cities and towns and return balance where they could, the signs of loss were strong. Elegant buildings reduced to rubble, holes in star maps where entire planets used to be, and children with empty eyes staring up at them under the protection of older siblings and cousins and other kids with no families of their own; the world resting on their small shoulders far too early. None of them could stomach the sight of these horrors, but they used the churning in their stomachs as motivation to help as many as they could.

One morning on whatever planet they were all on this week (they all run together after a while), Poe comes from the cockpit on the Falcon and leans against the back of the couch where Finn sits, staring at the Dejarik board. “Scootch,” the pilot says after a moment, rousing Finn from his thoughts.

“Sorry,” Finn mutters, sliding down the seat and making room for Poe.

“Got something on your mind?”

Finn shakes his head, “Always, but nothing new.” He looks up at Poe, exhaustion etched across his normally stoic face. “Are we really making a difference?”

“Of course we are.” Poe rests a hand on Finn’s shoulder before slowly grazing his touch down his arm. His eyes soften as he interlaces his fingers with Finn’s. “It may not seem like it now with all the moving and jumping from place to place, but you’ve seen the look on peoples’ faces when we show up!” He smiles and winks roguishly, “We’re heroes.”

Finn laughs softly and squeezes Poe’s hand before letting go and running a hand over his face with a sigh. “I guess you’re right. We just always have to leave before we can see how things play out.”

“We’ll start seeing it,” Poe leans over and kisses Finn on the cheek before climbing out of the booth, “You just gotta keep holding out hope.”

A decision is made along the tour of the Outer Rim to make a stop on Yavin-4, Poe’s homeworld. The excitement is palpable as Poe tells Finn and Rey stories about his childhood.

“It was wild,” he says to the crew, everyone gathered in the cockpit as he prepares to drop out of hyperspace, “Until you’ve had to run from a pack of Stentaril while swinging from tree to tree in the jungle, you haven’t fully experienced Yavin-4.”

“I think I’ll be fine with the tourist experience,” Rey laughs from the co-pilot’s chair, Finn joining along behind them.

“Fine, your loss!” Poe grins, flipping a couple of switches. “Alright, dropping out of hyperspace in 3, 2, 1…”

The streaks of white and blue slam into place as stars and Yavin-4 materialize in front of them. Huge swaths of green cover the planet, deep blue oceans surrounding continents covered in lush jungles. Poe navigates the Falcon into the designated landing pad and the crew prepares themselves for the greeting party that accompanies every new town.

Rooms are allocated for everyone after a day of helping rebuild, clearing space for new facilities, and general spirit-lifiting. Finn falls into bed almost immediately before Poe gently encourages him to actually get into his pyjamas and drink at least one glass of water after the strains of the day.

“I know, I know,” Poe urges the sleepy general, “We can get in bed right after but you gotta take care of yourself.”

With a reluctant goan, Finn takes the glass and drains it, handing it back and flopping onto the bed. “There, you happy?”

“Very,” Poe smiles and changes into his own sleep clothes before climbing in after Finn. Wrapping him in his arms, Poe rubs delicate circles into the knot that seems to be ever present in Finn’s shoulder. “You did great today.”

“Thanks…” Finn’s voice trails off. “Poe, did you see that little girl at the school? The one with the braids?”

Poe nods, “She was a sweetheart.”

“Both her parents died in the last First Order raid here.”

Sad silence washes over both of them, BB-8 chirping quietly across the room.

“Yeah, buddy,” Poe mutters, “She’s alone.”

After a heartbeat, Finn whispers, “She doesn’t have to be…”

“What do you mean?” Poe pulls away just far enough to look down into Finn’s deep eyes.

“What if… What if we took her in? She has no family, and there’s something about her… I think she might be Force Sensitive like me.”

Poe pulls Finn closer, placing a kiss or two to the top of his head. “Kids need stability, Finn, we don’t really have that right now.”

“But neither does she. Not really. She told me this is the 6th family she’s been placed with this year. She settles down for long enough to be pulled away or rehomed, we could give her that family.” Finn pulls away and sits up, looking down at Poe laid out beside him. “I didn’t know what family was until you and Rey came along. I can’t imagine denying someone who is as lost as I was this kind of love.”

Finn cups Poe’s jaw and Poe’s eyes drift shut, savoring the contact. He opens his eyes again and meets Finn’s gaze. “This is what you want?” “Yes,” Finn replies immediately. Poe can see the fire lighting in Finn’s eyes and the sight lifts something Poe didn’t realize was weighing on him. It had been months since he’d seen that look of determination on the face of the man he loves so much.

“Okay.”

“Really?” Finn’s voice has an edge of surprise. “I thought I’d have to do more convincing.”

“I mean, if you had something specific in mind,” Poe teases, eyebrows wiggling up at Finn.

Finn laughs, pinching Poe’s chin before pulling his hand away. “Calm down, flyboy.”

Nipping at Finn’s fingers as they leave his skin, Poe says, “We’ll have to talk to Rey and Chewy first-”

BB-8 pipes up, rolling over to the edge of the bed and beeping wildly. Both the men laugh heartily. “You didn’t let me finish, BB-8, I had to save the best for last. What do you think, buddy? Should we add another misfit to our group?”

Wiggling and beeping excitedly, the droid spins around the room. “Looks like we’ve got at least one yes,” Finn laughs. Joy radiates off of him in a way that lights something warm in Poe’s chest.

“Let’s talk to the others in the morning and then we’ll go talk to the person coordinating the girl’s care. What was her name, again?”

“Tala.”

One year later, Poe sits in the cockpit of the Millenium Flacon. A little girl with braids sits on his lap. “Alright, so this switch right here is to start up the electrical portions of the ship. These two right here,” he points to another set of twin switches, “they prime the engines. We can’t start her up cold, learned that one the hard way.”

Tala giggles and points to a glowing button on the far side of the console, “What’s this one do, Papa?”

“That one is for the auto pilot, for when Papa need a break and Daddy doesn’t feel like flying.”

“So the ship can fly itself?”

“Yeah, good job! Although we don’t use it much, it’s a little buggy since my stint at lightspeed skipping.”

On silent feet, Finn pads up the hall and hovers just outside the open door to the cockpit. A smile tugs at his lips as he listens to Poe teach Tala about the ship.

“How do you know all of this stuff?” Tala asks, voice full of awe.

“I’ve been flying since I was younger than you, little one.” Poe kisses the top of Tala’s head. “My mom taught me.”

“What was she like?” Tala asks. Finn’s heart breaks at the innocent question and he leans around the corner to see how Poe responds.

“She was so cool,” Poe says. “She was a pilot like me, and fought for the Republic a long time ago. She was brave, and smart, and very witty. She died when I was young.”

“I’m sorry, Papa,” Tala turns and hugs him tight. He returns the embrace and they sit like that for a moment before Tala pulls away. “Can I be a pilot like you and your mommy?”

“You’d be an amazing pilot, baby.” Finn reveals himself and sits next to his family in the co-pilot chair. “You might have to get a little bigger first, though.”

“Hey, I’m big enough!” Tala pouts, crossing her arms across her little chest. “I can reach all the buttons and the controls and…” She turns back to Poe and whispers something in his ear.

“Levers, baby.”

“And I can reach the levers,” she finishes proudly.

Poe and Finn laugh and Poe tickles Tala with the end of one of her braids. “That’s true, but you have a lot to learn, first.”

“And we’ve got time to teach it all to you,” Finn adds, standing and leaning over to kiss the top of Tala’s head.

Poe locks eyes with Finn as he does, “Yeah, we do.”

So I’m revisiting FinnPoe fics on ao3 and I’ve been once again struck by a) how much I love no.1 Stormpilot fan Oscar Isaac and b) how cheesed I am that Disney wimped out on giving us the queer ship we deserved (tho little shout out to Commander D’Acy 🥰🥰). I feel like I’m just cheesed because the sequels follow the plot line/tropes of the original trilogy in so many ways but then don’t give us this… like if you are not going to be original, at least be consistent. Like ok, a few things that are the same from the originals:

- a trio made up of a sullen Jedi, a cocky pilot, and a force-sensitive (future) general

- dramatic scene where one sees themselves in sith form (a dream) - Luke sees his face under Darth Daddy’s helmet and Rey sees sith hottie version of herself

- first ep. - loss of mentor/father figure at hands of “villain”

- it was palpatine all along🎶

Sorry I’m blanking, I haven’t watched the movies in a bit. But essentially the vibes between Rey, Finn and Poe are just so reminiscent of Luke, Leia and Han and it KILLS ME

- like Finn, like Leia, is buddies with both Rey/Luke and Poe/Han, meanwhile those two have some weird jealousy going on (reminiscent of Endor anyone?)

- Rey and Finn are like family… no they aren’t twins but like living embodiment of found family trope

Erg, this feels have fledged out because it’s been too long since I’ve seen the movies but watch me come back and edit this as I reimerse myself in the fandom.

But conclusion, Disney ur mean, Oscar Isaac, u are a sexy fucker and I have issues.

I found your take in the height difference discourse interesting, mainly because I agree, but also because the exact opposite is also true (at least in my experience).

I get the ick a lot of the time Cody is portrayed as the short one in the relationship, mostly due to the connotations that come with being the short one as people have detailed many times before. It’s the exact same problem with Obi Wan being the short one, as in that they’re woobified or even viewed as the submissive one in the relationship or even as the ‘woman’ (and I can’t even begin to get into how many layers of fucked up that is) but what also happens with Cody is it feels a lot more exploitative and sinister than it does with Obi Wan. The difference in their ranks is an interesting thing to explore when it comes to them, but the problem comes when younger or less experienced writers end up portraying them with a power imbalance.

Would canon Obi Wan ever take advantage of anyone, especially in that way? Of course not. But that doesn’t stop some writers. It just feels a lot grosser when Cody is the one being babied, at least to me. Especially since a lot of these people go out of their way to make Obi Wan bigger and more powerful than Cody.

To be clear: you are absolutely right, but I just wanted to throw my two cents in. I think any portrayal of a ship has the capacity to be problematic, we just need to be careful we don’t resort to relying on stereotypes or overused tropes that come with shipping dynamics. Cody or Obi Wan being noticeably taller isn’t inherently bad, but the internal biases of the writer are what could potentially make them that way. All rational people know height has absolutely nothing to do with any of this, and it’s strange that we’re gotten to the point where this inevitably ends up being a problem in every single fandom.

Yeah, I can see how that would be a problem. I've never encountered a fan work where Cody is a smol uwu bean, but that could get pretty weird for different reasons. Codywan is a ship I enjoy for the devotion and fluffiness and old married couple/coworkers vibes, so I tend to avoid fic that specifically revolves around the power imbalance or the age difference, which is likely why I've never encountered this.

I have encountered clone fics where the chronological ages and "sheltered" upbringing (for lack of a better adjective) is leaned into HARD, which can give me the ick if they're portrayed as sexy or appealing rather than tragic or an obstacle to romance. Maybe the ultra smol Cody trend is an extension of that?

And yeah, not all exaggerated size differences are problematic. Some of the clones have canonically turned out extremely large due to cloning mishaps, like Wrecker. Often it's just because the writer or artist thinks it's cute. I've read some very interesting fics that lean into the sci-fi body horror aspect of cloning and even how being genetically engineered to be extremely large can be an obstacle to the clones being seen as anything other than weapons. Sometimes fics can discuss epigenetic factors to explain height alterations, which is very plausible because Jango didn't always get adequate nutrition and rest growing up and the clones were all standardized and specifically made to be at his physical peak.

But the fact that these trends keep happening in this fandom makes them worth examining and dissecting. For example, I remember a lot of stormpilot discourse about why Finn was so often depicted as significantly larger and more muscular than uwu smol Poe, when that's not what John Boyega and Oscar Isaac look like. I've even read some Han/Lando fics that did the same thing to Lando, even though you could just write Skyrissian or Solorgana or Lando/Leia or Skysolo if you want a big size difference in your ship. Considering the star wars fandom's history of racism, I think that it's worth examining why it's so often characters of color that this happens to.

#and before anyone gets mad again I'm not calling anyone a bad person if they read or write this kind of thing #I'm just expressing why i personally sometimes think it's uncomfortable #anonymous #and I'm not saying you're bad for liking power differentials or age gaps either #in fact i think power differentials are very interesting to write about!#you just have to be careful about how you write it and clarify ahead of time if you're purposefully writing it as transgressive/unhealthy

I'm late as always but finally did it! Thank you @glorious-blackout 🥰🥰 I don't often appreciate my own fics because they're all relatively short oneshots and not epic masterpieces like so many wonderful writers on here, but it's all about self-love!

FYI: Fics are linked in the titles if you fancy a read 😁

1. Charlie and Dee: Quarantine Duo

"Frank kicked you out, didn't he?"

"Frank kicked me out."

AKA: Life with Dee and Charlie when they 'bubbled' together in 2020.

I'm really proud of this fic as it's the longest I've personally written (7k is not much, but for my standards it was a NOVEL) but also something I just really enjoyed digging into. I had great fun looking into the minds of Charlie and Dee and also writing in a bit of comedy and smut as well!! I'm not going to get into chardee discourse too much here but I wanted to really treat it delicately since while I personally decided to go against canon, others may not, so I wanted to make sure that we still knew that they weren't perfect people, while still wanting to root for them as well. I genuinely think that Charlie and Dee could thrive away from the gang (as they did in Misses The Boat!)

2. The Element Of Surprise

Miles gets Alex a gift of something once lost.

I loved writing this fic. It only took me a couple of days to write too(which also by my standards is a win)! I just love dipping into this alternate world where Alex and Miles are together. I also miss Alex's death ramps ring, someone SHOULD get him a replacement!

3. Hell Is Round The Corner

Finn patches up Poe's blaster wound, and emotions are running high in the lead up to the battle of Exegol. Set during The Rise of Skywalker.

Oof. Poe and Finn in the leadup to battle? Unspoken feelings? Someone fixing up the others injuries? Sign me up (hence why I wrote this lmao)! This one was very fun but also challenging to write as I really wanted it to fit within the plot of the movie and story, almost like a deleted scene which I felt should (and could) be part of the movie, adding that little sprinkle of Stormpilot it needed. I quite enjoyed writing a bit of angst too!

4. All We Are

Murdoc and 2D fall asleep watching telly, and Murdoc contemplates their relationship when he wakes up with him in his arms.

More angst? Hell yeah. This, for reasons I do not know, is my most popular fic with the most hits, which surprises me but I'm not complaining! I enjoyed looking into 2D and Murdoc as characters and their dynamic together and the potential of their ship (and why they should NEVER be together). Being a Gorillaz fan has a great perk of having brilliant lore to play with. I do still one day want to write my 2D and Ace fanfic but have yet to think of a plot🤷🏻‍♀️

5. Not Safe for Comms

Poe's been away on a long mission. Finn gets in touch. (...literally)

Ah yes, more smut. I forgot about this fic! I generally avoid re-reading my own smut coz #cringe but I remember how I really wanted to get across the sexual tension between Poe and Finn but also the tension of their separation and the reason for it.

I should. I try to. I used to. I rarely do.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

eh I usually don't write super angsty endings. I guess the Specs/Tucker one is pretty dreary since I abandoned it at a little cliffhanger.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

excluding orgasms, Despite the Snow, Despite the Falling Snow is my only genuine angst with a happy ending. and it's a pretty cute get-together.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

no, my fics aren't popular or controversial enough for that

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yep. Usually kinky stuff, and often stuff I myself find sort of weird. Gotta exorcise it i guess.

Funny enough, I used to write a fair bit of smut as a teen, deleted it all and spent years not writing any, and then it's been naught but smut since 2021.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

no, I don't enjoy reading them either.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

No.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

I'm pretty certain Despite the Snow, etc. was translated into Chinese back when I first posted it but ao3 doesn't show any related works. Maybe it got deleted?

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Nope!

14. What's your all-time favorite ship?

I'm pretty fickle so I usually just stick to my favs in my current fandom. Right now it's CMJF with Joepunk contesting it for #1. My Stormpilot shipping would rear back up with every new Star Wars release so it was probably my longest-lasting ship.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

My Punk/AJ/Ace Steel fill for kinktober was supposed to be part of a longer fic that never got farther into than the very beginning and that extract I posted.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I feel like I'm pretty good at showing characters' feelings through action, without much internal monologue. I've been told I balance comedy and smut well which. I don't consider myself a funny person but I do like to lean into the absurdist premises of porn i guess

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Visual description. Partially because I'm bad at it, partially because I think it adds too much fluff and avoid it. Problem is I have a very visual imagination so fics that feel super detailed in my mind end up being 200 words long with no plot, because it's all just mise-en-scène that I can't get on the page.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I've never really done it but I tend to enjoy when it's there. It may be cheesy but I love a good pet name in the character's native language.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

I dabbled a bit in Phantom of the Opera fic, but really got going in the Hannibal fandom.

20. Favorite fic you've written?

around 2017 I was really trying to make my fics feel ~atmospheric~ and I feel like I achieved that best in Despite the Snow, etc., even if it's partially adapting a scene from the book that never made it to the show (that I know of, I didn't watch past s1). I feel like I'm still plopping around awkwardly in wrestling fic so I really couldn't pick a favourite.
