Never gonna give you up 5+1
I don't think I ever posted this fanfic here, so I'm here to fix that.
1.
Never was too soon for a repeat of tonight’s experience, Derek decided as he braced himself against the sharp corner. The wheels of the Jeep skidded on the gravel, making the back of the car slide out. There was no need for them to drive this fast, not anymore. Leftover adrenaline made for a heavy foot on the gas, apparently. The engine whined as they cut free of the forest, trading gravel for blacktop. Gradually they reduced speed, until they were driving at a pace well within the limits.
“Think you can hit play for me, big guy?” Stiles asked in an upbeat tone. “Without getting blood all over my iPod, if you can.”
The look Derek sent him was cutting, but Stiles was long since immune for any angry stare he received from the werewolf. With all his energy going into healing, Derek decided it wasn’t worth it to get into it with Stiles over something so small. He pressed his left hand against the flap of skin that was only loosely covering his ribs on his right side and reached out with his free hand to the battered iPod crammed into the hole that used to house the radio of the Jeep. The radio was one of the car parts that fell victim to the crash with the Kanima and with some help of Boyd Stiles had hooked up his iPod directly to the car’s speakers.
The Alpha werewolf didn’t bother to check what playlist it was, he just hit the large button in the middle and settled back into his seat, gritting his teeth against the pain the movement caused.
The sounds of an eighties synthesizer filled the car, drums coming in alternately from the left and right speaker, immediately followed by a peal of laughter from the car’s owner. Derek bit through the agony and pushed forward again, cutting off the music abruptly just when the lyrics started. Stiles didn’t say anything, though it took a minute before he stopped chuckling quietly.
When they got to the loft, Stiles followed him inside, although Derek hadn’t asked him to. He hadn’t told him not to either, which was probably why the teen did it. Not that Stiles bothered with doing what people told him to, not when it came to Derek. The boy was pack in all the ways that counted, except for heeding his Alpha’s commands.
Derek let himself fall on the threadbare couch, still holding his skin more or less in the right place to knit itself together again. Behind him, Stiles rummaged around in the kitchen, emerging a little while later with two bottles of water and a couple of energy bars. He dropped the food and one of the bottles on the couch next to the werewolf, easily within reach. Then he sat down on the armrest furthest from Derek, twisting the cap of his own bottle and gulping the contents down eagerly. The werewolf watched the boy’s Adams apple bop with each swallow, his eyes catching on the long line of his throat.
Stiles wiped his mouth and looked down at Derek, intelligent eyes roaming over the werewolf’s bloodied torso. “You going to be okay?” he asked, not really sounding like he needed an answer, so Derek didn’t give him one. “Thought so,” the boy confirmed anyway, and patted Derek’s shin twice as he got up. “I’m gonna give Roscoe a wash. I think there are bits of skin stuck to the passenger seat. Gross!”
2.
“Gonna have to walk a little slower, big guy,” Stiles complained, sounding a little winded as he picked his way through the undergrowth a few paces behind Derek. He grunted dismissively, though he held his step a little anyway.
Derek might have wondered why he was always the one stuck with Stiles on a stake out, if the math wasn’t so easy. Being human, the boy was the weakest of the pack, physically speaking at least. And with Derek as Alpha and therefore strongest, it was only logical that they paired up. Besides, it wasn’t like Derek had his pick of people to go on stakeout with tonight. There wasn’t a clear threat, this was just Derek acting on a hunch. ‘Being paranoid’, Scott had said. ‘I’m not messing up my nails in the woods tonight’, was Erica’s reaction. Boyd had only told him to call when there was trouble. Derek was fully prepared to go alone tonight. It was his idea after all and he was pretty sure he could handle whatever he would encounter. Yet Stiles hadn’t let him. He didn’t offer to tag along, he just did.
When asked, the werewolf would say he hated being alone with Stiles. The boy was never not moving and only silent when sleeping. Scratch that, even asleep Stiles wasn’t silent. He was a source of constant movement, night or day, always in the periphery of Derek’s attention. It was impossible not to watch Stiles, even more so when they were alone.
Walking through the woods at night and trying to keep a low profile was also pretty much impossible with Stiles, a fact proved when Derek grabbed the boy’s elbow not for the first time that night to keep him upright. If it were up to him, he would’ve gladly let him faceplant in the leaves, but they were making enough noise as it was already.
“Do you think you could be any louder?” he hissed, shoving Stiles along the path.
“Do you think you could be any rougher?” Stiles threw back in a low voice, rubbing his hand over where Derek had grabbed his arm. He wouldn’t bruise, Derek hadn’t grabbed him that hard; chances were he was just sour about missing out on game night with Scott. He’d heard them talking about it yesterday, Stiles lamenting about him and Scott needing a boy’s night with pizza, energy drinks and playing video games in their underwear. Derek didn’t understand why Stiles would choose a night in the woods with him over that.
“Now what?” Stiles stopped at the ridge, looking out into the forest on the hill below them.
“Now we wait,” Derek answered, dropping down into a crouch and tugging the boy down with him. Stiles fell to his butt with a grunt, but pulled his legs under him a moment later, jostling Derek’s shoulder when he came up to his knees.
“You see anything?” Derek didn’t answer that, nor the next question: “Hear anything?”
Stiles rolled his eyes at the werewolf’s lack of communication and then shrugged his backpack off. He pulled the bag in front of him and opened up the zipper. At first Derek ignored the apple that was presented to him, but Stiles only shook it in emphasis until he took it.
For a few minutes, Stiles was as quiet as he ever got. Which meant that the sounds of him chewing on his own apple mixed in with the sounds of the forest.
When the humming started, Derek shut him up at first. It helped for a few minutes, but not long. Because the wind was in their favour, Derek gave up on shushing Stiles: it was easier to just tune him out and concentrate on the sounds that reached him from the forest.
It took a good while before the words showed up in his mind. Bits and pieces of song lyrics just floating around his brain, easy to ignore. It wasn’t until he caught himself starting to hum the same tune that he rounded on the boy next to him. “Damn it, Stiles!”
Stiles simply laughed softly. “It’s quite the earworm, isn’t it?”
3.
“Give me a second, I’m just gonna… Yeah, I’ve got it all right here,” Stiles said through the phone, clicking around on his computer. “Whole list of it, actually. I’ll send you an email right now.”
Derek hung up the phone and grabbed the laptop from the coffee table. It was a refurbished laptop that Stiles had made him buy a few weeks ago, claiming that ‘no self-respectable Alpha in the twenty first century could go without, especially if they don’t want to say goodbye to their frigging flip phone’.
The mockery of his phone by his pack was getting old. The device maybe wasn’t as up to date as the other phones, but it held up in a fight and that was something Derek valued more over the use of the latest social media apps. However, contrary to popular belief, Derek wasn’t completely unaware of pop culture, which was why he immediately recognised the video for what it was.
It was hidden in the list of websites Stiles sent him. Derek was working his way through the links one by one, working up a steady appreciation of Stiles' research skills, when his laptop suddenly started playing music after he clicked the fourth link on the list.
He almost called Stiles to tell him off, but settled for aggressively closing down the browser window.
The other links were all normal, providing him with the information he asked for and then some.
4.
“You want anything, hon?” The waitress directed the question to Scott, who placed his order of a large breakfast spread with an equally large smile. She wasn’t placated by it and Derek resigned himself to giving her an extra big tip for putting up with his raucous pack on her early morning shift.
“I’m so hungry, I could eat a horse,” Stiles said to the table at large, patting his stomach.
“Should’ve ordered something else than bacon then,” Isaac deadpanned from across from him.
Stiles smiled impishly. “My love for bacon is strong, I can’t help it.”
“Can you make bacon from horses?” Scott wondered out loud and that set off a whole discussion about the consummation of horse meat.
Derek let it all wash over him, leaning back in his chair. His pack was fine, all were whole, or whole again at least. Isaac was wearing a track shirt that Stiles had lying in the back of his Jeep, replacing his own shirt that was ripped to pieces. There was blood on his jeans still, Derek could smell it from across the table, but it wasn’t visible against the dark fabric and the wounds were all healed. Erica sported a similar situation, also with mostly invisible bloodstains on her dark clothes, as did Boyd. The blood wasn’t all theirs. Normally, Derek would have told them to go home, wash up, but this Denny’s was closer and growling stomachs had won over the urge to get cleaned up. Or rather, Stiles had strongarmed him into buying his pack breakfast, saying that it was good for bonding and empty stomachs alike.
Not bothering to get in on the conversation, Derek let his eyes glide over his pack members, ensuring himself once again that everyone was in one piece. He got stuck on Stiles, distracted by the way his T-shirt pulled taut when he moved his arms behind his back to stretch. Derek hadn’t seen the article of clothing before, it had been hidden underneath a grey striped hoodie; he guessed that was ruined too. It was a black T-shirt with a jumble of letters and symbols on the front. It looked like computer code, or something equally confusing. Undoubtedly it was some pop culture reference, or a bad pun. He didn’t care enough to ask for the meaning of it, yet his eyes kept returning to the text on the shirt, even after their food arrived.
He recognised a word in the top line from the abbreviations the pack used in their text messages; sometimes it was as if they were allergic to vowels. The letters ‘nvr’ probably spelled never. And below that, was the word ‘annog’, which could be a made up word or it was simply ‘gonna’ spelled backwards. Then it said ‘forgive’, subtract four, and on the bottom something with ‘me’, ‘you’ and ‘splitting soup’. It was complete nonsense, that’s what it was.
Eventually, Stiles caught him looking. “You like the shirt, big guy?” He took a bite of a strip of bacon, cocking his head as he waited for Derek to answer.
“It’s ridiculous. It doesn’t even make sense.”
Stiles grinned. “Sure it does. You just have to figure it out.”
Next to him, Boyd took a look at Stiles’ shirt and scoffed. “Isn’t that joke ancient by now?”
“Classics never go out of style,” Stiles argued, pointing the strip of bacon at Derek’s second. “Besides, I like it. It’s got meaning.”
“Like your stripper mom’s T-shirt?” Erica asked snidely. “Because that one’s just rubbish.”
“Nah,” Stiles smirked and then he winked at Derek. “This one has a better roll to it, doesn’t it, oh Alpha mine?”
It clicked for Derek in that moment and he let out a long suffering sigh. “I should rip your throat out…”
“With your teeth, I know,” Stiles finished for him, happily munching on another strip of bacon.
5.
Up until now Derek had always thought that brownies were something to eat, not annoying little creatures to kill. Or, well, that’s not exactly true. He knew they were mythical creatures, but he’d thought they were just that. Mythical, not real. And how bad could they be if they ended up being real? Pretty damn annoying, it turned out. They didn’t look like much, but they had razor sharp teeth and equally sharp nails that cut through clothes and skin like miniature knives through butter. And like a wolf pack, their strength was in numbers. However, he refused to lose to something small and annoying, so, in the end, the wolf pack won.
Derek looked around at his pack, who were panting and bloody, but otherwise okay. Erica was frantically raking her fingers through her hair, cursing angrily at the loose hairs she brushed out with it. “Those fuckers cut a chunk of my hair!”
Boyd diligently looked at the problem area, declaring it wasn’t so bad. Erica huffed in disdain. “No offence, honey, but you haven’t got a hair on your head. What the hell do you pretend to know about it?”
She turned to the other available girl, Allison, and let the hunter fuss over her hair. Derek was long past the point of wondering how the hell that happened. His pack included a hunter, a banshee and a former kamina, he'd learned to not question it anymore.
He patted his pockets, routinely checking for his car keys. Those he found, though they threatened to fall through a tear in his jeans any minute. He came up short when feeling around for his phone. The pocket on that side was cut clean through, empty of its contents. Derek rumbled in annoyance, getting a quick inquiring glance from Boyd.
"Lost my phone," he explained quickly, already stalking back to the area where he'd been for most of the fight. It was where Stiles was sitting, sagged out against a tree and scrolling through something on his phone. The boy was holding the cuff of his sleeve pressed gingerly against a small cut above his lip, otherwise he seemed fine and Derek didn't have to worry about him.
Sniffing out his phone turned out to be harder than he thought. The ground was covered in quickly disintegrating brownie bodies and while he could appreciate the lack of clean up they would have to do, the smell of decay and blood covered up the other smells in the area.
Derek planted his hands on his hips with a huff, scanning the forest floor around him. His phone was black and pretty small: it could be anywhere. He glanced at the smartphone in Stiles' hand, with its shiny firetruck red cover. Obnoxious and flashy as it was, it would be pretty easy to find.
"What's up, big guy?" Stiles asked from his spot by the tree. "Looking for something?"
"Dropped my phone," Derek sighed, already making plans in his head to drop by the mall in the next town over to get a new phone. He wondered if they still sold flip phones.
"Oh wait, I'll call you so we can hear it ring," Stiles said, clambering to his feet and moving his fingers over his touch screen.
Sure enough, moments later there was a song playing, a few meters to his left. "That's not my ringtone," Derek said sharply, his eyebrows climbing up to his hairline when he recognised the song.
“It is when I call,” Stiles answered gleefully, watching as Derek went off in the direction of the sound. The warm baritone of the singer was cut off when the werewolf bent down to retrieve his phone, buried half underneath a dead brownie. He wiped it on his jeans and then flipped it open.
“Hey, what are you doing?” Stiles called out.
“Figuring out how to delete this ringtone,” Derek bit out, tapping the keys forcefully.
“Hey, no, why would you do that?” Stiles ambled closer and for a moment Derek forgot to tune out his scent. It was a habit that his mother had taught him when he was young; with their keen sense of smell and hearing there was little privacy in a pack: it was common courtesy to try and tune the others out as much as possible in normal, day to day interactions. Derek did it with his own pack too, as much out of self-preservation as in consideration of their privacy. His pack consisted of teenagers, they were generally a whirlwind of strong emotions and unwarranted arousal. He would get whiplash if he’d be able to scent it all. Right now, Stiles smelled of disappointment and vague embarrassment.
Derek frowned. “Because it’s a cheesy song. A joke.”
The smell of embarrassment got a little stronger. “It’s our thing,” Stiles said with a shrug that wasn’t as casual as he probably hoped. “It’s our song, sourwolf” he tacked on with a smirk, also a bit strained.
“It’s a love song,” Derek said slowly, puzzled, his fingers stilling on the phone keys. It wasn’t like he knew how to change the ringtone anyway. Before now he didn’t even know you could add personalised ringtones to a caller.
“Yeah, well…” Stiles cleared his throat and scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. He was also getting quite red in the face, yet still Derek couldn’t look away from him. “It’s the sentiment that counts.”
“The sentiment,” Derek repeated, still confused by the situation.
“The sentiment, you know, the message? The idea the song conveys?”
“I know what sentiment means, Stiles,” he said, more gently than he usually was with the teen. “But still… a love song.”
“I know that,” said Stiles, still with red cheeks. “And I know that we,” he gestured with his hand between them, “are not… that.”
Derek pressed down on the sudden urge to ask what exactly they were, if not that.
“I just think that, it’s just,” Stiles floundered and then he shrugged somewhat defeated. “It’s something that you need to hear, every now and then.” A silence fell between them, one loaded with something Derek couldn’t quite figure out. Not yet.
Stiles took a deep breath and held out his hand. “Give me that, I’ll change it back to your normal, boring ringtone.”
Derek shook his head and put his phone in his jacket pocket, a pocket that was still in one piece. With a nudge to Stiles' shoulder he started to walk away, towards the spot where they parked their cars. Stiles followed him, smelling content and happy, with his lips pressed together to hide a smile.

Derek hadn’t known he had a first aid kit in his bathroom. Yet there it was, neatly tucked away in the cabinet underneath the sink. The rectangle box felt heavy, like it was stuffed full with all kinds of items a self-healing werewolf would never need.
“Why do I have this?” Derek asked as he walked back into the room, knowing for sure he never bought it, so someone else had to. Someone named Stiles, probably.
“Because you have humans in your pack,” Stiles answered from the sofa, making grabby hands at the kit before Derek was even close enough. He took the box, putting it in his lap and opening it immediately. “There should be ice packs in the fridge,” Stiles directed without looking up.
And indeed there were. Derek grabbed two and a towel, making his way back to Stiles. He carefully sat down by the foot that the boy had put up on the sofa. His sneaker was already off, but he still had his sock on. The werewolf carefully placed the ice packs on both sides of Stiles’ swollen ankle, wrapping them in place with the towel.
Meanwhile, Stiles was wrapping his arm up. It was his lower left arm, making it not too hard for him to do himself; the bandage was a little wonky, but it’d do for now. It was just a large scrape anyway, the bandage was mostly to keep the wound clean.
That left the cut on his eyebrow. Derek watched Stiles feeling around the cut with his fingers of his one hand, while holding a butterfly bandage with his other. It wouldn’t work, but he waited until Stiles grimaced and locked eyes with him, a crooked, bloody butterfly bandage still in hand.
Derek leaned forward and picked a clean bandage from the kit. “This one, right?”
Stiles nodded and kept his eyes on Derek when he scooted closer until he was seated next to the boy’s hip. The cut was already cleaned and disinfected, all that was left was to place the bandage. Maybe two, Derek thought, as he eyed the cut critically. Stiles had said it wasn’t deep enough to warrant stitches and he’d gotten hurt often enough to know, Derek presumed. It didn’t sit easy with him, though. He didn’t like to see his pack get hurt, especially the humans because they didn’t heal as quickly as the werewolves did. And, he didn’t like seeing Stiles get hurt.
Derek carefully placed the butterfly bandage across the cut. Stiles smelled of blood and pain, though the boy assured him the latter was mostly from his ankle. Spraining an ankle hurt, Derek knew from experience, even though for him the pain was always short lived. Stiles closed his eyes as Derek put a second bandage in place and covered them with a larger bandaid. “There, that should do it.”
“Thanks,” Stiles said softly as Derek put everything back in the kit and quickly tidied away the mess.
“Want to watch a movie?” The question came somewhat unexpected for Stiles, yet he smiled and nodded quickly. Derek tossed him the remote so he could select a movie from the streaming services the boy had set up himself a while back and went into the kitchen to grab them something to drink.
When he came back Stiles had a superhero movie lined up, one that Derek hadn’t seen yet but he knew Stiles had. He pulled the coffee table closer to the sofa so Stiles could reach his drink and then sat down, carefully placing Stiles' injured foot in his lap. The boy’s heartbeat ticked up and his cheeks coloured red, yet he didn’t say anything. Derek nodded for him to press play on the movie and gently eased his hand a little ways up Stiles’ pant leg, just above the ice packs, to make skin contact and leach away his pain.
“Thanks for coming back,” Stiles said quietly over the sounds of the opening scene. “And taking care of me.”
Derek glanced at him, at the way Stiles held his eyes glued to the tv screen to avoid looking at him directly. He waited a beat for Stiles to take a sip of his soda. “That goes without saying, Stiles,” he emphasised then. “I wasn’t gonna run around and desert you.”
Stiles made a choking sound and sprayed his drink everywhere. Derek kept his foot in place while the boy flailed and laughed, wiping the soda from his face with his sleeve. “Damn it, Derek! It came out of my nose!”

the world shifted, just a little bit.
stiles and y/n found themselves spending a lot more time together. granted, that time was often under the sheets, in a locked car, or- just once- in the locker room after a game. nonetheless, the skin on skin contact always led to conversations, conversations that were deepening in content. they were getting to know each other, forming an attachment both swore would never even exist.
as the time passed, they each found solace in one another, a comfort, a sort of destressor that neither was able to substitute with anyone or anything else. neither were aware of this, but it was as present as the air.
y/n's parents were always out of town, and, while she didn’t have any doubts that they loved and supported her, they were absentee. they missed out on the everyday moments in her life. so, she was usually all by herself through it all. sure, danny came over every once and while, but there were still those periods of time where she was left, literally in the middle of nowhere, all alone. stiles was a warm body to sit next to, an attentive ear to listen to her troubles or woes, without judgement or expectations. he was just there. whenever she needed or wanted.
and, for stiles, y/n was just a human being. she didn't have claws, fangs, premonitions about his friends' deaths, or any other intense, supernatural features. this fact he was positive of since he’d had both scott and derek invade and smell her locker to ensure she was really a living, breathing, human girl.
with all he had to deal with, every single day, he was grateful to get to act like a normal teenage boy some days out of the week. laughing instead of fighting for his life, watching movies instead of drawing up investigation boards.
today was one of those bad days, for the both of them. a bad day where they just needed each other.
the number of killings in beacon hills was rising, rapidly, day by grueling day. and there wasn’t much stiles could do to help. he could ramble, on and on, about the mindless theories rattling around inside his head. he could tag along to random warehouses and parking lots, only to hide away once the real conflict began.
but, he was overall useless to the entire process.
it made his shoulders a little heavier some days, to know he had no control over anything anymore. scott could take away pain, lydia could help save somebody before they died, allison could shoot down three different wolves with the same arrow.
stiles could only talk.
today was one of those days where he just felt kind of shitty about it all.
dr. deaton was missing. and there wasn’t much of anything stiles could do to help. he felt like he always just got in the way.
y/n was in a similar boat.
her parents were out of town for the third week now. they’d promised to be home this past weekend, and had talked y/n up with a week full of dinners, family outings, a visit to her school, normal things that parents normally did with their normal children. of course, they’d cancelled on her last minute because of some conference across the world. she’d asked danny to come stay for the week, but he said he couldn’t. he was going out of town with ethan.
she felt abandoned.
usually, y/n would sulk, by herself, with take out, a round of depressing movies, and homework she didn’t really feel like doing. sometimes, she’d even beg her boss to let her come in for a shift.
but, it was saturday evening, so the staffing was already full for the rest of the night.
so, she texted stiles.
y/n: pls tell me ur bored
stiles: what time?
y/n: anytime :)
stiles: omw gorgeous
“alright, i’ve got it.”
stiles plopped down onto the couch beside y/n, bowl of popcorn in left hand, a can of dr. pepper in the right. he crossed his ankles and stretched his legs onto the coffee table. y/n sat criss-cross beside him and extended part of the blanket she wore onto his lap. stiles set the bowl down atop his covered thighs.
“oh, yeah, what’s that?” he asked, taking a sip of his drink.
y/n pointed to the television, and he followed her gaze. netflix was open on the bright screen, with a movie queued up. “the first scream.”
stiles nodded appreciatively, until she added, “aka, the best slasher film of all time.”
he squinted his face and shook his head rapidly, “i cannot believe you just said that!”
y/n giggled at his expression, “don’t even argue with me right now!”
“it’s hard not to argue with someone who is so blatantly wrong!” he replied.
y/n stole the popcorn from his lap, “thats not even a good counter. at least make a decent rebuttal!”
“okay,” he peered over at her with a matter-of-fact look, “halloween is the best slasher because;” he counted each point off on his fingers, it has a cooler villain, better kill sequences, and the hottest final girl.”
y/n rolled her eyes, and shoved his shoulder with her own, “you just like it cause of jamie lee curtis’ boob scene.”
stiles pursed his lips, “they are pretty great.”
“but they didn’t need to add nudity to that movie! that’s so sexist and gross to support that idea, you pig.”
stiles stole a handful of popcorn, shoveling it into his mouth. “what can i say, im a boob guy.”
if she didn’t know him so well, she’d think stiles, in this moment, was kinda gross. but, she recognized his humor better than most. she appreciated that it was sarcasm. and, he kinda looked cute with his cheeks full of popcorn.
y/n blushed at the comment, looking down slightly, “oh, i know.” boy, did she.
he tapped the edge of the bowl, garnering her attention again, “don’t do that.”
her brows furrowed, meeting his eyes, “do what?”
“don’t be dirty. i don’t think we’ll make it through the movie if you start acting up.” as his words drifted out, stiles’ tone of voice lowered. he leaned his head closer to hers and the corner of his lips turned up in a devilish smirk.
y/n grinned in response. she grabbed the back of his neck, smashing her lips into his, drawing a sharp breath off his tongue. stiles moaned into her, barely catching the popcorn before it could spill. his other hand clutched his dr. pepper, so he didn’t have much leverage against her advances.
stiles clambered around until he found the coffee table, shoving the popcorn bowl atop it. “wait, wait, wait-“ stiles gently grabbed her biceps, tugging her off of him delicately.
y/n’s face fell instantly. she cowered away, hugging herself with her arms. she thought that was what he wanted, but now it seemed he was mad. “i’m sorry. i’m so sorry- i didn’t-“
“no, no, no,” stiles set a wary hand between them. “you didn’t do anything wrong. you’re okay, it’s okay.”
“i’m sorry,” she slouched, frowning. she relaxed a little bit, but the moment still worried her. “i thought that’s what you wanted?”
stiles shook his head and grabbed her hand, holding it between his like a prayer. “no, no- i mean- yes. i want you, i always- want you. but, i don’t- i don’t want you to feel pressured to do that all the time. i want to watch a movie with you. i like just hanging out, too. i don’t just expect sex out of you. that’s not all this is-“
stiles pressed his lips together. he always said too much.
always said too much.
y/n let out a breath she had been holding at the top of her chest. her mind raced with a thousand words she didn’t how to say.
this changed everything. the rules were blurred. the lines were crossed.
and it now seemed that, maybe, just maybe, he wanted her like she wanted him.
all she could say was, “okay.”
she didn’t want to rush things. she didn’t want to force him to label it. she didn’t want to get in over her head, throw her hopes up, and get let down again.
stiles’ worried expression fell into a gentle smile, “okay, hey, i’ll even let you think scream is the best slasher film, just for the night.”
an easy giggle fell out of her. “deal.”
stiles fixed the blanket across their laps that had fallen off slightly, while y/n tucked her legs up onto the seat, cozy against the back of the couch.
he stretched an arm across the back of her seat, inching over to her slyly. y/n bit back a smile and leaned into his side. stiles choked back a cough, a strangled attempt to clear his throat. he set his arm around her, fingers lingering over her shoulder.
the movie started.
it took them a few minutes to loosen after that moment. but, eventually, they fell back into their same routine- stiles made lame jokes, y/n nearly fell over laughing at all of them. he compared scream to halloween, calling out which parts would probably be better with a michael myers killer instead of ghost face. she argued back that he was a sore loser.
eventually, the movie was drawing to a close. the credit scene was just about to roll across the television screen when y/n’s phone started ringing from the coffee table. she jumped slightly, a little spooked from the movie, though she’d seen it a million times.
stiles tossed his head back, laughing over her fright. she shot him a dirty look as she reached for her phone. he took his arm off of her, but patted her thigh in a mocking manner. “don’t worry, i’ll protect you.”
y/n shoved his arm playfully, but her attention was drawn away by the contact showing up on her screen. ethan was calling her.
“give me a second,” she mumbled, leaving the room with confusion written all over face.
stiles watched her go, sitting forward on the couch. her distant tone worried him a moment. he pulled out his own phone, hoping for something from scott. updates, suspects, something. hoping the plague wasn’t going to reach her, too.
his screen was black.
stiles wanted to tell her about everything. maybe he should. it would explain his erratic, anxious, flakey behavior.
but, telling her would bring her into it.
and he didn’t know how well he could protect her.
so, the secret was just his for now.
stiles opened scott’s contact, ready to give him a quick call, just in case, when y/n reentered the room. “hey, everything okay?” he barely glanced up at her, but had to do a double take when he noticed how she looked.
y/n was shaking, visibly, clutching her phone in her right hand, which was still held up near her ear as though she was about to answer the phone again. a few tears escaped her eyes, and her pupils were dilated with fear and sadness.
“y/n?” stiles stood up, slowly, tone rattled.
had his troubles finally plagued her, too? was the one sacred, peaceful thing he had finally tainted by the cruelty of his reality? a million worried, terrified thoughts sped through his mind.
y/n met his eye, “danny’s in the hospital. he-he almost died. hi-his l-lung collapsed.”
stiles moved quickly. he carefully took her by the waist, guided her into a pair of shoes, into his jeep. he stayed attentive to her the entire car ride. he played her taylor swift, nearly sat at a 180° angle while he drove, kept a firm hand on her thigh, and spoke to her in a soothing tone. y/n was nearly mute. she didn’t know what to say or what to do. she was just too stunned.
it was always shocking to discover that death could just come knocking on the door whenever it felt like it.
when they finally reached the hospital, stiles opened the car door for her. she grabbed onto his hand, following him into the building.
no one was allowed to visit with danny, at least not until the morning. unfortunately, his parents were out of town, like y/n’s, and couldn’t get back until monday. so y/n and ethan were all danny had until then.
“so, he’s gonna be okay?” stiles scratched the back of his neck nervously, knee bouncing.
y/n sat beside him in a waiting room chair, clutching his other hand till her knuckles were white. they stared up at melissa, awaiting her answer.
melissa returned their stare them with a kind smile, “he’s gonna be just fine. we’re gonna keep him overnight, just to monitor him. but, he’ll be alright.”
y/n took a deep breath. her head fell back against the wall, eyes squeezing shut in relief. melissa nodded once, reassuring them again, before turning to leave. she squeezed stiles’ shoulder as she went.
stiles turned his body to y/n, taking her hand in both of his. she finally met his eye. he was glad to see hers, the storm within them more weathered now, calmer like the water right after a wave. he smiled slightly.
“hey,” he whispered.
y/n finally smiled back. “hey. i’m…sorry if i freaked you out. i don’t do well with near-death experiences. i’m kind of a pussy.”
she laughed at herself, head dropping down in shane. stiles disagreed quickly, “no, no, hey,” he pushed the hair from y/n’s cheek, cupped her face, guided her eyes back to his, “you’re not a pussy. you’re a human being. you were scared and worried for your friend. i’m not judging for how you reacted. i just want to know you’re okay.”
she nodded, “i’m okay. just- tired, now. that was overwhelming. sitting here for an hour, waiting to hear if my best friend was dead or not.”
stiles brushed his thumb over her cheek, “i know, baby, i know.”
the word slipped so easily off his tongue, that he didn’t notice. y/n did, but she wouldn’t allow herself to get bent out shape over it. there was no time for that right now.
“i’m gonna stay here with him tonight.”
stiles moved his hand back to their entwined ones, “i’ll wait with you.”
y/n shook her head in disagreement, “i can’t ask that-“
“you didn’t ask,” he interrupted her, pointedly.
y/n went to say something else when scott disrupted their moment. he came out of danny’s room, nearly appearing out of thin air. stiles could tell he was on edge.
“stiles, hey, i was just about to call you,” he said, glancing between the both of them. “sorry about danny, y/n.”
“thanks,” she smiled slightly, though she was confused. “how did you get in to see-“
“stiles,” scott pretended to not hear her, turning his attention to his friend, “we need to talk.”
stiles patted y/n’s hand gently, “i’ll be right back, okay?”
he stood to leave her, but she didn’t let go of his hand. she held on until he was too far to reach. before he followed scott down the hall, however, he turned back, shrugging off his jacket.
“i know you’re gonna need this,” he murmured, tucking it around her shoulders.
y/n watched him walk away with scott, a dazed smile on her face.
things might be working out.
stiles had to leave. at least, scott needed stiles to leave. derek, isaac, boyd, and cora were planning a trap or something of the sort, and they needed to go help them. stiles needed to go help his friends.
but he didn’t want to.
for the first time in his life, he didn’t want to help. he wanted to stay here, in the hospital, with her. he wanted to hold her hand, sleep in the uncomfortable waiting room chairs, until the second they could visit danny. until the sun shone on her beautiful face.
stiles didn’t want to stand on the sidelines while his friends blood splattered across the walls around him. he especially didn’t want to watch somebody die tonight.
but, he didn’t protest when scott ushered him out of the building.
he had to do what he always had to do. it was expected. necessary.
like a sacrifice.
y/n tucked danny’s sheets around his chin like a mother would, before standing back to look at her work, proudly.
“you’re clinically insane,” he glared at her. the eye bags drearing his face were more prominent in the lighting coming from the lamp on his bedside table. y/n frowned deeply at the sight of him, so tired, nearly lifeless before her.
“you’re my little baby,” she cooed, sitting down beside him on the bed. it took everything in her not to squeeze his cheeks.
“i am a man,” he denied her.
y/n waved him off, “whatever helps you sleep. listen-“ she stood up, collecting her phone and keys off his bedside table, “i will be right down the hall. do not even hesitate to ask me for anything. water, a hug, maybe some cuddles-“
“go to sleep. you look like a walking corpse.”
y/n felt like one. they’d just gotten home the hospital, and it was 8pm on sunday. the waiting room chair had been uncomfortable, and she had felt a little off with the absence of stiles’ warm hands and soft words. so, she didn’t sleep very well. plus, sitting beside danny’s bed all day while they ran tests just added to the tired stress she was feeling.
but, the solace of his smell on his hoodie, and his sporadic text messages, got her through it all. he checked in once an hour, every hour. his phrasing was short, though, and he didn’t reply very quickly. but, stiles was still there. he was there for her.
now, y/n felt like she was going to collapse. so, she softly shut danny’s door behind her and headed for the guest room. it was right next door. she was too scared to leave him alone, so she was going to stay until his parents got home tomorrow night. she was even skipping school to look after him. ethan was going to stop by in the morning, today, he, apparently, had been caught up with something.
she didn’t really trust him. but that was a problem for another day.
y/n slipped out of her fresh pajama bottoms to get ready for bed because it was usually pretty warm in danny’s house. though she kept stiles’ hoodie on.
that morning, at the hospital, nurse mccall had delivered y/n’s book bag, packed neatly with a few essentials, like pjs, her toothbrush, her phone charger, to danny’s room.
stiles had gone out of his way to ensure she had her things how he’d gotten into her house? she didn’t know, and she didn’t really want to question it. she was just grateful he thought of her at all.
y/n shut the light off and got comfy under the covers. just as she went to shut off her phone, a phone call came through.
stiles.
“hello?” she whispered, voice too tired to speak too loud. y/n lay her head upon the pillow, shoving the phone between her ear and it. she felt her eyes closing.
“hey.”
the sound of his voice brought her so much comfort. the exhaustion was takning over now.
“how are you doing?” was the first thing he asked.
y/n smiled, which was visible through her words as she spoke, “better now.”
“oh, yeah?” stiles teased gently. “i was just checking in. was worried about you.”
“i was worried about you,” she emphasized, “is everything okay? nurse mccall said you had to handle something.”
everything was no okay. stiles had watched derek kill boyd just hours ago. luckily, they’d saved dr. deaton, and found a few more clues that would surely lead them to the serial killer rampaging their town.
but his classmate- his friend- was dead. and he watched it all happen. he couldn’t do anything to stop it.
but, e couldn’t tell her that.
though, she noticed a shift in his voice, “yeah, just something stupid. scott was having girl problems.”
y/n didn’t believe him.
she was noticing more and more that he was always disappearing, running off to do stuff that he wouldn’t tell her about. his cover stories never made much sense, either.
the thought that he was keeping secrets from her made y/n feel wary, made her want to pull away.
but, then he’d say something like, “i’m more worried about you, baby.”
and she was easily pulled back in.
“don’t,” she murmured. her eyes fell all the way shut. she was drifting off to sleep, the sound of his voice a sweet lullaby to her ears.
stiles smiled to himself. he imagined holding her in his arms, brushing the hair from her face as he watched her fall into a beautiful slumber. it comforted him.
but, when he focused his mind again, he was back in the cold, dark animal shelter, which was barren of any good feelings like the ones he could only day dream of for now.
he thought about telling her, again. but after what happened today, he wasn’t feeling very confident about it. he really, really could not lose her.
he just couldn’t.
“you should get to sleep,” stiles spoke.
scott motioned for him. so, stiles added, “i have to get going.”
“i miss you.” y/n was half asleep, completely unconscious to any words falling off her tongue.
stiles’ smiled again. “i miss you, too. hey, i’ll come see you tomorrow, okay? maybe we can watch the next scream.”
she didn’t have the energy to respond.
“you there, y/n?”
no response.
stiles figured she was asleep. “well, since you’re not there, i guess i can say…i really like you.”
y/n heard.
and she’d never tell.
she liked him, too.
but, what secrets was he keeping from her?

Erasing Him by scarlettletterr

When Derek was 15, he thought he met his soulmate. But then, she burned his family. When Stiles was 8, he met his soulmate. But he wanted nothing to do with him.

a study on cat's behavior by peachicicle
(2/2 I 3,408 I Explicit)
“Hey Derek,” He snapped out of his trance, “Do you like cats?”
“What?” It seemed like Stiles kept catching him by surprise most of the time these days.
“Do you like cats?” Stiles said while slowly raising his hand up to the bookshelf, picked one out and inched the book out of its place, then dropped it on the floor.
Derek gawked at him, mouth dropped in silence.
Stiles kept staring at him and dropped another book, and another, and another, getting closer to the much rarer book section of the bookshelf.

Stiles goes out of his way to tell Derek that he like him.
as the skyline splits in two by dumpac
(1/1 I 6,142 I Teen)
The whole school, Stiles included, is just waiting for Scott and Derek Hale to act on their unresolved sexual tension, because of course the sweetest omega and the most handsome alpha of Beacon Hills would get together. And Stiles swears he wants to support his best friend the best he can. So what if he has a crush as big as Jupiter on Derek Hale?
Navigating This Space Between Us by Omni
(1/1 I 9,641 I Explicit)
Derek gets forced to watch some sci-fi show about a surly, secret prince and the sarcastic young spaceship captain hired to aid him on his quest. Strangely enough, he finds himself hooked on it. So much so that he's even drawn into the fandom. There he meets a popular fanfic author with an oddly endearing attitude, and he gets rather smitten. Maybe this mystery guy could actually help get him to stop pining for Stiles...
The One with the Stolen Hat by nerdfightingwhovian
(14/? I 50,964 I Explicit)
In high school, Stiles stole Derek's hat and everyone who hears the story of Stiles stealing Derek's favorite (and only) hat begins to ship it. Luckily, Stiles never found out about the ridiculous number of people who ship it. Except, one day he does and he confronts Derek about it.
That is where the story begins, the cat is out of the bag and Stiles, the curious person he is, wants to know how it started. So now, Derek has to tell him.
Except, what starts out as Derek and Stiles laughing over ridiculous stories about stolen hats and glittery campaign cards becomes something more.
Season of the Witch by gryffindor17
(22/22 I 95,013 I Explicit)
“I just want to feel whole again.” Stiles said weakly, turning his head to look searchingly to Derek. “I’ve got all this…guilt…this pain…and it feels like it’s a part of who I am now. This…constant ache. I just wish there was a way to get rid of it.”
Stiles watched as something flickered to life in Derek’s eyes, and suddenly he was off like a rocket.
*
After the Nogitsune's been killed, Stiles still finds himself haunted by what it had done with his body. Try as they might, The Pack can't seem to console their friend... That is until Stiles mentions something that jogs Derek's memory and he takes off to find a friend from the past who he thinks can salvage Stiles's mind. After all, she'd done it for him.
And if she happens to become a part of the pack while she's at it, well, no one's really complaining.

so here’s the thing. rebooting the original 1980s teen wolf film as a series worked because they weren’t trying to be the the 1980s film. the film was a silly comedy, the series was darker (both thematically and aesthetically and seriously the lighting needed serious work but i digress) and the only real connections was a teen called scott turning into a werewolf and his friend stiles, everything else about the show established it as an thing in its own right, unconnected to the film.
this teen wolf the movie as a follow up to the series didn’t work and that’s for a number of reasons.
1. it relies way to heavily on nostalgia, the amount of throw backs and hints to the series would have worked, been endearing even, if we weren’t in the age of streaming when people could go back and rewatch the series whenever the want, and if there had been a longer gap between the series and the film. season 6 ended in 2017, my first year of university, it is now 2023, i graduated in 2020. september 2017-january 2023 isn’t even 6 years, the show is still fresh for so many people, and so many people are still discovering the series that it makes the nostalgia grabs feel cheap
2. the nogitsune is an iconic teen wolf villain, season 3 is many peoples favourite season for a reason, and while a large part of that is because of dylan and his impeccable acting as void stiles, another huge part of that is the nogitsune itself, this film does not do the nogitsune justice in the slightest. it’s another nostalgia grab, the writers basically went ‘remember your favourite season and favourite villain? well we bought the villain back’ and it sucks. flip side of that, the heavy reliability on nostalgia requires fans to remember every single detail of the series to piece things together, i spent part of the film confused until i remembered something from the series and then everything made sense.
3. none of the characters seemed to mature, every single character was making mistakes they made as teenagers, and should have learnt from, while they are now in their 30s, it felt like character development wasn’t even something the writers considered and i was so annoyed
4. fan favourites were missing. sure we’ve known for a while that dylan, arden, daniel and cody weren’t returning, but stiles is the reason that so many people got into teen wolf, isaac was a fan favourite and his exit from the show, and everyone seemingly forgetting about him, was something that the fandom never excepted. kira had the fandom divided on opinions, but that was down to the writers, kira deserved a better ending, and arden deserved better than how she was treated (100% support her decision not to come back). theo again had people divided, but by the end a lot of people had warmed to him, i think having him back would have helped at least a little bit, his snark and overall attitude contrasted perfectly with the righteousness of so many of the characters
5. the writing sucked, i’m sorry but so many of the lines felt like they were written by middle ages writers for a gen z teen show and y’all know exactly what i mean by that. teen show dialogue is so uncomfortable for people in their teens and just out of their teens to hear because it’s so unrepresentative and this had the same feel. the plot also felt simultaneously rushed and also drawn out, which is a talent in its own right, but not a good one.
6. eli. listen, eli as a character is fine but his existence creates a multitude of plot holes. he’s been alive the same amount of time that allison has been dead, who is his mother? who was derek romantically involved with in season 2/3, they discuss eli as a young child, toddler age really, but it was never seen in the show, when exactly did derek find out about his son, when did this happen?
7. stydia. 6 seasons it took for them to develop stydia. 6b was weird enough with lydia being more excited over seeing jackson than her own boyfriend and then the film we find out they broke up over a potential premonition. i get that dylan not coming back probably changed things, but to have a 6 season long slow burn to end like that, it’s disappointing and honestly lazy writing.
8. bringing characters back from the dead, at this point it’s boring. teen wolf had already done that in the series, if you’re a fan of supernatural you saw it happen basically every season. bringing dead characters back to life no longer has the affect it once had on audiences
9. derek’s death. listen, the idea of derek dying isn’t a bad plot device, and at this point not enough main or key characters have died when you think about how high stakes the plot was, however the way it was done annoyed me. having him die the same way his family did, and having is son watch it happen, it was unnecessary trauma porn.
10. off the back of point 9, the allusion to sterek with the jeep analogy. i’m a sterek shipper, always been a fan of that pairing (also a stydia shipper so frankly either way the plot went i would have been happy but no one ends happily here so fuck your jeff) it’s become a thing with long running shows that have a popular queer ship among fans to allude to a one sided love in the finale/film special and then kill the character with the one sided love. this sucks on multiple levels. it’s the worst kind of fan service, if you’re going to give me queer characters then give them to me openly, i don’t want allusions or subtext, it also plays off as writers and producers realising they weren’t inclusive enough and trying to remedy it in the worst possible way.
11. allison. listen, we love allison, she’s great. she didn’t need to be resurrected but we move on. my biggest issue is, she died when she was 17, she was then resurrected 15 years later, surely that suggests that she is still 17 while everyone around her has aged by 15 years, to then bring back scallison made me slightly uncomfortable (might just be me though)
12. harris. not only do they bring someone back from the dead. but it’s a basically forgettable character, he was only around for a few episodes and it’s frustrating that there’s zero explanation as to how he’s alive, nor is there any reason for his knowledge of the nogitsune, let alone his desire to release him despite some flimsy revenge plot
13. hikari. i get that with bringing back the nogitsune they felt that they needed a kitsune and with arden (rightfully) not coming back they needed a new kitsune, but they ruined her character basically immediately. there wasn’t time in a film to introduce or get to know her, she was a plot device necessary only for the fact they were bringing the nogitsune back, and keeping scott alive.
14. continuity? season 6 ended with the pack basically running for their lives as the existence of supernatural creatures became widely known and helping other supernatural creatures find safety. the film didn’t address that, the film made out that the existence of supernatural creatures was once again not widely known. what happened in that time? the continuity issues led to so many plot holes it’ll take multiple rewatches for me to find them all and i am not putting myself through that again.
basically this film was unnecessary, it was a badly executed cash grab banking on nostalgia to bring people back. i’m a firm believer that when it’s time you should let things go, teen wolf should have ended with 6a, 6b was the worst instalment in the series and then less than 6 years later they followed with an even worse film. it honestly felt like fanfiction and not in a good way, but what’s worse is it worked, teen wolf fans (including myself) tuned in, sure mine was from morbid curiosity but i am now still a viewer, sure reviews are bad and fans are annoyed, but they’re getting views and in the entertainment industry that’s all that matters.
anyway, can streaming services and hollywood stop remaking/rebooting/making follow ups and sequels stop. so few are done well, and frankly it’s unnecessary.

7. Florist AU and 53. Mutual Pining
“I’m telling you; he only comes in here to see you!!!” Stiles glares and Derek shakes his head.
“I doubt business guy comes to the flower shop bi-weekly to just see the grumpy ass florist.”
“He does Derek; admit it.” Lydia breezes by holding out the stock designs for valentine’s day.
“If he comes in on valentine’s day; since that’s the usual time he’d come in bi-weekly.”
“It’s weird Y/N; you don’t need to go into the florist that often; he probably thinks you have a girlfriend; or boyfriend.” Kira laughs when you glare at her.
“Kira let me pine away in peace.”
“You’ll die before you say one word to him..”
“If he;s working valentine’s day I’ll say something...”
“You’re going in on Valentine’s day???” she widens her eyes at you.
“Mhm; it’s the usual day I go in after all.”

Things that strike Derek with unrelenting fondness for Stiles Part 1:
1. When Stiles gets tangled in things and needs help getting out; like his blankets, his clothes, his seatbelt, or the blinds
2. When Stiles quotes a scholarly source that doesn't come from a textbook; such as police records, medical journals, but especially great American literature
3. When Stiles looks out for his dad
4. When Stiles trips on nothing but then gets up and then pretends like nothing happened
5. When Stiles coos lovingly at his Jeep
6. When Stiles gets so excited about what he's talking about that he accidentally bites his tongue because he's talking too fast
7. When Stiles talks about how his online gaming community is doing and what they've defeated recently (refer back to number 6)
8. When Stiles takes one single bite into a doughnut and pulls away with a ring of sugar caked around his entire mouth, like a glaze beard
9. When Stiles lays on his belly to play with cats on the floor
10. When Stiles takes out another pencil because he forgot he left his first one behind his ear
11. When Stiles mouths off to other people despite being scared, especially if they're hunters
12. When Stiles has completely serious discussions with kids about which is the best dinosaur
13. When Stiles gets this really far away look while talking about his mom, as if he's there in that moment again
14. When Stiles calls Derek 'Big Guy' or 'Der'
15. When Stiles shoves too much food in his mouth all at once, making his cheeks bulge like a chipmunk, before trying to talk around his mouthful
16. Whenever Stiles wears his 'Stud Muffin' or 'I Support Single Moms'-stripper shirt
17. When Stiles defines a word very differently than how his father defines that word
18. When Stiles treats household plants like pets; petting them, naming them, calling them for 'dinner' when he waters them
19. When Stiles finishes Derek's sentences
20. When Stiles smiles for any reason

Queerbaiting vs. Fan Service
For whatever reason, I decided to take a stroll through The Falcon and The Winter Soldier tags after the second episode, and I was slightly distressed (and mostly annoyed) with how many people were labeling the interactions between Sam and Bucky as queerbaiting. You can imagine my confusion.
Now, as a gay man, nothing would please me more to see a relationship between two men in a big budget action franchise, even if it is just the MCU. Ignoring the reality that this is Disney and that they'll probably never have a gay or bisexual main character in anything, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is not the place to draw that line in the sand.
I've been on this app for about eight years now, and I can't tell you the number of times I've seen people make and reblog posts about the desire to see more men be friends with one another, to not fall victim to the toxic masculinity. How many times have you opened opened this app and seen posts about "let men cry" or "let men be intimate with each other without making it weird"? And yet, every time, almost as if on a timer, the moment two guys (either in a show or actual people) look at each other for longer than .05 seconds, a ship is born.
Now, there's nothing inherently wrong with shipping. Especially when you factor in the fact that same sex romances are severely lacking in modern media. I myself am attracted to the idea of SamBucky, because they have foundation there that if the producers decided, could be used to build a relationship off of. I did the same with Steve and Bucky in the MCU. Like I said, there's nothing wrong with shipping, but some people take it too far. In this instance, I've been seeing too many people claim "queerbaiting" because Sam rescued Bucky from falling to his death under a moving truck or because of the therapy scene where they had to face each other and get real close.
That is not queerbaiting.
For starters, it's been two episodes. The show isn't even halfway over. Not that I expect Disney to actually do something like that, but it's precisely this need to jump the gun and declare something that makes the problem worse within the fandom. And more to the point, I'm not entirely sure many of you know what the term queerbaiting actually means.
Queerbaiting is when a show or movie or whatever, sets up a relationship between two people of the same sex, has everything point in the direction of them becoming a romantic pairing, only to, at the last second, have one or both of them enter into a heterosexual relationship or be killed off.
A great example of this, and the first that pops into my mind, is The Magicians, specifically Queliot. Now, anyone who followed me, especially when the show as airing, knows I'm not the biggest fan of that ship, but in the fourth season of the show, they spent a great deal of time setting up Quentin and Eliot finding their way to each other, only for the production to kill off Quentin in the finale of the season. One could even argue that having Quentin chose Alice for a reconciliatory relationship after they did everything to set up Quentin and Eliot is another form of queerbaiting, eschewing the same-sex romance in favor of a heterosexual one.
Now, circling back to The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, what we have here is not a case of queerbaiting. Production of the show, and the MCU in general, more than likely scour Twitter and Instagram and whatever else and see the fandom reaction to certain ships/pairings, and specifically make scenes or scenarios where those two characters have to interact. That is called fan service, an entirely different animal.
A great example of fan service would be Teen Wolf. As anyone who has been following me knows, I've been talking about this topic a lot recently, thanks to one particularly persistent anon. If you've ever interacted with the Teen Wolf fandom, you know that the big ship that dominated it was Sterek, despite it being something that wasn't based at all in canon. Jeff Davis, after seeing how fans reacted to the few interactions of Derek and Stiles in season one, gave the fandom a more in season two, such as the pool scene, or when they were both paralyzed by Kanima venom in the sheriff's station, the dream sequence at the end of season three, or the ride to Mexico in season four. Hell, even the comedic sequence in the final season of Stiles "rescuing" Derek from the FBI to make it back to Beacon Hills for the final showdown was fan service. What it wasn't, was queerbaiting, because Sterek wasn't something that the show set up. It was something that the fandom set up, which more power to them, but with that being established, people still got mad because the show didn't go the way they (the fandom) decided it should have gone.
This same thing happened with Stucky. The idea of Bucky and Steve was appealing. If either one of them had been a woman in the MCU then their relationship would have very easily been interpreted in canon as romantic, but as it stands, that's not the case. They were just two very close friends.
Brining it back to my original point, we have Sambucky, and no matter how much fandom kicks and screams and demands, it won't happen in the show. It's alright to ship them, because I do see the appeal, but at the end of the day, too many people are getting upset about something that fandom made up and that canon doesn't deliver on, despite the two being unaffiliated. You want to ship Sam and Bucky, I fully support you in that endeavor. I myself like the idea of it, and often tag posts as such, but calling it queerbaiting in an attempt to shame people for not supporting it is misleading.
Bottom line: queerbaiting is a very specific thing and there are actual shows out there that are perpetrators of it. Please try and actually understand what queerbaiting is before you simply throw the term out at every inconvenience.

Queerbaiting and Buddie
(word count: 1,900)
I keep saying that I don’t want to spend any more time on 9-1-1 meta or fic, but the events of this weekend made me open up a document where I had some unfinished meta and in light of the S4 finale airing tonight, I thought I might at least write this:
“Queerbaiting is a marketing technique for fiction and entertainment in which creators hint at, but then do not actually depict, same-sex romance or other LGBTQ representation. They do so to attract a queer or straight ally audience with the suggestion of relationships or characters that appeal to them, while at the same time attempting to avoid alienating other consumers.”
That is how Wikipedia defines queerbaiting. And I really feel like everyone needs to read that and then read it again and realize that what is happening on 9-1-1 with Buddie is NOT queerbaiting.
I don’t want to go into the long history of queerbaiting because we would be here all day and anyone that wants to do some research should go and do so. There are a lot of resources out there. Use them.
But the short of it is this: queerbaiting has a lot more to do with the way a show is promoted, with the way that anyone involved in the show talks about a queer ship, and with the show deliberately scripting scenes that hint at a relationship without any intention of following through. Expectations and wanting a queer ship to go canon and those expectations not being met do not alone equate to it being queerbaiting.
For any of us that have been around a long time there are a lot of perfect examples and if you compare Buddie to any of them, they are very different. I’ll name a few:
Merlin/Arthur
John Watson/Sherlock
Emma Swan/Regina
Derek/Stiles
Castiel/Dean Winchester (though they did go canon...barely)
Lena/Kara
Buck and Eddie do not fit into that list. Which isn’t to say that someday they could belong there, but I just do not believe that they will even if Buddie never becomes canon. And this all lies in how Buddie as a ship has been treated both on screen and off. I’ll break it down by season.
S2:
Eddie is very clearly introduced as a new character, a straight Army veteran with a disabled kid and family drama. He and Buck have immediate chemistry. We can’t deny that, or deny that from that first episode there are immediate sparks. Unintended sparks, but sparks nevertheless. And it is easy to tell that no one on the production team expected that and the story reflects that.
Yes a foundation for their friendship is formed and yet the season long story focuses on Eddie’s relationship with his estranged wife and Buck is dealing with his own growth after being left by Abby. Their friendship shines and their scenes are great but none of them suggest romance and there are actually a lot of episodes where Buck and Eddie barely interact in S2 aside from in the background or for small work related moments (this mostly happens after Shannon returns).
S2 does give us the first acknowledgement from the powers that be aka Tim Minear that they know what the fans have seen. This is why the elf scene exists, but it exists in a space where it’s a nod to the fans and not meant to do much more than that. The other moment is during the call with the livestreamer. But S2, places them completely and without question on a strong friendship.
S3:
We see a lot more conflict for Buck and Eddie in this season and we see how close and important they are to each other. Those are the two main things. That can be read as friendship easily and it’s a season where both Buck and Eddie deal with their pasts and in one way or another start to get closure while their friendship remains intact.
Yes there are some scenes that make us squint and go huh, wtf? (I’m looking at you kitchen scene), but narratively we also know that neither of these boys is ready for a real relationship with anyone, let alone each other. But we can bask in how close they are as well as how Christopher fits in into all of it.
But in S3 we are also introduced to Ana and we see the return of Abby. We also get to see that Buck and Eddie have become closer than ever and that the lawsuit only serves to highlight the importance that they both feel about having the other available to them. I’ll also quickly mention that Eddie Begins worked hard to highlight Buck’s devotion to Eddie.
S4:
Without considering the events of the finale (I am avoiding spoilers and know nothing about it or the speculation), we’ve seen Buck and Eddie both grow and get further closure on their past. This season has paralleled them well and their friendship has not faltered, they’re as close as ever.
The beginning of the season was heavily focused on Buck and we saw him grow as a person and begin to work on himself in a healthy way and we’ve seen Eddie be supportive of that.
We also have Ana to consider and her relationship with Eddie as well as the return of Taylor and yet the appearance of these women has not changed the Buck and Eddie dynamic. And I find it fascinating that Eddie beginning to date Ana, is the thing that prompted Buck to start dating. The parallels are all over the place but it is the strength of the friendship and the way they care so deeply about each other that remains whether that becomes romantic is still to be seen, but it could still go either way.
Off-screen by the end of S2, Tim Minear had already addressed Buddie by throwing in that elf scene in a wink/nudge fashion that said “I see you” and in the scene with the girl with the livestream with the comments. During S3 he tweeted about being frustrated by the fans demanding and being hostile and thinking that that would make him more likely to do what they want (I’m paraphrasing what I remember seeing). Tim has never once said that Buddie will happen or shut the door on the ship entirely, but he did say he did not want to engage in conversation about it because he doesn’t want to get into arguments with fans.
Oliver has always been enthusiastic about Buddie and has even said that he would be perfectly fine with it happening both a while ago and more recently in promo for S4. Conscious of queerbaiting and not wanting to give fans false hope, he has specifically said that he does not know if it will or won’t happen and that he wouldn’t speak on that as he’s not the one making that decision. His support for it happening does not mean he has any sway one way or the other. He’s said this a few times and even wrote a letter to the effect to make it clear to fans that the last thing he wants is to disappoint someone due to something he’s said.
All in all, it just isn’t a constructive environment for anyone working on the show to interact with fans on this topic because any time that they do, they get attacked by overly enthusiastic buddie shippers that in many ways are making everything worse.
In all of the interviews from Tim that I’ve seen, he has always been very quick to hint at what was coming up on the show in a way that at times has been misleading on purpose. The number one thing that comes to mind is early in S4 where Buck was said to get a new woman in his life. Tim absolutely made it out to seem like it was a girlfriend while knowing fully well that it was a therapist. This is an excellent example of what promoting and hinting is actually like. No one from this show has done that in regards to Buddie.
No one has gone out of their way to hint that it may happen in a way that excites the fans. And this is one of my main reasons for knowing that Buddie is not a queerbait. At no point in the life of the show so far has anyone used Buddie in a promotional way to bring in viewers. Because THAT was the whole point of queerbaiting in the past.
It was a way that some showrunners found to bring in a lot of viewers when they needed to up their numbers in order to show networks they were worth keeping around. Someone figured out that LGBTQ people wanted to see themselves represented so much so that they would tune in to anything that promised an LGBTQ character in some fashion. It was a tactic that worked well in the landscape of tv where there was so little LGBTQ content on mainstream media that anyone wanting it would latch onto anything. And then they just wouldn’t deliver on those relationships or characters. In 2021, that is not the world we live in any longer.
In today’s tv landscape there is so much to watch and so much to pick from and diversity has grown, it is celebrated. Queer characters are well represented as are queer relationships and queer stories. The times are different. A while back I was listening to a podcast (Bait: a queerbaiting podcast) and something I found interesting was how the hosts both agreed that in today’s tv landscape there is no more real queerbait and that we won’t easily find anything like the ships I mentioned above. I think I agree more with this than I expected to, because I do think that it exists in some spaces, but it definitely isn’t what it used to be. This is a good thing.
Specific to 9-1-1, this is a show that has that diversity and that isn’t afraid of tackling that diversity and giving us interesting and nuanced perspectives and stories embracing that. We have characters of color, women in positions of power, a F/F relationship, two multi-racial relationships, a disabled character, other queer characters including a M/M relationship. There is so much in this show that embraces diversity and that embraces the reality of what the world looks like. To call it queerbait is to disrespect everything else that this show is and has done and the hard storylines that have been tackled that we would not have seen on tv ten years ago.
And I get that Buddie would be another breakthrough. It would be a novel way to tell a queer story, and it would be amazing if it were to happen. The set up is there, but it isn’t fully realized, and Buck and Eddie can still be read as just friends if we take off the shipping goggles. But it also isn’t queerbait or likely to become queerbait and people have to stop calling it that.
What Buddie resembles is one of the many unintended slow burn ships that have frustrated viewers in many forms across fandoms and we just have to go along for the ride and maybe it will happen. Or maybe it won’t. But if we know anything about relationships on tv, it is that a lot of the fun comes from the journey, even if the destination is good too.

Halloween Event
“Stiles?” You said, shouting a little over the sound of Halloween music. Hurrying to the bathroom you shut the door so you could hear him. “Stiles, I didn’t hear what you said.”
“There is a giant man eating pumpkin on the loose and large parties seem to be attracting it. You should get out of there. My dads coming to break the party up anyway.” Stiles said quickly. You could hear Scott and Lydia talking in the background. They had been planning to meet you and Malia at the party. But they hadn’t shown up.
“Man eating pumpkin! Stiles you don’t really think I’d believe that!” You said with a light laugh. When someone knocked on the door you peeked out, seeing it was Malia you beckoned her into the bathroom with you.
“What’s going on?” Malia asked with a casual urgency that made her sound as if she was excited to leave.
“Stiles is making stuff up to scare me.” You answered. You heard Stiles splutter then say something to Scott on the other end of the phone.
“Oh, so your plan is to not take this seriously at all?” Stiles asked. You made a noise as if you were thinking about it. Until you heard screams downstairs.
“Stiles… you said a giant pumpkin?” You asked as you poked your head out of the bathroom. You could see people fleeing upstairs and towards the bathroom. You beckoned Malia out with you, only hesitating when someone you vaguely recognised grabbed at your arm and tried to stop you.
“Yes. Yes, all the eyewitnesses and the video shows a giant pumpkin.” Stiles answered quickly. You and Malia crouched so that you could see down the stairs without actually going down. You jumped when you saw an eerie face looking back at you.
“Like the pumpkin king or a serial killer in a pumpkin costume?” You whispered as Malia led you into one of the bedrooms and started looking for a window that would open.
“It’s there already?” Stiles asked quickly.
“Yes! There’s so many people here, Stiles. Ugh, it looked at me with it’s weird face!” You complained. Malia hurried over to help you move some furniture in front of the door and when you found a few people hidden in the room she decided that it would be better to just break the window and get the hell out.
“Urm… Did Stiles say anything about the friends?” Malia asked hesitantly.
“(Y/N)? What’s going on?” Stiles asked. You lowered the phone from your ear, hearing Stiles yelling at you but you couldn’t look away from what was outside.
“Is that… a real giant rabbit covered in blood or do you think it’s a costume?” You muttered to Malia, too scared to look away.
“I don’t know and I don’t care but we’re trapped and I do care about that.” Malia hissed. A soft thud on the floor made a thump on the floor made everyone jump. You realised your phone had slipped from your hand and went to grab it. There was something under the bed and you tried to be as casual as you could as you stood up.
“Well we need to get out and we’re not alone!” You whispered and gestured to the bed that was in the middle of the room. Malia frowned then glanced away from you.
“Guys!” Stiles yelled.
“Stiles? You need to get everybody here. Like just everybody. This is either murderers or a curse or something!” You whispered into the phone.
“I’m… I'm on my way. I’ll call… we’ll.” Stiles was sputtering now. He didn’t like the tone of your voice, the faint screams in the background, or that you wouldn’t tell him exactly what was happening. He followed Lydia and Scott to the Jeep and didn’t object when Scott started to drive. Lydia started calling for any help on the Jeep’s radio while Stiles started calling Derek and any other supernatural person he had the number for.
“(Y/N) and Malia are together. They can find a way out and they’ll be fine.” Lydia said firmly. No one said anything as Scott sped down the road. When a cop pulled him over he shouted about everything that had happened and the cop, glancing at Stiles who was frantically yelling down the phone at Melissa, he put in a call that recommended asking for backup from nearby towns. By the time they reached the house the street was filled with people. Covered in blood and wearing costumes. Some of them turned to look at the Jeep and Stiles shuddered.
“Look! There!” Lydia pointed to the top of the house. When he threw himself into the front of the Jeep, Stiles could just make out you, yanking people out of the window and shoving them higher up onto the roof. He caught a glimpse of Malia fighting something inside the room.
“I’ll try and get up there… Lydia, stay here in case...”  Scott started.
“In case you need someone to scream their way through a bunch of people.” Lydia said calmly. She was already on her laptop, looking through her list of ideas of what could be going on. “You know (Y/N) said cursed costumes on the phone right? Maybe they’re right?”
“You think!” Stiles yelped as he took Scott’s empty seat and started to back up as several costumed figures moved towards the Jeep. He could see blue and red lights flashing in the background, making them out on the horizon. He saw Scott climbing the side of the building and reaching you and felt a little relieved.

From Harry Potter to Twilight to any romance novels, you bet he’s read it before
The two of you argue over which Hogwarts house he would be in
“You are 100% a Hufflepuff!”

“My reasoning is that you are basically the softest person I’ve ever met, a true Hufflepuff.”
“Fine, but if anyone asks I’m a Gryffindor.”
Big nerd
He can make fun of Stiles’ nerdy comments all he wants but you know he understands every single one of them

Dates under the stars
“I think I could lay out here forever with you Isaac.”
“That sounds very tempting.”
Can’t cook to save his life
But he sure can bake
Cakes, cookies, brownies, pie, anything and everything he has made for you
“Isaac we already have 2 dozen cake pops what am I supposed to do with all these brownies! Huh?”

Wouldn’t want you to be turned unless it was absolutely necessary
“But Isaac, I could be like you! Stronger, and able to protect myself, not just some wimpy human.”
“I, for one, have taken a liking to this so called wimpy human you speak of.”
Is shy about PDA because he was never given much attention
You decide to start small with light handholding until he gets more comfortable
He’s now confident enough to lace your hands together when walking in the halls
Eventually he works himself up to kissing you in front of any number of people or pulling you to sit in his lap
Gets very flustered when you kiss him in public
“Y/n, there are people around.”
“I’m aware, and I’d like for them to know you’re here with me.”
Gets jealous easily but you would never notice until one day he explodes on the guy, needing you to calm him down and reassure him
If there is a guy flirting with you, he’s never quite sure how to show the guy you’re taken
Very clingy
Let’s be honest, he follows you around like a lost dog
You snap at him because you need some space then immediately regret it because of the hurt look he gets
“Isaac please! Just stop hovering.”
“I’m sorry.”
“No wait, come back here, I’m the one who should be sorry.”
You said ‘I love you’ first because he couldn’t get the words out
“Y/n, you mean a lot to me and I don’t ever want to see something bad happen to you and-“
“I love you too, Isaac.”
Over all am I saying he is a great boyfriend? Yes, yes I am.

Remember Her - Derek Hale
a/n: THIS MADE ME SO SOFT I SWEAR I WANNA CRY
Tumblr media
•••
It’s been a long day for both you and Derek. You two were out with Scott the entire day trying to find out who the most recent threat to Beacon Hills is. Stiles had a lead, but he had to help his dad with something. So, you three went.
But while you were waiting in the car, Scott pointed something out. He somehow heard four heartbeats, including his own, worrying Derek that someone was in the backseat with you. They are quick to check everywhere, but Scott figures it out. It’s you.
That’s how you found out you were pregnant. Unfortunately, you and Derek didn’t get to celebrate that much since the person you were stalking came out of the building you were parked in front of, and the plan was put in front of everything.
“Who knew Scott would be the one to tell us that we’d be having a baby,” you murmur, running your hands over your stomach. Derek’s eyes follow your motion and his hand comes to rest on yours.
“I’m confused as to why I didn’t hear the heartbeat before he did, though.”
“I’m sure you did, in some way.” He shakes his head and continues rubbing your stomach, a small smile on his face.
“I can’t believe it, though. I’m really happy,” he tells you, pressing a kiss to your forehead.
“You are?” You gaze up at him, finding a loving look in his eyes and a bigger smile on his face.
“Yeah. I mean, it is a surprise, but I’ve always known I wanted a family. Maybe not as soon as it’s happening, but that’s fine. Why? Are you not happy?” You hesitate for a moment and sit up, all of the negatives beginning to show up in your mind.
“Part of me is, because I love you so much and I’ve thought a lot about having a family with you.” Derek smiles sweetly and brushes your hair out of your face.
“But, this place isn’t a good place to raise a child,” you finish. “There’s no suitable place for a crib, it’s an industrial loft that you somehow moved into to protect yourself. This isn’t what I’d think of as a home. And I know you love it here, but I don’t think I’d be able to. Maybe we can find an apartment or a small farmhouse in the middle of nowhere, away from Beacon Hills.”
You could feel Derek beginning to grow annoyed. He hated this conversation. He loves his loft, he feels safe here, but he knows how you feel about it sometimes.
“I don’t think this conversation is gonna go well right now,” he says, scooting away from you a little. You sigh out of frustration and turn onto your side. What was supposed to be a happy moment together turned into a small fight.
“You always say that. I understand you have stuff with the pack here, but sometimes, I feel like they’re more important to you than I am.”
“Hey,” Derek suddenly sits up and pulls you with him, grabbing your face gently in his hands so you’re staring right at him. “Don’t ever think that. I may have a connection to them with the pack, but you will always be the most important person to me. You’ve been with me through so much, with Paige dying, and my family dying, to supporting me moving to New York, away from you while you went to college here. I love you so much, and I never want you to think the opposite of that.” Tears form in your eyes as he brings you in for a passionate kiss.
“I love you so much, (Y/N). Just know that you will always and forever be the number one person in my life. Right in front of our baby.” You can’t help but tear up even more and fall into his body, silently crying into his chest
“I’m sorry I made you feel that way,” he whispers. “I promise to give you both a comfortable and great life.”
“It’s-“
“If you say it’s okay, it’s not. I understand where you’re coming from, I just hate the idea of moving away from everyone.”
“I know you do. But, maybe think about it. I don’t want to force you to anything, but it may be a good change.” And for the first time surrounding this topic, you hear a positive response.
“I will, babe.”
“So it’s a she?” Derek asks the doctor excitedly, your hands engulfed by his.
“You’re having a baby girl,” she confirms with a smile. Derek kisses you sweetly as she begins to wipe the gel off your stomach. “Would you like copies of the sonogram?”
“Yes please,” you respond, sitting up and lowering your shirt. She leaves the room and Derek has yet to stop grinning.
“You got your wish for a daughter,” you chuckle, reaching for his hands once you sit up in the seat. He takes ahold of your hands again, swinging them side to side like a child.
“I know. So you agree on the name then?” You nod fondly and lean into his chest.
“I do. I think it’ll be a nice way to remember her.” He kisses your forehead softly just as the doctor comes back in the room. She hands you the photos in an envelope and sends you on your way.
Later that night, you and Derek are relaxing on the couch. You have your feet up on the small coffee table as Derek, somehow, is laying horizontal, with his head in your lap. His face is right next to your stomach, one of his favorite past times recently.
“I’m so ready to meet her,” he says, running his fingers over your growing bump. Your own hands run through his hair, scratching his scalp soothingly.
“You’re about five months ahead of that,” you chuckle. “We still have a lot to do to get ready for her.”
“Oh, that reminds me, I called the pack over today to tell them.”
Derek sits up and checks his phone for any updates on where everyone is at. Just then, the loft door slams open, Stiles running in with his baseball bat in hand. Sensing danger, Derek is up and in front of you within seconds, flashing his eyes red and showing his teeth to Stiles.
Scared by his appearance, Stiles stumbles back and hides behind Scott, who guides Allison in. Lydia and Isaac follow behind, shutting the door.
“Dude, what’s with the teeth and eyes? You never ward off us like this!” Stiles yells, setting his bat to the floor. Scott smiles, immediately knowing why. He’s the only one who knows.
“I just thought you were someone else.”
“Okay, so why’d you call us here?” Derek brings you to stand and tells them all to sit in your place on the couch. Scott, Allison, Stiles, and Lydia pile onto the couch while Isaac stands behind them.
“So, what’s up?” Allison wonders.
You were nervous to tell them both the good and bad news. Derek’s eyebrows raise in a teasing manner, waiting for you to talk.
“There’s a couple things we want to tell you guys,” you begin.
“You’re pregnant,” Stiles says in a joking tone, laughing after the fact. You stay silent, trying to conceal your smile. “Wait.” He quickly catches on.
“Shut up, you’re pregnant?” Allison excitedly yells.
“Yeah,” you respond with a huge grin on your lips. Her and Lydia jump up to pull you in for a hug, congratulating you.
“I thought I heard another heartbeat,” Isaac says, hugging you tightly. “Congratulations, you’re going to be an amazing mother.”
“Thank you, Isaac. That’s actually how we found out. Scott heard a fourth heartbeat while we were all together.”
“Scott knew and didn’t tell us?” Stiles butts himself into the conversation. Scott shrugs in retaliation.
“Hey, it wasn’t my place to tell. They weren’t ready, and I wasn’t going to blast their business until they were.” You thank him softly, hugging him next.
“So is it a girl or a boy?” Allison questions, Lydia’s eyes wide with wonder as well. Your hands fall to your stomach as you think about the doctor’s visit today.
“It’s a girl. Here!” You run over to your nightstand and grab the sonogram photos, bringing it over so they can see. Everyone passes the photos around as you stand beside your boyfriend, hugging him from the side, watching your closest friends celebrate the amazing news. For now.
“So I’m gonna be an uncle?” Stiles announces. Derek furrows his eyebrows but before he can snarkily respond, you cut him off.
“In a way, yes. But, there’s also something else,” you sadly continue. Everyone’s moods suddenly change at the tone of your voice. Derek’s grip tightens around you comfortingly, nodding in confirmation when you look up at him for support.
“We’re moving,” you tell them. No one moves an inch, their faces contorted in confusion and hurt.
“Moving as in moving out of the loft, or moving to another part of California?” Allison wonders. Your heartbeat quickens and you can feel the tears coming already.
“Actually, moving out of state,” Derek finishes for you. Still, no one moves.
“How far?” Lydida asks.
“Washington.” They all seem to relax just a little knowing that you’re not moving across the country, just one state away.
“Did you buy another house or are you moving into another abandoned loft?” Isaac jokes. Derek laughs and pulls you closer by the waist.
“No. We found a nice farmhouse on a big piece of land. A friend I had from New York was selling it, and he sold it to me at a pretty low price.”
“We’ll really miss you guys,” Scott finally breaks the awkward silence, reaching out to hug both of you together.
“Thank you for being so supportive, Scott,” you whisper.
“Anything for my two closest friends.”
Your new house was finally ready for you to move into about a month or so later, so you packed up everything, or lack thereof, in Derek’s loft and left for Washington. Everyone in the pack was there to say goodbye. Lots of tears were shed, promises to visit and call were made, and finally, you were on the road to your new future.
It was a stressful couple of days, Derek doing most of the work since he didn’t want you to overwork yourself. Thankfully, his friend sold the house fully furnished, so you didn’t have to buy any new furniture.
You finish decorating your bedroom by setting a picture frame of you and Derek on your fifth anniversary on your dresser before sitting on the bed and gazing out the large window to the beautiful mountains.
“Nursery is finished,” Derek announces as he walks into your room, flopping down onto the bed beside you. You crawl up to the headboard and wrap his arm around your shoulder to cuddle up against him.
“It’s starting to feel like home,” you say, closing your eyes, enjoying the peace. Derek’s hand comes to rest on your bump, his thumb rubbing over your shirt. He laughs softly when he feels your daughter kick his hand. He plays with her for a few minutes, moving his hand around your stomach to see if she follows. Butterflies fill your stomach from both her kicks and Derek’s warm laughter, your favorite sound.
“She’s going to be such a daddy’s girl,” you tell him. You reach up to kiss him sweetly before settling back down in his arms.
“Have you told the pack back home yet?” You ask Derek, quietly closing the door to the nursery of your new home.
It’s been a few days since you’ve given birth to your daughter, and it’s been quite crazy. You’ve barely gotten sleep, haven’t had much time to take a shower, your body is still recovering; basically all the things that come with being a new mother.
“I was just going to. I know Stiles is gonna be mad at me for not telling him the second she was born.” You giggle and curl into his body, eyes falling shut during a rare moment of peace.
“Come on,” he whispers, “let’s head back to our room.” You tiredly follow him down the hall, right into your room.
His phone beeps and buzzes with texts from the group, but he chooses to ignore that for now.
“I love you so much, (Y/N),” he mumbles against your forehead. “I’m so glad you’re the mother of my child, you’re already a perfect mother.”
“You’re already a great dad as well. Who knew the Sourwolf would be such an amazing dad?” He chuckles and slides under the covers.
“You wanna go take a shower before getting into bed?” He asks.
“Ugh, that sounds great. I’ll be quick.”
You do as you promised, taking the quickest yet longest shower you could, and returning back to Derek’s warm embrace as soon as you can. But, you find that he has your daughter resting against his bare chest, a sight that melts your heart.
“How’d everyone react?” You wonder, gently stroking your daughter’s back with your finger.
“They love her name,” he says, adoration dripping from his tone. “Thank you for letting me honor my mom.” You grin up at him and rest your head on his shoulder.
“She didn’t deserve what happened to her. She should have been alive to see her granddaughter.” Derek’s head falls onto yours as Talia stirs in his arms, getting comfortable again.
“Talia Eleanor Hale,” Derek whispers, “I love you so so much. Your grandmother was an incredible woman, and I’ll be sure to tell you every story I remember of her.” A small grin is permanently plastered on your face as he softly tells your daughter stories of his own mother, knowing he’ll never get tired of telling them.
“She’s already so loved,” you say. “By us and by the pack.”
“I know my mother would have loved her too.”
“She’d be really proud of you, Der.” Derek kisses you passionately for a few seconds, then presses his forehead against yours. He sniffles softly, as his emotions slowly take over him.
He’s truly happy in this moment.
“I can’t express how much I love you,” he murmurs.

⚠️- what is your current wip
The main fic for my Sunflowers series, which I'm super excited about!! It'll be my first thiam longfic (but very werewolf culture and pack-centric). I've made a ridiculous number of moodboards and plans and ahhh ♥♥ I actually just posted chapter 1 on accident and it's too much of a hassle to try to take it down and redo the tags and everything, so... I guess you guys are free to check it out lmao, but it's not edited or anything.
"Sunflowers in the Sober Light of Dawn" chapter 1 snippet:
“You’re all homeless,” Derek announced monotonously, and Theo suddenly wondered if Derek had thrown together some sort of support group—or maybe he was trying to build a pathetic beta pack of orphans. Either way, Theo really wished he hadn’t come to the meeting.
“Since Stiles and I are living here in the loft, I have an apartment that I’m not currently using,” Derek said, taking three keys out of his pocket and holding them out in the palm of his hand. “It’s three bedrooms, fully furnished, and I stocked the kitchen this morning.”
“Why?” Alec wondered, squinting at him skeptically. “I mean, why are you helping us? We’re not…”
“Pack,” Brett finished. “Just because we live in the same town doesn’t mean we’re pack.”
“We’re all omegas,” Derek said. “We don’t need to be pack to help each other out. Whether we want to or not, living here means we’re gonna have to deal with whatever comes knocking on our door. If you choose to be in the territory, then you choose to protect it as your home. There’s no resident alpha here, which leaves us open to attack from just about everyone.”
“So, you’re offering to house us so that we’ll fight with you?” Alec asked.
“Your best chance of survival is having a roof over your head, and I’d rather not be the only one alive to defend this place. Call it whatever you want, but you’ll be fighting regardless of if you’re housed or not."

heyy i've literally been on your blog for like 4 seconds BUT i saw some ships that i love, so - do you want to do a list of your OTPs from every fandom? partly because it could be fun for you, partly because i need more serotonin which i only get from finding new ships haha
omg absolutely! First of all, thank you for asking 💕
I just started writing and this ended up being super long *hides in shame* I hope you enjoy it ✨
I love so many shows and ships, so I'll list them all below but if you ask what my absolute favorites are, I'll just add "!!!" to the fronts of the specific ships that make my brain melt, bc of how fucking much I love them.
The number of ! indicates the amount of brain damage that ship has given me, which is directly proportional to how many hours I could go on and on about them as characters and them as a couple and how perfect they are for each other.
Alright let's do this.
I'll start with the classics, and then move on to lesser known ones:
!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Queer as Folk US - Britin (Brian x Justin)
!!!!!!! Harry Potter - Wolfstar (Sirius x Remus)
! Harry Potter (ot3) - Wolfstarbucks (Sirius x Remus x James)
Harry Potter - Jily (James x Lily)
Harry Potter - Drarry (Draco x Harry)
Harry Potter - Scorbus (Scorpius x Albus Severus)
look- I know jkr is problematic, which is why I don't give her money anymore. But fanfic is free and I grew up with these characters, I will not let go of them. I have SO MANY thoughts about wolfstar and the Marauders jfc I could go on for hours.
!!! BBC Sherlock - Johnlock (John x Sherlock)
And any adaptation of Sherlock Holmes tbh, the Guy Ritchie movies are also *chef's kiss*
!!!!!!!! Supernatural - Destiel (Dean x Castiel)
fair warning here: Destiel is my otp and I believe in endgame Destiel but as I've said before, Dean is my emotional support character, which means I ship him with basically anyone who is strong enough to lift him up against a wall 🤗 which includes but not limited to:
Supernatural - Denny (Dean x Benny)
Supernatural - Drowley (Dean x Crowley)
Supernatural - Dean x Lee
Supernatural - Dean x Lissa
Also, if you've never watched spn... Idk what to tell you, you're in for a wild ride. Because that show is BRILLIANT but ALSO and (I cannot express this enough) at the same time it is a trashcan on fire. If you've watched it, you know exactly what I mean.
Alright, let's move on:
!!!!! Shameless US - Gallavich (Ian x Mickey)
!!! Teen Wolf - Sterek (Stiles x Derek)
Teen Wolf - Scallison (Scott x Allison)
Teen Wolf - Allydia (Allison x Lydia)
Brooklyn 99 - Peraltiago (Amy x Jake)
Brooklyn 99 - Holt x Kevin
Brooklyn 99 - Rosa x Pimento
Welcome to Night Vale - Cecilos (Cecil x Carlos
Welcome to Night Vale - Michelle x Maureen
WTNV is a podcast, not visual media but if you haven't listened to it, do yourself a favor and do it now!!
Sense8 (ot3) - Hernando x Lito x Danny
Sense8 - Raj x Kala
Sense8 - Amanita x Nomi
Sense8 (ot3) - Raj x Kala x Wolfgang
Glee - Seblaine (Blaine x Sebastian)
Glee - Huntbastian (Hunter x Sebastian)
Glee - Brittana (Brittany x Santana)
Supergirl - Supercorp (Lena x Kara)
Supergirl - Karolsen (Kara x Jimmy)
The Flash - Thallen (Barry x Eddie)
The Flash - Westallen (Barry x Iris)
The Flash (ot3) - Westhallen (Eddie x Barry x Iris)
The Flash - Harmon (Cisco x Hartley)
Davinci's Demons - Leonardo x Lorenzo
... Aaaand, I think that's all I can remember for the fictional ones 🤔 some of these shows I haven't watched in yeeeears, but I thought I'd add them bc why not.
Now. That being said...
These next ones might be problematic. But I *do* actually ship some rpf... I KNOW SHAME ON ME.
Now, I want to make it very clear that I only engage in fan discussions, I read fanfic, and then I move on with my life. I DO NOT bring this up to the people involved, nor their families nor their friends nor their partners. And I hate when people do that. I know these are real people and not fictional characters so I don't harass them about this, nor do it bring it up to them in social media or their concerts or in any possible way.
I just enjoy my anonymous tinhatting with strangers online, and then I get off the internet, and go to work, and see my friends, and I move on with my life. I simply like the idea of these ships. I like to imagine, from whatever little information I have received about these people (based on what THEY themselves have made available for me and others to look at and overanalyize) I like to imagine that this people had been at one point or another romantically involved. But I honestly couldn't care less if they weren't. I'm just having fun reading fics online.
My rpf ships are:
Larry (Harry Styles x Louis Tomlinson)
Kaylor (Taylor Swift x Karlie Kloss)
Swiftgron (Taylor Swift x Dianna Agron)
and I guess for the sake of fairness I'll add:
Taylor Swift x Joe Alwyn (bc unlike some gaylors and bi-lors I DO believe they're together for real, and they make me believe in love 🥺)
... Aaaand that's it. That's all the people and characters I ship. 😬

All this is just further proof that fandom is DEEP in their own, self indulgent crafted narrative/au that they assert as "canon". They actually HATE the show for subverting common tropes. No, the broody and attractive white man from a distinguished lineage isn't the hero. Nor is the snarky white sidekick. Fanfiction would have you believe Derek was kindly offering lessons to Scott, who rudely snubbed him. Stans whine about the "lost potential" of exploring the Hale Family, but it WAS NEVER ABOUT THEM!!!!
Tumblr media
Your question struck me because it's so completely true. They claim to be looking at canon, but they really aren't.
One story I read this morning had Stiles joining the Hale Pack and ending his friendship with Scott because Scott 'neglected' him after Gerard kidnapped him in Master Plan (2x12), because the fact that Scott 'left with Allison and Chris' shows that Scott didn't care about Stiles at all.
Except that we don't see Scott leave with Allison and Chris. The next scene we see is Allison breaking up with Scott and we know it's the same night. But there's no indication that Scott didn't talk to Stiles after Jackson's resurrection. And it certainly seems that Stiles and Scott are in a pretty good situation with each other at the end of the season. Why would their minds go to "Scott didn't care that Stiles was kidnapped and hurt!?!?!"
Especially when their minds don't go there after Raving (2x08). It took you a moment to figure out what I was talking about, didn't you?
When Victoria is using poison gas to kill Scott, Derek, who is standing next to Stiles and his mountain ash line, has to shout at Stiles to break the line because he's sensed Scott is in trouble. And Stiles huffs and breaks the line. But we don't see Stiles ask Scott if he's okay. We don't see Stiles help find Scott. We don't see Stiles at the Animal Clinic while Deaton is taking care of Scott. Derek's there and waiting, but Stiles isn't.
Why don't their minds go to "Stiles is selfishly focused on his own needs and is neglecting Scott!?!?" Because it would be a ludicrous conclusion to draw; Stiles has demonstrated his care and feelings for Scott in the past just as Scott has demonstrated his care and feelings for Stiles in the past.
Now, this is a double standard, one of many, many, many double standards in a fandom that seems to relish them. And one could make the argument that it's a deliberate and conscious choice to ignore one scene in order to support their desired conclusions in another, but after reading enough well-meaning author's notes which talk about how they think that "Scott was a better friend than canon portrays," I think it might be something more troubling:
The fandom has been indoctrinated so deeply by the culture to see non-white characters as inherently not as good or as interesting as white characters that they can't really judge fairly.
I know that there are a lot of minority readers out there looking at each other and going 'duh, stupid white man is just figuring this out now!?!?!', so let me elaborate. I've always assigned a certain level of malicious self-interest to this before, that they chose to ignore scenes that run counter to their desired end -- they wanted the show to be about the Hales and Stiles, but, as you put it, it wasn't, so they were going to get back at the production.
But I'm beginning to suspect that white supremacy is so fully ingrained in the culture that it's become like an optical illusion. They literally cannot see the scenes that establish the idea that this is Scott's story and he's the lead protagonist.
As an immediate aside, no one should possibly interpret this as me arguing that white viewers have no obligation to overcome this narrative illusion or that minority viewers must teach them otherwise if they want to be able to participate fully in fandom. Individuals are responsible for their own behavior, regardless of cultural influences!
But it explains how often well-meaning people can come up with interpretations so essentially disproved by the narrative, again and again. People can say that they like Scott but believe that Scott somehow had less virtue, less talent or less claim to the focus within the story.
It's why they can argue that Scott had 'shit control' because he didn't follow Derek, when Scott literally surprised Derek with his control in Heart Monitor (1x06).
It's why they can argue that Scott was a poor student or can't keep a secret or can't bake or can't do any number of things it is assumed that white characters can do without question, how he is a lovable idiot without any positive qualities that weren't given to him by the Hales or Stiles.
It's why they can scold Scott for not being able to tell that Theo was a chimera infiltrator but forget that Derek couldn't tell that Deaton wasn't an alpha and couldn't tell that Jennifer was the Darach.
It's why they hate Deaton for insulting Derek once and not 'helping enough' but think Peter was the Sassiest Happy Fun Uncle who cared for his family so much.
It's why Kira is a placeholder and annoying, but Cora somehow wasn't.
It's why Monroe being slashed up by the Beast, forced to cover herself with her friend's body, and then having to wait there for the sheriff to find her is a 'stupid reason' to start hunting supernaturals, but Scott telling Stiles to go talk to his father about the person he killed and then decided to hide it is grounds for the end of the friendship if not outright revenge murder.
It's why Stiles could never ever trust Morrell because she worked with the Alpha Pack and promised to euthanize him to protect others, but he would love, love, love, love, and have Derek Hale's babies when Derek worked with Peter and spent an entire season trying to murder Lydia.
It's why they so strongly believed that the show should have ended with Alpha Derek and the Hale Family reclaiming their family's legacy, with all the little betas following them around.
It's why the subversive nature of having the hero be the earnest Latino and not the broody white antihero flies over their heads. It's why they conjure up elaborate and self-contradictory fantasies of unreliable narrators.
They just can't believe that this is Scott's story.
I'm finding it harder to believe that every one of these people is a malicious asshole who chooses to ignore canon so they can get their white power fantasy fix. It's exactly how it's been described.
