Ok but like hear me out.
Steve Harrington being deaf due to the amount of head trauma he has suffered over the years meaning now he has to navigate a world he once knew fully in silence and he never brought it up until it was too late cause he didn’t want to burden everyone in the group with how he can’t really hear that well and it’s getting progressively worse. But here he is now fully deaf and trying his hardest to live a normal life and yes he is finally doing it getting better at reading lips, he becomes fluent in ASL even though no one else in the group is. And then Eddie Munson comes along all loud gestures and enthusiasm and that’s what attracts Steve to him at first because when Eddie is near, talking in the group he never feels like he’s missing out on things due to his lack of hearing because eddies gestures and bravado basically make up for his lack of hearing and it feels amazing for Steve to feel that included in a group conversation and then he finds out Eddie is fluent in ASL cause of course if anyone in Hawkins would be fluent in ASL it’s Eddie Munson the man that surprises basically everyone he meets and Steve just fucking falls in love straight aways when the first one on one conversation Eddie and Steve have is fully in ASL. idk dude this is half baked 4am thought but it’s a thought no less However steddie thoughts aside a deaf Steve Harrington can be something so personal

'I WAS A CHILD!' the sound cutting through the dining room, all conversation ceased. Steve's voice was furious, and filled with a fury that nobody had ever heard from him. The Hopper-Byers house was full, the Christmas party had been in full swing. The Sinclair's, the Henderson's, the Munson's, the Wheeler's, as well as Robin Buckley and Steve Harrington had spent the day here having a great time. At some point right before dinner Steve's parents, Richard and Margaret Harrington, had surprised them all by showing up unannounced. Steve had barely interacted with them at all.
The younger kids had moved into a different room as the conversation between the adults had turned to their kids and their childhoods. Joyce had mentioned Jonathon's favorite toy had been a red firetruck, and it had broken when Will was two. She had been so pleased to talk about her fond memories. Margaret Harrington had mentioned that Steve's favorite toy had been a stuffed tiger and her husband had smiled and told them proudly that he had 'gotten rid of it'. And the two Harrington parents talked about the three toys Steve had been given as a child that had mysteriously vanished when he was four as punishment, while the other parents had looked uncomfortable and tried to change the topic. Steve had been quiet but the anger was mounting. And suddenly it was too much, and the words he had been holding back burst out of him.
'Are you going to include the part where you beat my ass so bad I couldn't sit for three days? Or the part where you forced me to watch as my only toys were burned? Or the part where you smacked me because I was crying? Is that also included in this fond nostalgia?' his voice was cold.
Richard Harrington floundered for a second, 'well son you had to be taught manners.' he started to say. 'It was-'
But Steve interjected, 'I WAS A CHILD!' he yelled. 'too young to understand why my toys were taken away. Too small to fight back! Too little to understand why my parents were taking away my presents! But that doesn't matter does it? So long as I was a perfect, quiet, obedient childlike doll for you to show off.' He stood up. He glared at his parents, 'Sometimes I wish you had aborted me before I was born. I wish you had thought about abandoning a child would do to it, about what smacking and hitting and freezing out your child would do. But instead I had to pretend to be fine. Never telling anyone because Harringtons don't have emotions and don't cry.' he mocked. 'just stay the fuck away from me.' He walked out of the room and out of the house before either parent could say anything more.
Steve got into his car and drove off. Speeding as fast as he could away from the house.
Once he was gone, Sue Sinclair looked at the Harrington's, in a tone so cold she stated, 'I don't find it funny or cute to beat my children. Especially if they were that young.' Her eyes held a burning rage that nobody had seen before, 'I hope that boy is ok. But you best stay away from him. That's my kid's older brother you were talking about.' Margaret Harrington suddenly realized what they had been talking about and before anymore could be said she grabbed her husband's arm and tried to get him out of the house.
But Hopper's voice, emotionless, stopped her dead in her tracks, 'anything else you want to add? Maybe the part where you left him alone for months and weeks at a time when he was younger? Maybe more about beating him? I, for one, am curious what else you can be put in prison for, being as I am the police chief.' Richard Harrington's face went white. And he stuttered out an awkward reply and the Harrington's left the house.
Eddie waited until they were both gone, he grabbed his keys and slipped out with Nancy, Argyle, Robin, and Jonathan. They drove around in silence, looking for him. As they drove past the quarry, they saw his car parked, but it was empty. They parked beside his car and carefully walked around the area and found him sitting on the ledge, watching the water, fave blank but his eyes were red-rimmed and puffy like he'd been crying.
Robin took the first step towards him and sat down beside him. None of them spoke, nothing needed to be said.
Maybe it won't get better anytime soon. But for now he had his family around him. His actual family. It was Christmas, he'd be ok sometime soon. He slumped against Robin and Eddie, letting his eyes slide shut.

If you’re after prompts can I suggest Steve being hurt but not showing it when the kids forget they had plans w him because he’s used to being second choice but he thought it would take them longer to realise that he wasn’t worth the effort than it had. That kind of “it’s okay, I know I’m nobody’s first choice” vibe
Ooo a chance for a lil angst and a lil fluff, I love it ty
Since pseudo-adopting seven kids, Steve had had to become a lot more organised with his time. He now had a calendar in the kitchen covered in different colour pens for each kid and their events. There were Lucas' games and Hellfire pickups and dropoffs, taking Erica for ice cream and everyone to the arcade. There were skate park trips with Max and trips up the hill for Dustin and Suzie. Regular movie nights with both the teens and the kids and pool parties to beat the heat. In short, Steve never forgot what they had planned.
The small scribble of words had been on the calendar since the beginning of the year, it was every year. For Steve's birthday, the kids were going to come over and watch movies, that's all Steve had wanted for his birthday was for his family to be safe and happy with him. On the day of Steve's 21st birthday, he woke up, went downstairs, got coffee, and crossed off the day, smiling thinking about the night ahead. He was cooking himself some breakfast when the phone rang.
"Hey, Steve!"
"Hey Dustin, are you kids still able to get here by yourselves tonight, or do you want me to pick you up?"
"About that, Eddie has been sick the last couple of days so we had to postpone Hellfire to tonight, that's ok right, it's just movies we can do that on Friday?"
"Oh, um, yeah sure Dustin, that's ok, do you need me to drop you off or pick you guys up?" Steve said swallowing his disappointment.
"Eddie is picking us up from school but could you take us home?"
"Sure, Dustin, I'll see you guys later."
Steve didn't feel like his eggs after that. He spent the rest of the day cleaning the house and talking to Robin who was visiting her grandmother but promised to make up for it as soon as she was back. At least someone had remembered.
He pulled up to Eddie's trailer a little after 9, the laughter inside made him feel a bit better, at least the kids had fun, that's what was important. He got out and knocked on the door.
"Stevie! Hey kids you're wonderful mother is here!"
Steve giggled, he and Eddie had gotten closer in the couple of months since Vecna.
"Are you ok, sweetheart?"
"Yeah, yeah I'm fine, was just a long day."
"Tell you what, after you drop the gremlins home, why don't you come back and hang, I've got a joint with your name on it."
"That sounds perfect, thanks Eds."
Steve smiled waving at Eddie as he ushered the kids into his car. The car trip was filled with the kids regaling the tales of their session, no mention of the date.
Steve felt better once the trailer was back in his vision. The two boys laid on Eddie's bed passing a joint between them.
"So Stevie, you gonna tell me what's got my favourite boy all sad-looking?"
"I'm your favourite boy?"
"Of course you are, don't tell Henderson, and don't avoid the question, angel, what's wrong?"
"It's my birthday."
"What? That's today? Fuck! My fever brain must've muddled up the dates."
"It's ok, don't blame you, you were sick."
"Wait why didn't the kids say something? I wouldn't have put Hellfire on your birthday!"
"I think they forgot, they were supposed to come over for movies tonight, Dustin called to reschedule, but only Robin remembered. It's alright, I know Hellfire is more important to them."
"No Stevie, you're more important than some game. Happy birthday, sweetheart."
Steve couldn't help it, he leant forward and kissed Eddie's cheek.
"I thought it was your birthday, not mine, Stevie." Eddie said pulling Steve close into a hug.
"You deserve to be someone's first priority, Stevie. I'm going to punish those kids' characters so bad next session."
Steve laughs at this and thinks if all his birthdays end with him and Eddie together like this then he'd cancel a thousand plans.
Eddie does in fact berate the kids the next day and they're all quite distraught over forgetting Steve's birthday, although Dustin cheers up when he sees Steve and Eddie holding hands.

Okay but like it makes no sense for steve to talk about peggy in the support group in endgame, like genuinely makes no sense. i know that marvel put it there to remind people of steve's "straightness" and how much he "loves" peggy. but it makes no sense, because even if that was the scenario, he wouldn't talk about peggy, he would talk about the people he lost in the snap. Bucky, sam, t'challa, wanda etc. So why would he not talk about them? well the only logical answer is that he can't talk about them because it just hurts too damn much, so he picks a safe topic, that wont have him crumbling to the floor AKA. peggy. Therefore we can deduce from this, that peggy is not as important to steve as anyone he lost in the snap, and marvel's attemps at proving steve's love for peggy, just prove how much he doesnt love her. In this essay i will-

brain rotting thinking about steve having christmas with eddie and the party. he can’t even remember the last time he had been excited to celebrate.
but the kids and eddie make it so special just by being there, and then some. they help him decorate that stupidly big, empty house. and they trade presents in comfy sweaters, with plans to make dinner together and eat a ridiculous amount of food.
the kids get him a framed picture of them all together, and it makes him so emotional just looking at physical evidence that this group of people care about him enough to do something like that.
don’t even get me started on eddie, who would take him home to wayne’s and make sure he doesn’t wake up alone, makes sure he stays warm and watches cheesy holiday movies that he and wayne watch every year.
just steve harrington being loved and knowing he’s loved. that’s all.

Steve Harrington is suppose to have a perfect life, perfect girlfriend, perfect grades, perfect facade, and a straight way to college. Steve Harrington is eighteen, heartbroken, and stuck in a dead end job. Steve Harrington wakes up sweating with his hand reaching towards a spiked bat leaning against his bedside table. Robin was the first one to notice his hunched shoulders, the thin skin under his eyes far too bruised, and almost hidden flinches. The first time he had to lay on the floor in the backroom because ohmygodhecouldn’tbreathe she just closed the shutters and left him some ice. She didn’t even know about the alternate dimension shit yet and she just didn’t ask why he was so messed up. Maybe that’s why he thought he loved her, no one had quietly cared for Steve like that in so long. After the mall burned down and on another late phone-call she whispered “Steve, I-I think you have PTSD” and Steve’s world tilted to the left. He wasn’t allowed to be broken like that. That wasn’t suppose to be in his cards (that his parents roughly shoved into his hands the day he was born). He’d just been knocked in the head a few too many times he wasn’t broken. That was for soldiers who came back from the horror of the trenches not Steve.

Hey, I’m in a mood to ramble about Steve today. This gets pretty long though, so pull up a chair.
I could go on for hours about how the Duffers could not write a character arc if you put a gun to their heads, but they actually came pretty close with Steve. I also really like to look at what’s actually happening in the story versus how the narrative frames it, so we’re gonna talk about Steve.
So at the beginning, Steve is meant to be perceived as “Nancy’s jerk boyfriend” and that’s it. Honestly, I’m surprised he ever made it past that, given how the Duffers handled every other male character aside from Jonathan and now Argyle. Anyway, we’re meant to see him as an arrogant rich boy who’s a jerk to Jonathan in s1, and nothing else.
But let’s set the narrative lens aside for a second. He caught Jonathan trespassing on his family’s property, taking inappropriate photos of his girlfriend. Now I know this all gets addressed later, but in the moment, it’s really not a good look for Jonathan. I think breaking Jonathan’s camera was too far, but Steve’s anger is justified. The incident with the spray paint and him calling Jonathan a slur are absolutely not being excused here, I’m merely pointing out that his actions before that point were not exactly as the narrative frames them.
Then we have his famous match with the demogorgon, where Steve actually had come to apologize to Jonathan and instead got pulled into the Upside Down mess. He jumps right into his role as the protector, and he’s a much better person because of this.
Then in s2, Steve and Nancy have been dating for almost a year. He is an extremely devoted boyfriend, and he clearly adores Nancy, but it’s obvious that Nancy is still thinking about Jonathan. Even when she helps him out with academic stuff, she continues to fling his own poor grades and his shortcomings in his face. Then she dumps him, and he is absolutely devastated by it.
At this point, it’s worth mentioning that Steve’s parents are virtually never present. Granted, some of the parents in the show are fairly uninvolved, but Steve’s parents are just never there. Let’s re-evaluate Steve’s relationships in light of this. He’s popular but Tommy and Carol have dropped him by s2, so he doesn’t have many (if any) real friends. Take this with how attached he was to Nancy, and it paints a picture of simply a very lonely teenaged boy. She’s the first person who’s chosen to stick around him in a while for something other than his status. He was so deeply in love with her, and her decision to dump him is like a knife to the heart for him.
After his breakup with Nancy, he gets dragged into the Upside Down mess again by Dustin, who at this point he probably just knows as “Nancy’s little brother’s friend.” And he throws himself into helping and protecting because he feels useful and wanted here, with Dustin, who’s like a little brother to him. He gives Dustin relationship advice and while it’s not good, it does show us how deeply his breakup with Nancy hurt him. We see him talk to Nancy briefly, and we see how deeply her words about him being a “shitty boyfriend” hurt him. He’s convinced he was the problem, as if she wasn’t the one constantly brushing him off and casting longing looks at Jonathan.
In s3, things are better. He’s much happier, and he’s overjoyed to see Dustin. However, he failed to get accepted into any colleges, presumably because of his low grades and his flopped admission letters. He’s developed some feelings for Robin and he’s still very absorbed with trying to get a date, but given the ease with which he takes her rejection and her coming out to him, he’s in a much more stable place emotionally by the end of the season. He states that he is no longer in love with Nancy and considers her a friend.
It seemed like we were through with Steve being second fiddle and hung up on romance, because he had friends now. He had his little found family.
Then everything changed with the arrival of s4. It butchered Steve’s dynamic with Dustin by having Dustin constantly belittle his intelligence. When Steve says that Nancy nearly shot him, she says he nearly deserved it, when he was coming to apologize to Jonathan. Nancy continues to insinuate that he’s stupid, and he never acknowledges this. We hear about how much this lonesome only child wants a big family, only to have to listen to him admit that it always included her. As if she isn’t still in a relationship with Jonathan at this time, as if she hasn’t constantly insulted him and made him feel undeserving of her love. The season concludes their relationship with Nancy being back with Jonathan but not communicating their problems, while Steve looks on longingly from the sidelines.
We can have Steve being clueless and out of the loop without being treated like he’s stupid. We can have Steve find belonging in his close friendship with Robin, and the older brother role he plays in Dustin’s life. We can have Steve be happy without him needing to get back with his ex who do obviously damaged his self esteem. Steve’s arc and his worth as a character do not begin and end with romance, and I’m sick of seeing another character’s story be a way to say that romance is the only thing that matters.

Just noticed a trend where every season, Steve gets fucked up worse than the last. Season 1 he got beat up, season 2 he got beat unconscious, season 3 he was fucking tortured, and season 4 he had his sides ripped out and a his fake out death was used as an episode cliffhanger. What the hell are they going to do to our baby girl next season????

I made a post about nurse!Steve a while ago, and it’s been living in my mind ever since. So… here we go.
It starts with an offhand comment from Nancy about how he gets hurt too often, and wouldn’t it be nice if they had a nurse in the group to patch everyone up? Steve just nods along that day, but the comment sparks an interest unlike anything else had since he joined the basketball team. His kids do get hurt a lot, and at least half of them will never willingly go to the hospital if they really need it- especially Max and Will.
Steve might not have the grades to get himself into a good college, but he’s smart and he has his father’s money. It’s not like the man notices when he makes large purchases- he probably signs the bills without even looking. Nothing Steve did could possibly make a dent in that fortune, not even college. And nursing school isn’t exactly college. It’s intense, but Steve loves it. Turns out helping people is a thing he really likes to do. So during the days, he works at Family Video with Robin and helps the kids with whatever they need. At night, since he doesn’t really sleep regularly anymore no matter what, he does classes for his nursing degree.
It takes him two years to complete the degree (and one more almost-apocalypse), because he does it in his spare time and only at night. It’s not exactly a secret, but he never tells anyone and they never figure it out. He almost gets caught once- he leaves a textbook out on his desk when Robin is over, and she spots it almost immediately. Instead of getting excited that he’s making something of himself, though, she immediately assumes that he’s sleeping with a student. It stings so badly that Steve just forces himself to smirk and goes along with it.
Once he’s graduated, it’s easy to get a job at the hospital as a night nurse. It takes exactly two nights for Hopper to figure out that he’s working there. A drunk driver is brought in to be looked over before getting locked up, and Steve just happens to be the one doing the check. It doesn’t take much to get Hopper to agree to keep what he’s learned to himself, but Steve feels bad for making him promise to keep the secret. It’s just easier when nobody knows.
It’s Vecna’s fault that Steve has to reveal his newly acquired skills, all because of Eddie freaking Munson. Steve’s seen him in the hospital a few times over the months he’s been a nurse, and he knows that Eddie’s seen him as well. He’s managed to avoid confrontation for a long time, and he figures Eddie’s pride won’t let him say anything about seeing him there. He’s wrong. The injuries are minor- cuts and bruises, mostly. Nancy has the worst of it with a sprained wrist that Steve has no clue how she got. She’s just holding it to her chest, being careful not to move it, and Steve’s been watching her but hasn’t offered his help yet because he’s sure she’ll turn him down. Eddie has no problem with speaking up.
“Wheeler, just let the nurse patch you up! We need you all in one piece to kill this fucker,” he tells her, gently shoving her towards Steve.
“You haven’t even graduated,” Nancy points out, looking unimpressed. Eddie’s eyebrows climb up his forehead, and Steve tries to catch his eye before he can-
“I meant Harrington. You know, the guy who literally works at the hospital? Wears scrubs and everything? I assume he’s licensed, or else the hospital is even worse off than I thought,” Eddie replies. By this point, everyone is staring between the two of them.
“Steve works at Family Video,” Robin chimes in helpfully, sounding so confused. Steve would agree with her, but he’s promised himself that he’ll never lie to her. He does work at Family Video… but he also works at the hospital. Lying by omission is still lying.
“Sure, during the day,” Eddie agrees easily. “But I know what I’ve seen. He’s a nurse by night.”
“Steve?” Nancy asks, voice soft but demanding. A time he knows from months of dating. She needs an answer, and she will not be letting it go.
“I got my nursing degree six months ago,” he confirms quietly. “I work night shifts at the hospital during the week, and some Saturdays.”
“Most Saturdays,” Eddie corrects with a casual grin. Steve kind of wants to strangle him… but it’s also a relief to not have to hide this side of himself.
“Most Saturdays,” he agrees with a sigh. “I like to help people. And it was your idea, Nance.”
“My- oh,” Nancy says, eyes getting wider by the second. “But that was years ago!”
“Yeah,” he agrees. “It took two years to finish, because I only did night classes. I’ve been patching the kids up since six months into classes. Nobody ever noticed, and I didn’t want it to be a big deal.”
“The textbook!” Robin says loudly, staring at him. “You weren’t sleeping with a student!”
“I was not,” Steve agrees carefully. “But it was easier to let you think so.”
“Steve…” Nancy says, and there are tears in her eyes. Steve is supremely uncomfortable, but he doesn’t know how to politely change the subject. Eddie has no problem with this, either.
“So let Nurse Steve take care of you, and we’ll keep planning! Andale!” He claps his hands, manic smile in place. He winks when he catches Steve’s eye, and Steve… Steve blushes.
There’s no time to talk about it after that, but Nancy and Robin both pull him aside to apologize as they prepare for the end of the world. Steve never gets a chance to thank Eddie with his words, but he does manage to make it back to them in time to keep him from dying in the Upside Down. It’s a long time before anyone calls Steve dumb again.

Just imagine steve getting blind after fighting vecna in S5. This happen ‘cause he self sacrifice to save Robin/ The kids, another big hit in his head, after defeating Vecna/One/Henry, everybody was happy and exhausted, Eddie was free of vecnas control and now can get out of the Upside Down. They separate like always and steve goes to his house, alone. Steve fall sleep and next morning find out he is blind, he knew it could happen, the doctors tells him with all his head injuries it was a big possibility to get blind.
He wouldn’t tell to anyone, he just lock his self in the house, depressed and filling like a bother to them again.

Season 5 will end with the Harringtons coming home, stepping over rubble and small fires, they climb up their broken stairs, passing by a crying and bandaged Steve crouched in his doorway, grabbing some clothes from the cupboard and leaving again, stopping only to tell Steve to bring in the pool chairs so they don't crack in the sun.

Ok listen, Bi Steve is dope okay, love him. But honestly looking at his story through the lense of compulsory heterosexuality creates a really interesting interpretation.
Steve’s entire life he’s had his fate decided for him. He would get educated, settle down and marry a woman, and have kids. That’s the mold that he’s been forcing himself to fit in, and then along comes Nancy. Nancy is exactly what his parents expect of them, a nice girl from an okay family that will be a decent wife. And for Steve, this is it, right? This is who he is supposed to be with, and he even likes her as a person so really it’s not that bad. But then it doesn’t work out, and Steve comes to the realization that if he can’t make himself feel that way about Nancy, then it’s never going to happen.
Even in Season 4 this makes sense, he keeps going out with a bunch of girls but he can’t make himself be attracted to them and he’s tired of pretending and the girls pick up on this too which is way it never goes anywhere. Even when he goes to that basketball game with Brenda, he doesnt really pay attention to her and he seems like he would rather be there will someone else.
Tl:dr there’s no one “correct” answer for headcannoning but I think Gay Steve Harrington is neat

did we all collectively agree that Steve’s parents neglect/abuse him based on one party he had at his house in season one when they were out of town?
anyway, the Harringtons are terrible, neglectful parents and Steve deserves the world and that’s just how it is.
