I’ve decided to include our babeypurser McElroy because the role of Purser is sometimes regarded as an officer role. Among all the officers, Lightoller (B), Pitman (5), Boxhall (2) and Lowe (14) survived the sinking. McElroy was the only officer whose body was recovered and identified; he was buried at sea.

Now to the fun facts!

Henry Wilde: he was already captain and was set to command the SS Cymric for the Liverpool to Boston Route. Unfortunately, the coal strike happened and his first voyage with Cymric was delayed to presumably 1st May. White Star Line decided to put him in onto the crew of Titanic as Chief Officer.

As you guys may know already, Henry Wilde is my favourite officer so it’s not surprising that I have been posting about him for this April. I also am currently doing a series of TikToks for his actions throughout Titanic’s maiden voyage as well🙈

William Murdoch: Charles Lightoller thought his bestie’s moustache make him look ugly so he grew his moustache so that Will could shave. Nevertheless, we all think otherwise.

Charles Lightoller: of course, his role as one of the captains of the little ships during the Dunkirk Evacuation. He saved around 130 lives in it with his family yacht, the Sundowner.

Side note: currently, the Sundowner is a museum ship in Ramsgate but sadly, the yacht is in a bad condition and we need money to repair. I know I don’t have much high opinions on the British (yeah except Henry Wilde), despite having been living in England for almost 5 years, but Lightoller has been one of the most intriguing figures to me; being through 4 shipwrecks and fire, also living through Titanic, WWI, and Dunkirk, his story of hope and survival is worth a movie. Herbert Pitman: despite suffering from seasickness, this son of a farmer had a more than half-century long seafaring career, retiring in 1946. He started his career as an apprentice, then a deck officer and when he could not pass the eye test due to colour blindness at one eye, White Star Line made him a purser and he stayed in this position for the rest of his career. Pitman served in both world wars on troop ships; when he retired, he was a Lieutenant-Commander of the Royal Naval Reserves and was created an MBE in 1948, in recognition of his long service in the merchant marine.

Joseph Boxhall: he had a very happy marriage with his wife Majory and they were very fond of their dogs. This may be a substitute to children given that they do not have children together but anyways if anyone asked why you haven’t had kids yet, tell them about the Boxhalls and their doggos 🐶

Harold Lowe: he was a hobby artist who works with watercolours, as well as wood carvings. This may come across as surprising but you should not be surprised given that his father was an artist. There are a few of Harold’s drawings exists today, including a sketch of Titanic (in which he messed up with the funnels). Oh yes, he was also in the church choir as well when he was young.

James Moody: During his South American runs, he would sometimes flirt with female passengers with his very patchy Spanish and well, sometimes he just dropped in some swear words by accident. Yeah, in case you wondered, he’s not that shy as you thought after watching Ed’s portrayal of our daring Jim in the 1997 movie (the real Jim was quite cheeky actually).

Hugh McElroy: as the ship’s purser, he was there to take care of passengers’ needs (like he’s basically the “manager”). From parrot-tending (yes, and he trained the parrot to do morse code) to organising marriage ceremonies for runaway couples, he’s there to try to help. And as a result, he was a very popular man on the ship and passengers were honoured to share a table with him.

you ever have a dream

that while you're dreaming it you're convinced that you've had it before, it's hilarious, and it's something you should remember when you finish waking up so you can share it with friends

and then you type it out, and it's just the office but a) they're selling frivalous insurance for things like getting snowed in in the equivalent of miami b) there are dragons and magic people and at one point the series is derailed underwater because the volcano dragon god just decided to nuke the city c) all you can remember is the michael scott analogue, played by will ferrell, being unintentionally racist to black people in the cast playing black stereotypes (mad black woman who cheats because she can't stand her husband working for a loser, literally the dad from family matters, replaced by literally the uncle from fresh prince) and trying to force the word "teust" (pronounced toysh because he's illiterate) into being a thing and it not working. Then halfway through the show will ferrell leaves for actually steve carell, but he's playing a much more subdued michael scott analogue who plays more into anxious and cringe inducing comedy of errors dipshittery from stupidity than an obnoxious yelly delusional guy, and the show becomes "2d" to save on sets because after the dragon nukes shit the show is set in the underwater portion of the city which is just a bunch of buildings on a sea cliff

stylistically people and characters are randomly live action, 2d, and 3d, with kind of a paper mario thing going on.

there was also a black kid on the team who was "obviously just hired because the michael analogue thought he'd be good diversity because he "speaks urban"" because that's how will ferrell's character treats him but he's the most effectual person in the organization by far and just happens to speak AAE. He quits the show early on (his actor goes to college) to open his own used game/card store. Which is where I was watching the show from. It was actually an n64 game?

the finale when the dragons try to destroy the whole world had a bunch of cameos tying both ends of the show together. the woman who cheated and her daughter reconcile, there's a love confessional between what i now gather were the pam and jim analogues, etc.

then i remember dreaming about how i should write this down but i'm too tired to. and started dreaming about making a zelda fangame in the style of the oracle games, and thought i could keep the weird show thing in memory by using the city as my overworld map, which was going to have revisiting dungeons for a second level boss fight be a thing. Around the corner was a japanese town where part of the plot was a girl getting killed in a movie theater and you having to exercise an angry spirit. which i hallucinated my grandma waking me up to tell me her sister told me that she "stopped that demon for [me]" but it was phrased as laundry somehow, which is wild because even in the context of the dream we both knew that aunt is dead. And i apologized to her for being judgmental towards in life.

Top ten shows I binged in Quarantine

WARNING MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS IF YOU WANNA WATCH ANY OF THESE SHOWS 

10. Sex and the City 

This show came out I was born so I didn’t get to watch it while it was airing but quarantine was the perfect time to watch it! It’s the first thing I wanted to watch since I would hear a lot about it on the internet. I have to say it did not disappoint. The chemistry between the four main girls was amazing, and I really enjoyed their friendship. It was fun watching them grow from the very first episode to the last (I ignore the movies they are not canon to me sorry about it). I got watch Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha fall in love, out of love, accept themselves, and take on the city and have sex of course! 

9. The Office

The first time I heard about The Office was from my older brother as it is his favorite show. All of my friends watched it and would tell me to but I had no way to so. When we got netflix during quarantine it was one of the first things I wanted to watch. I binged this summer and it made me feel closer to my brother as I understood his humor more. The show is hilarious and the cast had great charisma together. It was cool to see where actors like Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Craig Robinson and many others got their start. I loved watching Jim and Pam’s love story, and Dwight is definitely my favorite character. Overall I understand all the hype around this show. 

8. I am not okay with this

I watched this show during summer as well, and holy crap what a show! I was already fan of Sohpia Lilis, and Wyatt Oleff from IT but omg I was so impressed with them after this show! The plot is an interesting one and that ending was insane, so sad there won’t be a season two but what can you do? 

7. Hollywood

Definitely one of my fave shows of all time! I’ve seen it about 5 or 6 times. It is a story about old Hollywood but it’s not how you think it is as it a rewrite of it. It was written and created by Ryan Murphy who also created one of my other fave shows of all time Glee. The show has solid cast such as Darren Criss, Jim Parsons, Dylan Mcdermott, and Holland Taylor. The show will make you laugh, cry and wish you lived in old Hollywood! It will also give you a better understanding of how Hollywood works. 

6. Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist

This show came out in January but I did not start watching it until the first week of quarantine so Idk if I counts as a binge but oh well. This show is so amazing. It is about a girl who can hear people’s thoughts through song, and she has to figure out a way to help them. It also helps that the show stars Pitch Perfect’s Skylar Astin, and Glee’s Alex Newell. The story is solid, and the song selection is definitely unique with songs from all sorts of genre’s, era’s, and artists. 

5. Outer Banks

Oh my god what a great show! It came out in April or May I think but I didn’t watch it until September. The show is about a boy named John B who lost his father at sea and now he and his friends are looking for the treasure his dad was chasing. It has friendship, romance, adventure, and betrayal. This show really made me miss hanging out with my friends. I can’t wait for season 2!

4. Cobra Kai

This show is apart of The Karate Kid series which I have been a fan of since I was a kid. It came out two years ago on Youtube Red and I wanted to watch it then but had no way to. When it got added to netflix this summer I immediately stopped what I was watching to watch it. It follows the bully from the Karate Kid series Johnny Lawrence. He opens up his childhood dojo to help a kid named Miguel with bullies. Eventually more kids start to join, and Danny Larusso the protagonist of The Karate Kid movies opens up his childhood dojo. The show follows new kids including the kids of Danny and Johnny.

3. Dead To Me

I watched this show after season two came out. I was really impressed with this show! The plot really shocked me and I couldn’t tear my eyes away. Linda Cardellini, and Christina Applegate are the leads of this show. Christina Applegate’s husband died in a tragic accident, she meets Linda Cardellini and forms a friendship with her. That is all I will say about this show.

2. Julie and The Phantoms

This show I just finished today, and OH MY FUCKING GOD! This show is a masterpiece and deserves all the hype. It is directed by Kenny Ortega who directed the iconic HSM Series and many more. It’s about a girl whose mother died, and she lost her passion for music. She meets these three ghost who died before they got their big break. They help her find her passion for music and form a band with her. The show will make you laugh, sing, and surprisingly cry. The music is amazing, and the main characters have such amazing chemistry musically, and friendship wise. This show will make you feel good, and look up all the songs on youtube when it’s over! 100/100 recommend. 

1. Euphoria

I LITERALLY HAVE NO WORDS FOR THIS SHOW OH MY GOD! I binged it at the end of summer, and it is literally one of the best show’s I’ve ever seen. It follows Rue a teenage girl who’s had drug abuse problems since she was thirteen. She just got back from rehab and meets this girl named Jules. They become best friends, and eventually more. I’m not gonna give to much of this show away but oh my god If you have not watched it you should. However it may trigging to some viewers as there is nudity, drug use, physical abuse, and violence. The show follows more characters than just Rue but she is the main. Zendaya definitely deserved the Emmy for this show!

10 TV Shows to Binge Watch During Quarantine

Hey Everyone! I hope you all are well! I know this Quarantine is starting to become a lot for most of us and we are looking for a way to get through these next couple weeks. I thought I would make a list of 10 TV shows I’ve watched before, have watched during this Quarantine, or am currently watching. Hopefully this gives you guys some TV shows you can watch if you’re a little bored right now. Xoxo💛

1. Gossip Girl

    Gossip Girl is a TV show that follows the lives of rich teenagers who live on the upper east side of nyc. But, this show has one teenager that’s not from the upper east side but from, Brooklyn. We see how Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley) is seen as a outcast even as he gains more friends. We also see the characters battle their own personal issues and grow through high school and college. This show is a good one to binge because you will get very attached to the characters.

2. Schitt’s Creek

   Schitt’s Creek is a comedy that follows the Rose’s, a once rich family. The Rose’s have everything taken from them because of their business manager. The Rose’s are left with only what they could grab and a small town Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy) bought for his son David Rose (Daniel Levy) as a joke, called Schitt’s Creek. This town is far from the Rose’s normal life. A small town in which they live in a dirty old motel. The adjustment to their new life is easier from some but, eventually we see most of The Rose’s get used to Schitt’s Creek. This show is hilarious and everyone I know who’s seen it would agree!

3. How to Get Away With Murder

   How to Get Away With Murder follows 5 students; Connor (Jack Falahee), Michaela (Aja Naomi King), Asher (Matt McGorry), Laurel (Karla Souza) and Wes (Alfred Enoch). Through getting their law degrees. But they aren’t just learning how to get their degrees but also learning how to get away with murder. Who’s helping them? Their professor Annalise Keating (Viola Davis)? This show is full of suspense and will keep you watching.

4. Beverly Hills, 90210

   I know you may be asking yourself why I would recommend a TV show from the 90′s. Well it’s just that good. Beverly Hills 90210, follows two teenagers Brandon (Jason Priestly) and Brenda Walsh (Shannen Doherty), who have recently moved to Beverly Hills from Minnesota. They have to adjust to their new lives, as it’s much different than their old lives. Throughout this show, they handle real topics that will always affect teens no matter the decade. A plus of watching this show is it has 3 spin offs, Melrose Place (Hulu), 90210 (??), and BH90210 (Hulu). Notable star: Luke Perry (yes Archie’s dad in Riverdale) RIP.

5. The Office

   How could you have a list of TV shows to binge without the office. If you are one of the people out there who haven’t seen it and you have a slight interest in it, then now’s the time to watch. The Office follows people who work at a paper company, Dunder Mifflin. It follows them almost like a reality TV show would. Documenting their personal and professional lives. This show is comedy gold. Even without Michael Scott (Steve Carell) this show always makes you laugh or cry. And you will get attached to each character and at the end of the show see it as though you have watched your friends grow up. I think my life would be completely different if I hadn’t seen this show.

6. The Real Housewives of New York City

   RHONY follows women through their personal and professional lives. It shows what it’s like to be a housewife or not and still have some sort of job. There’s also A LOT of drama, sometimes it’s funny/sad to watch grown women fight about things teenagers would. If you want to get into reality TV this is the place to start!

Notable “Wives”: Bethenny Frankel (Owns Skinny Girl), Ramona Singer (The crazy lady with the crazy eyes during the fashion show), and Sonja Morgan (Was once married to a Morgan).

7. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills

RHOBH follows women through their personal and professional lives. Like New York, it shows what it’s like to be a housewife or not and still have some sort of a job. What’s different about Beverly Hills? Most “wives” are actresses, models, or own their own clothing store/brand. And there’s a lot of more drama cause these women are a lot more crazy.

Notable “Wives”: Lisa Vanderpumup (Has a TV show Vanderpump rules and own many restruants in LA and Vegas), Kyle Richards (Was in Halloween), and Lisa Rinna (From Melrose Place and works at QVC).

8. Outer Banks

   This show follows teenagers who live in the Outer Banks. Some rich and some poor. Who go on a mission to find gold and an old ship after Jonh B (Chase Stokes) gets tired of wondering if his dad is dead or alive, we believe most of the season that his dad got lost at sea. During their mission to find the gold and the old ship, they get into lots of trouble. Which then leads to show to become a murder investigation. This show is great to binge but at some points is really confusing/dumb.

9. You

   I know most people have seen this show but, if you haven’t it’s a great binge watch. You follows Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) who becomes obsessed with this girl Beck after she stumble’s into his book store one day. He becomes so crazy about her that he stalks her on all forms of social media to find things out about her and even goes to extreme measures to get her to become his girlfriend. Throughout season one you will be left scared at the end of each episode for poor Beck. But will also think how was she so dumb to miss the major red flags. And don’t think season two is any different. Love is just a dumb as Beck. This show made me wonder what these girls were thinking. Moral to the story ladies, sometimes guys are creepy and if a guy creeps around your house after dark or seems to know more about your life than you told him, DO NOT MAKE HIM YOUR BOYFRIEND.

10. The Society

   The Society follows a group of teenagers who leave on a field trip after their town experiences and bad smell that no one can seem to get rid of. When the return from their field trip at night due to bad weather, they return to a ghost town. No parents, no siblings, or animals, and they can’t even leave town; it’s blocked off but a grown in forest than leads nowhere. These teenagers must learn how to adjust to their new situation. And because most of these kids are 17 or 18 they don’t know how to run a town which creates a lot of drama. This show will leave with you with a lot of questions. Netflix confirmed a season 2 but with this whole pandemic we are unsure when our burning questions will be answered.

Vistas ‘The Morning Show’ y ‘Dickinson’, ¿merece la pena abonarse a Apple TV+?

Mucho se ha hablado en los últimos meses del lanzamiento de la nueva plataforma VOD con contenido original de Apple. Ahora que al fin se ha estrenado, la gran pregunta es si verdaderamente merece la pena pagar cinco euros al mes por acceder… y siento decir que por ahora yo no estoy muy convencida. Para ellos es un orgullo presentarse como la única plataforma que solo ofrece contenido original, lo que hace que sea muy poco rentable pagar una suscripción para tan poca oferta. 

De las cuatro series disponibles (a mayores hay tres series infantiles) he visto dos: Dickinson y The Morning Show. Esta última es sin duda el buque insignia de la casa y la que más promoción ha tenido estas últimas semanas. Las malas críticas me han hecho huir de See, cuya baza principal es Jason Momoa pero que parece que no tiene mayor interés. La cuarta es For All Mankind, una serie de astronautas con tintes de Mad Men a la que sin duda daré una oportunidad. Pero centrémonos en las dos que he visto.

The Morning Show cuenta con muchas caras conocidas (Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Steve Carell o Mark Duplass, entre otros) y un presupuesto millonario, supongo que para pagar a todas sus estrellas ya que, por lo demás, los quince millones de dólares que cuesta cada episodio no están justificados. Por ahora están disponibles los tres primeros capítulos (el resto irá apareciendo a razón de uno por semana para intentar atar a los suscriptores) y sin duda la decisión no ha sido tomada al azar, ya que la serie empieza a encontrarse a sí misma en el tercer episodio.

The Morning Show es el programa matinal preferido de los estadounidenses, pero todo se tambalea cuando su presentador (Steve Carell) es acusado por varias mujeres de conducta sexual inapropiada y es automáticamente despedido del programa. Alex (Jennifer Aniston), copresentadora de la emisión, es la encargada de anunciar la noticia a los espectadores y de intentar reflotar la reputación del programa y de la cadena.

Viendo el resultado final podría decirse que esta serie, que quiere ser de Aaron Sorkin pero se queda en eso, un intento, era una buena idea sobre el papel pero se queda corta en la ejecución. Y eso tiene un solo responsable: Apple. Al contrario que Netflix, que da libertad total a sus creadores (para lo bueno y para lo malo), Apple pidió corrección en todas sus series. Nada de religión, política o actitudes que puedan ofender a alguien. Y claro, eso nos deja una serie a medio cocer, con tramas sobreexplicadas en la que no se deja nada a la imaginación del espectador y que podría dar muchísimo más de sí con un tema tan actual como el del #MeToo, pero que es incapaz de explotar todo su potencial por culpa de ese aura de buenismo que lo impregna todo.

Otro problema de la serie es que huele a principios de los 2000, a cadena generalista en la que decir fuck es la mayor transgresión permitida y que busca gustar a todo el mundo, cosa que es imposible. Es una pena que no hayan sabido (o podido, o querido) exprimir más a sus personajes, que se hayan quedado en los clichés a pesar de contar con un elenco impresionante que, todo hay que decirlo, pone todo de su parte para salvar el barco. Pero no es suficiente. La serie estrella de la cadena es por ahora decepcionante, esperemos que mejore en los episodios restantes.

En la otra cara de la moneda está Dickinson -primera serie como creadora de Alena Smith, guionista de The Affair o The Newsroom- un coming-of-age del que es imposible no enamorarse. Una serie feminista, irónica, llena de humor pero con toques dramáticos y unos protagonistas que, a pesar de vivir en el siglo XIX, tienen comportamientos que podrían recordarnos (solo en algunos momentos) a adolescentes actuales. Un retrato de la sociedad norteamericana de la época y del lugar que ocupaba la mujer en ella vista a través de los ojos de la poetisa Emily Dickinson y su familia.

Me parece un gran acierto haber fichado a la cantante y actriz Hailee Steinfeld (Pitch Perfect 2) para el papel de Emily. No solo su interpretación es impecable, sino que su fama va sin duda a atraer a muchos jóvenes, que son al fin y al cabo el público potencial de la serie. Jane Krakowski está maravillosa (una vez más) en el papel de Mrs Dickinson, madre de Emily, que vive con desesperación la actitud de su hija mayor ante la vida. 

Visualmente impecable, episodios cortos, tramas entretenidas y un uso espectacular de la música -consiguiendo que música actual funcione como un reloj suizo en una serie ambientada en el siglo XIX- hacen de Dickinson una serie muy disfrutable y muy recomendable que se ve de sobra en los siete días de prueba gratuitos que ofrece Apple TV+.

¿Conseguirá Apple hacerse su hueco entre los grandes con tan poco contenido y huyendo de los riesgos creativos? Solo el tiempo lo dirá, pero personalmente tengo mis dudas.

Ben is Back!

Plot!

“Ben is Back” tells the story of drug addiction affecting the Burns family through their son Ben who shows up on Christmas Eve on ‘break’ from rehab. Tension immediately surfaces. Similar to ‘Beautiful Boy’, if you trade out Steve Carell for Julia Roberts and Timothee Chalamet for Lucas Hedges, you get a very familiar story with two different outcomes. There’s a very interesting family dynamic in this story simply because Julia Roberts character, Holly Burns, is in a interracial marriage with Courtney B. Vance’s character, Neal, that include two offspring. When Ben shows up, Neal immediately takes charge of the situation and makes it known that it’s ‘too soon’ for Ben to visit. You see him rise up as protector of the family and clearly reiterates that if Ben were black, he would indeed not be in rehab, but rather in jail or on the streets. The plot really thickens when the family comes home from church service to find their house broken into and their dog Ponce, missing. This leads to Holly and Ben’s long search for the lost pup that leads to numerous obstacles courses all over the town. Through this scavenger hunt, various revelations about Ben’s past come to light and Holly becomes more aware just how deep into the drug scene Ben really was. Through this desperate journey, mother and son become separated but eventually reunite at the end of the film. I remember holding my breath in the last scene of the film and having uneasy sense of closure as the film ended. 

Performance(s)!

Julia Roberts- Julia Roberts, as always, delivers a brilliant performance as the emotionally torn mother, Holly Burns. When you she grieves, you grieve with her, when she’s hopeful and conveys that, you’re uplifted, when she screams and yells and tries to protect her children, you want to stand in the gap with her. It’s very easy to explore empathy with the character she displays on screen. In the first scene in which Ben returns, you see the flood of emotions take over Holly as she anxiously rushes to embrace her son. Her character has to protect and love all her children. Julia Roberts executes this with grace, vulnerability, and love.

Lucas Hedges- Another favorite performance from Lucas Hedges. He does a solid job in every performance I’ve seen him in. “Manchester by the Sea”, “Boy Erased”, “Lady Bird”, are all great performances by him. In this film, I detected a slight lisp, but I can’t tell if maybe that’s how he talks or if that was a character choice. IF it was a character choice, then it was brilliant, because he comes off even more vulnerable and even more in need of a parental figure to guide him. You see the struggle in his face and emotions when he makes it back home for an unexpected visit and a variety of options are explored by his family as to what should happen next. When he confronts his demons all over town while looking for the family’s dog, you step back into his past and see the courage it takes to encounter these people and situations all over again. Overall, he does a great job. :)

Poignant moment(s)!

When at the mall, Ben runs into a friend who he hasn’t seen in a while and the friend exclaims, ‘I thought you were dead!’. Can you imagine someone saying this to you? Wow!

Also at the mall, you discover Ben’s introduction to drugs and where the addiction began. It’s pretty remarkable. 

At an AA meeting, Ben runs into a girl and she reveals that Ben used to be her dealer. He has no recollection of ever being her dealer. :(

Julia Roberts takes her son to a cemetery so Ben can pick the spot where he wants to be buried because that’s where he’ll end up if he doesn’t change his ways. “Where do you want me to bury you?” is repeated over and over again to Ben. 

Overall!

It’s a great film with strong acting and a very vulnerable story. To see!

What it’s about: A young man struggles with drug addiction while his father tries to help him.

How I saw them: We should get used to seeing Lucas Hedges (age 21) and Timothee Chalamet (age 22) in great movies for many years to come. Hedges (“Manchester by the Sea”) and Chalamet (“Call Me by Your Name”) already have Academy Award nominations in acting categories to their credit, and those probably won’t be their last. They seem to show up in a lot of great movies. In fact, both played key roles in 2017’s critically acclaimed “Lady Bird.”

Now they have starring roles in similar movies released within a week from each other, Hedges in “Boy Erased” and Chalamet in “Beautiful Boy.” Both give us the kind of powerful, movie-carrying performances we have already come to expect from them in movies that are important if less than flawless.

Both films, based on true stories, center on young men whose fathers are trying to help them, but in starkly different ways.

Hedges plays Jared Eamons, an 18-year-old in Arkansas who throughout high school lives the kind of life his father (Russell Crowe) has set up for him. He plays sports and has a cheerleader girlfriend. He works at his father’s car dealership, and it is made clear that he will be taking over the business someday. And he attends the church where his father preaches.

But his father’s plans are derailed when Jared goes off to college. He makes friends with another student, Henry (Joe Alwyn), and they become running partners. But one night, Henry stays the night in Jared’s dorm room and forces himself on his friend sexually. This leaves Jared confused, and the confusion worsens when Henry, in the guise of a school counselor, tells Jared’s parents that Jared was the perpetrator. Jared, pressured by his father, admits that he “thinks about men.”

The father, citing his faith, can’t accept this, and his wife (Nicole Kidman) dutifully goes along with a plan to send their son to a religious-based conversion therapy facility. It is, in many ways, a horrible place, and Jared struggles with whether to rebel against the facility’s leaders (actor/director Joel Edgerton and Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, in a truly creepy role) or “fake it and make it” so that he is not admitted to the facility on a long-term basis. He also has been told by his father he will be disowned if he lives a homosexual lifestyle.

The conversion process is difficult to watch, as the young people face mental and physical abuse and seem generally unhappy. If you have never questioned the purpose of religion, you might after viewing “Boy Erased.” Fourteen states in the U.S. have banned conversion therapy, but it still happens, with parents and religious leaders subscribing to the theory that you can “treat” homosexuality the way you can treat mental health issues and drug addiction. Edgerton does a good job of not overtly condemning the process or the people behind it, but what happens on screen speaks for itself.

Chalamet, as Nicolas Sheff, also has a father who wants to “cure” him, but in “Beautiful Boy” the issue is drug abuse. Sheff is a popular, attractive and talented young artist who also is troubled. At a young age, he starts trying drugs and finds he prefers being high to reality. His drug use quickly overwhelms him, and while still in high school he is admitted to a drug treatment facility. A pattern familiar to those who have dealt with addicts is established. Nicolas gets clean, says his drug-using days are behind him but then relapses. He keeps hitting bottom, but his bottom keeps sinking lower and lower.

Unlike Jared’s father in “Boy Erased,” Chalamet, at least at first, has the unconditional loving support of his father, David Sheff (Steve Carell, in a strong performance that matches Chalamet’s). In fact, David Sheff, by all measures a loving and sympathetic father, tries too hard to help Nicolas. His efforts begin to smother Nicolas, and they become a detriment to himself, his wife and their young children. He eventually learns what everyone trying to help an addict must accept: You can’t fix the addict.

Like Jared’s “conversion” in “Boy Erased,” Nicolas’ downward spiral in “Beautiful Boy” is tough to watch. And while “Boy Erased” gives us at least some resolution and hope in the end, the only semblance of a happy ending in “Beautiful Boy” comes after the final scene fades out.

Both movies benefit from strong leading performances that help cover up shortcomings. “Beautiful Boy” director Felix Van Groeningen takes a page from Christopher Nolan’s playbook with a series of flashbacks and flashbacks within flashbacks, to the point that following along can be difficult despite the repetitive nature of Nicolas’ relapses. The movie also has an odd but sometimes obvious soundtrack, with artists ranging from Neil Young to Nirvana to Sigur Ros to Aphex Twin. “Boy Erased” stacks its most emotional moments on top of each other toward the end of the movie, perhaps lessening the impact of each, if only slightly. It also starts veering into predictable territory as it heads toward its ending.

But those are minor complaints given each film’s impressive performances. Especially those of their young leading actors.

My score: “Boy Erased,” 85 out of 100; “Beautiful Boy,” 71 out of 100

Should you see them? Yes. Both can be a difficult watch, but they are important films that likely will lead to much thought and discussion.

 H: Tu personaje en Beautiful Boy es una parte bastante intensa. ¿Eres alguien que se mantiene en el personaje cuando se corta la cámara, o eres capaz de encenderlo y apagarlo?

T: Mi parte en Beautiful Boy se quedó conmigo mucho más tiempo del que pensé. Creo que una de las trampas de este rol, especialmente como un actor joven nervioso, era apoyarse en su la seriedad. No quería intentar ser tan duro conmigo mismo como fuera posible, pensando que eso era lo que se necesitaría para hacerlo bien. Después del ultimo día de rodaje, tuve el camino más extraño a casa. Ni siquiera lo viví, Nic y David lo hicieron, pero aún me sentía realmente afectado, agotado y un poco devastado. La película no es decepcionante, porque es realmente redentora y optimista, pero se sintió como un puñetazo en el estómago.

T: [Risas otra vez] Esa es la escena más incómoda para ver con tus padres en todo el mundo. Mi pobre padre...

 H: Estoy seguro que él lo ha hecho también. ¿Eres cercano a tu familia, cierto?

T: Si, lo soy. ¿Tu también?

 H: Si, algunas veces mis padres van a mi gira y siempre es lindo tenerlos alrededor. El último par de años han sido locos para ti. ¿Qué rol cumplieron tus padres en mantener algo de sentido de normalidad a tu alrededor?

T: Creo que la cosa más preciosa que tuve de mis padres - y que trató de darles de regreso tanto como puedo - es su amor y apoyo. Espero que esto no suene cursi, pero es la verdad. En tu adolescencia, a principios de los veinte años, de repente te das cuenta de que tus padres son humanos. Eso no significa que no reciba geniales consejos de ellos, porque lo hago. Pero llegas a una cierta edad y tomas control de tu propia vida. Es realmente increíble que alguien como tú, quien ha estado haciendo esto por un buen tiempo, tiene esa objetividad y habilidad de tomar un paso atrás y escribir en ese diario. Tomarse un tiempo para la autorreflexión es importante.

 H: Durante mucho tiempo, cuando haces algo que va bien, tus pensamientos inmediatamente van a “¿Qué es lo siguiente?" Todo se mueve tan rápido que a menudo no tienes la oportunidad de parar y pensar "mierda, esto fue realmente increíble". Acabo de terminar mi gira y es genial dar un paso atrás y pensar está no es la vida real, es realmente solo el increíble trabajo que tengo/hago.

T: ¿Son esos momentos de objetividad incrementales? ¿O tratas de reservar un poco de tiempo para hacer eso?

 H: Descubrí que solo pasan cuando tienen que pasar. Tengo mucho de ello cuando estoy conduciendo. Puedo estar escuchando algo, y vuelvo a cuando tenía 12 o algo así y pienso "Mierda si mi yo de 12 años pudiera verme ahora". Creo que es realmente importante tener esos momentos porque, si no es así, existe la expectativa de que la vida tiene que ser genial y creo que eso es muy peligroso.

T: Eso me aterra y todavía no estoy seguro como navegar mejor en esto. Por lo que estoy agradecido de que crecí en Nueva York. Pasó tanto tiempo en Nueva York como me sea posible. A menudo me estoy aficionando por Kid Cudi, porque es de Cleveland, y tengo diez veces más respeto por la idea de venir de algún lugar que no sea LA o Nueva York, o cualquiera de estos centros de la industria, y lanzar tu carrera, Parece una montaña increíble para escalar.

 H: A veces en los programas de televisión pareces realmente nervioso, pero en la pantalla [cine] eres un actor extremadamente confiado. ¿Encuentras más fácil hacer a alguien más que ser tú mismo?

T: Oh, esas es una gran pregunta. Creo que el veneno para los jóvenes en público, en entornos sociales o en la vida en general, es una suposición propia, y creo que eso es lo que me pone nervioso en los programas de entrevistas. Soy nuevo en todo esto, así que me pongo a mí mismo en los zapatos de la audiencia y me imagino viendo a este irreconocible chico tratan de hablar seriamente sobre películas y parpadeando ante eso.

 H: ¿Te sientes presionado para ser político en esta época?

T: No sé si es político, lo que siento es una responsabilidad difícil. Estuve hablando sobre esto con Steve Carell, acerca de cómo había una complacencia general en las generaciones anteriores de que todo iba bien y que aumentaba las apuestas muy alto. La gente de nuestra edad está mucho más comprometida, y creo que eso es algo bueno.

 H: Estamos viviendo en un tiempo donde es imposible no ser consciente sobre que está pasando en el mundo. La sociedad nunca ha sido tan divisiva. Es importante pararse por lo que creemos que está bien. Me encantaría que mis puntos de vista se reflejen en la música que hago y en las cosas que hago. Esa es una muy poderosa forma en la que podemos usar nuestras voces. Creo que por mucho tiempo las personas creían "Lo que haga yo no importa" pero la revolución viene de pequeños actos, y ahora la gente se está dando cuenta de que eso es lo que provoca un cambio real.

T: Vivimos realmente en un tiempo inspiracional, porque muchas de estas voces -Personas como Emma Gonzales por ejemplo- son realmente jóvenes. Son personas de nuestra edad quienes van a tener que afrontar todo esto, y como lo están afrontando ahora. Fue interesante estar en los Golden Globes y en los Oscars el año pasado - porque hubo una gran tensión en la auto celebración, que es de lo que se tratan las ceremonias de premiación, cuando tanta gente sufre y tanta gente tiene quejas. No solo pequeñas quejas, sino quejas legítimas.

 H: Hoy hay muchas más maneras para nosotros de estar comprometido. Creo que ese es el significado positivo de las redes sociales, pero también allí hay mucho de lo que encuentro muy peligroso de las redes sociales. ¿Estoy interesado en oír que es lo que crees? Lo bueno y lo malo…

T: A fines de la década del 2000, cuando ocurrió la primavera árabe en Egipto, hubo un verdadero optimismo en torno a Internet y las posibilidades de las redes sociales. Pero en los últimos tres o cuatro años, casi ha habido una segunda ola de redes sociales donde las personas solo escuchan lo que quieren escuchar y solo gritan en su cámara de eco. Mi viejo compañero de casa me dijo que leyó una entrevista con el creador de internet, donde dicen que están obsesionados con lo que se ha convertido y desprecian la negatividad y la desinformación que pueden imbuir. En un nivel más micro y en mi experiencia, las redes sociales son realmente difíciles de navegar porque lo último que quiero hacer como artista es crear un vacío. Pero si lees los comentarios, te estás abriendo a un verdadero daño propio. Envidio por momentos en que la gente realmente cerró los ojos y no se escapó de una pantalla. Es la caricatura de alguien en una fiesta que se desplaza por Tetris

 H: En un nivel personal, siento un notable cambio en cuan feliz soy cuando no estoy en las redes sociales. Alguien lo describió para mí como una fiesta en una casa, donde están estas personas que son geniales y 23 personas que no tan agradables. Solo no irías a esta fiesta, ¿Cierto? Eso resume mis sentimientos sobre las redes sociales. Entró. Veo a los amigos que quiero ver y me voy.

T: ¿Eso fue intuitivo para ti?

 H: Es algo que aprendí con el tiempo. Especialmente a salir, porqué cuando empiezas, estas animado en dar tanto como puedas. Pero se vuelve en separar tu trabajo del resto de tu vida. Darte cuenta de que hay cosas que necesitas mantener para ti mismo y cosas que no tienes que compartir con nadie. Lo mantiene todo un poco más agradable.

T: Se trata de tener conciencia de sí mismo acerca de su entrada digital, así como de la salida.

 H: Exacto. Estoy muy consciente de que, si vas a las redes sociales, y buscas, vas a encontrar lo que sea que estás buscando. Si buscas por malo comentarios, vas a encontrar malos comentarios. Pero las personas lo siguen haciendo. Es como una extraña auto tortura.

T: Es masoquista

 H: Solía hacerlo cuando empecé. Ahora ya no lo hago más, y siento este notable cambio de cuan feliz soy, lo que es agradable. Pero no estoy destrozando las redes sociales. Creo que las redes sociales también hacen mucho bien y es importante notarlo y crecer con ello.

T: En definitiva, no hay vuelta atrás. Es tal como es. Así que…  ¿Cómo fue trabajar en Dunkirk? Tuve un pequeño rol en interestelar y estaba tan emocionado de trabajar con Christopher Nolan. Él es mi cineasta favorito.

 H: Siempre he sido un gran fan de Christopher Nolan también... cuando él estaba sentado en el fondo de la habitación mientras adicionaba, me sentí muy suertudo de incluso estar en esa habitación. Dunkirk fue extraño porque fue mi primera película, así que no tengo nada con que compararla.

T: Parecía un paisaje tan árido. No parecían unas vacaciones en absoluto.

 H: No, no lo fueron. Cuando me dijeron que íbamos a hacer una película en la playa, tuve muchas ideas diferentes. Definitivamente disfrute hacer de alguien más. Ame estar tan lejos de mi zona de confort. Ame estar en el set y ser el chico quien no tenía idea de que estaba haciendo. Realmente disfrute eso.

T: Oh hombre, realmente espero que actúes en algo más. Porque, no sé si significa algo viniendo de mí, pero creo que estuviste malditamente excelente en esa película.

 H: Muchas gracias.

T: Esa película es realmente increíble. Al mirarla, todavía pienso, “Oh hombre, ¡espero que Harry no piense que todos los sets de películas son barcos de la segunda guerra mundial!"

 H: Todos me dijeron que en lo que sea que trabaje después, será un paseo por el parque en comparación con Dunkirk, pero lo disfruté. Pensando sobre donde está el mundo hoy, ¿Sientes una responsabilidad como un actor de representar una nueva forma de masculinidad en la pantalla? El concepto de masculinidad ha cambiado tanto desde que fuimos creciendo.

T: Sabes que es realmente gracioso, iba a hacerte a ti una versión de esta pregunta, pero me preocupaba que me diera demasiado crédito pensar que podría hacer un cambio así. Pero, si tú me das esa licencia entonces puedo decir absolutamente. Es una de las razones por las que estoy tan feliz de estar al teléfono contigo porque mientras crecíamos tuvimos algunas personas para admirar, pero no era tan obvio. Personas como Lil B -espero que las personas no rueden los ojos leyendo esto- fue realmente impactante para mí porque el realmente borro esas líneas como músico. Me encantaría saber que los roles que estoy interpretando están instigando el cambio de alguna manera. ¿Cómo expreso esto? Creo que hay algo que escribir sobre esto por alguien más inteligente que yo... Quiero decir que puedes ser lo que quieras ser. No hay una noción específica, ni tamaño de jean, ni camisa muscular, ni afectación, ni ceja, ni disolución, ni uso de drogas en el que tengas que participar para ser masculino. Es emocionante. Es valiente nuevo mundo. Quizás es por las redes sociales, quizás es porque quien mierda sabe qué, pero hay una verdadera emoción de nuestra generación por hacer las cosas de una manera nueva... ¿Podría estar muy curioso por ver qué tienes que decir al respecto?

 H: No crecí en un mundo de hombres. Crecí con mi mama y mi hermana. Pero definitivamente creo que, en los últimos dos años, me he convertido mucho más contento con quien soy. Creo que hay tanta masculinidad en ser vulnerable y permitirte a ti mismo en ser femenino, y estoy muy cómodo con eso. Creciendo ni siquiera sabes que significan estas coas. Tienes esta idea sobre qué es ser masculino y creces y experimentas más el mundo, y te conviertes mucho más cómodo con quién eres. Hoy es muy fácil abrazar la masculinidad en tantas maneras diferentes. Yo definitivamente encontré -atreves de la música, escribir, hablar con amigos y ser abierto de mente- que la mayoría de las veces cuando me siento más confiado es cuando me permito a mí mismo ser vulnerable. Es algo que definitivamente trato y hago.

T: Eso es algo realmente hermoso e inspirador, y ciertamente es volver a sentirse cómodo en el caos y creando en locura. Es casi un alto ser vulnerable. Realmente entiendo eso. Creo que se puede lograr en el arte, pero también en la intimidad. Es el sentimiento más loco para lograr esa vulnerabilidad. Si nosotros teniendo esta conversación, de una manera infinitesimal, podemos ayudar a alguien, un chico, una chica, darse cuenta que ser vulnerable no es una debilidad, ni una barrera social. No significa que seas loco o muy emocionado, solo eres humano, lo cual creo que es algo a lo que se refiere tu música y espero que mis películas también. Los seres humanos son complejos; necesitamos sentir muchas cosas. No somos homogéneos.

 H: No es una línea recta por seguro... Un par de cosas para ti... Los últimos pares de años han sido locos. ¿Cómo lo encuentras? ¿Te estás divirtiendo?

T: Amigo, siento tanta gratitud. Le digo mucho esto a mi papá y él se divierte de mi porque yo nunca suelo hablar así, pero veo personas de nuestra edad y cuan fuerte ellos hacen el mundo y me inspira. Tres años atrás, Estaba nervioso porque la gente hablaba de que las redes sociales afectaban la capacidad de atención y cómo ya nadie podía sentarse, y el arte y el cine eran reliquias. Pero en realidad siento que esto es urgente. Y por cualquier jodida razón, ahora tengo la capacidad de elegir a qué darle vida. Ahora mismo, estoy trabajando en Little Woman en Boston con Greta Gerwig, Saoirse Ronan y Emma Watson y me pellizco a mí mismo para ser esta mosca en la pared para esta narrativa legendaria. ¿Obtuviste un descanso en los primeros años? ¿O fue bastante intenso?

 H: Fueron bastante intensos. Solo en los últimos dos años fue que realmente tuve la oportunidad de parar y reflexionar. Definitivamente estoy agradecido de haber tenido un momento de procesar todo.  Ahora estoy emocionado de lo que sea que sigue. ¿Estas emocionado sobre el futuro? Y me refiero a tu futuro, no el futuro de la humanidad o algo como eso.

T: Sí, lo siento hombre, ¡me estoy volviendo macro!

 H: Puedes elegir tus películas ahora, lo que es increíble. Cuando empiezas a salir, pasas tanto tiempo esperando que las personas miren tus películas o escuchen tu música y entonces cuando finalmente lo hacen siempre te preguntas '¿Qué es lo siguiente?' ¿Qué es lo que te preocupa ahora?

T: Tomar las decisiones correctas. Creo que hay una ansiedad en nosotros que se correlaciona con nuestra edad. Quiero poder tener una conversación contigo dentro de 15 años. Es siempre sobre tratar de trabajar con grandes directores para mí. Estoy trabajando con Greta Gerwig ahora. Después voy a estar haciendo algo con uno de mis directores favoritos; Un muy querido director de arte americano. Después voy a estar haciendo Dune, dirigido por Denis Villeneuve. Siempre soñé estar en una película grande como Dunkirk o Dark Knight o Inception. Así que esa es la verdad, Harry.  H: Estoy haciendo mi segundo álbum ahora mismo, así que voy a hacer eso, leer mucho y ver qué pasa. Cuando obtuve el papel en Dunkirk, paso justo al inicio de mi primer álbum, así que tuve que parar todo por cinco meses. Pero cosas como esas pasan cuando tienen que pasar, así que no sé, hombre. Estoy disfrutando de no saber para ser honesto.

T: Me parece que eso es verdad con muchos de los músicos que he conocido. Tienen un horario mucho menor que los actores, que literalmente tienen que presentarse en un momento determinado. No lo sé hombre debe ser como las 3 de la mañana donde sea que estés ahora. Los músicos operan a su discreción.

 H: Cuando estaba en la banda, siempre sabía lo que estaba haciendo con dos años de anticipación. Ahora, estoy haciendo discos por mi cuenta, es bastante emocionante porque se que esto es todo lo que voy a estar haciendo hasta que finalice el disco. Es una nueva manera de trabajar.

T: Me imagino el trabajo del proceso creativo en un álbum individual debe ser muy diferente a cuando eras más joven haciendo música en conjunto con otros.

 H: Si, cuando empecé realmente no sabía que era lo que estaba haciendo. Así que trate de escribir tanto como pude, con muchas personas diferentes posibles y trate y aprendí tanto como pude. Te garantizo que escribí muchas mierdas realmente muy malas antes de escribir algo bueno. Solo un par de cosas para ti... Si te dijeran que solo tienes permitido escuchar una canción, mirar una película, leer solo un libro y hablar con una persona por el resto de tu vida, ¿Cuáles serían tus opciones?

T: Okay, una canción, una película, una persona... Acabo de escribir eso. Lo puse en mis notas. Esa es una gran pregunta. Una canción podría ser Rain por Kid Cudi. Una película podría ser Punch Drunk Love. Un libro... The Book Of Disquiet. Eso es lo que estoy leyendo ahora. Y una persona... quiero mantenerlo eso en misterio. Lo quiero mantener para mí mismo, pero tengo clara mi respuesta en mi cabeza. ¿Que sobre ti? ¿Puedo tirarte esto a ti? ¿Es eso Justo?

T: ¿Y la persona?

 H: Mi persona... voy a hacer lo mismo que tú, voy a mantenerla para mí.

T: Si, si. Oh, hombre.
