St Johns wort. Bees love it. It has cute yellow flowers spring through summer that give way to cute little orange baubles in autumn.

I added four St. John’s Wart plants. They are so beautiful! Yellow flowers turn to lovely red berries. These plants contain many chemicals that act on messengers in the brain that regulate mood. People most commonly use St. John's wort for depression and mood disorders. There is some strong scientific evidence that it is effective for mild to moderate depression.

St John's Wort
the genus of st john's wort is hypericum, as far as I know
planet: sun (not a planet but still)
element: fire
magical properties/powers: it can be used to promote happiness, health, in anti-depression spells--it also has protective properties
some believed that if they put st john's wort in their pillows, st john would grant them blessings and protection
medicinal uses: st. john’s wort, when taken internally, is said to help with depression, anxiety, and insomnia. externally, it can be used to treat minor wounds, burns, inflamamtion, and similar skin disorders. while it is quite efficient on its own, the benefits of st. john’s wort are greater when used with other herbs.
dried st. john’s wort can be kept in dark, dry areas (a cabinet for example) for 1 to 3 years. fresh, it can be kept refrigirated for 2 or 3 weeks. or, you can grow it yourself and decide which you prefer
Bonus recipe: burn salve
ingredients: 1 part dried calendula flowers, 1 part dried comfrey leaves, 1 part dried st. john’s wort plant (leaves + flowers), vegetable oil, glass jar (with lid), cheese cloth/muslin, beeswax, and time lol
Put all of the dried herbs in a glass jar, then pour over vegetable oil of choice until completely covered. Screw on the lid of the jar tightly and store it in a sunny, warm area for 2 or 3 weeks. After 2-3 weeks, strain the infused oil with a muslin or cheese cloth, add a fresh batch of dried herbs to the oil and remove the old herbs (make sure you keep the same oil, it’s the important part!). Infuse for another 2 weeks. After the necessary amount of time has passed, strain the infusion again. In a pan, add the oil infusion, a quarter amount of beeswax (in correlation to the the oil), and heat until beeswax has melted. Once the proper consistency has been reached, transfer to container of choice and store the salve in the fridge for several months
consult your doctor (if possible) and research thoroughly before starting any supplements!!!

St John's Wart, the return !
Tumblr media
We're already deciding for all Johns' fates (well, you're deciding. I always pick the neutral option in those polls) but one of you has another St John's Wort related submission. Their submitter argue that while there's little ground for all Johns to be allowed, it's a St John we're talking about. So,

The plant and its oil, called St. John's blood, can be worn for protection. They can be used to decorate the house for the same reason. People wore it in the sole of their shoe to prevent exhaustion on long walks. 🚶

#1953 - Hypericum perforatum - St. John's Wort
Tumblr media
AKA perforate St John’s wort, klamath weed, tipton weed, goat weed, Hypericum officinale, H. perforatum var. perforatum, H. perforatum var. angustifolium, H. perforatum var. microphyllum, H. perforatum var. veronense, H. veronense, and H. vulgare.
Depending which source you consult, either amember of the member of the Mangosteen family Clusiaceae, the Hypericaceae, or the Guttiferae.
Native to Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa (a combination that shows up a lot in this blog). Now a weed in more than 20 countries. A significant pest in North America, where it had infested more than 2 million hectares by 1940, prior to control by Chrysolina beetles. A noxious weed in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania. Animal production losses in New South Wales have been estimated at $22.5 million a year.
The leaves and flowers contain hypericin, which leads to photo-sensitisation when eaten. Despite that it continues to be sold for its perceived horticultural and medicinal values. A lot of those medical uses are related to depression, but given the very wide range of other medical conditions it’s supposedly useful against, and the very serious risks of adverse interactions with other medications, I wouldn’t risk it myself.
