Henry Winter, flirting

The first day of his visit to Francis’s country house Richard had a little voyage with Henry and Camilla in a boat. And here we have this introduction to Henry’s habits:

“He had a habit, as I was later to discover, of trailing off into absorbed, didactic, entirely self-contained monologues, about whatever he happened to be interested in at the time"

Richard was wrong, of course. Henry’s monologues were not ‘entirely self-contained’, they had particular purpose — at least, two of them were an instrument of mild pressure on Camilla, including this one which Richard heard during their voyage:

"That day he was talking about Elizabeth and Leicester, I remember: the murdered wife, the royal barge, the queen on a white horse talking to the troops at Tilbury Fort, and Leicester and the Earl of Essex holding the bridle rein… Camilla, flushed and sleepy, trailed her hand in the water… It was many years later, and far away, when I came across this passage in The Waste Land: Elizabeth and Leicester beating oars…”

T. S. Eliot left notes for these lines of his poem, citing History of England:

Author of this letter, Alvaro de la Quadra, was a Spanish diplomat and Catholic clergyman, he apparently had a right to marry a couple. For many years Leicester was queen’s favourite and suitor for her hand, but she didn’t want to marry — didn’t want to share her power with anyone, and used her claimed virginity as a political asset. Eventually, Leicester got tired of waiting, and married another woman, which broke the queen's heart.

In view of these facts, the boat scene in TSH looks so ironic. Richard’s surname, Papen, means ‘priest, cleric’ in North German, and he also was a foreign figure in their group, like that Spanish bishop in England. However, Richard wasn't able to marry anyone.

I guess, in such a manner Henry was telling Camilla: "I’m ready to be with you right here, now. But don’t make me wait for too long". And Camilla was flushed, because she understood this reassurance mingled with warning.

Another instance of this mild pressure was quoting passages about Emma Bovary, whose chaotic love choices ruined her life: Sa pensée, sans but d'abord, vagabondait au hasard, comme sa levrette, qui faisait des cercles dans la campagne… “Her thoughts were wandering at first without any purpose” — could it mean "Camilla, make up your mind, or you’ll end up like madame Bovary''?

From Henry’s point these monologues were probably a sort of flirting, an indirect way to show romantic interest towards Camilla.

Come on, Henry, why spend so many words, when you can say Cubitum eamus?

Yandere Chelsea Van Der Zee

Fact: Chelsea's canon surname is literally dutch and if translated! It says "From The Sea!"

AU: Bloody Lagoon is a au where: Chelsea never left the sea.

Meeting Chelsea was the worst! Seriously no jokes!

You were less shocked and more pissed off as she would scare off any of the fish you tried to net.

Everyday and everytime she would go out of her day to piss you off.

She would make harsh insults towards you and sometimes hit your insecurities.

Having enough you decided to throw anything that would hit her.

BONK! Hazaah! A direct hit to her- oh god her nose is bleeding.

She held her broken nose and held a look of sadness as if you were the culprit!

And here comes the most saddest cry in your life, okay now you felt like an asshole.

"Please stop crying!" "NO! You broke my nose, you jerk!" She stopped crying momentarily to say this and returned back to her crying.

Grabbing first aid, you tended to her broken nose. She would make half-ass attempts at threats like: I'll bite your fingers, I'll drown you and I'll make you disappear.

Oh and she's surprisingly fluent in Dutch.

Suffice to say? It was nice having someone to talk to besides listening to the radio on your boat.

Although Chelsea wanted to take selfies with your phone and didn't want to talk.

Until you spoke of your crush....Connor.

The mermaid's attention was now on you. Quickly scooting herself next to you, she quickly devised a plan.

Why don't you be the cool popular girl.

So Chelsea taught you the ways of how to gain popularity and be way past cool.

Overall Chelsea liked helping her human achieve her goals.

Her.......Human.....Hmm.

Maybe she should be a little selfish, nothing wrong with that. . . . .right?

Chelsea's behaviour has been weird lately.

Like she would oftentimes sit very close to you. Like having shoulders touch.

She would stop her insults and would start flirting with you.

She started to sing songs that are related to love or something and hoping to get the pal they like.

When you decided to sleep in your fishing boat for the night, you could've sworn you saw Chelsea watching you sleep.

She would get annoyed whenever you mention your friends and your crush connor.

Actually whenever you mention connor, her nails would dig into the boat

You both got into a fight from one too many of Chelsea's flirting.

"What's your deal!? I'm practicing my flirting?" She defended but you retaliated, "With someone who has a crush on someone, it's messed up! Y'know what, just go!"

You didn't see Chelsea's look of sadness that suddenly turned into anger.

You waited for her to move, but she didn't even move in the slightest.

"I think I just had enough with you, mi amor." She said in spanish....She's bilingual?

And without a second to lose, she lunges towards you and everything went dark.

Your head was throbbing and everything felt sorta cold. Groggily getting up, your vision was blurry and you quickly licked your chapped lips and sharp teeth. Quickly getting up from your laying position, you reach towards your mouth and felt sharp teeth occupying your mouth, looking down at your body, you noticed your entire skin and appearance looked roughly similar to a tiger shark.

"Mijn liefje? What are you doing up?" Chelsea said, she yawns and rubs her eyes. You looked at the mermaid and gave her look that wanted answers to your predicament. Smiling innocently she swims towards a weird stone closet and opens it to reveal clothing tops. "It's simple, it was my magic." She stated as she pulls out a red crop top with two golden cuffs. "I used a spell and turn you into a gorgeous mershark similarly to a tiger shark." Chelsea added as she examines them closer, she nods and tosses them into your arms. "Now put these on, I wanna see you in red!" She says while clapping her hands together as you looked at her with a look of betrayal.

"You turned me into a freak!?" You shouted and dropped the clothes down but they slowly floated due to being underwater. Chelsea's expression turned one of happy into one of annoyances. Putting one hand on her hips and raising the other, she snaps her fingers and spoke in a haunting echoing voice. "Gehoorzamen!" She ordered in dutch as you felt your entire body follow her commands.

With another snap of her fingers, you regained control over your body. "Wh-What did you!?" You asked in fear as Chelsea looms over you. "What did I do? Isn't it obvious, I used my magic!" She said it as if you were an idiot.

"Now here's the quick recap, I started to gain feelings for you which is gross, what kind of weirdo of a mermaid falls for a weak human? Now since you're like me, we can chill and talk as much as we want! Like besties but lovers!" She said joyfully as you continued to stare at her.

You attempted to flee, but only for your tailfin to be grabbed and your entire body to be swung and slammed into the wall. Chelsea's hand held your throat and her sapphire blue eyes now had a murderous look in them. She leans into your ear, her breathing heavy and spoke with an annoyed tone.

"It seems you haven't gotten the memo, Liefde? I own you, that means you obey every word I say." She stops for a moment for a quick deep breath and it looks like she was about to lose her temper with each sentence she spoke. "And if you don't, I'll get mad, very mad. And when I get mad, I get hungry and when I get hungry. I crave for something-." She stops and whispers teasingly in your ear. "Bloederig~" and not knowing dutch, you can easily tell she was talking something about blood of possibly human's.

"So liefde? What do you suggest we do?" She asks as she rubs a thumb on your chin, enjoying the sandpaper like skin. You looked at her in the eyes and muttered quietly and asks what you said.

"What was that? I couldn't quite catch that." She hums as she leans in closely and you sadly repeat what you said. "Let's go and do something fun...babe." you felt disgusted calling this....monster that name.

"That's a good shark~" She coos and begins to lead you towards a different location.

One thing I love in LFLS (or it can be applied to any Human Hetalia AU) is when the international couples learn each other's language. In LFLS, Lovino is already fluent in Spanish (took it in school, his father is half-Spanish, hence the Vargas surname), but Antonio is sooo enthusiastic to learn proper Italian for him. Beams at him when he says something. Ludwig looking for approval to Feliciano after an interaction in Italian. Feliciano wanting a cuddle for every German sentence he can utter. Michele telling Harry he could politely order a soup in the Gaeltacht now, so pleased with himself. Harry speaking broken Italian/Sicilian with Maria on the holidays.

And Arthur already knows how to speak French & everytime Fran thinks "Now, this is too far from the standard, he won't know this and I can be snide", Arthur catches him and Fran is 10x more in love with him.

Thinking abt the Sides' last names in my AUs just got me wanting to highlight the iZ!twins.

Their dad was Spanish (like Spain Spanish) new money, Rómulo Amós Ortiz. Pharmaceuticals CEO - the kinda asshole who would price hike insulin and epi-pens. 0/10, awful human being and distinctly NOT Dad of The Year material.

Their mom was Italian old money, Mara F. Ortiz-Vuitton. Besides heiress status, also a CEO to an MLM and also all around terrible woman. She (and Rómulo) left a lot of parenting to hired help.

The name alluding to fortune and luck didn't mean much - they were abusive to the twins in different directions - really driving that Golden Child and Black Sheep wedge something fierce since the two were at least 12. Things just went to shit after Remus fell off that scaffolding...

Roman left slowly burning that candle at both ends trying to please them, while being deeply emotionally neglected. Remus just stopped giving a shit, once he became The Designated Patient.

So was it any wonder why, for a time, those two had taken on pseudonymous surnames when they struck out for themselves?

Roman went the Nic Cage Route, not wanting play into nepotism on his birth name alone. Alejo had a nice ring to it. Being a "defender/helper" really vibed to him... a desire that the Dead Enders took advantage of.

Remus went for obfuscation and kind of crass for his "pedigree". He wanted fuck all to do with his family and went with Bacallao. Nothing fancier than a reference to fishing for cod.

Tributes of the 74th Hunger Games

DISCLAIMER: This is not my attempt at asserting anything about the canon version of events and characters. Instead, this is a reference list for my Hunger Games fic Holding Bright, which is an AU! Meaning that there are two major changes you will see in this list: (1) the District 12 tributes are Madge and Gale, and (2) Madge is 18 instead of 16. Also, it is my headcanon that Madge is short for Marigold :)

The list is divided by district, with the male tribute first, followed by the female tribute. The numbers next to each tribute's name is their age at the time of the reaping. Under the Read More are some of my thoughts on how I decided on certain names

Alanna's given name is a reference to famous mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing. Milo's surname is an even more low key reference to him as well (aka I got a little lazy lol)

My thought process to come up with a name related to D3's industry: kilowatt -> kilo -> Milo

In the books, but even more so the movies, D4 is sort of Irish-coded (which doesn't really make sense because the East Coast is much more well known for having Irish-Americans than the West Coast but oh well), so for Hurley's first name I chose an Irish name

However, based on the map of Panem, I headcanon that D4 has a good amount of Latino influence (though I think D10 even more so): because of this, Hurley's surname + Adriana's full name are all Spanish-language names

I also chose the name Adriana because it sounds like Adriatic Sea, tying her into D4's industry

I went along with popular fanon that Foxface's first name is Finch

Because he's from D5 (power), Nate's first name comes from alternating current -> alternate -> Nate

D5 takes up almost all of current-day Arizona + a good amount of Utah + parts of Nevada and New Mexico. Because of this, I think D5 has a lot of descendants of the current-day Navajo people, so I gave him a sort of common Navajo surname

Ivan's name contains the word "van", and Dola's name is a bastardization of the word "gondola" because I wanted things sort of related to transportation lol 😅

D6 partially encompasses Minnesota, which has a ton of Scandinavian-Americans, so I gave Dola a Scandinavian surname

Sawyer's first name means "woodcutter". His surname is of Blackfeet origin

D8's tributes have names that sound like words related to their industry: Dennis sounds like "denim", and Callie is from "calico"

I made up the name Bartley because it sounds like "barley"

Colton's first name has the word "colt" in it, tying him into D10's industry of livestock. His surname, as well as Blanca's full name, are Spanish-language names due to D10 being in present-day Texas and Mexico

Moisés “Mo” Bondia! Official OC Info Post

Age: 55 (his age during the film)

Gender: AMAB/male (cis); he/him pronouns

Height: 5’6” (170 cm)

Physical description: Has glasses with oval frames, medium brown skin tone, and dark curly hair (3A?) with a puff on the front right side and grey streaks on the both sides; bearded. Wide-set eyes, broad nose; he’s lightly freckled on his cheeks and has dimples.

Dresses no differently than the townspeople but does wear a Sephardic style kippah (aka a yarmulke; photo is for reference) on his head. He’s on the chubby side, with round cheeks and a little double chin.

His clothing palette consists of goldish-browns and blues.

I’m still trying to tweak his clothing style...

Personality: Mostly soft-spoken but has a bit of a mischievous/joking streak; very dorky sense of humor. Patient for the most part; has a calm, deliberate way of speaking. On the guarded side–vigilant around new people, though he tries to be as open and friendly as possible. Has a poor sense of direction.

Enjoys wine (the doofy jokes really come out when drunk) and singing (but is bad at it). He is a big Jewish nerd™. His family escaped with their chumash (the Torah/Five Books of Moses), a prayer book or two, and a few other things.

His name, Bondia, means “good day” (from the Hebrew surname, Yom Tov). It’s shaped his outlook on life, despite, or because of, the trauma of his childhood–he was five when he and his parents fled the bandits (at the beginning of Encanto).

Background [cw for parental death and depression]: Moisés and his parents, Ester (mother) and Jonás (father), have been in the Encanto since its creation. His parents both passed away by the time he’s in his mid-late 20s. Because he’s really the only Jew in the Encanto, he feels like the odd one out (in that sense, he has a kinship with Bruno and, to an extent, Mirabel). The townspeople get along with him, despite his differences.

Ester’s and Jonás’ deaths occurred one after the other and hit Mo very hard, and he went through a period of depression and, just, not taking care of himself very well. He wasn’t always chubby (fairly average build in his teens and early twenties), and actually lost an unhealthy amount of weight after his parents’ deaths but eventually recovered–he’s able to sympathize with Bruno in this way. He is body confident and prefers himself chubby.

Relationship with the Madrigals and others: After the Madrigals discover Judaica among their heirlooms/possessions, Mo falls into the role of a rabbi and helps the family explore their Jewish ancestry and reclaim that part of their identity. He worries about his motivation (e.g., having more Jews around will make him less lonely, is that why he’s doing what he’s doing?) and wonders if the Madrigals, especially Bruno, are actually interested (he is/they are).

Bruno becomes Mo’s study partner. Mo helps Bruno through the conversion process, doing his best to offer support when Bruno struggles with guilt over leaving Catholicism. They are not romantically involved, though I’ve toyed with the idea of a queerplatonic relationship. (Mo is likely panromantic and maybe ace.)

He and the Padre have an odd friendship. They spar over theology and general religion a lot, getting into intense debates, yet they can be seen chatting companionably at the bar(?)/other places.

Other info: Works as the Encanto’s calligrapher. He knows Spanish and Hebrew, and maybe some Ladino (Judeo-Spanish). There are a lot of challenges to being Jewish in the Encanto, but he and eventually the Madrigals make it work.

He likes flowers and sketching landscapes.

Pokémon AU info: He has a bunch of Litwick that hang out around him (8, + 1 shiny) and provide light on Shabbat. Also trains a Bramblin that eventually evolves into a Brambleghast, a Golurk, and a Smeargle. He picks up a stray Mareep.

The Litwick are a reference to a menorah. Bramblin reminds me of the burning bush, so I gave it to Mo. Golurk seems to be based on the Golem of Prague from Jewish legend. Smeargle reflects his work as a calligrapher. And Mareep because Moses is a shepherd in the Torah.

Behind the scenes for the names:

Barnacles: Purely going off vibes. “Bernard” seems like a good first name for him, and my idea was that “Barnacles” is a nickname that comes from his surname.

Kwazii: “Hawkins” is after Jim Hawkins from Treasure Island/Treasure Planet. Both stories involve sailing, adventure, and pirates.

Peso: Literally just looked up a bunch of Spanish surnames and decided “Morales” was the best.

Shellington. Looked up several Scottish surnames, and Holmes fit best. Bonus points because in the books, Shellington actually dresses up as Sherlock Holmes.

Dashi: Her last name comes from the Omura’s whale— one of the featured animals in The Octonauts and the Ring of Fire.

Tweak: “Ida” means “work” or “labor” in several languages. “Lagos” is Greek for rabbit or hare.

Inkling: I don’t know. I couldn’t think of a surname for him. He’s like Guianan. No other name. Just Inkling. That’s it.

The Vegimals: Since they are Shellington’s adopted children, they share his last name.

Chapter 13

“Welcome back to NCIS.”  Gibbs greeted you, “We have a mandatory sexual harassment meeting.” 

You groaned and Tim patted you on the shoulder consolingly with one hand while the other held a piece of paper and a pen.

Realising the strategy that Tim was planning to use to pass the time in the meeting, you grinned at him.

“You’re going to need a partner for that.”

“Yeah, I was thinking Tony.”  He teased.

“You were thinking Tony for what?”  The agent asked.

“How I could pass the time during the mandatory meeting today.”

“That’s today?”  Tony exclaimed, “Boss, I’ve got the flu and I need to go home.”

“Suck it up DiNozzo.  McGee, (Surname), keep that paper out of the presenter’s sight.”

Your team filed into the room where the meeting was being held and after introducing herself, the presenter asked for the lights to be turned off.  Her assistant turned them off and the presentation began.

Tim twisted his arm behind his back and handed you the piece of paper.  Unfolding it, you saw the grid that he had drawn and the circle he had placed in the middle.  You drew a cross in the top left corner of the grid, folded up the paper and placed it in his open, waiting hand.

While Tim was pondering his next move, your phone vibrated against your thigh.  You pulled it out from your pocket and hid it underneath the desk.  When you were sure it was out of sight, you unlocked your phone to read the text message.

Rafael 9:04am: He kicked me out of the bedroom and locked the door.

You 9:04am: Why?

You then noticed that your name, Rafael’s name, and Frederick’s name were all on the top of the screen on the messages app.

“That’s what Frederick wanted my number and phone for this morning.”

Three dots appeared on your phone but Tim shook his hand impatiently, distracting you from your phone.  You put your phone on your leg and after checking it was still hidden from sight, you grabbed the paper from Tim, put a cross on the bottom left corner of the grid, and gave the folded bit of paper back to Tim.

Frederick 9:05am: He was being uncooperative.  I need help wording a paragraph and all he said was to use the thesaurus on the computer.

Rafael 9:05am: How is that a bad suggestion?

Frederick 9:06am: I need to invoke emotion and the thesaurus is too clinical.

Rafael 9:06am: That’s what you get for using a thesaurus that caters to a specific audience.

You 9:07am: Are you aiming for positive or negative emotion?

Frederick 9:07am: Positive.  I want to talk about the connections between endorphins and illegal drugs in my first college lecture.

You 9:08am: Endorphins are incredibly similar to illegal substances in the sense that they can both induce extreme highs.  Both substances can affect the memory but only endorphins have the capacity to manage your pain and stress in a healthy manner while contributing to a positive sense of wellbeing.   They are most commonly released through exercise, eating chocolate, and having sex.

You hit send and lifted your gaze to see that Tim was still deciding his next move.  Your gaze returned to your phone and as you reread what you had typed, your mind flashed back to the conversation that you had with Emily, JJ, and Penelope.

Frederick 9:10am: Did that knowledge come from your time at the BAU or with NCIS?

Rafael 9:10am: Don’t be a brat, Frederick.

Frederick 9:11am: I am not being a brat!

Rafael 9:11am: You are.  You chose not to thank (Name) for sharing her knowledge and helping you to write the paragraph.  Even if you don’t end up using what she typed, you should at least express gratitude for her assistance.  I’m sure she has other things to focus on.

Frederick 9:11am:  Focusing on me is just as important as what she is working on at NCIS.

You 9:12am: Nope.  I’m stuck in a pointless mandatory sexual harassment meeting.

Frederick 9:12am: That does sound pointless.

“Lights please.”  The presenter called out and the lights were switched on almost immediately.  You blinked as your eyes adjusted to the sudden brightness.  Your presenter began droning on about different touches in the workplace and once again, you wondered about the purpose of these meetings.

You 9:14am: Now our presenter is talking about different touches in the workplace that could be classified as unwanted.  She’s just moved onto the fact that these guidelines will also affect how we interact with suspects and criminals.  This is bordering on ridiculous.  It’s not as if a suspect is very likely to stay still and say “Yes, you have my permission to put me in handcuffs.”

Frederick 9:15am: If they do, they’re either extremely guilty and have a conscience or they are interested in being restrained in a sexual situation.

You 9:16am: Trust me, I’ve had a few people hinting that they would like to be handcuffed in the bedroom as an NCIS agent.  You would think it would have happened in my BAU days but no.  They weren’t even people of interest.

You 9:16am: Rafael’s been quiet for a while.  Is everything all right on your end?

Rafael 9:17am: Worried that I would burn down the house, cariño?

You 9:17am: The thought did cross my mind.

Frederick 9:17am: He’s cooking.  I can smell it from here.

Rafael 9:20am: That had better be a compliment Frederick.  These empanadas are vegetarian.

When no more messages popped up on your screen, you realised that the conversation was finished and as you slid your phone back into your pocket, you grinned with amusement at the turn that the texts between you, Frederick and Rafael had taken.  Thankfully, the meeting ended quite soon after that and there was a rush to exit the room.

“Having to sit through that meeting would be the perfect retribution for Sterling’s Interpol team for everything they did to us,”  Torres stated.

“Hang on.  Is Sterling still the leader of that team?  What happened in his trial with the Naval Court?”  Bishop inquired.

All of your team turned to face you and you shrugged, “I didn’t exactly ask what happened to Sterling in his trial.  The Naval Court isn’t the most welcoming of places.  However, I did see Sterling the day after we had our trial and he gave me a replacement carton of eggs.”

You half expected someone on your team to make a comment about ‘better late than never’ in reference to the eggs you received but it didn’t come. 

“Test the eggs before you use them,”  Tony ordered while pointing his pen at you.

“I still can’t believe how lenient the Naval Court was when it came to Barba and Chilton,” Tim complained.  “You would think they would have a little bit more sympathy for the conditions and situations that one of their own found themselves in.”

“It comes down to politics McGee.  That in itself is a complicated subject.”

“When was the last time that you met with the Naval Court Tony?”

“Mother, I’m sure that you remember the team that I work with.”  Ducky’s voice stopped the two men from continuing their bickering.

“Yes, I do.  I am not senile Donald.  These two are new.”  She declared, pointing at Torres and Bishop.

Ducky introduced them and you nodded in greeting to Ducky’s mother.  The last time that she visited, you had found out the hard way that she didn’t like it when people waved to her.

“I heard someone talking about the Naval Court.”

“That was us, ma’am.”  Tim indicated the three of you.

“Didn’t your mother tell you not to point?  It’s quite rude, you know.”

Deciding to assist your partner, you jumped into the conversation, “You were saying how we were talking about the Naval Court?”

“Oh, yes.  My godson is an Admiral who presides over the Naval Court.  Why were you there?  Are you a felon?”

“MOTHER!”

“No ma’am.  If I was a felon, the Naval Court wouldn’t let me work here anymore.”

“Special Agent (Name) is one of the best, mother.  The Naval Court knows that and like she said, if the Naval Court had found her even the tiniest bit guilty, she would not have been allowed to return to her job.”

Ducky escorted his mother away from the bullpen and into the lift.  You all waited for the lift doors to close before any of you chose to speak.

“Well, she’s something.”  Bishop eventually stated.

“If you think what just happened was bad then you should be grateful that you missed the time when she asked Abby if she and Ducky were together.”

Torres who had just taken a sip of water, spat it out on reflex.  “She what?”  He coughed.

“It gets better!” Ziva guffawed, “She advised Abby to ‘get a move on because she wants grandchildren and Ducky’s not getting any younger.’  I think it’s safe to say that that was awkward for Abby and Ducky.”

“I’d forgotten about that!”

“I didn’t,”  Abby glared at you with her bag on her shoulder.

“What are you all still doing here?” Gibbs called from the top of the stairs that led to the MTAC room, “Go home!”

“Don’t have to tell us twice boss!” Bishop assured him.

The bullpen was quite noisy as chairs were moved and bags were hoisted onto shoulders.  Your team chatted amongst yourselves as you filed into the lift and although it was a bit cramped, none of you complained as Ziva pressed the down button.

You walked into your house and were greeted by multiple smells that made your mouth water instantly.  Frederick and Rafael were sitting at the dining room table and both of them turned around to face you.

“You’re home earlier than we thought you would be.”  Frederick greeted you.  You heard the worry and the question in his statement.

“Boss let us out early.  He was probably being nice because of the meeting we had to endure.”  You explained.

“As you know, Rafael cooked and there are some empanadas left.”

“I haven’t had an empanada before,” you revealed, shrugging your bag off of your shoulder.

“Would you like to try one?”  Rafael asked quietly with his eyes intently focused on you.

“Yes, I would.”
