Audio Drama Recommendations, Pt. III
Tumblr media
Click here for part one and here for part two. Recently, I've been drawing a lot, which gives me plenty of time to listen to audio dramas and podcasts. These are the ones I liked the most and found entertaining enough to recommend to others. This is not in any particular order, either.
The Green Horizon – is a sci-fi comedy drama created and written by Paul Walsh. It is sponsored by Faustian Nonsense, an indie entertainment network. It currently has three seasons, with each episode being about 20 - 30 minutes long, but later on it increases to 30 - 40 minutes. A fourth season is said to be coming out soon as well.
It is set in the year 2261, and it focuses on a ne'er-do-well Irish space captain and his rag-tag crew, as they traverse a war-torn Galaxy in search of fame and fortune. [ONGOING]
It was a little chaotic and rough at the beginning, but it does smooth out and become more polished. I can definitely tell that they up their game with the improved sound effects and production quality. The voice actors and the writing for the audio drama does an excellent job at bringing their characters to life, which made it very fun to follow along.
If you like Firefly, Red Dwarf, Orville, Cowboy Bepop, and so on then I think you may enjoy this too.
DERELICT – is a sci-fi narrative audio drama from award-winning science fiction author J. Barton Mitchell, and produced by Night Rocket Productions. It currently has one season titled FATHOM, which consist of 10 episodes with each one ranging from 40 mins to an hour, mostly the latter.
Something has been found at the bottom of Earth's ocean. An ancient artifact that can only be described as a giant door, inset into the sea floor. It becomes known as the Vault. A gigantic enigma, buried and forgotten...nineteen thousand feet down.
To study the artifact, the galaxy's most powerful corporation, Maas-Dorian, has built a massive, self-contained, secret laboratory base surrounding it, named FATHOM. It's objective: unlock the secrets of the artifact and discover what it holds. But some mysteries should remain buried. And some doors should never be opened... [ONGOING]
DERELICT started as the first project set up as a kickstarter. They produced one episode to entice backers, but then the pandemic happened, and they didn’t raise enough money for the rest of it. Instead, they worked on a prequel season called FATHOM. It's where the story really starts, and I highly suggest you listen to it before listening to "DERELICT E1 - Through the Gate."
I hope they redo the DERELICT's first episode because there's a bit of disconnection from it and FATHOM. For example, Sarah and Agent Blayne already know each other. She mentions it to the others, but the conversation they have with each other doesn’t make it seem that way.
Never mind. I apparently confused this Sarah with the Sarah in FATHOM. Can't blame me for thinking that when I heard the name Sarah and that she was already familiar with Agent Blayne.
Deviser – is a sci-fi horror audio drama created, directed, acted and produced by Harlan Guthrie. The same creator of Malevolent. It's a 7-part limited series, with each episode being about 20 mins long.
Son wakes up aboard a spaceship bound for earth in an effort to recolonize. What he discovers, however, will change everything he knows about his world and himself. [COMPLETED]
It's not for everyone, so please do not ignore the content warnings because there's graphic description of violence, self harm, body horror, gore, animal death/being hurt, and what not.
Victoriocity – is a detective comedy audio drama written by Chris and Jen Sugden, directed by Nathan Peter Grassi and produced by Dominic Hargreaves. It is an entirely independent production. It has two seasons, containing 13 episodes in total, and each one is about 30 to 45 minutes long. There's also a feature-length special and a up-coming third season with the help of a kickstarter.
It is 1887 in Even Greater London, an alternate steampunk Victorian London, where Queen Victoria reigns even after being assassinated eleven times, thanks to the wonders of modern science.
In this vast metropolis, Inspector Archibald Fleet and journalist Clara Entwhistle investigate a murder, only to find themselves at the centre of a conspiracy of impossible proportions. [ONGOING]
It's put together so well, and I see why people say it gives off strong Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett vibes to it. So if you like their works, then I wouldn't be surprised to hear that you like this too.
Impact Winter – is an apocalyptic vampire audio drama created and written by Travis Beacham (Carnival Row, Pacific Rim). It has two seasons containing 22 episodes in total and each one is about 17 to 30 minutes long.
“They came after the impact and the firestorms. When the sun went dark. Like they’d been there all along. Just waiting.”
In the British countryside, a band of survivors forms a resistance in the fallout shelter of a medieval castle. Darcy is a battle-tested vampire hunter who is at the front line, leading the charge to save humanity. Meanwhile, her younger sister Hope wants life to return to normal so she can go above ground and know what it’s like to live again. And she just might be willing to risk it all. [ONGOING]
It has a stacked cast led by Holliday Grainger (Cinderella, Great Expectations), Esme Creed-Miles (Hanna, The Legend of Vox Machina), Liam Cunningham (Games of Thrones, Hunger), Himesh Patel (Station Eleven, Tenet), David Gyasi (Interstellar, Carnival Row), Caroline Ford (Carnival Row, Nekrotronic), Chloe Pirrie (Emma, Carnival Row), and Bella Ramsey (Games of Thrones, The Last of Us).
This reminded me a lot of the film 30 Days of Nights (2007) with a little bit of Reign of Fire (2002), which were both fun films to watch. I think if you like those two, especially the former, you'll enjoy this or at least be entertained by it.
A Voice From Darkness – is a scripted paranormal horror audio drama. It is written and produced by Jac Rhys. It currently has two seasons, containing 20 episodes in total and each one is about 20 to 30 minutes long. It also has 7 bonus voicemail episodes and 15 Patreon exclusive episodes which are longer than the main episodes. A third season in the works as well.
Join parapsychologist and radio broadcaster Dr. Malcolm Ryder as he helps those who suffer the supernatural, paranormal or otherworldly problems on his call-in radio show. It is also interspersed with segments, one of which is called 'Today In Odd America' that delves into the origins of a holiday, local traditions, and history. [ONGOING]
If you like Welcome To Night Vale then I think you'll like this too. A Voice From Darkness is a bit more serious and not as long-drawn as Night Vale was, with a perfect mix of storytelling and lore. It also reminds me a bit of The Magnus Archive too.
How i Died – is a mystery audio drama that brings a "new twist on the true crime genre." It is an Audiohm Media original production, co-starring Vince Dajani as Jon Spacer and Shaina Waring as Sheriff Fran Crowley. It currently has three seasons with 39 episodes in total, not including bonus episodes. Each episode is usually about 20 mins, give or take a few minutes.
Bodies are piling up in the strange town of Springfield, and forensic pathologist Jonathan Spacer intends to find out why. But, Jon isn’t without his own secrets… He can talk to the dead, for starters. [ONGOING]
Ooo, a character that can speak to the dead? It's always so interesting to see what they'll do with their ability and where the creators take them. This has been entertaining, but at times I do think they can do better in developing their characters a bit more. For example, I can count on one hand the number of times Crowley doesn't get angry. Though to be fair, Jon isn't an immediately likable character, but that does change the further you go...sorta.
The Amelia Project – is a comedy fiction audio drama created, written, directed, produced and edited by Philip Thorne and Øystein Ulsberg Brager for Imploding Fictions and The Fable and Folly Network. It currently has four seasons, with a fifth one on the way. There's about 72 episodes, not including prologue, special, and BTS episodes which would up the total to 122. Each episode also varies in length from 20 to 45 minutes long.
The Amelia Project is a secret agency that fakes its clients' deaths, then lets them reappear with a brand-new identity. A black comedy full of secrets, twists... and cocoa. The series starts as a succession of interviews with clients who want to fake their deaths, then slowly a larger narrative begins to emerge... Each episode tells its own story, but we recommend starting with Season 1. [ONGOING]
It was fun to listen to while I was drawing or washing the dishes. I could also follow along without becoming too distracted by it, either. I was worried it would be one of those that take a while to get to the main overall story, but thankfully it did not. It will definitely keep you entertained and interested to know what will happen next.
Community Cat News – is a neighborhood news show done from the perspective of cats. There's currently 13 episodes so far and each one varies from 5 to 12 minutes long.
Local News: The human is opening the fridge! Will we get a taste?
Foreign Affairs: What are those squirrels up to now?
Traffic: WHY is the bathroom door shut again?
Every episode is sponsored by Meow Meow Puffytail, Feline Rights Attorney, who is ready to sue your human for even the slightest inconvenience. [ONGONG]
It's cute, light-hearted, and funny. I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did. It even uplifted my mood.

25 and Willex (bonus points if the child/dog/friend is Reggie?) (If you're still taking prompts for this 😁)
Every year for Halloween, Willie went back to the group home where he'd stayed to volunteer to take the kids trick or treating. Not only was it a way of giving back - of assuaging the guilt he sometimes felt, wondering why Caleb had picked a chaotic, messy fourteen year old over any of the sweeter, smaller kids - but it was amazing fun too.
He got to dress up, run around with a bunch of kids, and also maybe keep a list of houses to come back and egg later, if they were weird or stuck up about 'those group home kids begging for candy'.
Besides, being 18 at the Hollywood Ghost Club on Halloween sucked. It wasn't even like he could use his fake ID, the bartenders all knew him. And Caleb was super strict about stuff like that during business hours. So he helped out at the group home, and then went to the staff party at the Club the day after, when they were closed and nobody cared too much about whether or not a certain son of the owner swiped a Bloodtini. Or skated off the railing. Or tried to dunk the green grilled cheeses in the chocolate fountain.
And okay, so maybe this year his costume was a little obscure, but he'd procrastinated getting anything, so he ended up raiding Caleb's old costumes from his 'I did other stuff on Broadway too you know' closet, and some of his own, and a trip to the dollar store, and he was pretty pleased with himself.
Except clearly someone recognised him.
"OH MY GOD, ZEKE ZILLIONS SPACE COWBOY?" someone across the street screamed, before dragging someone by the arm over to them.
"See, I told you he was a real character," Willie told the four nine year olds he was chaperoning. They rolled their eyes at him.
"Oh my god oh my god," A boy about his age said. He was dressed up as a zombie, though for some reason he was also carrying a wok. His friend was also a zombie, but had on a long pink wig, giant fake pearls, and a pink dress. He had great legs. "Zeke Zillions Space Cowboy was my absolute favourite cartoon as a kid. Can I please get a picture? Pretty please?"
"Sure can, Pard'ner," he said in his best Zeke Zillions impression, and the guy straight up went 'EEEEeee' like he was an early twothousands internet fangirl. After his friend took a bunch of pictures, he thanked the kids for their patience.
"By the way, number 42 is handing out full-sized candy bars," ZomBarbie said.
Throughout the night, every time they crossed paths (ZomBarbie and the Wokking Dead were accompanied by a witch, Kurt Cobain, and a tiny ghost buster), they'd wave at each other, as his fan shouted out a 'HI ZEKE!'. Eventually they ended up at the same house, waiting for the kids to get back.
"Sorry about Reggie," ZomBarbie said. "He's um, kind of a fanboy for that show. Like, writes-fanfiction-and-goes-to-obscure-fan-meet-ups kind of fan. I think you just made his year."
"That's okay, I'm glad someone remembers good old Zeke," Willie said. He was definitely going sleuthing on AO3 later. He wondered what the ships were. "The show meant a lot to me as a kid, what with the obvious queer-coding." Hopefully, a cute boy in a dress would understand that.
"Yeah," ZomBarbie said. "My parents didn't allow me to watch it. Too worried I'd turn out 'fruity'." He motioned to himself. "Clearly they succeeded," he said sarcastically.
"You do really pull off that dress, though," Willie said, waggling his eyebrows. His zombie friend went adorably flustered, from what he could tell under the zombie makeup.
Before he could flirt any more, the kids came back, complaining about how this house was handing out toothbrushes and toothpaste. "Can you put them on the list, Willie?" one of them, the girl dressed as Coraline, asked.
"Handing out toothbrushes is kind of dorky, but not an egg-able offense," Willie told her. "We reserve that for bigots and assholes."
"You have a list?" ZomBarbie asked, as they walked to the next house. His kids and the little Ghost Buster were comparing notes, it seemed, pointing at different houses.
"Yeah, lot of people in this fancy-pants neighbourhood don't take kindly to poor foster kids showing up," Willie said darkly.
"Carlos said something about that white house with the American Flag outside complaining about him going back to his own neighbourhood," the witch said darkly. "We live two blocks from here."
Willie glared, and made a note of it. "You wanna join me?" he asked, mostly to ZomBarbie, but quickly looking away at the rest of the group.
"My tía would kill me," the witch said, before smiling slyly. "But I'm sure Alex wouldn't mind going."
ZomBarbie spluttered a little, but managed to squeak out a little 'okay!'
Jackpot.
Behind him, he heard the guy's friend sigh happily. "And once again, Zeke Zillions saves the day, dispenses justice to evil doers, and captures hearts."

Phantom Boy (3)
When the Doctors Fenton lose their son in a lab accident involving a ghost portal, the distraught parents will do anything to get him back. Even if it means breaking the immutable laws of life and death. But that thing? That’s not their boy.
First Chapter | Previous Chapter
Chapter 3: A New Home (Read it on AO3)
[Warnings for mind control and abduction]
When Danny was finally released from the thermos, it was into a world of green, as far as the eye could see. He could only assume that he'd been sent to the Ghost Zone... like the no-good ghost he was.
It was strangely beautiful, in an eerie sort of way. The air itself seemed to thrum with an invisible energy that made Danny feel more and more ghostly with each passing second. His body felt looser and lighter, as if his insides had turned to smoke. Something in his chest grew colder and colder, though not unpleasantly so, and pulsed. It felt almost like a heartbeat, but backwards or inside-out, if that made any sort of sense. He didn't exactly hate the sensations, but subsequently, he also felt less and less human.
The wound on his leg healed rapidly with his newfound energy, even his jumpsuit somehow fixed itself. He found that it wasn't the slightest struggle to maintain his ghost form, even when he was tired. It almost felt like he couldn't change back to a human. His heart sank at that realization. He was forced to wonder if he was still human at all. And why he even wanted to be, anymore.
He drifted aimlessly for what felt like hours, though it was impossible to tell how much time was actually passing. There was no going home, even if he could find the Ghost Zone side of the Fenton Portal. That place wasn't his home anymore anyway—or rather, it had never been his home. It had been Danny Fenton's home, and evidently, he wasn't Danny Fenton.
So who did that make him, then?
His time spent lost in the swirling green currents came to an abrupt end when his back hit one of the many huge rocks floating around. There, he finally met someone. Multiple someones, actually.
Granted, he hadn't been there very long, but the Ghost Zone seemed to him to be as vast as outer space, populated with many objects, all so incredibly distant from each other that to a tiny little being like Danny, it appeared mostly empty. For this reason, he'd assumed it would take a lot longer for him to meet an actual person, let alone four.
The first was a young woman dressed like a rock-star, with flaming cyan hair and a guitar slung across her back. Her three companions were a hulking metal man with fiery green hair; a green old man with wild white hair, wearing tinted safety glasses and an old fashioned lab coat; and a little boy dressed like a cowboy, riding a skeletal horse. They stood behind her, watching curiously from a safe distance while she leaned down to look right into his eyes.
"I don't think I've seen you around before," said the only girl in the group. "What's your name, kid?"
"I'm... I don't really know."
"You're new, huh?" she said with a thoughtful tilt of her head.
From seemingly nowhere, familiar music began to play, drifting in from the far distance like a circus train chugging slowly into a station.
She tensed and looked off to where the music was coming from. "Oh no," she said abruptly, then grabbed him by the wrist. "You'd better come with us."
"What's that music?" Danny asked, but the other three all shushed him.
The metal ghost looked around tensely, while the scientist ghost pulled open one of the floating doors and ushered them all inside. Past the door was a huge engineering lab, not dissimilar to the Fenton Works lab, but much bigger.
Danny waited until the door was closed behind them all before asking, "What is this place? And who are you guys?"
"I am Technus! Master of all technology! And this is my lair!" said the scientist ghost, gesturing broadly to the lab. "Unlike my colleagues', my lair is discreet, and out of the way. We'll never be found here."
"I'm Ember," said the rocker girl. "That's Skulker and Youngblood." She gestured to the robot ghost and the child ghost in turn.
"And this is Skelton!" Youngblood said, patting his horse on the head.
The horse nodded and said, "Pleased to meet you."
Danny blinked in surprise. He hadn't expected the bone horse to speak. "Uh... same here," he said.
"And what about you?" Ember asked him. "Oh, you said you didn't know yet. Man, you must've died pretty recently, then. That's rough. We can help you pick a name."
"You seem to be wearing some kind of protective jumpsuit," Technus observed. "Perhaps a name that reflects your scientific background, like... Technus Junior! You could be my assistant!"
"Uh... no thanks," Danny refused.
"There aren't many ghosts as young as you, except Youngblood, obviously," Ember noted. "How about Baby-Pop?"
"Baby-Pop?" Danny pulled a face and shook his head again.
"You should pick a name that tells people something about you!" Youngblood suggested. "Like I'm young, and Ember has fire hair, and Skulker's a hunter. Something like that."
"You're a ghost now. Your name should strike fear into the hearts of your enemies," Skulker told him. "You should choose something threatening, like Oblivion, or the Annihilator! Tell me, ghost boy, what strikes fear deep into your core?"
Danny thought back to just a few hours before, to overhearing his parents calling him an abomination, a freak of nature.
Something that told people about him... something that struck fear into his core.
He's not our boy. He's just a phantom boy, a painful reminder of what we've lost.
He felt an ache in his chest at the memory of those words. Without his bidding, his hands clenched into fists at his sides momentarily, then fell open as cold despair crawled down his throat.
Yeah... that'd do it.
"What about... Phantom?"
"Ooh, I like it!" Technus said.
"That's pretty metal," Ember agreed, nodding with approval.
"It's got more of a classic feel to it, without undermining its inherent fear factor," Skulker added, considering.
"It suits you," Skelton told him.
"Darn tootin'!" Youngblood exclaimed. "That's one mighty fine name, bookeroo!"
"Buckaroo," Skelton corrected.
"Are you sure?" Youngblood asked, and the horse nodded. "Oh, okay. Buckaroo, then."
"So, why did you guys drag me in here out of nowhere?" Danny—Phantom asked. "Did it have something to do with that circus music?"
"Circus Gothica," Ember said solemnly. "The ringmaster, Freakshow, has a powerful magical artifact that can control ghosts."
"He is human, and he enslaves our kind for the entertainment of his, as well as to pillage riches for his own personal gain," Skulker explained with an angry sneer contorting his steel face. "His circus train can pass through the Ghost Zone to shorten the travel from one location to the next, and to give him the opportunity to enthrall more ghosts to join his wretched show."
"Since ghosts don't need sleep, he forces the ghosts under his control to perform non-stop," Technus added. "And when they're not performing, they're doing physical labor, or being forced to steal for him. No ghost can stop him without falling prey to his magical artifact, and no human has ever tried."
"Humans are evil," Youngblood said. "They don't care about us. They're either afraid of us, or they hate us, or they laugh at us in Freakshow's stupid circus."
"Oh... I see." Phantom swallowed. If that was how they felt about humans, he'd better not let them discover he was still sort-of alive.
"Yeah," Ember said. "Word to the wise, Baby-Pop, if you hear 'Entry of the Gladiators', that's your cue to exit the stage. Once you're under Freakshow's control, there's no getting out of it."
"I'll keep that in mind," Phantom said. He looked around the lab, trying to come up with a conversation topic that wasn't such a downer. If this was Technus' lair, he couldn't help wondering what the other ghost's lairs were like. They were probably related to their various interests and personalities, he assumed. "So, what do you guys do around here?"
"Well, once the circus is outta town, we can do whatever we want," Ember said. "Youngblood likes to play pretend, Technus is working on some kind of power-enhancing exoskeleton—"
"Ecto-skeleton!" Technus corrected.
"Skulker likes to go hunting—trap and release, of course," she continued, ignoring Technus' interruption. "And I've got a concert coming up pretty soon."
"You appear to have rather small hands," Technus observed. "I could use your assistance with my experiments."
"As long as I'm not the experiment," Phantom agreed. "I have some experience with labs. It could be fun."
"Excellent! Let me show you my designs!"
As long as they were all in his lair anyway, Technus put everyone to work. Youngblood's cowboy costume shifted into a mad-scientist outfit, and his horse, Skelton, into a skeletal mouse nesting in the boy's hair. After a short while, Ember poked her head out the door to listen for music.
"Freakshow's gone," she said. "His circus must be back in the human world again."
"Excellent," Skulker said. "I have prey to stalk." He and Ember said their goodbyes and left the lab.
"Is it okay if I stay here and play scientist some more?" Youngblood asked Technus, who readily agreed. The three of them worked together on Technus' mech suit, with Phantom suggesting some improvements, and Youngblood parroting scientific-sounding terms he didn't really understand.
After a while, Youngblood got bored, and convinced Phantom and Technus to play astronaut with him instead. It had been years since Phantom had played like that, but becoming an astronaut had always been his dream, and it was a lot of fun to goof around with Youngblood in a little space-suit and chimp Skelton.
There were no rules in the Ghost Zone. There were no responsibilities. Everyone did whatever they wanted to do, things they enjoyed, hobbies they didn't have enough time for in life, work they were passionate about. Phantom remembered his parents'... the Fentons' theories about ghost obsessions, but looking around, he honestly thought that none of these ghosts were halfway as obsessive as the Fentons were. They were just having fun passing the infinite time they now had.
Phantom was, too.
Time passed strangely in the Ghost Zone, but Phantom estimated it was about a week before Ember's concert, and, thankfully, no one found out the truth about him during that time. Back in the human world, he didn't think he could have stayed in his ghost form for this long, but that wasn't a problem here.
It was the ectoplasm in the air, he learned, that energized him, and made his ghostly powers stronger and more prominent. Maybe, under different circumstances, that would have made him uncomfortable—actually, he still wasn't sure how he felt about his human traits seeming to fade the longer he stayed there—but the truth was, he rather liked being a ghost.
He liked the freedom, and the lack of any sort of pressure or expectation. Among other ghosts, who were all happy and comfortable, he also felt happy and comfortable.
As Phantom, in the Ghost Zone, he felt accepted. He felt like he belonged.
Almost nothing in the Ghost Zone was time sensitive, so when something happened that was, a lot of ghosts dropped everything to accommodate it. Ember's concert was one of those time sensitive things. Technus finished up his work for the day and just relaxed until it was time for the concert to start. Skulker came back from his hunting trip hours early to watch his girlfriend perform. Phantom was excited for it too. It had been a long time since he'd been to a concert.
An open-air stadium drifted into view, and the ghosts all crowded in, the venue expanding to accommodate them all. Then Ember took the stage with the rest of her band. The music thrummed and the crowd was pumped, and Ember sang her heart out. Phantom was having the time of his afterlife dancing along with his new friends.
She was ten songs into her set when the people sitting at the back of the stadium started to get antsy, and for good reason. It couldn't be heard near the stage, but "Entry of the Gladiators" was playing outside. Word spread as the ghosts near the exits told the ones sitting in front of them, who told those sitting in front of them and so forth. Some ghosts were already starting to disappear, evacuating to the safety of their lairs.
Suddenly, Ember stopped singing. Her hands stilled on her guitar and she cut off the rest of her band. As a musician, she prided herself on her sharp ears, and before the message had reached the front row, she heard the approaching circus music of a familiar foe's black train.
"The concert will resume at a later date!" she announced. "Everyone get to someplace safe! The circus is coming!"
Immediately, the concert-goers did as she said, disappearing and flying away. If they didn't all have intangibility and flight, some of them could have been trampled in the ensuing chaos. Phantom and a few others hung back to help herd people out. Ember herself stayed onstage to keep everyone calm and direct them to the exits while her band left the stage. That was her downfall.
Phantom pressed himself against a wall to stay out of sight and watched as the train flew directly over the stadium. Most of the ghosts still in the stadium ducked for cover, but Ember looked straight up in horror at the ringmaster, Freakshow, clinging to the side of an open boxcar. His skin was so sickly pale he almost looked like a ghost himself, and he wore a long black coat, a top hat, and a wicked, wicked grin. In his hand, he carried a staff with a glowing red orb on the top, and when he shouted down to Ember to come to him, she complied.
The few ghosts still in the stadium, hiding under chairs or against the walls—Phantom included—could only watch as she joined his horrible circus. They were all too afraid to do or say anything, lest they too were enthralled by that wretched human's magical staff. They stayed hidden until the train's caboose disappeared and the circus was gone, back in the human world.
He hated it.
Phantom had already lost his friends once, when the Fentons sent him to the Ghost Zone in the First place. Being unable to do anything as another one of his friends was taken from him was too much to bear.

Lightyear
CONTAINS SPOILERS!
Tumblr media
To Infinity and Beyond!
It’s time to travel back to when Buzz Lightyear wasn’t just another toy on the shelf ended up sparking Andy’s curious young imagination. after Andy had gone through his cowboy phase, he found a new toy, a space astronaut in a green and white space suit that Andy called “BUZZ LIGHTYEAR!”
Lightyear follows Buzz, a man beyond the toy. The man, with the help of a team went into space and accidentally time travelled to a world full of futuristic beings, with the help of the grand daughter of his Commander, Buzz and the hopeful misfit trainees attempt to save not only themselves but their community.
Unlike Toy Story, this Buzz Lightyear is voiced by Chris Evans; the man known for his superhero charisma.
I will admit that Chris Evans voicing Buzz wasn’t on my list. though as others have pointed out, There is Patrick Warburton’s Buzz Lightyear; Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins and of course, the version we have all grown to love, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story franchise. Three versions of Buzz, all based in different variants.
As someone whose curious about voice actors, I do know that sometimes toys aren’t always voiced by those that play them on the screen.
I know in my trailer reaction I vocally denounced this movie. To me, it felt like they had ripped the mystery/not mystery of Buzz Lightyear. I personally felt like the Toy Story franchise had carried the load by revealing enough about our favourite toys.
Lightyears opens with in 1995, Andy saw a movie that became his favourite toy, this is that movie.
Lightyear attempts to give you the past with the present, but it doesn’t quite grasp it in the way it should.
The minute Lightyear starts, I started comparing it to Star Trek before ultimately having an inner thought battle of Star Trek and Star Wars. Which, I know in the earlier Toy Story movies, if I remember correctly there was a blooper reel of Zurg saying “Buzz, I am your father.” So, maybe it’s a call back to that?
The way Lightyear deals with space and exploration, plus the way its characters interact with the unknown planet that they’ve been stranded on. To me, it felt very Star Trek and how the characters were mindful of their place that isn’t there’s. To me, I compared Sox to Data with the way that both characters seemed to know the place and their surroundings a lot better compared to the other characters.
Than when they revealed Zurg, it almost felt like it was mirroring Luke and Darth Vader. You know that scene “No, I am your father.” , yeah. That’s the vibe I got from Buzz and Zurg BUT unlike Star Wars. Buzz and Zurg aren’t father and son, instead it’s old Buzz vs young Buzz. Young Buzz learns how much time travel has taken a toll on his futuristic self and how his older version wants to destroy what the young Buzz has freshly learnt.
To me, this just felt wrong. It felt like Disney had forced Pixar’s hand, it felt like that this movie ruined what was. I understand that 90’s baby’s grew to love Toy Story, I LOVE Toy Story; that movie still holds a soft spot in my 27 year old heart. I kind of see that Disney/Pixar are trying to reach a new generation and want this generation of kids to feel what us 90’s babies had.
Also, as someone who works in a toy story. I will admit that it’s surprising to see how many under 10 year old worship the ground Toy Story is on (Most likely thanks to their parents). So, I understand the kids wanting to join our hype, but this movie just doesn’t capture it the way I hoped it would.
To me, I struggled to understand how Buzz the toy relates to Buzz the man. They almost don’t seem to relate at all. Though I guess both version undertake a whole pushing away people to slowly understanding that they need the company and help of others over time.
Sadly, I hate to be right. This movie was a waste of time especially when you can watch the trailer on repeat, just to save a bit of money in this expensive reality.

You know that some year for some dumb, made-up holiday, Greef 100% has the Anzellans retrofit a speeder with a sidepod and gives it to Din and Grogu.
And Grogu for sure figures out how to turn it on with the force and Din spends half his time tracking down the speeder because it's always upside down on the far edge of the property

Last new year's eve, I made a resolution that I would learn to draw by drawing one page every day of 2023. I was meant to post this recap on January 1st, but it turns out that I have like a full thesis worth of infodumping about this project, so it got pushed back. Art dump time! <3
(editor witch here. This post is LONG. Like, tumblr-can't-save-the-draft-properly long. I've decided to split this into multiple parts to mitigate formatting issues and pulling my hair out when it inevitably comes out wrong. This is part 1 of 2)
Long post incoming! Art under the cut :)
First off we have the OG, the Day 1.
Tumblr media
I try not to pass judgement on my earlier works, because getting more confident with drawing was the entire point of the resolution. However, I can definitely say I've improved a whole bunch since then. It's basically just copied from reference material and the proportions could use a little work.
Fast forward to Day 11 where I had the first piece I thought was kinda good.
Tumblr media
Still goes pretty hard tbh. Love a good beholder.
The first piece I ever got a compliment on was this goopy texture text stuff.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately since all the early drawings were done in pencil, a lot of them have been ravaged by the unholy nature of graphite smearing.
Day 49 is another one of my favourites, I'd just won big in a no stakes poker match against my mates and thought I'd celebrate with a rendition of Mr Green.
Tumblr media
On Day 100 I decided to draw my top 100 favourite pokemon. It took SO much longer than I anticipated, but I still think it was worth it.
Tumblr media
After passing the Day 100 mark I thought it was about time to start varying my materials, so I gave pen drawing a go.
Tumblr media
I learnt crosshatching and absolutely loved it, it's still a staple technique whenever I go for pen exclusively, highly recommend.
By Day 121 I was fed up of fumbling MY way through drawing faces so I decided to really crack down and try and learn.
Tumblr media
As you can tell, it was a long and arduous journey.
By Day 125 I had filled up the first sketchbook and started a new one. As has become tradition, I decided to draw V2 again to see if I'd improved.
Tumblr media
While still not my best (that one's coming up) I'm definitely a lot happier with how this one turned out compared to the first. Being able to see how I'd improved gave me so much inspiration to keep going.
Day 136 was the first time I decided to crack out the coloured pencils, so I commemorated the occasion by depicting one of my homebrew DnD deities bring colour to the material plane.
Tumblr media
Banger after banger Day 137 is still one of my favourites. One day I'll make it into an album cover or something.
Tumblr media
Jeff Bezos exploding in space because his stupid fucking cowboy hat isn't pressurised at all.
Day 142 I started experimenting with including the day number in the art itself, which was a trend I continued throughout the rest of the project.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After seeing Across the Spiderverse, I couldn't just not dedicate two pages and 4 hours of my life to making a tribute piece to the film. I still absolutely adore it, it's easily my second favourite film of all time (right behind the first one).
On Day 163 I recreated the Creation of Adam with my hand and my son.
Tumblr media
This is my son btw:
Tumblr media
I love him dearly and he is an excellent muse (he sits so still!)
Anyway so the next day I drew my top-secret creative process since so many people were asking for it.
Tumblr media
Gettin naked and eating paint in the forest, duh.
Day 178 I made a spidersona, which is kinda my first ever OC? Like official one anyway.
Tumblr media
Gave him a spruce up and a colour for ArtFight (which is SO FUN OMG)
Day 183 was the halfway mark (if you round up from 182.5) so I had to pay homage to the modern classic.
Tumblr media
The face is my favourite bit.
Speaking of ArtFight, I made a whole cast of characters for it! I was a little apprehensive to participate at first, since I still wasn't super confident in my abilities, but it turns out that the community is super welcoming <3. If you wanna see the whole shebang you can check out my profile here, but my most popular character was Alice.
Tumblr media
Which is awesome because we need more rollerblading rep in this world. We have Jet Set Radio and Ramona Flowers, but we need MORE.
I went to see the Barbennheimer double feature and had the time of my life during it, so I had to go home and make art of it.
Tumblr media
Come to think of it, I use art to commemorate a whole lot of stuff. Isn't that neat?
Tumblr media
On Day 221 I had just finished my first real short film for school and I was so happy I had gotten it all done. It was like 30,000 words of documentation, 7 months of work and I had to act as a man in it (damn you gender binary!) So I personified the relief of completion as the spectacle of gratuitous violence.
On Day 230 I finished Act II of Ultrakill for the first time (which at the time was the full game) and I couldn't get over just how hard Gabriel's monologue goes so I had to draw my favourite intro ever.
Tumblr media
I still haven't played layer 7 though so no spoilers pls.
Tumblr media
My son again! This time he's posing like Kali Uchis in her album "Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios)" I won't pretend like I understand what that means, but the album sounds so beautiful and the cover is to die for so I put my son in there.
Tumblr media
Day 235, the first full appearance of Spider-Girl. She's talking to her friend (Batman Beyond) who is trapped by the Riddler and forced to write a analytical essay of 12 Angry Men. Fun little detail with the day number is that Doc Ock actually threw the D at Spider-Girl as an attack.
Tumblr media
frog cowboy :)
I don't remember drawing Day 244, but I think it's actually really nice. Like an abundance of material slowly being wasted on someone hesitant to accept it or something. Idk I was probably sleep deprived to hell.
Tumblr media
It's kinda pretty right? Some little art fairy must have broken in an done it for me
DAY 252! A momentous day. It was my second time switching sketchbooks and so I had to give V2 another crack and...
Tumblr media
Still my favourite drawing of V2 I've ever done. Getting the ricochet coin in there as a framing tool is just so slay.
On Day 254 the pen I was using to take notes at school was finally laid to rest. I captured its final lines in this piece.
Tumblr media
It's actually kinda moving. That pen was so good.
This is the part where I circle back and remind you that this is too long for one post, so check out part two here
