The Social Dilemma
In todays society we see a lot of companies, ranging from social media to shopping websites, having big data and algorithms to help grow their company and people using their company. The reason why the data is so powerful is because for one user on an app, lets say tiktok for example, they try and understand what you like to watch and was is more of an interest in you. Reason why you say that your phones are listening to you, because in reality they are. Cathy O'Neil on the show "The social dilemma," said that " algorithms are opinion, embedded in code." They talk about how they put a goal for that computer to reach and that the computer grows everyday to get you to stay on the app you are on for longer and longer to get you to enjoy their product even more. This is called computer growing. Reason why these algorithms and datas are dangerous is because of the fact that young teens get sucked into thinking that this social media app depicts who they are going to be and depicts their happiness. They talked about how the growing of depression in younger teen girls has grown dramatically over the past several years. Also the growth of suicides for teen girls has more than grown over the past several years. These algorithms can abuse the mindset of youth and get them to be hypnotized in their own phone and never leave that products world and live in it. Can also cause health risks.
Personally, I think that these issues can be solved by first of all, having parents have a good restriction on the use their children have on technology or social media, or even just having a moral talk about how social media/technology does not define them or their life. I find that getting professional help, if they find themselves getting depressed or even, getting helped with being addicted to a certain product.

Have you been trying hard to manifest something into your life but not seeing any results? Been there. Done that. It’s so frustrating when “The Law of Attraction” doesn’t seem to be working because you just feel completely stuck as if the Universe has given up on you. But this is totally fixable, you just have to pinpoint where you went wrong. Sometimes it is merely you in the way and putting too much attention on the belief you don’t have it yet. Here are the 10 most common reasons why The Law of Attraction isn’t working for you. 1. You Have Limiting Beliefs 2. You Are Not Being Consistent 3. You Fear The Future 4. You Have Doubt 5. You Are Not Taking Action 6. You Are Being Impatient 7. You Are Not Letting Go 8. Your Affirmations Needs Tweaking 9. You Are Not Saying “Yes” Enough 10. Lack of Gratitude Are you making these mistakes? If not, what's stopping you to manifest the things you want in life? Social dilemma - Aesthetic documentary
I would suggest all my readers and do watch the documentary social dilemma, which will explain how trickily we all are being used by these large platforms just for their benefit. i.e all social media platforms get the victory by snatching our attention and auctioning this attention to the highest competitors.
you all would have noticed for example in the Instagram reels section their algorithm keeps showing us the reels of our taste and keeps sucking out the most of our valuable time for their benefit.
not only in the reels section but also in explore section they have a perfect algorithm that keeps a record of everything such as the duration of how much time we spend staring at a post, our searches, the persons we follow, the contents we interact with, etc.. and they use these data to keep showing contents and posts similar or connected to that so that they can use us as a product and show us ads in between for their profits.
not only that even if we stay away from these kinda platforms they keep sending us notifications for calling us back because without us surfing on their platforms they can't get a profit.
“If you're not paying for the product, then you are the product”- Daniel Hovermann.

A bit late but The Social Dilemma is worth to watch👌🏻 I have always been aware that these giant platforms’ objective is money & they trade our attention for it. But through this documentary I’m being reminded that this trade system also works for propaganda & fake news. Used to wonder why some people can believe in such a nonsense like flat earth & tadaa turns out a (big) part of it is bcs the ✨algorithm✨ keeps showing them contents about it, consistently & persuasively. Not surprising at all. Agree with many of the points in this documentary: that algorithm is subjective, that AI can’t solve fake news bcs they don’t know what’s the truth, that it’s ok for these platforms to have financial goals (of course) but we need sort of regulation or such which define that it’s not all the time about profit. There must be a time that put national interest & humanity above financial goals - which is more important than the profits of somebody who’s already a billionaire.
Also a bit out of context, I always believe that working in big companies, no matter how positive their company value is - I think capitalism will always be involved. More or less. It’s just hard to believe that the positive value are truly embodied & believed by all the employees, all the decision makers, all the shareholders; and that all the business judgements & decisions are based on these values as the foundation, not profit or growth or good media coverage to increase positive PR. After all it’s a company, not a charity foundation. & I used to think the people in sales / marketing will be the ones who’re most prone to moral dilemmas related to this. Yes I’m aware of this thing yet I still work in a big company, specifically in marketing. I think I’m not privileged & kind enough to do only non-moral-dilemmas things. I know I need to compromise some things. But anyway, what I wanna say is I used to think by being a product designer / software engineer / tech person in general will be less prone to moral dilemmas BUT this movie shows me that it’s not the case... these tech people are the ones that making an algorithm to show people fake news. They’re one of the crucial factors that made it happen.

Cat Pictures Please by Naomi Kritzer
https://www.thesocialdilemma.com/
I think the overall message the author is trying to convey in this story is that the problems we face often times have very simple solutions, however, our emotions get in the way of actually doing something about it. We often ignore the help from others, or we ignore our feelings, pushing them down. As humans in a modern society with social media, it is easy for us to spend our time on the internet absorbing media content, instead of using the internet as means to solve the issues we face. Regardless of that, this story freaked me out a little. The AI being able to intervene with our internet usage hits a little too close to home with the way our current media platforms have been going pertaining to advertisments that are too specific and accurate.
Obviously, I could not ignore the title “Cat Pictures Please.” I love animals so this story immediately caught my eye. I have linked The Social Dilemma’s website because I think this is a documetary everyone needs to watch given our current times. I am not sure what queer theory may have to do with this story besides the one man in it who was afraid to come out. Eventually, he did though, and his life was much happier. There is a lot of stigma behind being gay while also being religious, however, there are many people in the LGBTQ+ community that are religious.

The internet is flooded with news of Meta’s dropping share values. It is no surprise that Meta has been instituting various strategies and initiatives to retain its users. After a billion users plunged from Facebook, Meta decided to not risk the user engagement on its ‘photo-sharing’ platform—Instagram!

person to deal with and on top of that, you’ve already got other competing priorities to deal with. Some parts of the projects are going well despite these challenges, but one of the main deliverables is behind. Self-efficacy impacts how you feel about coping with these challenges, as well as how successful you actually are in doing so. Optimism determines how you interpret these successes and failures. Do you have faith in your own ability to improve the situation? Rather than automatically assume it is your fault, the success cannot be repeated and the failure is even likely to spread beyond this issue? Do you then allow yourself to give up because one part of the project is failing? Or you demonstrate resilience, face the challenge, sustain your efforts and bounce back and beyond? And finally, hope determines your energy and determination to actually set goals and paths to turn the challenges around and achieve success.
