opinion on fyozai ?

I personally don't ship it because I see it as being too competitive and more "I wanna beat you and then keep you as a pet" which isn't how they actually are, I know, but it feels like that every time I think about writing them so I just never do. Also I don't ship Nikolai and Chuuya and I can't ship Dazai with other people without making it a skk polycule because I don't like separating them. Same goes with Fyolai.

I do understand why people ship them tho, I can see the appeal.

They've got that whole arch enemy, can almost read each others mind and are constantly one uping each other, of course it's a ship. They understand each other on a freaky level, they should kiss.

Personally if I were to write an AU where they dated I think I'd probably make them be an on and off thing, neither of their friend groups approve of the relationship, which just makes them want to stay together more but they still break up on a bimonthly basis. Eventually I'd have them decide that this is just a waste of time, trying to hurt the other for whatever the reason this week, breaking up and fucking around before getting back together, it's not worth it.

If they had to be endgame I'd need Fyodor to trust Dazai to not run away and Dazai would need to trust that Fyodor wasn't just using him as means to an end. Which would be a pain in the ass to write in a cute number of chapters we'd be in a 15+ chapter fic at that point. But I'd probably have Fyodor have a breakdown and try to go hide by himself and have Dazai help him through it, at his own detriment of some kind to prove that he's not doing it for self gain. Then have Dazai get real sick so he can't do anything of "value" and have Fyodor take care of him, to prove that he doesn't only want Dazai when he's "useful"

Introduction

Yes, I do. I’m sorry it took so long to give you a reply, but I wanted to give you a comprehensive list and was busy preparing for my last day in high school, and then I got a job 12 hours later, and then I traveled to New York for a couple Broadway workshops. But now that today’s been dealt with, I have my wonderful notes.

So here’s the gist of it. I have three focused reviews on some of my favorite Soukoku fanfics ever, but I felt like copy pasting it would kill you a little, so I’m going to use a simplified format that echoes what I once did for two other ships years ago.

Canon Space

Here I compiled four fanfics that take place in main canon spaces (so not BEAST). While I encourage you to read, I also ask you to make sure to check the tags of the actual work for any possible triggers. Furthermore, the styles these characters are written in, and the way they are portrayed, vary from writer to writer. Some are more “canon” based than others, but they all carry the essence of this ship. And if they don’t in your eyes, then you’re just reading a great novel with Japanese names.

Synopsis: After getting impaled together, basically dying in each others arms in a joint mission with the Port Mafia and the ADA, and getting brought back by Yosano, this shattered Soukoku is asked to go into hiding. In this time, things seem to start healing. But the impending call asking them to return to their positions in their groups haunts them, and when it arrives, things fall apart all over again.

Notes: Rattata is the best character. You cannot negate AbsoluteNegation’s incredible skill. I remember reading this fanfic between the airport and my flight, and when chapter four ended, I had to board the plane, with my shaking hands and quiet sniffles. Please read this one.

Synopsis: Chuuya’s done watching this. Dazai’s literally dating a new girl every week. He dates based on who asks him first that Monday, he breaks up with them that Sunday, and it goes on again. And again. And again. It’s driving him insane. So he does the only thing he can think of to earn himself a break – He asks to date him for that week’s cycle. Dazai’s surprised. Chuuya’s exhausted. But once the sparks fly, they’re unable to be put out.

Notes: I loved this fic because it encapsulates a pretty carefree tone that isn’t associated with Dark Era. It’s pretty smutty, but it’s really lovely to read them. It’s not a reflection of what these characters canonically represent. And while it definitely stays as a loose interpretation of these characters, it keeps the essence that makes this ship so sharp and wonderful. I loved Oda’s appearances too, they made me laugh.

A Doll's House by Abyss_In_WonderLand_likes_sexy_cannibals

Summary: After coming to contact with an ability-powered artifact, Dazai and Chuuya are forced to work together to overcome the ability’s trials, and face the bubbling sentiments they keep trying so hard to ignore.

Notes: While definitely not a character study, this fic goes and shows how wonderfully warm a Double Black fanfic can be. You’ll giggle in some moments, be entranced in others, and it’s just fun. This is for those that aren’t scouring for the angst. This was the first fic that sunk me into a skk fanfiction hunt all throughout the winter holidays.

On Deathless Feet by AbsoluteNegation

Synopsis: Chuuya always knows the monster can get out of control, but it doesn’t get any less surprising when Arahabaki powers through him. For a while though, it’d been comforting to know Dazai could always reign it in, make it go quiet. Because he did when they recently met, when they rose through the ranks, and at the brink of their end. But after years of disconnection, and the consistent waves of betrayal, is Chuuya capable of trusting him? And is Dazai capable of letting him?

Notes: This story is just breathtaking. The writing style is incredibly vast and detailed, which may seem scary when described, but it flows so easily when you read it. The story takes place in an event where Chuuya loses control of Arahabaki in a Post-Port Mafia Soukoku time. But because of its non-linear style, one gets to understand their past experiences with each other in a manner that contextualizes and weighs in the events of their reunion.

Fanon Spaces

Before I begin, I’d like to note that there are so many AUs in this fandom, that I had to really search for the canon ones in my list. So understand that if you want more of these, I DEFINITELY have more of these. Also, again, while I encourage you to read, I also ask you to make sure to check the tags of the actual work for any possible triggers.

I’ll crown your inner child with laurel by acuteguwu

Synopsis: Chuuya has worked in a Michelin Star restaurant. So he really has no place in losing this cooking competition. But a sudden newcomer, who seemingly has no previous experience in the field, seems to want to tell him his bechamel sauce isn’t ready. And really, who does he think he is?

Notes: I read this in two days, and I finished by waking up at four in the morning to finish up before going to a drag queen brunch. So really, my experience was incredible. You get to really know these characters, who are very themselves, and it’s lovely. Please read, it’s so worth it.

Synopsis: Dazai has always been lost on what exactly he wants to be. Chuuya knows exactly what he wants. Working with such incredible differences proves to be a difficult challenge, ending in at least a little bit of violence multiple times, but they make it work. Because their music sounds beautiful. Because they’re better geniuses beside the other. And maybe because once it started, they can’t seem to process this journey can ever end.

Notes: Look, there’s a whole genre of Soukoku music AUs. And I could tell you to read the famous “still, still, still” by icedlightroast, or the even more famous “I Was Screaming Your Name Through The Radio” by ElectricSplatter. Which really, they’re both INCREDIBLE fics that I think you should read (IWSYNTTR literally inspired me to try and write music, which led me to do an album for a school project, so I’m not kidding when I say they’re life changing), but I also know that these are famous fanfics that you can find in almost any big skk reader thread. So disregarding the following recommendation, I try to give you fanfics I found through a long scrolling process.

Everything or Nothing by Wellthathappened (Cataclysmic_Calamity)

Synopsis: Chuuya has never been able to experience much. So when he meets Dazai on the night of orientation, he lets himself explore. And as lips sink into his, and he lets himself be free, Dazai lets him know how unimportant he is by walking away when kids walk in on them. Cut to a month later, they’re paired as roommates, Chuuya’s gotten what Dazai insists is a douchey boyfriend, and Dazai Osamu has to recognize it wasn’t true. It wasn’t a night’s fluke. He really, definitely isn’t straight.

And it’s incredible. Worth every moment. I laughed a lot, and cried a lot. It’s those pieces of work that resound with you that keep you engaged. This one builds off of that.

Inseparable by milwritescausewhynot

Synopsis: Dazai and Chuuya have been joined to the hip since day one. But they’re not best friends. Or enemies. Or, worst of all, lovers. They are, however, great at pranking each other. Until one goes close to dangerous, and things begin getting complicated afterwards.

I really hate it when ppl mischarcterize skk and especially chuuya.like. They only see him as an extension of the ship and not as an actual separate character. Maybe reading stormbringer will cure them

taking a bow bc i have always seen dazai and chuuya as two respective individuals and never conjoined at the hip like 99.9% of skk shippers

also the mischaracterization is so baddd even in the ship omfg no he would not take fun in actively torturing dazai bffr😭 my least fav take is that he sobbed for like days after dazai left the pm BE SO FR HE POPPED THAT ‘79 PETRUS AND CALLED AKUTAGAWA OVER SO THEY COULD CELEBRATE. alternatively. he was likely cursing dazai out with the most horrible slurs uttered by mankind bc can u just imagine coming back from ur tiring mission overseas absolutely fucking exhausted and abt to put in a request for vacation when ur executive partner straight up disappears and the sudden workload he leaves in his wake forces u into overtime for MONTHS on end and there’s a search for his head bc ur boss is afraid he’ll leak mafia secrets? no wonder chuuya kicked dazai’s stomach into the wall when he saw him again, he probably remembered having finger cramps for weeks on end bc of all the paperwork he had to file bc of him

A really irritating thing about ship critical people (see: grinch, wet blanket) is their belief that if a popular ship gets any development or content as the story goes on its queerbait or fanservice to appease shippers cause the creators saw how popular they were. And my issue with that claim is that how do you know that the duo was never supposed to be developed?

Like there is a reason why it's such a popular ship in the first place right? Like Dazai has 20 popular ships but skk is still ahead by almost 10k fics on any given day of the week. It's cause people saw something there. Right? Cause why else would skk be more popular than any other ship when Dazai spends loads more time with other people?

We always knew they have a complicated backstory.

We knew they had unconditional trust.

We knew Dazai was soft with Chuuya from the manga and Chuuya was concerned about Dazai.

We knew Dazai stayed behind in the dungeon to see him.

We knew that their dynamic was the foundation for the current sskk generation, aka the actual main characters.

Is it really that hard to believe that maybe Dazai and Chuuya were always going to be explored as a duo? Especially when Asagiri and Harukawa admitted to spending the most amount of time on Chuuya's design and character so that it compliments Dazai's and their partnership? So now any interaction they have is written off as fanservice or bait even when it adds to the lore, to their characters or to the story. Like where do you get off with this idea that just because a ship managed to become popular any and all interaction they have or canon content for it is suddenly no longer acceptable and just fanservice?

Fyolai have content and some noticeable subtext and no one is losing their shit trying to write it off but skk have even the most basic interactions or screentime together and all the pretentious policing of mlm content consumption comes pouring out. Weird.

Fanfic recommendation time!

Fandom: Bungo Stray Dogs

Ship: Soukoku

Rating: 10/10

Yeah, I really couldn't make a fanfic rec blog and just... not talk about this one. Oh, this one. I think it might be the first time I felt so haunted by any piece of literature, ever. It was outrageously good.

I had it stuck in my mind for like, almost two entire weeks after completing it. There's just some terrifying (beautiful) quality about the writing style and the story that makes your mind want to reread it again, and again, and again.

The fic is titled off to the races and was written by besselfcn on ao3. It's rated E (I swear I don't only read E stuff...) and can be pretty nasty at times, especially with the triggering content, but to me it's part of what makes this fic so sickeningly great.

As always, I won't go into spoiler territory, it's a horse racing AU! I adore the concept! But there is quite a lot of possibly shocking stuff, so be kind to yourself! But yeah, undeniably one of my top ten ambiguous ending skk favourites.

BSD SEASON 5 EP 8

WE FUCKING WON BOYSSSSSSSS!!!!!

I think they did everything right! The Kenji Tecchou fight was dope, Tecchou said the thing he said the for "five minutes I will put Jounno above justice" thing we are winning so hard right now, the VISUALS of the Kenji backstory were so pretty!! He looked so cool! They went so hard on his animation! I absolutely love it when shows do small style changes when portraying stuff and they did it so cooly! I am so happy!!

(Another little thing that happened at the start, I love those little chibi's they did of Yosano Kouyou and Akutagawa, they were so cute. Though I'm not entirely sure why Kouyou is there, didn't they only know each other for like, one conversation? But anyways.)

Also, someone in this studio must really like Tecchou, cause mans was fucking gorgeous. Like, he's always gorgeous but damn.

Speaking of pretty people, Teruko!! They draw her so pretty and I am so happy!

Moving away from the airport. Meursault! Holy Shit they have not stopped giving out W's for Meursault! We got the Cat girl! And she honestly didn't feel too Deus Ex Machina-y! When I first heard of her I kinda felt like she was like that, but she wasn't! Her existence makes sense! The animations are still going strong, and it was all just awesome!

And of course,

THE CHAPTER 101 SCENE BABYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THEY DID IT GOOD! FYODOR HAD EMOTIONS! CHUUYA WAS ACTUALLY GROWLING AND NOT DOING WHATEVER THE FUCK THAT EEYAH THING WAS! THE DAZAI SPEECH!! HOLY FUCK THE DAZAI SPEECH!!!

They did so good on the Dazai speech! Maybe I have to wait to see the thoughts of the skk fans that really like the ship and don't just passively like it as I do, but I think they did wonderful! Dazai closing his eyes and looking deep in thought and reminiscing as you hear Chuuya fucking drowning in the background, the music, his tone of voice, just, fucking everything man! I think that was one of the best possible outcomes for this scene!! I am very happy with this!!

At the end with Aya and Bram they were being adorable and I love them, best duo. But they also had this conversation about the sword which revealed some information that I did not know about before, and it just so happens that that information really helped support this somewhat-not-serious-but-it-is-serious-now theory I had about Fyodor's ability, so I am going to be making a separate post about that.

Overall? That was great!! Everything was awesome and I am so happy with everything they have done for this episode! I loved this! Excited to see this quality hopefully last till the end of this season! See you next week!
