Black, divorced, formerly teen parents, Black lgbt+ with white partners
tiredandtears asked:
Hi, I am currently working on a story about a single black mother who left her son’s father (who is also black) on amicable terms a couple years before the story’s beginning. The mother is the main parenting figure in the son’s life, but she keeps in contact with the father who lives in the next town or two over and visits often. They’re friendly with each other and co-parent as best they can.
Something that I am worried about is that when I started outlining the story, I wrote that they had their son a year or so after graduating high school, so they both started working to support their son. I’m nervous that this might relate to a stereotype that black people have unplanned children as older teens/young adults. (I’m not sure if that is a common stereotype, but I have heard it voiced in the past.)
Another thing I’m a little nervous about is that as the mother works, she starts to fall for one of her coworkers (a white bisexual woman). I’m scared that this could play into the somewhat common occurrence that black LGBTQ+ characters only seem to appear when they have a white partner, and I don’t want to add to that if it is indeed an issue.
Teen Black parents
There is indeed a stereotype that young Black people are mothers / parents. There’s a lot more to this, but part of the matter comes from the adultification of Black children, especially girls in this case. There’s also this insistence, within and outside the community, that Black girls are “fast” or “act grown.” This hypersexualizes Black minors. I’ve heard many stories of a young Black girl being somewhere with their baby sibling / cousin / any young child and having strangers assume she is the parent, even when they’re children or teenagers themselves. It’s absolutely happened to me when I was younger, too.
Based on birth rate statistics from the CDC, there are reportedly more BIPOC teen parents than white ones in the USA. At the same time, teen birth rates have also decreased in recent years (at the time of this post). But it’s not about whether Black teen parents exist, as teen parents exist in all races. More than white does not mean that every young Black girl / person should be assumed to be a teen parent.
Consider that:
There’s nothing wrong with people who may “fit” stereotypes. I’ve talked about this extensively here. They’re people too, even if society places a stigma or judgment of them.
There is usually nuance to any “stereotype”, such as in discrepancies in access to proper birth control or bc education, underreported data, etc. And on that note
Check your intentions as well as your logic in writing on these topics. Are you the right voice? How far are you exploring the depths of the issue? You’ll need to be well-researched when making commentary on any matter, especially from an outside perspective.
Depicting Black teen parents may not be well received by Black readers. And it’s well within their rights to be uncomfortable. You could avoid the matter completely by making them fairly young parents, but not teenagers.
Long story short; if you’re going to write Black teen parents, portray these parents respectfully without demonizing their actions. They sound like responsible and good parents, and likely have a support group to help them be that way. If you wanted, you could add in a white friend or two that were also teen parents. Still, some people will not be fans of someone outside of the group writing on this. And question what their intentions are.

Black lgbtqia+ with white partner
Well. interracial lbtqia+ couples absolutely exist! But since you’re worried, and I do think it’s lacking in media, it would absolutely help to add in Black lgbtqia+ representation.
~Mod Colette
Queer representation of exclusively Black couples is rare. Why can’t the new love interest also be Black, too?
-Mod Norma
It seems to me that representation in romance, especially for queer romance is either white or with one white love interest. Rarely does it not involve at least one white love interest. It would be refreshing to have her have a Black love interest especially. It would be very welcome.

Jason cursed. This is on par for most of his evenings, as it was rare that he ever got a peaceful night. However, this? This takes the goddamn cake and smashes it on his face.
Red Hood stood, with a portable wet vacuum in his halo bed hands, cursing everything in the world as he cleaned and followed the small puddles of Lazarus water. The people in the streets give him a wide berth, having long learned the intricacies of Red101: if the Red Hood is doing weird shit but there’s no gun in his hand, you make sure you’re not the reason he’ll have a gun in his hand.
“O, you there?”
“Copy.”
“Mark this priority, would you?” His voice is tense, pissed. “Some bastard’s dripping Lazarus water all over my territory.”
A pause.
Oracle’s calm voice flowed through his helmet, “Then we’ll have to watch out for League influence. I’ll let the others know. Red Robin?”
Red Robin chimed in, “Yeah, already on it. It’s weird though, Ra’s isn’t supposed to be here for another two and a half weeks.”
“And how would you know about my grandfather’s movements?”
“Careful, Robin, I might become your grandma!” Red Robin chirped sadistically, before clicking off his comms, snickering at Robin’s spluttering.
“Jesus fuck. I’ll try to hunt down the bastard from the ground. O?”
“Can’t help you. The cameras around your area has been scrambled for the last half an hour.”
“Shit.” Red Hood tensed, one hand going for his pistol as the street’s current inhabitants wisely vacated the area.
“Hood. Don’t go in alone. It could be a trap.”
“Whatever, B, you’re not the boss of me.”
“Give me three minutes. I’m close by. Do not go in without back up, little wing.” Nightwing piped in, and Red Hood could hear the faint whooshing noises of a quiet grapple.
“Cass and I are close by as well. Staking out a place but we could be on standby if needed.”
Two taps. Cass’ tacit agreement.
“Got it.”
When Nightwing gets there, they follow the trail into a dead end with no sign of any scaling of the wall or secret passages.
“Fuck! What the fuck are we chasing, a ghost?”
“Don’t even joke like that-” Nightwing said. “You’ll set Red off again.”
Jason kicked at the wall.
“Fuck!”
——
On the other side of the wall, thirty minutes earlier:
“Life is like a hurricane, here in Duckberg…” Danny mumbled as he stumbled away. He’d saved his alley kids from a pretty serious mugging that ended with a stabbing that Danny foolishly allowed to touch him because he wanted to keep the wicked looking knife. Normally, he’d be able to brush this off, but with his recent injuries, mental stress, and the lack of food that is the hallmark of a homeless teenager, Danny barely kept himself conscious as he stumbled into a particularly dense in ectoplasm dead end.
“Napping place… napping place…” Danny mumbled before eyeing the brick wall. Yeah, okay, he’s slept in weirder places. He could sleep in the dumpster, but… he’d smell and Danny could not handle an infection. So, he went intangible, invisible, and pulled the knife out of his body. As he settled in (quite literally into) the stone wall for his nap, Danny manages to mold his ectoplasm to hold his cut up stomach together.
Danny allows sleep to take him, blissfully unaware of the glowing green puddles of ghost blood he’d left behind.
——
Jason, terrified: he’s in the walls!! He’s in the fucking walls!
Danny, quoting vines and tiktoks while napping in walls for that back support option: thanks for checking in! I’m still a piece of GaRBaGe.

In the black manosphere
It’s a common theme that African American women refuse to be held accountable for their actions, something collectively observed millions of times. You’d think after a day, after 10PM I’d finally be able to relax without being nagged but nope. My mom, despite telling her repeatedly for years to properly manage her passwords ... continues to not listen then she gets mad, throws temper tantrums and blames everyone but herself when she can’t login and/or has to change passwords and pass security checks. Having no husband, I’m the one who gets interrupted.
Part 2.
I’ve had a Roku for several years now. Not once have I ever been logged out of any of my TV/streaming services unless I did so deliberately or performed a hard reboot of the device. Miraculously though, my mom is somehow routinely logged out of hers and every time swears she didn’t log out herself, proving again, that they refuse to be held accountable for their actions.
Addendum
Her incompetence with basic technology in general is astounding. She has trouble navigating a simple Roku remote, doesn’t know the difference between the home and left arrow key. She can barely use her smart phone or efficiently check and search her emails. It seems like she’s having to reset at least one password weekly because she constantly forgets them. She’s equally embarrassing in the car, where she does things like randomly adjusts the AC controls doing dumb crap like having the heat on in the dead of summer and doesn’t use the radio presets. She’s also a horrible driver, I laugh at her parking skills/etiquette and I’m terrified to be in the car with her.

Things James Potter Has Said
Moony either you remove your damn shoes before you enter the dorm or I Vanish them. How the fuck are they covered so much dirt, you don't even go near the Quidditch pitch!
Sirius, you will sit down and let me put your hair up in a bun or so help me Gods i will shave it all off. (*smirk* you wouldn't. You love my hair more than I do.)
I swear if Gerard (gryffindor seeker) doesn't get his shit together before the Ravenclaw match I'm going to make him cry with the amount of training I pile on his head.
No, Evans! Irving's Law clearly states that *winds off into the accurate statement of said ridiculously complicated law* and you cannot use 7x² divide the integral of y, that doesn't work here! (He's arguing NEWT Arithmancy with her)
Sirius I'm boorreedddddddd! ... *doe eyes* can we kiss? (Fuck yeah, get over here)
*stares at Sirius* that is a terrible idea... Let's do it.
REMUS! GO THE FUCK TO SLEEP!
Peter, you have Charms homework. Play with Lady Charlotte (the dorm cat) after you finish that.
Sirius. No.
Remus. No.
Peter. No.
I am the only one that gives a shit about how clean the dorm is. Nobody else ever helps me. Ingrates, all of you!
Marlene I swear to fuck- just ask them out, shit's sake! (She's pining after Dorcas)
Do you think I can surf down the enchanted staircases without falling off the surfboard? (*Panicked Sirius noises*)
*scoffs* whatever the shit this is, it sure as fuck isn't tea. Fucking British people, don't even know how to make proper chai.
Gods dammit Sirius—
Remus if you don't eat everything on your plate I swear on my family's honour I will hold you down and force feed you like my mother used to do to me.
WHERE IS MY BOX SET OF THE LORD OF THE RINGS?! (Sirius hid it because James wasn't giving him attention. The trick backfired: James completely ignored him. Not for long tho; he wants kisses from Sirius.)
(Peter calls him a jock) James: *gasps in outrage* you take that back! Take that back right the fuck now, I am an out and proud nerd, how dare you—
*purrs like a cat and melts into a puddle of goo when Sirius rubs his hair and neck*
(marauders call him for a prank) nope. Not today, I'm studying. I have got to beat Lily in the Charms test tomorrow, or else I won't be able to show my face for the rest of the week out of sheer embarrassment.
Fuck's sake, Sirius! I look like I've been mauled! How am I supposed to hide the hickeys?!
