18. What are they like when they're drunk? How do they act together? & when 1 is drunk, while the other one's sober?

19. What do they fight about most often? (Alternative: what was their biggest fight?)

Glorfindel and Erestor are very different people, so I imagine their fights to mostly be small and/or petty ones where they misstep over things that may be minor to them but is a big deal for the other. Erestor is more particular and is more likely the first to raise an issue, but it is also thanks to this that their relationship settled early. They might have fought a lot in their first few years—about the cleanliness of rooms, how late is late on times agreed, how much they require from a partner—but they were important fights that ensured they got things right for one another.

Where I think Glorfindel would put his foot down would be related to people. Erestor is old, somewhat jaded, and even in his younger days he's never one to give too much attention to the careabouts of individual people. He is a practical, big picture kind of guy, and while he is never one to be malicious, he is also not naturally sympathetic. Although he never means to, there might have been times when his seeming lack of care can tick Glorfindel off, and they disagree on how much of themselves they are willing to give to other people.

Their biggest fight though I would say would've been triggered by danger. Glorfindel's work is to protect, but how he does so especially under the employ of whatever ruler Erestor counsels, Erestor (by his own occupation) has a say. There might have been a time when Erestor thought Glorfindel's approach was unnecessarily reckless and Glorfindel was injured in the process. Once Glorfindel was well enough for it, you can bet they fought about it.

25. (a lil sappy, but..) What do they like about each other?

It's wonderful that this question got asked together with 19, because the answers are two sides of the same coin! 💛

Glorfindel and Erestor are very different, but it's also these differences that they admire and grew to love in the other.

Glorfindel, maybe unexpectedly for many people in Rivendell, has a quirky sense of humour. Erestor amuses him immensely, opinions and sharp edges and all, and so I imagine he stuck to Erestor early. He likes that Erestor is difficult and speaks his mind, that he takes a stand despite opposing voices, which is a refreshing thing considering Glorfindel himself would naturally lean towards harmony and diplomacy.

As for Erestor, similarly, he respects Glorfindel for his capacity to care enough about Middle-earth to constantly be at the frontline of its wars. He admires Glorfindel for his ability to inspire people even in the darkest of times. But also, one of my longest running jokes about Erestor is that out of all the things one can say about Glorfindel's goodness, his courage, how he was chosen by the Valar because of his virtue, even down to how he is just a very reliable colleague, the fact of the matter is that Erestor was attracted to Glorfindel primarily for his looks. 😂 Erestor hates that he—with his supposed intellect, wisdom, even the prestige and dignity of his office—would ever be so basic, but alas, he is not immune to the charms of the renowned hero of Gondolin. Sunkissed skin, golden hair, that dashing smile—ugh, Erestor, how easy can you be? He can never live it down. 😂😂😂

I wanted to share the fandom and fanfiction memes I made in 2023, so here they are! [Contains minor spoilers for the fics Óhchikaape (chapter 25) and Daughters of Therindë (chapter 11).]

I made this meme because I was VERY overwhelmed with all of the fandom content and news happening that day in my world XD So many different fandoms! So much stuff! I actually made a post with this meme that evening, naively thinking that it wouldn't blow up. It did. (And it's my most popular post to this day!)

waitingfover is one of my fav Silm fic authors, and they write a lot of great AUs and oneshot collections. I haven't posted this meme anywhere before now, but it's one of the fandom/fanfiction memes I made this year, so I'm including it in this post. (I now think of this meme whenever I see Ocean Spray juice at the grocery store XD)

5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?

Sunblind by Fleet Foxes, thanks to The Myth Hanging Heavy Over You, of course.

For a second answer since it got asked twice, Anthem by Leonard Cohen. Bird imagery of course, and it's a very Tolkien song in general, all about finding beauty and love in a broken world.

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

Pulling from The Myth Hanging Heavy Over You again, she cries a lot but really didn't want Elros and Elrond to know. Hence leaving in the middle of the night to cry over (and eat) the lembas she can't give to Earendil, and the handkerchiefs hidden in every piece of furniture in their house so she can quickly dry her tears at any moment.

13. What's an emoji, an emoticon and/or any symbol that reminds you of this character or you think the character would use a lot?

It's a wonderful day in Gillond, and you are a horrible 🪿

14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character.

I think she makes a point in Valinor to wear as little white as possible. Both because it reminds her of the Kinslaying and her attempted suicide, and because she's a bit miffed at how she got turned into a symbol. Turns out you can wear as technicolor an ensemble as you want, and it'll still look good in Silmaril-light.

She absolutely plays up the bird motifs for formal events though. Helps that she has an infinite source of feathers from her friends!

22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to ths character? Something you don't like?

Like: giving her friends and a community in Valinor! I don't know why it seems like the default is to make her completely isolated at her tower aside from Earendil, but it bugs me.

Dislike: aside from the obvious (bashing her to make the Feanorians look better), silver-haired Elwing just irks me the wrong way for no real reason. Dark hair just seems right! Although my personal image of her does have a single streak of white-silver hair among the dark.

25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?

I first read the Silm some 15 years ago so I honestly don't remember? Probably something along the lines of "aw that's sad".

Now: must protecc. Let her be angry! Let her look at the world that failed her and twisted her into an instrument of fate and demand it do better! Let her look in the eyes of her childhood monsters who ruined her life twice and know it doesn't matter to her whether she forgives them or not, because she's healed regardless!

So, now that it's over here are some of my favorite pieces from tolkientober!

Day 6 - song. Maglor singing his angsty songs on the shore was all I could think abt lol

Day 9 - star. Cliche but star of eärendil + the kidnap family cuz I'm obsessed with them sorry

Day 10 - evil. Annatar & Celembrimbor !! They make me a Bit insane

Day 11 - king - Now the cliché thing would be just aragorn (return of the king is literally about him) but I love the silm too much to not include my elves so. My actual fav drawing in this entire thing !!! Colors!!!!

Day 14 - love. Celeborn + Galadriel getting married in traditional Tang dynasty clothes cuz of Reasons. Last colored one and I love this one too !!

Day 15 - tree. Coming up w something for this was hard but I had just watched fotr extended edition and thought about these parallels

Day 25 - Grow(th) . I had just read Little Bird and had feels about dad Amras w Elwing so I did this lol

Day 27 - fight. A silly joke cuz Turgon fighting his bisexuality is funny to me (the one talking is aredhel btw)

I have two more but those will be their own separate posts!

4. How do you choose which fics to write?

Just inspiration really, tbh! I have six currently-active WIPs (and one that’s been put on the back burner for now) so deciding which of those to work on on any given day is just a matter of which I hate least at the time. When it comes to starting a new fic, I have SO MANY ideas jotted down that I’m really excited about, so I am constantly restraining myself from not starting another WIP! Sometimes I use them to bribe myself: “finish this one and then you can start that really exciting one I promise”. But sometimes I fall to temptation and the list gets longer.

25. What’s your favorite part of the writing process (worldbuilding, brainstorming/outlining, writing, editing, etc)?

It’s got to be the actual writing. Researching and outlining can be very fun, especially when I get excited about a particular idea (the tfs page in my notes app has so many random caps locks and exclamation marks), but they also just feel like whetting my appetite for the actual thing. Which is often horrible and painful and the worst, but when it goes well and you’ve produced a lovely profound sentence or a very moving interesting scene or whatever it’s the best feeling in the entire world! a controversial take, but I like editing, too! It’s definitely a lot easier than writing a first draft, but it also requires me to be more ruthless with myself.

46. If you could only write one type of AU for the rest of your life, what would it be?

What are the types of AU? My own categorisation is into “setting change” AUs like modern AUs etc and “canon divergence” AUs – is that the usual mode of division? Anyway, it would have to be the canon divergence AUs. I think setting change AUs are fun and very creative and I’d love to try my hand at one someday, but especially in the silm fandom the canon divergence ones are SO MUCH FUN and make you think SO HARD. I have three going at the moment: tfs of course, in which Beren and Lúthien steal two Silmarils, the Maedhros doesn’t swear the oath AU, and the Maedhros dies in the Nirnaeth AU, and they all have to be so strongly in conversation with canon and examine character dynamics so carefully, I love it.

that thing where a character has to give up their weapons but they keep pulling out more knives and guns and throwing stars etc from increasingly weird places in their clothes? that's maglor but with musical instruments. he keeps emergency flutes strapped to his legs in case nelyo confiscates his harp at 3am because he won't stop playing

4. Fëanor, Fingolfin or Finarfin - who are you most like in real life?

honestly its an even split between finarfin and feanor (sorry nolo) because like. i'm very much the sane/reasonable one when i go places but there Are feanor days. also feanor seems to be The adhd mood [for me at least].

20 Funniest moment in the Silm?

okay this one is technically tied for two. either the moment where beren goes "even now it is in my hand" reveals to have no hand (because we Stan an icon) and* where nellas is giving her account of turin to thingol and thingol makes a Dad Joke

23. Who is Gil-galad’s father?

Genuinely, from the bottom of my heart: it depends on the fic. mostly because, i like playing with dynamics with other characters and seeing how those change depending on the parents.(like. my mental image of gil son of fingon is different from gil son of lalwen or gil son of orodreth or gil son of russingon etc etc).

but although minor things about their personalities/temperments change, ultimately i believe that gil-galad's being a good king was because of Him and not his family.

that being said... i am particularly partial to gil son of fingon (and/or russingon although i tend to hc mae being aroace) because of the Narrative Parallels of the descendents of fingolfin being high-kings in the east and finarfin being high king in the west.

+ gil son of fingon challenging sauron and fingolfin challenging morgoth and fingon fighting gothmog is *chef’s kiss*

also i have to jump through way less hurdles when it comes to the actual technicalities of him being the high-king lol.

25. What would you most like to see in a tv series or film based on the Silmarillion?

*deep sigh* I didn't think i would have to say this, in the year of our lord two thousand and twenty two, but: LONG! HAIR! FOR! ELVES!

Jokes aside though, I would like to see more about the Great Journey, I feel like one could make a reallly compelling story out of that without wrecking the entire narrative.

At first I thought this meant he was just spewing the most foul, vile language to make the Valar clutch their pearls.

His seven sons leapt straightway to his side and took the selfsame vow together, and red as blood shone their drawn swords in the glare of the torches. They swore an oath which none shall break, and none should take, by the name even of Ilúvatar, calling the Everlasting Dark upon them if they kept it not; and Manwë they named in witness, and Varda, and the hallowed mountain of Taniquetil, vowing to pursue with vengeance and hatred to the ends of the World Vala, Demon, Elf or Man as yet unborn, or any creature, great or small, good or evil, that time should bring forth unto the end of days, whoso should hold or take or keep a Silmaril from their possession.

Goddamn. This is. Um. Not great? The Feanorians sure take their business seriously.

Thus spoke Maedhros and Maglor and Celegorm, Curufin and Caranthir, Amrod and Amras, princes of the Noldor;

Gotta remember those names. Tall, singer, fair, dark, crafty, and the twins.

and many quailed to hear the dread words. For so sworn, good or evil, an oath may not be broken, and it shall pursue oathkeeper and oathbreaker to the world's end. Fingolfin and Turgon his son therefore spoke against Fëanor, and fierce words awoke, so that once again wrath came near to the edge of swords.

Oh hey, it’s Fingolfin. Second most dramatic of Finwe’s sons, after Feanor.

But Finarfin spoke softly, as was his wont, and sought to calm the Noldor, persuading them to pause and ponder ere deeds were done that could not be undone; and Orodreth, alone of his sons, spoke in like manner. Finrod was with Turgon, his friend; but Galadriel, the only woman of the Noldor to stand that day tall and valiant among the contending princes, was eager to be gone.

Where does Galadriel want to go? Away from Aman? Back to Middle Earth? Away from the Drama Bros?

No oaths she swore, but the words of Fëanor concerning Middle-earth had kindled in her heart, for she yearned to see the wide unguarded lands and to rule there a realm at her own will. Of like mind with Galadriel was Fingon Fingolfin's son, being moved also by Fëanor’s words, though he loved him little; and with Fingon stood as they ever did Angrod and Aegnor, sons of Finarfin. But these held their peace and spoke not against their fathers.

I guess it was the first two.

So we’ve got: with Feanor - Feanor’s sons, Galadriel. With Fingolfin - Turgon, Finrod, Fingon.* With Finarfin - Orodreth, Angrod,* Aegnor.* *would rather be with Galadriel.

Oh, I still need to do 25! You’re the second person to ask for it. It’s an excellent, rich question and I need to think about it some more, so I’ll do 3 for now.

3) Favourite Character?

Oh, I’ve got so many that it’s hard to pick just one. I’ve got characters that I like a lot in the book, but don’t have as many headcanons or fic ideas about (Beren and Lúthien, Nerdanel); characters who I have strong feels for and many fic ideas about even though (or even because) I don’t like things they do (Maedhros and Maglor - they are almost certainly the characters I spend the most time thinking about, because the end of their story is heartwrenching and I need them to eventually find healing) and ones who I both like and consider excellent fic fodder (Eärendil, Elwing, Finrod). Aredhel’s another favourite.

On the whole, it’s probably close between between Eärendil and Finrod.

For my favourite, I’d have to say Eärendil. Eärendil because there’s such a poignancy and tragedy to his story - he loves Middle-earth, he travels far and wide a probably sees more of it than any other character in The Silmarillion, he journeys to Valinor for love of Middle-earth and its people - and because of that he is separated from it forever; he can see it, he can be a symbol of hope to it, but he can never be part of it. It’s very much remeniscent of Frodo’s I tried to save the Shire, and it has been saved, but not for me. And the sheer heart-wrenching difficulty of his petition to the Valar deserves more recognition. He is asking for mercy on behalf of everyone, Noldor, Sindar, Edain, without exception; he is asking for mercy for, among others, the Fëanorians, who have murdered his people and his friends and - to the best of his knowledge, at this time - his sons. It’s an absolutely extraordinary act of grace. And he thinks he’s going to die for it; and he’s ready to die, because in making his plea he’s had to let go of everything else he is - leader, friend, husband, father. Not the giving up of love, but the allowing of particular, individual loves to be swallowed up in a love for everyone and everything in Middle-earth. And I can’t help also thinking of his fate in terms of substitutionary atonement, because while his fate as a star isn’t a punishment (it comes across as more of a compromise on the part of the Valar, a way to let him still see Middle-earth and not be wholly parted from it) it still feels like he is, in a sense, taking the exile of the Noldor upon himself in his exile from Middle-earth. And all this, and all that his mission and plea cost Eärendil, makes it all the more painful to me that Maedhros and Maglor, in the end, reject that grace.

Finrod I love because he’s sych a good and kind person, and such an intellectually curious one - and he’s interested principally in people, and especially in Men - us! Think of practically any characteristic of present-day life, or of human history and thought, and there’s a strong probability you could have a fascinating conversation with Finrod about it. Think of any of the characters ftom LOTR who go to Valinor, and it’s very easy to see Finrod being delighted to meet them and having wonderful conversations with them. Name pretty much any character in the Silm whose personality we get any sense of, and I can imagine at least a bit of a conversation or interaction between them and Finrod. As a fanfic opportunity, he’s delightfully gregarious in that way. (He is not a flake, however, and I do get tired of fics writing him that way! He’s probably the most skillful, thoughtful, and competent of the Finwëans in the First Age, between being on good terms with the Doriathrins, learning about Nargothrond from Thingol, working with the dwarves on its construction, being on good enough terms with the Laiquendi that he can intercede with them on behalf of the Edain, convincing Thingol to let the Haladin settle in Brethil, and having the largest realm of any if the Finwëans precisely because he is on good terms with the Sindar and is trusted rather than regarded as an inteloper. And being close with Cirdan and the Falathrim as well. It’s no coincidence that all the diplomatic relationships in Beleriand start falling apart after his death.)

me two weeks ago: god these headcanons are burning a hole in my brain and there’s no way i can work them all into these fic ideas. i’ll just start up a blog to get them down and -

okay, so with this blog blowing up way out of what i expected its proportions to be, i guess it’s time to introduce myself or something

hi! i’m mitzi, 25, they/them pronouns. i had a pretty active tumblr from early 2014 to mid 2018, when a growing sense of general malaise and a series of increasingly bullshit tumblr updates combined to drive me to give up on my main. i still refuse to redownload the app. i was still intermittently active until the great adult content ban, at which point i left this hellsite for good

fast forward to last autumn, when in the middle of trying and failing to do distance learning i abruptly remembered the silm exists and spent a literal month reading all the fic i missed since i was last in the fandom. over the course of that reading, i naturally began to both remember my old takes and develop some new ones. as it became increasingly obvious that online uni just wasn’t working out for me, i found myself having way too much time to think about terrible headcanons about terrible elves

trouble is, i no longer had a place to put them. twitter just isn’t as conducive to my trademark long rambling meta/fic hybrid posts, and those tend to be a bit slapdash for ao3? i really wanted to interact with the community, so i started planning my own fics, but those take a while to make if you’re me and are incapable of having less than three active projects running at once. for a while i was gonna check out whatever community there is on pillowfort, but then that stopped being an option

then! two-ish weeks ago, in a fit of sleep-deprived ennui, i did what i swore i would never do and made a new tumblr account. i started posting a headcanon a day, just to get them out of my head, but it turns out people like them??? a lot??? and i’m following people, and i’m liking posts on tumblrs i’ve been flicking through since i got back into the fandom, and i’m reblogging stuff, and i’m reluctantly ignoring stuff that doesn’t fit my theme, and oh god i have a tumblr again

Forgiveness and Tolerance in Islam: Islam - a religion of tolerance

Islam is a word derived from the root words silm and salamah. It means surrendering, guiding to peace and contentment, and establishing security and accord.

Islam is a religion of security, safety, and peace. These principles permeate the lives of Muslims. When Muslims stand to pray, they cut their connection with this world, turning to their Lord in faith and obedience, and standing at attention in His presence. Completing the prayer, as if they were returning back to life, they greet those on their right and left by wishing peace: “Remain safe and in peace.” With a wish for safety and security, peace and contentment, they return to the ordinary world once again.

Greeting and wishing safety and security for others is considered one of the most beneficial acts in Islam. When asked which act in Islam is the most beneficial, the Prophet replied,

“Feeding others and greeting those you know and those you do not know.”[ Abu Dawud, Adab, 142. ]

Accusing Islam of terrorism

How unfortunate it is that Islam, which is based on this understanding and spirit, is shown by some circles to be synonymous with terrorism.

This is a great historical mistake; wrapping a system based on safety and trust in a veil of terrorism just shows that the spirit of Islam remains unknown. If one were to seek the true face of Islam in its own sources, history, and true representatives, then one would discover that it contains no harshness, cruelty, or fanaticism. They spent their lives preaching tolerance, and each became a legend in his own time as an embodiment of love and tolerance.

Jihad can be a matter of selfdefense or of removing obstacles between God and human free choice. Our history is full of examples that show how this principle has been implemented in life.

Of course there are and should be occasions where war is unavoidable. However, the Qur'anic verses on jihad that were revealed for particular conditions have been generalized by some shortsighted individuals. Whereas in actual fact war is a matter of secondary importance, it has been given priority as an essential issue by these people. Such people do not understand the true meaning and spirit of Islam. Their failure to establish a proper balance between what is primary and what is secondary leads others to conclude that Islam advocates malice and hatred in the soul, whereas true Muslims are full of love and affection for all creation. Regarding this, how apt is the following couplet:

Muhammad was born out of love,

What can be born out of love without Muhammad?

Love is the essence of creation

The Pride of Humanity was a man of love and affection. One of his names was Habibullah (the Beloved of God). In addition to meaning one who loves, habib means one who is loved, one who loves God, and one who is loved by God. Sufi masters like Imam Rabbani, Mawlana Khalid, and Shah Waliyyullah state that love is the ultimate station of the spiritual journey.

God created the universe as a manifestation of His love for His creatures, in particular humanity, and Islam became the fabric woven out of this love. Love is the essence of creation. Just as a mother’s love and compassion compels her to allow a surgeon to operate on her sick child to save his or her life, jihad allows war, if needed, to preserve such fundamental human rights as the right to life and religious freedom. Jihad does not exclusively mean war.

“Disliking on the way of God” applies only to feelings, thoughts, and attributes. Thus, we should dislike such things as immorality, unbelief, and polytheism, not the people who engage in such activities. God created humanity as noble beings, and everyone, to a certain degree, has a share in this nobility. His Messenger once stood up out of respect for humanity as the funeral procession of a Jew passed by. When reminded that the deceased was a Jew, the Prophet replied: “But he is a human,” thereby showing the value Islam gives to human.

This action demonstrates how highly our Prophet respected every person. Given this, the involvement of some selfproclaimed Muslim individuals or institutions in terrorist activities can in no way be approved of by Islam. The reasons for this terrorism should be sought for in the actions themselves, in false interpretations of the faith, and in other factors and motives. Islam does not support terror, so how could a Muslim who truly understands Islam be a terrorist?

The definition of tolerance in Islam is such that the Prophet even prohibited verbal abuse of unbelievers.

For example, Abu Jahl died before embracing Islam, despite all the Prophet’s efforts. His unbelief and enmity toward the Prophet was such that he deserved the Abu Jahl: Father of ignorance and impudence. His untiring opposition to Islam was a thorn in the side of the Muslims.

Despite such hostility, when in an assembly of Companions where Abu Jahl’s son Ikrimah was present, the Prophet one day admonished a Companion who had been heard insulting Abu Jahl:

“Do not hurt others by criticizing their fathers.”[ Hakim, al-Mustadrak, 3:241; Muttaqi al-Hindi, Kanz al-‘Ummal, 13:540. ] Another time, he said: “Cursing your mother and father is a great sin.” The Companions asked: “O Messenger of God, would anyone curse their parents?”

The Prince of Prophets replied: “When someone curses another’s father and the other curses his father in return, or when someone curses another’s mother and the other does the same in return, they will have cursed their parents.”[ Muslim, Iman, 145; Tirmidhi, Birr, 4. ]

While the Prophet of Mercy was inordinately sensitive when it came to respecting others, some Muslims today justify unpleasant behavior on the basis of religion. This shows that they do not understand Islam, a religion in which there is no place for malice and hatred.

The Qur'an strongly urges forgiveness and tolerance. In one verse, it says of pious people:

They swallow their anger and forgive people. God loves those who do good. (Al-Imran 3:134)

In other words, Muslims should not retaliate when verbally abused or attacked. If possible, as Yunus says, they should act as if they had no hand or tongue with which to respond and no heart with which to resent. They must swallow their anger and close their eyes to the faults of others. The words selected in the verse are very meaningful. Kazm, translated as swallowing, literally means swallowing something like a thorn, an object that actually cannot be swallowed; thus it denotes swallowing one’s wrath, no matter how difficult. Another verse, while mentioning the characteristics of believers, says:

When they meet hollow words or unseemly behavior, they pass them by with dignity. (Al-Furqan 25:72)

When we look at the exalted life of God’s Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, we see that he always practiced the precepts presented in the Qur'an. For example, a Companion once repented of a sin and admitted:

“I am guilty of fornication. Whatever my punishment is, give it and cleanse me.” The Prince of Prophets said: “Go back and repent, for God forgives all sins.”[ Muslim, Hudud, 17, 23; Bukhari, Hudud, 28. ]

This event was repeated three times. Another time, a Companion complained to the Prophet that someone had stolen his belongings. But as the punishment was about to be carried out the Companion said:

“I have changed my mind and do not want to pursue my case. I forgive this individual.” The Prophet asked: “Why did you bring this matter to court? Why didn’t you forgive him from the outset?”[ Abu Dawud, Hudud, 14(4394); Nasai, Sarik, 4 (8, 68); Muwatta, Hudud, 28, (2, 834). ]

When such examples are studied from their original sources, it is clear that the method of those who act with enmity and hatred, who view everyone else with anger, and who blacken others as infidels is non-Islamic, for Islam is a religion of love and tolerance. A Muslim is a person of love and affection who avoids every kind of terrorist activity and who has no malice or hatred for anyone or anything.
