ZTE May Be Working on a 20GB RAM Phone, a Company Executive Teases

ZTE may have plans to come up with a 20GB RAM phone in the future. While the Chinese company has not yet provided any concrete details, one of its executives teased the development online. Companies including Asus and Lenovo have brought phones with 18GB RAM in the recent past. However, by bringing a 20GB RAM phone, ZTE could make the competition tougher for its rival South Asian smartphone vendors. The company is also amongst the key players working on bringing under-display selfie camera phones later this year.

Lu Qian Hao, one of the directors at ZTE, has teased the launch of the company’s 20GB RAM phone on Weibo. The executive also suggested that there might be phones with 1TB storage coming next year.
Although the exact launch plans are yet to be revealed, the teaser post by ZTE’s executive suggests that the company is aiming to take on the competition with the first mover’s advantage and may bring its 20GB RAM phone in the coming future. The phone may just be a prototype and not something designed for end consumers.

In addition to the new development, ZTE is said to be one of the key companies working on under-display selfie camera phones. AI Weekly: WHO outlines steps for creating inclusive AI health care systems

Where does your enterprise stand on the AI adoption curve? Take our AI survey to find out.

This week, the World Health Organization (WHO) released its first global report on AI in health, along with six guiding principles for design, development, and deployment. The fruit of two years of consultations with WHO-appointed experts, the work cautions against overestimating the benefits of AI while highlighting how it could be used to improve screening for diseases, assist with clinical care, and more.

The health care industry produces an enormous amount of data. An IDC study estimates the volume of health data created annually, which hit over 2,000 exabytes in 2020, will continue to grow at a 48% rate year over year. The trend has enabled significant advances in AI and machine learning, which rely on large datasets to make predictions ranging from hospital bed capacity to the presence of malignant tumors in MRIs. But unlike other domains to which AI has been applied, the sensitivity and scale of health care data makes collecting and leveraging it a formidable challenge.

The WHO report acknowledges this, pointing out that the opportunities brought about by AI are linked with risks. There’s the harms biases encoded in algorithms could cause patients, communities, and care providers. Systems trained primarily on data from people in high-income countries, for example, may not perform well for low- and middle-income patients. What’s more, unregulated use of AI might undermine the rights of patients in favor of the commercial interests or governments engaged in surveillance.

The datasets used to train AI systems that can predict the onset of conditions like Alzheimer’s, diabetes, diabetic retinopathy, breast cancer, and schizophrenia come from a range of sources. But in many cases, patients aren’t fully aware their information is included among them. In 2017, U.K. regulator concluded that The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, a division of the U.K.’s National Health Service based in London, provided Google’s DeepMind with data on 1.6 million patients without their consent.

Regardless of the source, this data can contain bias, perpetuating inequalities in AI algorithms trained for diagnosing diseases. A team of U.K. scientists found that almost all eye disease datasets come from patients in North America, Europe, and China, meaning eye disease-diagnosing algorithms are less certain to work well for racial groups from underrepresented countries. In another study, researchers from the University of Toronto, the Vector Institute, and MIT showed that widely used chest X-ray datasets contain racial, gender, and socioeconomic biases.

Further illustrating the point, Stanford researchers found that some AI-powered medical devices approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are vulnerable to data shifts and bias against underrepresented patients. Even as AI becomes embedded in more medical devices — the FDA approved over 65 AI devices last year — the accuracy of these algorithms isn’t necessarily being rigorously studied, because they’re not being evaluated by prospective studies.

Experts argue that prospective studies, which collect test data prior to rather than concurrent with deployment, are necessary particularly for AI medical devices because their actual use can differ from the intended use. For example, most computer-powered diagnostic systems are designed to be decision-support tools rather than primary diagnostic tools. A prospective study might reveal that clinicians are misusing a device for diagnosis, leading to outcomes that might deviate from what’s expected.

Beyond dataset challenges, models lacking peer review can encounter roadblocks when deployed in the real world. Scientists at Harvard found that algorithms trained to recognize and classify CT scans could become biased toward scan formats from certain CT machine manufacturers. Meanwhile, a Google-published whitepaper revealed challenges in implementing an eye disease-predicting system in Thailand hospitals, including issues with scan accuracy.

To limit the risks and maximize the benefits of AI for health, the WHO recommends taking steps to protect autonomy, ensure transparency and explainability, foster responsibility and accountability, and work toward inclusiveness and equity. The recommendations also include promoting well-being, safety, and the public interest, as well as AI that’s responsive and sustainable.

The WHO says redress should be available to people adversely affected by decisions based on algorithms, and also that designers should “continuously” assess AI apps to determine whether they’re aligning with expectations and requirements. In addition, the WHO recommends both governments and companies address disruptions in the workplace caused by automated systems, including training for health care workers to adapt to the use of AI.

“AI systems should … be carefully designed to reflect the diversity of socioeconomic and health care settings,” the WHO said in a press release. “They should be accompanied by training in digital skills, community engagement, and awareness-raising, especially for millions of healthcare workers who will require digital literacy or retraining if their roles and functions are automated, and who must contend with machines that could challenge the decision making and autonomy of providers and patients.”

As new examples of problematic AI in health care emerge, from widely deployed but untested algorithms to biased dermatological datasets, it’s becoming critical that stakeholders follow accountability steps like those outlined by the WHO. Not only will it foster trust in AI systems, but it could improve care for the millions of people who might be subjected to AI-powered diagnostic systems in the future.

“Machine learning really is a powerful tool, if designed correctly — if problems are correctly formalized and methods are identified to really provide new insights for understanding these diseases,” Dr. Mihaela van der Schaar, a Turing Fellow and professor of machine learning, AI, and health at the University of Cambridge and UCLA, said during a keynote at the ICLR conference in May 2020. “Of course, we are at the beginning of this revolution, and there is a long way to go. But it’s an exciting time. And it’s an important time to focus on such technologies.”

For AI coverage, send news tips to Kyle Wiggers — and be sure to subscribe to the AI Weekly newsletter and bookmark our AI channel, The Machine.

Thanks for reading,

Kyle Wiggers

AI Staff Writer

VentureBeat

VentureBeat’s mission is to be a digital town square for technical decision-makers to gain knowledge about transformative technology and transact.

Our site delivers essential information on data technologies and strategies to guide you as you lead your organizations. This Face Mask Tech Uses Biosensors to Detect COVID-19 in Your Breath Within 90 Minutes

COVID-19 has turned the world upside down. While vaccination drives in several countries have gained momentum, the threat of a third wave in some countries, including India, looms large. A team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University have developed a wearable biosensor technology that can help face masks detect COVID-19 in your breath.

The study, “Wearable materials with embedded synthetic biology sensors for biomolecule detection,” has been published in the Nature Biotechnology journal. These wearable biosensors have been installed in standard KN95 face masks to identify if the virus was present in a person’s breath. And it’s quick too. Researchers said that you can activate sensors with a button and the readout strip reflects results within 90 minutes. Not just that, the accuracy level is just the same as the standard PCR COVID tests, they added.

Peter Nguyen, a research scientist at the Wyss Institute and co-author of the study, said that the team essentially brought an entire diagnostic laboratory into a small, synthetic biology-based sensor that works with any face mask, adding, that it had the high accuracy of PCR tests with the speed and low cost of antigen tests. “In addition to face masks, our programmable biosensors can be integrated into other garments to provide on-the-go detection of dangerous substances, including viruses, bacteria, toxins, and chemical agents,” Nguyen said in a statement.

Nina Donghia, a staff scientist at the Wyss Institute and a co-author on the study, said that this advanced technology can also be used to equip lab coats of scientists working with hazardous materials or pathogens and even the uniforms of first responders and military personnel “who could be exposed to dangerous pathogens or toxins, such as nerve gas.”

The team is now looking for manufacturing partners who can produce these masks in large numbers so that they are made available during the pandemic, researchers said.

The post This Face Mask Tech Uses Biosensors to Detect COVID-19 in Your Breath Within 90 Minutes appeared first on Patabook Technology.
source https://patabook.com/blogs/100834/This-Face-Mask-Tech-Uses-Biosensors-to-Detect-COVID-19

TikTok Back in Pakistan After Court Revokes Ban Over Objectionable Content

TikTok was running again in Pakistan Saturday after a provincial court lifted suspension of the popular social media service but ordered it to address complaints that it hosted objectionable content. The Pakistan Telecoms Authority (PTA) blocked access Thursday for a third time after a ruling by a Sindh court hearing a private citizen’s petition against the Chinese-owned app.

Freedom of speech advocates have long criticised creeping government censorship and control of Pakistan’s Internet and media.

TikTok’s suspension was slammed by the video sharing platform’s huge fan base in Pakistan, many of whom use it to market and sell goods online.

But its critics in the deeply conservative Muslim nation say it promotes vulgarity and LBGQT content.

TikTok has been shut down twice before in Pakistan because of alleged “indecent” videos — most recently in March, after which the platform pledged better moderation.

It said Wednesday it had removed more than six million videos from its Pakistan service in the past three months alone — around 15 percent featuring “adult nudity and sexual activities”.

A PTA official told AFP the court had Friday revoked its earlier order banning the app, and users confirmed it was running again.

Still, even senior Pakistan officials appeared confused by the to- and fro-ing.

“I am baffled after reading… verdict on suspension of TikTok,” Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry tweeted.

The post TikTok Back in Pakistan After Court Revokes Ban Over Objectionable Content appeared first on Patabook Technology.
source https://patabook.com/blogs/100833/TikTok-Back-in-Pakistan-After-Court-Revokes-Ban-Over-Objectionable

Kaseya Supply-Chain Attack Hits Nearly 40 Service Providers With REvil Ransomware

The threat actors behind the REvil ransomware gang appear to have pushed ransomware via an update for Kaseya’s IT management software, hitting around 40 customers worldwide, in what’s an instance of a widespread supply-chain ransomware attack.

“Beginning around mid-day (EST/US) on Friday, July 2, 2021, Kaseya’s Incident Response team learned of a potential security incident involving our VSA software,” the company’s CEO Fred Voccola said in a statement shared late Friday.

Following the incident, the IT and security management services company said it took immediate steps to shut down our SaaS servers as a precautionary measure, in addition to notifying its on-premises customers to shut down their VSA servers to prevent them from being compromised.

Voccola also said the company has identified the source of the vulnerability and that it’s readying a patch to mitigate the ongoing issues. In the interim, the company also noted it intends to keep all on-premise VSA servers, SaaS, and hosted VSA servers shut down until it’s safe to resume operations.

According to Sophos Malware Analyst Mark Loman, the industry-wide supply-chain attack leverages Kaseya VSA to deploy a variant of the REvil ransomware into a victim’s environment, with the REvil binary side-loaded via a fake Windows Defender app to encrypt a victim’s files.

The attack chain also involves attempts to disable Microsoft Defender Real-Time Monitoring via PowerShell, Loman added. Zerafa withdraws from Tszyu fight, Spark steps in

However, fight promoters believe Zerafa never intended to take on Tszyu.

Australian users can personalise their ESPN experience by downloading the app. Get live scores, news and videos for the teams and sports you love ANYWHERE, ANYTIME.

• Download ESPN from Google Play Store
• Download ESPN from iTunes App Store
• AFL | NRL | NBL | Rugby | Football | Cricket
• Top 10: Best Australian sports moments

DOWNLOAD

“We knew from the moment he looked Tim in the eyes at the press conference and went quiet that he never wanted this fight,” said CEO of No Limit Boxing George Rose. “I knew it. If I can go out there and dethrone the biggest name in Australian boxing then I’m right where I want to be.”

Despite the limited preparation for Spark, Tszyu knows he has a difficult assignment.

“He’s a dangerous fighter with a lot of power,” Tszyu said. “I’ve seen it for myself. I was ringside at the fight in Wollongong when he hammered Jack Brubaker, and saw how well he did under the bright lights.

“He has power, stamina and keeps the pressure on. Lightning zap Canadiens, move one win away from repeat: Everything we learned in Game 3

11:43 PM ET

The Tampa Bay Lightning moved within one victory of back-to-back Stanley Cup championships, with an emphatic 6-3 win at the Montreal Canadiens in Game 3 on Friday night.

Miss any of the game? We’re here with the top takeaways.

More: Cup Final schedule | Playoff Central

Stanley Cup Final Game 3 in 10 words or fewer

Lightning strike first and then just keep striking.

What a performance for the gritty center. Johnson pulled double duty for the second straight game, skating with Steven Stamkos and Anthony Cirelli on the second line in place of the injured Alex Killorn, while moonlighting in his usual spot on the fourth line. He scored two critical goals in the game, including the knockout blow in the third period on a great individual effort.

It’s amazing to think that he was placed on waivers twice by the Lightning this season, in the hopes that someone would claim his contract, because they were so capped-strapped. No one did. Bet they’re pretty happy about that now.

2 Related

What worked for Tampa Bay?

The Lightning are doing to the Canadiens what the Canadiens did to their previous three opponents: Forcing them into mistakes, making them pay for them and then relying on an All-World goalie to clean up their own errors. It’s just that when the Lightning execute this game plan, their unmatched depth of talent just makes it look so overwhelming.

What didn’t work for Montreal?

Once again, the first goal mattered most: Tampa Bay is now 15-2 in the playoffs when doing so, while Montreal dropped to 1-6 when they don’t. But increasingly, the story of the series is Andrei Vasilevskiy bailing out the Lightning when they get in trouble, while Carey Price has not done so for the Canadiens. Price has an .835 save percentage in the series and has allowed 13 goals in three games. “I can definitely play better. It’s just not good enough so far,” said Price.

The goals

Tampa Bay 1-0: Jan Rutta (Ondrej Palat, Victor Hedman) | 1:52, first period

Target acquired 🎯

No doubt about it, Jan Rutta’s got the Shot of the Night! #StanleyCup

NHL x @JagermeisterUSA pic.twitter.com/QTLZbIwwfg

— NHL (@NHL) July 3, 2021

An auspicious start for the Canadiens. An icing call allowed Lightning coach Jon Cooper to get the matchup he wanted: His top line against that of Jesperi Kotkaniemi. The key to the goal was Hedman keeping the puck in the zone when Montreal had an easy clear. The Lightning cycled, Hedman made a nifty backhand pass to Palat who sent the puck across the blue line to Rutta. He sailed a shot past Price’s right shoulder for his second goal of the playoffs, and the Lightning were off to the races.

Tampa Bay 2-0 (power play): Victor Hedman (Nikita Kucherov, Anthony Cirelli) | 3:27, first period

Victor Hedman and the @TBLightning grab an early two-goal Game 3 lead! #StanleyCup

🇺🇸: https://t.co/LcI8Hsqs1r @NHLonNBCSports
🇨🇦: https://t.co/0cXuacT6MQ @Sportsnet pic.twitter.com/uPh0cjRg6G

— NHL (@NHL) July 3, 2021

Soon after the first goal, Eric Staal made a critical error. His delay-of-game penalty for sending the puck over the glass gave Tampa Bay the chance to double their lead on the power play, and they seized the moment thanks to some stunningly passive penalty killing from the Canadiens. Hedman had about a week and a half to tee up his shot from the point, and Cirelli was allowed to screen Price unabated. This was the best penalty-kill unit in the playoffs by a significant margin, and it looked pedestrian here.

Montreal 1-2: Phillip Danault (Shea Weber) | 11:16, first period

UNE POINTE POUR TOUT LE MONDE! 🍕

EVERYBODY GRAB A SLICE!#GoHabsGo pic.twitter.com/WUfYU2HrfS

— Canadiens Montréal (@CanadiensMTL) July 3, 2021

The Canadiens get a friendly bounce on a kick save by Price and then gota a partial odd-man rush the other way. This goal was a product of two factors: Brendan Gallagher absolutely motoring past David Savard to give Danault a passing option that Vasilevskiy had to worry about; and then just a ripper of a shot from Danault to cut the Tampa Bay lead in half with his first goal of the playoffs. That’s the kind of play you remember during free agency, as Danault is an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Tampa Bay 3-1: Nikita Kucherov (Ondrej Palat, Erik Cernak) | 1:40, second period

Ondrej Palat ➡️ Nikita Kucherov

Make that another multi-point night for No. 86. #StanleyCup

🇺🇸: https://t.co/LcI8Hsqs1r @NHLonNBCSports
🇨🇦: https://t.co/0cXuacT6MQ @Sportsnet pic.twitter.com/ifdxz1WNft

— NHL (@NHL) July 3, 2021

The Canadiens had such a terrible line change that they actually had seven skaters on the ice when Cernak hit Palat with a perfect outlet pass for a 2-on-0 breakaway on Price. The end result was just nasty: Palat chased the puck down and sent a perfectly timed pass to Kucherov’s back hand, and he wasn’t going to miss from the doorstep.

Tampa Bay 4-1: Tyler Johnson (Mathieu Joseph, David Savard) | 3:33, second period

Make that four goals for the @TBLightning!!!! #StanleyCup

🇺🇸: https://t.co/LcI8Hsqs1r @NHLonNBCSports
🇨🇦: https://t.co/0cXuacT6MQ @Sportsnet pic.twitter.com/U3S4m79eHQ

— NHL (@NHL) July 3, 2021

Cooper made a tweak to his fourth line here, as Tyler Johnson — who skated with the second line due to Alex Killorn’s injury — took a shift here with his usual line. That’s not too odd, since he skated with both lines last game, but this was a noteworthy trio because Johnson would typically skate in place of Mathieu Joseph on the line with Pat Maroon and Ross Colton. Instead, he skated with Joseph and boy did they skate well. Savard made a brilliant pass to break Joseph out on a 2-on-1. He took a shot that Price saved, and then he made a pass with his back foot worthy of Euro 2020, kicking the puck to Johnson for the layup. ‘She definitely could have a run here’: Alexandra Stevenson on Coco Gauff and the Wimbledon spotlight

6:30 PM ET

D’Arcy MaineESPN.com

Few people could understand what Coco Gauff was experiencing when she made a surprise run to the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2019 as a 15-year-old qualifier.

But Alexandra Stevenson could. She can relate to what it’s like to be a teenager thrust into the spotlight on the sport’s grandest stage and all that comes with it.

“After I did well at Wimbledon, I struggled to adjust,” Stevenson said. “But Coco’s had a great 2021 and she’s come in stronger than ever.”

Stevenson was 18 — just weeks removed from graduating high school — when she captivated the world with her gutsy play and unbelievable story en route to the semifinals at the All England Club in 1999.

2 Related

Stevenson, who admittedly doesn’t see that many parallels between her story and Gauff’s, didn’t feel different after her Cinderella run. But everything around her had changed — the hype, the expectations, the stares from strangers and those in the locker room.

Gauff’s life changed too. She became a household name overnight and was almost instantaneously considered the sport’s next big thing.

Both are back at Wimbledon this year — Gauff appears to be finding magic for the second time in her young career at the tournament, and Stevenson is a commentator for ESPN.

Gauff next plays Kaja Juvan in the third round on Saturday. A possible fourth-round clash with Serena Williams had been circled by many as soon as the draw was revealed, but Williams had to retire from her opening match due to injury. Now Angelique Kerber is the only seeded player she could face in the Round of 16 if she were to advance.

With so many top-seeded players having already fallen — there are no top-10 seeds left in her quarter of the draw — and with the unpredictable nature of the women’s game, the potential is certainly there for Gauff to have her best showing yet. Hearing her answer a question about Jaden Smith or watching any number of her viral TikTok videos shows Gauff is very much a teenager, though that’s not quite as evident on the court.

“She doesn’t play like a 17-year-old,” Stevenson said. “She of course naturally has the talent but the way she’s been developed, both mentally and physically, as a player is extraordinary and beyond her years. She definitely could have a run here.”

She would know.

<picture></picture>
“I wish I had the support around me that she has,” Alexandra Stevenson said of Coco Gauff’s media training and beyond. AP Photo/Alberto Pezzali

Gauff may have been largely under the radar to casual tennis fans at Wimbledon in 2019, but those in the know had already pegged her as a superstar-in-the-making. She had been training at Patrick Mouratoglou’s academy since she was 11 and became the youngest girls’ finalist in US Open history as a 13-year-old. She then won the French Open junior title at 14. She signed with Roger Federer’s agency soon after and inked lucrative deals with New Balance, Head and Barilla.

Stevenson had a relatively normal childhood. She played in some junior events but went to a traditional high school, and even skipped the 1999 French Open in order to attend prom and perform in “Grease.” She was so, well, green, when she arrived in Birmingham, England for a lead-in event prior to Wimbledon; she didn’t realize there were special sneakers for the grass surface and had to borrow her coach’s.

How many tennis players will win an ESPY? She had been the No. 1 seed in qualifying, but Kardon and her mom Samantha didn’t tell her until after it was over. They didn’t want her to feel any pressure.

But when she went out to dinner at a Chinese restaurant in Wimbledon Village after securing her spot in the main draw, and Steffi Graf — who happened to be sitting at the next table over — congratulated her, she understood how special the opportunity was. Kardon took her around the grounds the next day, and they stopped at every court — even taking a small piece of grass from Centre Court — and he shared the history and his memories.

“I felt as if I belonged there as soon as I walked through the gates,” Stevenson said. “I had been watching [Wimbledon] since I was 5 and it just felt as if it was somewhere I was meant to be. I didn’t feel that anywhere else, just at Wimbledon.”

Stevenson had made a deal with her mom that she could turn professional and forgo her college eligibility if she were to make it to the semifinals.

While many expected Gauff to one day be going deep into Grand Slams, few thought it would happen in her very first major as a 15-year-old, but she received a wild card into qualifying and advanced into the main draw.

She defeated Venus Williams, one of her childhood heroes, in the opening round in front of a packed crowd on Court 1. Stevenson was impressed, but not surprised, by how polished Gauff was despite her young age.

“She has the best people around her in every aspect,” Stevenson said. “That includes trainers, physios and even getting things like media training. All of that wasn’t as prevalent when I started but it makes a difference. I can’t go back in time but I wish I had the support around me that she has.”

Dubbed “CocoMania,” Gauff became the toast of the tournament. Her matches became must-see events, and fans and reporters relished in her candor in interviews. She lost the opening set against Polona Hercog in the third round and faced match point at 5-2 in the second before rallying for an improbable comeback on Centre Court.

The tweets poured in from a notable array of A-listers, including Michelle Obama and Tina Knowles-Lawson. Her parents did their best to shield her, but her dad said at the time she was “acutely aware of the attention she’s getting.” Gauff said she screamed when she saw Beyonce’s mom recognize her.

<picture></picture>
“When I said I believed I could win, I got bashed by the media for it,” Stevenson said, “but I’m happy that now you can say it. By the start of the US Open, less than two months later, she was wearing a custom outfit by New Balance and had a “Call me Coco” ad campaign with the brand. She made the third round in New York, a feat Stevenson said was particularly remarkable considering how much pressure was suddenly on her, and won her first WTA singles title in October 2019.

Two years after her Wimbledon debut, and back at the tournament for the first time due to the cancellation of the 2020 event, the No. 23-ranked Gauff looks poised for the next breakthrough in her burgeoning career and is even more adjusted to the spotlight. She made the quarterfinals at the French Open last month, and has recorded two convincing straight-set wins thus far at the All England Club, including one over Elena Vesnina on Centre Court on Thursday.

Stevenson didn’t play in a match on Centre Court until the semifinals, instead being relegated to the outer courts for most of her run before being put on the old Court No. 2, better known as the “Graveyard,” for the quarterfinals. She pointed out that women rarely were given the chance to play in the main stadium until late in the tournament at that time. That’s just one of the many differences Stevenson sees between her experience and Gauff’s, but she can relate to Gauff’s attitude and self-belief.

Make your picks and compete for a chance to win $1,000! Make Your Picks

“[It’s] not every day you step on the court you’re going to play your best tennis so I don’t try to expect anything,” Gauff said after her win on Thursday. “What I do say, I would say I have more of a belief. I don’t really like the word ‘expectations’, I don’t like that word, I think I use more the other word ‘belief.’ I believe I can win.

“I think I believed that back in 2019, and I believe that now. I don’t think anything has changed. My goal is to always win the tournament regardless of my ranking or what people think of me. What I will say is that goal I guess is more clear right now than it was in 2019. I think just my belief is a lot stronger now, the feeling that I can go far.”

Stevenson added, “When I said I believed I could win, I got bashed by the media for it, but I’m happy that now you can say it. Show-tani: Angels star hits 2 HRs, ups total to 30

9:14 PM ET

Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Fans hoping Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani will pitch and hit in the All-Star Game might get their wish.

Angels manager Joe Maddon wants Ohtani to do both in the July 13 midsummer classic in Denver and has discussed it with Tampa Bay Rays skipper Kevin Cash, who will manage the American League squad.

2 Related

Maddon said seeing Ohtani do both as well as participating in the Home Run Derby on July 12 at Coors Field would draw in even non-baseball fans. That is why he is advocating showcasing Ohtani as much as possible.

“The maximum participation of Shohei within limits to me is the right thing to do,” Maddon said before Friday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles. “What else could you possibly want? We have to do it in a manner that is not going to be destructive in some way.

“In order to have him both pitch and hit, you have to relax a bit, the DH rule. I think they’re prepared to do those kinds of things.”

Ohtani was elected to his first All-Star Game by fans Thursday night as the AL’s starting designated hitter. He remained coy through his translator on what the plans would be for him during the game.

“I think as players we’re all like just pieces of the puzzle, and it’s all up to the manager, how he’s going to decide to use me. That’s all I can say for now,” Ohtani said. “It is a pretty big milestone. I want the team to win first. As long as I’m performing and helping the team win, I felt like it should come natural for me to be selected as an All-Star.”

The Japanese two-way sensation went deep twice Friday night and leads the majors with 30 home runs and 51 extra-base hits. On the mound, the right-hander is 3-1 in 12 starts with a 3.60 ERA and 83 strikeouts. His .194 opponents’ batting average would rank third in the AL if he had enough innings to qualify.

Ohtani was chosen as AL player of the month for June on Friday, marking the first time he received the monthly honor. He batted .309 with 13 home runs and 23 RBIs, along with going 2-0 with 33 strikeouts in five pitching starts. He finished the month by homering in 11 of the past 14 games.

His two long balls Friday not only gave him the Angels’ record for most home runs before the All-Star break, but it broke Babe Ruth’s mark for most in a season with 10 or more games pitched. Ruth had 29 homers in 1919 for the Boston Red Sox.

“It’s just such an easy swing, but it’s violent,” said teammate Mike Trout, who was also voted an All-Star Game starter despite being injured. “You’ve seen him the last few weeks, he’s unconscious at the plate. Anything he hits, it is over the fence.”

Trout said he talked to Ohtani last week and told him to enjoy the All-Star experience.

“Just the whole atmosphere and being there with all the guys, it’s one of the coolest things you’re going to do. And it goes by so fast, especially for him with the derby and all the directions he is going to be pulled in,” Trout said. “He’s going to try and put on a show, that’s why he’s Show-tani.”

Maddon talked to Cash last weekend when Los Angeles was at Tampa Bay for a three-game series. Maddon said discussions with Cash will continue, with Angels general manager Perry Minasian also having a role. Talks between the All-Star manager and teams are common, especially when it comes to the pitching staff and whether anyone is throwing the weekend before the game.

Ohtani also made his case to Cash with a 453-foot home run off the D-ring in right field at Tropicana Field in the first game of the series on June 25. That was only the 39th ball to reach that spot since the park opened in 1998.

Before the All-Star Game, Ohtani has more pressing matters — such as trying to bounce back from a tough outing in his last pitching start. He was charged with a career-high seven runs in two-thirds of an inning Wednesday against the New York Yankees, his worst start of the year.

Ohtani said there hasn’t been a decision on when he would make his next start. If he remains on schedule, it could be Tuesday or Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox.

The post Show-tani: Angels star hits 2 HRs, ups total to 30 appeared first on Patabook Sports.
source https://patabook.com/blogs/100828/Show-tani-Angels-star-hits-2-HRs-ups-total-to

Spain ride luck, Switzerland’s runs out in another epic

4:09 PM ET

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — It was the game that had everything, followed by a penalty shoot-out that lurched one way and then another. By the end of an energy-sapping and psychologically draining 120 minutes, Spain rode their luck — and Switzerland saw theirs run out — to claim a place in the Euro 2020 semifinals after a 3-1 win on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

They played “London Calling” by The Clash over the stadium PA system just seconds before the penalties began, if only to add more pressure on the takers by reminding them precisely what was at stake: a semifinal against Belgium or Italy at Wembley on July 6. While the nerves affected both sets of players, the prize of a semifinal (and maybe yet a place in the final) ended up with Spain thanks to two shoot-out saves by goalkeeper Unai Simon and a wayward attempt by Swiss substitute Ruben Vargas, who sent his shot over the crossbar.

Mikel Oyarzabal may have struck the decisive penalty, but Simon was the difference-maker.

Euro 2020: News and features | Fixtures and bracket | Standings | Squads | Live on ESPN | VAR watch | Pick ’em

Friday’s defeat was tough on Switzerland — especially so for keeper Yann Sommer, who produced a series of crucial saves late in the game to take it to penalties. The Borussia Monchengladbach No.1, whose save from Kylian Mbappe sealed Monday’s Round of 16 shootout win against France, looked set to be the match-winner again when he kept out Rodri‘s spot-kick during their penalty drama. But having played with 10 men since the 77th minute after midfielder Remo Freuler was dismissed for a challenge on Gerard Moreno — replays showed it to be a harsh decision by English referee Michael Oliver, but it was not challenged by VAR — Switzerland just could not repeat their heroics against the French in Budapest by eliminating Luis Enrique’s team.

“I’m really proud of the team,” Swiss midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri said. “Penalties are a bit 50-50, and I was nervous watching the shoot-out. I think we just lacked a little bit of luck today.”

2 Related

Meanwhile Spain keeper Simon, beaten by Shaqiri for Switzerland’s second-half equaliser, insisted his team deserved to go through, saying “We are deserved winners.”

In terms of possession and chances created, Simon is probably correct, but credit should be given to Switzerland for their refusal to crumble after Freuler’s red card. For the second time in just four days, both teams were forced to endure extra-time as the knock-out stages of the competition continued to test every element of their physical capabilities. But Switzerland’s challenge was much greater than Spain’s.

<picture></picture>
Spain rode their luck to outlast Switzerland in the quarterfinals after 120 minutes that had every kind of fun and drama. Yet it’s hard to see them going further unless they pick up their form in front of goal. Getty

More may be made of this once the tournament is over, but no team has suffered from the logistical nightmare of staging the competition in 11 different European cities across the length and breadth of the continent more than Switzerland. While Spain played three group games at home in Seville and based themselves in Madrid, before teeing up this quarterfinal in Russia with a win against Croatia in Copenhagen, Denmark, Vladimir Petkovic’s Swiss squad have clocked more than 7,000 miles in less than three weeks thanks to a schedule that has taken them from Baku to Rome, back to Baku, on to Bucharest and then, finally, to Saint Petersburg.

That they were able to take Spain to penalties, with a one-man disadvantage and so many more miles on their clock, is a testament to the collective unity of Petkovic’s squad. They are no team of stars, but you will have to look long and hard to find another side with the work ethic and commitment displayed by Switzerland during Euro 2020.

Switzerland have fighting spirit too. They fought back from 3-1 down against France and had to overturn Spain’s 8th minute opener in Saint Petersburg after Jordi Alba‘s 20-yard shot was deflected past Sommer by Denis Zakaria.

– Ogden: The psychology of taking a penalty

Having scored so early, Spain should have capitalised on Switzerland’s fatigue and added to their tally, but this Spanish side is a contradiction. They score goals, but they can’t score goals. Spain had hit 10 in their last two games, against Croatia and Slovakia, but without a striker of genuine quality, their goals always seem to come out of the blue, or via a mistake or unexpected piece of brilliance. Alvaro Morata continues to look weighed down by the burden of playing as the centre-forward; he only lasted 55 minutes on Friday before being replaced by Moreno, who proceeded to engage in a losing battle with Sommer that saw the keeper save everything he sent his way.

<picture class="media-wrapper_image"></picture>play

0:38

Kelly Cates, Tim Howard & Alessandro Del Piero react to Spain’s shootout win over Switzerland.

As for the rest, Spain pass it around nicely and have great quality in Pedri and Ferran Torres, but as a team, they just look pedestrian and unimaginative. It is a group of players that lacks an identity or clear roadmap to wherever it is heading. Yet Spain coach Luis Enrique struck a defiant tone after the game, insisting his team has the qualities to win the competition.

“If there is a team prepared to overcome adversities, it is ours,” he said. “We are one of the four favourites to win Euro 2020 on our own merits.”

Spain have managed to make it to the semifinals by stumbling through a weak section of the draw, and they couldn’t finish off the Swiss before the shoot-out despite having a one-man advantage for the final 43 minutes. Their lack of zip and physical presence will surely see them reach the end of the line against either Belgium or Italy in the semis. Whenever Luis Enrique’s players face a genuine heavyweight opponent, they seem to lose. But while this Spain team is a shadow of its recent predecessors, they have at least brought an end to Spanish failures at major tournaments.

Since winning Euro 2012, Spain have suffered a group stage elimination at Brazil 2014 and failed to go beyond the Round of 16 at Euro 2016 or Russia 2018. They have made the semifinals at Euro 2020, through sheer force of will, but it’s difficult to believe they will go any further.

The post Spain ride luck, Switzerland’s runs out in another epic appeared first on Patabook Sports.
source https://patabook.com/blogs/100827/Spain-ride-luck-Switzerland-s-runs-out-in-another-epic

Herbert extends Irish Open lead with birdie blitz

Elizabeth Hurley's son cut from father's family trust

Before Stephen Bing took his own life last year, he won a court battle overturning his father’s attempt to exclude his children, Damian Hurley, 19, and Kira Bonder, 23, from a family trust but that decision has now been overturned on appeal.

Damian's mother Elizabeth Hurley told the Daily Mail newspaper: "When Stephen took his own life, he died thinking his children were going to be taken care of.

"What Stephen wanted has now been callously reversed. I know Stephen would have been devastated."

Kira’s mother, Lisa Bonder, added: "As a mum, I wonder why on earth this had to happen. Why make two innocent kids into victims?"

Although Stephen initially had no relationship with Lisa or Damian, he had started to make amends before his death.

He reached out to Kira in 2015, with Lisa saying: "Kira was interested. I think she saw it as an opportunity to make amends, to heal the past and possibly get to know her grandparents and her cousins from Steve’s sister Mary."

And Stephen also tried to develop a relationship with Damian, calling him for the first time on his 18th birthday last year.

He also supported Elizabeth and Lisa when Steve’s father, Dr Peter Bing, tried to cut Damian and Kira out of the ‘grandchildren trusts’ he had set up nearly 40 years earlier, on the basis they were both born out of wedlock.

Elizabeth said: "Damian’s grandfather, Peter Bing, had attempted to have Stephen’s children, including Damian, disregarded as his grandchildren in the irrevocable trust he had previously set up.

"Stephen fought very hard in his last year to have his children recognised and repeatedly told me how incredibly important this was to him.

"He was happy beyond belief that the trial verdict ruled that Damian was to be treated like his sister’s children as far as the trust was concerned."

Lisa added: "It’s been horrible — forget about the actual legality of it all: this is their grandfather saying: “You don’t count, and I don’t want you to be a part of our lives because your mum was not married to my son.

"Damian and Kira have been disinherited from the Bing family trust. There’s no recourse, they can’t go back. They lost. It’s been very painful for them and left a family void for Damian and Kira to deal with."

Patabook News
source https://patabook.com/blogs/100823/Elizabeth-Hurley-s-son-cut-from-father-s-family-trust

Zendaya and Tom Holland Were Filmed Kissing in a Car Years After Denying Dating Reports

Zendaya and Tom Holland were photographed kissing inside a car on Thursday, per photos obtained by Page Six. Page Six also captured the kiss by video.

Page Six reports they were sitting in Holland’s $125,000 Audi sports car while at a red light. The photos also show the two smiling and laughing together. The two were spotted in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, where the site reports Zendaya’s mom, Claire Stoermer, lives. Stoermer is also pictured with her daughter and Holland.

They were also seen carrying items out to the car, Page Six reports. Zendaya, 24 was wearing a white cropped tank and green pants. Holland, 25, wore a flannel shirt over a white T-shirt and black shorts with white sneakers and socks.

The two have long denied they are a couple, though sources have said otherwise.

“They started seeing each other while they were filming Spider-Man,” a source told People in 2017. “They’ve been super careful to keep it private and out of the public eye, but they’ve gone on vacations with each other and try and spend as much time as possible with one another.”

Another source added: “They’re both really ambitious and they challenge each other—but, most importantly, they make each other crack up. They seem to have a really similar sense of humor and love joking around together. They have great banter back and forth.”

A month after that report, Zendaya seemed to deny the rumors when she tweeted: “Wait wait…my favorite is when it says we go on vacations together HA! I haven’t been on a vacation in years!hbu. @TomHolland1996 ???”

This content is imported from Twitter. I’m Terrified of Heights, but I Decided to Live Life on the “Edge” at Hudson Yards

As someone with a lifelong fear of heights, I pulled myself together to take a yoga class with Equinox at 6:30am, 101 stories above New York City at the Edge in Hudson Yards, the highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere. For some reason, upon hearing about this class, I thought it would be off the fifth floor of the building, but I quickly realized that we’d be 1,100 feet in the air.

The weekly 45-minute yoga class, taught by an Equinox instructor, includes admission to the Edge, 15-minutes of post-class pictures, a tote bag with “curated wellness products” and a pre-placed Equinox-branded yoga mat to be used for class. Equinox gifted me a ticket to take this class, but classes are typically $50 (Hudson Yards EQX+ members can RSVP for this class as a part of their membership at no additional charge). Tickets tend to go quick so if you want to practice on the Edge be sure to reserve your spot. Keep reading to hear about my experience from entering the building to the relieving step off the elevator post-class, and find out which of my fight or flight instincts kicked in during this Sky-High yoga class.

Getting Myself on the Edge

Before I get too far into this I want to mention that I have seen a psychiatrist for my fear of heights and have been prescribed an as-needed anxiety medication that makes me incredibly drowsy. I chose to not take my medication early that morning because I thought it’d make me too drowsy to pay attention during class. (We’ll get back to how that turned out for me towards the end of this class experience.)

Entering the elevator was the beginning of the Edge experience. As we went up I was surprised with the audiovisual experience that was the seven-foot tall animation covering three sides of the elevator. The animation detailed the journey of the creation of the Edge as we went up to the virtual 101 floor. Seeing the numbers go up exponentially I placed my hand on the side of the elevator and immediately tapped into my deep belly breathing so I wouldn’t pass out.

Arriving at the 101st floor, I stepped out into the indoor lobby, looked out of one of the windows and saw that we were higher than the tip of the empire state building — yes, that high. Rounding the corner of the lobby I stepped through the revolving doors, out to the top of the stairs to take in the breathtaking views before walking down the stairs onto the Edge. With each step down towards the yoga mat I could feel every breeze more than I’ve ever felt a gust of wind and the sun felt warm like a spotlight hitting the stage.

Class Experience

For the beginning of class the instructor cued us to lay on our backs. Laying on my back 101 stories in the air, I felt the most anxiety I had all morning. I couldn’t stop myself from visualizing the emptiness beneath the edge. It made me so paranoid that I rolled onto my side to check the spaces between the slabs of concrete to make sure I couldn’t see the ground below. Luckily the instructor wasn’t the type of person to call out people for making personal choices to customize the practice for their own needs. Once we got onto hands and knees I felt much safer and my heart rate calmed down from what I could see on my Apple Watch.

Quite fitting for the experience, the 45-minute practice mainly consisted of sun salutes A and B. As we saluted the sun I felt so much more sensitive to the elements. I could feel the sun rising from over my left shoulder and the breeze pass over my bare shins. If those subtle sensations weren’t enough to validate the uniqueness of this experience warrior two definitely did. Opening into a warrior two facing the left side of the edge in the not so far distant I saw a helicopter fly by at eye-level. Right away I kept repeating the mantra “I am safe” to myself as I peaked over my right shoulder seeing the entry to the building’s lower lobby knowing that if need be I could run inside.

Keeping my attention on the mat I turned my attention away from fear and towards the music that was playing in the background. Throughout the class a soundtrack of wordless music played that gave me the feeling of being in a futuristic spa in outer space. A choice I assume was made to help the students relax .

Throughout the rest of the class it felt like a brain game of keeping myself calm while seeing the view at different angles. For example, at one point we were in a wide fold and I could see an airplane fly by upside down. Towards the end of practice we did a camel pose, which is already quite a heart-opening pose, but nerves wouldn’t let me lean back too far into the pose and I felt most comfortable up-right or folded in. As class closed we were asked to lay on our backs like we did at the start of practice but once again all of the calm I gathered while practicing went over the Edge as my anxiety crept back in. Instead I closed class in a fetal position facing the lower lobby as that made me feel the most safe.

At the official end of class I snapped some pictures with a friend and of the scenery once more and made my way to the elevator.

Post Class Thoughts

Overall, the actual yoga sequence itself felt very approachable for a wide range of students. While I’m not sure if the sequence is the same each week, our practice that day played into the fact that we had a unique view of the city and that we could take in the view from every angle available during the flow.

Looking back on the entire experience, I’m proud of myself for facing my fear of heights to take on this (possibly) once in a lifetime experience but my personal piece of advice to myself is that I should’ve taken my prescribed anxiety medication.

Now that you’ve taken in the written form of this experience, grab your tickets to try this one-of-a-kind Sky-High Equinox Yoga class at the Edge this summer.

Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Angelica Wilson

The post I’m Terrified of Heights, but I Decided to Live Life on the “Edge” at Hudson Yards appeared first on Patabook Fashion.
source https://patabook.com/blogs/100821/I-m-Terrified-of-Heights-but-I-Decided-to-Live

Covid Cases, Rates Jump In Los Angeles Ahead Of 4th Of July Gatherings; Top Health Official Warns, “Another Wave Could Become A Very Real Possibility”

On July 2 of 2020, when the initial spring surge of Covid-19 was fading, local elected officials across Southern California ordered virtually every beach shut down from Santa Barbara to the Mexican border. Cities around California cancelled fireworks displays. Governor Gavin Newsom closed bars and mandated masks in public spaces. What officials couldn’t stop, however, were household gatherings and travel over the Fourth of July weekend.

The result was a more than 150% increase in new daily cases from 570 on July 1, 2020 to 1,476 on August 2, 2020. Health officials linked the rise to gatherings held across the long weekend.

One year later, the beaches and bars are open for the Fourth. Fireworks displays are a go. Masks are no longer mandated in public. And health officials are worried.

“Another wave could become a very real possibility,” said Los Angeles Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer on Thursday. “It’s still unclear to us whether the people vaccinated with the vaccines in the United States can transmit the Delta variant. Until more is known, individuals should add a layer of protection.” That layer of protection Ferrer referenced is a mask.

Last Monday, Ferrer’s department made national headlines when it backtracked on its own Covid guidelines, “strongly” recommending masking in all indoor public places, due to the rapid spread of the Delta variant. The World Health Organization did likewise.

Another 549 new Covid-19 infections were reported in Los Angeles County on Friday. That’s the largest number since mid-April of this year and the second straight day the figure has topped 500. It prompted more calls for residents to get vaccinated and exercise caution over the Fourth of July weekend.

That 549 is more than double the average daily number the county was reporting in mid-June of this year, when the state and county virus restrictions were lifted. Even more striking, it’s nearly identical to the 570 new daily cases reported on July 2, 2020. There are some differences, however.

Chief among those are the vaccines. Nearly 60% percent of eligible L.A. County residents were fully inoculated as of July 1. That’s far better than the 47% of the national population that is fully inoculated. But 4 million of the county’s 10 million residents are still not vaccinated, many of them children. That’s because vaccines are only approved for Americans over 12 years old.

While children have been less susceptible to Covid infections thusfar, the Delta variant is thought to be 60% more transmissible. It’s also thought to cause more severe symptoms.

In late June, Israel reinstated indoor mask requirements due to the variant’s spread. According to the Wall Street Journal, “About half of adults infected in an outbreak of the Delta variant of Covid-19 in Israel were fully inoculated with the Pfizer Inc. vaccine.” Israel is one of the most highly-vaccinated countries in the world, with about 80% of citizens over 16 fully inoculated.

The country’s number of new daily cases produced by the outbreak was only 200, but that was up from 10 daily cases seen through most of June. Delta seemed to be plowing through the immunity provided by the vaccine and afflicting those with stronger immune systems, as well. According the the WSJ, “Children under 16, most of whom haven’t been vaccinated, accounted for about half of those infected.”

A similar scenario has played out in the U.K. A recent study by the Imperial College London found that, as infections surged in early June, the increase was driven by mostly unvaccinated young people; Those who had been assumed to be less susceptible. The study found 5-fold higher rate of test positivity among children 5 to 12 years and adults 18 to 24 than in those 65 or older.

It’s not just cases that have been inching up in L.A. The 7-day average rate of people testing positive for the virus remains very low at just 1.3%. In early July of 2020 it was 10%. But the trend in 2021 is not good.

Test positivity has been moving upward over the past month. Test positivity has more than quadrupled from a low of 0.3% seen the first week of June. It’s up over 50% in the past week alone. That trend is occurring even as daily testing numbers — until this week — were plummeting. That could indicate an even larger rise in infections hidden by the smaller number of tests.

Hospitalizations due to Covid-19 have been on the rise, as well, even though they dipped slightly on Friday, with state figures showing 275 virus patients in the county, down from 280 on Thursday. That was up from 275 on Wednesday and 255 on Tuesday. There were 72 patients in intensive care due to Covid, down from 74 on Thursday. Los Angeles County reported five more Covid deaths on Friday, raising the countywide death toll from the virus to 24,492.

“Whenever we see a doubling of cases and a quadrupling of test positivity over a short period of time, we are reminded of how easily the virus can spread,” said Ferrer.

The Delta variant is believed to be responsible for more than 26% of current infections in the United States. Ferrer said Thursday 245 cases of the Delta variant have been confirmed in the county, nearly double the number from last week. Given the expense, the county conducts only a limited number of the sequencing tests needed to identify the variants. Even with the small numbers, Delta has become the most dominant variant detected in the county.

Given its increasing prevalence among identified variants in the county, Ferrer said, it’s clear there is “increasing circulation” of Delta in the county.

She again stressed that existing vaccines provide strong protection against the variant, but breakthrough infections of people who are fully vaccinated do happen. And those people — while at low risk of becoming seriously ill — could potentially spread the infection to others, especially the county’s millions of unvaccinated kids.

Statewide, cases averaged over 1,000 last week for the first time since May. On Friday, the daily number of new infections rose to 1,792, a count California has not seen in months. Test positivity also rose from a low of .7% in early June to 1.5% on Friday.
