That reply completely glossed over op's point that if you're GNC and you want to go to a business meant to aid you in your presentation (an explicitly GNC presentation!) you're more than correct in feeling unsafe. The kind of nb people they're referring to are explicitly non-GNC in their presentation. Every time I go to the barber I feel anxious and worried at what their reaction to me, extremely non-passing trans man, will be. The same goes for a non-passing trans woman (augmented, even)

The most the average nb person who isn't going out of their way to present differently from their agab (which is VALID, btw. Like the op said they don't *owe* anyone androgyny) would have to deal with is misgendering, but for the most part I don't think a nail salon is going to ask for your pronouns when you come in and refuse service if you give the "wrong" ones

yeah i think people were getting very fixated on that example and not really understanding what the point of it was. part of it i think is because the op didn't explain it very well, but also this is tumblr dot com where we piss on the poor daily. the point wasn’t “asking for a trans friendly business if you’re not visibly trans is stupid and bad”, it’s “are you afraid someone isn't going to understand that you're nonbinary and will assume you're cis unless you say something? or are you afraid someone will refuse you service or treat you poorly?"

when i was pre t and looking for places to get my haircut, when i kept it longer and more "feminine", i didn't have a problem finding places to go. i just showed up, said i wanted a trim, and that was it. when i decided i wanted to cut it shorter and get a "men's cut", i had a lot of trouble finding someone who would even do it. over and over i would get hairdressers (all women) who would give me pixie cuts instead of men's cuts. i once spent two hours at the salon repeatedly telling the hairdresser "go shorter" because she literally would not just buzz it and insisted we go little by little in case we went "too short." but they still provided me service. it wasn't until i found my current hairdresser, who is a gay man, that i started getting the cuts i actually wanted. and now that t is making my voice drop and most importantly in this context changing my hairline in a noticeable way, it is imperative that i have a barber who is trans friendly. because people can absolutely react badly to discussions about pronouns, but when there is a physical marker of Gender Difference, that's when i noticed people started getting more aggressive. that's when i started to notice "oh this isn't just really uncomfortable and shitty anymore, this person doesn't want to mock me, this person wants to hurt me." both sucked, but one was significantly more terrifying to experience.

an example that is probably more relevant to the topic and what's currently happening in my life is a conversation i had with a friend of mine who is nonbinary, was assigned female at birth, presents feminine, and has no interest in any aspect of medical transition. love that for them! but trying to talk to them about losing my access to hrt is nearly impossible because they simply do not understand the severity of it. they have compared me losing a job because my coworkers found out i was trans, and being unable to do anything about it because my state is an at-will state, to their coworker misgendering them their first day at work when they were not wearing their usual pronoun pin.

does getting misgendered at work suck? yeah. does it suck to have to wear a pin with pronouns on it just to get people to use the correct ones? yeah. is this indicative of a larger societal problem with cis normativity and the gender binary? absolutely. but the sting of being misgendered in the moment and having to correct someone (who from then on used the correct pronouns) is absolutely not the same as losing your health insurance and only source of income and housing all within the span of two months.

the problem isn't that You Must Be This Oppressed To Talk, the problem is that interrupting a conversation about the government legislating your right to exist to center a moment of personal discomfort is an asshole thing to do.

Generally plot synopsis of my fwhimmy tangled au. Because I have no one else to tell this too but tumblr dot com

Basically when Jimmy was young, the cod and salmon were very big enemies, and whatever was happening was making the cod deathly sick. To protect him, Lizzie hid her brother and herself in a tower. But as the years passed, the problem was slowly solved, and now all the fish folk get along pretty well. But Lizzie had always told Jimmy the outside was dangerous, and he had to stay inside. She wasn't she how to tell him otherwise, but considered doing so. Eventually she starts lying, so things won't change and she can keep him close forever, while also enjoying the life she'd started to build outside the tower. (I have more thoughts and ideas for Lizzies character here don't you worry. She's very complex and I can't wait to dig into that more >:])

For his whole life, Jimmy is stuck in the tower. He doesn't mind it really, but he can see a river just outside his window. His instincts are always telling him to go to the water!! Go to the river!! But he's a little scared, admittedly. But but, he's also eighteen and maybe it would be a good birthday present. Maybe Lizzie would let him leave the tower, just once, on his birthday? She doesn't, but it's a good attempt, and it only makes Jimmy more motivated to leave no matter what.

And then we have fwhip, the prince of their kingdom. The royal family has its own issues, but in short they leave the prince feeling a more than a little slighted. Like his sister Gem gets more attention than him. So naturally, he starts acting up, starts doing petty crimes, because they can't arrest him. The only thing they can do is scold him and lock him in the castle, which he can always sneak out of.

One day, when the summer festival is being set up, fWhip almost ruins it. Which means he's in pretty good trouble and currently being chased down. (the two thieves flynn allies with in the movie are replaced by sausage and joey, guards who are very close to the head guard, xornorth) So he runs from the guards, and manages to loose them in the woods. And in the woods he finds a tower with a boy in it, who knocks him out lol. But once fwhip is awake, Jimmy seizes his opportunity. If fwhip takes him to the water, then he'll keep the prince out of trouble. And fwhip agrees, because its the only way to get back into town without being arrested (and maybe he thinks jimmy is kinda pretty)

and then he learns about lizzie, whos his friend, and how he's been keeping her brother hostage and lying to him for what has to be a decade at this point. safe to say fwhip is. greatly horrified. he realizes he cant let jimmy go back to the tower, and starts workshopping a plan to get them both back to the castle safely. he doesn't care about whatever trouble hes in anymore, jus getting jimmy out of his horrible living situation.

You know the bar they go to in the movie? Yep, that's fill of hermits!! fwhip frequents the tavern when he cans, so he knows they can help him. [insert the i got a dream song here. btw.] He talks to Grian about jimmy's situation, and manages to sneak both of them out. But they are chased by sausage and joey again, who have started working with lizzie after she returned home to find jimmy missing. she says fwhip kidnapped him, and sausage is doubtful, but he believes it, if only a way to get his friend in custody temporarily. Lizzie also overhears what happens at the tavern, so she starts making her own plan to stop fwhip and jimmy before they get to the castle.

also gandalf, gems cat, fills the sidekick animal role. he just shows up randomly to help them/be a problem. he helps them get away from joey and sausage, and then the cat is gone again. after that, fwhip and jimmy manage to get into the town, and enjoy the summer festival. they meet the rest of fwhip and lizzies friends, the empires crew, and all of them adore jimmy to bit. he bonds with joel especially, not having any idea that he's dating lizzie.

eventually, they have to leave the festival, because both lizzie and the guards have caught up to them. they manage to slip away that evening as everyone prepares to send the lanterns out, but gems onto them. probably because of her magic act tbh, who bothered them the wholeee festival.

The lantern scene happens. Jimmy and Fwhip, on a boat all by themselves with lanterns around. And yes, unlike tangled they do kiss! But the moment is over once they get to shore sadly. lizzie is there to take jimmy home, all while fwhip gets taken into custody a few feet away. jimmy does start protesting that he doesnt want to go home, but lizzie is too scared to let him leave the tower forever, and starts dragging him back anyways.

in the meantime, fwhip manages to convince sausage and joey of whats really happening. they're both a little reluctant, but they give him a palace horse and let him go after lizzie and jimmy. they're to go find xornorth at what remains of the festival, and fill them in before heading out to the tower themselves. gandalf leads gem and joel over to them as theyre talking to xornorth, and the two of them join in on going to the tower.

back at said tower, jimmy is fucking miserable man. he just wants to go back to the water, and fwhip. As soon as lizzie has her back turned he's sneaking out the window, only find the little intervention party waiting for him outside. i wont go into full detail of the scene, but quite a lot happens. i could do it more justice when i actually write it, compared to this quick little summary (its not the only detail im admitting haha)

in the end, all of them go back to the palace, lizzie being held as a prisoner for a little bit. but eventually, she requests to go back to the tower. they let her, figuring it better if she's further away from jimmy right now. he still cares about her, but he's pretty traumatized from what happened that night. but he heals with time, and by getting closer to fwhip and the empires crew. (at first fwjip isnt sure if he should try to advance the relationship anymore, but they get there eventually, once jimmy has healed enough <3)

i think im going to end it with lizzie saying sorry. jimmys not going to accept her back right away, nor is everyone else, but that will take time. shes going to finally leave that tower herself, and thats all that matters. that theyre both our of the tower for good.

i have a lot more planned but again, this is just a general summary. very excited to finally get writing it hehe

1. The character everyone gets wrong

The way that ‘Loghain Mac Tir’ immediately comes to mind probably says a lot about the way he’s portrayed in fandom, huh… While I obviously don’t expect anyone to see my blorbos 100% the same as me, sometimes I’ll see takes that are so diametrically opposed mine that I’m just like: huh.

That being said, Loghain is a very complex and layered character, and all the different possible ways to read his motivations only leads credence to that fact.

Anyway, here are my own preferences/biases when it comes to Loghain:

1) Maric is Loghain's everything, and not only that, but the Maric that lives in Loghain’s head is even larger than the man himself was in real life. Personally, I like how this explains the discrepancy between the way Loghain describes Maric (as though he farts rainbows) and the way Maric is described in the tie-in novels (rather punchable).

Sure, they might've gone through a lot of shit together, but Loghain is completely abnormal about Maric and I love that for them.

2) I think Cailan’s death at Ostagar wasn't planned, per se, but rather that Loghain was willing to take that loss if necessary.

And look, Loghain did try to warn Cailan that fighting on the front lines would be foolhardy, but Cailan refused to listen and well… what can I say other than Loghain knows how to pick his battles? 😌

3) Loghain is not very politically savvy: I like to think Anora got her more astute people skills from her mother.

That being said, I think people sometimes forget how at the start of Origins, Loghain is a man deeply in mourning: in the preceding years he’s lost his best friend and his wife.

I feel this is also part of why he doesn’t realise he can rely on Anora: fully accepting that she’s a capable adult and no longer a little girl with pigtails as skinned knees would be to accept that there is no going back, he can never go back: the happiest, most purposeful part of his life is behind him and who is he, other than a father with a disobedient daughter, and the general of a nation that is starting to rise up against him?

Loghain basically suffers from like, a catastrophic loss of identity during the course of the game and is pretty much ready to die by The Landsmeet. If anything he’s glad to have found such a worthy opponent in the Warden: it means Ferelden’s fate is in good hands.

4) Leading to my last point: a combination of all the factors above means Loghain is very open to manipulation (by Howe, by Anora, by the Warden should they so choose).

That being said, I don’t think that absolves him of his complicity in his crimes, and especially not the slavery in the alienage. He very much knew the elves were being sold, but had also accepted that the alienage was lost to the darkspawn. I can certainly see someone with Loghain’s background deciding that giving the elves at least some chance of survival as well while also making more money for the war effort as the practical choice. While it’s not the moral choice, it is a pragmatic one and Loghain is a pragmatist.

Anyway my actual point is that while some Loghain fans might try and minimise his involvement in the alienage, I find it far more fascinating to explore through the lens of who he is a person. After all, I am not looking at fiction to inform my morals wholesale, but rather to explore other perspectives, and I am especially drawn to how people can justify atrocities to themselves, SO! Here I am, sharing my Loghain thoughts on tumblr dot com 😌

That weed post that's going around is so wild LOL. It is indeed common for people to be made sick or overwhelmed by the smell of weed smoke, vapes, cigarettes, perfume, or any number of other sensorily difficult scents and it's ok for them to expect that strangers do not expose them to those things in public places, or, with some reasonable discussion, in living situations like room shares or apartments. That is pretty basic disability-friendly stuff. It is not okay to call the cops on your friends for smoking weed. Duh. I can't believe someone on that post admitted to doing that, almost sounded like a troll but I know people are also deranged. "Why would you frame the thing about scents/smoke in terms of disability? You're obviously escalating this to a level where it doesn't need to be, and people are just being losers!" you may say. Well. I'm sure plenty of people who complain about overwhelming scents do so in a way that is annoying or sounds uncool, but there is actually no prize available to people who are cooler than anyone else, and many people who cannot handle scents in public settings are either unaware that it's a ND thing or don't really want to frame it as such. Either way, even if the most annoying dweeby narc of a person on earth was complaining about perfume or smoke, it doesn't really change the fact that for many perfectly reasonable people with sensory issues or other disabilities, it is a problem and one they deserve accommodation for in public places. I have a friend who has a severe allergy to some of the alloys used in cigarettes, to the point where she will have a stroke if she's exposed to them for too long. At music festivals (which she enjoys going to) she absolutely sounds like a huge dweeb and a buzzkill asking people to not smoke outside the designated smoking areas, but it's for her own health and safety and she shouldn't have to disclose her entire medical history to someone just to get them to stop blowing smoke in her face. She is a very cool chick and does plenty of fun recreational drugs, but even if she wasn't she'd be within her rights to complain about people who smoke in extremely public spaces. And it's worth saying as polls about things like sex and drugs and other fun stuff proliferate: if you spend too much time on tumblr dot com repeatedly trying to prove yourself to be marginally cooler than the other collected loser goofballs on this site you yourself look like a huge dweeb. Just an FYI. If you like having sex or doing drugs you can just post about those things and celebrate them.

need it on the official record that i do love moiraine and lan's relationship sososo much!!!

i love the implicit understanding they have with each other, based partially in the fact that they are both heirs separated from a crown for very different reasons. moiraine and lan are both people who cannot go back to where they came from, whether they want to or not. so there is this shared sense of loneliness, and drift that they share, wrapped up in the idea that they probably aren't going to survive the last battle (or even the journey to it) and would rather sacrifice themselves than have anyone they care for or, in moiraine's case for some people deem more necessary to The Pattern (although to be fair to her, this often still means having a certain level of care for them she just um. wasn't raised to know how to show any healthy positive emotion i don't think) moving in companionable silence eternally Searching™

i've grown increasingly haunted by this exchange they have at the end of new spring:

like............"surrender after you are dead. yes." is the sentiment set up as one of the core values of their partnership starting from the very moment she decides to ask lan to be her warder. surely, this will end well for all parties and will NOT have any tragic implications!

it sets up this really harsh poetic symmetry (surprise) when they have their Big Fight™ in the great hunt. moiraine LITERALLY invokes how they first met with funny little jokes abt him throwing her in a pond to get his defenses down so she can jump scare him w an intense re-examination of their relationship. the whole fight is basically her forcing him to think on his toes so she can examine him at his most basic emotional level in order to try and expose the truth abt how he feels, going from playful to painful at the flip of a coin lol. and he's aware of it!!! him calling her out on it and her answering back w patented Aes Sedai Speak, in a relationship that should be free of such manipulation.....

the real master stroke here, though, is the fact that the chapter is from moiraine's pov. we get to see her own inner thoughts about it and see that beneath the devastating chess game she's playing she's just as heartbroken at having to play it. the argument is really a crystalization of what makes her such an interesting character for me -- she is leveraging absolutely brutal social dynamics in order to, from her perspective, HELP someone she cares for deeply.

essentially, moiraine is saying that in his love for nynaeve he's found something to live for beyond sacrifice and that means that their bond to each other must be terminated. he can create a new life, and bc she thinks she understands how everything will play out moiraine thinks she is just cutting down the time before he realizes he can and will ask for her to dissolve the bond anyway. he isn't wed to death anymore, leaving the heavy implication that moiraine still is.

which sets us up for something really interesting for them in s2 i think! while their relationship in the show seems to generally be under less strain than it is where we see them in the mainline series, there remains another crucial difference btw the books and the show -- moiraine has siuan!!!!! im rly excited to see how that comes into play in terms of any potential interpretation of this fight/the breakdown of lan and moiraine's relationship bc it makes her decision to push him away feel even more hypocritical and rooted in her tendency to be self-sacrificing to the point of self loathing.

tldr for anyone just trying to figure out what this might all mean for season two according to one singular poster on tumblr dot com: in the books moiraine feels very........time to burn all bridges so no one can chase after me on my suicide mission basically and i can't say im NOT excited to see if that's where she ends up in the show (to live is to suffer etc etc)

Despite years of knowing it exists, I am still a SCP Foundation newbie who primarily obtains SCP knowledge through animated story-telling YouTube channels. So bear with me I guess. But I want to actually make a post in-tag talking about the woman from this SCP-978 log of SCP-106 here:

Almost every post I've seen that talked about it claimed the old woman to be SCP-106's wife. I think that's a reasonable prediction, only IF it ignores all of the popular theories of SCP-106's origins linked in his page. Of course, the beauty of SCP lore is that as a fan you get to decide what canon to believe and not to believe yourself. That also means that this log should have no effects on how people view SCP-106, but I want to discuss what I believe who this woman that the editor who added this log(http://www.wikidot.com/user:info/metheguy12) intended to be, since uh, I'm getting the idea that people are largely believing the woman to be SCP-106's spouse DUE to "Until Death" and "The Young Man" suggesting SCP-106 to be once human... despite how this seems unlikely when you consider the context of both stories.

So, firstly- "Until Death", the only story where SCP-106 as Robert Scranton is clearly stated to have a wife, Anna Lang wouldn't fit this narrative because if the woman was her, the Foundation would be able to identify at least how the woman "appears to be her". From that we can simply cross out the possibility of this log being about Robert Scranton-106 completely. If the SCP-106 MeTheGuy12 had in mind when adding this log followed the tale of "Until Death", there is NO FUCKING WAY that woman wasn't Anna. Or maybe it was. Maybe it was and the Foundation just decided not to name, not even mention the possibility of that woman being her. Maybe that's it. That's the whole mystery solved and by posting this on tumblr dot com MeTheGuy12 would find this post and prove me wrong and stupid, but that's so unlikely to happen haha have you even considered the real-godzekiel lore, the MeTheGuy12 lore and the tumblr dot com lore?????????? 😹😁💀

As for "The Young Man", if Corporal Lawrence had a wife, she would be 20-40 years old during the war because despite a few exceptions, there is a maximum age range. This means if the woman was his wife, it'd be her about 20 to 40 years after his "Incident", about year 1940 to 1960. Why's that, that century egg Lawrence would desire, specifically, to be with the 20-to-40-years-after-WW1-and-last-seeing-her and likely 40-to-70-years-before-the-time-this-log-was-written version of his wife? That doesn't make sense. (Or maybe. Okay. Okay maybe he and she just had a 20-40 age gap but that's fucking weird and I don't like it. ) Here's a list of who the woman could be that does make sense to me:

That woman's not a person that SCP-106 ever knew, but by desiring to be welcomed by her, it shows how despite his sadistic bloodlust and anomalous properties, he still desire the basic human need for acceptance and normalcy. If that's the case, the fact that the woman is old would be really interesting. Either that she must be as far off from the 10-25 age bracket as possible to not trigger violent tendencies or that the Old Man really just wanted an Old Woman to be with. I have no clue what I'm talking about.

That woman's meant to represent SCP-106 memory of a maternal figure or older relative. It's his mom, let's say. If he was 20-40 when he went to war, her mother being in her 60s definitely makes sense. If the woman was his mother, it'll also suggest that the place that he most desires to be in is the farm he grew up in. That's pretty sad I think, if you can't find untainted happiness in anywhere but childhood. I think.

Ok, last thing to point out: SCP-106's appearance does not change in his photo. The text does not point out any differences that SCP-106 has in the photo compared to him in reality, despite probably his corrosive touch if nothing in this log suggests the wheat field to be affected by it. Something something wanting to be understood for who he is and not just someone that he once was something something.

and you can say you don't affirm him, but by calling him 'she' (a female pronoun), you are. i get you saying you register him that way because he passes well enough, but he still isn't female and shouldn't be referred to as such. making exceptions is how we got here

see this is what i mean about reading comprehension. my friend doesn't identify as a woman, as i directly said. i don't put the same weight on pronouns or language in general in every context that you do. I don't believe that calling someone "she" has the power to transform. that's the entire answer.

The fact that you claim I am "referring to my friend as female" by using she pronouns in some of the posts, despite all of said posts being about the fact my friend is male... idk what to tell you. I simply have never really felt that level of importance in pronouns. In fact as a kid, I was the youngest ever winner of the school spelling bee, but couldn't get pronouns straight to save my life. Complete clarity of communication was provided in this post. It wasn't in the exact wrapping you wanted, but it was provided. You will live. Liam is a masterful player who is also a DM and it shows here : he wants to throw threads of the next arc, and wants them to come up organically. Also Caleb clearly stating his goals is so refreshing, thinking back on what he used to do and who he used to be at the beginning of the campaign. Asking for help ? Character growth ! Also the idea that both Beau and Yasha find meaning in the Mighty Nein... "you guys are my family"... UGLY CRYING AT THE FOUND FAMILY TROPE

saying only barry messed up his and sally’s child and she had to watch barry rot him from the inside out is sort of missing the point. when it’s very evident her impact is a cycle of abuse and she treats her child the way her mother treated her and has no care how he’s treated is i think even more depressing. sally is no where as horrible of a person as barry but what’s happening to her child is very clearly half her fault, that poor child deserves so much more than both of them

So I'm not saying your analysis is wrong but I do kinda take umbrage with the "missing the point" as if this show has ever had only one reading to sink your teeth into!

I also never said that only Barry fucked up the kid, I said in my post that Sally watched Barry rot him. That's a flaw! She could've stepped in and done something for this child but she's been so thoroughly gutted by her parents and the industry and Barry and her own narcissism that she's extremely content to let other people take the fall because she doesn't have the instinct to be anything other than an observer!

I wasn't really talking about this in the context of John's life, I was talking about it in the context of Sally, and that's going to come out much more like "when you have to give your kid vodka because he hates you" and much less like "Sally is such an incompetent parent and person that she'd rather force this child into unconsciousness than face the discomfort of knowing she's hated."

My Review of American Royals by Katharine McGee

I know this is usually where I put my spoiler warning for my reviews but since I have decided that based on the nature of this book there aren't any major plot points that I want to talk about so this review will be spoiler free.

I will give this disclaimer though, if you're a die hard fan of this book then this review isn't for you. That isn't to say I'm going to drag this book through hell and back, but it honestly wasn't my cup of tea. I will be talking about the things in this book that I personally didn't like so if you don't want to see your favorite book besmirched by some random bitch on tumblr dot com then please keep scrolling.

On to the review!

American Royals gives all of us history nerds a peek into an alternate reality where George Washington became the king of the United States instead of its first president and how that would look in modern day. In this reality we also see how the peerage system works in the States and also how many monarchies in other parts of the world have survived. For example the French and Russian monarchies and the German principalities are alive and well in this book which was a very interesting touch that I enjoyed.

The book centers around the lives of the modern royals, Crown Princess Beatrice who is set to be America's first queen regnant, her younger sister Princess Samantha who is the exact opposite of Beatrice and suffers from an extreme case of middle child syndrome coupled with spare syndrome, and Samantha's twin Prince Jefferson a.k.a. Jeff (side note I think the name Jeff is gross and I agree with Daphne on calling him Jefferson) who is quite literally just there, chilling.

Now while I was intrigued with the concept of an alternate reality where the United States is a monarchy I honestly did not expect the book to go the way that it did. I know that just writing what life would be like with an American monarchy wouldn't sell and would be extremely boring, but let me tell you I didn't not expect to essentially get into a written telenovela. You get all of the classic traits of a novela, three (or maybe four, depends on how you count it) love triangles stacked on top of each other, betrayal, romance, dramatics, and then someone just randomly dying to advance the plot. What more can you want?

I say that but in reality I wasn't really a fan of it. Sure if you like soap operas and reality tv this book is for you, but I'm not really a fan of either so I honestly got to a point at the end where all of the plot points converged and it all just got so overwhelming for me that I struggled to finish the last, like 10% of the book. That being said I'm not going to keep reading this series, though I did Google if Beatrice ended up with my favorite boy Connor just because he was my favorite and I needed to know.

Speaking of characters I actually enjoyed all of them, I was just kind of annoyed with the insane amount of love triangles happening to them. I honestly didn't hate Daphne, I don't condone literally any of her actions because she was evil but I sympathized with her motives. In the words of a wise man, "cool motive, still murder," (no she didn't murder anyone btw, but that would've been a great plot point).

Though if you read my Gods of Jade and Shadow review you might expect my favorite character to be Nina, in Latina solidarity, but she might've actually been my least favorite character. Actually her and Daphne are tied in that spot. Main reason being how they're both juxtaposed in their endeavors to win over Jefferson, and I really want to tell them it is quite literally not that serious. We get some not very feminist differences between them, Nina is "not like other girls" and a normal girl while Daphne is the embodiment of femininity and has the makings of a princess. Also Jeff fully cheated on Daphne and then broke up with her over the phone the next day and then tried to get at Nina. And then he proceeded to play with both of their emotions and yet both of these girls were fighting over him? Those are some serious red flags, I'm going to need these girls to get up, they deserve better.

I did honestly like the relationship between Beatrice and Sam, you get to see how they're opposites for the same reason, if that makes sense. Beatrice is meant to be the next queen so she has to be perfect and because Sam is the spare she wants to be the opposite of Beatrice and a party girl who's impulsive and puts herself first. I genuinely enjoyed their dynamic and how they play off of one another.

I didn't like Jeff at all, which honestly he might be my least favorite character and Nina and Daphne get the spot right above him. Literally this dude contributes nothing to the plot besides being there for two girls to fight over him and have their own character growth because of him. It's not very feminism or Bechdel test of them (though they do have a conversation which might pass if I remember correctly). The author even tells us in the story that Sam and Jeff are supposed to be very close but we don't see it, there's only maybe two instances where you can see their close bond but really nothing beyond that. Also there is literally no interactions between Jeff and Beatrice despite them being siblings, and I get that part of the plot is that they're not super close with her and they haven't been since they were kids but like come on, they couldn't have had at least one conversation in the whole book.

I do feel like the book was definitely marketed more towards a teen audience which is partially what I get for being a grown ass adult (I'm only in my early 20s so like technically I'm closer in age to a 19 year old than a 30 year old) reading YA fiction. But either way even if I was still a teen I don't think I would've enjoyed the book more than I do now, partially due to me being a weird kid who liked to consume media that was action heavy rather than romance heavy, which honestly still holds true to this day. I will say the book isn't bad, it's just honestly not for me, I can appreciate the writing and imagination that comes with creating this alternate reality, which major props to author for committing to doing that. Overall rating, not for me but for someone else out of ten. Even though I said I wouldn't continue to read the series if someone has a really good pitch I'll perhaps give it a shot but you have to do some serious convincing.

(I hope this question isn't too personal, and it's totally fine if you don't want to answer.) I have a young dog that I've considered rehoming but haven't, and I'm wondering if i should have/still should. How did you decide to keep Finch, back when you were considering rehoming? And at what point did you know that you had made the right choice? I love my little dude but i still wonder.

I can't answer whether or not you should rehome your dog - I don't know you, I don't know you dog, I dont know your situation. What I CAN tell you is what lead up to me wanting to rehome Finch and why I didn't.

This is going to be a little long so bear with me.

I've mentioned this before on this blog but it is not something I go into detail about often: Finch is reactive.

He has always been reactive. He was reactive before I even picked him up to take him home and he is still reactive. Should I have taken him home? Probably not. But I did and we managed. Finch is a type of dog that will never NOT be reactive. His reactivity can be managed, but it will never truly go away.

To give you some background, if you've ever met me or Finch in-person, and I've talked about Finch's breeder, you might have heard me say this before; Finch is a genetic fluke. He is the dog that people talk about when they say 'responsible breeding doesn't guarantee 100% temperamentally sound puppies all the time'. I met his parents before I got him, I met his older siblings from the same pairing. None of them had issues. His mom is still one of the most social and friendly Belgians I've ever met.

I got Finch when I was eighteen. He was supposed to be my first sport dog. I had just gotten out of college dorms and I wanted a dog that I could do sports with because I loved Sheba, but she could never be a sport dog for a multitude of different reasons (the biggest being physical issues that would lead to a very high risk of injury). I knew I wanted a Groen for a long time so I got Finch.

I don't know if I could properly stress how bad Finch was as a puppy - looking at my old tags on this blog is funny, because there were times that I was so stressed out about him that I cried myself to sleep, but on tumblr dot com all I would say was 'he is good 90% of the time, but that 10% is rough'. I didn't elaborate then because there is some sort of shame in getting a dog, only to have it be reactive in the way Finch was. I don't feel shame about it now: Finch would be labeled as a dangerous dog for the majority of his first year of life. He was a bite risk. In some very specific situations, he still is.

I enrolled Finch in puppy school when he was around five months old (I got him as an older puppy - around 4.5 months). Finch flunked out of puppy school for being a reactive shithead, so I ended up taking the same class twice just to try and get a handle on this behavior. Finch's breeder took the first session with us but didn't take the second one. I very vividly remember when the trainer asked to see Finch and have me leave the building to see if that affected his behavior, and when I came back in, she told me "Your dog just tried to bite someone". If you've never experienced that, I highly recommend against it because it's possibly one of the worst feelings in the world.

I ended up moving before I could take a third puppy class. I wasn't super comfortable with how the trainer handled dogs anyway and there weren't any fantastic trainers around me, so for a while, I kinda did things on my own. I resented Finch at the time and that wasn't something that was fair to him or to me at the time. That was the point where I almost sent him back because I was states away with no good dog trainer options that could even begin to handle a dog like Finch.

I can't tell you why I didn't send him back at that point. I don't think I know why I kept him. Or, at least, I don't remember. It might have been something to do with the social pressure of getting a purebred dog, trying to make your first entrance into the dog world, only to fail within a few months. It could have been because it was true that Finch was a good dog that 90% of the time. Again, I truly don't know why I didn't rehome him because I had all the right reasons to do so.

The most important thing to remember about rehoming a dog is that there's no shame in doing what is best for the dog and for you. Sometimes things don't work out, and that is okay. I got lucky with Finch. It worked out for me. But that might not be the case for you, and that is okay as well.

My point is that people are quick to point out misogyny regarding one character, but then perpetuate it with another. I do know! In fact, I have some book recommendations for you. I read most of these in grad school, some in undergrad, but either way if you're interested in a specific topic re: feminism, critical race theory, or critical theory in general, have a look at my shelf:

I will point out Of Woman Born there towards the right; I write a lot about emotional labor as a traditionally feminine labor that is under-recognized and under-appreciated, and my first taste of that idea came from that book! Elain and Mor in particular are the ones who perform a LOT of this labor in the series, which I see both the characters and fans dismissing. That's why I harp on it a lot, and so that book could be a really interesting read if you are concerned about misogyny!

You'll also notice The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf up there. Now, that is an oldie and a controversial one at that. I read it when I was a teenager and I think that since then, a lot of the facts she used have been debunked, and she continues to write some questionable shit. It's still good to know the history of these ideas and how they've changed over time, and it was one of the first books I read as a baby feminist, so I just keep that copy.

However, many of these books are foundational when it comes to critical theory, specifically feminism, race, power, etc. If you're interested in learning more, let me know!

(The shelf you can see below that is mainly French books, from when I studied that. Obviously they aren't relevant to this discussion, but I can recommend some of those as well!)
