I'm doing this!!!!
We're releasing a brand new dog training podcast this summer and I'd love support for it. You can follow Caninections on Instagram or Facebook for updates and announcements when the first episode drops!
@seagulley tagging since you also asked a similar question!
The answer is yes! I have "required competition frisbees" and "everyday/generic competition frisbees". Generally in competitions that don't have dog disc requirements (like UpDog or UFO or Toss & Fetch), I'll throw SuperSonics (smaller distance discs & my favorite discs to throw) or I'll throw SuperHeroes (pretty generic durable disc). I have a preference for Hero discs but I also enjoy the few Discovering the World discs that I've thrown. Once a disc is used in competition, depending on how beat up it is, I'll either use it a bit more in another competition or retire it to my practice disc collection. Even in events that don’t require a specific dog disc, like UpDog, they still have different disc amounts per game that range anywhere from 1 (frizgility) to unlimited (Far Out but you’ll only throw four max) and can vary in between (some games are four, some are 8, freestyle is 10). Nettle used to be pretty bad about having a color specific favorite so I’d get groups of 8 in the same color.
Some disc competitions require specific discs to play. Skyhoundz will only allow Hyperflite discs and there are separate divisions in Xtreme Distance (one of Skyhoundz's three series). To separate that even further, each division in that series has a different disc that I'll throw. That's probably about 10-15 discs for a single competition not including the ones that I'll need to practice with since I very rarely throw Hyperflite outside of a Skyhoundz competition.
The Quadruped is another distance competition that requires light plastic. the Quad's rules is "fastback design but less than 110 grams" which includes a fair amount of discs (Hero Airs & Xtras, Discovering the World fastbacks, and a couple others). I usually throw Airs in that competition. However, because it's both light plastic (low durability) & distance (need discs that don't have holes in them for the disc to fly farther), it means that I really only get to use a disc once before Nettle absolutely obliterates it. In a single quad day, if you make it to the finals, you would need around 18 discs because you'll throw 18 times. So I'll always have at least 18 brand new Hero Airs for that competition alone.
re: winter splash league has been the wildest time
i originally signed up bc its winter and we have nothing better to do. nettle mostly jumps in senior (sometimes junior) so that’s the division i put her in. nettles jumps on the first day range from 16ft (average for her) to a whopping 6ft (….yeah). we go every other week and she is steadily improving each time until she makes that 23” jump and that’s her PB for this event.
i assume ranks are based on average and that 6” kills it so i show up at finals to try and do the LCQ for funsies only to find out that not only is nettle already IN the finals but she is holding FIRST and MASTERS (the division above the one she normally jumps in).
so we go into the finals again not expecting much bc she has already crushed her official NADD PB and are against the top four other dogs (and again…..she jumped……6ft…… the first day i cannot emphasize that enough it was so funny). but this dog comes in FIRST. in a division ABOVE the one she normally competes in
i signed nettle up for winter splash league not expecting much (she jumped 6ft the first day 💀) but she ended up crushing her PB of 20’0 by Three Whole Feet
