A hideous article in the Washington Post goes out of its way to flaunt its disregard for journalistic ethics in the service of exacerbating the national anti-Semitism crisis. The piece itself is the reporting equivalent of corking the bat, filling an article with examples that undermine its thesis and hoping nobody looks inside.

The topic of the piece, written by Pranshu Verma, is the assertion that cancel culture is being applied to defenders of Hamas, so now cancel culture is bad. But the most objectionable part of the article is where Verma misrepresents an incident so egregiously that the credibility of the whole piece crumbles to dust.

To be clear, the rest of the article isn’t accurate either. For example, people weren’t being punished for “criticiz[ing] Israel,” as the headline declares, but usually for behavior such as destroying posters or chanting genocidal slogans and the like. Unfortunately, that sort of obfuscation is ubiquitous in media reporting on the aftermath of Hamas’s massacre on Oct. 7. The truly appalling part of the article is in the following excerpt:

Since Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7 and Israel responded by attacking Gaza, groups have poured resources into identifying people with opposing political beliefs, sometimes deploying aggressive publicity campaigns that have resulted in profound real-world consequences. Within weeks of Oct. 7, ‘doxing trucks’ prowled the campuses of Harvard, Columbia and Princeton, displaying the names and photos of students and professors who had signed statements declaring solidarity with Palestinians. In January, a Rutgers Law School student sued the university, alleging that he had faced discriminatory disciplinary action after sharing what he deemed ‘pro-Hamas’ messages from his classmates with school administrators.

So here’s how the Washington Post frames the Rutgers situation: Pro-Hamas people are having their lives ruined by Jews who highlight their public comments, and this Rutgers fellow is an example not only of that but of essentially doxxing. (Doxxing means to reveal personal identifying information that is either nonpublic or requires enough effort to find that it is, in a practical sense, nonpublic.)

Here’s what actually happened. Members of the Student Bar Association sent their group chat anti-Semitic and pro-Hamas messages after the Oct. 7 massacre, and an Orthodox Jewish law student in the chat, Yoel Ackerman, responded. He shared the messages with the Rutgers Jewish Law Students Association. For this, the law school opened disciplinary proceedings against Ackerman, with the law school dean telling her colleagues “we have a Jewish law student seeking to take and publish the names of those he deems to be supporting Hamas.” He was then subject to a Sovietesque impeachment hearing from the Student Bar Association. Ackerman, without receiving sufficient explanation, was berated for three hours in what amounted to administrative harassment. In order to dispense of their troublesome Jew, the SBA then moved to suspend its own constitution in order to expel Ackerman.

That’s when Rutgers University stepped in, and briefly suspended the SBA while it could sort out the mess that Hamas propagandists and their enthusiastic supporters among the deans had made of the school. The SBA was soon reinstated.

This, the Washington Post tells us, is an example of a Jew oppressing the poor gentile.

This is not biased reporting. It is Jew-baiting propaganda with a long and very disturbing history. The rest of the article, meanwhile, is biased reporting: Verma simply launders the exterminationist language of domestic extremists into legitimate criticism of a foreign government.

The whole article is science fiction. But the apology the paper owes Ackerman is very real.

It should be something that begins with idealistic goals, and then spins off into a quagmire. It will need to be a memorial that can remain endless, as a tribute to an endless war.

Seth Moulton quoted in an article by Elliot Ackerman in Smithsonian Magazine (2019). How Should We Memorialize Those Lost in the War on Terror?

Americans have erected countless monuments to wars gone by. But how do we pay tribute to the fallen in a conflict that might never end?

After reading Jon Schwarz's piece in The Intercept about the public comment period for the Global War On Terror Memorial I proceeded to make myself feel a little sick with anger envisioning inappropriate memorial ideas.

In real life, everyday I enounter service members who suffer as a result of a very long and ongoing war. I care about them and the consequences of these wars.

Ackerman piee linked and a recent piee in The Washington Post changed my perspective about this public somment period. I doubt that I will post a comment, but with Akerman's intervention at least I can imagine making a genuine comment.

"[Jacobin:] There’s a passage in one of your books that really stuck with me: 'In any community some individuals, especially men, seek dominance over all others. Such aggrandizers generally are willing to take substantial risks of physical harm in aggressively establishing and defending their dominance.'

[Timothy Earle:] Yes. These are sometimes called 'triple A' personalities: aggrandizers, accumulators, acquisitors. They have a desire for power and consider themselves important people. It’s probably biologically rooted, but it is highly variable. Some people have that drive, and some people do not. The question is, do they come to power, or are they resisted?...

[Jacobin:] But an individual chief obviously can’t physically control or defend the land by himself. To take power, he needs the support of others.

[Timothy Earle:] Yes. In my book on how chiefs come to power, I identify three primary sources of power. One is the economy, of which property rights is the basis. The second is military power — the warriors. And the third is religion or ideology, which provides legitimization.

The chief has specialists in each area. So, in economy, he has land managers. In warfare, he has warriors. And in religion, he has priests. These are what I call 'attached specialists.' They are power specialists who are attached to a chief’s network. All three types are critical, but I see the economy as the bedrock.

Take the example of warriors. The question is, how can you control the warrior? You control the warrior by controlling the political economy. He is your man. He receives his weaponry from you, he receives a piece of land to support himself with slaves through you.

Or look at religious leaders. They require facilities, churches, temples, religious monuments. They require ceremonies — and ceremonies don’t just happen; they are extraordinarily expensive. Somebody has to pay for that. Somebody has to put on the feast, to pay for all of the ritual paraphernalia. Religion is expensive, warriors are expensive. It’s the ability to control the political economy that allows you to control these sources of social power centrally.

[Jacobin:] Can you give an example of how that process played out?

[Timothy Earle:] Well, my classic case is Hawaii. Hawaii and the other Polynesian islands started to become settled about 1,500 years ago by populations that moved out of Melanesia, the area around New Guinea. They brought with them a sophisticated boat technology, which allowed them to get to the island, and they brought irrigation technology.

And what you see is that, on some islands, the irrigation is relatively minor and results in nothing unusual, but in other situations, like Hawaii, they were able to develop extensive irrigation. The degree to which irrigation was developed, and the ability to extract a surplus from it, is what allowed for the creation of a warrior elite attached to the chiefs.

Once the chiefs gained ownership of land through conquest, they supplanted any local leaders by appointing land managers — known as konohiki — to administer local people. The phrase in Hawaii is, 'The konohiki put us to work.' And from there, we can watch the whole progression of these irrigation systems and the development of social stratification…

With the development of chiefdoms, you always see the progressive separation of the leader from his group. In the Hawaiian case, and in some of the other cases in Polynesia, the chiefs are no longer of their local communities. They are considered to be of a separate race; they’re considered to be gods. They’re different. And that’s one of the key aspects of class formation — this ability to separate yourself ideologically and be demarcated materially from the hoi polloi."
