Antes de la fiesta de la Pascua, sabiendo Jesús que su hora había llegado para que pasara de este mundo al Padre, como había amado a los suyos que estaban en el mundo, los amó hasta el fin. Juan 13:1

El pasaje comienza con una parábola en acción en lugar de hacerlo con un discurso o con un mensaje. Empieza con Jesús lavándoles los pies a Sus discípulos, y en este asombroso suceso, aunque fue muy sencillo a pesar de serlo en muy extraños sentidos, Juan encuentra algunos significados muy profundos y notables. Hay dos movimientos que ve Juan en este suceso, y los reúne en el prefacio de este relato. Para empezar, Juan ve en esta asombrosa escena la evidencia y la demostración del amor inmutable de Jesús por Sus discípulos. Jesús sigue siendo considerado, compasivo y atento con Sus discípulos, cosa que impresiona a Juan, que se siente asombrado por el hecho de que Jesús no estuviese pensando acerca de Sí mismo, a pesar de que sabía que aquella era la hora dramática para la cual había vivido. Pero en lugar de ello, está pensando acerca de Sus discípulos. Él les enseña y les manifiesta amor, compasión y afecto hasta el fin.

La segunda escena tiene que ver con Judas. Juan ve en el acto de lavar los pies una demostración de la verdad que se halla en Jesús, de la asombrosa pasión que elimina toda pretensión e hipocresía y revela las cosas exactamente como son. En este acto dramático en el que Jesús se inclina para lavarle los pies a Judas, así como a los otros discípulos, Juan ve una manifestación de la honestidad de Dios, esa realidad de Dios que expone toda hipocresía, y por medio de esta revelación intenta apoderarse del corazón del traidor y mostrarle lo que le está sucediendo. Jesús se siente movido a hacer esto, dice Juan, siendo consciente de Su propia autoridad. El Padre había entregado todas las cosas en Sus manos; Él lo sabía. Sabía quién era y sabía que iba a ir a Dios. Así que, movido por este sentido de Su propia identidad y autoridad, Jesús comienza a hablarle directamente a Judas, exponiendo lo que estaba haciendo y a dónde se dirigía. Juan ve todo esto entrelazado en esta asombrosa escena: la entrega del amor que enseñaba hasta el fin y la pasión por la verdad que luchaba hasta el fin por la liberación de Judas.

Their friendship was the best part of this series and then Hank never showed up again.
