@dirtylimerick a little thought experiment for you. a conversation that would lead to a hospital room.

"Heyyyy, TK."

TK was sitting at a little table close to the kitchen at the 126, nursing a mineral water, though really his fingernails were tracing out patterns and circles into the table's surface. Caught in a space that he had been caught in semi-regularly, since he got back. Only four or five months. It wasn't a super long time to be back on the job, and it was only six months since they'd pulled him out of a building he himself had set on fire (no better way to guarantee his family would find him), and since the man who'd taken him had died. So this was allowed, right? A little... spacing out.

His eyes lifted a little, and he found Captain Vega standing there, watching him, her eyebrows drawn. The rest of his family were off somewhere, playing some game in the rec room. He should join them. Most of the time, most of the time TK joined them and it was fine and he had fun. It was a good time. He loved being here and he loved his family.

Captain Vega was still waiting on an answer so TK said, in a voice that seemed outrageously loud for how much he was holding in at the moment, "Hey, Cap."

She took it as invitation, but TK knew she would. She slipped into the seat across from him and, not without a breath to ready himself (self-soothing), TK met her eye 'cause he knew she wanted something from him. It made something turn over in his stomach. Was she going to tell him he wasn't settling in right? Tell him she needed to cut her losses, he'd been out of the job too long, he wasn't part of the team properly anymore?

The worries were silly. He didn't bother to voice them 'cause there was no way Captain Vega was going to say anything like that. He loved her. (She loved him.)

"How do you think you've been settling in?"

"Good." Oh, this was a relief. Oh, this one was easy. He responded by coming alive a little, sitting a little straighter: this was not a question he had any doubt about whatsoever, "Seriously. I mean - drove me crazy I couldn't be here. Passed physical with flying colours, the guys are amazing, I would genuinely," and he meant this with his whole entire heart, he leant forward to show her this, laid bare, splayed, absolutely no-holds-barrred, "rather be nowhere else other than here, Cap." He loved this place and he had only enjoyed his time back on the job. Patients with all sorts of injuries, including things TK had experienced himself, this was part of the job and he loved it. Being able to do something in that sort of situation, having steps to follow, ideas of what to prioritise, and a team to do those things with? No, he loved it so much sometimes his heart felt like it was gonna burst out of his chest it was so full. "I love you guys. I love the work." Easy-peasy. No questions asked.

Tommy watched him. He knew that she believed him, but her eyebrows drew together even further, a furrowed brow like she was trying to figure him out. "And we love you, TK," she said, because this was what she defaulted to when she was still thinking - being amazing and sharing the love with such ease he didn't think she was always even conscious of it. "We're a family. It is good to have you back."

"Thanks, Cap." Yeah, he knew. The way he got a little bit quieter, ducked as though not quite ready to face it but oh-so-ready-to-bask-in-it -- he knew. The smile Captain Vega was looking for was there, vague and melty and so content to have been reached back for, like that. "So, um..." maybe when he'd first started at the 126 he might not have had all the communication skills in the world, maybe he would have made her do the legwork, let her get there herself, but TK really was pretty steady here. Back at the 126, with his loved ones and his job he adored, this was good for him. He tackled it directly: "When you sat down you - you seemed pretty worried?"

Captain Vega leant forward, elbows on the table, palms pressed together. Engaged in the conversation. "Should I be?"

He would have loved to know what she was fishing for, but instead he shook his head a little, and shrugged just a bit, "I'm really OK, cap. I mean... there are nightmares, but I get through 'em, and they're mostly stopping. And - it's like when I was shot? Like I know it happened but I'm not... I don't want to use, or push anyone away, I mean - I'm not playing right now," with the guys, who were laughing in the background, "but they invited me, I just didn't finish my water." He had been looking really hard for the red flags and he hadn't found any of them, actually. The things that he knew were signs that things were going wrong, that something wasn't working, had all remained exactly the same. A shrug with one arm, and he brought up his free hand, palm-up, empty gesture, "I mean, I don't think I'm fine. But I don't ... I don't think it's gonna. Scar me for life, yknow?"

She watched him. TK knew that she believed him about this, too, but she was paying rapt attention in a way that TK couldn't quite ... pick out (what was she looking for?). "Hm," she said.

... "'Hm'?" he asked, not meaning it to be as sassy as it sounded.

After a moment to consider she leant did pose the question, "What were you thinking about just now? Before I interrupted?"

".. What?"

"You were somewhere else."

Was he?

He traced his thoughts back, stepping around where Captain Vega had come in, to the thing that had been semiregularly sitting on the peripheral, waiting to be acknowledged. There weren't a lot of things about Cale Erendreich that he needed to revisit, actually, a lot of it was just... you know, you... playing guessing games wasn't going to get him anywhere and TK was not the sort of person who needed the answers as to why some cruel man decided to be cruel one day, like. Sure maybe they would help or maybe they wouldn't but he didn't care if he had them or not. Something bad had happened, his family had helped, and he'd survived. And now he was keeping going. He was pretty OK with that, actually.

But he hadn't been thinking about Cale Erendreich before Tommy had come in. He'd been thinking about the guy who took the photos. Sean. He'd been thinking about...

"Um..." this was, like. This was silly, right. "You know the..." (Tommy listened intently). TK shrugged. "I don't even know if it matters."

"It matters to me."

How do you put words to that sort of thing? They had only had minimal updates about the outcome for the other man freed from the cabin in the dead of night in mid-October. They'd been separated pretty quickly and he knew Sean had been interrogated for the photos and the... maybe the loyalty? TK didn't know what was there but he wouldn't have called it loyalty, but Sean had been speaking to police the last time TK had seen him, wrapped up in a blanket, naked, cold, with an oxygen mask on that he needed to keep taking off to talk, if and when he ever felt like talking. He'd kept looking at the body bag that kept Cale, until someone had moved it out of sight.

How long have you been here? Long enough.

He'd heard down the grapevine of emergency responders that Sean had in fact been missing for seven years. His family had disappeared around the same time Sean had.

Nobody had even thought to miss him. Nobody had been alive to.

TK had always known his family was coming for him, and he had never once doubted that even if they missed him the first time, the first dozen times, they would come back.

He had never wanted to see Sean Falco again, and he still really didn't want to.

"TK, talk to me."

OK. Um. "There was this..." a breath, "moment. I guess. Before I set the fire, Sean caught me." He had stopped TK from trying twice, at that point, trying different things, different ways out.

"'Sean'?"

"The photographer." They had seen the photos - all of the 126 had. This had, remarkably, changed very little in the way they interacted, and TK would be grateful for the rest of his life about that. "Um. I don't know if he knew what I was doing, but... he'd stopped me twice, before, different things, I thought for sure he was gonna stop me this time."

"And he didn't?"

"Every other time I looked at this kid he looked dead, Cap." How was this something he could express. "Just... see-through."

"That's... not unusual. I mean, bad trauma can do that. If he was there as long as we think he was, it could make sense for him to be dissociated. His brain was in survival mode."

"Yeah, but he helped me set the fire." For just a split second, a moment, there had been some colliding, sudden, crash-of-a-moment sort of thing where Sean had looked at him trying to rig the collar properly, for the electric shock to hit right, and he'd come to hold it in place for him. Like - there was-- something rolled again, in his chest, "The amount of courage that kid had, Cap. God, the amount of times he must have tried, alone, and it didn't work. And he's alone again in a hospital room? Under police guard?" It had been six months and the rehab was still slow and TK wasn't sure if Sean was ever going to be released and certianly he had no idea about the trial, what was happening with the trial, if there was even gonna be one. Maybe he'd get deported. If Sean had ever had a visa TK was pretty sure he'd overstayed his welcome.

"So..." Tommy said, slow, still piecing this together: "are you saying you... you want to visit him?"

"No!" hands loosely thrown up, barely really off the table (they came back down with two light thunks) but frustrated nonetheless. What was he meant to do about this?? "I don't know. Someone should. Shouldn't they?"

"I - I don't really think there's a 'should' about this, honey."

Oh, don't call him honey, he wasn't going to survive it. He took a breath in, head rocking to the side, eyes looking for something to hold onto. He didn't want to go. He did not want to revisit that part of his life or even really to feel much for a man who had helped to keep him trapped, to keep him tortured. TK did not want him dead, and he wished Sean a speedy recovery, but he didn't want to know him and he did really want to care about him, either.

TK did not have a follow up, so they sat in silence a little while. Tommy watched him. TK kept his eyes down, head turned away, thinking.

"TK," Cap said. TK peeked up at her, glum, but only 'cause she'd asked him to. "I can't tell you if you want to see him again. But I can tell you you've been zoning out like this for weeks. When did you start thinking about this?"

A few weeks ago.

They both knew the answer. He tipped his head (nodded a little, lips parted) to confirm it, but did not voice it aloud.

Captain Vega enunciated very carefully when she said this, like he might not understand, "You are one of the most compassionate and caring people that I know, TK. If your head is telling you you've gotta do something about this then maybe you should listen to it. 'Cause I don't think you're gonna be able to turn that off. And I think you'll regret it if you don't."

A long beat. He thought about it. Then: "What would I even say to him, Cap?"

"The truth." Like it was as simple as that. "That it was awful. And you're out. And you're glad you're both alive."

A swallow. TK looked down again. A little ashamed to be at this point and still talking about maybe going to see the guy, he admitted, "I don't think I forgive him."

Captain Vega reached across the table, to put her hand over both of TK's. The physical reminder that she was there. That she and the 126 were not going anywhere, even when he said things that he thought needed to be 'admitted', things he thought he needed to be ashamed of.

"Why don't we go together," she said. "Just to the hospital. You don't have to go to the room, you don't have to speak to him. Just to see how you feel."

Reeling, for a moment.

"You'd do that?" just to - what, to stand there with TK?

"Of course."

He didn't want to go. He didn't want to speak to him. He didn't want to be put in a position where he had to maybe forgive him. He didn't want to do this.

He thought again about that look, and the seven years, and the wild amount of bravery it must have taken to try again, and only because TK had asked him to.

"... Do you think Nancy would come?"

Misogynoir Did Tory Lanez’ Dirty Work During His Trial

Tory Lanez’s trial following the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion uncovered the rampant misogynoir in the hip-hop community.

On Friday, December 23, Tory Lanez was found guilty on all three charges, including assault with a semi-automatic firearm, possession of a concealed, unregistered firearm, and negligent discharge of a firearm, following his 2020 shooting Megan Thee Stallion. The rap artist, legal Megan Pete, first declared Lanez as her shooter on Instagram live during the summer of 2020. She testified during the trial, saying Lanez fired a gun at her feet while shouting “dance b-tch” after a party in California.

The shooting incident created a massive conversation, but more specifically, pointed out the misogynoir that runs deeply in hip-hop and its online communities. Misogynoir is misogyny aimed toward Black women, so race and gender both play a part.

During Pete’s testimony, she revealed the damage the incident had done to her mentally and emotionally. “I wish he would have just shot and killed me [rather than] have to go through this torture,” she told the jury. The digital harassment that Megan endured came from various sources, including fellow rappers making fun of the traumatic incident and hip-hop blogs and commentators spreading false information about the situation and the trial.

“It feels like every man that’s in a position of power in the music industry, even people who are not even rappers, they never cared about what my side of the story was. They immediately took the side of this man and have been giving me hell for the last going on three years,” Megan testified.

During the trial, rap artists such as Joe Budden and 50 Cent (who have been accused of domestic abuse and charged with domestic violence, respectively) shared their thoughts on Pete. This fueled countless comments from outsiders who gave their opinions on the shooting. Since 2020, countless memes, conspiracy theories and hateful commentary about Megan became common on social media, proving why less Black women decide not to come forward about abuse than their white counterparts. The gaslighting and hate that follows their openness becomes too much to bear.

For Gabby Bulgarelli, senior producer on NPR’s podcast “Louder Than a Riot,” reporting on the trial and seeing the immense amount of false information showed that the hip-hop community does not value Black women.

“The [m]isinformation that has been reverberating around the internet during this trial is really dangerous because a lot of it is steeped in misogynoir, Bulgarelli told GU. “We have repeatedly seen unreliable sources push narratives aimed at delegitimizing the victimhood of the Black women in this trial [Megan and Kelsey] and reinforcing the power and protection of the Black man who is now the convicted aggressor [Tory]. These narratives have consistently — and could continue to — lead to violence and harm against Black women most notably the rampant cyberbullying both women faced.”

Tigidankay “TK” Saccoh uses her platform to combat the misogynoir of the trial as much as she can through her Instagram account Darkest Hue. “It was important for me to debunk the claims going around during this trial because there are so many blogs doing the exact opposite,” Saccoh said. “There were so many blogs vilifying Megan for her sex life and portraying her as a liar and a bad person.”

Some of these blogs and commentators shared false information without fact-checking, which led to thousands of people sharing the posts. Platforms such as RaphouseTV, No Jumper and Say Cheese has had to clarify their tweets due to them being factually incorrect.

Even now that the jury reached a verdict for the Tory Lanez trial, Say Cheese!, a YouTube account with a hefty following across the video platform, Twitter and Instagram, has shared a petition created by Tory Lanez’s supporters. Lanez’s fans are looking to appeal the ruling and the petition has received over 40,000 signatures.

“Under the comments, supporters of the petition are misgendering Megan Thee Stallion, accusing her of lying, and calling her misogynistic slurs,” Saccoh says. “A blog like Say Cheese would never share a petition supporting a cop who shot a Black man. These blogs enthusiastically wield misogynoir to pander to their pro-Black man, but anti-Black woman audience members.”

Kat Tenbarge, a tech and culture reporter at NBC News, found through her coverage of the trial that the desire for virality online has grown to a dangerous place. Spreading misinformation is viewed as just one way to grow acclaim.

“We’re seeing more and more misinformation play into the public understanding of legal cases, especially ones that involve celebrities,” Tenbarge told GU. “Social media is partially to blame, because blogs will adhere to popular opinions regardless of fact in order to go viral and make money. They are essentially incentivized to spread misinformation to succeed on these platforms. This puts the onus on the people being defamed or being hurt to take action because social media platforms don’t take responsibility for misinformation spread by users.”

Tory Lanez’ trial amplified the necessity of Black women having allies when they are vocal about violence. The trial also made it obvious why women are fearful of speaking about their experiences, as an army of misogynorists waits to tear them down. Now that the trial has reached a verdict, it’s time for more accountability and advocacy for Black women. Our lives are at stake.

GU Jams: Ar’mon Warren Is Preparing for Bigger and Better In 2023

The R&B singer credits real-life experiences to motivation in music.

For Ar’mon Warren, music fell into his lap way before YouTube. He began singing at three years old and playing the piano and drums with his little brother Trey. Church laid the foundation for his passion for the technical side of music, like the importance of tone and the difference between sopranos, altos and tenors.

In his hometown of Detroit, Michigan, he reflected on the limited opportunities for music and decided to take matters into his own hands. Back then, iPhones were expensive and out of reach, so Warren and his brother used to record and post content from a Samsung Galaxy until they finally convinced their mother to purchase an iPhone so they could post their content on Vine (yes, Vine).

Being in his teens, Warren had no clue that singing on the internet would catapult him into a long career and presence in the public eye where he could do what he truly loves: music. But his story does not end there. The 25-year-old has been in the YouTube game for about 10 years, becoming a veteran, and his new chapter has begun.

He also became a father to his daughter Legacy, preparing him to fully branch out as an independent artist. “We’re doing our solo thing right now,” Warren told GU. “Different moments in our [lives] led us to write songs that we feel are personal.”

Through those personal experiences, the genre that keeps him motivated to tell his story is R&B. Now, of course, there is a meaningful conversation surrounding the topic of the state of the genre. Still, Warren is definitely on the side of knowing it’s not dead, but it keeps him inspired.

“If you understand music, you could never get bored with R&B,” he said. “I love the production, how singers can put backgrounds [and] the way it’s melodic.”

He’s always open to everlasting learning, which encouraged him to make as much music as possible, leading him to score his first Billboard hit No. 11 for digital sales for his song “Hol’ It Down,” featuring his muse Reginae Carter.

While Warren was in the studio creating music, his producer Dwayne “D2” Washington, knew he found the right song for him. “He called me and was like, ‘Yo, I think I got it, I think I got the one,” he said. At that moment, he realized that was the type of hands-on collaboration that kept him inspired and encouraged when creating new music.

Warren knew he wanted the song to start with Carter expressing her wants and needs within a relationship, “I need you to reciprocate the energy that I’m going to reciprocate, because if you don’t, then I’m gonna be mad all the time, ‘cause I’mma be like ‘dang I wanna do this for him,’” she said in the song.

That intro leads to the rest of the song’s flow, sharing his perspective of how he will hold down his relationship. He reflected on how in the past, he was not inspired to get into the studio before. Still, once he started dating Carter, she brought that spark back into what he loved about making music: real-life experiences.

“She allowed me to be an artist,” Warren told GU. “She doesn’t push me to be anything but myself.”

Through his musical journey, he’s been able to find confidence in the work he puts into every melody and hook that prepped him for the music industry. “I feel like God put me through a developmental stage to where I know that I can’t just drop a song and think [that’s it],” he said.

Warren realizes now that it takes more, and with the work, a proper roll-out, and his fans’ massive support, anything is possible. “I challenged myself to be a better father, person and artist,” he said. Now he’s ready to be bigger and better.

Spend management startup Ramp has acquired AI-powered procurement startup Venue, the companies announced today.

Founded in 2022 by TK Kong, Young Kim, and Kevin Chan, Venue’s aim was to “simplify how businesses review, approve, and manage the cost of vendors in use across their company.”

The startup raised $1.2 million in funding from investors such as Sequoia Capital, Exponent Founders Capital and Basecase Capital.

The acquisition makes sense considering that last summer, Ramp announced that it was entering the procurement space as it focused more on “complex” enterprises. Plus, it believes that back-end business processes like procurement are “ripe for practical automation and AI implementations.”

Today, Ramp claims to power over $10 billion in accounts payable spend each year, a 10x increase in just over two years), execs say. Its self-proclaimed goal is to become “a one-stop-shop for all financial operations.”

“Eliminating the inefficiencies across the entire financial tech stack is a prime use case for AI to handle the busy work of work,” the company said. “The product updates announced today go to show how AI and automation will upend back-end business processes and make it easier and more frictionless to operate and work at a modern business. ”

Last year, Ramp acquired Cohere.io, a startup that built an AI-powered customer support tool.

And in August of 2021, Ramp also purchased Buyer, a “negotiation-as-a-service” platform that claimed to save its clients money on big-ticket purchases such as annual software contracts.

Fic: don’t wanna lose me, don’t wanna lose you

Carlos drives TK home after their date.

A missing moment from 1x03.

They’re both quiet in the car on the way back to TK’s place, letting the music on the radio fill the otherwise silent space between them.

Carlos isn’t really sure what to think. He had been nervous to ask TK out again after the failed dinner at his place, but something about the way the firefighter smiled at him as he left the police station made Carlos want to try again. Their conversation at his desk spoke volumes, with Carlos realizing that TK’s intense reaction hadn’t really been about him at all, but more about his past. TK seemed to be fighting his own demons and instead of scaring Carlos away, it just made him want to suit up and fight by his side.

His mom always said his big, selfless heart was going to destroy him one day. Now, Carlos wonders how she could’ve possibly anticipated TK Strand; he certainly didn’t.

He’d planned a casual date, not wanting to overwhelm TK again. The bar felt public and open enough to keep the other man from feeling cornered, and Carlos knew there would be familiar faces around in case TK needed to escape again.

(Not that he had actually planned for that to happen, but he really had no idea what to expect.)

What he had not anticipated was some kind of work-related falling-out between TK and Judd. The presence of the older man had set TK off the minute they walked in the bar, his body growing tense and guarded as a heated anger seemed to boil right underneath his skin. Carlos had initially been curious to find out what was going on, but after a full 30 minutes of TK only ranting about Judd, his patience had started to wane.

He finally got through to TK, and the rest of their date had been fine. TK was tragically terrible at darts, but his natural competitiveness led them to playing for a full hour. After his sixth loss, TK had begrudgingly admitted defeat, a scowl clouding his beautiful features.

Through it all, they talked. Nothing too deep, just the basic getting-to-know-you stuff: why they picked their jobs, how they felt about their families, and of course, how they discovered they were gay. As he drives, Carlos fondly remembers the ten-minute argument over the best sitcom in history - TK had argued for The Office, while he chose the classic I Love Lucy. The conversation had ended in a draw, through Carlos fully intended to revisit it in the future.

Now, turning onto TK’s street, Carlos wonders if they’ll ever get the chance to argue about TV shows again. It’s not that the quiet between them is awkward - in fact, if not for the fact that the date was kind of all over the place, it would be kind of comfortable. There’s a familiarity to sharing space with TK, like it’s just what he’s meant to do. Except, the date was all over the place, and now Carlos doesn’t know what to make of TK’s silence.

He pulls into the driveway, putting the car in park and switching off the ignition. The music keeps playing, content to continue until one of them opens the door. Carlos briefly glances to his right, watching as TK stares up at the house he shares with his dad. His face is in profile, his sharp features thrown into stunning relief. The firefighter pulls his bottom lip between his teeth, clearly lost in his thoughts, and Carlos wants nothing more than to run his finger along the line of TK’s mouth, to remove the obvious stress that weighs on the other man.

Instead, he folds his hands in his lap, twiddling his thumbs as his heart begins to race. He has no idea what happens next, but he knows it’s TK’s choice to make.

“I had a really good time tonight,” TK says softly a few minutes later, finally breaking the silence. The sentiment is so unexpected and so at odds with the current atmosphere inside the car, that Carlos can’t help but let out a huff of laughter, shaking his head. “What?” TK asks, and Carlos turns to find him wearing a confused expression.

“You don’t have to lie, TK,” Carlos says, leaning back against the headrest as he stares over at the other man. “I’d much rather you just be honest with me.”

“I am being honest,” TK says, his voice firm.

Carlos stares at him for a moment, captivated by the way his blue-green eyes shine in the semi-darkness. “Okay,” he says, giving him a nod.

TK huffs out a breath, his hand coming up to rub at his forehead. Then, seemingly coming to a decision, he looks back towards Carlos, his face set. “Walk me up?” he asks.

Instead of answering, Carlos pulls his keys from the ignition, reaching for the door. The music cuts out as he climbs from the car, circling around to join TK on the passenger side. He’s surprised when the other man leans into his side, wrapping his fingers around Carlos’s bicep as they begin to make their way up the front path.

“I’m sorry,” TK begins, as they climb the few steps up to the porch, “for kind of being all over the place tonight.”

“You don’t have to apologize, TK,” Carlos assures him, stopping in front of the door and turning to face him. “I said I wanted to get to know you, and that means all of you. Even your work drama.”

“Do you really think Judd was right?” TK asks him for the second time this evening, though less aggressive than the first. Carlos stares at him, wondering how to handle the question. “Be honest with me,” TK says, repeating his words from earlier.

“I think,” Carlos starts, choosing his words carefully, “that you and Judd can learn a lot from one another. You’ve both had very different lives, had very different experiences on the job, and you’ve both learned a lot from them. I think if the two of you found a way to be on the same side, you’d be pretty unstoppable together. But,” he continues, a smirk pulling at his lips as he brings a hand up to rest against TK’s cheek, “you both have to lose the hard heads, or you’ll just wind up in a never-ending bullfight.”

He shifts, balling his hand into a fist as he gently knocks it against TK’s skull. TK rolls his eyes as he lets out a laugh, reaching up to grab Carlos’s hand. He lets their joined hands fall between them, linking their fingers together.

“Can I make another observation?” Carlos asks after a moment, his heart pounding in his throat.

TK nods, letting their hands swing gently between them.

“It kind of seems like this move to Texas has been a really big change for you, in a lot of ways,” Carlos says, trying not to sound patronizing. He’s just trying to be realistic about this. “And even without all of the stuff that you left behind in New York, it would be a lot to handle.” He takes a deep breath, working up the nerve to say what they both need to hear. “I’m just not sure I know where I fit into all of that.”

He watches as TK visibly swallows, his eyes moving to look everywhere but directly at Carlos.

“I’m not trying to make a decision for you,” Carlos assures him. “I’m just saying…” he hesitates, trying not to be pushy. TK tightens his grip on Carlos’s hand, a reassuring action. “I guess I’m just saying that there’s no pressure here, with you and me,” he finishes, unsure if he’s made his point clearly.

TK takes a step closer, bringing his free hand up to cup Carlos’s cheek. “I think you’re right,” TK says, his voice gentle between them. “As much as I wish it wasn’t true, my life is… a mess right now. You don’t deserve to have to deal with that.”

“That’s not what I’m saying, TK,” Carlos states defensively, bringing his own hand up to cover TK’s, keeping him close. “I’m not running away from you, that’s not who I am. I would just hate to be someone who adds to the stress when I think we’re both mature enough to avoid it. Does that make sense?”

“It does make sense, even if it sucks,” TK agrees, his eyes somehow growing softer. “I meant it when I said I had a good time tonight. You really do help to pull me out of head, and I need that sometimes.”

Carlos nods. “That doesn’t have to change,” he reminds him. “You have my number, whenever you need it. I’m not running away, TK, and I’ll be here.”

“That sounds a bit like a friendship, Reyes,” TK hedges, stroking his thumb against Carlos’s cheek; he feels his skin heat up under TK’s touch.

“It can be, if that’s what you want,” Carlos assures him, turning his head to press a kiss to TK’s palm before dropping their hands between them. “You should know, though, that if we’re going to do this, you have to watch I Love Lucy reruns with me. I have friendship standards, Strand, and that’s a non-negotiable requirement,” he jokes.

TK ducks his head, laughing as he steps back, letting their hands finally disconnect. They stand before one another, two men separated by a harsh wall of reality and bad-timing.

“I like the sound of that,” TK whispers, a smile softening the resignation in his voice.

They stare at one another for a moment, letting their decision envelop them. A part of Carlos aches to reach out and touch TK; he knows that, after tonight, he might not get the chance to hold him again. But, a larger part of him knows that they’ve made the right choice, so he can’t regret it. This is for the best.

“I should go,” he finally says, digging his hands into his pockets to keep them away from TK. He turns, stepping off the porch and onto the front path.

“Good night, Carlos,” TK says, his voice carrying easily through the still night air. Carlos pauses, turning back to give him a wave.

“Good night, TK,” he says back, a forced smile on his lips.

It’ll get easier, he thinks, as he turns to keep walking.

He knows it will.

TK was only now starting to feel the full extent of the oppressive Texas heat that songs and legends talked about. The constant sunshine, with the sticky weighted feeling of humidity was jarringly different from New York. Even the novelty of being able to drive everywhere was starting to fade in the face of constant air conditioner use. Showers had stopped holding any meaning for him.

He resigned himself to the sticky humid feeling as he made his way to Carlos’ place. Night time hadn’t done a whole lot to relieve the oppressive heat and humidity in the air, but at least the sun wasn’t a factor anymore. He parked on the street outside Carlos’ house, taking care to breathe out the irritation of the day before going inside.

He was trying to be open to this, this new thing they were doing. They would meet up for meals, or join the team for drinks after shifts, but TK couldn’t let himself take that next step and make those outings into actual dates. He wasn’t ready to call it dating, but Carlos’ company, his confidence, his smile made his wounds fade back for a while. So he told himself to try a little bit harder, and tonight he was going to Carlos’ place for dinner. Just a meal, he repeated in his head, you are capable of having a meal with him.

He strolled up to the door but stopped by the trash cans outside. He was sure he heard something. Checking around the recycle bins showed him the something. The something turned out to be a kitten - small, and completely filthy, and very very scared, stuck under the bin tied in a plastic bag. He immediately tore open the bag and picked it up and held it close, the tiny distressed cries melting his heart immediately. The kitten mewled pathetically and curled up in his arms, shivering despite the heat. TK ran to the door, knowing he had to get the kitten warm and fed immediately, Carlos would just have to understand about dinner.

By the time Carlos came home, the place was semi-trashed and screams were reverberating around the kitchen, that sounded like a murder livestream. The kitchen had paper towels thrown around, there was mud tracking everywhere, and there in the middle of it all was TK, hunched over the sink. Carlos walked up behind him slowly, and eyed the sink with suspicion, not sure why it was full of gray water, and why there was what looked like a small kitten in the water.

“Um,” he hedged, “what is going on, TK?”

TK turned around to stare at him. “I promise I didn’t mean to make a mess of your place. I found this kitten outside, and it was filthy and shivering and I couldn’t just leave it outside, and you weren’t here and I didn’t know what to do and -”

Carlos put an arm around his shoulders. “TK, take a breath. It’s fine, you’re fine.” He waited as TK stopped talking and breathed. “Now tell me why you’re torturing the poor little kitten.”

“It doesn’t like me! I swear cleaning it might as well be murder,” TK complained, flailing his hands slightly and sloshing water on the floor. Carlos had to hold his face and push him back a little, moving over to the sink.

“Watch and learn now, city boy. This is how you clean a kitten,” he said, grabbing a new kitchen cloth to wet and started moving it in small circles. The kitten instantly stopped its howling, and sat calmly through the rest of the bath. TK had no idea how Carlos did it, but he wasn’t surprised to find that Carlos had a calming effect on any living thing. After all, isn’t that why TK kept coming back to him?

Finally, after all the commotion, and a few scratches for both of them, the kitten was finally happy, purring like an engine and wrapped up in the softest towel Carlos could find. Its soft tan coloring now fully clean of dirt and trash, the kitten was securely held in Carlos’ massive arms, and TK couldn’t stop the warm stuttering feeling in his chest. TK stared at the picture they made, and Carlos’ soft smile, and his own smile couldn’t stay away from his face any longer. His heart couldn’t stop thudding in his chest.

“Her name is Daisy,” he blurted, turning and dashing to the kitchen to clean up. He didn’t see as much as hear Carlos come up next to him, slight confusion in his beautiful brown eyes. He needed to get a grip on himself.

“What, did she tell you this psychically?” Carlos asked.

“No,” he responded, head down, scrubbing at the sink. After a second he looked up and sighed. “I named her, and that’s her name now.”

Carlos’s expression cleared. “Daisy,” he looked down at the kitten, “how does that sound sweetheart? You like being a Daisy? I think you’re sure pretty like one.”

TK beamed, the sweetheart ringing faintly in his ears. “I’ll finish up here and you get Miss Daisy settled first then we can get dinner?”

Dinner consisted of food for them, and a tiny bowl of kitten formula that Carlos found in the back of his car. Once that cleanup was done they both collapsed on the living room couch, Daisy now wrapped in a blanket and snoozing between them. TK sunk back with an exhausted sigh, work and kitten rescue with cleanup duty had left him completely wrung out. Next to him Carlos was sort of boneless, stretched out and stroking Daisy’s back softly. It was all so nice and domestic in a way that TK hadn’t been used to at all, and it brought up a bittersweet ache under his ribs for the way life could have been, back when he had dreamed of it. The wound was open and gaping still, and would stay for a while, but right then it was more of a gentle ache, a hazy memory.

But then Carlos looked up and smiled at him, in a half-sleepy contented way, and TK was almost okay that this is where he ended up, even though the journey was too rough at times, and the destination was still too far.

“So I guess you have a cat now,” Carlos said softly. He was looking down at Daisy, but TK still felt the weight of his gaze.

“You can share custody if you’d like,” he responded. “Mondays and Wednesdays, alternative weekends?” He almost laughed thinking about his dad’s reaction to bringing home a kitten, but he already knew it would be a fight to take the kitten away from here.

Carlos chuckled. “Or she could stay here, and you could help out.”

TK thought about it. The moment hung between them.

“Can’t let you take all the credit,” TK finally said.

Carlos’ smile was answer enough.
