#self diagnosis is bullshit

Hot Take:
There is a difference between mentioning that you might be autistic/etc and to please be patient and going all "I'M AUTISTIC (self-diagnosed!!!1)".
Doing research on a condition you think you might have and mentioning this is okay (such as, for example, saying "I might be autistic, please be patient with me"). Taking pride in this and treating it as if it's just as valid as a diagnosis, or pretending you know better than a doctor with a PHD (or just saying that self DXing is more valid than being diagnosed by doctors, or that professional diagnoses can actually cause you harm (My dude, do you even know how delusional you sound? Diagnoses exist so you can get help)), or that it's okay to "stop at the first step" and not actually seek the help you need.
I've seen way too many people, especially on Toyhouse and Tumblr, mention their "self-diagnosis" in such narcissistic and completely delusional ways that it just makes my blood boil. and yeah, I understand that some people can't get diagnosed because they're poor, but that's still no excuse to not actively seek help for what you have.

Exclusionists: Self diagnosis isn’t valid because only a doctor can diagnose a mental disorder. It doesn’t matter what traits you have. Only a doctor can do the complex work of sorting out what traits indicate a disorder.
Also exclusionists: All aplatonics and aplspecs have a personality disorder. All of them. No, I’m not a doctor, but I’m still qualified to say that about them. Personality disorders are just lacking friends and nothing else, right?

god it's so uncomfortable how people treat you when you let them know you're nonverbal/semiverbal. i had my roomie call my professor with me and kinda be my voice and they said i was struggling to speak (i was only able to get out a weak "h-h-h- i" to prove it was me and it was so painful) they said "oh my god im so sorry" and it was so uncomfortable. they treated it like "oh you poor thing :(" even after we said it was fine and it happens and it was so weird and seemed like they thought it was horrific? i hate the pity reaction so much.
i haven't been able to speak for a few weeks and it's perfectly chill. i don't mind it at all and i just use my aac if i need/want to say something. if anything it's just mildly inconvenient? because i can't answer phone calls without help and i get weird looks from the grocery store employees but that's... about it?
please stop treating disabled people like it's a tragedy that they're different. i just need patience and understanding, not pity and apologizes. i do not think it's sad that i struggle to speak or am slow. yeah, it's tough to be in a world not made for you, but that doesn't mean it's awful. im proud of who i am and don't want pity for being myself.

one day i’ll make an in depth post about how i went to get a professional autism diagnosis and the lady gave me a whole battery of irrelevant tests and only ONE autism related test (the AQ) which i scored a 39 on, and then proceeded to write in the report “her overall score on this instrument was below the significant range.”
UMMMM

anti self diagnosis discourse (abt mental illnesses, idk physical stuff) still blows my mind, esp coming from ppl who live in countries where you can't get psychiatric medicines without prescription, bc like i genuinely do not see the harm in it at all. ig there's the whole pathologizing aspect i see ppl talk about but like that can (and often does) happen if you have an official diagnosis as well so does it really count. teens diagnosing themselves with serious mental illnesses 1 aren't always wrong 2 if they /are/ wrong, they often do this bc they have some other serious problem that's worth looking into anyway (except it's often brushed off as "everyone has anxiety" and stuff like that, which is why they lean into the less common disorders in the first place), but using a label of some personality disorder isn't gonna negate that somehow if they have someone looking out for them. even adults who self-dx, like, likely do it bc they have no way to get an official diagnosis, and again it's not like latching onto a label for now particularly harms them (if it does, the problem is not the label itself. like if they do bad shit to others, then instead of excusing it with "i do that bc i have x disorder" they'll just say "i do that bc that's who i am/that's how i was born" or shit like that, lbr. what I'm saying is the issue isn't the seld-dxing here but the behavior itself that could exist even without it/with an official diagnosis just the same)
and yeah i mean all this even if the person in question DOES have the means to get an official diagnosis, bc that shit is still difficult and scary, and if you're a woman or a person of color or lgbt (esp trans) or even just fat you're already gonna have a hard time getting one (or getting an *accurate* one, at least) anyway bc medical officials and esp psychiatric ones seem to dismiss or mishandle those groups in particular
like. from my own personal experience here. getting an official diagnosis that later ended up being wrong hurt me way more in the long run than self diagnosing with something and being wrong ever could (also, i self-dxed and ended up being right, too, so like maybe we can trust people to know what they're talking about when it comes to their own psyche and consider that maybe they can do their research about mental illness just fine)

People will present the fact that autistic people tend to assume everyone is probably good and have good intentions as evidence of the fact that autistic people are unrealistic and out of touch with reality :/

petition for people to stop talking to me about their self-diagnosing with random shit based on stereotypes and the pathologization of normal behaviors that's being spread around on ticktocks as if I'll care or support them in any way whatsoever

i hate that an autism diagnosis is hidden behind a paywall that i couldn’t possibly afford. i hate how nobody takes me seriously, i hate how i know that nobody will take me seriously regardless of a diagnosis or not bc that’s what ppl do with autistic ppl.
I hate that i do not have sufficient supports, i hate having nobody that understands what’s going on with my brain, i hate that i have to be in survival mode 24/7, i hate how since i’ve been high masking and traumatized my whole life everyone around me ignored my autism and think i can just keep going indefinitely. i hate how tired i am i hate how the moment i feel even a second of autistic joy the fear of neurotypical expectations immediately crushes it

I've fallen down the rabbit hole of self-diagnostic autism screening tests, and they're all saying pretty much the same thing, so why am I taking more of them?

english is stupid i am talking about separate interactions of 4 different people in one sentence and it’s so long and i have so many ‘that’s in it and i do not know how to change it to make it sound less stupid. because right now it sounds like a gossipy teen girl in a comedy movie. probably i have to break it into two sentences or fit a semicolon in there but i’m not sure how to do it well
also i’m about to hit the fucking “what if richey was autistic and we’re supporting our claim with quotes from a pseudoscientist in a daily mail article” nonsense section of this stupid fucking book
