Claudia blinked in surprise—she didn’t realize she’d been followed from the campsite—and the creature blinked back. She tilted her head, and sure enough, the homunculus did the same.

Something flickered behind its lamplike eyes—like someone passing in front of a flame—and Claudia realized that the air in her lungs was growing stale.

Burbling happily, it offered her the mess like it was the prize of its many labors. Worms dangled helplessly in the air, many broken apart by the being’s sudden movement, their blunt ends wriggling in confusion.

She uncorked her flask and plunged it into the pond. Bubbles sprouted from the lip, like someone drowning.

Her hands itched with the horrible lightness of each scattered piece, her feet ached as she walked and walked and walked to gather her father back together… And then the voice, the thread she had caught and clung to and used to haul herself out of the darkness.

It’s also a perfect parallel to their own dynamics with their respective boyfriends. Terry is right there, actively supporting Claudia, but she can’t seem to fully trust that she can rely on him (just as Rayla feels she can’t fully rely on Callum - without getting him killed, perhaps) because they’e both too wrapped up in their tunnel vision of “I’m the one who has to sacrifice to keep other people together/safe” even when it’s detrimental to them and untrue. 

“So is that it?” she asked. “Aaravos left me too, huh? Like dad and Soren, and my mo—”

Lissa had left her years ago, but the space she had owned in Claudia’s heart remained. It was a dark place now, hard and hateful, its edges raw as a wound that had forgotten to heal.

A FESTERING WOUND / dark and light symbolism again as well as a parallel to Aaravos’ (missing) chest piece and according Key to his Heart theory

Surprised, Claudia looked up to see the homunculus. Its wings caught the sun, bathing it in a soft halo of lavender light. Its eyes glowed gold and luminous, almost warm, almost… patient.

A moment later, she blinked into the pond; her reflection beamed up at her. Her eyes brighter, her face fuller, more color in her cheeks. Small changes, but still—There I am, she thought.

Not only is this a smaller version of Viren’s butterfly spell to hide his physical dark magic corruption (and seemingly rejuvenate himself too) and it shows Claudia going down that path, but it’s also a parallel to 3x03:

But instead of being brought into the fold by someone else (and therefore supported through clarity rather than guise), Claudia is alone, because of course she is. 

“Let’s go,” Claudia told the creature. “I can fix this. I can fix anything.”

Her brother squirmed. “Clauds, Biscuit’s—” “—I know. But I fixed it. Now we can still play with her.” (Rise Again, S4′s Claudia short story)

She reached for its hand—and flinched. The remains of the second snail coated the homunculus’s palm, a stain of crushed flesh flecked with colorful shards of shell. The being seemed unperturbed. It gazed up at her, eyes bright and luminous. Like a helpless thing, Claudia thought. Like a child.

Re: Sir Sparklepuff being compared to both Claudia and a child, thus tethering Claudia to that same childlike comparison makes me find it especially interesting that seconds before this, Claudia reaffirms her sense of herself that she’s uniquely Strong vs her father’s “If we are led by a child king--” “He’ll make bad choices?” “He will make weak choices” as well as the juxtaposition of This, always:

Jaeger Piloting 101: How Rangers Get Into The Thing & Other Basic Stuff

Hello Pacific Rim fans, today I am doing a post on the topic of how rangers get into the conn-pod, and take control of the Jaeger, plus do a quick look at conn-pod interiors in general! I'll be using pictures sourced from movie-screencaps.com to illustrate the process.

Before I proceed, I'd like to remind folks that Lady Danger's canonical name contains a racial slur. It will be depicted here in screenshots, but I encourage fans to use the name "Lady Danger" in casual conversation, fanfiction etc. It doesn't matter if the name was referencing an old engine, it doesn't matter if no harm was intended by it; a slur's a slur.

Before the rangers enter the conn-pod, they must first suit up. This isn't something they can do on their own - they have a dedicated team of assistant techs to help them into their drivesuits. As we can see here, Raleigh and Yancy Becket's team have the name of their jaeger printed on the backs of their jumpsuits:

If you read my earlier post on jaegers, you know that drivesuits come in two layers. Here's Raleigh and Yancy already wearing the first layer, while one of their technicians assists:

Next, the technicians help them into the drivesuit's second, armored layer. On the right side of the first image is the area where the drivesuits are kept when not in use:

And then we have this thing that's pulled out of a special storage box and put over the spinal area, connecting the back of the armor together:

We also see Yancy and Raleigh pull on their helmets, and this strange liquid drains out. (It makes me think of the orange juice Raleigh was drinking earlier.) It's not clear how common this feature is, but we know it's not universal - the refurbished Lady Danger doesn't have this, and Cherno Alpha's helmets don't look it would even be possible.

Next up, the pilots enter the conn-pod. Note those two light gray things on the floor in the first picture; that's part of the Pilot Motion Rig. Also note the dark gray things hanging from the ceiling in the second picture; that's also part of it.

Once the pilots step into the bottom part of Pilot Motion Rig, metal clamps lock their feet into place. On the right, Raleigh is already locked in; on the left, Yancy is not yet locked in:

Meanwhile, more technicians help pilots get into the upper part of the Pilot Motion Rig.

At this point, something magical and wonderful absolutely terrifying else happens: the floor pulls away, leaving the pilots standing like:

If you look down once the floor's pulled back, it's uh. Quite the view.

In the case of Lady Danger, a nuclear-powered Mark-3, this is where technicians drop the head to connect it to the body. (The head is stored separately to reduce radiation exposure that might damage the delicate circuits.)

At this point, the Beckets are looking at this in front of them:

As the head connects, the pilot-to-pilot protocol is engaged, the computer system fires up, and the Beckets see a LOADING screen:

In the Anchorage Shatterdome, Lady Danger was wheeled out through a door on a rolling platform. At this point, the neural handshake was activated with a countdown of fifteen seconds.

The neural link is established, and you got two people in control of a Jaeger!

From here, stuff often depends on the specific jaeger, as control systems can be pretty different. For example, we see Raleigh and Yancy holding these round things in the arms they're controlling at the beginning of the film, but the refurbished Lady Danger doesn't seem to use them, and neither do the other jaegers.

I'd also like to contrast Cherno Alpha's drivesuits with Lady Danger's drivesuits for a moment, just to emphasize how different designs can be. As you can see, each pilot's drivesuit has cables connected to the arm they're controlling:

Also as I was looking at pictures of jaeger interiors, I noticed something curious about Lady Danger vs. Striker Eureka.

The original Lady Danger has a high console like this:

The refurbished Lady Danger has one positioned lower:

Striker Eureka has both a high and low console:

So make of that what you will, lol.

2x01: Viren takes something that does not belong to him (the king’s seal) as he is ‘just a servant’ and not a king. Callum is unable to take something that does not belong to him (ability to do magic) on account of being ‘only human.’ Viren needs access to the status of king to have greater power; Callum needs a primal stone in order to do magic.

2x02: Viren tries to unearth the secrets of the mirror, resulting in a breakdown cloaked in darkness. Callum tries to mediate between his friends, who are all keeping secrets, resulting in a breakdown as he steps out of the darkness of the half moon and into the light. He has finally learned the truth about Harrow, and Viren has his first bit of contact with Aaravos.

2x03: Callum deals with the fallout of Harrow’s death, as well as ultimately trusting Rayla over Soren and Claudia, who betray him. Viren makes his first real bit of contact with Aaravos.

2x04: This is perhaps one of the three most overt episodes to parallel them. Callum goes out into the storm in hopes of connecting to the Sky arcanum, but has too much self preservation (thankfully) to electrocute himself. Likewise, although Viren begins communicating with Aaravos, he has too many reservations to do the blood oath spell by cutting his hand. Both mages reject the mores self destructive pursuit of power - for Viren, he still hopes political machinations can work, and for Callum, primal magic in another way.

2x05 - 2x06: Depending on where the story goes, these episodes could retroactively have a lot of parallels (the heart of the magma titan was a good thing and a bad thing, resulting in the loss of loved ones; the key of Aaravos, also revealed in tandem, could have a similar good-bad dichotomy with it). However, these episodes do thematically set up Viren and Callum as opposites, for a Narrative of Strength and a Narrative of Love respectively.

2x07: Faced with a lack of options and desperation to save what they want to protect, Viren makes the blood pact with Aaravos by cutting his hand, and Callum does dark magic in order to save Rayla, thus completing their initial refusal of darkness/danger in 2x04 in the same episode by going through with it anyway. 

2x08: Viren converses with the mysterious elf in the mirror, while Callum faces a mirror image of himself. Viren falls in deeper in spite of Aaravos’ lack of answers, while Callum rejects dark magic but can’t shake the threat of drowning. 

2x09: Callum is brought to his knees due to love and sickness, while Viren kneels before death and Aaravos’ machinations. Both are given very different perspectives of love (“I love you with all of myself, and I always will” / “Those who fail tests of love are simple animals. They deserve to be motivated by fear” / “Search your heart” + “You must know it with your head, hand, and heart”) as well postulations of meaning ( “I can’t lose you like this, you mean too much to me” / “This mirror meant something to [Avizandum]. You meant something to him” “Perhaps”). Their arc long search for greater magical purpose is concluded with Callum finding magic within himself, and ultimately freedom, while Viren’s external manifestation of it (Aaraworm) goes into his body, and he is forced into chains.

the more i rewatch the scene with sora and kairi exchanging paopu fruit in kh3, the more im baffled by how many fans cite it as the ultimate proof s/k is now canon

and then looks confused/concerned when kairi suggests the idea

its only after kairi clarifies that she just wants to be a part of his life ‘no matter what’ that he agrees

no matter what? what is the ‘no matter what’? if he finds someone else? 

to me it reads more like her wanting them to have some kind of relationship, regardless of the choices sora makes in the future. even if that relationship isnt romantic

her adding on ‘that’s all’ further indicates she notices soras concern, and wants him to know what she really meant by exchanging the fruits. which is that she just wanted them to remain in each others lives.

and of couse, the original japanese dialogue for this scene is even more blatantly platonic:

“This charm is to keep us from getting separated again.”

(its also been stated they recorded two versions of the scene: one where they exchange the fruit, and one where they dont. and didnt tell the VAs which they were gonna use. which seems weird if its suppose to be a pivotal scene IRT a s/k romance?)

like??? as a whole the scene feels not like the beginning of a sora and kairi romance, but as a cap on their relationship and wrapping it up, so to speak.

theyve finally recreated their childhood cave drawing, and now they can move on from it. its like. idk. a bookend. not a new start.

if anything, it almost feels like a red herring, to draw you away from the idea of soriku endgame

and of course, theres the fact they didnt share just one, like in the legend that has been stated multiple times:

note the use of ‘one’, ‘it’, and ‘a paopu’

plus, the combined keyblade?

it doesnt have the paopu charm until they combine the two halves

Claudia's depression era print dresses

During the great depression, cost-cutting manufacturers simplified designs but used colorful prints usually on a functional but inexpensive fabric such as cotton or muslin, which also allowed for increased practicality and durability as women took on increasing workload during the economic hardship. Claudia is seen wearing various types of print in the mid to late 30's that were popular for everyday wear. By this time, Claudia considers herself an adult and is wearing fully adult silhouettes and hemlines although the costumes emphasize her petite frame. Even though fashion in the 1930s went back to a more traditional waistline compared to the previous decade, the choice to put her in loose dresses rather than the more feminine formfitting silhouette of the day highlights her body's lack of maturity.

In the scene before she decides to leave home again she is once again in a dress reminiscent of her childhood sailor dress with a schoolgirl-esque collar and bow, showing us that even if she is an adult woman now and has taken on the responsibilities of one, she is still Louis's little girl in her heart.
