Weekly COVID-19 Update for 2023-12-24
COVID is still airborne, and COVID still very much isn't over.
Northeastern and Midwestern USA SARS2 virus levels in wastewater are *soaring*, Northeast is currently at 1500 copies/mL (~750 copies indicates a strong surge), and Midwest is at 1300 copies/mL. Southeastern and Western USA are maintaining relatively lower levels between 600 and 700 overall, but both are still climbing. See https://biobot.io/data for county-specific data as results can vary widely between locales.
Tumblr media
How to reduce your risk of infection? The SARS2 virus is airborne and can spread like smoke, so #MaskUp with an #N95 or better, avoid superspreader events and locations, and stay up-to-date on your boosters. Do it for yourself, so you don't catch SARS-CoV-2, and for others, so you don't spread SARS-CoV-2. Even if you're fully vaccinated, your risk of developing #LongCOVID following an infection is lower but not zero, and multiple reinfections increase your odds of negative health outcomes. Plan A always should be to prevent an infection from developing by wearing a respirator with a good seal around your mouth and nose (FFP2, FFP3, KN95, N95, N99, P100, etc.).
Holiday tips:
-If someone tells you that COVID is over, you might ask them why, if we didn't consider COVID to be over in 2020 or 2021, when the COVID wastewater levels were lower, why should we consider it over now, when the virus is circulating in even higher amounts?
-"Fewer cases" doesn't mean much when most of the at-home rapid tests don't get counted in official records, and the most accurate PCR tests are neither freely available nor given to everyone getting on a plane or attending classes.
-"Fewer deaths" also means less when you remember that about 1,200,000 of the most vulnerable people already have died from it, COVID-19 remains the #3 cause of death in 2023 (behind heart disease and cancer, the risk of both of which may be increased by COVID), and the risk of a Long COVID/post-acute COVID syndrome (PACS) disability or other potentially life-shortening organ damage (brain, kidney, lung, immune, etc.) isn't measured just by the death count. Also, the USA's life expectancy still hasn't recovered from the drop it experienced following the start of the pandemic.

Did anyone else notice
The COVID19 tag was trending on here yesterday? 👀
It's like the pandemic still exists or something. Color me shocked.
Hopefully this means people are catching on. This breaking period has been a long and exhausting one.

Am I sad I never knew how good and simple and safe life was back before 2020? Yes.
Am I mad that I took it for granted? No, because someone with hope could never imagine a world like this.

the scariest thing to me that most people don't even realize is that the acute phase is not the disease. that's becoming conspicuously evident the longer this all goes on. but sure let's go partying every week because YOLO

(Vocal rhythm, C min, Bflat major, Aflat major Cmin)
Distancing does not end
Oh no it does not end,
Distancing does not end for me
But my heart it still beats
My heart it still loves
And my heart it still longs to be free
Fmin G Aflatmajor, Bflatmajor, Fmin G Aflatmajor, Bflatmajor
The everyday products that most people wear
Impact the safety of air that we share
If someone’s got perfume, hairspray or Tide
I get trouble breathing, get sick, have to hide
Distancing does not end, oh no it does not end, distancing does not end for me
But my heart it still beats, my heart it still loves, and my heart it still longs to be free
I’m not sick of Zoom ‘cause it keeps me connected
And through this screen, I’ve got so much to give
Joining remotely keeps me protected
I’ve just got one body and I’m gonna live
Distancing does not end, oh no it does not end, distancing does not end for me
But my heart it still beats, my heart it still loves, and my heart it still longs to be free
Her oncologist told her, “when you get the vaccine
act like you didn’t, keep isolating”
‘Cause with Myeloma, you’re immune-compromised”
I feel her love when I look in her eyes
Distancing does not end, oh no it does not end, distancing does not end for me
But my heart it still beats, my heart it still loves, and my heart it still longs to be free
Isolating together, and staying connected
We are still here, we’ve got so much to give
Working remotely keeps us protected
These are our lives, and we’re still gonna live
Distancing does not end, oh no it does not end, distancing does not end for me
But my heart it still beats, my heart it still loves, and my heart it still longs to be free (my heart is free)

fauci saying “vulnerable people will fall by the wayside” and that some will die but that’s ok because we’re not going to see the “tsunami of cases” we’ve seen before is so dehumanising. so babies with no immune system, elderly people, disabled people, and people without adequate access to healthcare can all die of covid. but it’s ok guys because actually they’re just falling to the wayside and everyone else will go back to normal and be fine (sarcasm).
my death or the deaths of my family or friends wouldn’t be us “falling by the wayside”, it would be us being failed by our government, healthcare systems, and communities who have refused to take coronavirus seriously despite mounting anecdotal and scientific evidence of the harm this virus does. fact that people can accept the deaths of vulnerable groups just because they want to eat in a restaurant or don’t want to wear a mask is horrifying

Great video about speaking in several different elastomeric respirators. Useful for if you are looking at cheaper, easier, more sustainable long term solutions to disposable masks.

[image id: two screenshots of four tweets by user lisa_iannattone on Twitter, posted on 19 December 2022 at 1:14 p.m., reading sequentially: "It's absolutely wild to me that we're pretending that the higher than average number of respiratory tract infections and the pandemic of adults with pneumonia this year is not a warning sign of immune impairment. This is literally how immunodeficiency would present. In clinical practice, we we want to screen for the possibility of an undiagnosed underlying immunodeficiency syndrome, "how many respiratory infections do you get in an average year?" and "have you had pneumonia more than once?" are the 2 first questions we ask. There's been more pneumonias among my healthy adult friends & acquaintances in the last 6 months than among my immunosuppressed patients in the last 6 years. Something is clearly off. And healthy adults with pneumonia is not a viral transmission dynamics issue. This thread blew up and some people aren't sure if I'm suggesting immunity debt. Definitely not. Staying healthy doesn't make you sick, pathogens do. As for the immunity "gap", it's likely a contributing factor but doesn't explain adults with pneumonia. It's SARS2 I'm worried about.
end image id]
hey, the pandemic is not over. wear a mask.
in case this is unclear, immunocompromised, immunosuppressed, and other disabled people are not getting sick the same way as healthy adults because they are masking the fuck up and/or still largely being forced to isolate, while many many “healthy” adults are not. just because you are healthy doesn’t mean you are immune to long-term effects from covid. anyone can become disabled at any time. immunity debt is not real.
do your part to protect yourself and others. not wearing a mask is worse than ableism. It’s disablist.
Please at least wear masks in public indoor, and crowded outdoor spaces. Make public spaces safe and accessible for everyone.

what endemic DOES mean: a pathogen that spreads at a stable rate (where for each infected individual, they pass on the pathogen to about 1 other individual on average)
what endemic DOES NOT mean: a pathogen found every-the-fuck-where, that grows and spreads exponentially. the word you are looking for is "pandemic"

well, the new year is in a bit depending on where the fuck you are.
but what is everyone’s hopes for next year?
mine is much of the same,
“plz no more epidemic of the sars2”
“Plz can we have peace in our lifetime as promised by everyone”
“Plz can the government stop being bad”
“I hope crypto and NFT’s go defunct without people losing their life savings”
And probably shit tons of crying.
this year has been awful!
the next one we haven’t yet seen.
but I wish everyone a happy new year. (Tho Chinese new year isn’t until later, I can’t wait for it!)
let’s hope this one is marginally better!
Yay, 🎉 (:celebration emoji)

Dear John...
How to thank you, John Horgan, on your retirement? (Originally, I wrote this letter to you for your 2022 birthday, but I missed the submission deadline, because I was busy trying to figure out how to keep my kids safe at school during a pandemic… for a third [pandemic] year… I’ve adjusted it a little, but much of it still stands, so here you go.) Thank you for letting thousands of people die…

Red Blood cells do not have ACE2 receptors, but SARS-CoV-2 can interact with them via several receptors or auxiliary membrane proteins.
Highlights
"Recent data show that Sars2 infection causes significant damage to the red blood cells, altering their morphology, deformability, and aggregability."
"Loss of red blood cell deformability and/or increased aggregability favors the development of thrombotic processes in the microcirculation, as has been described to occur in COVID-19 patients."
"In addition, many patients also develop systemic endotheliitis associated with generalized coagulopathy through activated platelets."
"This manifests itself clinically as obstructive microthrombi [microclots] in the area of the medium and smallest vessels, which can affect all internal organs."
"Above changes in the red blood cells may contribute to the microangiopathy/microthrombosis associated with COVID-19 and may result in impaired capillary blood flow and tissue oxygenation in different/all Internal organs."
Obstructive microthrombi could be the main culprit of internal organ damages from covid. These sequalae come as a result of complex interactions in the cardiovascular system, descirbed in mostly de-jargoned terms:
1. Loss of red blood cell deformability and/or increased aggregability)
2. Endotheliitis(Inflammation-induced/white blood cells)
3. Activated platelets
