So one of the things I wanted most from the books about Kyoshi and Yangchen is finding new information about the former avatars. The problem is that we didn't really got new information about any avatars besides Szeto. We did got the names of two new avatars, Salai and Gun, but with Salai we don't know anything besides this name. I thought we would find more information about her in the books of Yangchen but they didn't mention again. We doesn't even know if Salai is a boy or girl.
So it's really bothered me so I decided to at least have some direction about Salai. I know many fans think he was the ground avatar before Szeto but I don't think it's make sense. One it's mostly a female name and I know you can give a female name to a boy as well but I do think Salai is a girl and not a boy. Secondly, the name is a hindi origin and the nation with hindi names are the air nomads, so I think because of the name origin Salai is most likely an air nomad avatar. Of course it's just my opintion and besides a name I don't have any information to base on but that's what I think.

Sometimes when I'm researching Salai aka Gian Giacomo Caprotti aka Leonardo da Vinci's apprentice I never shut up about, there's one thing that I think of that really pains me.
That's the fact that in all of the sources we have, nothing is directly from Salai himself. We have some tiny accounts about him written by Leonardo, and we have an inventory of his estate which was done after his death, we have a note which states that he has been paid to Salai for paintings he has delivered to the king of France and some letters mentioning Salai offering his artistic services to Issbella d'Este, but never anything writen by Salai himself.
The only things we have by Salai, are couple of paintings, and even then the attribution is only an academic guess. We have only one painting signed by him.
This man lived for 44 years, of which roughly half was spent besides Leonardo, one of the most famous artists in western art history, yet so very little remains of him. He's been death for exactly 500 years now.
You see one thing that I've been taught about source criticism is to consider who's voice comes through the source, and who's voice perhaps is being silenced, or not heard. Due to the sources we have available, we can never hear Salai's voice, except perhaps through his art. But we will never know his perspective. We only have what his master wrote about him when he was ten years old. Our understanding of who Salai was as a person is filtered through Leonardo, and Salai has no way to defend himself, nor express his side of the story.
It fucks me up kinda.

Jael: Oi! Nat: What are you doing here again? Jael: I love wedding crashing. Meet my plus one. Chris: Why did you bring a plus one?! Jael: Kieran didn't tell you. Ah, here's to Kieran leaving it to me to bring the news. This is Salai, greet them Sal, don't be shy. Salai: -overwhelmed- Jael: He's a little green around the edges.  Salai: Hi... Chris:... hi. Why is he here? Jael: he's your new partner in reaping. Your protegee, student if you will. Come on Salai, meet your new teacher. -pushes Salai-
Chris just shakes his head slightly, typical Jael, and with Kieran still out of the “loop” this did not surprise him.
Salai: -bows- Pleasure to meet you. Chirs: Likewise. -his eyes focus on Jael- My family reaper is for me to train? Jael: Oh.. keen senses in this one! Nat: Well duh, he is third in line after all. Chris: Well you will have to keep an eye on your plus one, I have some wedding things to do. Nat: I’ll keep an eye on both. Salai:... Huh. I don’t think you’re supposed to do that! -fretting- Jael: -trying to steal some of the flower arrangements- Sush, you. I’m working! Nat: Oi! I’m sure if you ask they’ll give you some! And are you really sure this will work.. I mean? I think he’s broken! -points to Salai fretting over the fact some kids are staring at him- Jael: He’s fine! Just overwhelmed. He just last week getting used to the interplanetary travel thing. Poor thing thought we only collected spirits on one planet! And today I just pushed him into a wormhole and showed him a whole new world -singing- Universe. Soo. Cake?

Sooo I don't know if someone already talked about it but...
Have you ever noticed the similarity between Armand and Gian Giacomo Caprotti, aka il Salaì (1), favourite pupil and (almost surely) lover of Leonardo da Vinci?
If not, here some basic infos:
He was born in 1480 near Milan, we know it because we have Leonardo's diary saying that Giacomo joined his bottega in 1490, "when he was ten" (2);
He was nicknamed "Salaì" ("devil") because he was, apparently, quite a pest :)))). He was, in Leonardo's words, "a thief, a liar, stubborn, and gluttonous";
Leonardo was born in 1452, which makes him 38 years old when Giacomo joined his household (yes, the age gap);
Salaì stayed with Leonardo almost till his death and was the model for many some of his paintings and sketches (3), some of which are erotic ones;
In 1523 he married a woman called Bianca Coldirodi d'Annono.
Last but not least, Salaì looked like THIS

This is a portrait made by another (anonymous) pupil of Leonardo.
I MEAN.

He was the model for the painting Saint John the Baptist by Leonardo (on the internet, you can easily find the NSFW sketch for this painting so... yeah).
So if we look at Armand's backstory (at least, the one set in Venice with Marius), I think it's pretty easy to see the similarities:
Armand states in The Vampire Armand that he was born around 1480-81;
He was (and continue to be) a pest *affectionate*
He has a relationship with Bianca;
Marius is very Leonardo-coded for many reasons (age-gap aside, I'm really talking about his personality and attitude);
I don't think I have to comment on the features of Salaì, do I?
In conclusion, I don't think any of it is random. Anne was a fan of Reinassance Italy, I'm pretty sure she did read something about Salai and Leonardo and decided to use it in her books.
Notes
Shortcut for "Sala[d]ino" which means "Saladin" but was used at the time to say "devil" because... well, period typical islamophobia. But you have to admit, the fact that his nickname was Devil, is something.
The Italian Wiki also gives a birth date: 27th December but I don't know the source (however, this is really funny to me because I've always headcanoned Armand as a Capricorn).
There is also this theory according to which he was the model for the Mona Lisa, since, yes, Salaì did actually modelled for paintings of women.

The Caprotti Caprotti is good...but I don't like how it says Salaì wasn't a painter....when there are works signed by him and known that he has two notable works. You could say he was more of a model and a muse...but to say he wanted a painter when many things say that Leonardo took in Salaì because he saw him drawing and saw potential in him??
Salaì may not have been great or maybe it was all lost or destroyed, but I wouldn't say he wanted a painter
