Shadow and Bone Season 2: Episodes 5 & 6 Review!✨
Wesper is carrying the show, they changed a twist, took a scene from fanfiction, and forgot a really important line! We have one question: What's all this then!?
What did you think of these two episodes of the second season!?

On the Topic of Christina Strain & SaB
So while browsing the hellscape that is Twitter today, the first thing you see in the Shadow & Bone Fandom, is this exchange between Christina Strain (a producer/writer on the show) and a fan.
Tumblr media
And I didn't think this would be necessary to say, but this is EXTREMELY unprofessional on the part of Christina.
But I do want to take the time to look and explain WHY from the perspective of someone who is a professional creative by job description. Christina, openly, speaks about her time as a writer on Shadow and Bone. Which is well within her right, as a creative, many times the appeal of following is for behind the scenes takes, more insight into writing decisions, and generally furthering the interest in a show / property after it has concluded. Especially if the conclusion was incomplete and/or canceled before the full story was told.
So here we have a situation.
The Question:
So the question Merel (the fan) asked was about the obvious sidelining of Alina Starkov, our main character. It's not an opinion that Alina was sidelined, it's been observed numerous times, most recently in this collider article talking about / reviewing the blatant reduction of character for Alina.
Merel's question, originally was about S3. Specifically, where was Alina, was there ever a plan for her? Originally, Christina just said, there was nothing written for Alina, and she had a vague idea of a separate storyline.
To which, Merel responded with the wide-spread rumor that Six of Crows, had been rejected by Netflix three times. For reasons not relevant — that rumor isn't true. But she also expressed frustration, as since the announcement of the show's cancelation, Christina specifically has given an overwhelming amount of attention and care to Six of Crows, while not seeming to have any real passion for the Shadow and Bone property or it's characters. Christina's response starts out professional. She clarifies, Six of Crows was not rejected (aka the rumor wasn't true) and that she didn't have control over that decision, which is true.
Where Christina stops being professional, is the other half of her response.
The Response
Tumblr media
Here is where so many people take offense, and find issue. Christina, openly shames the Darklina ship. Which isn't inherently bad, no one is forced to like a ship, however. It had NOTHING to do with the question at hand. Just because a fan likes a certain dynamic, of a ship that at one point was canon, and likes to explore that, doesn't mean that they don't know what they're talking about when they're just asking about the future of a character. Merel didn't ask "Oh, how are you going to make this darklina?" She didn't even mention the ship. The only reason Christina even knew about Merel's shipping preference is because she either went on Merel's page or looked at the "Relevant People" column on Twitter for Desktop.
Tumblr media
And now we venture into a much worse territory.
Bullying
Let's take a look at the power dynamic in this exchange.
Christina has 9.58K Followers on Twitter. Merel has 114.
Christina is a producer/writer on the show. Merel is a fan.
Christina has a self-appointed responsibility to promote the petition to bring her show back. Merel is a part of the larger community who supported the show. Christina is 42 years old. Merel is 19.
Instead of, ignoring the second response. Or even just clarifying the rumor and moving on, Christina decides that it'd be best to expose this account to harassment from her much larger base. Who responded in kind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What was the reason? Truly?
Fans are supposed to only engage with a show if it matches how you specifically view it? They can't have questions, or criticisms, or thoughts? Because what was so mean about Merel's statement? What was insulting that Christina had to bring in shit that had nothing to do with the conversation? The rumor accusation? Is that worth getting attacked over? Is that worth attacking over?
The Correct Response
Move on.
No one would have an issue if the conversation ended a tweet earlier. Christina has over 9K followers, anyone could reasonably assume she was simply inundated with responses and couldn't/wouldn't respond further. Her first statement, was fine. To book fans, it may be frustrating, especially if they believed the rumor, but it was still a calm-ish response.
Merel could've been frustrated and that would've been the end of it. Instead, Christina decided her best course of action was to attack a fan, just because she enjoyed the same ship dynamic as people who were rude to her before. Decided to belittle that fan's interest in her show, bc she didn't like the way that fan interacted with them.
It's childish. It's gross. It's lashing out at someone b/c they want to know why the main character wasn't paid attention to in their show.
Anyway, it's clear Christina has a definitive disdain for the darklina fans of Shadow and Bone. It's clear she doesn't respect the people who support her show — unless they just unconditionally praise it. So that's it then. A disappointing end to Shadow and Bone, and an even more disappointing showing of character from the producers/writers.

hate when I see articles about how sab got canceled due to the mixed audience reaction after s2 because no!!! That's not why it got cancelled!!! Netflix doesn't care if the shows are good or not!!! Have you seen the reviews for shows like Wednesday!!! Netflix only cares about money!!!!

How is it that after all of that work, all of that buildup, and all of the SaB’s loose ends left to tie up in later seasons, you cancel the show? And not only that, but Netflix cancels one of its most popular shows? One of its only recent shows that has had genuine good reviews and is well-received not only by a huge fanbase, but also a casual audience.
All to cancel the show when it was building up to frankly what would have been some of its best writing. We would’ve seen Alina with her new powers. We would’ve seen THE ICE COURT.
This is genuinely my last straw with Netflix. Shadow and Bone is one of the only good things they’ve put out in years. Can’t wait to see what crap Netflix churns out in SaB’s place in the next few months.

Last week I read Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse series of novels, the basis for the Netflix series Shadow and Bone that I saw last year.  I enjoyed it quite a bit more than I did the adaptation.  I liked the TV show well enough (It kept me engaged through to the end of the season, which is a sight better than a lot of other TV shows have done recently) but it had some worldbuilding and background stumbles that undermined a lot of the story.  I was pleasantly surprised to learn that a lot of my complaints were for elements that were introduced solely for the adaptation and so weren’t in the books.
Instead of a single continuous storyline, or a primary storyline with separate spinoffs, the books are a series of interconnected trilogies and duologies that each have their own self-contained storylines.  This isn’t something I see very often right out of the gate in a shared universe, most other works try to set up a definite Main Character before they branch out like this.
The Shadow and Bone trilogy was the first series of novels and provides the main basis for the TV adaptation, and it was followed by the independent Six of Crows duology.  Though SoC takes place several years after SaB, Netflix introduced a wholly original new storyline for the SoC characters so that they could be included right away. The King of Scars duology is in many ways a sequel to both preceding works.
Most of my thoughts about the series have already been put out there in a lot of the reviews and commentary when the novels first came out.  Shadow and Bone was a strong first novel, but since it was a first novel Leigh Bardugo‘s writing style still needed polishing and the first-person perspective was somewhat clunky.  She improved as the trilogy went along, and according to some “I heard from somebody who read an article that claims an interview...” comments I saw online she has herself admitted that the early books are something of a rough start (Specifically, that the criticisms about Alina and Mal’s relationship are due to her faults in writing the couple, not that she was deliberately trying to write them to cause controversy).
Six of Crows is really where the writing and storytelling comes together, so I understand why the adaptation wanted to incorporate its characters from the very beginning.  The third-person semi-omniscient perspective is easier to digest than the first-person perspective, and the way the focus rotated through the different characters in different chapters helped direct and focus the story.  The story is standalone enough that you could start here without reading SaB at all if you wanted to, although you will obviously miss some of the context and background info in that case.
King of Scars tries to cap and payoff both preceding storylines.  I think it generally does this very well, with a single very big caveat that I feel the Darkling’s portion of this story should have been excised completely.  I believe, fundamentally, that his story should have ended in the SaB trilogy.  But the rest of the story worked well enough around him, so the duology as a whole is still a win for me.
This has made me excited for the next season of the TV series, I’m interested to see how they bring to life what comes next.

Hi Ana! Did you finish Shadow and Bone? What did you think of it? Favourite bits or your peast favourites?
Xxxxxxxx
Hi darling 💕 Sorry for taking so long, I had a very busy weekend.
There's no short answer to that, so buckle up! (I'll still try to keep it concise, if you want me to elaborate on something lmk!)
I binge watched it and enjoyed it a lot, but after some consideration there are quite a few things I was dissapointed by or that I feel could have been done better. I'll start with them and move to what I loved later. My biggest issues:
(Spoilers incoming!!)
Alina glowing. (I'm sorry lol, but it looked so weird!)
Zoya. Listen, I adore this girl. She's one of my favourite characters ever. And she was done so dirty here - the actress just doesn't have that spark, it was never pointed out how powerful and respected (or desired!) she is, I hated that she threw herself at Mal and the Darkling, when book!Zoya always made a point of not doing that. Implying she used to sleep with the Darkling was so so unnecessary, and it changed their dynamic uncomfortably. Also she happily went on about visiting her family in Keramzin (it was said in RoW that she did the opposite), her reaction to the Novokribirsk wasn't powerful and convincing enough to me, basically no. Not to mention her being so gentle and defeated after the Fold. Like c'mon. She should have been FURIOUS. RAGING.
The Crows seemed infantilized and Kaz specifically was not ruthless enough. He gave up too easily, and didn't seem like the feared Dirtyhands at all.
Kanej. I actually loved many things about them (later on that), but I think they went too far with the development of their relationship. It's already painfully obvious how much he cares for her and so all their great scenes from SoC won't have much sense. Also if they showed Kaz being more indifferent and ruthless, it would be more impactful to see him starting to care for Inej later, and now it won't be that big of a deal.
Helnik storyline felt very out of place among the rest of the plot.
I don't really like what they did with Jesper - Kit is awesome, and had some great moments, but they wrote him as a cliche comic relief. Also please don't kill me, but I couldn't care less about the goat. I had that awful feeling that I've seen this "joke" so many times before, and also it got repetitive quickly.
The Conductor thing made the Fold problem look kinda stupid. Like c'mon, the country is losing soldiers and money on some stupid skiffs and here's a guy who just gets through it by train, no big deal. Also how did he build the railways there.
Now for the good parts!
David Kostyk and Genya Safin. David stole the show every time he appeared, Genya was absolutely brilliant, and their interactions had me screaming. I can't wait to see their relationship develop further. Also Genya physically fighting the Conductor, yass girl.
The visuals! Every scenery was incredible. Ketterdam's atmosphere, the palace (the Darkling's war room!!!), all the cities. Same goes for costumes. Keftas 👌
Helnik. I know what I said before, but while their storyline didn't fit into this season, it was wonderful. Danielle as Nina is absolutely brilliant, I adore her. Matthias was also fantastic (when he smiled!!! oh my) I loved their banter, and the fact that they included the "not natural" dialogue 👌
Kanej things I loved: Kaz saying there's no one like Inej, her killing to save him, the quiet respect and understanding between them.
Inej. That's it, she was perfect.
Freddy was also incredible, I just don't really agree with how they wrote Kaz.
The amplifier. I could barely look at it, hated the sight. But I think it highlighted the cruelty and price of the practice well.
Inej and Zoya fighting together!!!
Malina!!
Inej stabbing the Darkling was powerful.
Ivan and Fedyor. They were adorable and I fully expect them to casually mention they're husbands in the next season.
Waffles 🥺
Sorry for making this so long, I hope you don't mind 😂 How did you like it Rua? ^^°

Shadow and Bone: a few gripes
Okay, you know I was pretty impressed with Shadow and Bone, but it would be neither fair nor in character from me to leave you with an impression that I thought there was nothing to improve. So here we go:
First of all, the pacing. Again, I am actually impressed with how well it did hold together for an adaptation of a mashup of two separate books in only eight episodes, but I think we can all agree that it definitely could have used at least an episode of two more to let the scenes and story beats breathe and have time for slightly more organic development. It must not have been an easy task to edit, and unfortunately, the seams are kinda visible at times. There absolutely were things that IMO required more time and attention to set up properly, especially from a non-reader’s point of view, one major thing being... well, the entire setting really, namely the war and politics aspects. For example, I’m still kind of foggy on who originally is fighting who and why and for how long and who exactly performed the coup and in whose name etc. etc. Now I know this is based on an YA book and those don’t tend to dig very deep into the finer points of the realities of military politics, but... it would be nice to understand why are these things even happening, you know?
This is inevitably related to the previous issue, but I also wasn’t always sure if I always bought what the show was trying to sell to me, emotionally, or sometimes even what it was trying to sell me, exactly. I have three specific examples, all with slightly different issues: - Mal and Alina. Too much iron wire, as we say in Finland. Flashbacks and voice overs (letters, diaries, etc.) are, in a cinematic sense, tools of telling instead of showing and should therefore be used with care and caution. Especially in regards to a relationship between characters. And here we had both, repeatedly. And whether that was the idea or not, that sort of tends to come across like you don’t trust a) your audience b) your actors c) the relationship. And none of that is a good thing. So while this is probably not going to endear me to that particular shipper demographic, a couple of those meadow flashbacks less would have sufficed with the time given to developing other storylines etc. You want to lead your audience to something and let them figure it out themselves, not spoon feed it to them. They cute. Trust that. (I mean, if I, a total newbie to the setting, figured out Jesper was a grisha by the second episode and am totally rooting for Genya and David based on like two tiny off-hand scenes... You know?) - This issue is sort of the opposite: Kaz and Inej. I mean, I got that it was supposed to be there, I just wasn’t feeling it. And I don’t know if the issue is the chemistry, the pacing, the writing, the acting or what. But something didn’t connect. Again, I haven’t read the books and from what I’ve gathered that particular dynamic is probably not something that is easy to adapt to screen -- especially with 2 billion different other things going on at a breakneck speed -- but I hope I’ll get more out of Kaz’s character in general next season because he’s the one I feel like I know the least so far. - Kirigan/Morozova/The Darkling/whatever His Murkiness wants to be called in this adaptation. And my issue? I was never sure how I was supposed to feel about him. Now, that might very well be the idea for all I know, but I was honestly kinda left scratching my head about him. I mean, due to the Tumblr osmosis I had some idea what to expect, so my initial reaction was pretty much: “huh, I’d thought he’d be worse”. I’d expected him to like... stalk around like a storm cloud with a literal cloak of shadows billowing in his wake at all times, and be much more of a manipulative/pushy creep with Alina from the start. Instead he just... seemed kinda normal? A bit of a Chessmaster, yeah, but absolutely nothing that wasn’t entirely to be expected from someone in his position. I tried to gauge the appropriate attitude towards him from how other characters treated him, personally and by reputation, like... is he supposed to be a scary badass? Just scary? Just badass? Neither?? Like, he’s the leader of a wizard army and has spooky and unusual powers? He kinda should be a little scary? I mean, I know Ben Barnes (who can easily be considerably more intimidating if he wants to be) wanted to humanize him and they decided to use “The Darkling” as an insult rather than a title, but... When even the grisha-fearing Fjerdans were less “Oh shit, it’s The Darkling, he eats babies for breakfast!” and more “Ugh, it’s that bitch.”... Let’s just say him switching gears to full-on mustache-twirling Disney villain felt pretty jarring, honestly. Especially since, again, I’m still fairly confused about his motivations and goals because the entire backstory to that whole thing was kinda glossed over. So he wants... what? Grisha supremacy via magical weapons of mass destruction? Because he has mommy issues? Because someone killed his girlfriend a couple of centuries ago?? And was that the plan all along or did he just decide to go balls-to-the-wall bonkers when Alina left him? Because right now his goal seems to be more like ‘death to all who oppose me’. And that’s... pretty boring, honestly. If he’s to be our Big Bad, I’d like a bit more nuance -- and that’s not to rag on Ben’s performance or even his choices to play the the character as cutely smitten with Alina, but the way the character is otherwise presented. Once again, I know this is fairytale-ish YA fantasy, but if your source material has a typical garden variety super polarized love triangle (of sorts, anyway), your job is to make it more interesting in adaptation. So while I do commend the fact that they apparently made both of the guys less of douchebags, I feel like the tone should have been adjusted accordingly in other aspects. If that makes sense.
I think that was it, for the most part. I mean I could bitch about technical details or wildly inconsistent pronunciation of names or whatever, but those would just be nitpicking. Tagging at least @the-darkling but everyone please feel free to discuss!

In this episode, you will learn that no one is immune to the Grishaverse if you so much as look at Kaitlin, Emberlin loves her strong female leads almost as much as she loves a good map, that the Apparat is a stinky lil guy, and one of us has Very Strong Feelings about Malyen Oretsev. Does the show live up to the book? Is the Darkling an emo senior citizen that desperately needs to be put in a retirement home? Does Emberlin's boyfriend live up to the expectation of tracking a magical deer for her through the wilderness with flowers and chocolate in tow?

Review for Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Only after quite a while of having finished this book did I realize that I never wrote a review. So I apologize if this isn't great, its been a little while since i read the book. I only have a rough draft.
4.8 stars
Yet another amazing book by Leigh! I was very excited to start reading this book and I loved it.
The book definitely started of slow, but not bad. I'm pretty sure this is just Leigh's writing style tho. But all in all, it didn't bother me at all because it was good. and I appreciate that.
The story progressed nicely but near the end there was barely to no build up to book two. If I did not know there was a second book then I would have been convinced it was just a stand alone book.
The characters were great but the relationships were... less than great. They could have been a lot better in my opinion. I didn't think over half of them made sense. But they didn't ruin the story at all for me.
Tumblr media
Alina Starkov: She's ok. I'm a little sick of the main character thinks theyre ugly and useless trope but it also kinda made sense but it was still annoying. Other than that she was okay
Malyen Oretsev: Yeah no. He's a dick.
Darkling: I feel like you guys are going to judge the hell out of me for what im about to say because I have such a type. But i loved him. Hes a very morrally grey character and written pretty well. I liked it a lot
Genya Safin: I'd read the book just for Genya alone.

The soc book fandom is much bigger than the sab one but in the grander scheme of things, neither of them hold a candle to the actual show's fandom now and even less to what it will become, from what I see on social media platforms, Tumblr but especially the bigger ones like twitter and Instagram, in terms of ships so far, darklina seems to be winning, there was even a hilarious tweet from an soc fan with like 1k likes about how they're bitter the books got made into a movie bc they knew darklina would be the biggest ship and it happened and they said we'll pay for it or something... 🤣 🤣. The soc books were/are popular but compared to big book franchises they're very very small, obviously a show on Netflix is gonna have much more exposure and so far darklina seems to be very beloved by the stans and the locals but also very hated which is quite funny and reminds me of reylo on a smaller scale, where we're busy making content and the rest of the people are holding pitchforks wanting to burn is a the altar for simply existing. My favorite thing about all of this besides the fact that we get do much great stuff and fanfiction will be our lord and savior after whatever shit they pull in S2 bc I've already read multiple with a better magic system, better characterization than lb could even muster in her lifetime, it's the fact that I am crossing my fingers that they got a review about the most popular things and it is again darklina and Aleksander if twitter/Tumblr/insta/imdb/YouTube are to go by, idk about tiktok that site is a hellscape full of the dumbest takes to ever manifest out of mankind so I do not venture there, anyway my point is, imagining lb fuming over this fact brings me some small measure of relief and satisfaction. And if these things were not based on books where we knew the ending and I've seen a lot of people unwilling to watch bc they know darklina will not be endgame, and if we weren't sliding towards a repeat of the 19th century where people but this time women are trying to tell us what to enjoy lest it corrupt our minds and we become whores (ie if this was the TVD/twilight era) the fandom would be at least twice as big and we could've been able to bully them by sheer size into a darklina endgame but more importantly a darkling redemption bc it's what he deserves.
I'm so dumb that hadn't really even thought about how many new fans would be joining from the Netflix show! I kind of assumed the only people who would be watching would be all the original trilogy fans and SoC fans and that maybe the show would spark some interest from people who've never heard of the books but that it would only be marginal ☠️
But judging solely on AO3, the number of fics for Darklina has shot through the roof. Like, I think prior to the show, we had maybe like 300 fics? And that was from the entirely of 2012-2020 and now it's surpassed 700 new fics in since the show's release 😂
The Darklina thirst is real 👀
I actually don't expect them to change the show's ending, but considering how the majority of the trilogy fandom was already fueled by a mountainous foundation of spite, tears, and rage after that garbage ending, it can really only mean MORE Darklina fics and content 🙇🏽‍♀️

I loved how all the scenes with the crows were different because obviously they couldn’t take them directly from the books, but they all had the exact same energy as actual scenes from the books and I think that’s very adaptation of them
