Most of Ravka is feudal, from what I understand. They haven't felt the pressure to industrialize since they use the Grisha for everything. However, the Darkling does mention in the first book it will only be a matter of time before the Kerch and Novyi Zem invent weapons and industrialize faster than them.

But yes, realizing this is a feudal absolute monarchy does make the whole Nikolai "return of the true king" plot and throwing the Darkling under the bus seem a bit out of touch 😬

Fandom, fanfiction, and the friends I made thru Tumblr carried me thru 2020 and 2021, 2 wild years of being an essential worker in a global pandemic, moving (2x), getting divorced after 13 years of marriage, and more.

2022 wasn't much less eventful. I had a hysterectomy, started dating, got a promotion and moved (again), this time to a new state to live with my best friend. In 2023, I largely quit drinking alcohol.

Somewhere along the way, fandom and writing took a back seat. Not that I didn't love Supernatural, not that I didn't love reading and writing fanfiction, but that creative energy was channelled in other directions.

It's November 2023, almost 4.5 years since I wrote my first story about Sam and Rowena. I saw a gif of Jared and Jensen at Jaxcon - and a story started to form in my mind. I found the focus to write it down, and fortunately still had a friend willing to give me feedback.

As soon as I find my laptop this weekend, I'm posting my first story in over a year. Maybe closer to 2. There's another leftover one I never finished, and I have an idea for one after that. I don't know if this is a random burst of inspiration or if I'm starting a new chapter.

I never anticipated all the ways my life would change in the last 4 years. I have no idea what the future could hold. But it feels good to write again. It feels good to come back to the Winchesters.

I know ur fic was more Wendy-centric for her development and character, (which, thank you—we love girlboss Wendy, I love her so) but the stendy got me really hooked just because of the way you wrote them ! I like being able to see their flaws as a couple—without wendy being perceived as a total bitch (like some anti’s in the fandom paint her out to be) and Stan being honest with his feelings instead of completely neglecting/ghosting her like he does. In the fic, Wendy does prioritize her life so she can build a life with Stan, but she doesn’t realize she’s hurting him in the process. It’s how the two of them should be written. They do have toxic traits in the show that are very questionable ( their jealousy, for starters… stan’s dependency on her, wendy’s insecurity with everything stan does that’s not controllable…) but it’s times like in this writing where they do grow a bit and finally accept they don’t work out. It’s extremely hard on them because they’ve been so co-dependent that they can’t see life without the other.

on that same coin however, people need to understand that they can work together but they have such big contrasts and complications that they have to work on for the relationship they want.

sometimes they just. need to be on their own to figure that out. and that’s why this story ended up being so good because Wendy found her worth and now knows what and who she is without him.

they need to take care—find themselves before they can have someone else.

Wendy needed this. She’s such an activist in the show and in this story…Stan at the time just wasn’t helping like she thought he was. And he knew. He needed to let go.

Wendy is her own self at the end. It’s so nice to see. We love character development and to see her find confidence in who Wendy Testaburger is and will continue to be.

I like Nina/Matthias as much as the next reader, BUT:

I have to say making a romance between a queer fantasy-Slav who belongs to a Jewish-inspired minority and a guy who belonged to a Nazi-coded organization was. A Choice ☕🍵

I think H*lnik only makes sense if you examine it as a redo of M*lina.

Because if you don't, this is exactly why the entire Grisha trilogy and the subsequent books examining the role of the Grisha in the verse is so weirdly anti-Grisha and falls apart the moment you try to apply some real-world logic to it.

I know Leigh mentioned that while the Grisha were inspired by Jewish persecution, she wanted to be careful about how far she extended the metaphor probably because if you take it to its natural conclusions, it leads to some....uncomfortable implications.

After Ruin and Rising was published, LB probably got the full blast of how angry the fans were that she stripped Alina of her powers and then paired her with the one man that took a whole trilogy to finally accept her for who she was----only to have that part of her destroyed in the process. It felt wholly unearned and left behind some messy implications. Like, oh, if you're part of a minority that is being systemically persecuted by the institutions and society you live in, the solution isn't to demand that the world change (as the Darkling demands), it's to change yourself so that people won't hurt you anymore.

And that was just...........a fucking disaster of a message for rather obvious reasons.

On the other hand, H*lnik is like a better-written version of M*lina because it's not the woman who has to change and become a Muggle in order for her partner to accept her. It's the man who has to change his bigotry and accept the woman as she is. Which, okay. Fine. It's Fine™. It's better written compared to M*lina, but only if you remove any of the implications of the fantasy coding. Because otherwise, you're still left with this weird mess where a woman from a persecuted class has to educate a bigot who needlessly persecutes her. It's her duty to change him by constantly proving her humanity to him.

And...why would you want a partner who you constantly have to prove your humanity to? If they can't see it, they're not worth it. And if they do grow out of their prejudices on their own or because one day they finally see you as a human being, then....great! Good for them. It's not a sign that you should get into a relationship with them as a reward for them doing the bare fucking minimum 😬

I moved in the fall - I live 20 minutes from the ocean now, which is fucking amazing. Between moving and dating and a new roommate and all the change, fandom and writing has fallen down my priority list.

But Ive missed it. I've missed my boys (J2), my queen (Rowena) and creating worlds with my words. I've missed fandom and friendship.

I'm not sure I'll ever be involved the way I was during the finale season but I'm back.
