Cold Hands
The shadow-cursed lands were cold. Being a creature who always valued heat, Devi decided she hated this region for many reasons – the ambient cold that sunk into her bones and refused to leave was just one of those reasons. She had never been a person to complain about being too hot, even in the heat of summer in Baldur's Gate; here, she could barely get warm.
She swore as her lockpick broke in the lock of a building in the ruined village, her fingers too numb for the deft manipulations she needed to pick the lock. “Here, I'll do it,” Astarion said, grabbing her hands to shift them out of his way; a second later, he hissed. “Hells, darling, I'm a vampire and I think I'm still warmer than you!”
“Probably,” Devi grumbled, letting Astarion move her away. She breathed on her cold fingers, trying to get some heat in them before putting her gloves back on. “Fucking shadow curse… fucking cold…”
“You can't be that cold,” she heard Wyll say as he appeared at her side; his hands settled over hers and he swore out loud from the shock. “Oh, apparently you can be that cold!” he exclaimed, letting go of her hands. “And I thought Shadowheart was bad for cold hands!” He pointedly ignored Shadowheart's frown in his direction.
Devi wrinkled her nose. She knew the Sharran cleric also suffered from a persistent case of being chilly. “I'm not that bad,” she started to say.
“Yes, you are,” Astarion said, not looking up from the lock. “I dare you to go put your hands on Lae’zel when we return to the inn.”
“... No thanks. I like living.” Devi tucked her hands into her armpits, trying to warm them up. “Where's Gale when I need him? I need him to cast that hand-warming spell he has on me.”
“I think that spell only works on the hands of the person casting it,” Wyll said, a smirk pulling at his lips. “Sorry.”
Devi groaned, then shivered as a cold breeze (like there was any other type of breeze here) blew through the alley they were in, making her shiver. She cowered against the wall of the ramshackle building, trying to avoid the wind as much as she could. “Please hurry up, Astarion. Just because you don't feel the cold as badly doesn't mean the rest of us are that lucky!”
“Yes, please do hurry up,” Shadowheart agreed, moving to huddle against the wall with Devi. “Wyll, come stand here so you can shield us from the wind.”
“Oh, like I don't get cold too,” Wyll retorted, even as he obediently came over to try and provide a bit of a windblock for the two women. “Better?”
“Not really,” Devi mumbled, shivering. “How much am I going to get stabbed if I try to use you for body heat?”
“You won't get stabbed, but Gale will probably set me on fire,” Wyll muttered. “If you're going to use someone for body heat, use him.”
Devi frowned, wondering why Gale would set Wyll on fire. It wasn't like the wizard had really made any moves indicating a romantic or sexual interest in Devi. Sure, they'd flirted with each other, and they were sharing a bedroll (mostly to keep each other’s nightmares at bay), but if Gale hadn't tried to kiss her or touch her during the long nights they spent snuggling away the bad dreams, although Devi would have loved to feel him trying something with her… Gale wouldn't be jealous of Wyll being a walking heater for Devi.
Would he?
Her thoughts were interrupted by the click of the stubborn lock finally giving way. Astarion straightened up, a triumphant look in his red eyes. “Victory is mine! We'll look for those documents, and then get the hell back to the inn so you two ladies can warm back up.”
“There's any warmth to be found in these gods-forsaken lands?” Devi asked, feeling another shiver wrack her frame.
Astarion snorted. “Give Gale those pathetic kicked-puppy eyes of yours, and I'm sure he'll invent a spell to warm you up sufficiently, if he doesn't already know of one.”
The wind had just picked up as the day had dragged on, bringing with it a cold drizzle that soaked through to the bone – even Astarion and Wyll were shivering by the time the group made it back to the shelter of the Last Light Inn and their camp on its lawn. At the roaring campfire, Gale looked up from the cookpot as the group approached, a smile appearing on his face. “Welcome back! A fortunate thing that you returned before–”
Devi didn't let the wizard finish his sentence. She just hurried to his side and wrapped her frozen fingers around his robe-clad bicep. Gale yelped at the cold shock to his system and dropped the ladle back into the soup pot, indulging in a couple of choice profanities. Honestly, Devi hadn't even known the wizard could swear like that. “Hells, you're freezing, Devi! Did you jump in the river on the way?”
The rogue shook her head, teeth chattering as she tightened her hold on Gale's arm. “You're warm,” she mumbled, sidling up to him, trying to leech his body heat away through his robes.
“And you are not!” Gale spoke the Burning Hands incantation, then squirmed his arm free of Devi's grip before taking her cold hands in his own, heat radiating from his skin. She groaned in relief, feeling her hands start to thaw out in Gale's grip. “How are you so cold?” he asked, tsking as he gently ran his thumbs over the back of her hands. “Were you hit by an ice spell while out there?”
“Just unlucky?” Devi asked, shivering despite the heat on her hands.
“You may have some of the worst luck in Faerûn, if your hands are naturally so–” Gale yelped again as Shadowheart appeared on his other side, mimicking Devi's initial grip on his other bicep. “For the love of all the gods, what is it with you half-Elves having freezing hands?!”
“Genetic anomalies?” Shadowheart asked, still shivering. “Oh, you’re warm. Does being a mage make you run hot? You’re warmer than the two of us are…”
“Not warm enough to thaw out both of you!” Gale retorted. His eyes narrowed as Wyll and Astarion started to approach him. “Don't even think about it. There's hot soup if you want to warm up without torturing me.”
“How come they're allowed to use you to warm up?” Astarion complained.
“It isn't that they're allowed to use me,” Gale said. “I was ambushed!” He looked around, then shouted, “Karlach! Save me!”
There was a crash from the tents, then the sound of running footsteps as Karlach booked it over to the fire, eyes wide and fists balled up. “What? Where? What's going on?” Lae’zel was a step behind her, a knife in hand; she sighed and shook her head when she realised there were no enemies around for her to kill.
“I'm being turned to ice, thanks to our two half-Elves here!” Gale quickly explained. “They're heat vampires!” He was promptly swatted by Shadowheart; it did nothing to erase his smirk.
“Hey!” Devi protested. “I am not a vampire of any sort!”
“You're colder than our traditional vampire!” Gale retorted, squeezing her hands pointedly. Astarion snorted, but didn’t deny Gale’s statement.
“Heat vampires? I can help with that.” Karlach relaxed with a grin, then came up and wrapped her arms around Shadowheart, picking the cleric up and earning a squeal as the brunette lost her hold on Gale’s arm. The tiefling hissed in surprise. “Oh, you weren't kidding – she's even cooling down my engine!”
“... Warmth,” Shadowheart mumbled, snuggling into Karlach's embrace and sighing happily. “Oh, merciful Dark Lady, I'm finally feeling a little warm!”
“That's what I'm here for,” Karlach said with a laugh. “Between you and me, we can make an ideal body temperature.” She looked back at Gale and winked. “I saved you from one heat vampire, but you're on your own for the other.”
Gale chuckled. “I can deal with just one vampire.” He looked down as Devi flexed her fingers in his hold. “Can you feel your hands now, my dear?”
Devi nodded. Her hands indeed did finally feel warm, but the rest of her body was still cold. She stepped up into Gale's space and wrapped her arms around his waist, trying to absorb as much of his body heat as she could. “Does that Burning Hands spell work for the entire body?”
“I'm very good, but I'm not that good,” Gale muttered. He slid his own arms around her shoulders and tugged her face into his neck, shivering at her cold nose touching his skin. “And I had thought you were cold in the Underdark!”
“I never thought I'd say this, but I miss the Underdark,” Devi wistfully said. “It wasn't quite this cold!” She shivered again. “Can you just… I don't know, set me on fire?”
“I'm not setting you on fire, no matter how cold you are,” Gale firmly said. He started rubbing his hot hands up and down Devi’s arms, making her softly groan into his shoulder as the limbs started warming up. A moment later, the wizard raised his hands to his eye level, frowning. “... You’ve achieved a minor miracle, Devi. I think your cold body managed to extinguish the Burning Hands spell prematurely.” He pried himself out of Devi’s arms, then pushed her at Karlach and Shadowheart. “Go snuggle with Karlach while I find where those bowls for the soup went. Getting something hot in your bellies should help you warm up faster.”
Much though Devi would have preferred to stay in Gale’s arms, she couldn’t deny the appeal of Karlach’s radiating body heat – and the promise of Gale’s cooking was worth any sacrifice. She darted the two steps over to the tiefling and attached herself to Karlach’s midsection, making the taller woman yelp as she set Shadowheart back on her own feet. “Fucking hells, woman! I didn’t need Dammon to cool my engine down – I just apparently needed to snuggle you two!” she said as she wrapped an arm around each half-Elf.
“You’re my favourite person right now,” Shadowheart mumbled, finally looking relaxed for the first time since that morning.
“You’re my second favourite,” Devi said. “Gale still wins as my first favourite since he feeds me good food.” She heard Gale chuckle from the campfire as he started dishing up bowls of hot soup.
Karlach snorted. “Consider me unsurprised that he’s your first favourite, Dev,” she said with a grin. “When he– OI!” She jumped, startled. “For fuck’s sake, how are all you Elvish people so damned cold, Astarion?” she demanded, looking at the vampire who had just wrapped his arms around her from behind to get in on the sharing of body heat.
“Don’t look at me, I’m a vampire. Before I was turned, I had a perfectly average body temperature,” Astarion answered. “Besides, I’m reasonably sure Halsin has plenty of body heat to go around, and he’s also an Elf.”
“Halsin is also an anomaly as far as Elves go,” Wyll pointed out, looking like he was contemplating joining the snuggle-pile. His thoughts were diverted by Gale placing a steaming bowl of soup in his hands. “How many Elves do you see around his size?” he asked, wrapping his hands around the bowl and sighing in happiness as he started to warm up from the dish and its contents.
Astarion thought for a moment. “Fair point. Perhaps it’s an exclusive half-Elf thing. If we get Jaheira into this snuggle-pile…”
“She doesn’t seem to be the snuggly type,” Shadowheart pointed out. “And I don’t think she’ll appreciate being asked about her body temperature by the likes of us.”
Astarion shrugged. “Then we go back to the theory of human and Elf blood combining makes for half-Elves who can’t retain body heat worth a damn. We’re two for three for known half-Elves being – what did Gale call them? ‘Heat vampires’?”
“And the aforementioned heat vampires would not fare well in a Waterdeep winter,” Gale said with a chuckle, approaching the snuggling group with two full bowls in his hands, a third balanced over his shoulder with a Mage Hand spell. “One for each of you walking icicles, and one for Karlach, who I suspect will need to warm back up, herself. I’ll get another bowl for you in a moment, Astarion.”
“Oh, I could kiss you, Gale,” Devi mumbled, accepting the hot bowl from Gale, her fingers brushing against his. She flushed, hoping nobody else had heard her soft words – not even the wizard to whom they had been directed.
To judge by how Gale’s ears went red, he had heard her. But he didn’t appear displeased – he winked at her, then tilted his cheek invitingly. Recognising what he offered, Devi grinned and stretched up on tip-toe to kiss Gale’s bearded cheek, little more than a light peck. It was still enough to make him shiver, even as he smiled. “Do eat up – it will help you warm up faster. The last thing we need is anyone coming down with pneumonia here.”
Devi nodded and smiled at Gale, then snuggled into Karlach’s side and took a bite of the potato soup. Somehow, Gale made the simple dish taste better than almost anything she’d eaten in the Lower City before her abduction. She sighed happily, content to be among her friends and finally warming up, even in this hellish environment. She was still a little surprised to realise that she was growing to love her motley crew of friends, instead of just liking them. But she wouldn’t have traded any of them for the world.

War metaphors in writing about love affairs are so out of place! (I’m saying this as a person affected by war.) Especially when we are talking about relations between Cosette and Marius (mostly unfolding in their fantasy). But let’s chalk this up to Hugo’s peculiarities.
We already know the details of Marius falling in love with Cosette, and now we get an idea of what it was like for Cosette. It’s curious that at first, it was again about looks and appearance. Marius became interested in Cosette ONLY when she became pretty, and Cosette quite early found Marius handsome. But unlike him, Cosette went further and noticed other attractive aspects of his personality: “he did not appear to be at all stupid, that his whole person was noble, gentle, simple, proud, and that, in short, though he seemed to be poor, yet his air was fine.”
And then Hugo comes up with his further misjudgements about women, comparing their beauty to a weapon, probably hinting at the possibility of using it to manipulate men, which can ultimately backfire: “Women play with their beauty as children do with a knife. They wound themselves.” Oh, no...
There is an opinion among cultural and social historians that the concept of romantic love (especially as a prerequisite for a happy marriage) is a modern invention of the eighteenth century, the outcome of sentimental novels’ influence on passionate readers, especially women. It seems that Hugo is delving into this topic, exploring whether romantic love is natural or artificial, and whether it is possible to be romantically in love when you have never heard or read about it. And he portrays after-convent Cosette as an innocent and ignorant creature (the passage about censorial changes of amour to tambour or parndour in the convent are really amusing) who has no idea of what love is, not even its name. And here Hugo again stretches the situation to the extreme: in his convent digression, he himself claimed that those walls were not impenetrable, and young girls were dreaming of romantic adventures, gossiping, and secretly read forbidden books (about boys’ sins). And it is also hard to believe that Jean Valjean was censoring the books she read, not allowing her to take hold of books where romantic love was mentioned (although, we really have no idea what Cosette was reading, perhaps she only had devotional literature). As a result of this thought experiment, Hugo concludes that romantic love was natural, and therefore Cosette could “love ignorantly,” without knowing the concept of love.
After all, we learn that Marius’ and Cosette’s ideas of each other are very similar and elevated. For her as well, it was “a sort of admiration at a distance, a mute contemplation, the deification of a stranger,” and she “set herself to adoring Marius as something charming, luminous, and impossible.” They are worth each other, aren’t they?
And then Hugo introduces the topic of Cosette’s extreme coquetry and undermines the charm of the picture he had just created.

Sending you the ball back (seishin)
When I started shipping it if I did:
Day one — well day one of me playing DDC. Since I had a few years (late middle school + high school) where I wasn't following Touhou canon anymore and it came out during those times, I found out about them when I caught up to all the canon I missed circa 2015. But I had managed to not get a single thing about them spoiled somehow so the experience was the same.
My thoughts:
I love them so so much but you all know that. But specifically out of all the Touhou ships I feel like this is the one that's the most "contained?" Like they actually have a complete story arc that starts with DDC, then ISC, and "ends" with their conversation in Grimoire of Usami. If I wanted to explain most TH ships to someone who isn't in the fandom, I would have to pull out a diagram and hundreds of small details and worldbuilding bits to get it to make sense, but for these two there's a cohesive "trilogy" that contains a whole love story with onscreen character arcs and a satisfying "epilogue". Because of that I feel like this is a very special ship, it really stands out from the other pairings in that regard…
Things done in fanworks that annoy me:
I think people think I'm joking when I say I'm an unironic Seija apologist, but I genuinely dislike the framing of Shinmyoumaru as a helpless victim. I do think there's no real victim, that they mutually used each other awkwardly, but if it HAS to be a contest of who has it worse… What Seija did to Shin was: invent a bunch of overinflated bullshit to push Shin over the edge of joining a cause that she already half-agreed with without the lies. What Shin did to Seija was: weaponize her weakness to throw her under the bus as the main perpetrator AND not back down from that narrative EVEN AFTER a DEAD OR ALIVE MANHUNT was called on Seija. I feel like out of these two betrayals there is one that is way harder to forgive and it's not Seija's! They're both brilliant manipulators in totally different ways and it's one of the reasons they fit so well in the first place aaaaahhhhhhhhhh. I prefer fanworks that are more morally gray but if I'm to be compeltely honest I also want to see a more villainous Shin to compensate for all the fanworks that smooth her edges so much!
Things I look for in fanworks:
One of the big charm points of this ship for me is the Bonnie & Clyde dynamic, the partner in criming, so I can't get enough of fanworks of them working well together and being in sync. I like fanart where they look kind of cool, serious and competent, I find it very romantic in a way.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:
Because of DDC being such a self-contained complete story like I said earlier there's not a lot of material of them interacting with the rest of the world… I love love love Sei/Shin/Reimu and Sei/Shin/Marisa because it has interesting power dynamics but it needs to be a throuple because as soon as you take Seija or Shinmyoumaru out I'm not interested.
Thought I like the idea of Shin going for other women during their time apart. Because I have a loving jealousy tropes too much problem. And I'm interested in Seija having to face insecurities. In that regard I'm into the Shin/Tenshi dynamic in AoCF. Because I think a Tenshi VS Seija rivalry could get very ugly (positive). But once again this is still with a SeiShin lens…
My prefered future/ending for them:
I want them to have big dramatic adventures. I do think they can change some of the unfair things in Gensokyo if they get over themselves first. It's also the kind of ship where I appreciate a tragic ending and a tragic death but I haven't found the fanwork that would hit this the right way for me yet :3
What is their favorite activity together:
Planning adventures. I picture Shin as the kind of person who can spend hours talking about projects, travels, shady businesses, things she wants to try someday. And she enjoys doing SOME of these things but coming up with the ideas counts as part of the fun. And paradoxically to the fact that her whole thing is playing with negatives, I feel like Seija would be a good Yes Man for those situations because the way she always twists and criticizes everything could be pretty stimulating to bounce ideas off. I'm getting frustrated because there's no english equivalent to "faire des plans sur la comète" and "refaire le monde" but I can totally see them spending a night on a high peak in Gensokyo, pointing to locations they want to travel the next day and bantering all night while mapping out the whole itinerary, then waking up in the morning and going the opposite direction of where they had planned.
A fic I’d like to write about them/A sentence from one already in my WIPs:
(not a prose line cause this fic is in its rough 1st draft state a but a scene placeholder that I like) "Seija goes to sleep holding one of Shin's robes next to her head to make sure she dreams of her."

🦇 The Fiancée Farce Book Review 🦇
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
❝ She was a total fucking goner. Whatever magic Tansy was made of, Gemma wanted to drown in it, revel in the honeyed heat burning her up from the inside out. It was better than the finest bourbon she’d ever had the pleasure of sipping. ❞
❓ #QOTD What was the best sapphic novel you read this year (I need recs!!)? ❓
[ Find my review below or on Goodreads | Storygraph | Literal ]
🦇 After losing her parents and a traumatic romantic experience as a teen, Tansy Adams focuses all her time and energy on her late father's bookstore. To dodge questions about her love life, Tansy invents Gemma, a fake girlfriend inspired by the stunning cover model on a best-selling romance book. She never expected that real-life Gemma would step into her life, play along, and announce they were engaged, imploding that white lie into a full-on farce. Gemma van Dalen, the outcast of her wealthy family, needs a spouse to inherit Van Dalen Publishing; her grandmother's legacy. In exchange for Tansy's hand in marriage, Gemma offers to save Tansy's beloved bookstore before it's sold off. Can their marriage of convenience work, or will Gemma's scheming family get between them?
❝ "As for feeling like you’ve failed, well, failure is an inescapable part of life. But failing doesn’t make you a failure. And I’m sorry your father made you feel like the two were synonymous. You are more than your achievements, Gemma. You are brilliant, and ambitious, and you are good, do you hear me? And what you do or do not achieve in this life has no bearing on your value.” ❞
💜 Oh. My. Goddess. That's right: goddess, because that's exactly what these two cunning, sassy women are. Alexandria Bellefleur has taken the generally predictable "marriage of convenience" trope and turned it into an emotional, powerful story about finding the love you don't realize you deserve. Both Tansy and Gemma are full of so much pain, their family trees full of broken branches (and in Gemma's case, poisonous barbs). For them to find love and family in one another so unexpectedly (for them, at least, because, come on, that's what we're here for), so flawlessly...it's not only swoon-worthy and sweet, but a relief. It's the insane, instant, undeniable chemistry between Tansy and Gemma that empowers their every interaction from the start, but unlike other marriage-of-convenience stories, smut doesn't drive their relationship. What starts off as a business relationship blossoms from a friendship to a true partnership. Gemma is sweet and giving as she navigates her first real relationship, while Tansy comes out of her shell to defend Gemma when no one else has. These goddesses support one another, even when the relationship is only a farce, until it all becomes real. The character development between them both is a flawless example of how empowering love--and having someone by your side--can really be.
🦇 As much as I loved every interaction between Gemma and Tansy, it's difficult to love everything that happens outside of their sweet sapphic bubble. The toxic men--namely Tucker, Gemma's cousin, who manipulated teenage Tansy and shared underage nudes of her--seem unrealistically cruel. Tansy's step-mother goes from a social ladder-climbing step-Bridzilla to suddenly sympathetic. None of the secondary characters have real layers, making them no more than pawns to the story's plot progression. Because of that, none of the conflicts or twists are surprising. The boardroom scene/resolution seemed beyond unrealistic, regardless of how sweet the gesture was. You may need to expand your suspension of disbelief and focus on the sapphic sweetness for this one.
🦇 Recommended for fans of Stars Collide, Cleat Cute, and Love at First Set. This heartwarming sapphic romance is full of feels; a stunning addition to any shelf.
✨ The Vibes ✨ 🩷 Fake Dating 🩷 Marriage of Convenience 🩷 Bi MCs (Bi4Bi) 🩷 Sapphic Romance 🩷 Mental Health Rep 🩷 Opposites Attract

honestly at this point I feel like “romantic love was invented to manipulate women” - in order to continue the population. because if more women really knew the truth, none of them would ever want to sleep with a man again.

“Texts on Post-Truth, Violence, Anger” by Dorian Sari: Review
I'm writing this review in French, because I have met Dorian and we spoke in French.
Bonsoir. Addendum - 24.11.2022 I really liked his passage about Switzerland (page 48-49); it's so genuine. "The wall of silence and passivity." And the chapter, called "I sell Guns, and I call Myself Neutral" (page 56 to 73) and yes, the first political party in Switzerland is the extreme right one. Honestly, my least favourite chapter was the one called "The future is genderless" (page 105 to 119) too long, too repetitive and maybe too excluding. The weakest chapter of the book. No enough people can relate to the problem. It's weird that he used to call the women wearing all black scarf included "cockroach", because in my family we called them raven (aka les corbeaux/karga). All he says about Erdogan and the AKP's party is true. They have killed the country forever, "Today nobody belongs to that country except Erdogan" (page 134). Nice quotes: - Page 36: "I have a hyperactive and depressive nature." - Page 41: "But by experience, it has been proven that my escapes were only illusions." - Page 50: "Thought is subversive, revolutionary, destructive, and fearful. Thought tramples against privilege, rigid tradition, and all pleasure habits. Thought is anarchic and illegal, never gives a fuck about authority. Thought considers those scared humans who pretend to be the ruler of the universe, like little black-holes surrounded with endless silence. Thought is gigantic, fast, and free. It is the light of the world and the biggest step one takes. I told them that we are the mind of the future. What we think, what we believe now, will be alive in the future." - Page 69: "The art world that we want to romantically believe it may not really exist. There are humorless problems in the art world, as much as in any other field." - Page 81: "When someone comes to an exhibition with an expectation or preconditioned mindset, it ends most of the time with deception." - Page 89: "Shaping to love and manipulating to care." - Page 91: "I was bombarded enough by a certain type of image, so as to fantasize life more than what I could invent by myself; with my own imagination." - Page 92: "At that age, most movies were having a happy ending. They were telling me that if I dreamed and believed, then my dreams could come true." - Page 93: "The absence of basic reality calls into question what the reality is and if it even exists." - Page 94: "But we shouldn't forget that USA will always put the USA first." - Page 100: "Patriarchy's main central body is made of domination and then violence. And money is the measurement for almost everything in this selfishness." - Page 125: "with my polyamorous heartbreaks." ps: I love the piece of art that comes with the book, nicely done.

☕️ not really a topic but i would LOVE it if you try to convince someone who has not seen a single episode of x files (me) to watch x files
thank you for this dream assignment. I’m unhinging my jaw now.
Mulder and Scully aren’t like their reputations. they get talked about like these big ideas—the Believer and the Skeptic—but they are so not dry or one-dimensional or anything else that you might be expecting. they’re the most human characters I’ve ever seen on screen. Scully is curious and earnest and so eager to succeed, but she throws away her definition of success to do the right thing (and because she’s a little rebel. I’m not spoiling anything beyond the first few minutes of the pilot to say that she’s assigned to Mulder to spy on him, but she likes and respects him too much to do it). Mulder is hardworking, kind, restless. so idealistic it looks selfish. he sees his lost sister in every victim. he has trouble sleeping, and I love that it’s not part of the plot. it’s just part of him. some procedurals don’t like to go home with the characters at the end of the day. The X-Files feels like it’s always going home with Mulder and Scully, even when they’re on the road.
every good thing about the show goes through them. that’s the whole point of the story: you think the truth is “out there,” but it isn’t—it’s in other people. and that might sound sentimental or obvious, but The X-Files makes you feel how heavy it is to love and be loved. a lot of Mulder and Scully’s connection is unspoken. and yes, sometimes that gives them communication issues, which I personally think is very sexy and interesting of them, but it’s also so powerful. here are these two people whose job forces them to question everything about the world, but they don’t question each other.
I know I’m getting very Always Sunny conspiracy board about this, but nothing else feels like The X-Files. it’s a mood at the highest level. the whole philosophy behind the show is that knowing there’s a monster in the shadows is scarier and more interesting than seeing that monster. the most powerful things are the ones that can’t really be understood or explained. it’s the same with Mulder and Scully. Chris Carter, the creator, fought so hard against making them romantic, but the joke is on him for a lot of reasons, like (1) he cast David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, who have more chemistry than anyone else on this sad little planet and who like kissing for fun, (2) nothing is more romantic than an intellectual partnership between equals based on trust and mutual respect, and (3) the more he refused to define their relationship with words, the more powerful he inadvertently made it, because, again, the most important things are too big for words. it’s like the show respects Mulder and Scully’s connection too much to try to explain it.
The X-Files made me realize how sick I am of bickering on TV. a lot of shows want us to think that love looks like a little boy pulling a girl’s hair on the playground. but Mulder and Scully have a friendship between adults. they like each other. I know I literally just went on about how their relationship is so powerful it transcends the bounds of fiction etc., but it’s not stuffy. there’s a fun little kernel of madness and codependence at the center of their relationship, which I love because I love watching women in fiction pick their own poison. and Scully’s is Mulder. they’re a little bit mutually destructive with each other, but they’re even more self-destructive on their own. it’s compelling.
shifting to a different corner of my conspiracy board. Mulder and Scully are as great as they are because The X-Files understands exactly where they fit in the world of the show and what brings them together: their shared integrity in the face of the FBI’s manipulation. The X-Files is really about the abuses committed by the government; the villains are men in suits who would do anything to hold on to the power they feel slipping away. this show can go hard when it wants to. I can’t and don’t want to absolve it for being written and directed almost exclusively by white men, which comes through in all kinds of toxic ways. but as far as cop shows go its perspective on the world holds up impressively well—better than shows that are on right now. I can think of a hundred ways The X-Files could have been a better version of itself, but every other show still wants what it has.
even when The X-Files is bad it’s good. sometimes the frustrating things about it only make it more interesting. it’s a show that draws you in; it makes you part of the process of interpreting what’s happening and assigning meaning to it. there wasn’t a writers’ room for the writers to communicate with each other (a concept), which means the story can sometimes feel fragmented, but that also gave the show the capacity to look at Mulder and Scully through a lot of different lenses, which ultimately only makes them more vibrant. they can fit into a comedy or a tragedy or a thriller. they can be unbearably sentimental one week (or one scene) and unbearably withholding the next. but that’s real. people are inconsistent. it also makes it possible for the monster-of-the-week episodes to keep getting better and more inventive even as the mythology starts to fall apart. the great standalone episodes are like short stories, and even the worst ones have Mulder and Scully.
I don’t find The X-Files scary in a jump-scare kind of way; it’s cozy, and it’s got a powerful sense of wonder at the the world. but it does get at the creeping horror of realizing the world doesn’t make sense. what makes the story hopeful is that Mulder and Scully keep trying to make sense of it anyway. they tear down everything they thought they knew because the comfort of a lie is less important than the truth. I just love that the little grey men and the UFOs and the tractor beams all look exactly like you’d expect them to, but belief still isn’t easy. it’s not a show about what exactly real-ass aliens might look like. it’s about how the truth can be really simple and really hard to accept at the same time.

Genshin gods and their connection to demonology and mythology
I’m no expert on demonology nor mythology, simply someone that enjoys both and the connection between them and Genshin Impact. I think that Mihoyo did a splendid job on the choices they made when deciding which demons in The Lesser Key of Solomon to use. Anyways, I hope that you enjoy.
Barbatos
Tumblr media
Barbatos in demonology is one of the earls of hell, ruling thirty legions of demons and has four kings as his companions to command his legions. His name seems to derive from Latin 'barbatus', bearded, old man, philosopher. He is the 8th demon in The Lesser Key of Solomon, while Pseudomonarchia Daemonum listed him as the 6th demon.
So far it does not really have anything to do with Genshin, except maybe the fact that Barbatos refers to Morax as old man when his name means old man, so that’s a little ironic.
Barbatos is very known for his command over archery, which is why Barbatos in Genshin uses a bow.
Alright, here is the fun part, Barbatos, unlike some of the other demons in The Lesser Key of Solomon, doesn’t have anything to do with foreign gods. Foreign gods in this case refers to gods not belonging to the Abrahamic religions.
In fact, Barbatos is a fallen angel and was once of the order of the virtues of heaven. This is a delicious piece of irony, given that Barbatos’ godly form greatly resembles an angel.
Barbatos takes upon the name ‘Venti’ as a mortal. The name Venti is most likely Latin instead of Italian. Venti in Latin means wind, and can either refer to the entirety of the four wind gods that serve Aiolos, the Roman Lord of the Winds, whose Greek counterpart is Aeolus or a specific type of wind spirit in Roman mythology, whose Greek counterpart is known as Anemoi Thuellai. The wind spirits are violent storm winds, sons of the monstrous hurricane-giant Typhoeus and were kept locked up in Aiolos’ floating fortress.
The four wind gods that served Aiolos are Aquilo, the north wind, Favonius, the west wind, Notus, the south wind, and Vulturnus, the east wind. Their greek counterparts are Boreas, Zephyrus, Notus and Eurus respectively. I brought this up because of the Knights of Favonius.
Another of the four winds gods appear in Genshin, although this time with a Greek name. Andrius, the Wolf of the North, is also known as Lupus Boreas. Lupus is the Latin term for wolf while Boreas, as stated above, is the Greek god of the north wind. In conclusion, the name Lupus Boreas itself more or less means Wolf of the North.
Morax
Tumblr media
Morax in demonology is one of the presidents of hell, ruling thirty legions of demons. His name seems to come from Latin 'morax', that delays, that stops. He is the 21st demon in The Lesser Key of Solomon.
So far, similarly to Barbatos, the only thing that has anything to do with Genshin is his name, mostly because rock is the most likely to be able to endure time.
Morax appears as a great bull with the face of a man, which is interesting in a Chinese context, as Liyue is based on Ancient China. In the Chinese zodiac, an ox has a fixed element, which is earth. The Chinese zodiac sign Ox is disciplined and orderly in his or her thoughts and actions. They are known for the strength of body, mind, and character, and tend to be very conservative. They do well in business, not because of ingenious inventions or clever self-promotion, but by hard work and long hours. Sometimes considered old-fashioned, Chinese Oxen are well-known for their moral fiber. They live by a code that may no longer be popular, but they have a clear sense of what is right and wrong. While others may see them as slow and plodding, inside, they are romantics who want to look at the world as it once was (or at least how they know it was).
This makes the ox a very fitting animal for the Morax we know in Genshin.
Furthermore, another belief for his name is the Egyptian goddess Maat, the goddess of truth, balance, order, harmony, law, morality, and justice. This makes it fitting for the Morax in Genshin in my opinion.
Alright, back to demonology, Morax teaches Astronomy and all other liberal sciences, and gives good and wise familiars that know the virtues of all herbs and precious stones. The precious stones part is fitting for the Morax in Genshin but also the fact that Morax in demonology likes to teach, just like the Morax in Genshin.
Morax descends upon Liyue as a dragon. Dragons in East Asian mythology is commonly associated with good luck, propitiousness, power, and nobleness. In ancient times, only emperors were allowed to use a dragon as a symbol. This is probably used to further reaffirm Morax’s position as the highest of the adepti. The colours used in Morax’s dragon form are simple, brown for the earth and gold for the gold that flows in his veins. Even if he did not create Mora, it is typically said that immortals bleed gold, which is commonly known as ichor.
“The Dragon is believed by the Chinese to present power and valiancy, excellence and determination, dignity and divinity. A dragon is believed to have the powers to overcome obstacles to see success. He is spirited, confident, enthusiastic, intelligent and determined.”
As a mortal, Morax takes the name ‘Zhongli’. Chinese names are a bit more difficult to decipher, compared to Latin names since they depend more of the characters used to make up the name as compared to just the sound of the name. Different characters in Chinese could make the exact same sound but mean very different things. Zhongli’s name in Chinese characters is 钟离, the Zhong in his name means clock while the Li in his name means leave. A interpretation of his name would be off the clock, symbolising his retirement.
His name is likely from a figure in Chinese mythology, 锺离权, Zhongli Quan, one of  the Baxian, the Eight Immortals of Daoism. Zhongli Quan is also sometimes known as , 汉锺离, Han Zhongli because he is said to have lived during the Han dynasty. In legend, he wields a large fan which can resurrect the dead and transform stones into silver or gold. The Zhong in his name is actually the same Zhong used in Genshin’s Zhong but in traditional Chinese as opposed to the simplified Chinese used in Genshin.
Baal
Tumblr media
Baal in demonology is a Duke of Hell, with 66 legions of demons under his command. His name comes from a Canaan and Mesopotamian god, specifically the god of fertility and storms. The Semitic word Baal means lord or master, and the ancient people believed he was in charge of all of nature and humans. He is the 1st demon in The Lesser Key of Solomon.
Baal in Genshin forms herself as a ruler or lord and master of Inazuma. Unlike Barbatos, who is mostly absent or Morax, who descends once a year, Baal seems to be a god that rules with an iron fist, appropriate for someone whose name means lord or master.
Baal in Genshin claims that her ideal is "nearest unto Heaven," calls her body the "noblest and most eminent of all in this world," and sees her reign as eternal which is again, fitting for someone whose name means lord and master.
Baal in demonology is also commonly associated with Satan or at least as his primary assistant. The arrogance shown in Baal in Genshin is therefore fitting, given that Satan was once Lucifer, the most perfect of angels before he rebelled against God and fell to heaven. He too believed that his ideal was the nearest unto Heaven and that his body is the noblest and most eminent of all in this world. Another interesting factor is that Baal in Genshin believes that humans are not deserving of visions, similar to Satan’s reason for his rebellion against God, for he believed that humans did not deserve God’s love or protection.
Baal as a god was believed to be the "giver of life" and mankind was dependent upon him for providing what was necessary to sustain the farms, flocks and herds. Baal was the god of fertility and storms, it is fitting as storms meant lighting and therefore electricity. In Ugaritic and Hebrew, Baal’s epithet as the storm god was He Who Rides on the Clouds.
The question on how a powerful ruling god, similar to Zeus in Greek mythology, became known as a demon is fairly simple.
“According to the Old Testament, after the Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years, they arrived in the fruitful land of Canaan where the prime deity was Baal. Before they entered the Promised Land, the Hebrew people were warned not to worship the pagan gods of Canaan. However, after wandering in the desert for all that time, they weren’t quite sure that their god was the right choice since the Canaanites were living it up on the fertile soil. Many split their allegiance and decided to worship both their god and Baal.”
Many pagan gods were demonised by the Abrahamic religions as the Abrahamic religions did not allow worship of gods that weren't their God. They called it idolatry and deemed it a sin.
Baal’s primary prophet was Jezebel, if you are not familiar with the Abrahamic religions, she is symbolically associated with false prophets. The original Jezebel instituted the worship of Baal and Asherah on a national scale and violently purged the prophets of Yahweh from Israel. Through the centuries, the name Jezebel came to be associated with false prophets. By the early 20th century, it was also associated with fallen or abandoned women. In Christian lore, a comparison to Jezebel suggested that a person was a pagan or an apostate masquerading as a servant of God. By manipulation and seduction, she misled the saints of God into sins of idolatry and sexual immorality. In particular, Christians associated Jezebel with promiscuity. The cosmetics which Jezebel applied before her death also led some Christians to associate makeup with vice.
Personally, given that the records of Jezebel are mostly from Abrahamic religions, I would advise that it be taken with a spoonful of salt. I mentioned Jezebel because she was said to have violently purged the prophets of Yahweh from Israel, similar to how Baal in Genshin purged the vision holders in Inazuma.

I hope this isn’t to vulgar to ask but have you experienced men of every rising sign? More so would you be able to speak on the genitalia of all the eighth house signs in men you’ve encountered? I would like to see if there is any merit in the general depictions of the eighth house when it comes to sex organs
Haha you’re fine my love! I don’t mind being of help!
I personally attract virgo, Sagittarius, Gemini, Scorpio rising men the most. I have had sexual encounters with men of all 12 zodiac signs and I’ve managed to get rising signs for a great deal of them! Sadly I can’t speak broadly on many of the rising signs considering the higher volume of the four I just mentioned being the majority of the ones that come my way.
Aries rising men: in my experience? Sweet, they are very much what you see is what you get types considering their entire chart is a reflection of the natural traits of all 12 zodiac signs in their comfortable houses. Sexually I would say their sexual organs look dark, like literally they have a darker tone then the rest of their body. They aren’t rough sexually but they can be very intense, if I could describe them? I’d say it felt like I was swimming in a pool at night with strobe lights at the bottom. They know how to have sex and it feels good, they are very much so emotionally available during and after. Very violent orgasams and can seem very spiritual during.
Taurus rising men: in my experience? Babies. They can be needy and distant at the same time, very weird mix. They want things at a very specific time and can be hard to compromise with especially sexually. the thing that stood out to me is how fast they ejaculate, and I don’t mean this in a bad way, they are just very easily aroused much like a literal bull. They tend to love foreplay but if you’re too good at it they’ll cum fast. They can be very vibrant and bubbly during sex lots of laughter, but if they’re not laughing they’re usually just super into it lmao. They have very big and long sexual organs. I wouldn’t say thick, I would say more like a long sword in typical sag style. They are very out of tune emotionally during sex so that’s the only downside.
Gemini rising men: in my experience? Sad boys. They got issues and they’re not good at hiding them. They can seem moody, aloof and slightly misunderstood. I can’t peg them sometimes, they seem like they have a mixture of mommy and daddy issues but then they can seem arrogant and self assured at a moments notice. Domination kinks and restriction plague them. I would say the sex is often sensual and deeply attentive in its nature. They want to feel all of it and none of it at the same time. Touch and physical intimacy is the thing they adore the most in sex and I think that’s what makes them so special. They’re really sweet and good natured and you get to see that part of them more freely during sex as contrary to the belief of Capricorn in the 8th these natives are tremendously affectionate and loving during sex. I will say that they get sad or more serious after climax and I have no idea wether Saturn does that or if it’s something deeper. They may be a bit on the smaller side when it comes to sexual organs in most cases but they know how to use it for sure. They are very horny like the goat
Cancer rising men: in my experience? I’ve dealt with some who have cap and others who have aqua in the 8th, for some reason the result is still similar in a way. They can be soooo receptive, they know what you need better than you do. They are present but not overbearing. They feel parental but in a way that feeds the parts of you that felt like they were missing something. I’d say sex always comes with a lesson with them. It’s never just casual sex. They tend to nurture during sex and can be very emotionally deep and connective during. They are definitely the type you spend the night with naturally or hang out with the next few days or unexpectedly end up dating. The sexual organs are usually pretty unique! Some curve, some have like those cute beauty marks on em. They also tend to be well hung.
Leo rising men: in my experience? I found them to be distant, perplexing and heavy. They seem a bit disengaged but can have moments of affectionate behavior and romantic burst that come from nowhere. Sexually though they can be passive, they feel real wet and liquidy I dunno how to describe it. Sex with them just feels very moist and like there’s a lot of fluids everywhere but idk it doesn’t feel like a bad thing. They precum a lot and can be very submissive. They are not horny per say? They are more on the “if you wanna” side of things. So Neptune and Jupiter rule Pisces so as you can already imagine these men tend to be packing some heat. They sorta dunno how to use it though? For some reason they have a very clumsy way of having sex as if they’ve never done it before? They don’t really have boundaries either so you’ll need to make sure to ask them if they’re okay cause a lot of the time they might not be.
Virgo rising men: in my experience? I’m gonna try and not be biased. These men are very ethereal. They are very quiet and genuine. They have this very honest and blunt way about doing and saying things. They carry a lot of pain though and you can see it in their eyes which I will say they have very intense eyes. Sexually? They are VERY passionate. They treat sex like a sport but not a fun sport, rather they treat it like a life or death ring match. They definitely pack a punch and will rock your shit. They can be deeply sensitive and intimate all the while being completely in tune with every part of you during sex in such a way that’ll make you feel like you’re freefalling. The genitals in my experience are veiny, very masculine in the way they look. Every time I see a guy with a Virgo rising it never ceases to amaze me how rough and aggressive their penis are. They are also very intense ejaculators and can be very big on equal ejaculation(my pleasure is your pleasure theme) contrary to the Aries myth, they can go and go and go for hours without cumming so as a warning please try and build your stamina
Libra rising men: in my experience? Confused? They can seem like they’re waiting for something to start but also won’t do anything to make something start. They can seem aggressive but are secretly hoping you make the first move. They are very touchy and very adorable in their being but they definitely can be the types to let the other person take the lead. One thing I’ve always liked about libra rising men is their cute butts and their charming way of seducing you without oversexualizing the situation. Sexually they are AMAZING Jesus. Once you get them going they will really run rampant. They are very sensual and they love slow touching and intimacy. They are emotionally present and can have a personality change during sex, they turn into a whole other Individual. A warning I will say is that they get very caught up in the moment and you’ll have to snap them out of it from time to time if they’re to caught up in the pleasure. They’re sexual organs like most fixed signs is pretty thick and heavy. In my experience the length is normal but the girth is what will really kill yah.
Scorpio rising men: in my experience? Fuck these guys are HOT. They don’t have to try very hard either which is annoying, they literally just exude this strong, mysterious and emotionally unavailable energy that makes you want to strip right in front of them. Are they into you? Do they care? Are you more into it then them? Who knows and they probably won’t tell you. They can be very manipulative and tend to gaslight(and I’m not joking about this nor am I jokingly using the term) they tend to have mental detachments from their emotions which can give them sociopath like tendecies. Sexually they are curious, very control oriented. They want to watch you go crazy so most times they leave you in charge. Riding is one of their favorite positions because they get to see you fein for them. They are senstive to your feelings during sex but don’t mistake this for them being emotionally invested in you, the Gemini in their 8th house is playing whatever role gets you to respond in the way they desire. They are very loving nonetheless when they do truly care for you. The sexual organs are usually very thick. I think they’re the ones who invented the word chode. The penis tends to be girthy and also has a pretty good length to it, and they definitely know how to work it.
Sagittarius rising men: in my experience? These guys are some fucking heartthrobs! I hate to say it but man they are so rugged and masculine you can’t help but love their boyish nature. They are definitely obnoxious, loud and ridiculously dense when it comes to reading the room. What makes them so hot though is how reckless they are with all things. They don’t give a shit. Sexually though? Emotions run HIGH they tend to be very drawn to feminine energy. A lot of guys like this adore feminity in all forms be it in men or women. If you have that feminine glow to you, they’ll eat you up. They tend to have a strong desire to impregnate and the idea of being connected and having that sort of emotional receptivity with the person their fucking drives them wild. They are very intense sexually and can be very overwhelming the first few times mainly because adjusting to them is impossible, you never know what emotional spectrum you’ll get. Their sexual organs aren’t that big, sometimes they can be girthy but most times long and or average size tends to be what I see more. Are they good at using it? Yeah, you’ll fall asleep right after trust me.
Capricorn rising men: in my experience? They are very unassuming. They are so fucking calm, so fucking unmoved and so fucking ahead of you every time. They don’t rush things and can really make you feel so comfortable with how respectful and real they are. They have a very boy next door or upstairs neighbor vibe to them. Sleeping with them feels naughty sometimes other times it feels like it was a long build up. Sexually they are exhibitionist. They definitely will fill the hell out of you with their more modest persona at first. They want to enjoy all parts of your body but they also want the show to be about them. They want to hear you want them, how good they make you feel, they want it to feel like a performance where the crowd is watching. And dare I say they are constantly mastering their art, sex gets better and better and better with them. There’s never a dull moment and every time they have sex with you it gets more personal, more intense, more all consuming. They have a high libido and they are practically insatiable. They are selfish but I will say this, if you can’t get them off they definitely will do it themselves. Their sexual organs are often brighter than the other parts of their body. Very pretty too look at and also a bit on the hairy side.
Aquarius rising men: In my experience? They can seem really standoffish and for a good reason. They tend not to like ignorance and the more they see you trying hard to relate to them the less they’ll acknowledge you. They like the idea of someone who is down for them but not the idea of someone who is groveling, don’t and I mean don’t by any means act like a fan. They tend to run hot and cold for ever even if they like you. Sexually they can be meticulously planning the whole thing. The meet up, the positions, the foreplay all of it. They tend to need warnining or to know both parties had time to clean up. They’re not ones for sex on the fly or random sex as it can lead to a lot of unnecessary accidents. They’re attentive and very much the types to make you feel like you’re clay and you’re being sculpted into something magnificent. Their amazing at sex, they are like gallileo, or Mozart when it comes to the act. They move around your body like a serpent, then a leaf in the wind, than rain touching your skin. They are more focused on your pleasure than theirs so orgasms/reaching climax can be tough for them. The sexual organs are pretty small or average in most cases. If mars/Jupiter or Neptune/Uranus is there that augments things.
Pisces rising men: In my experience? They are definitely ass men. Everything revolves around booty. They are definitely soft and very sweet, but they have a sweetness to them that is fake. The real them is far more serious and self aware then they give off. They know what they’re doing and they know what you’re doing, so don’t ever be fooled by the veil they put up. They’re incredible receptive and sensitive and a lot of their internal feelings come out at some point just not at the moment it needs to. Sexually they can very hotel sex types. Like I don’t know how to really explain it and it’s so opposite of what you would expect of libra but they are very impersonal people. Like sex can feel very romantic and as if they are treating you like a significant other but something about it is detached, far away and unavailable. They are good at creating the engagement aspect of sex but can fall short at the emotional part which is semi-strange considering what you’ll get up to that point. They are very experienced but at the same time they may need to be taught to connect a little deeper or to open up more. They have very soft and gentle sexual styles that will still make you feel cared for but sometimes in the back of it all you’ll still feel that “I’m fucking a stranger” vibe. Their sexual organs tend to be very beautiful, nice length and nice width. They’ll definitely be a lot better at the sex part once you guys are committed though.
So obviously this is a general word of mouth and does not take into account planets being in the 8th house nor does it mention decans which can greatly alter much of what I’ve said. And honestly you can apply the decan rule here if you’d like! Simply use the decan lord so if they’re a third decan Virgo rising and have Aries in the third decan in their 8th house which is Aries/Sagittarius: you would mix those interpretations. Anyways hope this helps love.

Favorite character: LAN WANGJI and WEI WUXIAN!!! lwj because he unlocked a new part of my brain and wwx because he's the most character ever. but they tie with jin ling today because I love jin ling he's my boy he's very very young and learning how to live and his flaws are endlessly endearing
Second favorite character: wen ning and wen qing! AND lan qiren because you know what I love that old man. he's made a lot mistakes but I think he does his best and he loves his nephews
Least favorite character: su she. why are you even here su she. ugh. also jin guanshan for being an asshole and treating women like shit and pressuring jyl to marry his son and manipulating jc and oh yeah. murdering thousands of innocent war prisoners for sport. fucker
The character I’m most like: wen ning but not as cool. also jyl.
Favorite pairing: well naturally it's the one I made a whole new tag for do I even need to say it. invented love and trust and intimacy and tenderness and growth and support and have that kickass red/black and white/blue color scheme and complement each other in everything they do and inspire each other to be better people...
Least favorite pairing: any incest or age gap one obviously (including lxc and jc, what are you ON) but also xxc/xy truly does make me ill. I also hate wq/jc but there aren't many (implied canon) pairings that inspire such revulstion in me as xxc and the man who manipulated him into murdering both innocent people and his best friend/beloved and mocked him for his ideals and was implied to be in a relationship w him under false pretenses. god. there are only a handful of good couples in this show anyway that aren't incredibly obscure and with people who actually meet (like uhhh wang/xian good, yang/qing good, song/xiao good, mm and her husband good...sang/cheng is okay I guess but it's not much in canon...lxc and nmj fine...yeah not a lot. oh shit I forgot the straights. jyl and jzx I do like)
Favorite moment: hard to say. not a lot beats the staircase confession scene. I think I've mentioned this, but I definitely saw it as a full romantic confession scene as well. beautiful beautiful coming together of the relationship, and resolution of one of the issues it's had since the beginning (lwj not having wwx's back in a way he really needs him to) the callback to wwx's own words the elevation of concepts and themes from the original work into an adaptation. brilliant. also I have to say the snow scene in 43 (?) was just gorgeous visually and so cathartic emotionally and the domesticity in that scene was so much and you can really tell how wwx is slowly healing from the past and how having lwj's support and love is so good for him and he's grappling with his grief and what's happened to him and what he's done and lost but he's not doing it alone! even if they haven't like said it out loud... scream
Rating out of 10: 9.5/10. I had to split this section up lmao
treat your girls better. plot's kind of a mess. the effects were really quite bad, though they didn't ruin the scene for me. qishan lava pits and the puppets were a bit on the worse side. lwj should have had more and bigger scars on his back and he should have been allowed to get bloody and dirty which is something that'll always bother me. I also wanted more scenes with him! I think the show didn't want to make him do too much outside of his novel self which is a shame because he could have used just a little more personality and color. the pathos of some scenes are overdone - like when the kids reunite after LP massacre. I was upset too but jyl stood there and cried for way too long imo. also I have a bit of an issue with the body diversity for the leads of this show as well (most shows do this, here in the US as well, so I'm not criticizing cql in particular) but the fans heaping praise on the actors for being literally underfed is so disturbing. (I'm looking at you, blog who's liking my shit with a title like "lwj tiny waist appreciation zone" sit down and think maybe)
but as a show I just think it's an absolute triumph. I do think it had respect for the source material (see the callbacks and references a novel fan would get) but wanted to make the story its own. I thought the way the romance was written into the narrative even while being censored was legitimately masterful, the cinematography had some really stunning shots, the character relationships and arcs are deeply satisfying and complex and tragic and hopeful, the music was excellent and integrated well into the story, most of the acting was incredible (special shoutout to zzj, xz, wzc, and wyb for playing jgy, wwx, jc, and lwj SO well my god), there was chemistry between the leads and between pretty much all major characters, the flashback structure is unique and compelling, and despite the overuse of cgi in some establishing shots I thought the sets for unclean realm, cloud recesses, and lotus pier felt both lived in/homey and fantastical. I said some of the emotional scenes are overdone but when they aren't, they're the kind of scenes that you think about for months. the emotional storytelling is incredible and the character work my god the jiang family alone...there's so much there to dig into
thank you penta! in terms of adaptations I just find it so fascinating as well

ok but like if your partner/s.o. isnt your friend.... something kinda wrong there.
a lot of people don’t care about having the base of friendship fskdlhfslkdflks i don’t get any of it, people and their romance weird me out. i wear a tinfoil hat, i can 584959034509345903% believe that romantic love was invented to manipulate women, or at the least the portrayal of romance and how throughout the ages it has been this pinnacle of hope and unconditional thing that you would do anything for. but romantic love as we know it now should have the basis of friendship because there’s no other way to have a healthy connection with someone if you don’t see them as their own individual instead of only in relation to you
