Nora: Man! The food in Dungeon Meshi Looks so good!
Nora: ...
Nora: Hey Renshi~
Ren: No.
Nora: *Dressed as Chilchuck* I don't think you understand the situation you're in.
Pyrrha: *Dressed as Laios* Wait, What?
Jaune: *Dressed as Marcille* ... Hey-
Nora: Healer.
Jaune: I don't want to be siloed into-
Pyrrha: Inexperienced in fighting compared to the rest of us, but you try your best!
Jaune: BUt I have armor and a sword-
Ren: You fear your lack of skill makes you a hinderance and try to make up for that fact by doing things that are dangerous or stupid that you wouldn't make otherwise.
Jaune: ...
Jaune: *Sigh* Fine. I'm Marcille.
Nora: So what do you say Renny!
Ren: ...alright. Okay. I'll go along with this.
Nora: YES!

The formal dan system of kyudo ranking, in the eyes of Shinobu's father, was outdated. An overreliance on spiritualism kept otherwise capable practitioners stuck at lower ranks, while old men with bodies far too frail to keep up rested upon their laurels in the high ranks. Unfortunately, the All Nippon Kyudo Federation still held a great deal of institutional power, and their rules and regulations needed obeying, regardless of one's personal opinion. In order to be a qualified owner of a dojo, especially one with the history of the Yaguchi Dojo, a person would need to attain the rank of renshi, which itself required being a 5-dan.
To that end, Shinobu had jumped through the Federations' inane hoops, gaining rank after rank in pursuit of eligibility. As the dojo's heir, it would be unbecoming of them to falter or stagnate, and though a higher rank held no interest for Shinobu, they needed to be prepared to inherit the dojo whenever that day came. She found the examinations rather unpleasant, elderly fools fawning over her for her sense of filial piety, and her dedication towards carrying a traditional art into the future.
At least there was no further need to attend after reaching her desired ranks. Of course, the additional workload hardly ended there, for once she'd reached her instructor's rank, it was ethically permissible for Shinobu to teach. Though the Yaguchi Dojo had few students besides herself, her father's relationships with other members of the community often led to others taking advantage of the dojo's amenities, or dropping by for short-term instruction. Rather troublesome.
Today was such a day, with Shinobu's father having ordered them to be a gracious host towards a young woman coming to visit from a nearby high school. The specifics weren't conveyed to her - they seldom were - but that mattered little, she supposed. She would arrive, be shown to the dojo, and allowed to practice as she liked. If instruction was required, or desired, Shinobu would make their assessments. Working with other people was hardly her strength, but if it was necessary in her role as the dojo's heir, so be it.
Still, if her father was to leave for the day, entrusting the matter to her, Shinobu would dress as she liked, rather than the drab neutral-colored samue, or training wear, with face bare and hair tied back. Instead, she greeted the young woman at the large estate's front gate in a black kimono, decorated with red spider lilies, dark eyeliner encircling her eyes, a red color painted over her lips, and her hair down with earrings dangling at either side. Her suits and menswear were unsuited to archery, but a kimono maintained the traditional aesthetic and wasn't unacceptable in exhibitions.
"Good afternoon. You must be Miss Mitsuzuri." As her father had said, they were likely quite close in age. "My name is Shinobu Yaguchi. I'm this dojo's heir, and I'll accompany you today." Beyond that, there was little to say about herself. "Please watch your step on the pathway. It's uneven, and it would be a waste to have come here were you to trip and injure yourself." After setting the gate to close, Shinobu turned, walking along the stones in zori sandals in practiced stride without issue. "The dojo is on the other side of the estate, but it isn't a long walk." From their position by the gate, the winding stone path passed a large koi pond and a picturesque zen garden, with the long dojo building pressed against the far end of the estate's walls.

Title: "The Apothecary Diaries"
In a great nation located in the center of the continent, there was a daughter in the imperial harem where the emperor's consorts resided. Her name was Maomao.
Originally working as an apothecary in the pleasure district, she now toils as a servant in the imperial harem. One day, Maomao learns that all the emperor's sons are short-lived. Both of the current imperial heirs are gradually weakening due to illness.
Intrigued, Maomao starts investigating the cause, almost dismissively rejecting the idea of curses. Renshi, a handsome eunuch, assigns Maomao the role of tasting poisons for the emperor's favored consorts.
Although she has no interest in people, Maomao's abnormal obsession with poisons and medicines, coupled with rumors and incidents involving the apothecary from the pleasure district, create a series of entanglements. The world of beautiful roses has thorns, the women's quarters are filled with poison, and rumors and conspiracies abound.
Despite being burdened with increasingly troublesome tasks by Renshi, Maomao continues to carry out her duties. The exceptional poison enthusiast roams the imperial harem once again today.

Tsurune Archery Classroom
Tumblr media
So KyoAni has posted a Q&A with trivia about Japanese archery to the official Twitter account of the Tsurune anime in order to promote the movie, and I took the liberty to translate it. Please feel free to message me about possible corrections.
Q.: What is “tsurune”?
Narumiya Minato (CV. Uemura Yuuto): It’s the sound that the string makes as it hits the bow when an arrow is released. Even if it’s the same person shooting, the sound changes depending on their feelings and the situation at hand. The more skilled a person is, the cooler a sound they can produce.
Q.: What’s “target panic”?
Takehaya Seiya (CV. Ichikawa Aoi): Also called “archer’s disorder”, it’s the tendency of one’s hand to release the arrow on its own by accident when they’re holding the bow into position. It’s quite a problematic habit, and in Minato’s case… well, in the end, he has no choice but to fix it himself, so there’s nothing I can say to support him.
Q.: Is it best if the arrow hits the center of the target?
Yamanouchi Ryouhei (CV. Suzuki Ryouta): Even if it’s not in the center of the target, once it hits, you get a point! But it’s because the shooting posture is disturbed that it won’t hit the center, so it’s said that you can’t consider it a “good shot” just for hitting the target. There’s a lot to Japanese archery~!
Q.: How far is the target positioned?
Kisaragi Nanao (CV. Yano Shougo): 28 meters for close-distance targets! As for the reason behind such an odd number, it’s said that, in the past, back when bows were used as weapons, this would’ve been the distance between your party and the enemy party. Well, the theories vary, though!
Q.: What are you forbidden to do in an archery dojo?
Onogi Kaito (CV. Ishikawa Kaito): An archery dojo is a place for “training”. There’s lots of rules and detailed etiquette in order to maintain safety. For example, it’s outrageous to enter with shoes on!
Q.: What’s the “Shahou Hassetsu”?
Takigawa Masaki (CV. Asanuma Shintarou): Hard to explain what it is in one sentence, but well, I guess one should keep in mind, first of all, that it refers to the sequence of movements we have to perform from the moment we position our bows till we release the arrows. That’s the foundation of Japanese archery, which was created and polished by our predecessors, so it’s the most important of all.
Q.: Are the arrows different for each person?
Minato: People pick their archery equipment in accordance to their height, physique and skill. I use aluminum arrows but Masa-san uses bamboo arrows. There are many other types of arrows, even ones with actual black eager feathers on them.
Q.: What’s a “team competition”?
Seiya: It’s a match where a certain number of people lines up and draws the bow to compete against the same number of people.
For five-people teams, we call the first person the “oomae”, the second, “niteki”, the third, “naka”, the fourth, “yonteki” and the last, “ochi”. The names differ depending on the place and school, though.
Each of us has a role, so we do our best together in aiming for the best shots.
Q.: What are the “ranks” and “dan” titles of Japanese archery?
Fujiwara Shuu (CV. Ono Kenshou): I guess they’re something like a classification of the abilities related to Japanese archery that you can get through an examination. There are three titles - Renshi, Kyoushi and Hanshi - and mine and Minato’s mentor, Saionji-sensei, holds the title of “seventh-dan Kyoushi”.
Q.: What’s “Princess Cheer”?
Sase Daigo (CV. Miyazaki Yuu): It’s a very popular five-people idol group! Above all, the center, Noririn, has an exceptional sense for everything, like dancing, singing and talking, so she’s been shining ever since her debut - actually, she’s been shining even back when she was an indie artist and lighting up the way for me… She’s a very popular idol but only with the people who know about her at the moment, yet there’s something to keep an eye for in the way she improves her skills without sparing any efforts and I’ve been encouraged by that many times, so I don’t know how many times I’ve thought things like “I’m glad I met Noririn” or “I’m glad Noririn decided to become an idol”! No matter how many hundreds of people she shakes hands with at meet-and-greets, she never shows any signs of being tired, and even if you go back into the line over and over again, Noririn welcomes you with her smile unchanged!!!!
Q.: How do you cheer during a match?
Nanao: If it’s baseball, people will shout things like, “Go for it!”, but in Japanese archery, cheering aloud is generally not good. Archery matches aren’t just about winning or losing, that’s why. When you hit the target, the people sitting on the stands will say, “Good one!”. Unique, ain’t it?
Q.: What’s a “kaichuu”?
Minato: It’s when all of your arrows hit the target. It’s not an easy feat to pull, so when someone manages to achieve a kaichuu, the viewers will show respect by applauding them.
Q.: What does “shoot correctly, hit correctly” mean?
Masaki: That’s a difficult question. It means that “a correct shot is sure to hit the target”, but it’s not as easy as it sounds. It’s a story with no end, which begins when you mature as an archer and perform “correct shooting” for the first time.
Well, that’s what mastering archery is about. We’ve got no choice but to keep studying hard every day, so let’s do our best, yeah?

Note
I had a whisper of an idea once of "Jin Guangshan sends Meng Shi to Lan Qiren one night as a joke but she's Qiren's fated one so zip forward and Lan Yao is standing with his cousins to greet the new class of students" (with a side of Madame Lan is very wise and respected and gives great advice and has four more kids) I didn't know really where to go with it tho
oooooh, RenShi would be a great pairing. unlike jin guangshan, lan qiren would greatly appreciate that not only is meng shi very educated, she's mostly self-educated, which means a good head for learning and a desire to learn. imagine that scene from beauty and the beast where he gifts her the entire library. i'm not sure where to go with it from there either, but still, what a good idea.
