Do you think Renée truly loves Bella?

Maybe Bella's poor relationship with Renée affects her own relationship with Renesmee?

Oh, absolutely, Renee loves Bella but she's not a good mother/mother material or has the emotional maturity to be a good parent.

The thing about Renee is, to me at least, she's stuck in the mindset of her very early twenties if not late teens. She cares about other people, but has difficulty empathizing with them, and difficulty seeing beyond herself and her own desires and needs.

She also had Bella on her own very young, had to practically flee town to do so, and is still carrying around the baggage of that.

This leads to her poisoning Bella against her father (Bella's hatred of Forks, insistence that Charlie is boring and awful, terror that the town will talk behind her back, and everything in the first part of Twilight clearly comes from Renee), accidentally putting down Bella (from the way Bella speaks it's very clear that Renee's called her old and boring for years because Bella does things like pay their bills, do their cooking and laundry, and everything Renee's bad at. Now, this is probably in part because Renee deep down knows she should be doing this and is embarrassed that her daughter is doing it for her but also likely does see Bella as Charlie a boring person she doesn't want to be reminded of). It's very clear that what Renee wants out of Bella is more a friend than a daughter and someone she can have fun with, because that's how Renee knows how to connect to people.

That doesn't mean Renee doesn't love Bella, isn't concerned about her, it just means that she forgets that having 0 contact with Bella for months and knowing nothing about her life and not even telling her they moved to Florida is a bad sign for their relationship.

Renee's a case of arrested development for me.

In terms of Renesmee, again, absolutely, 100%, Bella's influenced by what she knows of Renee having raised her. Bella takes a very similar hands-off approach and is proud her three-month old daughter is so self-sufficient. What Bella's primary goals are are to care about her own needs, her own desires, and while she loves her daughter fiercely she's also essentially an object to her and something Bella spends about 0.01% of her time actually thinking about.

As happens with a lot of people, Bella has become her mother (in part, in this case, because Bella's very defensive of Renee in the books and didn't quite have the maturity/hindsight to look back and realize she had a pretty fucked up childhood).

In theory, could a gifted human develop their power in the same way that a musically, artistically, or athletically talented person can better their talent through practice and hardwork?

Benjamin for example, his supernatural ability is manipulating the four elements. Fire, earth, water, and air. As a human, he could only manipulate fire. What if Benjamin was never turned into a vampire and never developed the ability to control the other elements? But he got really good at manipulating fire.

Or Bella. What if she could learn to project her shield as a human? It would be very limited. Maybe she could only partially shield someone else's mind. Maybe she could only shield a couple of other people. She inherited the power from Charlie right? And Renee, revealed in Midnight Sun, has a rudimentary form thought projection. It could be that the projection aspect of Bella's power could've been inherited from Renée. The point being that Bella might've had the ability to project her shield all along.

Who is Renée Dwyer ?

Who is Renée Dwyer ? Bella seems to have a pretty positive opinion of her. She's slightly condescending, and a bit insecure, but overall Bella seems to really love her. However, let's be honest here, Bella is a terrible judge of character, so I wanted to explore her a little.

Most people seem to have one of two views of Renee

A well meaning woman who got pregnant too soon but did her best. Things weren't perfect, but she tried to encourage Bella to try new things.

After all, she seems to really care about Bella. She's frantic when she goes to see her in the hospital in Twilight, they seem to have a good relationship... In fact, Bella doesn't seem to resent her in the least.

She signs up Bella for ballet, and accepts that Bella doesn't like it and lets her drop it, which suggests she respects Bella's opinion.

2. A neglectful woman who shouldn't have gotten custody, emotionally abusive and narcissistic

Why would I think that ? Bella cooks too well for a seventeen year old and seems to have been responsible for paying the bills for a while.

Most egregiously, Bella knows the last words her mom told her dad before leaving. Why, in God's name does she know that ? It screams enmeshment and parentification on Renée's part.

Would Renée really have been miserable if Bella had chosen to accompany her to Florida to be with Phil, or was that mostly in Bella’s head?

That was the thing, Bella didn't know Phil had gotten a permanent position. At the time, the misery was that Renee had to stay with Bella when she could have otherwise been traveling with Phil (as Phil had to travel across the country constantly for games). The Florida thing was a new development in Twilight and what Renee pitches to Bella at the end of the novel: they're now in a permanent place in a sunny state and Bella doesn't have to stay in Forks.

As for what happened... I personally think it's a mix of both.

Bella was with Renee, unable to travel with Phil, and I imagine Renee was acting upset about it. They'd just married, she was a newly wed after many years, and now she can't be with her husband. I'm sure she did drop comments, sigh and stare out the window, and wish it didn't have to be that way.

What she probably didn't intend/didn't say was that Bella should move to Forks so that Renee could ditch her to be with Phil on the road. Going to Forks in Renee's mind was not an option, at all, and it came out of left field for her completely that Bella would do this.

Though... it is worth noting that we see Renee at the beginning of Twilight and while she protests and is upset, she's not as upset as she otherwise could be and not protesting that hard. There's a very token, "Sweetie, why are you doing this? Email me when you get there". But not an extreme insistence that Bella not leave.

Note the offer for Bella to come back didn't happen until Renee was secure in Florida and could stay with Phil and Bella. That was several months later, and happened only after Bella had been hospitalized after a tragic accident after Renee had never told Bella that she was int he process of moving to Florida.

Bella on her end absolutely feels like a third wheel, that she's ruining Renee and Phil's relationship, and that she's only getting in the way of her mother's happiness. And--for all Bella despises herself and doesn't see how others value her, I don't think she was entirely off the money either.

Renee clearly wasn't happy at Bella going to Charlie, and absolutely wanted Bella to live with her in Florida and loved having her come to visit later in Eclipse, but it's telling how little we see of her throughout the series and that she's either absent entirely or sending Bella panicked emails that don't actually ask Bella for any useful information/how her day was or what's happening in Forks.

Bella doesn't even tell her mother she had a boyfriend, Renee didn't find out until she was visiting in the hospital and spots Edward there and goes "oh, shit, she's not going to live with me huh".

Renee loves her daughter but one of the fascinating things about the series, to me, is how well it portrays that Renee, while far from the world's worst mother, wasn't really mother material and never really seemed to mentally mature beyond her early twenties.

How is Renee related to Renata?

I don't think she actually is in canon but BOY would that make things more interesting!!

Imagine Bella being part of the family that Luca looks after, that Renata and Makenna came from?! Maybe she's the Chosen One of this generation but she doesn't understand and thinks this other vampire is like, stalking and hunting her and it's really just her great-x-times-over grand uncle wanting to give her the gift of immortality.

Unfortunately between Alice and Edward's gifts the Cullens would figure this out in about two seconds so that would suck all the drama out of it, so maybe it goes down during New Moon. Or!! Maybe Renee sends Bella to live with Charlie because she knows Great Uncle Luca wants her for his legion of the undead and Renee thinks Bella will be harder to find if she isn't with her AND Charlie told her the wolf shifter stories Billy and Harry told him and she thought, hey maybe it's true.

So maybe this goes down in New Moon. She's got Victoria genuinely out to get her, and then she's got Luca trying to get through Victoria and the pack to offer her eternal life.

Her "good with weird" stance and comfort around vampires might make more sense if she's been lowkey watched by Great Uncle Vampire for her whole life. And it would mean Renee ACTUALLY TOTALLY KNOWS EVERYTHING.
