I want people to understand this, not every person who is blind or can’t read uses a screen reader. Some people don’t use them. Some people rely on other people to read for them, some people rely on magnifying apps. Some people just avoid the internet. There are multiple reasons for this, some people don’t like screen readers. Some people don’t find them helpful. There are so many reasons someone doesn’t use a screen reader.
I know someone with alexia who doesn’t use a screen reader because she doesn’t like them. She depends on other people, and she’s happy with that. That’s great!

When I was a kid, I didn't read. One of my learning disabilities is reading, and it was really difficult for me to make sense of words. They gave me as much extra help in school as they could, but it didn't really do anything. I was several grades behind everybody else, and tbh, I was probably halfway illiterate by the time I was ten, but I honestly can't remember.
And then my older sister brought Sandry's Book home from the library as an audiobook. This was in 2008, when audiobooks were a lot less common than they are now. It was on a CD and I remember sitting in my room listening to it, and feeling my chest swell from joy and excitement.
It was life-changing. I was enthralled by the story of these four kids. I read the physical book along with it, and finally, finally, reading made sense. I could finally match up the sounds I heard with the words I saw, and it clicked in a way it never had before.
I taught myself to read from Tammy's books. The first book I ever read cover to cover of my own accord was Magic Steps. The very first piece of fanfiction I wrote was on loose-leaf paper for Tamora Pierce.
As a bullied kid, it was clear I was unwanted everywhere I went. But in Tammy's books? Those four were unwanted too. They were hurt and angry but they often chose to be kind, even when it was hard. They stood up for what they believed in even if nobody else did.
These books changed my life in ways I can't express. I'm not sure I would love reading as much as I do if I hadn't been given her books. If I didn't read, I definitely wouldn't write.
Even if the books aren't complicated technical writing-wise, and the world-building doesn't always line up, they will forever hold a special place in my heart. I wouldn't be who I am without them.

BIONIC READING is so fucking cool
🎊HELLO HELLO🎊 I was shoving all my saved tabs into folders so my desktop wouldn’t be such a fucking mess and it has come to my attention that the bionic reader website I’ve had saved for a while now lets you paste text, upload files, and link websites to convert to bionic text!!! For those who don’t know what bionic reading is, it essentially bolds the portion of words that your brain needs to know what the word is, which increases reading speed and efficiency! The remaining word is filled in in your brain, so you’re spending less time trying to process an entire word. This is especially huge for people who have reading disorders and other neurodivergencies! I’ve never been formally tested for dyslexia, but I have ADHD and struggle immensely with reading text, especially on a screen, so any difficulty with reading often results in distraction. The first time I tried bionic reading, I was literally in awe because not only was I not spending excess time getting through each line, I actually processed the information I was reading. The fact that this is now accessible to anyone with an internet connection genuinely makes me cry happy tears.
AND THERE’S AN APP! I get to read Wikipedia articles on my phone with dark mode AND bionic text! I don’t have to choose! Even if you don’t struggle with reading, please consider trying this out—it improves efficiency for everyone—so bionic reading is shown support and becomes more accessible and normalized! It’s so important for our community to have access to tools that help us navigate the world, and this is a huge step in the right direction. I’m so grateful to live in a time where this exists.
HERE is the site!
HERE is the app link!
P.s. You can copy+paste bionic text on Tumblr! Please use this on your long textposts!

Howdy! As a dyslexic person, you can use typing quirks. A typing quirk is something like this:
"Th!s !s a typ!ng qu!rk"
I'm not gonna stop you from having fun with them. Make sure to create a translation though so people like me can read it! If you're texting someone that has a reading disability and they ask you to drop the typing quirk so they can understand you, please do. We're not trying to be mean. We just want to know what you're saying with less struggle ❤

In case it helps anyone, I just discovered this digital library called Bookshare (link to the about page).
Adapted from the wiki page: Bookshare is an online library of accessible ebooks for people with print disabilities. It provides books in various customisable formats meant to make reading more accessible to folks with visual impairment, dyslexia, cerebral palsy, etc. so they can read in whatever way works best for them.
It's available internationally, and is free of cost for qualifying US students and organisations (like schools), while qualifying non-US students and organisations need to pay a low membership fee. (link to page on membership costs).
Here's the page on who qualifies.

Do I like books:
yes, I love them, I collect them and read them painfully slowly (and at high cognitive cost) because of a disability that literally means I have to read every word as though I’ve never seen it before. It feels like rusty gears slowly crunching up all my energy. The last time I read a book, I was weirdly sleepy the entire duration of the reading (like it took me a couple weeks and I was actually sleepy for the latter 2/3 of that time) when I finished the book, I was back to normal within a few days. This was both heartbreaking and incredibly validating of my experience.

arguing with zionists is fucking worthless bc they only choose to acknowledge every fifth word you say, i told my sister "as a person of jewish descend i think its disgusting that israel is wants to associate all jewish people with its actions and they dont speak for jewish people, they speak for european colonizers" and she said "so you're saying all jewish people are european colonizers" no bitch, thats a whole different sentence, what the fuck are you talking abt
EDIT:
since some people are hung up on that part, no i didnt use my jewish descent against my sister, she used hers against me and i reminded her that im just as much of jewish descent as she is. this made sense to me from context as i was making the post, but in hindsight it obviously doesn't so thats my bad
also for all that u guys knew she couldve been my adoptive sister or stepsister or hals sister (which she is but we share the jewish descent)

tumblr users will have the most inaccessible, unreadable, low contrast, flashing carrd you can possibly imagine, with a dni full of insider acronyms with no translation and numerous link buttons labelled with cryptic captions, and then go ahead and put “ableists dni and kys!” on that carrd

love when men cry about body hair bc "it's hygiene" and yet 15% of cis men leave the bathroom without washing their hands at all and an additional 35% only just wet their hands without using soap. that is nearly half of all men. that means statistically you have probably shaken hands with or been in direct contact with one of these people.
love when men say that women "only want money" when it turns out that even in equal-earning homes, women are actually adding caregiver burdens and housework from previous years, whereas men have been expanding leisure time and hobbies. in equal-earning households, men spend an average of 3.5 hours extra in leisure time per week, which is 182 hours per year - a little over a week of paid vacation time that the other partner does not receive. kinda sounds like he wants her money.
love that men have decided women are frail and weak and annoying when we scream in surprise but it turns out it's actually women who are more reliable in an emergency because men need to be convinced to actually take action and respond to the threat. like, actually, for-real: men experience such a strong sense of pride about their pre-supposed abilities that it gets them and their families killed. they are so used to dismissing women that it literally kills them.
love it. told my father this and he said there's lies, damned lies, and statistics. a year ago i tried to get him to evacuate the house during a flash flood. he ignored me and got injured. he has told me, laughing, that he never washes his hands. he has said in the last week that women are just happier when we're cooking or cleaning.
maybe i'm overly nostalgic. but it didn't used to feel so fucking bleak. it used to feel like at least a little shameful to consider women to be sheep. it just feels like the earth is round and we are still having conversations about it being flat - except these conversations are about the most obvious forms of patriarchy. like, we know about this stuff. we've known since well before the 50's.
recently andrew tate tried to justify cheating on his partner as being the "male prerogative." i don't know what the prerogative for the rest of us would be. just sitting at home, watching the slow erosion of our humanity.
#writeblr#warm up#ps edited so it is more clear where “half” of men is coming from:#15% literally don't even touch water#an ADDITIONAL 35% ''wash'' by just running their hands under water WITHOUT SOAP#15+35 =50%#like that is not washing ur hands. go back and use soap#btw the numbers for women are 4% never washing and 15% ''just water''#which is still gross but like. sooo much better yikes#ps i know we're all gay on this site but watching ppl ''correct'' my math on this has been wild#i have a learning disability im genuinely bad at math so i check EVERY time someone corrects me#but no they're just confidently wrong.....#182 hours is a week babes. 182/24 (number of hours in a day) is ~7.6#that's where i got that number from. also from rent we know there's 168 hours in a week.#ALSO btw if u read this and ur response is ''men are also struggling rn tho'' like babe you missed the point of it tho#this doesn't even make fun of men it's legit just pointing out that bigotry against women isn't founded#in anything men actually CARE about . like they don't actually CARE about ''being clean'' when they make fun of armpit hair#or they would be WASHING THEIR HANDS.#men pretend to be rollin' in cash and Apex Predators and instead they are trained to be lazy and unwilling to act in emergencies#i have never and will never make fun of men for asking for more support on important topics like DV and mental health.#this is so clearly not about men; it's about how common just being plainly misogynistic has become.#like they don't try to hide it anymore.

This is for my disabled siblings who struggle to read or write. The disabled siblings who want to support authors but can't put thoughts into words to comment on fics or review books. Who want to read but can't focus on the words in front of them, who can't listen to audiobooks because of sensory processing. To those who love to read and write even if they aren't very good, who worry they'll never be good because of their disability. Those who need text-to-speech and oversized lettering. Those who learned to read late.
You're still valid. There's no shame in not reading. There's no shame in not leaving comments or reviews because you can't. It's okay; there's nothing to be embarrassed by. People can be pretentious about reading, but that's their problem, not yours.

The grandfather, who is also blind as a result of severe diabetes, feels isolated despite having his family around him. "If an air strike targets the house or the neighbourhood, I cannot move, not even using the wheelchair. I am completely paralysed, I cannot see and I can barely hear and move my arms. What has helped me is that we evacuated by car when the situation was less dangerous," Abujubein told MEE. . . . "What did the world that has long talked about human rights and the rights of people with disabilities do for us? My granddaughter has a subject about human rights in school. The first time they learned about people with disabilities, she was happy that she could reflect on me," Abu Jubein laughed. "She came to me repeating what she had learned about their rights and how they should be given a special treatment." "Now where is this special treatment? Did the world at least call for the evacuation of the displaced from Gaza until the end if the attacks?" "Even hospitals are targeted. When the Israeli occupation started bombing hospitals and then besieged al-Shifa Hospital, we thought that this would be the start of an international revolution against the occupation, because the protection of patients and children inside hospitals is the core value of human rights." "But, surprisingly, nothing happened."

Petition to add more disabled magical creatures in fantasy
Like picture a mermaid. When they have to be on land their tail turns to legs, but because their body is used to lower gravity their joints tire easily and are chronically in pain.
Also depending on how deep in the ocean they live, it’s likely they have circulation problems because their body is used to the water pressure holding everything where it needs to be and now their blood is always fucking pooling in their legs and they have to wear compression socks everywhere.
Wheelchair user mermaids. Partially/fully blind mermaids because who needs to see when there’s no light at the bottom of the ocean?
Mermaids with sensory issues who have to wear headphones all the time because sound is so much louder up here on land and they are constantly overstimulated. And also the sun is simply Too Bright™.
Mermaids who have POTS because in the water postural changes make no difference and their bodies don’t know how to stabilize with so much gravity.
I’m really fixated on the mermaids rn but PLEASE feel more than welcome to add more!!!! I wanna hear about disabled dragons

the other thing about being disabled in academia is everyone is like "yeah we can't do much about the buildings they're old :/" as if "old" being a synonym for "inaccessible" isn't just a constant reminder that the people who built the school did not imagine that someday someone like me might study there
