I'm all for stretching myself, aiming higher. That's how I got back to walking the Cumbrian fells after my chemotherapy for blood cancer gave me five collapsed vertebrae.

But as I've grown older I've grown wiser and I've learned to also enjoy the moment where I am, rather than letting those high aims spoil the here and now.

It's a mental discipline, to learn to appreciate what we've got where we are, while also working for better. But, in my experience, learning that mental discipline brings previously unbelievable rewards.

Learning to "smell the roses" isn't necessarily easy, but it's worth in.... Or as on this walk, learning to smell the Rannerdale bluebells in that brief period in mid-May when they bloom. That moment that most Lake District visitors sadly miss.
