about target pulling some pride merch in some southern stores after their employees were threatened... do you think they should have kept all the pride stuff up?
they should have kept everything up. they should have painted the entire store in rainbow. same goes for bud light, they should have doubled down and made all the cans rainbow. if you're gonna be with us, either be with us or gtfo.
you know how when you come out to your parents and they give you tepid acceptance, but the minute a friend or other bigoty family member comes over and suddenly you need to keep your queerness to yourself? it's kinda like that. like. either stand with us like an actual ally or quit pretending to support us.
target pulling merch, hiding merch, removing all of their signage... all that's gonna do is teach fascists that they can get their way if they yell enough. (this also doesn't get into the waste of materials and resources of pulling these items and then just chucking them into the garbage instead of giving them out to be used)
bud light placing marketing employees "on leave" also teaches the same lesson. if you scream enough, if you threaten to bomb places, they will cave.
any company that is going to act like they support queer people should have an inherent understanding that it comes with a risk. the fact that these companies want our money but refuse to stand with us against the fascists just shows that they are only on our side so long as it is profitable. it's taking the mask off of corporate pride and showing the actual truth the lies beneath.
actual allies don't run away the second things get difficult. being an actual ally comes with risks. anyone claiming to be an ally that runs away the second anything remotely sketchy happens is not an actual ally.
and that's doubly so for corporations. i feel bad for all of the queer folks within target, bud light and others that worked so hard to actually make shit happen to only get told "actually, no, fuck you" because of fascists.

Anyway if writing brain ever gets out of the gravy basket I'll do the modern AU meet-cute where Ed's the owner of a once-legendary but now forgotten leather bar in the Village, and between the youth- and partying-obsessed culture that he feels too old for and the relentless march of gentrification and the sanitization and rainbow-capitalism corporatization of the neighborhood, he's thinking about just packing it all in, and Stede is the newly-out middle-aged divorced dad who took the Metro North down from Stamford or wherever to experience his very first NYC Pride at the age of forty-seven and is having the time of his LIFE except for the fact that he's extremely fucking lost because the streets around here make no sense.

For the sake of my question, I'm hoping wherever you're from, it's not ireland because I'm looking for an experience other than Ireland. I'm from Ireland (the capital city specifically) and we have pride near the end of June every year. I was pretty excited to go, a Bunch of queer youth groups and things like that go every year. But...when I went to Watch the parade, it was....so bad? Not in quality, but there were an unbelievable amount of corporatations? And well hated ones too, AMAZON?? AT PRIDE? With a cute little rainbow logo, well that's nice... And there was SO. MANY. corporations. I for sure saw more people under banners that said shit like fucking Google more than I saw people I could reasonably assume were there for celebrating their queerness. It was just....fucking advertising. And this is why I'm asking you, I'm not really sure who to ask but really I just want answers from other queer people who've been to pride in their countries. Are the biggest pride parades where you're from like this??? Are yours full of companies too???? Or is Dublin just fucked??
I haven't really gone to pride since the first time I went some years ago because of exactly this. I'm in the US, the first pride I went to was San Francisco pride in maybe 2016? and I didn't even go for the parade; I just came to explore the festival afterwards. every single one of the booths was some corporation, and all of the food was like, super expensive because it was all controlled by one company running every food booth across the whole festival.
I've heard small town Pride celebrations tend to be a lot better for this, I just haven't had the opportunity to go to one. But you might consider looking into one of those; you'd also be supporting a Pride celebration & vendors who are less likely to be getting the kind of support that those at the big city Pride celebrations are getting.
I did also have a nice time connecting with the ace group that was there, and using Pride as an opportunity to connect with community is just like, generally very much in the spirit of what it's about! so maybe going in with some plans and intentions would be helpful as well.

superstore × abbott elementary really the superior left-leaning sitcom crossover (quirky rainbow copaganda whomst? i don't know her) cheyenne, mateo and ava standing in the same room would produce enough gossipy trash talk contempt to power the sun, bo and tariq would either be bitter rivals or a bro-match made in hell, amy would probably know the legendary charter schools guy from a conference or something and hate him on principle. and there are so many semi-realistic options for how the shows could exist in the same universe, like maybe janet moves to philly after cloud 9 closes and her nerdy son transfers in to abbott, or an abbott student becomes pen pals with parker sosa or carter simms
Lol 😂
I do think Ava, Cheyenne, and Mateo would get along so well, like they'd give each other the skinny about all their coworkers as an icebreaker. I also think Ava and Garrett would get along surprisingly well, but when she finds out he's dating Dina the look she'd give that man, hoo boy 😭😭
Bo and Tariq would be bitter rivals at first sight before becoming a total bro match made in heaven and then talk about making collab together, but they'd argue so much about the content of the song that they'd be bitter rivals again and then write distracks about each other before once again making up and being bros and finally writing that collab they talked about
Amy knowing legendary charter guy from a business convention definitely makes a lot of sense, no way he didn't give a speech about how corporatizing schools will make them all a bunch of bank that just ruined her entire day 😂
As for the reason for the crossover I'm always gonna be partial to bi!Jonah and partial to this post I made being a reality
Tumblr media
Like Jonah and Jacob being friends from college and being in the same GSA and having had a terrible one night stand is now everything to me 😭😭
Maybe they stayed in touch and Jacob invites Jonah out for some big school fundraiser event or something and Jonah working his way through the political ladder thinks that getting his rich corporate wife to donate to a struggling school system would be a good move as well as the fact that he just cares a lot about education and underprivileged schools like Abbott as well as Jacob being a good friend he also wants to support and he ends up making it a big family vacation event that the Cloud9 family tacks themselves onto by proxy, because there's no way Cheyenne isn't obsessed with Gritty and would try to tack herself onto the trip just to get a TikTok with the mascot and she'd drag Bo (who also is obsessed with Gritty) and Mateo along and Dina would probably have some kind of weird feud or fight club type thing going on with some people in Philly that would then drag Garrett along to make sure his girlfriend didn't get herself put on some kind of list or end up in jail and Glenn would just get overly excited when he hears about the trip and add him and Gerusha to the list of guests because they haven't had a vacation out of state before and this vacation that was just supposed to be Amy and Jonah's family has snowballed to include half the employees from Cloud9 😂
Anyways I've prolly talked ebough about a crossover that will never happen, hope you enjoyed it lol

Went to Five Below and they’re selling cringey woke stuff. They’ve got a binder that says “ask me about my pronouns” even that’s literally what you’re NOT supposed to do. They also have a prog flag magnet, which we already know is regressive and disrespectful. I’d like to feel grateful for living in an accepting place, but these corps are too accepting of harmful woke bs.
Bro the rainbow corporatism is everywhere. I would also like to know who the manufacturer for the binder is, if its the kind of binder I'm thinking of, because a flawed binder can cause real problems with your ribs that can even effect future top surgery prospects iirc.

Guys I know corporatization of Pride is Bad™, but listen, I need you to see something important that I found in my local shop’s bakery
Tumblr media
That is an asexual Pride flag.  I was looking at the rainbow Pride cookies that were on display and I happened to see this one.  There aren’t that many asexuals (and of those not all would recognize the asexual Pride colors), but someone at the bakery still took the time to decorate this cookie with these colors just in case someone wanted it.  So yes, I did buy this cookie and then I cried in the car over it.  It just felt good to be included 🥲🖤🤍💜
Anyway happy Pride everyone

the disneyland app sent out a notification today for pride month and released a bunch of park / rainbow themed wallpapers.
pride has been corporatized for a while now, but for the longest time, the american disney parks have continued to play coy, not doing anything more expressly supportive than putting "rainbow" merch on sale.
it was only... last year? i think? they finally referring to queer people specifically in their merch and ads, using real pride flags, calling it "pride" etc
and it sucks bc disney continues to be bad about real lgbt stuff even as they advertise to us
but like, as a cultural barometer, and as something i care a lot about, its kind of nice that theyre finally advertising to us by name

you gotta realize that contradiction with making a post about how rainbow capitalism if fine and reblogging posts about how nudity at pride is good. You want the "safety" you think corporations bring? Then you'll have to look presentable and marketable for them. The pushback against nudity at pride is literally the result of the corporatization of pride
Never said rainbow capitalism was fine. Said i preferred it to the previous normal. Never said i was gonna hang up my coat and stop my protesting cuz theres rainbows in my grocery store. Said it makes me feel safer because people are less likely to hate crime me there. (unless they’re on tumblr.com 🤔)
Listen to me.
This is not a black and white argument. Nuance exists. Celebrating our successes is allowed, even as we continue the fight. The corporations are sociopathic. No one is arguing that. But now we have another seat at the table, another avenue to fight with, because public opinion is shifting due to our activism. This is part of the fight.

after being in NYC for the first 3 days of june I get why ppl in large metro areas are fed up with the corporatization of pride and I remember that being me when I was in the greater Boston area but to that I say try going somewhere that’s not a major coastal city. my town’s pride events are all thrown together by a handful of very dedicated drag queens and burlesque dancers and anyone who feels like volunteering at them and personally I’m so excited. we’re having a parade for I think the first time ever, it’s gonna march for like 3 blocks, I can’t wait to see what the hell that’s like. not a tacky rainbow billboard in sight

Show Them Pride is More Than A Party
I’m writing this under the assumption you’ve researched the origins of Pride, and have also seen a current day Pride. If you haven’t, you have homework before reading this. 2023 brings many far-right political attacks targeting Pride Parades (and a litany of other anti-LGBTQ issues). Combine that with the Rainbow Capitalism and corporatization of Pride that the community is wary of. This…

My Favorite Albums of 2020
7. The Strokes, The New Abnormal
Tumblr media
Favorite Tracks: Brooklyn Bridge to Chorus | Selfless | Ode to the Mets
In The New Abnormal, The Strokes have put out a body of work that sounds like a return to form. The Strokes helped define the early 2000s, providing a different path from the heavy tones of popular alternative rock coming out of the grunge era. In contrast, The Strokes were light, fun, and catchy while still putting out guitar-centric tunes with memorable riffs. Their sound in large part signaled the death knell of traditional rock, instead evolving and fusing rock into a wave so diffuse that it created an entirely new genre known as “indie” music. As opposed to what I can only describe in Time Crisis terms as “herm yarl” (think Creed, Nickelback, etc.) which evolved straight out of popular 90’s rock bands like Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots, indie music was more like a web of musical inspiration as opposed to a throughline, incorporating multiple genres and eras of music for added flavor. The Strokes are also undeniably a New York band, representing both the fragments of the cool Lower East Side glam punk and the imminent gentrification of the storied immigrant neighborhood. In these ways, The Strokes’ cultural impact serves as both a beginning and an end, a turning point in which the world would change dramatically and rapidly.
As with virtually every album I’ve included in this list, The New Abnormal was released in the midst of a global pandemic, this one with a coincidentally aptly-named title. As pointed out by other blogs, the last time the Strokes released an album during a major crisis was their debut Is This It shortly after the 9/11 attacks.  Both albums were released at the turn of the decade but have vastly different contexts: while Is This It represented a new sound and the world was processing rapid technological developments and globalization at the turn of the millennium, The New Abnormal represents a nostalgic familiarity providing comfort for the uncertainty of the future. As an early 20-something, I became a fan of the Strokes at an odd time; Angles and Comedown Machine were major releases for me as a teenager but it’s undeniable that the 2010s were not a strong point in Strokes lore. However, this did position me to be living in New York City as an early 20-something in 2020, which set the context for this album in my own life.
The New Abnormal is still distinctly New York with its incredible Jean-Michel Basquiat cover art and references to the Brooklyn Bridge and the Mets, but the NYC of The New Abnormal is indeed a much different city than the NYC of their first few records. From speaking with lifelong New Yorker friends I’ve made during my time in the city, the moments of the 9/11 attacks are still very much seared into the memories of New Yorkers and the next two decades signaled a push towards an increased police presence, predatory corporatization, and astronomical costs of living. The New York I live in now is still a bastion of progressivism, diversity, and opportunity, but only for those either privileged enough to afford it or resourceful enough to navigate it. Gentrification is obvious and rampant and serves as a constant topic of conversation for both displaced local or lower-income communities and the socially-conscious well-off transplants alike. The grittiness of neighborhoods like the Lower East Side has been replaced by glamorous luxury high rises and overpriced brunch spots; coolness has shifted from divey DIY arts culture to hype-y curated Instagram culture. This change of the city is mirrored in the growth of the Strokes’ lyrics that comes with age; my favorite track, “Brooklyn Bridge to Chorus,” features pensive reflections on the shifting of adult friendship over Rainbow Road-esque 80’s synths.
And first he would tell me I’m his friend Actually, no thanks, I’m okay Then he would send weird looks my way I want new friends, but they don’t want me They’re making plans while I watch TV Thought it was them, but maybe it’s me I want new friends, but they don’t want me And the eighties song, yeah, how did it go? When they said, “This is the beginning of the best years” Even though, false, break - The Strokes, “Brooklyn Bridge to Chorus”
These lyrics hit particularly hard when interpreted in the context of my own life with the pressures and insecurities of making friends in a new city and the difficulty of having one of the “best years of your life” robbed due to COVID. The theme of age and losing relationships to time is brought up multiple times throughout the album, from songs like “The Adults Are Talking,” “Not the Same Anymore” and “At The Door” to lines like “All my friends left / And they don’t miss me” in “Why are Sundays so Depressing.” In some ways, the worldview expressed throughout The New Abnormal is exacerbated and accelerated due to COVID, with many of the lyrics and themes about adulthood becoming more and more relatable as the streets empty and seeing friends turns into a rarity. The surreal doom of 2020 can be summarized in the last verse of the album on the slow, unfolding and almost Disney World-esque whimsical closer track, “Ode to the Mets”:
Gone now are the old times Forgotten, time to hold on the railing The Rubik’s Cube isn’t solving for us Old friends, long forgotten The old ways at the bottom Of the ocean now has swallowed The only thing that’s left Is us, so pardon The silence that you’re hearing Is turning into A deafening, painful, shameful roar - The Strokes, "Ode to the Mets"
An important thing to note is that this isn’t a quarantine album—the title and lyrics were written pre-pandemic. While the content seems extra prescient in these times, I’m reminded that change is inevitable and what was once intimately familiar can become unrecognizable over time. In an interview, band members noted that producer Rick Rubin had the group simply go in a room and jam together without expectation, something they hadn’t done in 20 years, resulting in an organic, creative camaraderie. Even though things have changed so rapidly, I can’t help but hope that it leads to greater appreciation for old friendships and opportunity for a revitalized cultural outgrowth. Who knows? Maybe in 20 years the Strokes will drop a song called “Orchard Street is Cool Again.”

Oh that’s fucked.
Lemony vomit. That’s what happened but that’s not the only thing that’s fucked up and I’m asking Nick who is paying you to ask me out there is something very very strange about all of it. I can’t believe what you said to me last night oh my God, even Christie is like oh my God something tells me she’s a step ahead somehow somewhere in the over the rainbow maybe you’re in it with me and that’s another version of you. I think it’s just a really great dress. It’s just you don’t see your gifts we all see them instead well who am I a bitch though I don’t see half of my guess and then I’m like hey wait I’m smart right like am I smart I’m smart I’m totally smart and they’re like yeah yeah whatever like fuck you you’re smart but they don’t ever say it that you wanna be any smart no you don’t you want to be yourself I get it though as far as all American girls go pretty OKay
Remember when I got sick and I needed you to get me to the bathroom but we were in the emergency room Judy
I would be in touch. Oh thank you
That’s not what I said up. There were a few different energies far north I think I think I’m not entirely sure I just it feels northern right or is that just influence from the gosh flood Oh OK yeah lotta blood happens. I hear that’s what they tell me course I’m talking about my first a little bit on my birth.
Yes they have me protected in that way so that American children can’t take everything from me greedily course you never could
And that’s true I never quit
India, we found a harsh button for the kids this time and then and then and then. 00 dear God,
Tori, Amos and I we seem to have a harsh wavelength she acts like a neglected child. If you look at her in the Looking Glass excuse you mom I’m going to have a better body than you are do not tell me that they are donating Mary God, do you know that feeling oh geez speak of which your mother right she’s she’s familiar she’s very familiar I could never take anything from Tori Amos his mother and I never would
The looking glass is not a corporatized thing kids that’s not how that works. Some of the women ask me how does that work? Oh Jesus guys I mean look at your influence in all of this, and look at what I told you in the past and I did not say that I was Jesus I did not say that everything I said was absolutely accurate. In fact, I didn’t want you guys really that much into my work to the point where you would be like well, you meant that literally right oh dear God.

not to sound problematique but i'm so tired of pride month already and it hasn't even started yet....i'll admit ive only been to pride parades 3 times, so it's not like i'm coming from a wealth of experience, but while there was a certain comfort in being surrounded by a bunch of out and proud lgbt people it didn't feel like it was for me? how does watching a series of company floats with rainbow-clad dancers help me as a lesbian? how does pride merch from fast-fashion companies that use slave labor do anything to liberate me as someone oppressed by capitalist-fueled misogyny and homophobia?
idk it all just feels very shallow and corporatized to me i'm kind of over it lol
